The high street still appears to be a cold place for shoppers with footfall continuing to decline during November. That’s what the overall figures from the latest BRC-Springboard Footfall and Vacancies Monitor stated, as footfall fell by 3.8% on the high street alone. Retail parks and shopping centres equally suffered with declines of 1.4% and 3.8% respectively. The downturn proved to be what the industry was expecting; especially in a month that sees the online promotion ‘Black Friday’ take centre stage. It’s best not to read into this data too much as the busy festive period is now upon us – which is hopefully going to buck the trend of the last few months. The evidence of this has already emerged with the last week of November experiencing an uplift in shopper numbers taking to the high street. Despite the overall monthly figure being down, on a weekon-week comparison, footfall rose by 1.3%, with all three destinations recording an uptick by 1.4% on the high street, 0.5% at retail parks and 1.7% at shopping centres. This indicates that perhaps a positive period is beginning for retailers, and with late-night shopping — added with the visual surroundings of Christmas lights up and down town centres — the outlook ahead of Christmas remains optimistic. The view of ‘creating an atmosphere’ could be the key in luring shoppers into physical destinations. Retailers that also look to kit out their stores for the festive period may benefit from the season of goodwill further.

Creating an atmosphere is also key when exhibiting at shows and, with AIS and JFS around the corner, businesses up and down the country are adding final touches to their long-planned stands. This week’s editorial features a first look at both upcoming shows that are looking to start 2019 with a continued sense of optimism. It is an exciting time when a show approaches as it gives businesses involved a strong platform to show off all projects they have been working hard on. With that in mind, this week also features the latest developments from Hydeline, GFA, La-Z-Boy and Sofahouse ahead of the January Furniture Show, as well as an insight from testing house SATRA, who are celebrating a century of testing. To round off the issue, Land of Beds’ Mike Murray shares his views on product packaging, further highlighting how as an industry that is keen to be more sustainable in its practices, perhaps attention should now turn to environmentally-friendly packaging operations. If you have any views on this topic, don’t hesitate to get in touch or if there is anything else you wish to share, the floor is open to hear your voice.

Shares fall at boxed mattress business Shares in boxed mattress brand eve Sleep declined on 6 December after the retailer said it had secured subscribers for £9.9m worth of new shares, significantly lower than the previously announced £15m fundraising plan last month. eve Sleep shares were trading down around 20% at 11.75 pence each on that Thursday evening, according to the London Stock Exchange. Woodford Investment Management Ltd has indicated that it intends to subscribe for up to £8m of new ordinary shares of 0.1p each in the capital of the company at a price of 10p per share, whilst Paul Pindar, chairman, has indicated that he intends to subscribe for approximately £1m of new shares. James Sturrock, CEO, has indicated that he intends to subscribe for approximately £20k of new shares, while Channel 4, which provides advertising services to the company, has indicated that will take £0.9m of new shares. On 15 November 2018 eve Sleep announced its intention to raise approximately £15m of new equity. Since then, the company has been in discussions with existing and potential new investors to secure new funding. Eve added that it has also received other indications of potential interest from existing and new investors, and remains in discussion with a number of other potential investors. These conversations ‘will remain ongoing whilst the company undertakes the Whitewash process’. The business further added an update on trading, stating that it continues to perform strongly with a ‘very good Black Friday period’. Unaudited revenues for the 11 months to 30 November 2018 were approximately £33m and, therefore, the company continues to anticipate that it will deliver revenues above market expectations for the year end 31 December 2018. Commenting, James Sturrock, CEO of eve Sleep, said: “Whilst the fundraise is not yet completed and is subject to a short delay, the Board remains confident of delivering the investment from existing, new and potentially strategic investors which is required to deliver the business strategy. We look forward to putting the business on a stronger footing with a view to establishing eve as a leading sleep and well-being brand.”

Upholstery retailer looks to the future following loss

BED MAKER LAUNCHES NEW CHILDREN’S RANGE

Upholstered furniture retailer Sofa.com has reported rising losses as turnover remained static. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 28 February 2018, total sales stood at £28.8m. Gross profit also experienced a decline of 3% to £15.8m from £16.3m, whilst pre-tax profit losses widened to £40.9m from a loss of £19.9m the previous year. Stated within its report, Sofa.com said that trading had been impacted by the ‘uncertain market conditions’, which resulted in an impairment loss of £23m on tangible assets and £3.8m on fixed assets in exceptional charges during the year. During the year, the retailer opened one new showroom in Guildford as well as three pop-up stores, whilst also cementing a concession partnership with House of Fraser. To date, this partnership has seen the launch of eight concessions with plans to develop this further. Sofa.com also confirmed that it plans to refine its product range and develop new fabrics.

FOAM SUPPLIER GROWS UK SALES Belgium-based international polyurethane foam manufacturer Recticel SA has reported a growth in UK sales, although profits fell into the red. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 December 2017, total UK sales rose 10.3% to £133.8m from £121.2m in 2016. Gross profit fell 21.8% to £19.7m from £25.2m, whilst its pretax profit of £9.5m recorded last year experienced a significant decline to a loss of £2.3m. Stated within its report, the business had made one-off costs of £7.4m in relation to claims from customers, associated costs and costs arising from a supplier issue, as well as another oneoff cost of £940,000 relating to claims against another supplier. Recticel added that turnover increased in both its Flexible Foam and Insulation businesses, whilst raw material costs led to an expected decline in gross profit margin. During the year the company was one of many suppliers across Europe that was impacted from chemical producer BASF’s announcement indicating that, between 25 August 2017 and 29 September 2017, polluted toluene diisocyanate (TDI) – more particularly Lupranate T80 A – was supplied to its customers from its plant in Ludwigshafen.

