Editors Letter Welcome to the April issue of Princes Risborough View magazine. We do hope you like the front cover this month. It was taken by a local photographer, Gareth Hendley (page 32). He sent across many lovely pictures but we thought this one would bring a little bit of Spring to you after all this cold weather. An added bonus this month is our brand new competition which is in conjunction with the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury. They have very kindly offered 4 tickets to Birds of a Feather in May so get your entries in now (details on page 12).

April will be a busy month for us here at Chiltern Directories as we move offices. We are not going far but we are very excited as we will have a bit more room and other local businesses as neighbours. Our business is expanding with the launch of our new magazine Thame View, last month, which seems to have been very well received but we are continuing to do what we do best and keep things local for you. Princes Risborough View has all the local community events and articles specific to your area and we are always looking for more so please do send ideas in to us. Until next month...

Recipe of the Month

Spiced Rack of Lamb with Fragrant Rice Serves 4, Ready in 1 hour

Perfect for a spring Sunday lunch or stylish supper this quick and easy lamb dish is full of flavor. Choose a couple of meaty racks of lamb from a good butcher and score the layers of fat before spreading with the harissa paste. Serve with a cooling garlic and mint yoghurt sauce. Ingredients:

Method:

• 1 tbsp harissa paste (see Tip)

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, 400F, Gas 6. Spread the harissa paste over the lamb racks. Place the racks in an oiled roasting tin and add the onion wedges.

• 2 trimmed racks of lamb, each with 6 bones • 2 red onions, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 50g butter • 225g basmati rice, rinsed and drained • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 750ml vegetable stock • Generous pinch saffron strands • 50g sultanas • 40g flaked almonds, lightly toasted • 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds Tip: Harissa paste is a fiery hot North African blend of red chilli peppers and spices – just a little goes a long way so use sparingly. You’ll find it in small jars near the dried herb and spice sections in most large supermarkets. 8

2. Roast in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes depending on how pink you like your lamb. Remove from the oven. Cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 minutes – the lamb will be juicier and easier to carve. 3. Meanwhile, heat the butter in a heavy-based pan until melted and foaming. Add the rice and garlic. Fry gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring until the rice is translucent. Pour in the stock. Add the saffron and bring to the boil, stirring. 4. Cover the pan with a tight fitting lid. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for 15-20 minutes without removing the lid until the rice is tender and all the liquid is absorbed. Remove from the heat. Fork through to separate the grains. Add the sultanas, flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds. 5. Carve the lamb racks into individual cutlets and serve immediately with the fragrant rice and roast onion wedges.

Your Health Stepping Out Without Foot Pain… with the pain especially if there is some swelling around the joint. However, good footwear is very important, a wide toe-box or a rocker shoe.

The foot is one of the most complex parts of the body and an amazing piece of engineering. It consists of 28 bones connected by numerous joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Foot pain is very common and in this month’s article we are going to look at some of the causes of foot pain. A study in 2004 showed that 20% of men and 24% of women between the ages of 18 – 80 have experienced foot pain. It has been classified as disabling and linked to limitations in activities of everyday living and deterioration of health-quality of life. Hallux Rigidus, or osteoarthritis of the big toe is a degenerative condition, possibly a result of wear and tear on the joint over time. People of all ages can be affected, male or female, but it is more common in women over the age of fifty. Pain is most notable just before toe-off and can become worse with an elevated heel. Anti-inflammatory medication may help initially 18

A bunion, or Hallux Valgus, is a bony lump on the side of the foot, which develops when your big toe starts to angle towards your second toe. The bunion may eventually cause discomfort and pain and the skin over the lump can become red and sore. Bunions affect more women than men and seem to run in families. Correct footwear is essential to relieve the pain of a bunion, a wide toe box and a flat heel can slow down the process and alleviate discomfort. A Morton’s neuroma is a condition that affects one of the nerves that runs between the metatarsal bones in the foot, commonly between the third and fourth. It is caused by the nerve becoming inflamed and thickened. The pain may be intermittent at first and may radiate down one of the toes or to the top of the foot. Patient’s sometimes say they feel a burning sensation or a sharp pain, numbness or tingling. Tight or ill-fitting footwear often makes this condition worse so again, sensible footwear that is not too narrow will be a better option. Plantar fasciitis is when the band of tissue on the bottom

