Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society Michael Harrison was our invited speaker for the May 1st meeting and the chosen subject was “The History of Mining.” Michael began by telling us he was very aware he was speaking to an audience that had many mining connections and that he would welcome comments from former members of the industry. The history of coal begins around 300 million years ago when ancient forests were covered with layer upon layer of rotting vegetation. Small creatures, insects, flora and fauna etc. became trapped between the layers and these are often found as fossils in the resultant coal. There is evidence that coal was being mined in China 3000 years ago. Michael told us that when the Romans invaded Britain, their soldiers were scared off as black faced miners exited a coal pit. The very first pits were “bell pits”. So called because it was just a hole that was enlarged at the depth where the coal was

found and became shaped like a bell. A very dangerous practice. These bell pits were never completely filled in and are thought to be the cause of many of the mysterious sink holes that appear today. Michael had so many fascinating and amusing stories to tell us. When Queen Eleanor, the wife of Henry III made a visit to Nottingham, she reportedly said that she needed to leave as soon as possible because she could not abide the coal smoke. Spectacular Summer fair “We’re all going on a Summer Holiday”, or at least we can think so – for an hour or two -at this year’s Ravenshead Spectacular Summer Fair, to be held at St Peter’s Church, the Centre and grounds. So come and join us and as the song goes “make your dreams come true”.

There will be lots of fun at the Fair with family games and loads for young people to enjoy, not to mention the excellent Mickey the clown who will once again be creating wonderful balloon sculptures to give away. This year’s programme of entertainment features talented local choirs and dance groups who are looking forward to putting

on a great show. The excellent and very enthusiastic Fun Choir, a group with over 40 members, will bring the show to a lively climax.

The Arnold Fire Station will be displaying a Fire Engine and from Hucknall Ambulance Station there will be a Paramedic vehicle on display for you to look round, so come and meet your Emergency cover teams. (Continued on page 17)

World Autism Awareness Week World Autism Awareness Week is held each year, leading up to World Autism Awareness Day to improve understanding of Autism across the World and a chance to recognise the 1 in 100 individuals on the spectrum, their abilities, their strengths and their contribution to the community.

I was lucky, while on my visit to Sydney in April this year, to attend an Autism Awareness Conference held at the iconic Sydney Opera House during the Autism Week. I was moved and inspired by listening to each of the remarkable Speakers sharing their personal account of their efforts to shine a light on Autism and to bring it to the attention of the global community. Sydney-based GP James Best took his teenage son Sam on a backpacking journey around Africa to improve his life skills. The photos we saw were remarkable, it was a life changing experience for Sam and their sense of humour delighted me. US-based journalists John Donvan and Caren Zucker published the bestselling book, “IN A DIFFERENT KEY: The Story of Autism”. They both spoke about the sensory issues of Autism, creating a better

understanding within people to make the Autistic person develop. We also heard Chris Bonello, who specially came from UK - “Autistic Not Weird” - he was late diagnosed. He told us about his journey. He described the strengths of Autism, how to look at these differences in a positive way. He put a good message across that it is good to help manage Autism by giving the young people responsibility. Australian artist Tim Sharp turned his artwork into a TV series and produced his artwork into an award winning Broadway Play. His mom spoke about his remarkable journey and his achievements. What struck me the most was how each of these speakers portrayed Autism in a positive light and taught you many ways to manage your Autism and concentrate on your strengths to progress and lead a fulfilling life. I learnt of the age of diagnosis and how much the autism effects the person and how they found ways of improving it. The event ended with networking and canapés. Tarannum Shad

A MEGA Adventure for Farnsfield Scouts & Guides 19 May 2018: THOUSANDS of young people have been enjoying the thrills and spills of Nottinghamshire Scouts’ and Guides’ biggest camp of 2018. About 4,500 young people and adults from across Nottinghamshire flocked to Walesby Forest Activity Centre for a bank holiday weekend of fun and adventure. It was the first event in many years where both the Scout and Guide organisations came together to offer a very special event for their members. It saw close to one hundred young people from Farnsfield Scouts & Guides join others to experience adventure and explore new challenges. Farnsfield Guides and Scouts joined forces to give as much opportunity as possible to young people from Farnsfield and surrounding areas to experience this unique event.

The event officially opened on Friday night followed by three days of adventure. Activities ranged from zip wires to ice skating, gladiator duelling to star-gazing and quad biking in the forest: there was also the chance to have a go at a freefall stunt bag jump! The big favourite was Zorbing, where the young people got inside a giant inflatable wheel and pushed it round a course. On the Sunday, forty members of Farnsfield Beavers joined in the activities, getting a glimpse of what adventures can happen on a mega activity weekend. Get gardening with Greg - flaming June After an unrelenting winter we have been treated to a truly magnificent May so what will June have in store for us? June is the month of festivals, flower shows and of course, Wimbledon and as any long-running tennis fan (or Glastonbury-goer) will tell you, June is a month of two halves; a settled, sunny beginning often followed by a deluge in the latter part of the month, courtesy of the ‘return of the westerlies’, the name given to the changeable weather patterns travelling eastwards from the Atlantic.