Bed manufacturer Silentnight has launched its Healthy Growth mattress range, designed to aid children’s development through a great night’s sleep. To support the launch, the company has commissioned research with the University of Sheffield and the University of Leeds to consider the effect of bedtime routines for children aged between six and 11 years-old. It is the first major UK study to characterise children’s sleep habits. Healthy Growth, by Silentnight, is foam free and chemical treatment free, and is said to be the mattress you can trust to give your child the very best start in life. The new collection adds to the company’s range of eco-friendly mattresses. Silentnight’s Eco Comfort fibres™ that are made from recycled plastic bottles, ensure a refreshing and healthy night’s sleep that are great for the environment too. There are a number of factors which can result in poor sleep for children, including technology. Silentnight’s study found that simply having tech devices in the bedroom can impact sleep. Using technology an hour before bed can lead to a sleep debt of 121 hours a year for children as young as six, while 60 per cent of those in this age group who don’t use technology before bedtime are getting around 20 minutes extra sleep a night. On average, children slept 60 minutes less if technology devices were in the room, compared to those who slept in a tech-free zone. Steve Freeman, managing director of Silentnight, said: “As part of our commitment to a better night’s sleep for all the family, we have launched the Healthy Growth range for children. “Using our latest technologies, we’ve developed a range of mattresses, which we’re certain will help children to enjoy a comfortable and refreshing night’s sleep.”

FIRA INTERNATIONAL UNVEIL BRAND NEW LOOK

FIRA International has a new identity

For No.1 comfort at night…

FIRA International has unveiled its new brand identity, following the acquisition of the business by Element Materials Technology (Element) last year. This announcement coincides with significant investment into furniture testing capacity within FIRA International’s UKAS accredited facilities in Stevenage. The new look for FIRA International now complements that of the wider Element business, bringing the organisation closer to its parent company identity. Commenting on the rebrand, Phil Reynolds, general manager at FIRA International, said: “Since the Element acquisition we’ve been working very closely behind-the-scenes to successfully integrate our business. “It has been critical for us to do this in a way that enables FIRA International to benefit from further investment to ensure that we continue to be in a position to meet the needs of all our customers, whether this be for furniture testing, consultancy or inspection and repair services. “Within the testing business, last month we opened our newlyexpanded flammability laboratory, which has doubled our capacity. Previous to this, additional equipment was installed for structural testing and further expansion in this area will continue into 2019. “We’re very excited about the new look for FIRA International and, more importantly, the benefits it will bring to our customers. “The more distinctive look will also help us to differentiate between the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) and FIRA International. FIRA will retain its current purple branding and logo, and FIRA International will continue to be the service provider to the Research Association.” FIRA International’s product and installation certification programme, FIRA Gold, also has a new look, while the technical requirements of the scheme remain unchanged. The same applies to the FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award, which has also undergone a refresh. FIRA International also confirmed that the introduction of its new brand identity does not affect the validity of existing test reports, assessments or certificates previously issued, and customers can continue to use these documents as before. Anyone from across the furniture industry, who wishes to see first-hand the new look at FIRA International and the results of the expansion programme, is invited to attend an open day being held at the UKAS-accredited facilities in Hertfordshire on 21 February, 2019.

In a statement to Cabinet Maker, a spokesperson for the business said: “The management team at Godfrey Syrett has been exploring different options to secure the future of the business and the high-quality service it provides to its customer base. “However, significant changes are required if the business is to survive and prosper in the future. Shopper numbers still worrying retailers High street footfall continued to fall during November, marking a fourth consecutive month of decline. According to the latest BRC-Springboard Footfall and Vacancies Monitor for November 2018, overall footfall fell by 3.2%. High street footfall declined 3.8%, a significant fall on October’s decline of 2.3%. This was the largest decline since April 2018, when it fell by 4%. Northern Ireland was the only region to see growth of 4.1%, a small increase on the previous month of 4.0%. The East Midlands and the South East suffered the deepest declines in this location, falling by 6.5% and 6% respectively, making this the sixth month of consecutive decline for both regions. Retail parks experienced a decline of 1.4% in November, down on last year, when footfall increased by 0.5%. Shopping centres saw a continued fall in footfall of 3.8%, a deeper decrease than the 3.3% decline of last month. November 2018 is now the 20th month of consecutive decline. Overall, Northern Ireland sustained its growth of 2.7%, similar to the previous month, and was, for the second consecutive month, the only region to show growth. The East, South East and East Midlands experienced the deepest declines of 5.6%, 4.8% and 4.7%, respectively. Helen Dickinson OBE, chief-executive BRC, said: “Footfall continued to decline as consumers stayed away from the high street in November. With one-in-every-three-pounds of non-food purchases made online last month, Black Friday accelerated the movement from in-store to online in the lead up to Christmas.”

Retail sales at seven-month low

FURNITURE MAKER CONFIRMS FACTORY MOVE

UK retail sales rose in November although the figure was at its lowest rate in seven months.

Cabinet manufacturer and teak specialist Nathan Furniture has moved all its furniture production to a new factory in Indonesia.

According to the latest BRC - KPMG Retail Sales Monitor November 2018, total sales increased by 0.5% year-on-year, with like-for-like sales down by 0-.5%.

Nathan has been working with Danwood in Semarang since 2008, including the production of its entire Shades range since 2011. It opted to move all manufacturing to the facility and now has its own dedicated unit at the facility, across the road from the main plant.

Non-food retail sales were flat at 0.0% over a three-month average. Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive, BRC, said: “November 2018 cemented Black Friday as an increasingly digital event, with a record one-in-every-three-pounds of non-food purchases made online during the month. Black Friday week itself was bigger than last year, but did little to lift the overall pace of spending, with sales growth in November falling to its lowest rate in seven months. “Weak consumer demand and falling confidence mean that retailers are in for a nerve-wracking run up to Christmas. Conditions in the industry have been particularly tough since the vote to leave the EU in 2016 and the current uncertainty has only compounded the challenges. Unless the UK can secure Parliamentary agreement for a post-Brexit deal that ensures frictionless, tariff-free trade, consumers are likely to face higher prices and less choice.”

