Council provides grants to improve home heating Newark & Sherwood District Council currently has grant funding available to help local residents on low incomes to repair or replace inadequate heating systems.

If you or someone you know is on a low income and suffering with a long term health condition made worse by living in a cold home, the council may be able to help thanks to the Warm Homes on Prescription scheme.

Last year Newark & Sherwood District Council supported more than 30 home owners (and two tenants renting from private landlords), to make their home warmer, potentially avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions due to cold-related illnesses.

My old back boiler broke down last Christmas. I couldn’t afford to repair or replace it and I was getting a bit depressed with the situation so phoned the Council – they were brilliant. I’ve now got a new gas boiler and my home is toasty and warm again!”

A Newark resident who recently benefitted from the scheme said:

If you would like to know more about the Warm Homes on Prescription scheme, contact Newark & Sherwood District Council on 01636 650000.

“I suffer with mobility problems so spend a lot of time at home and feel the cold.

Campaign to save free Tv licences for over 75s Jerry Hague, Labour candidate for Sherwood has called for people in Sherwood to respond to the BBC’s consultation on free TV licences for over 75s to protect older people living on their own. Jerry said “ Thousands of older people in Sherwood are at risk of losing their free TV licences under this consultation. There are 6,900 households with someone aged 75 or over in Sherwood and if free TV licences are means tested 5,630 will lose their licences. If the age threshold is raised to 80 then 2,830 local pensioners in Sherwood will lose their TV licences.

Free TV licences are an important tool in the battle against loneliness and social isolation. Four in 10 older people say the television is their main source of company. Christmas was a particularly bad time for loneliness and analysis by Age UK found that almost a million (873,000) pensioners wouldn’t have seen or heard from anyone over the festive period.” “It will be a terrible blow to older people who already struggle to make ends meet and particularly to those who are housebound or isolated and rely on their TV for company.

As part of the last BBC charter the Government devolved responsibility for the free TV licence policy, and the cost, to the BBC. The BBC can decide what to do with the benefit from 2020 and they are currently consulting on a number of options including scrapping the free TV licence concession altogether, raising the eligible age to 80 and means testing it, for example by linking it to pension credit. “ You can respond to the consultation at : https://www.bbc.com/yoursay/consultation. pdf

Ravenshead C of E Primary School Happy New Year to you all ! We are all rested and ready to get stuck into 2019. Here are some of the amazing things we have been up to already this term:

Year 6 It has been a busy start to 2019 for Year 6 but they have all risen to the challenge. The children have been studying the “Just So Stories” by Rudyard Kipling. They produced some incredible story books and story boards which were in child friendly vocabulary and suitable for our KS1. So far in Maths the children have covered a range of challenges and activities using coordinates in all four quadrants. They certainly enjoyed the emoji task! Year 5 Year 5's new topic this term is 'Live 'n' Deadly', where they will be looking at living creatures and deadly diseases! During the first week back, they created some amazing new creatures. They had to make sure they adapted their animals to survive in harsh environments such as the desert, arctic and rainforest. The children's ideas were fantastic and we look forward to developing these throughout the rest of the term. Year 4 Year 4 have been looking at the ‘Heroes and Villains’ of Ancient Greece; exploring a range of myths and introducing themselves to some rather spectacular mythical creatures. After finding out about Medusa, the children designed their own unique mythical creature– all very terrifying! The children will soon be entering into the myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece with the help of Partake Theatre Company. The children can not wait for this adventure! Year 3 The children in Year 3 have had a wonderful time learning all about the Vikings. The children have been designing Viking

settlements, making Viking shields, grinding corn to make flour, making Hack silver bracelets and taking part in a drama performance which involved lots of shouting and brandishing of swords! They all had lots of fun and they are looking forward to exploring their topic throughout this term.

Year 2 Year 2 have loved learning about their new topic ‘Africa’ They kick started the topic finding out what animals live in Africa and what the surroundings are like for those animals. They even used photos and videos to pretend they were on their own African Safari! In a couple of weeks, the children are taking part in an African drumming workshop to learn the music the tribal masters play – they are very excited!

Year 1 Year 1 have had an exciting but challenging start to their new topic 'Our World and Beyond'. This term, they are looking at fairy tales so they set themselves a challenge to build fairy tale house out of just straws and plasticine! Although it was tricky at times, they kept their Growth Mindset and didn't give up! Year 1 enjoyed the challenge so much that they asked for the resources to go into their tough tub as part of their continuous provision so that they could have another go!

Foundation Well, it was a very exciting start to the new year. The children came to school to find a crime had been committed. Humpty Dumpty was broken all over the floor…was he pushed or did he fall? They had to become investigators; collecting evidence, finding clues and recording information to give to the local police. We even used magnifying glasses to study the evidence. At the end of the week, the police collected our evidence and phoned to tell us to check a special book for the answer. The crime was solved, but only because we were so helpful!

Mansfield Town Football Club This term, we have teamed up with Mansfield Town Football Club and every class has enjoyed a spectacular morning of football training in preparation for their sponsored penalty shoot-out. It is clear we have some budding Harry Kane’s and Steph Houghton’s within the school! As you can see it's been a great start back, here's to an incredible 2019.

