Dear Reader
I do love this time of year and it’s finally starting to feel like Spring has sprung. The sunshine is making more of a welcome appearance and the days are slowly but surely getting longer, Cheryl making for longer evenings. This month I was fortunate to have spotted some otters here, on the river Stour! I managed to film them and popped them onto our Facebook page (www.facebook. com/localeyemags) and we had over 73,000 views! Paul Turton, a local man who has been studying them along the Stour for the Dorset Mammal Group, contacted us as he wanted to know a little more information about what we had seen. I was so keen to learn more about these rarely seen creatures that I asked Paul if he would be kind enough to write an article about them for the Christchurch Eye which you can find on page 17. April 21st will mark our Queen’s 90th birthday. Queen Elizabeth II will become the first reigning British monarch to reach the age of 90. There will be celebrations taking place all over the UK and in many other parts of the world to commemorate this landmark birthday. We hope that she will have a wonderful time. Until next month,

Local History by Len Wigg Christchurch Businesswomen 1784-1823 Among the earliest records we have of businesswomen in this period are entries in Trades Directories.
This delicate work needed small fingers and good light, so the workshops required large windows.
The `Hampshire Directory’ by J Sadler of Winchester in 1784 mentions the Misses Noyce and the Misses Charlotte and Sarah Reeks, both drapers and the former milliners as well. About ten years later in `The Universal British Directory of Trade, Commerce and Manufacture’, the Noyces were named Susan and Martha, and they were joined by Ann Cranstone, another milliner, the widow of John who had died in 1788.
Examples of chains, together with the many different tools necessary for stamping out the links from thin steel sheet, and assembling the components, may be seen in the display in the Red House Museum. The Cox workshop was in the High Street (1789-1873), next to the Ship Inn, but it has been demolished. The workshop built by another firm, William Hart & Co, has been preserved with its large windows. It is on Bargates and is shown below.
Pigot & Co’s 1823 `Directory of Hampshire’, lists a wider range of occupations. Mrs and Misses Hart had a Boarding Academy, also Mrs Jane Neave, who was a daughter of Robert and Ann Cox (below). Mary Pike was a china, glass & earthenware dealer and also a cooper. Her husband Meshach had died in 1815; he had been a winecooper in the 1790s. Meriam (sic) Humby, wife of Thomas, who was an attorney and conveyancer, was landlord at the King’s Arms Inn and Hotel. Ann Lemmon, the widow of James, was landlord of Cross Keys Tavern and Public House. Margaret Barnes and Sarah Newman were shopkeepers.
Sue Newman has written a widely researched book `The Christchurch Fusee Chain Gang’ (2010) which explains the importance of this manufacturing to the local economy for more than 100 years. It gave employment, especially to children from the town workhouse – now the Red House Museum - and other neighbouring workhouses too. The working hours were up to ten a day in the lighter summer months. This was some years before the Factory Acts of 1833, and 1844, which at last ordered child workers aged 9 -13 to spend two hours a day, six days a week at school. Life was certainly rather different in Christchurch about 200 years ago.
Ann Cox was a watch and clock fusee chain maker, widow of Robert (1755-1815), who had been a watchmaker, and manufacturer of watch chains in the 1790s. These chains were part of the watch mechanism and looked like bicycle chains, but much smaller, comprising of as many as 20 links to one centimetre. It’s official. According to Department of Transport data, the traffic in Christchurch is the worst it has ever been.
Our main artery, the A35, has lowest average speed in the region: 14.2 mph during the rush hour – which is when I use it on my way to work. And that is before any road works. May I use this column to apologise to the residents of the quiet back-roads of Highcliffe whose peace and quiet I, and many others, shatter as we try to circumnavigate the closure of Walkford Road due to gas works. None of us need telling that traffic congestion is a real problem in the town. And it will only get worse when one considers all the potential developments being put forward – 850 houses at Stoney Cross, a large development at the police station site and now even a new school on green belt land at the back of Fairmile.
It is interesting news to hear that, as a result, the Council have re-opened the investigation of that long-debated issue of a Christchurch relief road. Their Resources Committee have agreed to fund a review of the options available. Consultants have been appointed to appraise the economic case and the viability of a scheme.
When the possibility was last examined, many years ago now, there were three possible routes. All were considered highly controversial due to the impact on the routes they would have to take. The result of this initial review is due shortly, but the potential cost and the environmental implications of road building over green belt land may well mean that such a bold enterprise will not see the light of day. But, to use a welltrodden phrase, ‘something has to be done’.