Former furniture store owner fined Failure to develop a former prominent Accrington building has resulted in the owner being fined in court. Former Barnes Furniture store owner and now property developer, Sharaz Manzur, was found guilty of failure to comply with a section 215 notice, requiring him to carry out works to the property on Church Street in Accrington. Mr Manzur has planning permission to turn the building into flats, but Hyndburn Borough Council took him to court after he failed to progress in satisfying the planning conditions, and it issued a notice requiring him to carry out repairs. Repairs included replacing damaged rendering, replacing windows and repairing the roof. Mr Manzur failed to carry out the repairs and was found guilty in court and ordered to pay £569, as well as facing further fines of £100-per-day for every day the work required remains incomplete. Council leader, Councillor Miles Parkinson, said: “This former Barnes Furniture Store is a prominent building in Accrington and we have given the owner many chances to improve it, but when he failed to do so the Council had no choice but to take legal action. “We will continue to do our utmost to get the owner to bring this property up to standard.” The property was home to Barnes Furniture for 30 years until it closed down in 2005.

w www.hyndburnbc.gov.uk 14th December 2018 | 14

Nathan managing director Nicholas Radford said the move has helped lead times and reliability, as well as increasing the quality finishes and range of products it can now offer. Nicholas explained: “Consolidating all of our production to a single, extraordinarily well-run factory has improved several parts of the business. One of the unique features for a Far Eastern factory is the level of staff training and mentoring, which goes alongside the physical investments. “In the UK we were constantly trying to find ways of reducing materials and labour to keep the costs down, now we are doing the reverse and the product we are producing has never been better. “And that’s a key thing about this — it’s not about producing the furniture cheaply, rather the combination of factors such as the state-of-the-art machinery and highly-skilled workforce that allows us to do more with the pieces and build to a higher specification. “It has also enabled us to increase our ranges and the variety of style finishes. Now we need to educate our customers of what is possible and give them the confidence that Nathan can do things they may not have historically associated with our traditional brand. “Quality has always been our biggest priority. Previously, to keep quality high we’ve had to work on finishing items in the UK after they’d arrived from different factories. “One example is cabinet doors, which were prone to twisting and warping. It’s a problem that has now been engineered out by using RF (radio frequency) Presses to laminate the styles and then over-veneering. To the consumer there is no difference in the look, but doors constructed like this will be far stronger and more durable. The cost of doing in this in the UK would not have been possible.” Nathan Classic was designed nearly 50 years ago, but with the improved CNC (computer numerical control) machinery and production techniques, it’s revolutionised the way doors are made. They are still made to the same design with four individual matching veneered panels in every door from the same flitch. However, the engineering improvements allows Nathan to produce small batches almost to order, instead of larger runs to make it more economical. Nicholas added: “This wasn’t a knee-jerk move for us — we’ve been working with the factory since 2008. We’ve had various pieces and ranges made elsewhere, but we’ve always found the quality and consistency from Danwood to be excellent. “We’ve always insisted on using the best materials possible, and as the best teak is grown in south east Asia, and in particular Indonesia from sustainable plantations, it makes sense to use a factory based there.”

Mobility specialist praised

HELPING SMES SUPPORT DISABLED WORKERS Together with its EU partners, the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) is going one step further to help companies within the furniture sector who employ disabled workers. The aim of the SupportAbility project is to train managers across SMEs and provide them with the knowledge of adaptations that may be needed when supporting an employee with a form of disability. Last week was the pilot course and the first test of this E-learning project. After two years of research and collation of the course, it was found that activities that lead to inclusion are currently supported and encouraged due to a range of national and international policy developments. This includes an underpinning policy and strategy adopted by the United Nations. A picture emerged that while activities are taking place and commitments are real, much more needs to be done if the aims of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities are to be achieved. Barriers to employment still need to be eliminated.

Carl Drake and Simon Weston Harrogate-based mobility company Rise Furniture and Mobility has been named ‘Most Outstanding Mobility Retailer in North Yorkshire for 2018.’ The mobility business has also been highly commended for ‘Best Customer Service’ at the British Healthcare Trades Awards, at Alton Towers Hotel and Spa in Staffordshire, held last month. Falklands veteran Simon Weston CBE presented Carl Drake, managing director, with the Highly Commended Best Service award at the UK healthcare’s annual glittering awards ceremony. Earlier this year, the Harrogate mobility retailer was crowned National Retail Business of the Year, the first and only mobility company, ever to win the prestigious award. Commenting on its success, Carl said: “This has been a remarkable year and we’re extremely proud our hard work has been recognised.”

INDUSTRY EVENT EXPANDS MATTRESS PRODUCTION Furniture industry event interzum has further expanded its offering with a new Innovation hub.

However, SMEs can find including people living with disability a particular challenge due to a lack of information, resources and infrastructure to give the very specific help they may require over and above the broad generic community values provided in an SME environment. From these findings, SupportAbility has created a pilot course coordinated between six partners and students from Spain and managers from the UK furniture industry (BFM members) who participated. The pilot course, which consists of activities that lead to the inclusion of people living with physical disability, learning difficulties and people with a history of mental illness, was held in mid-November, with a second week in February 2019 to review, conclude and make recommendations. Between these on-site courses an e-learning platform has been created to teach participants the fundamentals needed when employing those with a form of disability over four modules, with a test relating to each. Among the students attending the November pilot course were six British employees from companies in the furniture industry, including Hypnos and WEBS Training, along with six carpentry/ furniture students from areas across Spain. The pilot course has also become an accredited course by OAL, which means each participant will be presented with a certificate on successful completion of the SupportAbility pilot. One of the tasks during the pilot course was asking the group to think of one word to define the process in its entirety, and the word that was presented was equality. This was a testament to the hard work that each partner has put in from the UK, Spain, Turkey and Portugal. The basis of the course is to remind employees about equality, to teach this to the entire workforce, and to learn how to support every employee with any adaptation necessary, whether it be physical or emotional.

The subject of the production of machinery and components for mattress manufacturing is expanding out of Hall 9 into Hall 10.1.

On the success of the ongoing pilot course, Jackie Bazeley, representative of BFM in the project, said, “The course has been both exciting and thought provoking for the students, enabling them to really understand the difficulties disabled individuals have to overcome in the workplace.”

This underlines the important, thematic linking function played by Hall 10.1. The concept is topped off by the cutting and sewing areas in Hall 10.1.

Any company that intends to have a strong, happy workforce should consider asking their managers to enrol on the SupportAbility course.

