Dear Reader It’s mid-June as I write this and it seems the summer has finally arrived! I took a stroll along the Quay yesterday to see so many people enjoying Cheryl our beautiful surroundings. There were children playing in the Splash Park, kicking a football or doing cart wheels and handstands (I even had a go myself and came to the conclusion I’m not as agile as I once was!); families feeding the ducks and eating picnics, cyclists taking a rest whilst watching the boats launching at the slipway, water enthusiasts on the river by way of boats and paddleboards. It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying the sunshine. Fingers crossed for lots more of it this summer! Until next month,

Cheryl

- The Life of Blessed Margaret Pole

Wolf Hall, the recent BBC TV drama based on the political machinations of King Henry VIII and his chief minister, Thomas Cromwell, received much popular acclaim. One woman who became tragically entangled with these intrigues had a close link with Christchurch... Margaret was born of the royal House of Plantagenet in 1473, but her mother, Isabel Neville, died when she was still an infant. Barely a year later her father, George, Duke of Clarence, was accused of treason by his own brother, King Edward IV, and privately ‘executed’ in the Tower of London, reputedly by being held head-down in a barrel of Malmsey wine. A week after her twelfth birthday Margaret’s uncle, King Richard III, was killed at the Battle of Bosworth by Henry Tudor, who seized the crown. Margaret and her younger brother, Edward, thereby became the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. To control this potential threat to Tudor rule King Henry VII had Margaret married to his cousin, Sir Richard Pole. Her brother Edward, however, suffered a far less happy fate and was held captive in the Tower of London for 14 years before finally being executed. Margaret was widowed in 1504, leaving her with five children and very little inheritance. However, when King Henry VIII came to the throne five years later he welcomed her to court as a lady-in-waiting to his first Queen, Katherine of Aragon. Margaret also became a godmother and then governess to their first surviving child, Princess Mary. The King later installed Margaret as the Countess of Salisbury (a title formerly held by her mother). She thereby acquired the Manor of Christchurch. Here she had a fine chantry built in the North Quire Aisle of the Priory Church where the canons would chant or sing the Mass for the souls of her family. Now called the Salisbury Chantry, it is believed that it was designed by a leading Florentine sculptor. It is not clear why Margaret chose Christchurch for her chantry and seemingly also as the intended place of her burial - there is no evidence that she ever visited the town. However, the deeds of a house in Castle Street show that in 1527 she owned the western half of the property, so did she perhaps occasionally lodge there? The house is now the New Forest Tea Rooms, though the part of the building she owned was pulled down in 1884 and rebuilt as a shop, now Ronny’s Cafe. Being a devout Catholic, Margaret was dismayed when King Henry divorced Queen Katherine in 1533 and 6 • Christchurch Eye • July 2015

declared Princess Mary to be illegitimate. She made her feelings known to him, as did her son, Reginald, a leading theologian (and Dean of Wimborne Minster), who strongly condemned the King’s rejection of the Church of Rome. Reginald was safely in Italy, but his mother and family in England were investigated by Thomas Cromwell (as shown in Wolf Hall). Cromwell initially informed the King that other than being related to Reginald they had ‘little offended’, but he later found evidence enough to have Margaret and her other two sons, Henry and Geoffrey, imprisoned. Under torture Geoffrey gave more evidence and was released, but his brother Henry was executed. After Cromwell’s agents came to assess the value of Christchurch Priory at its dissolution in 1539 they reported that they had defaced Margaret’s chantry by removing all the identifying badges and arms. The damage done to the three carved bosses in the fan vaulted ceiling can still be clearly seen. On 27th May 1541, after over two years of captivity in the Tower of London and aged 67, Margaret was executed. It is said that she refused to place her neck on the block, declaring that she would not die the death of a traitor. Indeed, she seems to have made every effort to ensure that her execution would be seen as a brutal act of murder. She was essentially hacked to death, though this was later blamed on a ‘blundering youth’ of an axeman. With her death, any lingering threat to Tudor rule from the old Plantagenet dynasty was finally removed. Whatever had been Margaret’s hope to be interred in Christchurch Priory, it was her fate to be buried in the Tower’s chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. In 1886 Margaret was beatified as a Catholic martyr by Pope Leo XIII and has ever since been known as the Blessed Margaret Pole.