One thing you can (almost) guarantee from June is that the risk of frost has passed hence why the traditional date to plant out summer bedding plants is June 1st. Thanks to modern growing methods, the wholesale plant nurseries are supplying us garden centres with tender annuals from early April so it is unsurprising that the majority of summer bedding is sold in May when the plant benches are full of colour, even though the risk of frost is still present. While we cannot guarantee the weather, there are a number of factors within our control to make sure we get the best out of our summer plants. Getting your plants off to a good start is key. When planting up pots and hanging baskets make sure you use a good quality multi-purpose such as Jack’s Magic or a specialist tub and basket compost; Miracle Gro Moisture Control is ideal. If you are just looking to refresh the existing compost in your planters, consider mixing in some Farmyard Manure which will help give it a boost of nutrients. Prior to planting up, mix slow release feed into the compost which will keep feeding the plants all the way through the season, which means you won’t have to! Another tip to get your bedding plants off to a cracking start, is to make up a solution of Tomorite feed in a bucket and gently dunk each plant, avoiding the foliage, just prior to planting. Fully saturating the com-

post ensures your plants are both well fed and watered as you are planting up and tomato feeds contain high levels of nutrients which encourage flowering (and fruiting). Don’t forget to water the whole finished planter or basket at the end. Mixing in water-retaining granules will also help to even out the effects of irregular watering which would otherwise inhibit the growth of your plants. Watering regularly and at the right time of day can be a chore but will pay dividends when it comes to the success of your summer plants. Planters and hanging baskets should not be allowed to fully dry out but similarly should not be kept too wet, as this will lead to fungal diseases and rotting off. In hot weather, water in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the foliage and blooms as much as possible so as not to mark or scorch the flowers. In the borders, applying a mulch or bark chippings around the plants will help to keep water loss to a minimum. June is the month to plant out outdoor tomatoes and cucumbers (although they will always be more successful when grown in a greenhouse or poly tunnel) and to generally busy yourself in the veg garden. The choice of tomato varieties gets bigger every year, gone are the days when your choice was limited to Moneymaker and Shirley! Heritage varieties and grafted tomato plants, despite their higher price, are increasing in popularity. Some people are put off growing their veg, thinking they will need acres of land or it will be too labour intensive (particularly time-poor working parents) but the joy of fresh homegrown produce can be experienced even on the smallest of scales and with minimal effort. Herbs and loose leaf salads are ideal for container growing; a simple planter of salad leaves or rocket is easy to grow from seed or using ready-grown plants from the garden centre and works out much cheaper compared with buying bagged salad from

the supermarket. Not to mention how much better your own fresh salad leaves will taste! The key to salads is to keep cropping and your plants will keep on giving.‘Vertical planting’ is another way of finding extra space in your garden and can be simply achieved using wall troughs. There are varieties of trailing tomato plants which are also ideal for vertical planting or in hanging baskets, just make sure they are kept well watered! Swiss chard is another good choice for the novice veg-grower; like spinach but less likely to ‘bolt’ (going to seed) during hot weather. Kids will be fascinated by a variety called ‘Bright Lights’ ; the bright, multicoloured stems are as decorative as they are delicious and bring some added interest to mixed borders when planted amongst your flowers. Don’t forget our experienced gardeners are always on hand to give you advice if you are looking for inspiration and guidance, to help you achieve an enjoyable outdoor space. Have a great month in the garden! www.timmermansgardencentre.com

Making town centre friendly to elderly A new scheme aimed at making town centres in Nottinghamshire more accessible for older people has been launched in Mansfield. Age Friendly Nottinghamshire’s Take A Seat initiative wants more shops, businesses and meeting places to have a seat available in case an older person needs to catch their breath and rest while they are out shopping.

The scheme, supported by Mansfield District Council, aims to raise awareness of how older people sometimes struggle to access their local area because there is not enough seating available for them to rest.

takeaseat — as they sign up.

Coun Gordon Wheeler, vice-chairman of the Communities and Place Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council and Age Friendly Ambassador for Nottinghamshire, said: “Simple initiatives like this can really make a difference to people’s lives. “We are passionate about helping older people and those with disabilities to stay independent and connected to their communities — the Take A Seat initiative will help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation by ensuring older people can still get out and about.”

A third of older people are identified as lonely. Many become isolated because they find it increasingly difficult to walk from their homes to local shops and community venues. A lack of seating to rest when out can be a significant barrier to them leaving their home. Take A Seat is free to sign up to for businesses and will be rolled out to other areas of the county over the next two years. Go to www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/takeaseat

Advice is also provided to premises on how to make them more age friendly in other ways, such as making sure floors are level and clutter free to prevent trips and slips, lighting is clear and bright, steps have a handrail, products on shelves are within easy reach, toilets are provided where possible and any music is played at a moderate level. We Are Age Friendly stickers will be displayed in all shops and premises taking part in the initiative. The sticker aims to reassure older shoppers that they will be given a warm welcome and offered a chair to have a seat and rest. The first business to sign up to the scheme in Mansfield was Debenhams. The names of other Age Friendly businesses will be listed at the Take A Seat webpage — www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/

Blidworth Parish Council Annual meeting Thank you to all of you who attended our Annual Parish meeting at the end of April. It was great opportunity to meet and hear about all the activities and groups that are working hard within the Village.