Inspire a young designer The Furniture Makers’ Company has launched a Christmas fundraising campaign and is asking for the entire furnishing industry to sponsor a School Design Prize, giving the gift of inspiration to a design student this festive season. The School Design Prize was launched in 2014 to raise awareness of the furnishing industry among school children. The prizes are posted to schools around the country with a certificate for design & technology teachers to present to their most outstanding student. All of the winners of the School Design Prize are then put forward to a national competition and invited to exhibit at the annual Young Furniture Makers exhibition in October. This year the charity has a target to give 700 prizes to 350 schools around the UK. For a donation of just £50 (+ VAT), the charity will send a school two prizes to reward an outstanding male and female. Hayden Davies, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “The government’s focus on growing the economy and raising productivity by increasing the number of people studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has meant a reduction in funding for the arts and fewer students being directed toward designs & technology. For less than a festive evening out, you can help young people learn more about our dynamic industry by sponsoring a School Design Prize.”

Property group unveils store acquisition cost

MANUFACTURER WINS SAFETY AWARD

Property group Panther Securities PLC has revealed the cost behind the purchase of both Palmers stores. Detailed in its latest trading update, Panther acquired both Palmers Department Stores property freeholds in Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft for sums of £1.5m and £850,000 respectively. In a statement, Panther said: “These properties meet the group’s criteria in that there is good short-term income and substantial property value, and we feel that in the medium to long-term we can realise strong growth via potential alternative uses. Since we completed our purchases, Beales have taken assignment on both leases. “Beales were previously in discussions with Palmers, but broke off discussions when the management buyout of Beales was being arranged and picked up these discussions again at a later stage and completed the assignment. “We believe that the assignment is beneficial for the Panther group as we obtained better security, plus there is a likelihood that Beales will aim to trade from these premises for more than the existing lease term.” Furthermore, Panther also confirmed the acquisition of another property freehold of the Debenhams Department Store in Dumfries for a sum of £1.1m.

BUSINESS COMPLETES PRE-PARK SALE Joint Administrators Howard Smith and David Costley-Wood from KPMG have completed the pre-pack sale of contract furniture business Pure CF Limited in a deal that has saved 87 jobs. The Stone-based Company supplied contract furniture to the hospitality and leisure industry in the UK and exported its products to the USA and Middle East. Joint administrators were appointed on 13 November 2018 after the business suffered from unsustainable cashflow problems due to ongoing challenges in the casual dining and wider hospitality sector. Upon appointment, the administrators immediately facilitated a pre-pack sale of business and assets of the company to Pure Contract Furniture. The sale saw all 87 staff employed by the company transfer to the purchaser. It will continue to operate out of its site in Stone, Staffordshire. Howard Smith, joint administrator and associate partner at KPMG, said: “Following consultation with Pure CF, and without any other concrete offers for the business, a prepack sale presented the best option to safeguard roles and move forward. The deal will enable the business to continue trading with confidence and target new opportunities for growth.”

Boxed mattress brand founder reverts to advisory role

FESTIVE APPEAL TO HELP THOSE STRUGGLING

Three years after the founding of the mattress start-up Emma, the management board is now reshuffling. Max Laarmann, the founder and managing director, is now changing roles to become a member of the Advisory Board of the holding company, Bettzeit GmbH, from 1 December 2018. Commenting on the restructure, Max said: “The last three years have been fantastic with each year having been filled with more memorable achievements than the last. Being named one of Forbes’s 30 under 30 at the beginning of 2018, is definitely an honour that immediately springs to mind. “I’m delighted that our ideas and concepts are so well received and that we’ve clearly hit a nerve in the online mattress industry — we definitely had the right idea at the right time.” Looking towards 2019, Emma will have expanded to more than 20 countries and has effectively transitioned from a startup to a grown-up. As such, it said it was the right time to pass the baton to Dr Dennis Schmoltzi, one of the founders and managing directors of the Bettzeit GmbH. Dennis said: “I am very grateful for the invaluable work and impressive success that Max has brought us in the past three years. We managed to disrupt the mattress industry with our digital concept. Shortly after we met, it became clear that we would want to work together. The idea for the Emma mattress as a direct-to-consumer brand was born soon thereafter and was the perfect adage to the multi-brand online marketplace for mattresses that Bettzeit was running at the time.” With the change to the Advisory Board, Max Laarmann will continue to remain involved as both shareholder as well as advisor. He looks forward to his upcoming challenges: “I’m passionate about turning ideas into reality and getting businesses up and running. I’ve had a few of these ideas stuck in my head for a while now, so I’ve decided to dedicate myself to them now. I can’t thank my team enough for our time together and I remain committed to the company as a shareholder and an advisor.”

The pocket doors of Cucina Colore’s ranges for modern kitchens also incorporate living spaces, providing a furniture solution that is both functional and on trend. Mereway designer Bruce Thomas said: “Our pocket doors tap into the trend for more storage and the ability to conceal everyday items away until required, maintaining a clean uncluttered look. Home improvement retailer to focus on core markets

JFS INTRODUCE NEW CONTRACT TRAIL

The parent business of home improvement retailer Wickes has confirmed plans to ‘strengthen performance’. Travis Perkins PLC, which houses both the Wickes and Toolstation brands within its consumer division, said that it will focus its efforts on ‘capitalising’ on core product markets. A statement read: “In the short term, management will also focus on strengthening the performance of Wickes and capitalising on its clear competitive advantages in the DIY, small trade and Kitchen & Bathroom markets. “As it is a predominantly consumer focused business, the Board will also look to review the options for maximising the value of Wickes in the medium term.” Furthermore, the group added that it would divest its plumbing and heating division to facilitate ‘focused management attention and capital deployment on the higher returning areas’. The group said this forms part of its cost savings plan of around £20-£30m, which is expected to be delivered over the next 18 months. John Carter, chief executive, commented: “We have developed a clear plan to focus on delivering best-in-class service to our trade customers, and to simplify the Group to reduce complexity, speed up decision making and reduce costs. Our trade businesses hold strong positions in attractive markets, and these initiatives will enable us to concentrate our management time and capital in the highest returning areas. “Our strong balance sheet and free cash flow generation, driven by growing earnings and lower capital expenditure, will underpin our commitment to drive shareholder value and a progressive dividend.”