Join the decluttering movement and donate pre-loved items to the british heart foundation Been inspired by Marie Kondo’s decluttering philosophy? But don’t know what to do with pre-loved items that no longer truly spark joy? The British Heart Foundation is encouraging those having a clear-out to donate quality items help them raise vital funds for life-saving research.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has said it’s seen a rise in shop donations this month following the hit Netflix show, ‘Tidying up with Marie Kondo’. It’s now urging more people to join the movement. In the hit Netflix show, Marie Kondo, a world-renowned tidying expert shares her innovative ‘KonMari’ method for clearing out clutter, encouraging her clients to choose joy, in a series of inspiring home makeovers. Although the exact reasons for the rise in BHF donations is unclear, the UK’s biggest

charity retailer believes the programme has had an impact on its recent increase in stock, adding that its shops are the perfect “sustainable solution” for people inspired to declutter their homes. The BHF says the reaction to the show is reflective of a growing awareness of sustainability issues among its supporters, many of whom are motivated to donate their quality items to avoid them ending up in landfill.

The spike in shops donations also coincides with the charity’s Bag it. Beat it. campaign in which the BHF challenges the nation to donate their pre-loved items or challenge their friends, family and colleagues to have a declutter. With 750 clothing and furniture shops nationwide, the BHF are always happy to receive good quality unwanted items – such

as clothing, shoes, toys and books, as well as larger furniture and homewares. Donating to BHF shops couldn’t be easier – donors can simply visit their nearest shop or take advantage of the BHF’s free collection service. Alternatively, you can now also donate unwanted furniture and electrical items through any Alexa-enabled device. Last year, BHF shops turned unwanted items into £30 million that could be spent on research to improve the lives of those 7 million people across the UK struggling every day with heart and circulatory diseases – whilst saving 70,000 tonnes of items from ending up on landfill. To find your nearest BHF shop or to arrange a free collection please visit www.bhf.org.uk/shop

Yale makes home security simple We all know that keeping our home secure is important. But it can sometimes feel overwhelming to know where to start, and what steps should you take in order to deter burglars effectively?

In October, the Office for National Statistics revealed that burglaries in England and Wales for the 12 months to June 2018 stood at 432,267 – a 2% rise on the previous year. Other research* has also stated 8% of burglary victims feel so traumatised by their experience that they moved home. To avoid the financial and emotional hardship caused by domestic burglary, investing in security solutions from a reliable and trusted brand is a must. An effective security system will deter potential intruders and give you peace of mind.

us

uccess by e area.

.co.uk raphs or ncluded.

With such a dizzying array of home security products available, it can be difficult to know where to start. That's why the experts at Yale have launched an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the latest security standards and how a number of simple, cost-effective steps can make a real difference in keeping your home secure. Locks to talk about The first line of defence in home protection is effective locks on all external doors. Always look for the Kitemark symbol on the front of your lock cylinders – this will tell you that the lock has passed all necessary tests by the British Standards Institution. For external doors made of wood, a mortice lock and night-latch that meets British Standard BS3621 is the ideal solution. For PVCu or composite doors, an upgrade to a British Standard Kitemark TS007 euro profile cylinder is suggested for maximum protection. For smart locks (locks that use fobs, cards,

or Bluetooth via smartphone apps rather than keys), look for the new British Standard Kitemark TS621:2018 rating. The Yale Conexis L1 is the first ever smart lock to receive such a rating, meaning that it adheres to the highest levels of mechanical and electronic security. Keep 'out of sight' in mind

Leaving your expensive possessions on display for all the world to see can be an invitation to burglars looking to cash-in. Computers, jewellery, and money are all commonly stolen items, so take the time to move them away from prying eyes. For added peace of mind, a safe bolted to a concrete floor or supporting wall can provide an extra layer of security for those valuable items. Burglars are increasingly using letterbox 'fishing' as a way to steal items that are nearby such as keys, mobiles phones, or wallets. By placing a wire, or even their arms, through a letterbox, thieves are able to grab items quickly and quietly. A letterbox restrictor is a perfect guard against this kind of intruder. A guard over the traditional letterbox lets letters and parcels in, without giving burglars an opportunity to get things out. Go steady on social With the rise in social media, it's become tempting to post up your whereabouts whenever you're on holiday or even just out for the night. However, this information is gold for potential burglars who can see exactly when your house will be unoccupied. To be on the safe side, consider waiting until your return from any holidays or breaks before posting photos online. It's also worth reviewing your privacy settings on social media – a profile that is public can be seen by anyone in your local area, including

potential burglars.

Smile for the camera A survey carried out in 2017** asked former burglars what they considered to be the most effective deterrent against intrusion. At the top of the list was external CCTV cameras on the property. Fortunately, the cost of a domestic CCTV set-up has reduced drastically in the last few years. A full system, such as the Yale Smart Home CCTV HD, costs around the same as a tablet or mobile phone and can be installed with minimal disruption. With these simple steps from the Yale experts, you can ensure that your family, home, and possessions are totally safe and secure. If you'd like more information and tips on to stop home intruders in their tracks, or simply for details on the range of Yale security solutions, visit www.yale. co.uk. *Churchill Insurance **Co-op Insurance

MP welcomes new railcard for 16-17 year olds LOCAL Member of Parliament, Mark Spencer, has welcomed the Government’s decision to create a new, half price railcard for 16-17 year olds. The railcard will give 16-17 year olds 50 per cent off all rail fares from September this year, including season tickets and peak services. This has been launched in conjunction with a new 26-30 railcard, which will cut rail

fares by a third for 26 to 30 year olds. Discussing the move, MP Mark Spencer, who has been campaigning for the Robin Hood rail line to be extended through Sherwood, said he thinks the railcard will be a “really positive step with helping young people from across Sherwood with their travel costs.” “For young people and families from Sherwood that travel by train regularly,

these cards could end up saving families hundreds of pounds.” “If you or someone you know is interested to find out more about the new railcard, feel free to drop me an email at mark. spencer.mp@parliament.uk. Equally, if you wanted to keep up to date on my campaign to get the Robin Hood Line extended, feel free to subscribe to my newsletter at www. markspencer.org.”