The Dogs Trust along with the Newark and Sherwood District Council Dog Warden visited Blidworth Oaks School last month to talk about ‘Dog Mess’ in the Village. The children were invited to design a poster to help make people stop and think about the impact this is having on the Village – You

may have spotted some of the fabulous designs by your children dotted around the Village. A big thank you to everyone who took part. We were pleased to welcome Sgt Hurley and PCSO John Arins to our Parish Council meeting in April, to discuss issues raised around the Village. They have urged members of the public who witness any crime to dial 101 and report it. Our fabulous War Memorial gardener Mrs Dabbs has asked for any donations of

knitted poppies please. We are hoping to decorate the War memorial with 100 red poppies and all donations would be gratefully received. Please bring your knits in to the Parish Office. We would also like to remind you about the use of your local recycling centres. Information about recycling and where to dispose of your waste is available on the Nottinghamshire County Council Website Please take a look, you would be surprised at what can be recycled!

Blidworth & District Historical & Heritage Society (Continued from page 1) The use of coal on a large scale began in the 16th century. Production expanded rapidly, improved technology and working practices accelerated the process. By the 18th century, local mines were being sunk to a depth of 300ft. The 19th century saw Gedling colliery reach coal at 1377ft. These conditions made it necessary to introduce powerful steam winders that could bring up 3000 tons of coal at 50-60ft per second and production stopped for nothing. In 1908 the Nottinghamshire coalfield produced over 11 million tons and boasted that there was enough coal to continue producing for 500 years. Michael explained about the many disasters that occurred in the industry, the loss of so many fathers, brothers, sons, and the resultant hardship of the families. Most of the Nottinghamshire mines were sunk in the late 19th or early 20th century when mine safety became more of an issue and thankfully, although not completely free, avoided many potential catastrophes. The second half of our monthly meeting was spent reviewing and discussing some photos of old Rainworth that were recently donated to our society by a relative of James Spinks who wrote many items about the history of Rainworth. James was the grandson of Albert Spinks, the game keeper employed by Joseph Whitaker. The photos were shown on the big screen and were mainly of life around the Village Green and Ramsden Croft area. We saw how many shops were wooden structures and the post office shared a building with

a motor car repair business that was also a petrol station. There was a picture showing the foundation stone laying for St. Simon & St. Jude’s church on 23rd July 1938. The building was completed in 1939. We also showed a magnificent photo taken in 1879, depicting the planting of the elm tree on the Village Green, attended by the Mayor of Mansfield, and another photo of the tree being cut down around 1965. Our next three meetings are as follows; •June 5th – Howard Heeley, Stained Glass Aviation Commemoration. •July 3rd – John North, Experience Nottinghamshire. •Aug 7th – Peter Hammond, Nottingham-

shire’s Oliver Twist. •Our meetings are in the Function Room of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm and ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. Our book, 'Blidworth and the First Word War' can be purchased at £10 from 'Miss Victoria's Shabby Chic Furniture Shop' at 39 Mansfield Road, Blidworth, telephone 07712693966 or at www.blidworthhistoricalsociety.co.uk Email: blidworthhistory@virginmedia.com

Send us an electronic copy of photographs with a few details and we will try to publish them in a future edition. In each edition we devote pages to

news of achievements and success by individuals and groups in the area. Email chloe@news-journal.co.uk with your news and photographs or suggestions of items to be included.

Sam’s Workplace - Fun, laughter and tears Well this month has been a whirlwind yet again. We have had lots of fun in our workshop making some awesome gifts for teachers for the end of term …. make sure you pop in and get some before they sell out. The guys have worked so hard on all the gifts and they definitely reflect the love and care that’s been put into them …. We’ve also been planning ahead and making Father’s Day gifts …. ready in preparation for 18 June. All gifts are reasonably priced - come in and have a look We take card payments too! We have also had the privilege of speaking at the Blidworth & Rainworth Women’s Institute this May, telling them about the

work that Sam’s Workplace does and the progression of our fantastic young adults here. It was a lot of fun, with lots of laughter and we just wanted to say a massive thank you to the W.I. for making us so welcome there, and for their most generous donation towards our work. I’m just impressed I remembered the words to Jerusalem! We are also extending our savouries range - pop in and try them - you know you want to! On a less than positive note, we suffered some vandalism to the rear of our property on Preston Road. Whilst we are deeply saddened by this, we have to say we were

extremely impressed and proud of our young adults’ reaction to this. Although they were upset, they got stuck in straight away to clear the mess, tidy everywhere up and put it back to how it was. This area is used as an outdoor sensory area and is used by them all. Their attitude and work ethic to repair and make it their area again was an inspiration and credit to them, and we couldn’t be more proud of them all. So glad to see the sunshine now - let’s hope for a fantastic warm spell - don’t forget we sell ice creams and lollies too. Sam’s Workplace, 37 Preston Road, Rainworth, NG21 0BA. Tel: 01623 797240