FITTED FURNITURE FIRM EXPANDS FOOTPRINT

Organisers of the January Furniture Show have announced the introduction of a new JFS Contract Trail. Over 150 of the 2019 exhibitors either regularly or occasionally supply contract. For the first time contract suppliers will be identified on the exhibitor listing on the JFS website before the show, making it easy for buyers to plan their stand visits in advance. Visitors will also be able to pick up a handy map to guide them round the Contract Trail when at the show. JFS organisers had noticed an increase in the number of both retail and non-retail buyers requesting information on companies who supplied contract. It was, therefore, a logical step to make that information readily available to attending buyers. Cleere Scammell, show director, said: “It is important that we give our buying visitors as much useful information as is feasible, to make their visiting time at JFS as productive as possible. Adding the Contract Trail was an easy decision given the number of requests we receive for the information — and given the large number of contract suppliers that we have among our exhibitors.” Across the board in upholstery, cabinet, beds, and accessories there are suppliers of contract exhibiting at JFS including, Buoyant, Duresta, Kingstown, Whitemeadow, Ashley Manor, Firstlight Products, Stuart Jones, The Libra Company and Silentnight.

Costs impact bottom line Tile specialist Topps Tiles has reported an uplift in full year sales despite profits slipping. According to its annual financial results for the 52 weeks ended 29 September 2018, total sales rose 2.4% to £216.9m from £211.8m in 2017.

Fitted furniture manufacturer Sheffield Kitchen Outlet has expanded its presence with the launch of two new facilities.

The group said that like-for-like sales were flat, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £12.7m, down by 25.3% from its profit of £17m recorded last year.

Sheffield Kitchen Outlet has signed a lease on a new 15,000sq ft unit on Julian Road in Sheffield, as well as branching out into Leeds with a new 3,000sq ft premises on Elland Road.

Topps said the profit reduction was due to additional costs as a result of new stores and inflationary pressures.

The business, which is based in Hillsborough and supplies fitted kitchen and bedroom furniture, sought advice from law firm Banner Jones Solicitors ahead of the expansion, which has also created 10 new jobs.

On current trading, the first eight weeks of the new financial period has seen like-for-like sales decrease by 1.9% compared to its growth of 3.2% at the same time last year.

Commenting on the growth, Stuart Hattersely, managing director of Sheffield Kitchen Outlets, said in a statement that the new facilities will ‘broaden’ the business’ reach across Yorkshire and follows on from its recent successes.

Commenting on the results, Matthew Williams, chief executive, said: “This has been an important year of strategic progress for the Topps Tiles Group, in which our expansion into commercial has seen us double our addressable market while remaining firmly within our tile specialism, where our buying scale and expertise gives us a significant competitive advantage.”

JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW

In the

ZONE

Cabinet Maker takes a first look at the upcoming January Furniture Show to find out what’s new for 2019.

It only seems like a few weeks ago the furniture industry descended upon Birmingham for the 2018 January Furniture Show (JFS). The event was labelled as another success with anticipation of what 2019 will offer firmly mounting as soon as the doors were closed. Well, the time is almost upon the industry to gather once again for another four days across the five halls of the NEC. And this year is expected to raise the bar once more, in terms of product offering and the number of pre-registered visitors already pencilling the event in their dairies, as show director Cleere Scamell reveals: “Seeing the escalation in the number of pre-registered visitors is terrific news. It proves that the word is truly out about what a great show for the industry the January Furniture Show is. “Having so many buyers eager to see what is new confirms that we have got the right exhibitors, who present the right products to enthusiastic buyers, and in a formula that works for everybody. Feedback from our exhibitors and buyers is invaluable to us. There were clear messages at the end of the 2018 show — more beds, a really good lighting offering and more space for interior furnishings. “We listened to that and want to make the show what the industry wants it to be. We firmly believe that the 2019 event will be the best yet and will deliver excellent results for our hard-working exhibitors and keen buyers.” Listen they did. As Cleere mentioned, the 2019 show will feature an expanded Beds category, taking over Hall 5, as well as a broader Lighting section, which will aim to

With the January Furniture Show around the corner, its ‘full steam ahead’ for UK importer and sales agency of leather and fabric upholstery, Global Furniture Alliance (GFA). It’s been another busy year for the business so before we jump into their 2019 plans, GFA’s managing director and owner, James Painter, shared his thoughts on what has been a successful year, but one not without its challenges. “It’s been an encouraging year where in a declining market, growth has been sustained and many new business opportunities have arisen. However, it’s been tough out there, and you have to fight for whatever business is going,” James said, continuing: “Inevitably adverse currency fluctuations will 14th December 2018 | 32

have a major impact on profits as we have held prices where we can, but by careful introduction of modest price increases and the introduction of new models this issue has not had the total impact it could have had. Knowing exactly when to buy dollars forward can, of course help, which sadly we don’t always get right!” Not only has the business had to absorb

market conditions, but also it has had to deal with the devastating loss of one its core team members in operations director Gary Fisher. James spoke highly of the late Gary, who was taken from the company and his family by a sudden stroke at the age of 48. “Gary was such a fantastic character and leader in the business. However, the resolve that everyone has shown since his death in March has been fantastic as the whole team are keen to keep

his name alive and continue his legacy of good work at GFA,” James said.

witness the growth and upward trend in our mobility chair business,” James said.

And it’s the team behind GFA that has been instrumental in its success throughout the year, with the company also ‘greatly strengthening’ its finance department with the appointment of a senior and experienced part-time financial director, supported by a strong financial supervisor, as well as continuing to adhere to its policy of internal promotion, with two admin staff being promoted to supervisor level.

“I don’t think there has been a more extensive programme of product development since we started in China 15 years ago. Regular monthly visits to our supplier source in China and Thailand have become the norm in the last six months,” James revealed, continuing: “In China there is also much support work being undertaken by our quality development/QC colleagues based there, and for many months there has been serious daily interaction between them and us.