Abbey Gates Primary School news Tantalising Tasting The taste buds of Year 5 were tantalised recently when they had an amazing time sampling Mexican food. The idea was to discover the types of food that the ancient Mayan’s ate. The delicious delicacies were expertly prepared for the children by Mr Rich, his mum and his godfather (all of who are experts on the topic). One of the children told us that it had been a taste sensation! What an amazing way to spend an afternoon! By Erin A right Royal Visit Excitement filled the classroom on Friday the 11th of January when the year one children prepared for a very special visitor. The children spent the morning making beautiful bunting, baking scrumptious jam tarts, creating artistic portraits and learning the famous national anthem. After break, a surprise was waiting for them when the ‘queen’ walked into their classroom! All of the children agreed that they had a magnificent time meeting the ‘queen’. By Daisy Amazing Athletics We would like to say a big thank you to our Abbey Gates Athletics team, some of who stood in at the last minute, we are very proud of you. On Wednesday the 16th of January the Abbey Gates Athletics team travelled to Joseph Whitaker School to compete in a tough athletics tournament. The team performed extremely well, trying their best and coming fifth out of several schools. All of the Abbey Gates participants tried their hardest, well done. By Jude

Here comes the fire engine On Tuesday 8th of January, foundation had a visit from a fire engine! All the children had the chance to have a go at sitting in the driver seat. They all had so much fun. The children were delighted and shocked when the ruby red fire engine set off the sirens – it was really loud. The children say it was an exciting and extraordinary experience. By Ella

Blidworth & District Historical and Heritage Society

In August 2019 the Blidworth & District Historical and Heritage Society is beginning its 9th year in existence and we have come a long-long way in that time. Our society began life in 2009 when a few imaginative people met together in the Blidworth Library and soon after this the monthly meetings began. The newly formed group soon outgrew the library as a venue for its meetings, and consequently in January 2010, the members decided to hold their monthly meetings inside the Blidworth Welfare. The first Annual General Meeting was held there on March 2nd 2010. The members were very grateful to the welfare for allowing the use of this facility, but on occasions the area allocated became unsuitable, especially when a football match was being screened and the atmosphere understandably became a little rowdy. Will Richards became the Honorary President and indeed it was unanimously accepted that with his experience, his knowledge and not to mention his ability to hold an audience with his enthusiasm, meant that Will Richards became indispensable in this role. For almost the next five years, thanks to Will and Jean Richards, the society then met at the Blidworth Methodist Church and a meeting format became firmly established, that pretty much, continues to the present day. During these years under the exceptional Chairmanship of, firstly Bill Hutton, and later, John Smallwood, with Will Richards as the Honorary President and Eric Hall firmly established as the treasurer and 'speaker finder', the membership grew significantly. Unfortunately, after his health began to deteriorate, on January 4th 2013, Will Richards sadly passed away at the age 96. Early in 2015, the Society began meeting

in the Blidworth Welfare Function Room, and this you might say, has now become our home. We are extremely grateful to the Welfare Management for the continued use of this facility. We believe that our Local History Society is amongst the most successful in Nottinghamshire and this is often confirmed by our guest speakers. Our main speakers and their subjects for 2019 are as follows; February 5th LilyAnn Daws; A Cabinet of Curiosity March 5th Steve Wright; Beautiful Britain April 2nd David Amos; Bi-Centenary of Mansfield / Pinxton railway May 7th Bob Massey; Gone but not Forgotten June 4th Peter Hammond; Joseph Wooley diary of a Frame knitter July 2nd Peter Liddle; How TV Time Team programme works August 6th Antony Poulton Smith; Talking Butts September 3rd David Crook; The Robin Hood legend October 1st Chris Weir; Nottinghamshire Heritage November 5th Ian Morgan; Footpads, Kings and Highwaymen December 3rd will be our Members Christmas meeting.

of the Blidworth Welfare. Doors are open at 6.45 pm and ample parking is available. New members are always welcome; just turn up on the night. There is a small charge on the door of £2 to cover refreshments. Our very popular publication, 'Blidworth and the First World War' can be purchased at a cost of £10 from the Blidworth Library Tel. 01623677200, or from 'Salon 68', 68a Kirklington Road, Rainworth Tel. 01623795511 or simply contact us via our website or Email ‘blidworthhistory@virginmedia.com’

Anyone is more than welcome to join us at our meetings. If any of the above subjects sound appealing, if you are interested in local history, want to know more about the village, or, should you simply be curious about who we are, then why not pay us a visit, listen to what we do with absolutely no pressure. Our meetings are in the Function Room