The weather was kind and the event was a great success on a whole series of levels.

Peter

First, it entices tens of thousands to come to Christchurch in the middle of May, and whilst it might not boost trade for all, it certainly did for those who threw themselves into the spirit of the event and set up their own pitches. In addition, it is a great showcase for the town and for tourism. Secondly, it brings in thousands of pounds for the charity vendors. Christchurch Round Table alone sold more lager and beer than ever and raised over £5,000 for charity. Its extension into the Quomps this year helped take some of the crowds out of the High Street (although it was still packed) and gave space for local groups and bands to entertain us. It is a great community event and its extension into Highcliffe on the following weekend proved a new development that I anticipate will continue in future years. In addition to all that, over the 16 years it has been running, it has put Christchurch on the map as a great place for foodies. It is no coincidence that the town now has a high number of first class restaurants. This year the Chewton Glen won the best Professional Chef and the Captains Club the Best Bartender – with a special award for the Kings who have been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand status. All this, and more, is organised by just a small band of local volunteers under a charity umbrella, which makes it even more exceptional. Congratulations to them – and, if you are a local business, do you not think you should be sponsoring them for next year?

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 6 - Ye Olde George Inn

It’s time to pop into Christchurch’s oldest surviving pub (purely for research purposes you understand); it’s ‘Ye Olde George Inn’ in Castle Street and it’s plaque no 8 on our trail.

Formerly known as the ‘George & Dragon’, the arch tells us this was a stop for the ‘Emerald’, a green coach, plying between Lymington and Poole (surely Lymington and not Leamington as proclaimed by calligraphic writing above the arch’s interior, which also states the inn is 600 years old). Well, the building may be, but the inn probably not. Deeds show this was a dwelling house in the 15th century. The first reference to it being a pub appears to be 1652, although it may already have been an inn when referred to as ‘St George’ in 1630. Some of the building’s footings appear to have come from the castle, ransacked at the time of the English Civil War; this ironstone would originally have come from Hengistbury Head in Norman times. The inn was conveniently located for the town’s original market square, which stood right here, at the junction of the High Street and Castle Street. In fact, there were three pubs within a spittoon’s distance of the square. That would explain why coaches stopped here, notorious smuggler John Streeter, of Stanpit, craftily using them for disseminating his ill-gotten gains. The George was reputedly a ‘hive’ of smugglers (or whatever the collective noun was). Tunnels reputedly ran from here to the quay and castle. Handily near the court house, the pub included a cell for convicts

sentenced to deportation. The barred window is bricked up, but a representation shows a hapless individual awaiting the ‘Emerald’ to take him to Poole. Next stop Australia. There was plenty of Stephen accommodation hereabouts for the lawless, as the old wooden town hall in the centre of the square had its own prison at one end. A far more salubrious visitor was Princess Victoria, future Queen, whose carriage horses reposed here while the great lady amused herself at the Priory. At the back of the George’s courtyard, is the ‘Sophie Dawes’, a function-room commemorating a local ragsto-riches tale, the impoverished lass who married into the French aristocracy, was accused of murdering her lover, acquitted, then sought the quiet life, retiring to Mudeford at grand Bure Homage. I wish I could pack as much fun into one life. Meanwhile, the ‘Grey Lady’ is more of the spectral and may be responsible for table accoutrements moving around from time to time. Oo-er. The passageway alongside the George, a convenient cutthrough behind the High Street, once led to Town Mill, one of the town’s Saxon mills, which was on the Mill Stream, close to today’s ducking stool. On the Water

I’m willing to bet that every single one of us has taken part in the same water related activity (some may call it a sport!) at some stage of our life.