James added: “Further investments have been made in the purchase/storage of spare parts, which enables further improvements in our after-sales service. The company also has a continuous ongoing programme of staff training and this year both in-house and external courses in health and safety and compliance regulations have been undertaken.” From the people to the products, GFA revealed that its small range of more modern-looking chairs has seen ‘a real surge in numbers’, which the business is now ‘backing hard for the January Furniture Show’. “We think the end consumer is becoming more trend orientated and we intend to give them what they are looking for, with more modern designs, new bases and vibrant colours. It’s also been very exciting to

“We are determined to present a stunning display of new and well-priced products for the January show. Our colour palette will include a boldness perhaps not previously shown.” So what does GFA have lined up for JFS? The company revealed that it will launch various new lever recliner options, lumbar supports, new neck mechanisms, new recliner locking features and functions, as well as a USB feature on a new riser.

“THE JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW IS THE ABSOLUTE STANDOUT EXHIBITION TO SHOWCASE AND INTRODUCE OUR DEVELOPMENTS INTO THE MARKET. IT’S FUN AND EXHAUSTING BUT UNMISSABLE.”

Not stopping there, GFA will also unveil a new leather lounge gallery concept, a new improved Chair Republica offer, sofa and swivel recliner sets, a new bounce back office chair type mechanism and a new accent piece range. With a plethora of new and exciting

products, the GFA stand will also receive a fresh makeover to accommodate the products being launched, as James explains: “We will reduce the reception counter to optimise display. “We also have added a display pillar, which will showcase a three-chair display on four sides. “For us, the January Furniture Show is the absolute stand-out exhibition to showcase and introduce our developments into the market. It’s a key date in the calendar that for us goes back for well over a quarter of a century. It’s fun and exhausting, but unmissable.” Preparations look well under way at GFA, with the business also offering a sneak peak at what else to expect during 2019 post JFS. James revealed: “We have a number of advanced training courses booked for certain members of the team and we are also looking at undertaking another charity event in support of the Stroke Association.

“GFA will be investing in an upgraded luxury show van that will be hitting the road in March with our network of regional sales agents. (Finally I can hear my agents saying!). And once again, we will visit many shows and

Michael Sheedy, sales manager at Hydeline, speaks to Cabinet Maker about their plans for the January Furniture Show following a year of rapid growth.

“THE NEW BRAND FEATURING INSPIRED LIFESTYLE COLLECTIONS WILL MOVE US INTO THE NEXT PHASE OF OUR DEVELOPMENT, AND WILL HELP GROW THE BUSINESS.” 14th December 2018 | 36

Hydeline, leaders in craftsmanship, comfort and innovative reclining technology, have experienced a year of continuous growth, bucking the trend of the much-used phrase ‘challenging conditions’ that has plagued the industry of late. Michael Sheedy, sales manager at Hydeline, was quick to point out that it has been another year of ‘rapid growth’ with momentum not looking to slow up any time soon. “Despite difficult trading conditions, business has been excellent this year,” revealed Michael, continuing: “Building on an increase in turnover in the region of 250% last year, we are set to double turnover this year and the target is to repeat that again in 2019. “The Hydeline brand is developing very well in the UK and Ireland. Having focused on the reclining sector to date, our power-adjustable headrests, memory functions and poweradjustable lumbar support features are setting new standards for innovation. Only Leggett and Platt mechanisms and Okin motors are used, and warranties are among the best in the market today.”

Earlier this year Michael also revealed to Cabinet Maker that the business plans to expand into continental Europe as well as teasing about a new brand launch set for 2019. That time is now upon Hydeline, with the business looking to capitalise on its success in the UK to date by introducing its new lifestyle direction, At The Helm. Michael exclusively revealed: “To be launched at both IMM Cologne and The January Furniture Show NEC in January 2019, the

brand represents an exciting new direction for the company. Featuring many of our existing models, which have been such a commercial success in the UK, the launches will also showcase many exciting new models, complemented with an eclectic lighting and occasional collection. “This will be the opening chapter in an exciting new journey that will encompass new leather and fabric collections, a continuous flow of new designs, fantastic point-of-sale materials and in-store gallery options — and all, of course, with the renowned quality, craftsmanship and comfort that you have come to expect from Hydeline.” To complement the new ranges further, Hydeline confirmed it plans to refresh its stand designs at both JFS and IMM to enable its customers to explore the products in a ‘comfortable’ setting. “A brand new and very exciting stand design at both shows will showcase the launch and we very much look forward to welcoming all our existing and, indeed, new customers to explore this new direction in comfort and style,” Michael said. “Lounge in some of the most comfortable sofas on the market, join us for a coffee, or maybe something a little stronger, and discover contemporary and inspired home collections that are sure to enhance your existing retail offering.”

Richmond “The unique quality of our business is obviously a key ingredient in our success. The new brand will move us into the next phase of our development and a continuous flow of commercially-designed models will help grow the business into the future. We are really looking forward to presenting this to new and existing customers next January.”

Showtime!

Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director, speaks to Cabinet Maker about the forthcoming AIS Furniture Show next year.

The AIS Furniture Show January 2019 Five key looks: Classic, Boutique, Scandi, Industrial and Country

Eagerly anticipated by the independent furniture sector, the AIS Furniture Show is once again set to take over Cranmore Park, offering the group’s members and the wider trade an opportunity to source exciting ranges and brands. The show will open its doors on 20-21 January, following two days of private trading reserved for AIS members. Seven years on, the event continues to develop and support the independent retail sector by welcoming buyers from across the UK and Ireland ready to experience the special environment of this buyer-focussed show. Buyers love the show’s friendly and professional setting, giving them more time on their buying strategy in a relaxed yet business-like atmosphere. The ranges on display are specifically designed and targeted for quality independent furniture retailers Running concurrently with the start of the January Furniture Show at the NEC, the AIS Show gives buyers another reason to visit Birmingham during January as the proximity of Cranmore Park in Solihull, to the NEC makes it very easy for people to visit 14th December 2018 | 38

both. Buyers that are keen to explore every opportunity often visit prior to or following a trip to the NEC. Show organiser, Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director - home, explains what buyers can expect to see: “All the suppliers exhibiting, whether they are new to the show or have exhibited previously, will be launching new products at the show. We have some exciting new suppliers in upholstery, including Koinor from Germany, and Jones & Co from Lithuania. Also exhibiting is Christian Lemieux, a new cabinet supplier to the UK. There will be some super new ranges from established upholstery favourites, including Himolla, Bardi Spa and Premier, as well as