A group of local business experts have launched a new free series of business seminars aimed at helping guide local business owners and directors through the four key stages of their life-cycle, including start-up, growth, expansion and eventually succession planning and exit strategies. Finding the time to attend seminars has become more and more difficult as we try to squeeze more into our working day. But taking time to step back and take in the ‘big picture’ is imperative for businesses to grow and thrive. Tammy Butler, from Hopkins Solicitors, says: “It’s easy to get wrapped up in our everyday operational tasks and firefighting, and forget to ensure you are not only planning ahead for the future, but checking that you have all your current business aspects, that you’ve worked so hard to achieve, set up correctly and secure. “We have collaborated with a group of local business experts to create a series of seminars that will have relevant information with a quick strong impact for

the attendees.” These seminars have been set up to include short 15 minute snippets of advice on topics that are relevant to a business based on the current life-cycle stage they are in. Richard Hampshire from Hampshire Hill Financial Advisors says, “We have always run seminars to advise business owners on how to best invest their business profits, but we wanted to expand this offering and include other important aspects such as legal and accounting advice. We feel this new series will significantly help business owners obtain an overview of the topics they need to be addressing based on the stage they are in, and to start preparing them for the next stage.” Currently there are seven local businesses experts involved, including Hampshire Hill Financial Advisors, Hopkins Solicitors, Stopfords Accounting, D2N2 growth Hub, Barclays, Invest in Ashfield and Mansfield District Council. As the upcoming seminars are scheduled that list is expected to significantly expand. Deputy Mayor Mick Barton said “The

council supports businesses to develop and grow in Mansfield and provide good employment opportunities for local people. Our dedicated business support team can provide information on grants, starting up and growing your businesses. This new schedule of events is a great opportunity to access professional services and support”. Seminars scheduled in 2019: Chapter 2: Managing the growing pains of your success (Spring 2019) Chapter 3: Expanding through mergers and acquisitions (Summer 2019) Chapter 4: Succession planning and your exit strategy (Fall 2019) It will take place at The Oakham Suite, 155 Nottingham Road, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire NG18 4AE. Free onsite parking is available. To Reserve a Space: Seminars are free to attend but space is limited. To secure a space email marketing@hopkins-solicitors. co.uk or visit https://www.hopkinssolicitors.co.uk/about-hopkins/ business-seminars/

Huge weight loss an ispiration to others for me. By the time I was 15, I weighed 16 stone. I found it incredibly difficult trying to control my eating and being cruelly mocked in school exacerbated the issue. Aged 20, my doctor told me I weighed 25 stone and that I wouldn’t live to see my 30th birthday — I knew I needed to change my life.”

A personal trainer who was told he wouldn’t live to be 30 is celebrating a transformative 13-stone weight loss. Jordan Martinez (23) is maintaining his weight loss through regular exercise, including the fat-burning classes he teaches at Mansfield’s i-Jump trampoline park. Jordan, who leads a range of fitness sessions for children and adults, said: “Being overweight at a young age was devastating

After joining a weight loss club, Jordan learnt which foods were good to eat and through his own research understood how to exercise properly. As part of his exercise regime, Jordan enjoyed going to the gym and began teaching health classes at i-Jump. “I’m ecstatic to have lost 13 stone since my weight loss journey began a year ago,” he said. “My confidence has sky-rocketed and my relentless hard work has achieved life-changing results, which I want to use to help encourage other people to do the same.”

Stephi Grayson, operations manager at i-Jump, added: “We’ve seen a big rise in the popularity of our classes in the past year and Jordan is a real inspiration to everyone who meets him. We have extended our offering by running numerous classes to cover all ages and abilities.” i-Jump trampoline park offers various classes including i-Tots for children under five, i-Keep fit for adults, and family jump together sessions. Bilsthorpe Garden Club On Wednesday evening, 16th January, twenty-six Members enjoyed a New Year Dinner & Social Evening at “The Fox” Kelham, organised by Chairman, Dennis Lewin, to whom a well-deserved vote-of-thanks was given by Member, Alan Ashley. During the course of the evening, Members tackled an absolutely fiendish Cryptic Quiz, devised by Vice-chairman, Ian Roberts and won by Suzanne Cooling. Afterwards, a

special free Raffle, arranged by Jenny and Steve Smart, was drawn, with the first prizewinner being Brian Newman.

THE HISTORY OF THE CHESTERFIELD CANAL was the subject of the talk at our January meeting by JOHN LOWER who has been a volunteer with the Chesterfield Canal Trust since 1981. The Trust owns 32 miles of the canal from the Trent at West Stockwith to Kiveton

tic volunteers and see the before and after photographs. It was an excellent power point presentation by John Lower which was very much enjoyed by members and visitors.

Our next Meeting will be an illustrated talk on “Winter Colour” by Marie Purdy on Wednesday evening, 20th February at 7.30 pm in the Lounge at Bilsthorpe Welfare and new Members are most welcome.