Chris

A bold statement I hear you say?! I will save you the pain of guessing – Duck Feeding! Kids, slightly older kids we call adults, and the more experienced duck feeding kids we call grandparents! Either way I’m willing to bet we’ve all had a cheeky go at duck feeding sometime! This time of year has seen the arrival of many ducklings and cygnets on the water in Christchurch and I for one have not passed on the opportunity to engage in such a pleasurable activity, and whilst kayaking or paddle boarding my clients have enjoyed this addition to courses on the water. One child refused to proceed with the course until she had fed one particular ‘smaller than the rest’ cygnet. The child in question was 37 years old……! So get out there and feed some ducks for that feel good factor this month!

I had the pleasure of catching one of the old ferries from Tuckton Tea Gardens the other day, all the way down to the jetty at the spit on Hengistbury Head. It was a lovely reminder of how wonderful a journey on the water is in our area. It only costs a few pounds and maybe 15 minutes of your time, then enjoy a drink in the Beach House café or a wonder along the sea front in the sun and up to Hengistbury Head for one of the best views in our county. The Noddy train offers a great ride back for those looking to complement their personal journey back to childhood (yes I caught the train). As always, however you do it go and make use of this wonderful stretch of water in the area in which we live. Enjoy…! Chris

Christchurch Rotary Some weeks ago our Club played hosts to a charity called ‘Dream Holidays’.

Dream Holidays is a registered charity that Paul grants holidays and wishes for children with cystic fibrosis, based in Ventnor, Isle of Wight. Its Founder, Elaine Tozer is also a fellow Rotarian! It is very easy to think that by sending off a cheque to help with treatment is the only answer, but for those who have experienced close ones with severe illness it is only the start of a long road trying to live a ‘normal’ life.

Dream Holidays came and talked to us about children living with cystic fibrosis who just wanted to be kids having fun, doing all of the things healthy children enjoy, and probably take for granted each day. I am delighted to tell our readers that Christchurch Rotary Club gave a small donation of £200, which will be used, for a ‘referred’ family in Christchurch. Local cystic fibrosis specialist nurses, a doctor or social workers can refer a child by downloading a brief form from their website: www.cfdreamholidays.com Their site is full of stories showing what a huge difference can be made when kids (and their family) have a respite holiday. There are some lovely stories of children enjoying: laser games, football matches, and days at the beach. It’s a very welcoming and heart-warming charity.

A Reputation built over 85 years

So those pound coins dropped into the Rotary tin really do add up to make a big difference to someone’s life. But as I keep saying, don’t just take my word for it, take a look at the fantastic work this charity does by looking on their site, or better still, come along and see what were doing. The door is always open.

Adopt a Pet LOOKING FOR A FOREVER HOME

Hi, I’m Pasha a 6 year old Sharpie who loves sleeping, cuddles and a nice cup of tea. I can however be very stubborn and as I’m very strong would need to be with a family with plenty of space and children of secondary school age or above. I am generally a good boy but am a bit shy of people at first, especially men but once I get to know you, you will have a very loving boy. Unfortunately I am not that way with other animals so I would need to be the only pet in the house hold, I do hope that someone can give me the forever home I grave for as I really miss having a family of my own. I know the people here at Waggy Tails Rescue look after me very well and keep me entertained with walks etc but please give me a home.

A CASE STUDY OF A NEWBIE BUY-TO-LET LANDLORD! In early 2009 I was approached by a chap looking to invest in a buy-to-let property; at the time he was looking to invest cÂŁ230k.

Jeremy

We sat down together and shortlisted five properties from local agents’ details, he then went away to make appointments to view these properties. I then accompanied him on all five viewings to give my input as to what each property would return as far as rental income.