Birchalls second in Slovakia It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Birchall Racing at the second round of the 2018 FIM Sidecar World Championship at the Slovakia Ring Circuit, Slovakia. A technical issue forced the team to pit on Friday’s sprint race but they were able to salvage three championship points after rejoining the race. Things improved for the Mansfield-based brothers as they claimed a hard-fought runner-up spot to bag 20 valuable championship points. Off the pace in the first qualifying session, the team worked overnight to set up the Mitchells of Mansfield-supported outfit to suit the new Slovakian track. Finding twoand-a-half seconds, the Birchalls claimed pole position in the second qualifying session, setting a new lap record in the process. Unfortunately, an electrical issue caused the machine to stop soon after the start of the sprint race. After rejoining, a coming together with another competitor ended

up damaging the Yamaha LCR outfit and the pair had no option but to pit and make repairs. Back out on track the Birchalls finished in 13th position and claimed three championship points.

Saturday’s Gold Race brought different fortunes as Ben and Tom enjoyed great pace in a four-way battle for the win. With the lead changing multiple times throughout the course of the 13-lap event the Birchalls did everything they could to take the lead while defending from the outfits behind. At the line the brothers were just pipped by the eventual winners by just point-four of a second. The 20 points keep the Mansfield team firmly in the title hunt going into the next world round at the Sachsenring, Germany at the end of June. Ben Birchall: “It feels really good, after such a tricky weekend to get second place and claim some strong championship points. “I want to say thank you to Craig Fitz-

patrick for all the help he gave us over the course of the event with the technical issues we had.

“Hopefully at the next round in Germany we’ll be able to go one better and take the top step of the podium. Until then our focus is now on the TT where we hope to repeat our performance of last year and come out with a couple more wins.” Tom Birchall: “After a really tough start to the weekend it felt great to be able to fight for the win on Saturday. It was a shame we just got pipped at the line but it was a great battle with the other guys. We really enjoyed the new circuit – the Slovakia Ring is a great place to race at and provided some good competitive action for the fans. I’m looking forward to the TT now and hopefully we can get some more good results.” Birchall Racing’s next outing will be the Isle of Man TT races.

Farnsfield Local History Society THE WINKBURN MURDER OF 1821 was the subject of the talk given by local Queen's Counsel and Recorder Paul Mann. It proved to be a very entertaining (if gruesome) evening. A hawker from Chesterfield was on his way to Kelham in July 1821 and was last seen alive in the Blacksmith's Arms inn at Winkburn. His body was not found until December and as there was then no police force the local magistrate in Southwell, Rev. Becher (founder of the Workhouse) was responsible for investigating the crime. Paul explained how he did this by interviewing various people, the victim's father and those who had acquired goods that the Hawker had had in his bag from the person who was then arrested for the murder. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 9th May when Dr. Richard Gaunt from Nottingham University will tell us about the Pentrich Rebellion of 1817.

On Monday 21st May at 2.00 we have arranged a guided tour of the St. Ann's Allotments in Nottingham, the oldest and most extensive allotments in the world, having Grade 2* listing by English Heritage. If you would be interested in joining us then please contact David and Judith Milnes on 01623 882454 for more details. We have also booked a coach to visit Eden Camp in North Yorkshire on Wednesday, 5th September. We meet in the lower hall of the village centre on New Hill at 7.30. Visitors are most welcome. includes refreshments. Annual membership is £15. Please look at our website www.farnsfieldlhs.co.uk for our programme, photographs and lots more

Farnsfield Local History Society

It is November 1817 and you are among the crowd of six thousand people in Derby Marketplace. What have you come for? To see three men dragged around the square on hurdles, then see them hanged (taking half an hour to die), taken down and have heir heads chopped off. This was the final act in what is today known as the Pentrich Rebellion. Farnsfield Local History Society welcomed Dr. Richard Gaunt from the University of Nottingham to our May meeting who gave a fascinating account of the Rebellion, detailing the reasons why it occurred, the march from Pentrich by about four hundred men towards Nottingham with the expectation that its citizens and the garrison at Nottingham Castle would join them. (They did not.) Jeremiah Brandreth was the ring leader who had come up from Nottingham and he and the other two were charged with treason. Dr Gaunt explained that from the outset there was little chance of success as there was a double agent know as Oliver who kept the Government informed of what was planned. As in other years we provided a historical figure for the Scarecrow Festival and this year to celebrate the success of the campaign for VOTES FOR WOMEN in 1918 we chose to have a suffragette scarecrow. She attracted many favourable comments from the large number of people who turned out on the hottest early May Bank Holiday on record. Two of our members opened up the old lock- up on Mansfield Road as a pop-up Museum and were delighted by the many visitors they had. Congratulations to them for all the research they did on this. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, 13th June (Lower hall of the Village Centre, New Hill). “A CABINET OF CURIOSITIES”. Lily Ann Dawes will talk about the Duchess of Portland, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck. She was an extraordinary woman, friend of actors, politicians and a lady who frequently had royalty drop in unannounced. But she was no Empty vessel and her collecting passion helped form part of the collection the became the British Museum. Visitors welcome £3. We have booked a coach to visit Eden Camp in North Yorkshire on Wednesday, 5thSeptember. If you would be interested in joining us then please contact David and Judith Milnes on 01623 882454 for more details. Please look at our website www.farnsfieldlhs.co.uk