Farnsfield Local History Society

The Canal was designed by James Brindley and work started in 1771, completed in 1777, carrying mainly coal but also stone, corn, lime, lead, timber and iron. The stone that was used to rebuild the Houses of Parliament after the 1834 fire was quarried at North Anston and taken by canal from West Stockwith to the Trent and from there to the Humber down the east coast to the Thames. Our members were amazed at the work the Trust has done since the Chesterfield Canal Society was formed to promote restoration in 1976. In 1989 20 miles of canal from Worksop to Chesterfield were derelict and since then 12 miles have been restored along with 37 locks, 11 major road bridges and 2 marinas, one at Shireoaks. A new terminal basin is under construction at the Chesterfield Waterside complex. Other future restoration work is threatened by the proposed route of HS2 so that promised funding is withheld until that is determined. Members were amazed to learn about all the work hat has been done by enthusias-

The next meeting is on Wednesday 13th February when Michael Harrison will speak about the History of Coal Mining in Nottinghamshire. As usual the venue is the Lower Hall of Farnsfield Village Centre, New Hill at 7.30. Visitors always welcome £3. Our A.G.M. will be on the 13th March when new members will be welcome to join. After the A.G.M. Graham Hayes' talk will be on the Lost Houses of Nottinghamshire

A busy year ahead for Sam’s Workplace Well we’ve definitely hit the ground running again here at Sam’s Workplace. We enjoyed a good rest over the Christmas period and are looking forward to another fantastic year of working with our lovely young adults and serving our fabulous customers! If you don’t already know of Sam’s Workplace we are based at 37 Preston Road in Rainworth (the road opposite Joseph Whitaker School). We are a community cafe and sweet shop offering work experience placements to adults with a learning disability. Our service is unique!! We also run a workshop offering arts and crafts, as well as an allotment in Blidworth where we run a seed to table project as well as some small animal care. We are always keen to include independent learning skills in whatever we do, as well as travel training for our guys. So lots to keep us occupied!!! Plans for this year include ….. our usual Valentine’s Day gifts and cakes, Easter treats, Mother’s and Father’s Day gifts, along with many other food treats too numerous to mention!! All the gifts are made by our learners, all of whom have a learning disability, within our workshop above the shop on Preston Road. Each piece is unique and certainly has a lot of love and commitment put into it. We are busy already this year promoting

the work of Sam’s Workplace; we have a stall booked at Portland College’s moving on event, as well as Bracken Hill Special School’s Information, Advice & Guidance event. We work with a lot of specialist schools and colleges who place their students with us for their work experience.

So if you haven’t already found us, then please do! We have loads going on, and still have our bacon cobs at only £1 … what have you got to lose? We are also putting on different activities on our Saturdays …. so much to do!!

We are looking to purchase an ice cream machine which I am sure we will have LOADS of fun with! Special thanks go to Freemasons Fund and Charles Littlewood Hill Trust for their generous financial assistance with this purchase.

Hope to see you soon, from all the guys at Sam’s Workplace xxx https://www.facebook.com/samsworkplace1/ 01623 797240

One of her former foster children, Polly, now 33, remembers vividly her first visit to Lesley’s home. “She made me feel so at ease and welcome, and asked me very quickly how I’d like my bedroom doing up before my next visit,” said Polly, who now lives with her partner, her partner’s daughter, and her own two daughters in Hucknall.

During the years she fostered Polly, Lesley maintained good relations with Polly’s birth parents.

Find out about fostering at special information event Information sessions about fostering with Nottinghamshire County Council are being held in February.

Among the county’s foster parents is Lesley, 57, of Mansfield, who has fostered with the council for 24 years. Until eight years ago she was a single foster carer of mainly teenagers, but now fosters with her husband, Keith. They currently look after a young person over the age of 18, who is remaining with the couple beyond his ‘foster placement’, and a 17-year-old boy.

“Lesley and I went shopping for bedding and other bits for my room and we clicked straight away. I felt comfortable and a sense of belonging from day one.” Lesley openly admits that she sees Polly as the daughter she never had.

“I never had any children of my own and I must admit fostering at first seemed like an alien experience, but I quickly grew to love it,” says Lesley.

“We just slotted into each other lives and we have been there for each other at important times,” Lesley said.

“I wanted to bring children into my home and make sure they felt like part of the family, not just visitors.”

Polly also holds precious memories of Lesley helping her move into her first flat when she moved out aged 19.

Lesley explained: “I was Polly’s foster carer and she lived with me but it was important that she knew where she came from and had a sense of family and belonging.” Lesley has fostered more than 50 young people and tries to keep in regular touch with all of them. She is supporting the council’s fostering campaign and urges anyone who has been thinking about fostering to take a closer look. There is a drop-in session on Thursday, 14th February, from 3pm–5pm at Mansfield Woodhouse Library. To find out more about fostering, go to www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/fostering

The science behind the food: 3 packed lunches that are proven to keep you warm this winter A new report by RIFT tax refunds has revealed the foods and ingredients which are scientifically proven to keep you warm through the winter. Millions of Brits call the great outdoors their office, and, with the MET office predicting the winter of 2019 to be of a similar scale to the ‘beast from the east’ 1. RIFT has conducted research into what food the UK workforce can eat to sustain heat within their bodies through the working day.