of the foot is over-stretched causing pain where it attaches to the heel bone. The pain is often worse first thing in the morning or after rest. Self help includes icing the area 3 or 4 times a day for 10 minutes duration; friction rub the area with a thumb to break down the thickened tissue; and stretching the calf muscles will ease the structure under the foot. There are a variety of interventions available for treating foot pain and orthotic insoles are widely prescribed as one form of conservative treatment that can have a positive outcome. While ‘off the shelf’ orthotics may give some relief, they tend to only do half the job. A recent study in 2008 reported that foot pain was significantly improved with custom made orthotics, as was health related quality of life. At The Luxton Clinic we take all types of foot pain very seriously and offer a full orthopaedic and biomechanical assessment. As well as offering a variety of conservative treatments we prescribe custom made orthotics which we believe to be a high quality product at a very reasonable price. If you would like more information or if you have foot pain, please phone TLC on 01844 352200.

Book Review By Emily Hyde

The Fault in Our Stars: John Green The Fault in our Stars follows 16-year-old Hazel as she struggles through life – meeting new friends, falling in love all while dealing with Stage 4 thyroid cancer. At the age of thirteen, Hazel was diagnosed with cancer and came close to death not long after. Thanks to a new Miracle drug, Hazel has been given a few extra years. She expresses the desire to stay in her room but her forceful mother sends her to a support group for cancer patients in the local church hall. While at one of these meetings, she meets the mysterious Augustus Waters – an ex-basketball player and cancer amputee. The rest of the novel follows the two as they travel to Amsterdam to meet the author of Hazel’s favourite book, about another cancer patient, and they begin to fall in love. The book is written from Hazel’s point of view, with the subject of cancer being tackled and fully explained differently to most other books. Hazel is fully aware of what will happen to her and her attitude to her 20

diagnosis is inspiring. The novel explores the different areas of support that she is given and how these affect her. Her mother tries too hard to control her while her father is respectful but always aware of how delicate his daughter seems. Augustus Waters provides the perfect outlet for all her emotions and it is a pleasure to watch them grow as characters. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a more realistic read. It is an emotional and inspiring read. Fault in our Stars seems like another cancer survivor story but underneath it is a tragic story of two starcrossed lovers, much like a modern day Romeo and Juliet. Completely amazing and unput-downable. If you do enjoy Fault in our Stars, John Green has also written Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances, and Will Grayson, Will Grayson.

John Green Born in Orlando, Florida in 1977, John Green is a successful American author, educator and YouTuber. He

has written several books to date, his work has been recognised with the Michael L.Prinz Award, and he is a #1 New York Times bestseller. Along with his brother Hank, John makes YouTube videos under the name ‘vlogbrothers’. In 2007, they started the Brotherhood 2.0 project and from this was born the most powerful fan group on the Internet, known as the Nerdfighters. They are also responsible for the record label DFTBA (Don’t Forget to Be Awesome). John currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife Sarah and son Henry. He is expecting a daughter later this year.

Size Matters

A personal journey by Maureen Cole, Care Management Consultant at Independent Living, Princes Risborough. I have bunions – a consequence of cramming my sixteen year old feet into pointed stilettos and jiving away my lunchtimes and evenings in the Liverpool Cavern, so many years ago. I once sought orthopaedic advice, only to be told by the consultant that an operation

The good news is that we no longer need to sacrifice style for comfort.

might not be successful as I had by this time got ‘collapsed metatarsal heads.’ Painful personal experience prompted me to source footwear specially designed and manufactured for those of us with ‘problem feet.’

Our specially trained staff are here to measure your feet and offer advice and guidance. Why not call in and see us at Woodway, Princes Risborough or call us on 01844 273050.

All the footwear is available in a wide range of styles and colours.

Technology No April Fools: odd gadgets that really exist Every year, technology firms join in the April Fools fun - so for example in recent years Google announced self-driving racing cars, Toshiba pretended to make a 3D monocle and video site Animoto offered bark recognition for dogs. Not all odd-sounding technology items are fakes, though: there are some truly strange items and accessories out there. Some of the oddest items are related to smartphones and tablets, such as the iStuck mobile phone stand (£3) that looks like chewed bubblegum, the Knuckles iPhone case - designed to look like a knuckle duster - and the just-announced iPotty (£39), a child’s potty with a built-in iPad stand. The idea, apparently, is that letting children use iPads while on the potty will make toilet training a fun game. Other gadgets are more sensible, but rather odd looking - such as the iPhone SLR mount, which enables you to attach enormous SLR camera lenses to your phone. It might look like a novelty item,