Garden Bird of the Month Reed Bunting Despite the name of this bird, it doesn’t necessarily live amongst reed beds. There was a time when its habitat was predominantly marshes and fens but over the years many such areas have been drained and since the 1960’s the Reed Bunting can be found on moorland, conifer plantations, grassy sand dunes and oilseed rape fields. In fact, densities of this species are highest in the latter. During the winter months, they are often joined by Scandinavian migrants and they will roost together in large numbers for safety. In winter and late spring when there may be a shortage of seed in the natural environment, they may venture in to gardens.

Photo: John Harding /BTO The Reed Bunting is similar in size to the House Sparrow but it has a longer notched tail, and streaked underparts. The upperparts are reddish brown with dark streaks. The male has a smart black head and white collar and moustache. In winter,

the head and neck of the male turns a dull brown which can make identification rather tricky. The upperparts of the female are slightly lighter than the male, the underparts are the same but the female has a brown head and buff throat all year round. In spring the male establishes his territory with a rather weak and simple call. The female only will construct a nest either on the ground or very close to it amongst undergrowth. The first clutch is laid in May. The Reed Bunting is known to be the most adulterous bird in Britain and over half the chicks in a nest may not have been fathered by the female’s mate. Both parents feed the young on an insect diet until they are fledged and they will protect their young by feigning injury to draw the attention of a predator from the nest. They will sometimes raise two broods but sometimes the second brood will perish if crops are cut in summer. However, they seem to survive spraying with herbicides. If you are out and about in the countryside and you see a bird which looks similar to a sparrow, do check carefully as it may possibly be a Reed Bunting. Jean Powley Jean is a voluntary Ambassador for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in Nottinghamshire. If you enjoy watching birds and other wildlife which visit your garden, Garden BirdWatch may be perfect for you. If you would like a free information pack about the scheme, contact Jean at jpbirds@outlook.com or visit www.bto.org/gbw

Summer fashion essentials Summer has come about. We are in the process of booking our holidays and shopping for a few extras to tick off our holiday list.

What we do need on our list is a few beach dresses. Having come back from Australia I had noticed the un certernity of changing rooms by the bays and beaches. Beach dresses are an ideal easy wear cover over our swimsuits and bikinis. They are comfortable to wear and can also have quick dry resistance. How handy can that be. I have selected a few favourites. Top Shop and River Island have good fashion choice for the ideal Summer beachwear range. Tarannum Shad

Yoga breathing for fit bodies and minds

breathing and meditation promote concentration and relaxation.

Experts in both therapeutic traditions and modern medicine believe in the intimate relationship between our breathing patterns and our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Try the following exercise: sit comfortably in a chair. Close your eyes and visualise a swan gliding peacefully across a crystal-clear lake. Now, like the swan, let your breath flow along in a long, smooth and peaceful movement. Inhale and exhale through your nose. Extend your breath to its comfortable maximum for 20 repetitions. Gradually let your breath return to normal.

Studies have shown that natural, healthy respiration not only increases longevity and supports our overall well-being and self-development, but also helps in medical conditions such as asthma, poor digestion, insomnia, low energy, high blood pressure, anxiety, panic attacks, heart ailments, and many other problems. A breath of fresh air With each breath, oxygen enters your body and triggers the transformation of nutrients into energy. With each exhalation toxic carbon dioxide is eliminated from your body. The presence of oxygen purifies the blood and vitalises every cell in your body and it is required to maintain vital organs. In normal conditions the body follows a natural breathing pattern that is slow and regulated. When breathing is slow, deep and full, the lungs work more, the diaphragm moves well, back and abdominal muscles work fully, drawing in extra oxygen to the blood stream. Under stress, the body begins to tighten the muscles, and you may feel anxiety, hyperactivity and anger. During this time breathing becomes quick and shallow. Your natural healthy breathing pattern is disturbed and you will tend to breath

erratically or hold your breath.

Learning to regulate breathing patterns is just as vital as the yogic positions.