1.The slow release winter warmer Keep warm this winter with a portion of oatmeal. It’s a great thermogenic food perfect for the colder months because it’s filled with phytochemicals and nutrients that release energy slowly throughout the day to keep your body warm. Beef is great when you find yourself in chilly conditions because it is a fantastic source of iron, which is crucial for producing red blood cells and circulating your blood. The high calorie and fat content found in beef makes it the perfect fuel for your body, and the ideal meat to keep you warm in winter. Partner with wholemeal bread and make it a sandwich; high-fibre carbohydrates raise your metabolism, which in turn heats up your body. Finish off with a slice of ginger cake to complete

the perfect packed lunch. Ginger enhances the thermogenic benefits of the rest of your meal and helps blood circulation in our bodies making it a great source of warmth. And a delicious snack!

2.The heart-racing half-time meal A hearty portion of leek and potato soup can do wonders for you, providing enough energy to keep you warm all day. That’s because leeks are rich in antioxidants and vitamins that help your heart pump blood around the body more quickly, preventing coldness to your limbs, keeping you warmer. On the flip side, potatoes are a complex carbohydrate, and so require high amounts of energy to break down. Because your body is working hard to digest your food, your body heat rises. Speeding up your metabolism is a great way to warm your body, and eggs are great for this. Adding a small scotch egg to your packed lunch could not only raise your metabolism, but the vitamin B12 found in the egg assists in red blood cell formation and breaks down body fat. Cinnamon possesses plenty of warming properties, so think about introducing it into your lunch with a delicious cinnamon bun. The spice improves metabolism and particularly helps those with poor blood circulation, ultimately keeping your vital organs warm and preventing you from feeling a chill.

Finish off your lunchtime with a cup of tea, adding a spoonful of honey for a warming touch; not only does it give your brew a sweetness, but it is great for raising your metabolism to protect you from chills. If you can’t get your mitts around a fresh, hot cuppa, brew a batch for your Thermos before you leave. 3.Spice up your midday break Start off your perfect packed lunch with a handful of dried fruit. Rich in nutrients and minerals, dry fruit combats anaemia (deficiency of red blood cells or haemoglobin) and is best served in small portions, so your body can efficiently absorb the goodness. A warming curry can be the perfect cure for a winter chill. You feel your body temperature rise after spicy food because capsaicin, found in chilli peppers, bolsters your metabolic rate and increases the enzymes that metabolise fat. For the rice, it is important to choose brown or wholemeal because these are complex carbohydrates that take longer to break down. Because your body is working harder to digest your food, your body heat rises, meaning you’ll be warmer for longer.

Like chalk and cheese There are certain wines and foods that delight the taste buds when mixed. Wine seeks relationships with the finer ingredients in life, yet many have a tough time making a sound partnership with cheese. In fact, some cheeses can make a good red wine dull and lifeless.

If you love to end a special meal with a cheese platter, balance the flavours of your wines and cheeses carefully. The stronger the cheese, the more intense its partner should be. But remember that balance isn't about matching like with like, it can be as different as chalk and cheese. Soft touch Soft, creamy cheeses such as brie and camembert coat the palate with a layer of soluble fat, masking tastes. Even if you are drinking an excellent red, you will loose some of its flavour. Team soft, creamy cheeses with extra-dry champagne and the effervescence will clean the fats from the palate. Pungent cheeses and reds If you must be awkward and insist on red with your cheese platter, choose a concentrated, rich red such as Amarone della Valpolicella. This Ital-

ian dry red is made from air-dried grapes and can stand up to the most pungent cheeses including Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino. A cheaper alternative is Ripasso di Valpolicella made in the same region.

Port and cheese A perfect partner at any restaurant or at a dinner party is port and creamy blue cheese. A non-vintage port is a perfect partner for creamy stilton, while vintage port pairs beautifully with feisty cheeses such as gorgonzola. Epcurious.com wine expert Anthony Dias Blue says, "(Port has) an element known as rancio - a desirable, rich, oxidised quality, which meshes reliably with the luxurious flavours of such mould-laced cheeses." Sweet whites for cheese When serving a sumptuous cheese platter at a dinner party, remove the reds and opt for a fruity, vibrant white to complement your range of cheese. Sweet, spicy and fruity German wines such as gewürztraminers and rieslings are good all-rounders. For blueveined cheeses, choose a sweet dessert wine. These will also work well if you are also serving

desserts at the table. This article was downloaded from http://www. freefeatures.com.

Labour candidate learns about work of Life Skills education charity Jerry Hague, Labour candidate for Sherwood, was pleased to learn about the Life Skills education charity which has helped hundreds of young people in Sherwood, after meeting the Chief Executive Officer Peter Moyes and Richard Lord a trustee of the charity. The charity, based in Nottingham, runs a programme called D.A.R.E in schools on drug and life skills education to help young children lead safe and healthy lives and achieve their potential. Life Skills has worked with schools for 21 years and provides resources using evidence from up to date research following government guidelines.

Jerry added "As with all public health issues, early advice and intervention is the most effective preventative measure to prevent the individual from suffering harm and being placed in a vulnerable situation and in the long term this also saves the community from the consequences both social and financial. I would certainly recommend the D.A.R.E. programme to any school that has not yet used it".

