Kia S. Smith founded the South Chicago Dance Theatre in 2017, because she was really proud of her upbringing on the South side. She always wanted to be a dancer and have a dance company. She went to college and afterwards pursued a career in dance.

GRASSE ADVANCES BILLS TARGETING PUBLIC HEALTH TO HOUSE FLOOR
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Working to improve public health and alleviate bureaucratic burdens, state Rep. Nicolle Grasse, D-Arlington Heights, passed a series of measures out of House committees last week addressing several challenges in healthcare.
“These measures take meaningful steps to expand access, improve patient care, and strengthen accountability in our healthcare system,” said Grasse. “By addressing critical gaps, we’re ensuring better outcomes for those who need it the most.”
Notably, Grasse passed House Bill 2493 out of its committee requiring county clerks to create a remote marriage application process, allowing those in hospice or impaired by disability to go through the marriage application process with their partner in a remote setting.
Aiming to expand coverage and improve healthcare efficiencies, Grasse’s House Bill 3699 requires insurance to start covering any medically necessary prescribed vitamins. Additionally Grasse garnered the votes to pass House Bill 2371, streamlining reimbursement and removing out of pocket costs for dental patients. And, Grasse’s House Bill 3849 authorizes hospice or home health service employees to deliver a patient’s prescription order or controlled substance — ensuring essential medications are delivered faster.
To increase accountability in healthcare, Grasse’s House Bill 1712 further protects patients’ end of life medical preferences, requiring the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to establish clear oversight and uniform training to ensure adherence to POLST forms — documents that guide emergency and long-term care for patients.
Plus, Grasse’s House Bill 2397 responds to the rising number of deaths of incarcerated elderly by requiring IDOC to publicly report on Hospice and Palliative Care, giving the legislature insight into the true state of hospice care in correctional facilities. Similarly, House Bill 2877 would require the Hospice and Palliative Care Advisory Board to inform the legislature on the state of care for those experiencing a serious or life-limiting illness, in order to provide actionable recommendations for state hospice and palliative standards.
“I’m thrilled to gain bipartisan support with many of these measures which will positively impact healthcare patients and providers,” said Grasse. “I look forward to bringing these in front of the House floor and getting smart pieces of policy across the finish line.”
AMMONS ADVANCES BILL PROTECTING LOCAL DRINKING WATER FROM UNDERGROUND CONTAMINATION
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Working toward protecting clean water access as Chair of the Energy & Environment Committee, state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, has successfully passed a measure protecting critical sources of drinking water like the Mahomet Aquifer from pollution by banning carbon sequestration — a process involving injecting captured carbon underground — in areas that overlie or are near sole-source aquifers.
“I fought for a sole source designation for the Mahomet Aquifer in 2015, and I’m standing up again to protect over 15 counties that count on this aquifer’s safe drinking water,” said Ammons. “By banning carbon sequestration in areas with only one aquifer, we ensure these communities have clean water for generations to come.”
Sole-source aquifers are classified by the EPA as an underground water supply that provides at least 50% of its drinking water for its area and has no safe, alternative water source.
House Bill 3614 would amend the Environmental Protection Act by restricting carbon sequestration activity within a facility that is near sole-source aquifers, eliminating the risks of water pollution.
“We cannot afford to gamble with corporate interests when clean water for over a million Illinoisans is on the line,” said Ammons. “Carbon sequestration is damaging to communities with limited water sources, and it’s big business who’s taking home the extra cash. If we don’t put protections in place for carbon sequestration, counties will have no economic alternative for safe drinking water.”
House Bill 3614 passed out of the Energy & Environment Committee, and will be favorably reported to the House Floor for consideration.
South Chicago Dance Theatre Preparing For Its 8th Season
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
To celebrate the dance company’s eighth season, it will host its home concert in May. IN/WITHIN will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 3rd, at the Auditorium Theatre, located at 50 East Ida B. Wells Drive.
Smith said the concert is a dream come true for her, as the company’s founder and leader. Growing up in Chicago, she went to the Auditorium Theatre to watch other people perform. Now, the South Chicago Dance Theatre will perform there, and they just might inspire another aspiring performer to dream of being on that stage one day.
“It’s just really, really exciting for me and the dancers,” Smith said.
During the concert, South Chicago Dance Theatre will honor Frank Chaves, founder of River North Dance Chicago, with the Cultural Hero Award. South Chicago Dance Theatre has a work, Temporal Trance, in its repertoire, which was choreographed by Chaves.
“Frank is just a huge legacy in Chicago dance, who deserves to be celebrated, so we’re super excited to celebrate Frank,” Smith said.
Smith is also premiering her first contemporary dance theatre work. She described it as really humorous and the only work in South Chicago Dance Theatre’s repertoire that combines dance and theatre.
The South Chicago Dance Theatre has been busy performing internationally in Korea, Vietnam, and nationally in Laguna Beach, Calif. The dance company also had their Jacob’s Pillow debut. The renowned dance venue and school is located in Massachusetts, so it was an honor for South Chicago Dance Theatre to be invited to perform there.
In addition to performing, South Chicago Dance Theatre served about 8,000 students in Chicago Public Schools and other school districts offering dance and theatre classes. The dance company has also served senior citizens through a program at the Southeast Atlas Senior Center in South Shore offering free dance classes to seniors once a week.
“We’re really embedded in the community in Chicago, but our performances are a really big part of what we do,” Smith said.
Recently, South Chicago Dance Theatre hosted its 5th Annual South Chicago Dance Festival. Smith said she started the dance festival because she wanted an ongoing initiative that brought youth dance companies together annually, with the goal of having the young people in those companies engage with one another. The event was hosted at the South Shore