HTL and Primevera”. He adds: “In addition to AIS exclusive ranges from Parker Knoll, G Plan and Duresta under the Ducal and Stag brands, there will also be some excellent new products from Disselkamp, Venjakob, MWA and Nathan, to name but a few!”. The January show gives AIS the opportunity to show alternative fabrics, leathers and finishes on their exclusive ranges of furniture. Peter commented: “Since joining AIS, one of the areas that has given me the greatest pleasure has been the success of developing exclusive ranges from established brands such as Parker Knoll and G Plan, giving members not just best-selling product but, more importantly, enhanced margin

opportunity”. The strategy has been replicated on cabinet furniture with ranges now being developed specifically under the Stag and Ducal brands, which are exclusive to AIS members. Brands are key to the marketing mix for today’s independent retailer as they add credibility to their offer and help drive footfall. The other area that AIS has developed has been the creation of their five key looks — Classic, Boutique, Scandi, Industrial and Country. Working closely with not only furniture suppliers to develop these looks, they have also sourced merchandise from key accessory and lighting suppliers, thereby creating a comprehensive look that leverages members against their competition. Anybody interested in joining AIS should take the opportunity to talk with one of the selectors or directors who will be in attendance at the show. Cranmore Park can be found just of the M42 within a few minutes of Birmingham International rail and air links, and the NEC. Such ease of access, together with plenty of free parking, makes The AIS Furniture Show an ideal start or end to the day.

Going

Boldly into

2019 New box mattress offering

Global recliner specialist La-Z-Boy UK is set to return to the January Furniture Show with not one but two new product categories, alongside a widely expanded upholstery selection. Cabinet Maker got the lowdown on the brand’s bold moves over the past 12 months from marketing director Mark Draper.

It is a well known principle of marketing that during uncertain economic circumstances, consumers prefer to put their trust in branded products in order to be sure of a sound investment. During what has been a year of challenges for the UK and Irish furniture industry, La-Z-Boy UK has capitalised on its global brand power to make a significant statement in the sector.

Winchester

The firm will launch an extensive selection of new upholstery ranges at the January Furniture Show, as well as displaying its new bed frame and mattress collection at the NEC for the first time, and introducing neverbefore-seen occasional and dining furniture. La-Z-Boy’s significant investments somewhat contradict overall market trends, so we caught up with UK marketing director Mark Draper to find out more about the brand’s confident moves. “Our investment in a consumer-facing multimedia advertising campaign in late 2017 came at an ideal time and we have been reaping the rewards of the brand recognition and emotive connection with consumers that it created,” he said. “The idea behind the campaign was to broaden the popularity of La-Z-Boy to a wider consumer base and showcase the diversity of our products. The launch of Urban Attitudes — our contemporary and more compact product collection with a unique 14th December 2018 | 40

hidden recline mechanism — followed a TV advertising campaign and strengthened our messages significantly by showing a fresh new direction.” The upholstery-focused TV and national press campaign was accompanied with digital display advertising, which has run continually since December 2017, and has paved the way for a successful 2018. In July, La-Z-Boy introduced its bed and mattress collection, which will be exhibited in full at the NEC. Four upholstered bed frames can be customised with any of the full selection of La-Z-Boy fabrics or leathers, and

completed with a choice of three UK-made pocket sprung mattresses. A luxury boxed mattress completes the collection, which received glowing feedback from visitors to the Manchester Furniture Show. “Our boxed mattress really stands out in the marketplace thanks to its focus on quality, as well as convenience,” Mark said. “Customers can pick up the mattress in store without needing to arrange delivery, and take home a luxury branded product with ease, making it a straightforward sell for retailers.”

Alongside this, La-Z-Boy will exhibit a variety of occasional pieces and dining furniture, brand new to the UK. Mark explained: “For the first time, consumers will be able to rely on La-Z-Boy to furnish almost every room in their home. “Our occasional tables and units complement our living room pieces and our dining furniture has been designed with our core customer base in mind. It means that our stockists can really capitalise on the La-ZBoy brand value and make the most of their in-store display areas and showrooms with a selection of products that provide upselling opportunities.” In its core upholstery category, the focus at the NEC is on Urban Attitudes and Comfort Studio, with a selection of new ranges introduced in both.

give their furniture their own style.”

“We’re really pleased with how the collection works as a whole. There’s definitely something to please a wide range of consumers and suit a cross section of retailers,” said Mark.

The La-Z-Boy UK team is hoping its new additions will continue the success of its first two years in business. In 2017 its Originals Collection surpassed all sales targets and during the past year it has received excellent repeat upholstery orders, which were again in excess of expectations.

Comfort Studio is La-Z-Boy UK’s most traditional collection, offering supreme quality and a wide range of choices on these everpopular styles.

“There’s a good mix of contemporary and traditional styles, and models with and without legs. We’ve also launched a new leather style called Dune, which has an aged effect.

Mark added: “We’re confident in both the power of our brand and the quality of our products, which makes for a winning combination. We’re really looking forward to showcasing that to retailers at the show.”

Some new chairs will also be showcased, featuring a push-back recline mechanism which is brand new to the UK, but has proved highly popular in America. All the new

Urban Attitudes introduced a bespoke recline mechanism, giving this contemporary range designed for more compact living spaces a hidden functionality on these off-the-floor products. The sensor-touch control, neatly situated between the cushion and arm, adds to the style and elegance of the products.

Modular momentum

Kevin France, Sofahouse UK managing director, Cormac Crawley, marketing manager, and new sales director, Andrew Cochrane, speak to Cabinet Maker about their latest product developments. Product development is key to the continuing success of any business — and this is no different for Sofahouse. “If you stand still in the furniture game you get overtaken very quickly so product development is at the core of everything we do at Sofahouse. New ideas, continual improvement and development is essential,” declares Sofahouse UK managing director Kevin France.

concept. “Corner models were too rigid in the past. It happened so many times that a customer loved a particular model but it just didn’t fit properly in their sitting room,” said Kevin. “The only solution back then was to find a model that did fit, but inevitably the customer didn’t like that model as much. Put simply, each model was only one size and that just didn’t work well.”

