Editors Letter It’s hard to imagine that at the time of you reading this, Christmas and a brand New Year will be just around the corner. The weather as I write this is still unseasonably warm but the beautiful rusty red and orange leaves of Autumn are now dropping, signalling that winter and the end of 2011 is on it’s way. We have had a great year here at Chiltern Directories. With both magazines growing all the time and such positive and encouraging comments from both the community and advertisers, we are really looking forward to what 2012 will bring. Village View is at 72 pages and full to bursting and we are thrilled to say that Princes Risborough View is now at 56 pages and continuing to grow.

We are delighted that we have been joined by a new member of the team. Her name is Debbie and she has been a fantastic addition, as is our brilliant new designer, Ed who keeps the magazines looking their very best. We also have our new website up and running so check us out at: www.chilterndirectories.co.uk. We receive lots of feedback about how good the magazines look and we are very proud of that. Our aim is for them to continually improve and grow so please keep letting us know your thoughts. We would like to thank you all for your continued support and wish you a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Our very first Christmas!

We have put a lot of thought into our first Christmas in store at Gorgeous Giggles. Myself and my husband have always been big children when it comes to Christmas festivities and now we get to share this in our town of Princes Risborough. The Christmas tree that you see in the Gorgeous Giggles window we hope will bring lots of smiles onto your little gigglers faces. There is nothing quite as special as the ‘wow’ face of a child filled with the excitement at Christmas time. On Friday 2nd Dec Princes Risborough will see the turning on of the Christmas lights and

Gorgeous Giggles with many other shops will be staying open until 9pm. Gorgeous Giggles will continue late night shopping (until 9pm) on every Wednesday leading up to Christmas (7th, 14th, 23rd Dec).

On the 17th Dec Gorgeous Giggles will have a Christmas party all day. We will be having winter warmers for all, so come and join in our festivities, perfect for getting in the Christmas mood.

We are introducing a post box to Father Christmas in store, you will be able see your little one’s face light up when they open a personal response from the cheery man himself (after all we at Gorgeous Giggles know him well and his reindeer friends).

Don’t forget, we offer a “secret” home delivery service to assist where we can!

We will be holding a festive drawing competition which will be launched in store on Saturday 10th Dec which could see your giggler win some festive goodies. Come in store for details.

With our new toy department and the extended clothing range we are aiming to be able to offer everything from stocking fillers to ‘big’ presents… but most of all I hope you enjoy ‘the shop for children’ during this festive time and we hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and a prosperous 2012!

Feed The Birds! Now the nights are getting longer and the days much colder, we all need some extra TLC to get us through the winter. And of course, so do our feathered friends. Although a good proportion of birds migrate south in the winter, our hardy resident birds stay put and once the autumn berries and insects disappear, they have to fend for themselves. This is the critical time when they need our help. I believe everyone enjoys watching wild birds in their garden - and there’s no better way of encouraging regular visits from a variety of birds by offering a menu of nutritional high energy feeds. Different species of birds prefer different feeds. The Tit family, for example, must have hanging feedthere are many styles of feeder available and a good choice of food such as No Mess Seed Mix that leaves no husks to germinate.

Finches and Wrens love White Millet whilst Blackbirds and Goldfinches enjoy a mix with aniseed, Chaffinch and Robins like peanuts. High energy fat balls , bird cakes and mealworms are all full of goodness and will go down a treat. If you are in doubt - do come in and ask for advice. Most birds will feed from a table - the obvious benefit of a table is the food is off the ground -away from cats! A roof on a table is a good idea as it prevents the food becoming waterlogged. And don’t forget to provide clean drinking water. Like us, birds need

to drink - and remember to make sure the water doesn’t freeze in the cold weather. This winter we have increased our bird food section, so I’m sure we have something for every bird in any garden. We offer a free local delivery service for any of our bulk bird food bags and tables - and if you are looking for a lovely bird friendly Christmas present, we are happy to reserve any table or feeder. See you soon,

Recipe of the Month

Stollen

Serves 6-8

Recipe and photograph courtesy of Chef Beverley Glock www.splatcooking.net

Stollen is a yeasted dough, it can be made in advance, frozen and then iced when you are ready to eat it. This recipe will make 1 large or 6-8 mini stolen. If you make mini stolen these are lovely to give as Christmas Pressies. Ingredients: 100g raisins 100g sultanas 100g currants 100g mixed peel 100g ground almonds 3 tablespoons rum 450g strong white flour 50g caster sugar 2 x sachets fast action yeast 175ml warm milk 2 eggs, beaten 25g melted butter pinch of salt grated zest of 1 orange grated zest of 1 lemon 225g marzipan icing sugar and egg to glaze