During that day we settled on one particular house an extended three bedroom-semi off of Comet Way in Mudeford priced at ÂŁ230k. Over the next weeks, the negotiations culminated in an agreement to buy the house at ÂŁ220k and about five weeks later he had the keys. We started marketing immediately as the new owner set about decorating the house from top to bottom in neutral colours. Within a week a tenant was secured and that tenant moved in just over 3 weeks after the buyer had completed the purchase. Six years later and the property has had three sets of tenants plus, we are able to show some actual figures based on purchase price, rental income (gross) and current estimated value. There was no mortgage required to buy, the money came from an inheritance. May 2009, purchased for: ÂŁ220,000

Rent received June 2009 - May 2015: ÂŁ64,335 Current estimated value: ÂŁ265,000

Obviously there have been costs: cÂŁ10,000

So what do these figures show? To me they show that the owner has returned approximately ÂŁ55,000 (rent less costs) on his original investment – about 25% and he now has an asset worth maybe ÂŁ45,000 more than he paid for it, an overall ‘profit’ of cÂŁ100,000! For free Buy-to-Let advice, call me and we can chat things through.

Change a life for £1 a week

Joining the Julia’s House lottery for £1 a week is a simple way of giving regularly to the only children’s hospice in Dorset offering regular respite and support to children with life-limiting illnesses and their families…and there is a £1,000 jackpot to win every week!

Susie Andrews’ 11-year-old daughter, Katherine, visits the Julia’s House hospice once a month and Susie’s family has been playing the lottery since soon after its launch. “We thought it was a great way to support Julia’s House. We are so lucky to have such a super service available to us locally,” says Susie.

“Sessions at the hospice are a wonderful opportunity for Katherine to spend some time away from her family and to socialise with children that have similar limitations. She enjoys the one on one attention and has made some good friends.” “From our point of view, it is wonderful for us to leave Katherine in a safe and loving environment. It gives us the time to take Katherine’s brother Michael, 7, out to do something that he really likes, like visit The Tank Museum. He really enjoys having his mum and dad to himself; it’s just so important to him. I don’t think you realise how vital it is for siblings to have time like that, until you are in this situation. Julia’s House receives less than 6 per cent of its funds from the government and relies on the generosity of its supporters for the rest. It will cost £4.6m to run Julia’s House this year.

To sign up to the Julia’s House lottery, visit juliashouse.org or call 01202 798618.

Christchurch Citizens Association It cannot be July already! Where does the time go?

We are very pleased that the re-surfacing of the road called Whitehall took place at the end of May. This was urgently needed, if only we could persuade the traffic to SLOW DOWN. This road does not have pavements and with the Priory infant and junior school so close, it means children walking to and from school are in danger from speeding vehicles.

A traffic survey has been taken in the vicinity of Marsh Lane so it looks as if it is very likely to be the site of the new school. If this goes ahead local residents fear that double yellow lines, which are usually placed near school facilities, would cause great inconvenience. We are keeping watch on this subject and as soon as a planning application goes into the council we hope you will come and express your views. There is still no news as to where the Police are going to be situated locally, it is very strongly felt that this should have been addressed before the closure of Christchurch Police Station. The CCA is undertaking to re-establish with our local authority the maintenance of the muchenjoyed flowerbeds, roundabouts and grass verges etc., within the borough. In the past the town has been noted for its floral displays and we are sad to see that is falling below standards that we have come to expect.

The Red House Museum is proving very popular at the moment with the Dinosaur Exhibition. Children, as always, find dinosaurs exciting especially with a few sound effects. The gardens, which are beautiful, are also worth a visit.

Christchurch Round Table

Did you know there has been a Round Table in Christchurch for nearly 60 years?! Before you think it, sadly, we don’t sit around an ‘Arthurian’ round table in suits of armour and brandishing swords, as much as we would love to! Christchurch Round table is a charity organisation for men, between the ages of 18 and 41 and concerns itself with just a few key points. We raise money locally and spend it locally on all sorts of charitable causes to help and benefit the community on local events; the Food Festival and the Christmas Festival to name just a few. Arguably most importantly, to have a load of fun whilst doing it! If you can raise money for fantastic people and causes whilst enjoying yourself then that’s got to be a good way of spending time. Many of you will know us from the beer stall at the food festival which we run with our German friends from the twin town of Aalen, where throughout the festival we actively encourage you to (responsibly) drink for charity as all the proceeds go direct to local causes. Many of you see us at Christmas where our members dress as Santa or Elves and tow a Christmas Carol float around our community raising money as we go. You can see us marshalling events such as carnival, firework night and Stompin on the Quomps, and generally having a great time. We meet every two weeks on a Tuesday night at Splinters restaurant where we discuss our events, plan and make decisions on charitable donations whilst enjoying the friendship and fellowship of the table. We welcome anyone interested in coming to see what we do, getting involved and most importantly those wanting to make a difference to the wonderful place we live in. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? WAT E R W I T H O U T T H E G U I LT

Who remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks. But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon. But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant.

Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently.

You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2500 litres!

A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth!

A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size.

With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free.

However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system. Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives.

38 • Christchurch Eye • July 2015

Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further.

Teen Column Happy July I am very exited about this month as I am going on a music tour to ITALY!!! Laura Music tour is one of my favourite things to go on as not only do I get to play music and sing in another country, I get to explore and experience the culture with friends. I remember last year on the last night singing our final song, it was honestly one of the best moments of my life and so emotional. I found myself shedding a small tear as we left the following day. My life has got a bit crammed though as I have had to juggle music rehearsals and revision. I have hardly had anytime for a social life. The great thing is the holidays are just around the corner. Six weeks to do what I wish and not worry about school and exams. Every year I hope that the whole summer will be hot and sunny but then I remember I live in England and that is very rare. One thing I will be doing over the summer is helping out with the Water Lily Project (a project that helps vulnerable women and children in the local community) as they have brought a house that needs decorating and need an army of volunteers to do so. The project is being funded using the money Baileys café on Barrack Road makes. Not only is it a café it also has a computer suite (£1 per hour) and art groups. If you wish to volunteer and to find out more, email the people in charge at wcpchristchurch@ gmail.com, you can also find their page on Facebook. Keep working hard it’s nearly summer!

RNLI Funday Raft Race - Sunday 9th August 2015 The RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat Station Raft Race is a major part of this great Funday held in Mudeford, Christchurch each year. Many people come along just to see the different types of rafts and their attempts to win, whether they be the fastest, best dressed or just the most original and fun raft. £26,695 was raised in 2014 for the RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat Station! RNLI Mudeford Lifeboat Funday is a great day out for all the family, it’s free to come along and just by spending a pound or two while you’re there, you’ll be helping to support our local lifeboat station! The Fun Day is both significant and unique, in that ALL the money raised at this event goes directly to maintaining this lifeboat service at Mudeford. With one of the major events of the day being the Raft Race, many people come along to see the different types of rafts and their attempts to win, whether they be the fastest, best dressed or just the most original and fun raft. As well as prizes for the fastest rafts there is also a prize for the Best Dressed Raft, so if you make that extra effort with your raft and crew costumes you’ll be in with a good chance to win a prize There will be shields for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place • Best Dressed Raft • Most Sponsorship Raised and Wooden Spoon! Getting SPONSORSHIP (minimum £100) for your raft makes a big difference to the total on the day. Last year the race itself raised thousands in sponsorship money. Some rafts are sponsored by businesses, which gives them a great opportunity to display their company name for all to see. It is estimated that over 10,000 people attend every year. The local press and television also cover the day. Entry forms are also available from; Denisons Estate Agents12 Castle Street, Christchurch BH23 1DT Tel: 01202 484748. Mum’s the Word For many of us, July marks the beginning of the school summer holidays; time to spend with our little (or big!) ones, and the welcome break of the school runs, every, single, day.

Natasha

For me and so many I know, this is the last holiday before one of our children begin their time at one of our great local schools. I don’t know about everyone else but I’m both excited and sad. It’s just around the corner, so I plan to have an awesome six weeks making the most of our time with no routine (I admit I’m sure by the end of the holidays I maybe fairly happy it’s all over...). So with that in mind, I must mention a great trip out that a few people have asked me to put in here as they never knew it existed - our local airport has a great little cafe open from 8.30am daily, that sits just off of the runway with an outdoor viewing area for the children to watch up close as the planes take off and land. It’s called Bournemouth Flying Club and is open all year round to the public; my girls have been occupied here for hours! You will often see pilots and aircraft crew having their breaks in here and I’ve always found them helpful when my children are asking the names of planes and I have absolutely no idea what they are called. This July sees the return of the Christchurch Cheese and Chilli festival. First off, I will say there is a free wine Masterclass session (I was sold as I presume this means tasting session); a music bus; bubble football and circus skills for the children. It is on the 11th/12th July at Bournemouth Sports Ground, which is also right next to the airport.