We are very lucky here in Christchurch to be situated within two rivers, the Avon and the Stour, as they both harbour a fantastic variety of wildlife. One, being the Otter, which almost disappeared from our waters in the 1950’s to becoming a resident in every county by 2011. Therefore spotting an Otter these days may not be as rare as you think. Currently there is a family comprising of one female and three cubs living alongside us in Christchurch and can be seen anywhere from Tuckton to Blackwater. There does not seem to be any real pattern to their whereabouts, other than possible changes to the water level and fish stocks. They can travel up to seven miles during a day or night, so it is often a case of being there one minute and gone the next. Once spotted though it is possible, if you are quiet enough, to spend half an hour or so just watching them and having a small insight into their world. The Otters along the Stour in Christchurch have adapted to accept the urban environment they live in, from the cyclist pedalling along the riverbank, to the dog walkers, the canoeists, and the general boating traffic. If disturbed they tend to disappear for a few minutes until mum is sure all is quiet, and then they will return and carry on where they left off. Largely known as nocturnal mammals, here they can be seen at almost anytime of the day, from misty cool mornings to sunny afternoons. I have been watching this family for the last few months, and have had some wonderful moments with them. One, was when the mother swam up to me as I crouched on the riverbank, she was no more than ten feet away, standing up on her front paws, having a good look at me (and a sniff!) before turning and calmly swimming away. I have seen this mother fishing for her cubs, while they play and roll about on the bank, then the family all swim upstream together to return to the safety of their holt. I am unsure how old this local mother is, but they can live up to ten years old, although this is rare. The cubs will find their own patch once they are around thirteen to fourteen months old, as the mother breeds approximately every two years, which for these cubs is about five months away. Next time you are out walking alongside the river, keep an eye open for a five clawed footprint, and Otter spraint (a thick black unpleasant fishy smelling poo!) which is their way of marking their territory, because you may just be fortunate enough to spot a low profile head making its way along the river. Keep still, remain quiet, and just watch and enjoy... If not, there is always every chance of seeing a Kingfisher, a Cormorant, Heron, or even a majestic Bird of Prey.

Christchurch Blue Plaques by Stephen Roberts No. 15 - “Doing the Convent Walk”
“Anytime you’re Christchurch way, any evening, any day, you’ll find us all, doin’ the Convent Walk.” With all due deference to ‘Me and My Girl’, a 1937 musical and ‘The Lambeth Walk’, I only have eyes for Christchurch and the aforementioned Convent Walk is one of my favourite locales for human locomotion. The name derives from it being on part of the Priory’s land, the old Convent Meadow. The actual walk was laid out to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911 (he was a George between two Edwards) and was opened by a member of the locally-renowned Druitt family, Robert Druitt, who was Mayor at the time. The official opening of the walk took place at 10:25 am on Thursday June 22nd, a ceremony being held at the arched doorway part-way along the Walk, known as the Gin Door (or Hatch). Five minutes later the royal couple left Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach on their way to the dual Coronation in Westminster Abbey. The blue plaque is at the Gin Hatch, used by the miller at Place Mill in days gone by to control the Mill Stream when it was in flood, excess water being returned to the Avon via a short sluice. It may seem incongruous today, but it was once possible for flat-bottomed punts to enter the Mill Stream here, making their way to the water-gate of the castle at the Constable’s House.
To find Convent Walk and its plaque (17 on our map), you need to either access it just before the Town Bridge, from Castle Street, or pick it up having ventured across Place Mill Bridge, close to Place Mill and Town Quay.

There is a lot to see in a short perambulation: the Mill Stream itself, reputedly constructed over 1,000 years ago; views of Castle and Priory; and former monastic ruins such as the Priory Garderobe (that’s a ‘loo’). The plaque also tells us that a sapling, the ‘Coronation Oak’, was planted nearby, by the Mayoress, which has grown into a fully-fledged oak. Interestingly not everyone liked the name ‘Convent Walk’, some preferring ‘Coronation Walk’ (for obvious reasons) and even ‘Constitution Walk’. An ambitious programme of activities was organised to mark that auspicious event in 1911, including, apparently, an illuminated flotilla of decorated boats on the Avon. Events began early at 9 am, with the final ‘splash’, a ‘Great Mass Meeting’ in the Market Square, kicking off at 11:15 pm. The great British weather played its part, a ‘nasty drizzling rain’ setting in, ‘rendering everybody supremely miserable,’ with food served at refreshment stands ‘in not particularly happy conditions.’ You can always rely on the British weather. It looks like 2016 is going to be a bumper year for Highcliffe and I, for one, am very excited about it. For exactly 100 years ago, American self-made millionaire and shopping magnate Harry Selfridge made the imposing stately pile of Highcliffe Castle his country home. Christchurch Rotary Rotary District Governor Tony Summers has orchestrated a major fund-raising exercise to support refugee families on the Syrian Border.

