




Chicago, Ill. –Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White released the following statement announcing his support for proposed gun reform bill HB5855, the Protect Illinois Communities Act:
“I am proud to stand with Illinois lawmakers as they work to pass life-saving gun safety legislation to protect our communities. As a veteran, I am acutely aware that our streets should not be flooded with weapons appropriate for a warzone. While I respect the rights of responsible gun owners, guns are falling into the wrong hands far too often, especially guns that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. I urge legislators to come together and pass much needed reforms. It’s time to take action; the lives of Illinoisans depend on it.”
The Protect Illinois Communities Act, introduced by Rep. Bob Morgan earlier this month, includes legislation that would ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, facilitate better implementation and efficacy of Illinois’s Firearm Restraining Order (FRPO) law, raise the minimum age to obtain a FOID card to 21, and address illegal gun trafficking in the state.
A poll released by Everytown for Gun Safety last week demonstrated that these gun safety measures have widespread support across the state. Overall, 52% of Illinoisans believe gun laws in Illinois should be stronger, including nearly three quarters of Black voters and 56% of Hispanic voters. A ban on assault weapons has the support of 58% of Illinoisans and two-thirds of voters support increasing the minimum age to obtain a FOID card from 18 to 21.

Brown believes serving as a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner is a way for her to turn her pain into purpose and a way to look at giving a voice to Black and Brown communities.
“While MWRD, of course, wasn’t responsible for this illness, it just gave me an opportunity to pull the bandage off some of the environmental injustices and risk factors that we’re seeing in communities of color,” she said.
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District was created in 1889 by the Illinois General Assembly. It is a special service agency that is responsible for processing the wastewater and all of the stormwater in Cook County. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioners are elected at-large and set policy for the agency. There are nine Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioners that serve County-wide. Every two years, three Commissioners are elected for six year terms.
In her professional career, Brown has spent the last 20 years working in non-profit organizations, which include the American Bar Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, and she is the Senior Director of Governance and Operations with the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Those experiences have enabled her to work closely with board of directors
of nonprofit organizations and CEOs to create boards. She also knows how to govern. Brown also serves as Clerk for the Village of Matteson, a position she has held for five years.

Brown is also crafting her plan for her first 100 days in office. She wants to do a listening tour to connect with stakeholders, which includes Constituents, Trustees and Mayors, especially of towns where there have been water issues, as well as other Elected Officials.
“We’re making those initial contacts with stakeholders in those communities to partner to see how MWRD can help them, provide resources and also to listen to see what are some of the things they want from the agency to support them, as well,” she said.
Brown is very excited to have a seat at the table. She is looking forward to being part of some of the committees within the Board, including the Affirmative Action and Public Health and Awareness committees.