30

but the price says otherwise: at the current US exchange rate, it’s £156 plus shipping and tax, and of course that doesn’t include the lenses. The mount is available for both Nikon and Canon lenses and promises to bring SLR effects such as variable depth of field to “the camera you carry with you every day”. Another odd-looking but fairly sensible gadget is the Handspresso Auto ESE, a portable espresso coffee maker designed for in-car use. It uses the Easy Serving Espresso pods you might have seen for ordinary domestic coffee makers, and it’s particularly handy for road warriors who’d rather not pay inflated prices for motorway service station coffees. At around £130 it isn’t cheap, but if you use it regularly it’ll soon pay for itself. You can buy odd things for your house too, and if you’re a musician or a fan of rock music you’ll appreciate the Marshall Fridge. From the outside it looks like the iconic Marshall amplifier stack, and it even uses authentic Marshall parts including the famous logo, fret cloth and brass-finished faceplate with knobs that go up to eleven, but inside it’s - yes! - a fridge. The manufacturer says it’s “the ultimate

combination of rock and refrigeration”. Yours for £405. Have you ever wished your fork could nag you about your eating? Good news if you have: the Hapifork (around £70) may look like an ordinary fork, but it’s stuffed with sensors that monitor how quickly you’re eating. It measures the number of times you put the fork in your mouth, the time between each serving and the total time you’ve spent eating, and vibrates and flashes if you’re eating too quickly. The data is then sent to your smartphone. For now the line-up doesn’t extend to other cutlery, but manufacturer HAPIlabs says a spoon is in development. The HAPIfork was one of several odd gadgets shown at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, but it wasn’t the oddest: we saw GPS-enabled gadgets such as the TrakDot luggage locator (around £30 plus a £10 annual subscription), Nano Nails, which turn long fingernails into styluses for touchscreens (price tbc); the iMusic BodyRhythm, a musicpowered massager that makes you look like you’re wearing a toilet seat around your neck (currently accepting pre-orders for $69, around £44), and the thoroughly odd Minime, which can create a phone case or a cuddly toy that includes a 3D rendering of your child’s face (or anybody else’s face). Expect to see Minime kiosks in shopping malls later this year.

Spring Has Sprung!

With Easter now behind us and the clocks going forward, we really are in the gardening season. The sun has already made a few appearances and at last the soil is warming up. But do beware! The bigger garden centres will try to seduce you with huge stocks of tender bedding plants, some already in colour. There is no doubt they look appealing but don’t rush in and snap them all up. These plants will have been grown under glass in almost scientific conditions with temperatures kept at the optimum level. They will look a treat in your garden on a bright sunny April day - but a cloudless day in early Spring probably means a clear frosty night - and in the morning your beautiful bedding display will have been devastated by the cold. If you do want to put some early season colour in your garden or containers, stick with pansies, primroses and polyanthus. These plants are able to cope with cold nights and will stand up against any late frosts. 38

Hopefully you will have given your vegetable plot a good digging over and it should now be ready for some early planting. A dressing of poultry pellets or fish blood and bone - both organic fertilisers - will make sure your soil is full of nutrients and will give your plants a great start in life. Get your seed potatoes in now, and if you have grown broad beans and leeks from seed, your young seedlings should be ready to plant out too. Do keep an eye on the weather forecast for frost. These plants can survive a slight frost, but if sustained bad weather is on the cards, protect them at night with some horticultural fleece.

If you have a greenhouse, you can really get going now and start to sow any veg variety that takes your fancy. If you don’t have the luxury of growing under glass, don’t be put off. You’ll be surprised how many seed trays you can get on your window sills. It is still a bit early to sow directly into the soil - wait until the start of May when the ground will have benefitted from a few days of warmth from the sun and your seeds will happily germinate. See you soon - happy gardening,

Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Risborough Annual Town Festival Programme Released

The popular Street Fair will kick off this year’s annual town festival and culminate with a musical weekend with the Rollin Stoned set to headline Rizfest 2013. The increasingly popular street fair will be held in the High St on Saturday 6th July with an array of local stallholders who will be supported by musical performances from local schools in the Market Square. The 10K run and Children’s Chocolate Hunt on the 7th will be followed by a week long programme of events organised by local businesses, clubs and societies ranging from tours, talks, and walks. Rizfest kicks off on the evening of Friday 12th with a concert by Risborough’s own Skasouls. This concert will take place in the Community Centre in Wades Park. Skasouls will be supported by the fabulous Dung Beatles, the premier Beatles tribute act in the South East.