Young people who participate in the dance festival receive free workshops and classes with Chicago dance instructors and perform at the end of the festival. Smith said someone told her that each year the festival gets better and better, and groups look forward to the event each year.
“The kids are bringing their A game, because they know they’re going to South Chicago Dance Festival and it’s becoming so rooted in our community, which is so rewarding for me,” Smith said.

GRAMMY-nominated classical-meets-hip-hop duo Black Violin released their new single and video “Smoke.” Produced by Phil Beaudreau (Dr. Dre, Justin Bieber, The Game, Lalah Hathaway), the song is the second single released from their upcoming album Full Circle, set for release later this spring. “Nothing has ever been recorded like this song,” says Black Violin’s Kev Marcus. “There is no song in the history of songs that’s a viola solo like that. I watch a lot of Beat Bobby Flay, and the chefs are like, ‘This is me on a plate’—this is Wil on a track. It’s what the viola has always wanted, since the days of Bach, to be able to shine in a melodic, super-soulful way, and no one else in the world could make that song but us.”
Black Violin members Wil Baptiste and Kev Marcus met on the first day of orchestra class in 1996 at Dillard High School of the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. (Baptiste originally wanted to play saxophone in the band, but the orchestra teacher got him assigned to his class after winning a golf bet with the band instructor.) Classically trained by day, they faithfully put on their headphones and listened to the hottest rap records each night. They went to different colleges—Marcus attended Florida International University and Baptiste went to Florida State—but then reconvened, moved into an apartment together, and started trying to produce other musicians.

winning. They were approached by the manager of Alicia Keys, who asked them to perform with the singer at the Billboard Awards. Other offers followed—they toured with Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, opened for the Wu-Tang Clan, and worked with the likes of Alessia Cara, 2 Chainz, and Lil Wayne. All the while, Black Violin continued touring non-stop (playing as many as 200 shows a year) and released two independent, self-financed albums before putting out the acclaimed Stereotypes in 2016, followed by 2019’s Take the Stairs, which was nominated for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2020 GRAMMYs.
Black Violin has always been about taking things further, exceeding expectations, challenging conventions. The duo has steadily built a devoted following and a diverse touring base— culminating in such triumphs as two sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, and appearances on the Today Show, CBS Mornings, and PBS Newshour—while occupying a musical lane that’s entirely its own.
students throughout the year, including low-income and Title 1 schools, and adopted Bethune Elementary, in Florida’s Broward County (near where they grew up) to initiate an ongoing mentorship program. In 2019, the duo launched the Black Violin Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth by working with them in their communities to provide access to quality music programs that encourage creativity and innovation.

Op Ed: Black Press and Black Church Unity Targeting TARGET
BENJAMIN F CHAVIS JR.
For over 198 years the Black Press and the Black Church have joined together for causes of freedom, justice, equality, equity, and empowerment. Today more than ever before there is renewed urgency for the Black Church and the Black Press to publicly amplify our mutual interests to protect and maintain the hard-fought gains and progress that has been accomplished by African Americans in the last two centuries.
On the record, “We are not going back in America and nowhere else in the world in 2025.” We have already suffered too much from the vicious unprecedented genocide, terrorism, and crimes against humanity during the Transatlantic Slave Trade, global imperialism, racism, colonialism, neocolonialism, reconstruction and Jim Crow, mass incarceration, and present day repressive policies and Executives Orders in an attempt to erase our history and legacy with libelous actions and falsehoods.
The prophetic voice of the Black Church continues to resonate with historic and contemporary inspiration and power. Together we are resolutely de -
manding respect from Target and those companies that make billions of dollars from our consumership.
We are not begging. We are demanding respect and an equitable business relationship with Target and corporate America. From executive decision makers to marketing and promotions account managers, to Human Resources directors, and to the shareholders of the companies, we demand economic restoration and respect.
We salute the bold leadership of The Reverend Jamal Harrison Bryant and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta and other Black Church leaders across the nation who are standing up and preaching liberation theology.
TARGET will continue to be our target. We in the Black Press of America will continue our public education and selective buying campaign. No respect, no buying. No justice, no peace. May God continue to bless the Black Church and the Black Press.
Rev. Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. is President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and BlackPressUSA

Get Your House In Order
I am not a betting woman, but I bet that those of you reading this column now—and have read it before—DO NOT have an estate plan. I am so confident in this that I’d be willing to put up a wager for everyone who presents their estate plan to me.
Why don’t more people, especially Black folks, have estate plans?
From my experience, the reasons are clear:
1. They don’t believe they need one.
2 They don’t want to contemplate the inevitable.
3. They believe an estate plan is only for when you die.
4. They believe that an estate plan is cost prohibitive.
None of these are true.