Cook County, Ill. – Donna Miller is joining a select group of county elected officials as part of the National Association of Counties’ County Officials advancing Racial Equity (CORE) in Justice Network for their commitment to identifying and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in the local criminal legal system.
Donna Miller has led Cook County in efforts to understand disparities within the local criminal legal system and support programs, practices, funding and policies to advance racial equity. Their continued commitment helps improve outcomes for all community members, enhance public safety and ensure all residents have an opportunity to thrive.
As a participant of the CORE Justice Network, Donna Miller will engage with fellow elected officials from across the country who are building similar efforts in their jurisdictions. SUMMIT, Ill. – In partnership with the Village of Summit, the National Alliance on Mental Illness Metro Suburban (NAMI Metro Suburban) and BEDS Plus Care held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the grand opening of two new community resources focused on expanding mental and physical health care services in the Summit, Berwyn, Justice, and Cicero communities. The ceremony was held at NAMI Metro Suburban’s new Individual Placement and Support (IPS) facility and also commemorated the grand opening of BEDS Plus Care’s new Linda Sokol Francis Summit Service Center which will provide interim housing for homeless individuals as they heal from medical ailments.
“The last few years have been extremely challenging for all of us, but even more so for our young people and community members experiencing mental health conditions or homelessness,” said Sergio Rodriguez, Mayor of the Village of Summit. “We are so grateful that NAMI Metro Suburban and BEDS Plus Care have made this commitment to further cement their impact in Summit and provide innovative and impactful services for those in need.”
NAMI Metro Suburban expands its successful Individual Placement and Support employment program through the new physical location right next to its Summit Living Room. CHICAGO — Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) joined local officials and community leaders to celebrate the completion of the Jane Byrne Interchange reconstruction, a multiyear effort to modernize a key gateway into downtown Chicago and a critical transportation hub for the region and entire Midwest. One of the biggest projects in state history, the new-andimproved Jane Byrne Interchange eliminates a notorious national bottleneck and improves safety, efficiency, and mobility across multiple modes of transportation while better connecting people and jobs throughout the Chicago area.
“Today, I’m proud to announce the reconstruction of the Jane Byrne Interchange is finally completed,” said Governor JB Pritzker.
The $806.4 million project is the first major rehabilitation of the Jane Byrne since it was originally constructed more than 60
years ago. The final pieces of the project will conclude this week, weather permitting, with the opening of a second lane on the ramps connecting the inbound Eisenhower to the outbound Kennedy and Dan Ryan as well as the ramps connecting Jackson Boulevard and Adams Street to the outbound Kennedy. A fourth lane on the Dan Ryan and Kennedy lanes through the interchange also are due to open tahis week.
The finished product is predicted to result in a 50% reduction in vehicle delays, saving motorists an annual 5 million hours previously spent sitting in traffic and $185 million in productivity. Vehicle emissions are anticipated to reduce by a third, with annual gas consumption decreasing by 1.6 million gallons a year. Crashes are predicted to go down 25%.
A tri-level interchange situated between the city’s central business district, the University of Illinois Chicago campus, and the vibrant Greektown neighborhood, the Jane Byrne connects travelers from the Kennedy and Dan Ryan expressways (Interstate 90/94) and the Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290) with the principal route in and out of Chicago in Ida B. Wells Drive. The interchange also serves as a local travel corridor for businesses, residences and other attractions via neighborhood streets, the Chicago Transit Authority and bike and pedestrian accommodations.
Named after Jane Byrne to honor the former Chicago mayor and the first woman elected to lead a major American city, the interchange serves almost 400,000 vehicles a day, one out of four of those being trucks. Prior to its reconstruction, the interchange
struggled to perform under its original 1958 design, resulting in congestion for the majority of the day and frequent unsafe conditions. The American Transportation Research Institute and the Federal Highway Administration at one point rated the interchange the country’s No. 1 bottleneck for freight.
Construction started on the new Jane Byrne in 2013 with the Morgan Street bridge, the first of 10 bridges carrying local traffic that needed to be rebuilt to accommodate the interchange’s reconfigured footprint. To keep the interchange open to traffic throughout construction, the project was separated into 35 separate pieces and contracts to best manage sequencing and staging.
The project used approximately 52 million pounds of street, the equivalent of 2.5 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower, as well as 2,100 miles of rebar, the distance between Chicago and San Francisco. More than 223,000 cubic yards of concrete were required, which would fill 25,000 trucks. Installed were 12 miles of storm sewer, enough to connect Wrigley Field and O’Hare International Airport. Motorists should still expect occasional, temporary lane closures in the coming weeks to complete miscellaneous electrical work and other punch list items. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and remain alert for workers and equipment. Painting of the Ida B. Wells Drive bridge and landscaping of the interchange area will start in the spring with minimal traffic impacts.

BANNOCKBURN, Ill. ¬— Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) has once again spread joy and giving this holiday season throughout the Chicago area.
GLCU hosted a toy drive in partnership with Alpha Media to benefit the U.S. Marine Corp.’s Toys-For-Tots. Drop off bins were placed at all 13 GLCU branches as well as corporate headquarters and their member contact center.
In addition to collecting toys at their branches, GLCU hosted two community events to encourage final donations from the community and their southern and northern branches.
In the south, GLCU invited the local community to their Bolingbrook branch. Patrons were invited to drop off toys, hangout with the DJ’s and hosts of Star 96.7, enjoy hot cocoa and donuts from Jester Food Truck and meet some of the Marines who help make these toy drives possible.
Up north, GLCU teamed up with Alpha Media outside their broadcast station in Gurnee Mills Mall. With the
help of the Marines, 95 WIIL Rock and 102.3 XLC, GLCU was able to host a drive-up donation, where all donations were conveniently taken directly from vehicles.
Throughout these final collection efforts, GLCU and Alpha Media were able to collect over two trucks full of donations.

State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. was recently elected to serve as the National ViceChair of the Council of State Governments.

CHICAGO – ComEd leaders joined IBEW Local 15 and members of the community to recognize 121 local residents as they graduated from training programs required to become full-time lineworkers with ComEd. Graduation events held by the company today recognized newly hired pre-apprentices now on track to begin an overhead apprenticeship school in 2023. This on-the-job training is a requirement for performing the role of a lineworker, a key role helping to ensure reliable power is safely delivered to communities across northern Illinois.
This graduation represents one of the largest overhead classes in recent history, as ComEd has expanded investments in training and committed to hire hundreds of additional entry-level craft workers in the next couple of
years to prepare for the state’s clean energy transition.