homage to their idols, albeit with an undercurrent of gentle parody never too far from the surface. The line-up also includes The Mighty Redox half punk/half hippy staples of Oxford music; playing upbeat psychedelic blues workouts of pure energy. Annirythmics will transport you back to the heady days of the Eighties, when Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were the king and queen of the British music industry. Local “not just another Rock Band” Black Rose, with Splash the Cash playing a collection of Johnny Cash songs and local girls 2 Non Blondes and Popular Jake completing the days line up.

The music continues on Sunday 14th with Icecoldplay - you can guess the act and Sunblaze steel band - a festival favourite already confirmed. Further acts will be announced in due course. For more details checkout Rizfest.com

Saturday 13th sees Rizfest move to the Princes Risborough School playing field where a day of music culminates with the Rollin Stoned providing a show that is an affectionate and skilfully observed

Great Local Days Out

The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre

This award-winning little Museum is aimed at 6 to 12 year-olds and their families. It has three fun and fact-packed galleries along with George’s Crafty Kitchen, Miss Honey’s classroom, Cafe Twit and the Museum shop. Visitors can find out about Roald Dahl’s real life adventures and how they inspired his books, peek into his original Writing Hut, and make up their own gobblefunk words and stories, using the interactive displays. Some of the most popular activities include making your own stopframe animation film, exploring the cockpit of a WWII Gladiator, like the one Roald Dahl flew, testing your spark-factor on the Sparkometer and joining in the regular storytelling sessions. Over the Easter holidays, the Museum is offering a dazzling array of workshops and activities, including an Easter egg hunt and egg decorating sessions, an April Fools’ Day trail, as well as free storytelling and crafts. There will also be visits from some inspiring children’s authors, including Josh Lacey, author of Roald Dahl Funny Prize shortlisted book The Dragonsitter. Josh is the Museum’s Writer in Residence and will be delivering exciting sessions at the Museum and a programme of workshops within local schools until June. Café Twit on site, serves tempting freshly-made lunches and snacks (including a mouth-watering choice of cakes), either inside the café, or in the pleasant cobbled courtyard, weather permitting. How about a generous slice of Bogtrotter chocolate cake washed down with a fizzy ice-cream swishwiffler? Healthy 52

home-made soups and salads are also on the menu for the more health-conscious visitor! The Museum is situated in the picturesque High Street of Great Missenden – the village that was home to Roald Dahl for 36 years until his death in 1990. Roald Dahl was determined that all his papers - manuscripts, photographs, his ‘Ideas Book’, correspondence (including his earliest letters home to his mother from boarding school) - should stay together. Visitors can take a peek behind the scenes at the Museum’s archive store on regular archive tours led by the Collections Manager and Archivist, Rachel White. There’s also a chance to explore the village and surroundings, using the Museum’s free Village Trail and Countryside Trail leaflets to discover some of the places which inspired Roald Dahl and which feature in the stories. The Village Trail includes directions to Roald Dahl’s grave above the village in the pretty churchyard of St Peter and Paul, the parish church. Don’t miss Araminta Fizzackerly, the wonderfully quirky old-fashioned sweet shop just opposite the Museum, which stocks all of Roald Dahl’s favourite sweets!

Princes Risborough Afternoon W.I. Our April meeting is going to be a somewhat follow on from our first outing of the year, that outing was to Hearing Dogs at Saunderton to see where the dogs get their training for such important work that they are about to take on. Whilst not only a talk on dogs, our guest speaker Mr Tim Addison is going to tell us true stories that he and some of his colleagues have come across in rescuing wildlife. It sounds fascinating and difficult at times. Last month Anton of Anton Chocolates came along & demonstrated his such tempting range of chocolates and left lots for us to sample!! That was followed by a birthday tea, not just a cuppa & a biscuit this time, shut your eyes & you could imagine you were at the Ritz, with all the tempting sandwiches and cakes served on special old time tea services, by committee members. Well done ladies!

Princes Risborough Morning W.I. The next meeting is on Wednesday April 10th in Carrington Room of the Community Centre . We will be having a talk by Barbara Askew entitled Happy & Glorious: English Coronations.
