Editors’ Letter Welcome to the March / April issue of Chiltern View Thame magazine. We are feeling optimistic here at Chiltern View headquarters because although the weather outside our windows is cold and grey, we have definitely got that ‘Spring’ feeling. We decided on these lovely bright and sunny front covers that truly represent this time of year and cheer us all up. It’s a time of new beginnings, particularly in our gardens, with leaves turning green, shrubs starting to bloom and spring flowers poking their heads up. There’s still time to realise those ‘New Year’ resolutions and perhaps join a new club or take up a new sport? How about the Thame Flower Club, Thame Squash Club or going along to Thame Players to join in or watch one of their many excellent shows coming up? Once the weather starts to improve, why not enjoy one of the beautiful Walks in The Chilterns (p30) and don’t forget Mother’s Day (March 26th); what about an alternative gift of a book this year? (p20), a refreshing change from flowers or chocolates! It is definitely a time for renewal, new plans for holidays, homes and gardens and here at Chiltern View we strive hard to help with those plans. We have many advertisers, with a wide range of skills and products – but all LOCAL – all here to help you realise your plans for renewal. Until the next time…

this classic curry is great for a mid-week family supper – it’s quick to make and tastes delicious! IngredIents:

Stir in the pepper and courgette and fry for a further minute. 3. Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes until no longer pink, stirring all the time. Pour in the coconut milk and simmer gently for 10 minutes until the chicken is cooked. Stir in the soy and fish sauces and lime juice. 4. Thame Youth Memorial was established to provide a space dedicated to those we lose too young, for the people of Thame and surrounding villages. It is somewhere that friends and family can meet or, be alone with their thoughts, in a safe, neutral environment. The project was funded through 4 years of fundraising and Community donations and was opened in September 2013. Since then, the Memorial garden has been a focal point for those affected by such loss and given comfort to many. 14

Spring Reads Wicked by Gregory Maguire

We all know what happened when Dorothy arrived in the Land of Oz courtesy of a cyclone. She killed the Wicked Witch of the East and magically acquired her ruby slippers. Helped by Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, she travelled to the Emerald City with three friends and asked the Wizard to send her back to Kansas. And of course, we know about her green enemy: The Wicked Witch of the West. But do we really know the rest of the story? What DID happen in Oz before this little girl from Kansas carelessly ‘dropped’ in? Wicked, is the story of the witches of Oz as imagined by Gregory Maguire. Familiar to many people these days through the hit West End musical of the same name, this novel is very different in tone to the musical with much more adult themes. It addresses politics, animal rights, outcasts, fate, friendships, and the philosophical question of what makes us bad: are people born wicked or do they become wicked purely by living up to people’s expectations of them? Elphaba Thropp was born with an unfortunate colour skin tone and right from the start felt rejected like an outcast. She feels as if she has no place in the world but all that is set to change when she arrives at Shiz University. Here she meets her total opposite, Glinda, and despite an initial hatred of each other they do become best friends. But where will that friendship take them? They are destined to follow separate paths: one of good and one of evil. The Good Witch and The Wicked Witch. It is how that happens and how they discover their true purpose and destiny that forms the heart of this immersive fantasy novel. Clearly Oz is not just for children. 20

Naughty Amelia Jane! by Enid Blyton

Some books never fail to entertain generation after generation and the Amelia Jane books by Enid Blyton are no exception. At some point in childhood we all wonder what would happen if our toys were alive. Well in this nursery they are. Amelia Jane is a big ragdoll and she is not just big, she is bad. And the other toys are generally scared of her. Hardly surprising when she does things like throwing pints of milk over other toys on a regular basis! These short chapters almost work as individual short stories which makes it a nice transition for readers to proper ‘chapter books’. Each chapter sees Amelia Jane getting into trouble and being naughty but ultimately learning a lesson: one that she seems destined to forget despite her protestations that she ‘will be good from now’. Lessons that demonstrate to the reader why it is important to be kind and considerate towards others. In the words of Enid Blyton: “I do somehow feel perfectly certain that she can’t be good for long.” By Willow Coby

Tinnitus

A common symptom of many hearing and ear conditions is tinnitus. Tinnitus is the term meaning sounds or noises that come from inside your body or head rather than from an outside source. Tinnitus can often be more distressing than the actual condition that it is a symptom of. This was certainly the case for Nikki Magrath, who suffered sudden, devastating hearing loss over the course of a weekend. The tinnitus that was a symptom of the damage to the inner ear, was by far the worse element of the whole episode. Tinnitus is nearly always accompanied by hearing loss, and wearing hearing devices certainly seems to help manage the effect of the symptom whilst wearing them. Hearing aids enhance the sounds you want to hear, such as speech and general environmental noises, this in turn lessens the effect of the tinnitus.

What causes tinnitus?

There are many causes of tinnitus. The most common is damage to the inner ear - the cochlea. If there is damage somewhere in the auditory system the brain can try to fill the space with ‘noise’. Damage to the inner ear can occur from exposure to noise, such as going to a very loud music event or gun fire. Sometimes certain prescription drugs cause tinnitus as a side effect. If your outer ear is blocked with wax, this can sometimes make you very aware of tinnitus, as you are no longer hearing everyday environmental noises. Changes in blood flow such as high blood pressure can cause tinnitus and as a result the tinnitus can sometimes be an early warning sign of more serious conditions.