Bren Sheriff
An estate plan isn’t solely about distributing your assets after you pass. It’s also about protecting your wishes and ensuring a plan of care should you become incapable of making decisions for yourself. When done correctly, an estate plan provides both financial security and peace of mind—not just for you, but for your loved ones.
I once worked with two families in similar situations. One had a matriarch who had taken the time to create an estate plan, ensuring that her wishes were clear. The transition of her assets and care was seamless, reducing stress for everyone involved. The other family, however, had no such plan in place. What followed was years of confusion, legal battles, and fractured relationships. One family preserved their legacy with dignity, while the other endured unnecessary hardship.
People often ask me: What’s the biggest mistake in estate planning? The answer is simple. The biggest mistake is not having an estate plan at all. No matter your age or financial status, you need one. The best way to avoid this mistake is simply- JUST DO IT.
Don’t leave your family guessing. Make the decision today to protect your legacy. Will your estate plan be perfect? Probably not—what in life is? But families with a plan in place experience far less stress than those forced to navigate the chaos of an unplanned estate. A word to the wise is sufficient. Again - JUST DO IT!
Bye for now,
Bren

Slam Dunk Strategies for Reducing Your Debt
(StatePoint) Is mounting debt causing you stress? If so, you’re not alone. Average consumer debt is on the rise in the United States.
To help you create a winning financial game plan, Experian is offering tried-and-true money management strategies, along with tips for taking advantage of new tools to reduce your spending.
Get a complete picture. Do a 360-degree assessment of how much you owe, tallying up any loans, credit cards or installment debts you might have. As part of this assessment, you can check your Experian credit report for free at www.Experian.com.
Review your budget. Doing so will help you hone in on how much money you can allocate to paying off debt and help you avoid impulse spending or indulging in extras that might set you back financially. Choose a repayment strategy. Find a repayment strategy that works best for you and stick to it. This could mean prioritizing debt with the highest interest rate, the debt with the smallest balance, or the debt with the highest credit utilization. However you go about it, the important thing is to keep tabs on your progress and stay the course until your debt is paid off. Keep it up. Continue to practice good financial habits, like regularly checking your credit report and credit score, spending within your means, and paying your bills on time to avoid taking on additional debt.
Use tech tools. Easy tools can help you cut out unnecessary spending. For example, the Experian app has a subscription cancellation feature that does the work of tracking and cancelling subscriptions for you. Experian data shows that consumers have about four subscriptions on average, totaling almost $1,000 per year in potentially unused expenses. With over 200 subscriptions eligible for cancellation through the app in categories like streaming services, meal kits and entertainment, that could spell big savings. Access the tool as part of a paid Experian membership. To get started with Experian’s subscription cancellation feature and other tools, download the iOS or Android app or visit www.experian.com.
“It’s easy for subscriptions to add up and become costly expenses. While tracking them down can be overwhelming, you don’t have to do it alone,” said Rod Griffin, senior director of Consumer Education and Advocacy for Experian.
In addition to the app, as well

as other financial resources and tools available to help consumers reach their financial goals, Experian is active in initiatives to help with consumers’ financial health. The company is relieving $5 million of consumer debt among more than 5,000 families in Louisiana. Additionally, Experian is teaming up with Flau’jae Johnson, a junior guard for the Louisiana State University women’s basketball team, to champion the program and financial empowerment. With 69% of college basketball fans holding debt and 49% saying they are stressed financially, according to an Experian survey, sports fans and all consumers can use extra support to manage their finances.
Reigning in spending and getting a handle on debt don’t have to be insurmountable goals. By leaning on available resources, you can become the finan-
cial champion of your future. Experian app subscription cancellation feature disclosure: Results will vary. Not all subscriptions are eligible, savings are not guaranteed, and some may not see savings. Experian members for whom Experian canceled at least one subscription averaged $306 a year of anticipated savings. Available with eligible paid memberships and requires connecting payment account(s) to Experian account. Debt relief initiative disclosure: Experian membership not required. ForgiveCo is settling one outstanding account in full for each beneficiary and not all accounts are the same size. Beneficiaries are randomly selected from the debt pool. For more information go to experian.com/relief or forgiveco.com.