Whatever your plans this summer, enjoy the sun, the lazy days, the lack of routine and your little ones run up to their first step into becoming ‘a big boy/girl’ as its called in our house. I’m sure come September I’ll be writing a more frazzled piece on how to recoup after six weeks with four children, all day, everyday. But until then, my positivity remains, hopefully yours too!

TUCKTONIA: THE INSIDE STORY (CONTINUED) Written by Alex McKinstry

This month we resume our chat with Paul Taylor, ex-head gardener at Tucktonia, who began work there in 1976 – a year after the site’s purchase by Grand Metropolitan Hotels Ltd. Most days began with him emptying the bins at 6 a.m., after which he would repair to Elford’s Engineering to purchase thirty cans of petrol, used to fuel the go-karts, go-boats and other attractions. Mid-morning, a retired signwriter named Mr Dibley tended to drop in with a consignment of parts for the model village, each new figure having the words ‘DIBLEY DID IT’ inscribed on the reverse. Two of these miniature figures were saved by Paul shortly before the site closed in 1986, and are pictured below – almost the last fragments of Tucktonia to survive anywhere.

After a morning’s work, Paul and his colleagues would adjourn to The Riverside Inn at Tuckton for liquid refreshment: ‘We avoided The Golfers’ Arms,’ says Paul, ‘otherwise we’d just be called back to work at a moment’s notice.’ There was little point doing much gardening in the afternoon, firstly because ‘the grockles’ would be milling about, and secondly because, after drinking at The Riverside, few of Paul’s colleagues would be fit to stand up, let alone operate a lawnmower. Paul himself tended to clock off at 3 or 4 p.m. but would be back at night to clean the amusement arcade or patrol the site for Sentinel Security, finding time to chat with Bournemouth Police, who called in for a cup of tea at 2 a.m., or Christchurch Police, who called at 3 a.m. The police were particularly useful in teaching 48 • Christchurch Eye • July 2015

Tucktonia staff how to break into cars, as visitors were always locking themselves out of their vehicles during the summer months. By effectively doing three jobs, Paul regularly notched up a seventy-hour week at the site; only Kim Skinner, the maintenance manager, achieved a similar tally (and could often be found crashed out in Tucktonia’s hidden control room). The longest shift Paul remembers working was ‘thirty-seven hours, flat out’ on 28-29 December 1979, when the River Stour burst its banks, flooding the cellars of The Golfers’ Arms and breaching the site’s control room. Paul spent the shift manning three electric pumps, desperately trying to prevent further damage; luckily, the model village was spared, as most of the floodwater careered down Fairway Drive and into Stour Road. This was the flood that famously devastated the Iford Bridge Caravan Park, sending several caravans floating down the river. One ended up crashing onto the Tuckton golf course; Paul and his colleagues managed to get £80 for it in salvage money, equivalent to two weeks’ wages. The flood was one of many problems Grand Met encountered during its eight-year ownership of the site, and, being short of space, we will look at these in greater detail in next month’s issue. One final anecdote from these years bears repeating, however. One afternoon, a drugs squad officer, holidaying in Christchurch, took Paul aside and enquired as to the provenance of a long-leafed plant in the Tucktonia rockery. It turned out to be a herbaceous plant of the species Cannabis sativa, which Paul thinks had flourished as a seedling in the slurry he routinely purchased from the Christchurch sewage works. ‘I did say to the officer,’ recalls Paul, ‘do you seriously think, if I was to grow cannabis, I’d do it in the middle of a crowded fun park?’ The officer agreed it was unlikely, and the plant was cut down without further incident. Thus ended Tucktonia’s only known run-in with the drugs squad. You read it here first.