Method: 1. Place dried fruit, ground almonds and rum in a basin, stir and set to one side 2. Place flour, sugar, yeast, milk, eggs and butter into a large bowl along with the orange and lemon zest and a pinch of salt and stir to make a smooth dough. 20

3. Turn out onto a clean, floured work surface and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, around 10 minutes. Cover with a damp cloth or oiled clingfilm and leave in a warm place until doubled in size, approx 1-2 hours. 4. Knock the dough back and add in the soaked fruit, knead this in evenly, split the dough into 6-8 pieces if you wish to make smaller stolen, roll each into an oblong. Split the marzipan into the same quantity as the stollen, roll into a sausage shape and lay along the middle of each oblong, roll the dough over the marzipan leaving the seam underneath, repeat with the other pieces of dough. 5. Place on a greased baking tray, cover with oiled clingfilm and leave in a warm place to double in size, approx 1 hour. 6. Heat oven to gas 6/200c, brush the stollens with egg and bake for 40-45 minutes (20-25 minutes for smaller stolen) or if using an Aga in the top oven for around 25-30 minutes (15-20 minutes for small stolen). Allow to cool then pour over glace icing and serve. If you’re intending eating these at Christmas then freeze them when they have cooled and ice them when you’re ready to eat them.

Osteoarthritis‌ With Debby Luxton BSc (Hons) Registered Podiatrist

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis with many people over the age of 55 showing some signs of this condition. Essentially it is degenerative and slowly progressive and is commonly found in the small joints of the hands as well as the weight bearing joints of the hips, knees and spine. It is also common in the big toe oint where it is known as Hallux Limitus.

This form of arthritis mainly affects the cartilage in the joints and as it wears away, the bones rub together causing discomfort and pain. Bony outgrowths or spurs can occur and the affected joint may become swollen and misshapen. The joint capsule may become inflamed and other soft tissues such as ligaments and muscles can also become damaged, leading to further inflammation. Patients find there is limited joint movement and a deep,

achy joint pain that is initiated by activity, and relieved by rest. Osteopaths can help to manage OA by working on the surrounding tissues and joints, and providing guidance on changes to lifestyle in order to prevent further degeneration. Gentle osteopathic treatment on an on-going basis helps to reduce inflammation and improves the mobility of the affected joint.

For more information or to make an appointment, please phone Debby Luxton, Registered Podiatrist, on 01844 352200.

The Christmas Party! By Mike Payne Many of the Princes Risborough children who grew up in the town between the 1950’s and 1980’s were in some way connected to the local factories, the Churches, the British Legion, or even the Fire Station.

And one of the most thrilling experiences, and something that they all looked forward to each year were the Christmas parties put on by those companies and organisations. The girls would put on their best party frocks and the boys would dress in their Sunday best and all would be taken to these annual treats. And if you were incredibly lucky, (and well connected) you may have had an invite to several of the parties. It was all so exciting with lots of jelly and ice cream and orange squash. All the children would be on their best behaviour, although there was always one or two who didn’t quite keep up the good behaviour for the whole afternoon (and you know who you are!). Lots of games would be organised for the children including old favourites like musical chairs, statues or pass the parcel. Lots of shouting and

screaming, (and that was just from the adults!), and so much fun had by the children. And of course the high spot of the day was the moment when Santa Claus made a personal appearance to give out the presents. Every effort was made behind the scenes to stop Peter getting a Sindy Doll or Pauline receiving a Dan Dare Ray Gun. Some tears flowed if mistakes were made. Now it was very difficult for the real Santa to appear at all these events so it was not unusual for one of the ‘older’ members of staff to don the red suit and take on the role of ‘helper’. Desperately trying to disguise his voice when it was the turn of his own children or grandchildren to collect their presents it was not an easy thing to remain anonymous. I was a ‘helper’ on more than one occasion and I also remember once borrowing the Santa suit to visit my own grandchildren one Xmas Day when they were younger. Everything was going well and I fooled them both good and proper with lots of Yo-HoHoing. It was only when I went to leave that my son-in-law said to the children, “Say goodbye to Grandad…er, I mean Santa!” But to this day my grand-daughter thinks it was the real Santa that

