When Hope is Lost Luke 24:21 "But we had hoped that he was the one going to redeem Israel..." These were the words spoken by two disciples who had just witnessed the horrific crucifixion and death of Jesus. It was Resurrection Sunday. They had just gotten word that the body was not in the grave. It was only a few days earlier when Jesus was heralded into Jerusalem with praise and worship from the people. Then the chief priests and scribes, their own leaders, handed Him over to the Romans to be executed. Everything they had hoped for suddenly vanished.
To fully understand their devastation, consider the times in which they were living. Their homeland was being occupied by a foreign government. Roman soldiers policed their streets and neighborhoods. Heavy taxes were placed on them for many years. There was political unrest. Their cries for relief from Roman tyranny went unanswered. Then there was Jesus. They knew the prophets had promised a Messiah. He checked all the boxes. He was the one. He was the king they had been promised. He would establish his kingdom on earth. Israel would be redeemed and restored. Rome would be defeated. It could not be stopped; until it was. Now they can’t even visit the grave because His body is gone. Can it get any worse?

I believe all of us have been there. We go to God for our requests, and we become expectant that He will answer on our terms.It never dawns on us that He may answer on His. His answer is always better, always timed right and always according to His word. The stranger that begins to walk with these two men is Jesus. They didn’t recognize Jesus because He didn’t reveal Himself, but He did reveal His word. The word of God is enough to provide the answers we desperately need. In this 7 mile walk out of Jerusalem to Emmaus Jesus was giving them their first Sunday school and history lesson. He started with Moses and the prophets. He was telling them what we need to do as well. Search the word for God’s promises. Check the word when we are discouraged. Study the word when seeking direction. Remember the word when Satan places doubt in your heart. It took a breaking of bread and a dinner prayer for them to finally realize who He was! Continued on page 2