Jerry said, " it was really encouraging to hear about the important work the Life Skills charity carries out and I am grateful to Peter and Richard for taking the time to explain the D.A.R.E. programme that they provide in schools which has benefited young children throughout Sherwood. Aggregate Industries adds natural curb appeal to £5m Sherwood Forest visitor centre

Aggregate Industries’ innovative and highly-durable coloured asphalt solution has added the finishing touches to a new visitor centre at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve in Nottinghamshire - an area famous for its role in the Robin Hood legend. Opened at the end of August, the stunning new £5m visitor complex in Edwinstowe will provide vital information on the area’s rich wildlife and woodland as well information on the Robin Hood legend to the 350,000 people who visit the popular nature reserve each year. The project, developed by an RSPB-led consortium, together with Nottinghamshire County Council, includes flagship facilities such as a shop, a café with an outside terrace, an amphitheatre as well as a play area for children.

Given its status as one of country’s bestknown landmarks, it was important for the design and build of the visitor centre to enhance the area’s natural surroundings as much as possible. As such, one of the key requirements for contractors Woodhead Construction and R.N Surfacing when it came to surfacing the drop off point for visitor coaches, was sourcing asphalt to complement the resin bond golden gravel used on the rest of the site. Cue Aggregate Industries SuperColour Ultra, a range of distinctly coloured asphalts, which uses a translucent penetration grade, resinous hydrocarbon binder. The special binder is readily pigmented and provides a wide range of asphalt colours. Using its recently-opened SuperColour sampling lab at the company’s Express Asphalt plant in Doncaster, Aggregate Industries created two samples to R.N Surfacing in natural and buff. After testing out the samples to ensure they met the right specification and performance, the contractor eventually opted for the natural colour. Overall, Aggregate Industries supplied 60 tonnes

of SuperColour Ultra in natural, which unsurprisingly achieved truly impressive results and led to one happy client. Victoria Smith, general manager of Express Asphalt at Aggregate Industries, said: “As an area of outstanding beauty, it was important for the new visitor centre at Sherwood Forest Country Park to be in keeping with the natural surroundings, including the materials used for landscaping and surfacing. With a selection of high performance asphalt materials at our disposal, including different colours and performance properties, we’re delighted our bespoke SuperColour Ultra succeeded in achieving the naturally appealing look and superior performance the client was after.”

delivering a first class service throughout - by providing us with bespoke samples of their natural coloured asphalts, we were able to practically test out and decide on the best possible solution to help us meet the client’s unique aesthetic brief.” Aggregate Industries’ marketing-leading SuperColour asphalt range boasts a wide choice of coloured asphalt surfaces, including reds, greens and yellows, all designed to harmonise with site surroundings. For further information about Aggregate Industries, visit www.aggregate.com .

Amy Stamford, Quantity Surveyor at Woodhead Group Said: “Due to the high profile nature of this project, it was vital for us to work with a supplier offering innovative asphalt solutions, with extensive colour and performance capabilities. I’d like to thank Aggregate Industries for

Sherwood to become ‘Trailblazer region’ for Children’s mental health SHERWOOD’S MP, Mark Spencer, has welcomed the news that is to become one of 25 ‘trailblazer’ regions to trial new mental health services aimed at children and young people. The Government has chosen 25 regions across the United Kingdom to trial a new approach to improving mental health for youngsters. The pilot project, which is provided jointly by the Department for Health and Social

Care and the Department for Education will see schools having a designated mental health lead, additional training for mental health support teams, as well as additional funding. Mr Spencer, who has been lobbying the health secretary for better mental health support in Sherwood, said: “This is great news for schools across Sherwood. I’ve been pushing the Health Secretary for improvements to mental health services locally, so

I’m incredibly pleased to see that that has paid off and Sherwood has been chosen as a trailblazer region.” “This new approach will see young people’s mental health given the focus and attention it deserves, and I’m proud that we can play a part in that.” To find out more about the new trailblazer schemes, contact Mark Spencer directly at mark.spencer.mp@parliament.uk

The Facts - Dry Eye Disease Prof. Harminder S Dua and Ms. Dalia G Said

The surface of the eye is constantly bathed in tear fluid, which keeps it moist and provides the final optical polish to the cornea, the transparent window in front of the eye, which allows light to pass into the eye and helps to focus it on the retina. The tear fluid is made of three components – water, mucin and oil, which come from different glands on and around the eye. Deficiency or absence of any of these can cause disruption of the tear film and manifest as ‘dry eye disease (DED)’. Several conditions can cause DED. Post- menopausal women, patients with rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogren’s syndrome; those who are on certain long-term medication such as antidepressants, eye infections and corneal surgery are at risk of DED. The eyes feel dry, gritty, sore, and vision

can be affected. Treatment involves finding and eliminating any associated cause where possible, conserving naturally formed tears by inserting plugs in the tear drainage tubes (punctal plugs), treating inflammation with appropriate medication and instillation of artificial tear drops. There are a wide range of tear drops available but not all of them will suit everyone. For advanced cases of DED, complex interventions may be required. Often one can control DED and attain relief from the symptoms but a permanent cure is usually not possible. The gallbladder is an organ that we all have and probably don’t know much about, until something goes wrong. When you do have signs and symptoms of gallbladder dysfunction you’ll certainly know about it. The gallbladder is a small sac-like structure, which releases bile through ducts into the small intestine. It is part of the body’s Biliary system and it can be found in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, just below the liver. Its main function is to store the bile that helps to break down and digest any fats that we eat. Billiary colic, is the term given to the episodes of the pain experienced with gallbladder issues. The gallbladder doesn’t often cause any problems, but when it’s inflamed it causes great pain. The usual cause of this pain is gallstones which are quite common. The bouts can be severe when the gallstones block the flow of bile into the small intestine. These gallstones cause a pain which is felt in the upper right hand side of our ribcage. They vary in size and are made up of substances found in the bile along with cholesterol and a pigment called bilirubin. When Cholecystitis, gallbladder inflammation, is diagnosed, the most common cause is gallstones and if the gallbladder itself becomes inflamed by intestinal bacteria, this may lead to its rupture and surgery is performed to remove it. Most gallbladder symptoms will start with pain in the upper right or middle abdominal area. However, other symptoms