called on her that day, and we have the video evidence of wonderment on her face to emphasise the magic of Christmas. I’m sure lasting memories survive from the parties held at Chevs, Risborough Furniture, the Church Halls, upstairs in the Fire Station and of course at the Legion. I have some very fond recollections from my own involvement with the Molins Christmas Parties, mainly held in the canteen at Saunderton and I will leave you with this story. One year I wrote a mini-pantomime which a group of us put on for the children. It was great fun and there was plenty of ‘He’s behind you!’ and all that sort of stuff. The children loved it. We hired a cow costume which two of the lads put on for their part in the panto. In the ‘rehearsals’ there was one priceless moment when the front end of the cow decided to jump over a chair, but he forgot to tell his brother in the back end. The clatter of chair, hooves, horns and udders was absolutely hilarious and I just wish it had happened in the live performance and that I had that on video too!

It is sad to think that many of today’s children will never experience the joy that was the annual Christmas party. I’m sure though, that many of you who read this will have your own memories of those wonderful events.

Email Mike at mpayne233@btopenworld.com or ring 01844 347511 if you have any memories of Christmas parties you would like to share, or if you would like to find out more about the Heritage Society. 38

Shoestring Productions A Date For Your Diary Shoestring Productions are proud to announce the dates for their forthcoming production of Peter Coke’s ‘Breath of Spring’. Performances will be held on Thursday 16th February 2012, Friday 17th February and Saturday 18th February 2012, 7.30pm, doors 7pm. There will also be a matinee performance on Saturday 18th February, 2.30pm, doors 2pm. Arguably Peter Coke’s most famous play ’Breath of Spring’ will keep the audience laughing from start to finish. It involves a lot of furs and a band of middle aged women, lead by an old dictatorial brigadier, who between them devise elaborate plots to move the said furs from their owners and give the profits to deserving charities. Hobbies and Crafts Exhibition Are you a collector, or do you have other interesting hobbies? If so, have you ever wanted a chance to show off your hobby to the public? Well, now you may be able to do just that. If there is enough interest I am planning to put on a Hobbies and Crafts exhibition on a Saturday around March or April next year in the Community Centre. I would like to hear from anyone, young or old, there is no age limit, who would like to take part, whether it be with a collection of stamps, medals, coins, ephemera, models, programmes, scrapbooks, teddy bears, autographs, frogs, doll’s houses or anything else for that matter. The exhibition is open to anyone and I am also looking for unusual collections, like thimbles, or novelty soaps or roadside cones etc! I would also like to hear from people whose craft is their hobby, whether it be sewing, carpentry, jewellery making, metalwork, knitting or anything else.

Letter from Father Christmas The Reindeer Runs are especially suitable for young children and they thoroughly enjoy getting involved but there is nothing more special for them at Christmas than to receive a letter from Father Christmas himself. IRGH is combining with the Pepper Foundation to offer everyone the chance to make Christmas magical for the children in their lives by arranging for a signed and personalised letter to arrive from the man in red at the North Pole. In return for a donation, there is a choice of letters tailored to different ages and orders can be placed online until Friday 9 December at www.irhh.org/xmasletter. All profits will be equally split between IRGH adult nursing teams and the Pepper children’s nursing team.

Risborough Rangers Football Club Giant Killers

Risborough Residents can be proud of their local football club Risborough Rangers who play in the south midlands football league (level 7) of the nonleague ladder. As they had a tremendous win in mid-October when they beat ex-conference club Aylesbury United in a 2nd round South Midlands challenge trophy 3-1 played at Leighton Town F.C. (the ducks shared home ground). The reds of Risboro thoroughly deserved the victory and the score line could have been even more emphatic, even the ducks officials said the best team won on the night as the hosts where shell shocked. The Gold Star Award was received from the Bucks Press for their achievement. Now Rangers move on to the 3rd round with another attractive match at home against high flying Leverstock Green who also play in the same south midlands premier league as the ducks. This game is being played on Saturday December 10th with a 1.30pm Kick Off, and rangers are hoping to go one step further this time. As last season in the same competition they beat 3 teams from a higher level and reached the semi-final going down 2 - 0 away at Chalfont St.Peter. The club welcome your support at their home ground of Windsors, Horsendon lane and the facilities would not look out of place at a higher level. If anyone would like an advertisement board at the ground this would also help to keep the club moving upwards and onwards, please log onto the club website www.risborough rangers.com. For any other info on fixtures there are posters up around town, and all match reports and up and coming games are in local papers The Bucks Herald and The Bucks Free Press (Stephen Burnett- RRFC Press Officer).