Supported by fourteen local Rotary clubs, we have so far has raised over £18,200 for the ShelterBox Syrian Appeal. This major joint venture has involved the clubs of Hedge End, Southampton East, Cowes, Christchurch, Ferndown, Whitely, Westbourne, Bournemouth East, Wilton, Poole Bay, Poole, Basingstoke Lodden, Basingstoke Deane, Alderney, in total donations from 33 clubs.
ShelterBox, a charity based in Cornwall, urgently needs donations to supply emergency survival kits to refugee families. Each kit consists of tarpaulins, blankets and mattresses, in total costing £62.75, meaning that these local Rotary organisations can now support 115 families! Christchurch Rotarian Howard Matthews, ShelterBox Volunteer Representative, known to club members as ‘Mr Shelterbox’ said that “Fleeing Syrian families trapped at the Turkish border in freezing conditions are at great risk of hypothermia, our efforts in support of this appeal means that many lives will be saved”. ShelterBox has set a target of 1,000 emergency kits to be provided as soon as possible and to reach families within the next few days- helping to give shelter and prevent deaths from hypothermia in the freezing conditions. All donations to the charity will be of great benefit in helping to ameliorate this terrible crisis, which involves at least 70,000 people. Whatever your personal views are on the refugee situation, no one can deny that in this age no one should go hungry or cold. ShelterBox helps people at their most vulnerable, homeless and in need and we are delighted to have extended a helping ‘rotary hand’. Out come the holiday brochures, just a quick look, after all where could be better to spend your holidays than Christchurch. As it seems very likely that the new school will be situated at Marsh Lane it is imperative that residents contact their councillors to voice their opinions of future parking and traffic calming. Obviously some areas will be more affected than others but if your views are made known then hopefully a solution that benefits both residents and parents will be possible. The litterbins have been withdrawn from the Quomps in order to save money and hope that if encouraged the public will take their rubbish home with them. We feel that this is unlikely to happen, with ‘takeaway’ drinks, sandwiches etc, who is going to take home a soggy carton and a cardboard container? Also there will have to be notices informing the public, which in itself will look unsightly.

It is with regret that the free parking in certain car parks will not be in operation during the next Christmas period, local traders already struggle with residents travelling out of town to shop where there is ample free parking, so this concession was vitally important to Christchurch. The consultation period for this was between December 17th and January 6th, and with this being a very busy time for people we fear this went ahead largely unnoticed. Nigel Cook our chairman is stepping down from this office and we would like to express our grateful thanks for all his hard work during the past years. NEW STARTING BLOCKS FOR SEAGULLS SWIMMING CLUB
Just before Christmas 2015, Seagulls Swimming Club took delivery of six brand new Omega starting blocks. Seagulls, who are based at Two Riversmeet Leisure Centre in Christchurch, spent the previous twelve months fundraising for this amazing addition to the Club. Generous donations from the ‘Bournemouth Airport Community Fund’ and the ‘Steve Bernard Foundation’ helped the Club achieve its £10,000 target. The fundraising effort culminated in June with a ‘3 Peaks Challenge’. This involved an intrepid team of parents, friends and the Head Coach climbing the three highest peaks in Scotland, Wales and England within 24 hours. It was a huge success and was greatly supported by local businesses, friends and members of the Club. The blocks were installed over the Christmas period and were ready to use on the first training day of 2016. These are the same type of blocks that currently sit in the Aquatic Centre in London and were used in the 2012 Olympic Games. They are a huge asset to the Club and will benefit swimmers for years to come.
Head Coach Glenn Bailey said “Not only are the new Omega starting blocks state of the art equipment, they provide additional visual and physical motivation for the swimmers we have and the users of the centre. A fantastic effort by the Three-Peakers and the Seagulls Committee to make this happen, inspiring more of the younger generation to get involved with swimming.” Seagulls is a competitive swimming club, which also has a thriving Water Polo and Synchronised Swimming section. Happy April!
As it’s Eastertime, I will be enjoying the usual Easter chocolates and eggs. This is Emily definitely a necessity this year as I am in the middle of my A level revision and I need to keep my energy levels up! It is always easier to work when it is cold outside but as soon as we get some sunshine, it is harder to focus. It’s weird to think that these are my last exams to revise for at Twynham and I won’t have to go there daily anymore like I have been for the last seven years! I’m looking forward to a long holiday abroad with friends in July after my exams finish. Spring is definitely on the way and as well as daffodils in the garden, I always know that it is springtime when the Chilly Wizard Ice Cream Parlour reopens. Situated on the corner of Saxon Square, they serve delicious home made ice cream with a variety of sprinkles on the top if you wish. This family business has been in Christchurch for many years and I can remember the excitement of visiting The Chilly Wizard when I was a little girl. There’s also seating around the side of the store, which is in the shade so you can get out of the sun and have a rest. Walking through Christchurch Quay is always lovely at the start of spring. A lovely place to visit is the Place Mill, which re-opens again for public admission on the 5th April. Admission is free and it is home to lots of beautiful artwork including wildlife, portraits and landscapes. Occasionally there are artists at the mill, which is beneficial to anyone interested in art themselves. They are also available to speak to and ask questions to which is very helpful! HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? SPRING HAS SPRUNG
Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs! Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from well-rotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds!