may also present themselves, such as: •Abdominal pain lasting for hours. •Pain extending to the right shoulder blade or back. •Pain worsening after eating fatty food or a heavy meal. •Heartburn, indigestion and gas. •Vomiting, nausea and chest pains. •Fever or chills with the shakes. •Light-coloured clay-like stools and dark urine. Gallstones can be treated in several ways: •If the symptoms persist, and are severe, surgery to remove the gallbladder via keyhole surgery will often be suggested. This is known as a Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, where small cuts made to the abdomen help the surgeon to view the operation on a monitor whilst using a laparoscope. The gallbladder will then be removed using special surgical instruments. •ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is a procedure used to remove the gallstones but not the gallbladder. A flexible tube is passed down the mouth to where the bile ducts can be found, these are then widened and the stones are removed or left to pass naturally through the body. •On rare occasions medication to dissolve gallstones may be given, but are not always the treatment of choice because they are rarely effective. Most people continue normal lives when they’ve had their gallbladder removed, although some people can suffer with bouts of constipation and therefore a healthy

diet is very important to ensure that you eliminate regularly and lessen the chances of the gallstones returning. In summary, in order to reduce the chance of developing gallstones, it is recommended that people should adopt a healthy diet, with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, take regular exercise and do not smoke. Sport Relegation battle looms 32

First of all, my apologies for the lack of an article on Rainworth MWFC last month – I’m glad to say that we are now back up and running. During my enforced absence which covered Christmas and the New Year, there is no hiding the fact that results have not really fulfilled the promise brought about after the change of management led to some encouraging wins and performances early in the new regime, and the Wrens still find themselves looking over their shoulders at the relegation battle which is going on just behind them. November had brought two wins, one draw and two defeats, which had looked to lift them clear of the drop zone, while the December fixtures leading up to Christmas saw two more wins, one draw, one abandoned match with the scores level, and one defeat, that one by 1-0 at home to Ashby Ivanhoe on the Saturday before Christmas. The East Midlands Counties League does not do Boxing Day or New Year fixtures, but the Wrens went into their home game on 29th seven points clear of next to bottom Borrowash Victoria, who were the visitors.

Beeley Hawley Chartered Accountants

Pre-Christmas results had Lewis Saxby’s men anticipating stretching that advantage to 10, but it all began to go downhill when pacey winger Liam Jepson was sent off early on for a rash challenge which earned the youngster a three-game ban. Until then the Wrens had been on top, but it was the Vics who grabbed the lead before Will Spray headed an equaliser from a corner just before half time. Spray had the ball in the net again early in the second half but that was disallowed, before the Vics raced into a 3-1 lead. This was not going to plan at all, but with eight minutes of the 90 remaining Josh Asuman threw the Wrens a life line. Asuman was then injured as he almost equalised right at the end of the 90, and with all subs already used it meant Rainworth had to play stoppage time with only nine men. But just when the game looked lost Ethan Wiesztort beat the Vics keeper with a sublime chip to equalise, and then right at the death it was ecstasy then agony as Rainworth thought they had scored the winner, only for it to be disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper. So 3-3 it was, and there was no faulting the heart which produced that fightback against the odds. The first fixture of 2019 saw the very short journey to high-riding Sherwood Colliery, and a super-human display by keeper Andy Francis restricted the Wood to one 63rd minute goal. Rainworth had their chances too, and twice went very close, but just could not put the ball in the net. And it was pretty much the same story the following Saturday, 12th at home to Kimberley, when once again the 63rd minute saw the visitors score the only goal of the game. A midweek trip to Shepshed to play the previously abandoned match against in-form Ingles saw Ethan Wiesztort’s goal keep the Wrens level at 1-1 at half

time, but the Leicestershire side added two more unanswered goals in the second half. Meanwhile, the three clubs below the Wrens in the league table had started picking up points, pulling Rainworth right back into the dogfight against relegation. A daunting task at home to leaders Newark Flowserve was postponed, leaving two outstanding January games as I write, at home to Barrow Town on 26th, and away to Newark in the League Cup on the following Tuesday. February fixtures are: 2nd, Belper United (h); 9th, Eastwood (a); 16th, Heanor Town (a) and 23rd, Selston (h), which looks like another daunting month. Do come on down to the Tomlin Personnel Stadium and get behind the Wrens as they look to resume their climb up the table.

Rainworth MWFC were saddened to announce the passing of their longest serving member during December. Brian ‘Nip’ Martin died at the age of 80, having been involved with the club for 60 years during which time he served as player, trainer, treasurer and head groundsman. The esteem in which Brian was held throughout local non-league football was reflected in the huge numbers who attended his funeral. Brian will be irreplaceable at the club, and the club will be the poorer for his passing.
