Project Narrative The design is aimed at the Mexican agricultural migrant affordable housing case in California, USA, which must take into account many aspects of the dignity of immigrants and their economic situation.

I think the most important part is how to enable Mexican migrant workers to maintain their own unique lifestyle and cultural focus in the American life model.

So, public space will be the most important thing in my project. I consider the various social activity patterns of Mexicans. I want to create a space which can be defined by residents.

In the processes from undefinition to self-definition, the mobility and customization of shared space in the community can be improved. In this case, the community can be a safe and accommodating field for the migrant.

And I use containers to build up this project, because containers are cheaper and more efficient than other materials. On the other hand, when the containers are broken someday, it’s easy to be scrapped. The wreckage can be recycled almost one hundred percent.

Site Analysis Context Site The site is located in Visalia, California, USA. Visalia is in the center valley, which is in the Mediterranean climate region. Summer is the dry season, and winter is the wet season.

California is full of sunlight, and agriculture is prosperous. The opening space around the site used to be framland, but now has become building land.

The site is close to shopping centers, residential areas and parks, which has brought convenience to the site, and we can expect that might cause certain impact to the site in the future.

Site Composition The site is vulnerable to wildfires in summer and

Weather Visalia is mostly blown by west winds and ssouth winds all year round.

In winter, it mainly blows northwest winds. From

December-Febuary

June-August

spring to summer it blows southwest winds.

Almost all wind directions are avaliable in autumn.

Although the Santa Ana Winds (northeast winds) in autumn and winter dose not account for a high proportion of the aunnl average wind direction, the wildfire damage it brings will have a certain negative impact on the site.

Layout Concept Because the west side and north side of the site are close to the planned road, and considering the connection with the high density activity area, in terms of the site plan, the main entrances and main public spaces are placed in the southwest corner of the site, hoping N

to make the site have higher accessibility.

Design Idea - Undefinition and Self-definition Considering the social style of Mexican, they enjoyin various of activities during festivals, and in they daily life, they often have family fairs. Interaction is a important part in their life.

In order to let different activities and interaction opportunities have their own space to be hold, I set up sharing spaces between residential units. These spaces will be a chance for residents to decide how to use it and what kind of activities will occur.

Set up undefintion spaces for higher flexibility in customized using , when undefinition turning into self-definition, it means residents have right to build their ideal sharing space which epends on what kind of atmosphere they want to create.

Adventage of container houses AFFORDABLE Using containers for buildings is cheaper than normal building materials.

RECYCLABLE When the containers need to be exchanged, the scrap of the buildings can recycle.

REMOVABLE If one of the container is broken, we can fix it by remove it and change a new one.

SHORT WORKING HOURS The construction process is less than other method and eaiser to construct.

Design strategy By using containers as modules to stack, the intermediary space that may occur in the process of stacking containers. And I regarded as an undefined space.

In order to make it easier to convert undefined space into custom space, a framework system has been added to the stacking of containers. In the framework that is not filled with containers, residents can construct apublic space suitable for themselves, which can be changed in the form of outdoor, semi-outdoor or adding new containers.

Each unit has an outdoor corridor that can connect to self-definited spaces, and the corridors are connect to other units in the same time, to improve the opportunity to communicate.

Plant an oak forest on the north side of the site, the main purpose is to prevent wildfires damage,and provide large green open space in the same time.

Building Completed This is the image of the design when it completed.

When the residents are not move in yet, the vacancy is the undifinition public space.

Till the residents move in, they can decide how to use these space.

When Residents Move In Residents can discuss how to use their sharing public spaces.

They can decide to place a new container or just a simple frame which can grow some vines.

These spaces will have multiple ways to use, and much more convenient to use.

Outdoor living room or dining room. Share with your neighbors, eating can be a very important part of daliy interaction.

Anything could happen in these outdoor space. Daning, chating, playing or maybe just sleep under the trees.

Let's have a party day!

If you don't want to join any activity, you can just be observer on your balcony. You can see what people doing in the public space. This is also the best position for parents to watch their childern while they playing on the palyground.

The playground is connect with the self-definited space, from doorstep to grass field, play wherever you want!
