KITH : SPACES THROUGH STORYTELLING

"Kith" explores how both physical and intangible spaces connect us, revealing the hidden stories that shape our sense of belonging and identity.

POSSIBILITY

ARCHITECTURE- LIVE

PROJECT

The project designs spatial experiences at REXKL, blending interior architecture with cultural and contextual appreciation.

GLIMPSES OF KITH

All previous work is combined to re-imagine and shape narratives into spatial concepts, selecting and detailing spaces that reflect the chosen theme.

This subject is designed to give students the opportunity to combine and integrate the core design principles already embedded as part of the previous taught modules. Institutional design project will be an appropriately selected design competition, collaborative project or staff initiated design brief, which will respond to current issues and opportunities and result in a resolved design solution in response to an increasingly complex brief. Learning will be studio based and delivered via demonstration and practice with directed and independent learning. Assessment is through a portfolio of 2D and 3D design work.

PHASE 1

KITH NARRATIVE:

SPACESTHROUGHSTORYTELLING

Architecture isn't just about buildings; it's about the stories they hold. "Kith" dives deep into this idea, focusing on how spaces connect us and tell our tales. It's about feeling at home, even in unfamiliar places, and finding a sense of belonging.

In this journey, we'll see how spaces become storytellers. Every building, from historic landmarks to cozy homes, has a story to share.

But kith isn't limited to physical spaces. It extends to instangible realms, where communities gather and more stories unfold. Together, let's uncover the stories hidden within the spaces in Central of Kuala Lumpur, uncovering the hidden stories that shape our identity and deepen our sense of belonging and connection.

PHASE 2

LIVE PROJECT:

POSSIBILITYARCHITECTURE

As an extension of Phase 1, students will collaborate in groups to propose an exploratory live project. The project's scope, determined by you and your team, can encompass a wide range of possibilities related to exploratory drawings. These ideas should directly address the site's needs and can express various design approaches inspired by, but not limited to, the whimsical, social, economic, speculative, political, or poetic.

Every design intention must be deeply connected to the site's context. The goal is to develop design possibilities that respond to the REXKL context through spatial experiences, promoting a vibrant and creative city by merging interior architecture with cultural appreciation.

FINAL OUTCOME

SITE: REXKL

PROPOSALS

The process began with a site visit to REXKL, where the students gained firsthand experience of the space. The large group of students was divided into smaller teams, with each team tasked with creating a complete set of design proposals. After the designs are developed, one design from each group will be chosen as the most fitting or suitable for the project, likely based on how well it addresses the project's goals and the site's unique characteristics.

WORK IN PROGRESS...

WORKOUT WORKOUT WORKOUT

In this group project, I was part of the website team under the documentation team, where I was responsible for the 'Site Context' and 'Budget' sections of the website. Working as a team, we divided tasks and collaborated to ensure a consistent color scheme and mobile-friendly design. Additionally, we created posters, QR codes, and other related materials.

During my spare time, I took the opportunity to learn weaving, with JS patiently guiding me through the process. It was more challenging than I anticipated; when mistakes or misalignments occurred, we had to undo and redo the work. Despite the limited time, I successfully completed an extra section of the net.

PHASE 3

GLIMPSES OF KITH SPATIAL IMAGINATION

- Script of the Eternal Ink

Anexperientialspace

In Phase 3, all the work developed throughout Phase 1 should be combined. This phase involves reinventing and molding those narratives into spatial ideas. The task is to select a sequence of spaces that will be further detailed using spatial depiction, all within the chosen site in the vicinity of KL.

Spatial planning should reflect the theme or storyline imagined and interpreted through the narratives of the chosen topic. The exploration of the storytelling displayed during Phase 1 may be integrated into Phase 3, depending on how the narrative has evolved.

MODEL MAKINGCUSTOMIZE AN INK STICK

MaterialsNeeded:

Bamboo Charcoal: Finely ground into a powder.

Gelatin: Acts as a binder to hold the charcoal particles together.

Water: To dissolve the gelatin.

Pandan flavoring extract: To adding an extra layer of significance to the creative process.

Mold: To shape the ink stick.

Mortar and Pestle: For grinding and mixing.

Heat Source: To dissolve the gelatin.

To make an ink stick, first dissolve gelatin in a small amount of warm water, stirring until it forms a smooth solution. Gradually mix the charcoal powder into the gelatin, creating a thick, even paste. Once the mixture is ready, pour or press it into a mold of your desired shape, smoothing the surface with a spatula. Allow the ink stick to dry for several days in a cool, dry place, avoiding direct sunlight or high heat to prevent cracking.

Once fully dried, carefully remove the ink stick from the mold. For a more polished finish, you can optionally cure the ink stick by gently rubbing it on a smooth stone surface. The finished ink stick can be used by rubbing it on an inkstone with water to produce ink for calligraphy, painting, or other art forms.

MENTOR- Ar. IDr. Esmonde Yap

The first time we met AR IDr. Esmonde Yap was in his office, where he was cheerful and easy to talk to, offering us many valuable ideas. Our second meeting took place a week later during a tutorial at Taylor University. He shared that he had briefly studied in the architecture department at Taylor and had also studied abroad in China. By the age of 27, he had already obtained his architect qualification. Despite his young age and impressive achievements, he remains a humble mentor, and it’s a great fortune to engage with someone so remarkable.

Finally, although he had initially mentioned he might not attend the final presentation, he unexpectedly showed up and expressed his pleasure with the performance of all his students.

FINAL PRESENTATION REFLECTION

This semester has been both fulfilling and distinct from my previous experiences at IAD. The emphasis was more on graphic design and conceptual work. The semester flew by, filled with a busy cycle of making mistakes, finding direction, making more mistakes, and then course-correcting. In the end, the results were satisfying.

During Phase 1, I felt confused and a bit lost, unsure if my design was on the right path. Seeing my classmates' impressive work made me feel insecure at times. However, through continued exploration, drawing inspiration from others, and with guidance from my teachers, I eventually found my direction at last.

In Phase 2, when the entire class worked together on a live project, there was a period of confusion and uncertainty. Everyone seemed a bit lost, and disagreements were inevitable. Despite this, we successfully completed the project in the end. I'm thankful for the experience of working on such a large group project, as it allowed me to learn many things that individual projects couldn't learn.

In the final Phase 3, time seemed to pass incredibly quickly. Throughout the process, I kept making mistakes and adjusting to find the right direction. However, I am really grateful that I managed to survive until the end of the semester.