Tinnitus is a complex issue and there is no one miracle cure for the symptoms. The best approach is to offer a personalised support service, a safe place to talk and share Tinnitus is very closely linked to emotional frustrations whilst providing qualified information to help fully stress; it is certainly reported that when stress understand the condition and offer practical tactics and levels are high, tinnitus seems to be solutions that help lessen the negative impact on everyday exacerbated. Mother’s Day This year we celebrate Mother’s Day on 26 March. You may not realise, but Mother’s Day happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent and originally had religious traditions attached to it. In the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised or where they attended as a child. Thus families would be reunited. This was known as going ‘a mothering' or Mothering Sunday. It was commonplace for the Lent fast which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared. Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts. This was called ‘Mothers Day.’ 26

The celebrations of Mothering Sunday and Mother’s Day have generally combined into one annual occasion. The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908 in West Virginia as a memorial to her mum. By the 1920’s however Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greetings cards. Celebrating the day became less popular. It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more. Princes Risborough Ridgeway Circular Walk Whiteleaf Woods

Walk Length: 7 mile circular walk Starting Point: Princes Risborough Library, Bell St, Princes Risborough HP27 0AA A 7 mile circular walk following sections of The Ridgeway National Trail and the Chiltern Way, through best of Chilterns scenery including wooded hills and nature reserves. You will pass some great rural pubs, a windmill and some far-reaching views. The walk starts gently along the Ridgeway National Trail, an ancient path widely recognized as England’s oldest road, dating back to the Neolithic Age. The route then leaves the Ridgeway and climbs up to Loosley Row, home to the Lacey Green Windmill, England’s oldest remaining ‘smock’ mill, so called due to its resemblance to an old fashioned farmer’s smock. The 17th century windmill was restored to working by The Chiltern Society and is open to the public at certain times. You can refuel at the Whip Inn, perched next to the Windmill or a little further on at the historic Pink & Lily pub, frequented by the famous First World War poet Rupert Brooke. From here on the route takes you through spectacular beech woodlands until you come out on open downland at Whiteleaf Hill. : The chalk hill-figure of

Whiteleaf Cross has dominated the local landscape for several centuries. Its full history is unknown but is thought to have been constructed by the Saxon king Edward the Elder to commemorate a battle. The Bronze Age burial mounds date back to c35002500 BC. There are several WWI practice trenches at the southern end of the site adjacent to The Ridgeway. From Whiteleaf Hill you can enjoy panoramic views over the Aylesbury Vale, before dropping back down to Princes Risborough. Refreshments: There are two pubs along the route, the Whip Inn (Lacey Green) and the Pink & Lily pub (Parslow’s Hillock) which make excellent stops-off. Alternatively there are pubs and cafes in Princes Risborough. A moderate walk on easy but sometimes muddy tracks and along quiet lanes. One easy climb. New for 2017, the Chilterns Walking Festival invites people to explore the landscapes, locations and legends of The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The spring festival runs from 15th – 29th May, with an exciting programme of walks, talks and special events. Grab some comfy walking shoes and

Leptospirosis. – A potentially fatal disease. Leptospirosis is a lifethreatening disease affecting many animal species including dogs and humans. Organisms, similar to bacteria, called spirochetes, cause the disease and are carried in the kidneys of wildlife, such as mice and rats and pass out in their urine. The urine is infectious but the spirochete can survive in damp, muddy areas like riverbanks or wet farm tracks. Our dogs can become infected by walking and playing in these areas.

Signs include: sudden fever, stiffness, weakness, vomiting and diarrhoea, jaundice, haemorrhage and acute renal failure. As the disease progresses to affect the liver and kidneys, especially in vulnerable animals, such as the young or unvaccinated dogs, sadly, it can be fatal. Vaccinations over the last 30 years have been very successful in reducing the incidence of two main types of the disease in dogs (L.canicola and L.icterohaemorrhagiae). Recently, however, we have seen an increase in the European strains, L.grippotyphosa and L. pomona.

Typically the disease is treated with the use of antibiotics but we have, now, the ability to vaccinate against these new strains with the L4 vaccine, available from your veterinary surgeon. Vaccination needs to be repeated every year and can be started at any age over 6 weeks old. Do not take risks. Speak to your vet. Dr Mandy Elgin BVMS MRCVS

Zany for Zumba!

T

It

If you’re looking to get in shape for summer, why not dance your way to fitness? Zumba is one of the most popular exercise classes in the UK, with classes held in schools, community centres and halls across the country. 15 million people have tried it so far, for good reason. Zumba is fun, energetic and suitable for beginners up. You don’t need any special equipment, just some comfy clothes that allow you to move freely, and a pair of non-slip shoes. The music is usually Latin-inspired, so it’s fast and makes you want to move. There’s a little bit of salsa, a dash of hip-hop, a dollop of mambo, and a few more styles thrown into the mix. Zumba also includes a few aerobic moves, such as squats 32

and lunges. Your instructor will demonstrate key moves, then the class will follow them together. Don’t worry about going wrong, no one gets all the moves right straight away, and no one cares. Half of the fun of Zumba is being able to laugh at yourself as you spin the wrong way. You’ll probably be out of breathe, red-faced and sweaty when you finish the class, but you’ll also be counting down the days to the next class. To find a class near you, visit: www.zumba.com To advertise here please email salesvv@live.co.uk