By restricting your breathing, the inflow of oxygen is restricted. Lungs are unable to exhale the stale airs and residual toxins build up inside the body. Under stress, the stiff muscles restrict the circulation of the blood, so even less oxygen comes in and fewer toxins are removed. It affects the healthy regeneration of cells. Medical studies indicate that the oxygen-starved cells are contributing factors in cancer, immunity deficiency, heart disease and strokes. Breathing also affects our state of mind and consequently makes our thinking either confused or clear. Pranayama Regulating your breathing patterns during yoga sessions is just as vital as the yogic positions. Slow, controlled conscious breathing has a calming effect on the emotions, reducing fear and anxiety in the nervous system. Regulated and mindful breathing, dynamic movement of the head, shoulders and arms during the practice of

Afterwards, take a few moments to sit with your eyes closed and notice the difference in how you feel overall.

A multitude of different ethnicities influences Nepal’s cuisine. Generally healthier than most other South Asian cuisine, it relies less on fats and more on chunky vegetables, lean meats, pickled ingredients and salads. In this mountainous country the food is heavily influenced by its neighbours, India, Pakistan, China and Tibet. Only opening its borders to outsiders in the 1950s, Nepal has experienced a multitude of transport and trade difficulties, making its focus locally grown produce. Common ingredients found across Nepalese cuisine include, lentils, tomatoes, cumin, coriander, chilies, peppers, garlic and mustard oil; potatoes are a newer addition to the region. Yoghurt, or dahi is eaten for its healthy attributes and adaptable nature, as it can be used as a side dish or as an ingredient in drinks (Lassi) and desserts (Sikarni). Pulao - Rice is the obvious staple for many Nepalese dishes, Vegetable pulao in particular can be found throughout Nepal, and consists of fried rice with vegetables which have been lightly seasoned with turmeric and cumin.

Dal Bhat - If Nepal had a national dish this would be it. This rice dish, or rice substitute, such as cornmeal and barley, is served alongside lentils and surrounded by various different dishes. Sides can include pickles, curried dishes, meat or fish, yoghurt, and chutney. The variations of this dish are countless Momo – (Similar to the Gyoza found in Japan) Nepal’s version of dumplings and a

Thukpa - A Nepalese hot noodle soup, containing pieces of meat and vegetables, a warming and comforting dish. Meaning ‘noodle’ in Tibetan, is often eaten alongside momo. The carefully seasoned meat stock gives the dish a very pleasant aroma, the Nepalese version is sometimes spicier.

Sel Roti - is a cross between a doughnut and a bagel, made of rice flour and is like no other bread in the world. Crispy and sweet on the outside with a puffy and soft-textured dough inside. The rice flour bread is deep fried and worked into a circular shape, like a pretzel. Great at breakfast, perfect when dipped in yoghurt, alongside vegetables.

Gorkhali Lamb - An intense and filling curry dish. The curry is chunky with slow cooked lamb and potatoes with roughly chopped onions. For more flavour, the lamb is often grilled and sealed with a chili mixture before being transferred to the

Woodborough Bridge Club This is not strictly speaking about the Woodborough Bridge Club, but it is about Bridge. On Tuesday 17th April, the Weekday Cross area in Nottingham saw more than the usual number of bright eyed and determined people pounding its pavements. Some twenty members of WBC were among them. It was the tenth and largest Nottingham Café Bridge event and 84 people met at Café Contemporary for coffee and the day’s briefing. They were moved by an address by Alison Furlong of Rainbows Children’s Hospice which was the day’s charity. Armed with individual route cards and a map, participants then strode to their first venue of the day where

they played six hands of bridge in a group of 12. There being no time to waste, as soon as play had finished the café directors were whipping people off to their next venue where they played another six hands with a different group of players. The logistical challenge of getting 84 players to move between five different venues to a tight timetable without bumping into one another was huge - and impressively executed. The latest technology allowed players to record the scores using their smart ‘phones and the BriAn app and results for all players were instantly updated throughout the day. Lunch was taken at one of the venues after the third venue and at the end of

play everybody gathered at All Bar One for drinks, thanks, the drawing of the raffle, and presentation of prizes to (1st) Mike Nailard and Ian Nicholson, (2nd) Kathryn Growchoska and Ann Adkin. Other venues where Bridge was played were Dino’s, Pitcher and Piano, and Jamie’s. There was a real buzz in the air and all agreed that Tony Brook had pulled together a very successful team to run the day. There were a few gasps and spontaneous applause when it was announced that Rainbows Children’s Hospice has benefitted to the tune of £1,500. And the message? Bridge is fun.

Law firm named in list of highest uk achievers for national charity campaign last year.

A LAW firm with offices in Newark, Southwell and Mansfield has raised more than £10,000 for charity this year after taking part in a will-writing campaign, making them the 4th top fundraiser for Will Aid in the UK.

Elizabeth Rees from the Mansfield office said: “Our team has thoroughly enjoyed participating in Will Aid and have worked very hard to deliver top-quality Wills for our clients, while also raising money for Will Aid.