In 2018, Sofahouse achieved exceptional growth in modular sofa ranges as consumers are realising that a broader range of seating configuration is now possible. “It has been somewhat of a revolution,” continued Kevin,”and consumers have reacted so positively to modular that we wanted to explore this further, to open minds and to help retailers communicate the almost endless choices available.”

So, since 2014 Sofahouse has been working with its manufacturing partner, White Feathers Ltd, to produce some of the finest modular models in the market.

A number of years back Sofahouse recognised a deficiency in the corner model 14th December 2018 | 42

“The Urban, Dillon and Kansas models have been runaway successes for us this year,” commented Sofahouse’s new UK sales director, Andrew Cochrane. “Coupled with our newer models, Levanzo, Marconi and Stefano, we have a formidable line-up for 2019.” “It is gratifying that all the work that went into

The Urban modular model collection product development has come to fruition. We can offer so much variety. In terms of configuration, you can have a two, three or four-seater. You can add a console or two to that. You can add a corner piece to create the L-shape sofa you always wanted. You can even add a second corner piece with a couple more seats and, hey presto, you have a U shape! “You can add a chaise or motion recliner to either end, with some models even having a power motion option — the choice is entirely with the customer. Basically, if you can imagine it, we can offer it to you.” Even if you can’t imagine it, Sofahouse is creating 3D animations to give retailers and consumers more food for thought. Sofahouse marketing manager, Cormac Crawley, explains: “We want to paint a picture for end users, to show what is possible. It’s one thing talking about it and trying to imagine what any particular configuration might look like, but when you can see it unfold before your eyes it brings modular to life. “There are so many different combinations and the animation will present you with possibilities you might not even have considered. It is definitely a power marketing tool.” It’s worth taking a look at one of the 3D animations on the homepage of Sofahouse’s website — www.sofa-house.co.uk — to see for yourself. Of course, with such variety on offer, stock availability is crucial to maintain delivery times, no matter what combination is ordered. Sofahouse has more than 250,000sq ft of warehousing in the UK and Ireland, including new premises in the West Midlands, where all current models in their various combinations are held in stock, ensuring that a product is available for delivery as soon as it is ordered. In an ever competitive market, where service is crucially important, Sofahouse believe that its ability to deliver in a matter of days sets it out from

the crowd. Modular has been a revelation and Sofahouse is excited about the future direction of the business. Naturally it will be exhibiting all its newest models, as well as its best sellers, at

the January Furniture Show in Birmingham’s NEC in the new year.

Heat and flame testing on furniture and mattresses is carried out at the SATRA test facility

SATRA celebrates 100 years in business and 21 years of furniture testing. SATRA was formed in 1919 and since then has become a recognised and respected name for product research and testing in supply chains throughout the world. The organisation, which introduced furniture testing to its broad offering of technical services 21 years ago, ended 2018 on a very positive note, announcing that furniture testing numbers doubled compared with the previous year — and that there has been significant growth in chair, table and cabinet testing work and flammability testing for both the domestic and contract markets. In 2019 there will be further investment in test machines and specialist staff in the furniture department to continue SATRA’s commitment to this important product sector. 14th December 2018 | 44

Members of the furniture team will kick-off its centenary year at the January Furniture Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Geoff Bindley, SATRA furniture business manager, said: “We are looking forward to being back at the Furniture Show again, where we’ll get the chance to spend some time learning about new products on the market and the technical issues the industry is talking about.” Geoff and his team will be on hand at the SATRA stand for the full four days to discuss any aspect of furniture testing and also SATRA Diamond Product Certification, a programme designed to be a mark of quality

for suppliers and manufacturers who want to show that their products and components exhibit superior quality and performance. SATRA has an extensive, modern test facility at its headquarters in Northamptonshire with a dedicated flammability laboratory for heat and flame testing, including whole mattress testing. There is also a comprehensive chemical laboratory for restricted substances evaluation and laboratories to assess the damage caused by impact, heat and stains on veneers, granite and glass. All laboratories are UKAS accredited to ISO 17025. The chemical laboratory at SATRA receives a wide range of requests and could, for example, include a requirement to test the

LAST WORD MIKE MURRAY, MANAGING DIRECTOR LAND OF BEDS Eco-conscious consumers have begun rejecting everything from tea bags to chewing gum, following revelations that countless household items contain traces of plastic. Nine in 10 people in the UK now use ‘bags for life’ when shopping — and while this is a positive step in the right direction, it isn’t enough to tackle the estimated 12.7 million metric tonnes of plastic dumped into the ocean every year. Buoyed by heart-rending scenes in TV documentaries such as Blue Planet, more and more consumers are rethinking every single purchase, which has had the positive effect of encouraging retailers to do the same. Iceland was the first supermarket to pledge to eliminate plastic from its own brand products over the next five years; Tesco has since followed suit – committing to achieve the same goal by 2019.

“I PREDICT PLASTIC ALTERNATIVES WILL BE A GROWTH INDUSTRY THAT EXPLODES IN 2019.“

I’m proud that Land of Beds is working closely with our partners to develop environmentally-friendly products; however, 90% of mattresses are still delivered in huge plastic bags. Even bed-in-a-box options come vacuum-packed in plastic sheeting. That waste is inevitably going to end up in landfill, where it can take up to a thousand years to decompose, or among the one truckload of garbage that’s dumped into the ocean every single minute. My question is, as an industry, can we come together to find a better way to protect beds and mattresses that are in transit? Is there an eco-conscious alternative to plastic that will keep them hygienically clean without impacting on the environment? If you can buy fresh meat and get it home safely for human consumption without plastic wrapping, then surely we can do the same for mattresses, beds and pillows?

we could tackle this problem before the consumer brings it to our door; more importantly, it’s the right thing to do. As a third-generation family-run business, one of our key values is family and community, so I would like to think that our industry can help safeguard the environment for future generations. I predict plastic alternatives will be a growth industry that explodes in 2019. Already, a host of companies are getting set to unveil their sustainable, recyclable and compostable alternatives to plastic at the UK’s largest annual event for the entire packaging and supply chain — to be held in Birmingham in February. Let’s all enter the New Year with a pledge to keep our eyes and ears open to the possibilities… A new business could even emerge out of it!
