Student Groups Advocate for Reinstatement of Dismissed Ph.D. Student By PRANATHI POSA and KATE MABUS | News Editors UChicago Without Borders (UWB) and Phoenix Survivors Alliance (PSA) published a letter supporting the reinstatement of Zain Jamshaid, a former Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies (CMS). They are demanding that CMS allows
Jamshaid to complete his doctorate at UChicago. Jamshaid filed a Title IX case against a professor in his department in March 2020. CMS placed him on academic probation in May 2020, citing insufficient quality and progress on his dissertation.
The department dismissed him in December 2020. In an interview conducted by the maroon and the Hyde Park Herald in February of this year, Jamshaid characterized his dismissal as a retaliatory action in response to the complaint he filed. In response to being withdrawn from his program, Jamshaid filed a complaint with the Department of Ed-
ucation’s (E.D.) Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in late December 2020. Last year, while the E.D. was conducting a Title IX investigation into Jamshaid’s allegations, he raised $29,125 through a GoFundMe page that many activist groups on campus amplified. According to UWB and Jamshaid, part of these funds went toward CONTINUED ON PG. 2
Political Economy Ph.D. Program to Kick Off Next Fall By BASIL EGLI | Senior Reporter The Harris School of Public Policy and the Department of Political Science launched a new Ph.D. program in Political Economy, which is currently accepting applications for its first cohort that will matriculate in fall 2022. The program, while being facilitated by 22 faculty members from the Harris School and the Department of Political Science, will be distinct from Ph.D. programs in either school. The previous Political Economy track of the Harris Ph.D. in Public Policy Studies will be discontinued. The Ph.D. in Political Economy program is designed to be completed in five or six years. Requirements include comprehensive exams in formal theory, econometrics, and one subfield of American politics; a second-year research paper; and a final research dissertation. Program director Dr. Scott Gehlbach, currently a professor at the Harris School and in the political science department, described political economy as something understood from the

standpoints of both political science and economics. “One defines political economy in terms of methods. It’s the use of game theory and empirical methods of causal inference to answer important questions in politics.” Gehlbach also offered another shorthand definition for political economy: “The use of economic methods to study politics,” referring more to “the interplay of politics and economics.” Gehlbach emphasized the scope and size of the program, as well as its uniqueness: “You look at any other institution in North America at least, probably any other institution anywhere, you will not find 22 people with research interests in Political Economy. This is an incredible concentration of people in Chicago.” Some other universities do offer similar programs though. Gehlbach mentioned that both Princeton University and Stanford’s business school offer doctorates in Political Economy, but he remained confident that the program would offer its graduates notable opportunities. “We’re training students to

gram, Gehlbach also said that students could expect “strong financial support” and that “stipends will be very competitive.”