Tallents Solicitors took part in the annual Will Aid scheme which asks firms of solicitors to write wills for local people and instead, ask only for a voluntary donation.

“We are very happy to donate our time towards Will Aid. It is a great way of generating a link with new clients. We would definitely recommend that other law firms get involved.” The team at Tallents Solicitors wrote dozens of wills during the month of November, generously giving their time for free for the whole month.

This year the staff redoubled their efforts and raised an impressive £10,410 in the month-long fundraiser, making them the 4th highest fundraiser in the UK. Taking into account the other three years that the firm has taken part in Will Aid, their total raised to date for the charity is an impressive £23,889. Their efforts in 2017 made them one of the top five donating firms to take part in the scheme

Record-breaking figures at Palace Theatre The past year has been heralded as the best ever for attendance at Mansfield’s Palace Theatre. Attendance increased from 100,047 to 101,278 over the last two years to break the previous record of 100,443, set in 2005/06. The average attendance has also increased from 73% to 75% of each show sold. Coun Dave Saunders, portfolio holder for regeneration and growth at Mansfield District Council, said: “I am delighted to see our Palace Theatre has had its best ever year for attendance, which demonstrates the hard work and commitment by all staff and management. “I congratulate everyone involved, wish

them continued success and thank all of the customers for their continued support.” The theatre said a change to a more customer-focused approach to marketing had helped. Digital marketing now plays a key role, while also acknowledging more traditional methods of communication for older customers. Coun Saunders added: “There is a varied programme of events, together with excellent marketing of shows, that has contributed to the increase in audience numbers — a result not matched by all theatres in such difficult times.” The venue was recently awarded a platin-

um customer service award by the town’s Business Improvement District (BID) for striving towards providing excellent and outstanding service to visitors to Mansfield town centre. To see what shows are on at the theatre, go to www.mansfieldpalace.co.uk

Crohn’s Disease - Everything you need to know Crohn’s Disease has been in the media just recently due to the fact that the famous Magician Dynamo has been talking about having Crohn’s Disease, having suffered with it since he was 14 years old. His steroid medication has caused him to gain weight and this has had an impact on his magic.

WHAT IS CROHNS DISEASE AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Chron’s is a type of inflammatory bowel disorder (IDB) and can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, unlike other conditions such as colitis which tends to be detected in only one area. The actual cause of this IBD is relatively unknown, but it is thought to be due to a combination of factors such as environmental, a genetic predisposition to having the disease, immunity issues and bacterial factors in the gut. Smokers are twice as likely to develop Crohns disease as non smokers and it’s a disease that is less common in Asia and Africa; it is much more prevalent in the developed world. Crohns often starts in the Teens and Twenties, but can occur at any age. Males and females are equally affected.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPOMS OF CROHNS?

Some people often present with lower right sided pain, which is often accompanied with Diarrhoea and blood can be present in the stool. Flatulence and bloating can often be experienced. Unlike Ulcerative Colitis, defecation in Crohns disease can often be identified because of the porridge like appearance, whereas with ulcerative colitis the stools are often identified because the appearance is more mucus like. With Crohns, fevers are common and weight loss can be severe. HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

The diagnosis of Crohn’s can be tricky, there are a number of tests to try and

determine the diagnosis. A colonoscopy can be administered, which is around 70% effective in diagnosing the disease. Because Crohns can be found in the entire gastric tract the colonoscopy is limited, so radiologic tests, such as CT or MRI scans, can be part of the diagnostic procedure. MRIs in particular are more sensitive in detecting ulceration and inflammation compared to a CT scan. Blood tests are done which can detect anaemia, a common side effect of Crohns. HOW CAN YOU MANAGE THE DISEASE?

Because there is no cure for Crohns disease, individuals may experience flare ups and remission periods. When in remission, it is a good idea to try not to relapse. Medication and lifestyle changes and adjustments should be considered, such as changing your diet and eating habits. There is a need to reduce stress and include moderate exercise when you feel you can. Surgery for Crohns is generally seen as contraindicated, because it can occur anywhere in the gastric tract, if one area was taken away it might flare up in another area. As mentioned above, certain changes must

be made to prevent relapse. Make sure you increase your fibre and fruit intake and increase fluids, especially water based drinks, as you need to keep hydrated at all times. Keeping a food diary can help to ensure that you keep to foods that nourish the body and avoid one’s you identify as triggers. Some people may find they have certain food intolerances and may want to be checked for this, as eliminating foods such as these can prevent a flare up. Medication is used to treat the infection and to reduce the inflammation, but unfortunately prolonged use of certain drugs such as steroids can have side-effects that in turn can give setbacks in recovery. In a flare up, blood loss is common and this in turn leads to anaemia, so iron tablets may be given to increase iron levels. Unfortunately the fatigue suffered by the anaemia may still be evident as the absorption of iron through the gut is reduced because of the infection and inflammation. WHAT’S THE OUTCOME.