Plant a container-grown shrub Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the rootball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the rootball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the rootball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.

Scouting life in Christchurch
April is an important month in the Scouting calendar.

23rd April is St George’s day and as many of you will know, we have a tradition in Christchurch of parading along the High Street to the Priory Church. This year the parade is on Sunday 24th April and as always will be led by our own Scout and Guide Band. The Mayor will be taking the salute. St George is of course the patron Saint of England, but he is also the patron Saint of Scouting, hence the double importance of Scouting being seen on this day. You may ask why he should be associated with Scouting? The reason comes from our founder Lord Baden-Powell. He wrote in “Scouting for Boys”; “When he (St George) was faced by a difficulty or danger, however great it appeared, even in the shape of a dragon - he did not avoid it or fear it but went at it with all the power he could...That is exactly the way a Scout should face a difficulty or danger no matter how great or how terrifying it may appear. They should go at it boldly and confidently, using every power that they can to try and overcome it, and the probability is that they will succeed.” In the Priory each member of the Scouting family will renew their Promise. The service is organised each year by a different Scout Group, this year is Highcliffe’s turn. I know they are preparing an interesting service. Hopefully the weather will be fine and we look forward to seeing you on our route. Also this month we hold our Annual General Meeting, the opportunity to reflect on the year and for me to thank all our volunteers. We also get to re-live some of the fun and experiences with our young people. Next issue – our Scout Band!!

Since I last wrote our cadets have been busy preparing for and attending the first Company Weekend of the year. A chance for many of our newest cadets to experience what the ACF has to offer outside the detachment and to meet other members of our company from Bovington, West Moors, Lytchett and Wimborne. This year we were based at Stanley Barracks, Bovington and for many of the younger, newer cadets this was their first time away from home, sleeping in a billet and having to organise themselves and their kit, thankfully there were always older cadets about to pass on their experience and knowledge. The cadets took part in many activities including physical training in the mornings before breakfast, Fieldcraft, First Aid, Navigation, Observation, Drill and Shooting, with the Basic cadets taking their first steps in marksmanship and safe weapon handling on the Scorpion Air Rifle.

Mum’s the Word I’m hopeful by the time this article is in print, spring has truly sprung and I have taken my girls for our annual trip to the Bluebell forest (or fairy forest as its known in our house) at Pamphill in Wimborne.

When in bloom it’s as wonderful a sight as seeing your coveted shoes on sale. Just this is free. Like most parents, I’m already looking forward to getting back to the beach, parks, and just generally life outside with a dollop of sunscreen. Everything just seems that bit easier in the sun, and Christchurch evolves once again to a buzzing atmosphere of music festivals, boat trips and picnics on the Quay. But whilst we are still waiting for the days where our cars get saturated in sand and ice cream, there are still a few warmer alternatives to check out. Alvin and The Chipmunks, The Movie, is showing on various dates throughout the beginning of April at The Regent Centre (please see the listings on page 51 for details) always nicely followed by our very own ‘dessert’ cafe Indulge Yourself, which is footsteps away. I don’t need much convincing. Last spring, the girls and I marked the start of the warmer weather by making a fairy garden, out of some goldfish ornaments, bark and a dog bed. This year I saw a great idea of blowing up your paddling pool, filling it up with duvets, pillows and blankets and doing ‘night time’ stargazing in the garden. I thought this was a simple, cheap and cheerful idea, and an excuse for some hot chocolate to follow, or if no paddling pool you could always see the night sky from St Catherine’s Hill woods, there are some great spots up there for views over the town.
Crockpot Salsa Chicken INGREDIENTS 6 chicken breasts, boneless, skinless 1 jar mild salsa/fajita/enchilada sauce 1 cup grated cheese
METHOD
Preheat oven to 200 celsius/Gas Mark 6. Place whole chicken breasts in your crockpot and pour the salsa over it. Cook anywhere from 1½ to 2 hours, you don’t want to cook it longer because it will start falling apart. Take an 8 x 8 baking dish or 9 x 13, depending on how big your chicken breasts are, then carefully place the chicken in the dish. Spoon some of the leftover salsa (from the crockpot) over the chicken and sprinkle evenly with the cheese. Bake for a further 15 minutes or until it’s nice and golden brown, and you see the sauce and cheese bubbling.