To prep are to meet these demands, ComEd has been working to expand the reach of its career readiness programs, including hosting more frequent climb clinics, expanding test prep, and boosting capacity of its apprenticeship schools to reach more residents interested in careers in utilities. As a result, ComEd has nearly doubled participation in the overhead apprenticeship program in the past two years.
Since announcing it would expand craft hiring earlier this year, ComEd has extended hiring offers to over 200 candidates for roles including overhead helpers, as well as construction workers. As interest in craft careers at ComEd has increased, so too has diversity: More than 75 percent of applications to craft roles in 2022 were for minority candidates, and 15 percent for women. This record level of diversity follows on efforts by the company to bolster outreach and recruitment in communities across the service territory, and to reduce barriers to help more qualified applicants get the training they need to compete for these new careers.

Otherwise known as respiratory syncytial virus, RSV is a virus that causes infections in the lungs and respiratory tract. With similar symptoms as a cold, if you are diagnosed with RSV you may experience symptoms such as sore throats, sneezing, low fever, dry cough and headaches.

This initiative is aimed at increasing access to COVID-19 treatment, with a focus on reaching those in socially vulnerable or medically underserved areas at a time when COVID-19 cases are beginning to rise again across the United States. According to Walgreens COVID-19 Index data, overall positivity rates reached 36 percent this week. This steady rise in cases reinforces the critical need for access to life-saving treatments.

(StatePoint) While you may want to tone your abs, glutes and triceps in the new year, there’s one often-overlooked area of the body that deserves your attention too: your feet!
“A lot of people hit the gym or dust off their home exercise equipment in January,” says Danielle Butto, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “But without proper precautions, a new exercise routine can cause foot and ankle injuries that could sideline you just as you’re hitting your stride.”
According to ACFAS, here’s what to know as you follow through on your resolution to get fit:
• Don’t play through the pain of an ankle sprain. Avoiding treatment can not only cause further damage to the ligaments which may take much longer to heal or possibly require surgery, but you may be overlooking a more serious injury -- a stress fracture.
• A stress fracture may feel like an ankle sprain at first, but you’ll notice additional warning signs, such as swelling without bruising, and pain even during normal activities or when touching the area. If you have any of these symptoms, have your foot and ankle evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon as soon as possible.
• Pain or swelling around your Achilles tendon after a workout could be indications of Achilles tendonitis. Untreated, a stretched or strained Achilles tendon may worsen over time, leading to stiffness and fatigue in your injured leg. Worse yet, untreated Achilles tendonitis could result in a ruptured tendon requiring surgery and a rehabilitation of several months.
• Heel pain that lasts for more than a day or two, or worsens when you stand after sitting for an extended amount of time, may be plantar fasciitis. This common condition is a result of inflammation of the tissue extending from your heel to your toes. If caught early, your foot and ankle surgeon can recommend athome conditioning. In late stages, plantar fasciitis is harder to treat and takes longer to resolve.
The good news? Many injuries are preventable. Foot and ankle surgeons offer five tips to help you keep your feet and ankles healthy:
1. Be smart. Consider consulting a personal trainer at first to ensure you’re
practicing good form, and to increase the duration and intensity of your workouts gradually and safely.
2. Stretch. Incorporate mobility and stretching into your fitness regimen, particularly before and after workouts.
3. Be footwear aware. Wear properly-fitting athletic shoes that support the arch of the foot, provide heel cushioning and are designed for the exercise in which you’re engaged. These measures can help you avoid plantar fasciitis and neuromas. Wear cotton or nonslip socks to help prevent painful blisters, which can become infected and cause more serious issues, especially if you have diabetes.
4. Guard against bacteria. Sweaty shoes, public showers, exercise equipment and the pool deck are breeding grounds for fungus, viruses and bacteria. Wear water shoes in public areas, and after workouts, and get your feet clean and dry quickly.
5. Book an appointment. Foot and ankle pain isn’t normal. It signals a problem that needs to be evaluated, diagnosed and treated by a specialist who fully understands this part of the body. To find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, use the “Find a Physician” search tool at FootHealthFacts.org.
“When you exercise, your feet and ankles do a ton of work holding you up and absorbing the shock of each step you take,” says Dr. Butto. “So, as you kick off your new fitness routine, don’t forget to protect them.”
