COVER LETTER
To whom it may concern,
I am excited to be approaching my fifth year in the architecture program! This milestone represents the culmination of years of hard work, and I am eager to begin the capstone that will bring my education to its peak. Combining my knowledge from the past few years with my prior engineering experience, I have developed a unique perspective that merges technical precision with creative vision.
I believe architecture should not only minimize environmental harm but actively work to restore and preserve it. By integrating architecture into nature and harnessing natural processes, we can create a symbiotic relationship between the built and natural environments. My portfolio reflects these values, showcasing projects that emphasize ecological sustainability and harmony with the natural world, informed by my deep interest in permaculture.
My ultimate goal is to establish a family-run firm with my brother, a practicing architect, my sister, a civil engineer, and my father, a contractor. This vision shapes how I approach architecture: emphasizing collaboration, sustainability, and practicality. My portfolio reflects these values, featuring projects that prioritize ecological and building sustainability, inspired by my deep interest in permaculture and the natural world.
My top three preferences—the Gensler / GastingerWalker KU Co-op, Studio 804, and the Social Entrepreneur program—closely align with my academic and professional aspirations. The Gensler / GastingerWalker KU Co-op is my top choice because it provides the invaluable opportunity to gain real-world experience at leading firms, bridging academic knowledge with professional application. Their professional dedication to this field would serve me greatly to better understand the logistics and back-of-house work needed to run a successful design firm.
Studio 804 excites me for its hands-on design-build approach, allowing me to deepen my understanding of construction systems while contributing to a tangible, sustainable project. My previous experience in Studio 509 and working on home renovations has helped me discover the fulfillment that comes from not only designing but also physically bringing a project to life, fostering a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and effort involved in construction.
The Social Entrepreneur program resonates with my commitment to addressing societal challenges, such as designing affordable, equitable housing that meets the needs of underserved communities. This program would allow me to explore innovative strategies to create sustainable, community-driven solutions that foster social equity and improve quality of life for those who need it most.
I bring a strong foundation in technical proficiency, creative problem-solving, and a deep passion for sustainability to these programs. My experiences, combined with my enthusiasm for collaboration and commitment to excellence, make me a strong candidate for this opportunity. I am eager to contribute meaningfully while continuing to grow as a designer and future architect.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to grow, learn, and contribute meaningfully to these transformative programs.
Sincerely,

Chris Monarres