Although Crohns is a chronic condition often characterised with flare ups then remission. It is important with medication, to find alternatives to support you. Gentle exercise is suggested, when you can and stopping smoking and keeping hydrated. Diet and eating well and eliminating foods that might cause a flare up must be considered. If you feel you might suffer food intolerance, get it tested. I provide in house food testing that can identify a food that may be contributing to flare-ups. I also provide comprehensive stool testing that will look at a whole range of markers that the NHS cannot, such as moulds, pathogens, parasites, tumour markers and so on. If you are interested in taking your health into your own hands and would like to have a comprehensive food intolerance test or stool test done, please get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

Are you suffering from Insomnia? Having a sleepless night can be so disruptive to our lives, it alters our immune system and we feel generally lethargic. Sleep is as essential to us as food, air and water and researchers have also shown that after people sleep, they tend to retain information and perform better on memory tasks. Our bodies all require long periods of sleep in order to restore and rejuvenate, to grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones. Many people have difficulty sleeping and anyone can suffer from insomnia, although it is more common among women (especially menopausal), the elderly, smokers, and alcoholics. Sleep problems are, however, surprisingly common among young people. While it is not an illness and is not life-threatening, insomnia can be very distressing, frustrating, exhausting, depressing and at worst it can make you feel like you're going crazy. Common Symptoms If you ... •are tired during the day •have frequent headaches, are irritable or lack concentration

•are tired and not refreshed on waking •sleep better away from home •take longer than 30-40 minutes to fall asleep •wake repeatedly during the night •wake far too early and are unable to get back to sleep •only get to sleep with the aid of sleeping pills or alcohol ... then you are probably suffering from insomnia. What can you do about insomnia? A great deal. The good news about insomnia is that you can help yourself - in your own way, in your own time and at your own pace. However you must be prepared to make some changes in your lifestyle in order to sleep better. Here are a number of other suggestions •stick to a regular schedule go to bed and get up at the same time •exercise – but not too late in the day •avoid caffeine and nicotine •avoid alcohol before you go to bed •avoid large meals before you go to bed •if possible avoid medication that will delay or disrupt your sleep

•avoid napping during the day •relax mentally and physically for an hour before bedtime •have a warm bath, do some yoga or take a light walk before turning in •make a list of the things on your mind then forget about them •have a relaxing gadget free bedroom •replace negative thoughts with positive ones e.g. "I am going to sleep" Hypnotherapy is one of the finest ways to beat insomnia. Suggestions are given for well-being and confidence and also help you to relax and be comfortable. We have several therapy treatments we can use to help our clients and part of the treatment we offer is to give our clients a relaxation CD to listen to when they are in bed, this helps to calm the body and mind together promoting a comfortable sleep. New faces at the Wrens Rainworth MWFC have named their new managers to succeed departing boss Craig Denton, who has stepped down following the end of the season. The new manager is Ben Marvin, whose most recent job was first team coach at National League Guiseley. Ben brings as his number two a familiar face to Wrens fans in Paul Rockley, who until departing to take up a coaching role at Evo-Stik League Premier Division Coalville Town, was a member of Denton’s coaching staff at Rainworth. Marvin worked at Guiseley and, prior to that, at Barrow and Torquay United, under former Mansfield manager Paul Cox, as head of opposition analysis and first team coach. His earlier career saw him as first team coach at then Evo-Stik League club Eastwood Town, and U18 assistant manager, tactical scout and head of performance

New manager, Ben Marvin

analysis at Mansfield. Now he is eager to establish himself as a number one, in the same way that Craig Denton has done with Rainworth this season. Denton’s departure has been brought about by the club’s heartbreaking decision to step down to a more affordable level, and the club wish him and his staff well wherever their next move takes them. The pattern is the same, an eager young manager given his first taste of life in the hot seat with the hope of a similar level of success. Rockley needs no introduction to Rainworth supporters. He moved on from the Wrens in October to take up the position of head coach of the development squad and stand-in first team coach, after first joining Rainworth under Julian Watts’ managership in 2016. He had earlier taken coaching and assistant manager roles at Eastwood Community and Clipstone. The new management duo are well aware of the much tighter budgetary constraints that will be in place next season, and while Rainworth still await news from the FA as into which league they will be allocated, the aim will be a mixture of youth and senior players. Marvin said: “I am delighted to have been appointed manager of Rainworth Miners’ Welfare Football Club. After speaking to chairman Les Lee and the board, the club’s long term goals become clear. “Even though the club will be stepping down from the Northern Counties East Football League it is being done with a vision of building a sustainable, ambitious model inclusive of the local community. “I have brought in Paul Rockley as my assistant manager, who has fantastic knowledge of this level. I believe this, coupled with my most recent experience as first team coach at National League clubs Guiseley and Barrow over the past three

years will give us the tools to begin the process of building Rainworth into a progressive and competitive community club. “I look forward to everyone joining us during the coming season as we strive to begin reclimbing the football ladder in a sustainable manner, and can’t wait to get started.”
