North Star Credit Union Makes Award-Winning

Janice Garth

Financial Literacy Program Free for Local Classrooms Local students are getting a free education in how to manage their money. NorthStar Credit Union is working with Banzai, a national award-winning financial literacy program, to make the curriculum available to 2 high schools in District 204 completely free. “Banzai is a web-based financial literacy program. Kids have their own bank accounts, and they work through assignments that are based on real life,” Morgan Vandagriff, co-founder of Banzai, said. “But because NorthStar Credit Union is sponsoring it, local schools get it for free. More than ever, it’s important that kids develop sound financial skills to prepare them for the real world. NorthStar Credit Union realizes that, and they’re doing something about it.” NorthStar Credit Union has offered time, money, industry experience, and a variety of credit union resources to help local schools teach personal finance in the classroom. Students using the program are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay bills and balance a budget – but it’s not always easy. Students must learn to manage unexpected expenses such as parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. The educational program also introduces students to auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs, savings and more. Banzai is an interactive, online program supplemented by printed workbooks which aligns with state curriculum requirements for personal finance education. It has become the largest program of its kind, servicing more than 30,000 teachers and available in all 50 states. Teachers interested in using the Banzai program can visit northstarcu.teachbanzai.com or call 888-8-BANZAI.

Antibiotics – You Don’t Always Need Them

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently recognized U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, November 13-19, 2017, to help decrease the misuse of antibiotics and protect people from the dangers of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Antibiotics do NOT cure viral infections such as colds, flu, most sore throats, most coughs and bronchitis, many sinus infections, and many ear infections. According to the CDC, each year in the United States at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections. IDNR Warns Landowners to Check the Value of Their Trees

Illinois forest landowners stand to be paid record-high prices for their mature forest trees and logs on farm and forest holdings, thanks to outstanding market prices for hardwood logs and lumber. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Forest Resources is urging forest landowners to consult with a professional forester before agreeing to sell. “Many landowners don’t realize the full market value of their forest trees and because of it, they are often paid only 10 to 30 cents on the dollar. Some of them are never paid at all,” said Paul Deizman, IDNR Forest Inventory, Utilization and Marketing manager. “Though most timber buyers, logging companies, and other forest operators doing business in Illinois are legitimate, some unscrupulous operators may try to take advantage of landowners, especially during times of high timber prices. Bad deals are often initiated directly with unsuspecting landowners at their front door, by mail, or by attractive advertising.” IDNR foresters want forest landowners to do some homework and exercise caution before agreeing to any timber offer. The IDNR maintains a “Call Before You Cut” toll-free hotline through which landowners can discuss timber and forest management with IDNR Division of Forest Resources personnel, who are available to offer the best advice on how to proceed when selling timber. The hotline number is 1-888-244-1706.

Chris Kennedy received the endorsement recently of Lori E. Lightfoot, chair of the Police Accountability Task Force and leading advocate for police reform and accountability. “Lori’s long been a champion of fairness and equality, and the city of Chicago is a better place because of her leadership. Lori fearlessly speaks truth to power and, with a government beholden to political insiders, her courage is critical to the future of Chicago,” Kennedy said. “We are so grateful for her endorsement of our grassroots campaign to bring fundamental change to Illinois.” The campaign released a video endorsement from Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and partner at a Chicago law firm, stating the following: “They’re two men of tremendous integrity. I think their track record; their experiences really show and demonstrate that. They recognize that our state is fundamentally going in the wrong direction. As a resident of Chicago, where we’ve seen our violence escalate to 1990 levels, Chris is the only candidate who is talking about violence, obviously has a personal history with it, and understands the devastating ripple effects that violence can have on individuals, families and communities.”

Holiday Heartburn or Something More?

GERD Awareness Week Is Recognized in November MILWAUKEE -- The holiday meal has been consumed, the plates cleared away, and then you feel it – that all-too-familiar burning sensation of heartburn. While just about everyone experiences episodes of heartburn or “indigestion” from time to time, heartburn that occurs more than once a week, becomes more severe, or occurs at night and wakes you from sleep may indicate something more. An underlying condition such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) could be the cause. GERD is a long-term condition that occurs when stomach contents repeatedly flow backward (or reflux) into the esophagus (food tube). Over time this can irritate the lining of the esophagus, causing uncomfortable symptoms. While most people with GERD have mild symptoms, left untreated, repeated reflux and irritation of the tissue of the esophagus can lead to complications such as tissue damage or difficulty swallowing. “It is important to see your doctor for an accurate diagnosis when you have signs and symptoms of GERD,” said Ceciel T. Rooker, Executive Director of the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD). “Your healthcare provider can then work with you to develop a treatment plan to help best manage your symptoms.” To help you avoid heartburn from making an unwanted appearance this holiday season, IFFGD offers the following five tips: Schedule an earlier meal. Digestion increases the amount of gastric acid naturally present in the stomach. And, a reclined position can allow stomach

contents to reflux up the esophagus more easily. Occurring together, these are a recipe for reflux. While timing can vary from person to person, it is best not to eat within three or four hours of bedtime. Steer clear of known “problem foods.” Coming up with a list of foods to avoid involves experimenting to discover your triggers, as problem foods may differ from person to person. However, many people find that fats, onions, tomatoes and tomato products, chocolate, peppermint, and caffeine-containing foods and beverages to be particularly troublesome. Use smaller plates. Eating large meals can trigger symptoms, so try smaller meals spread throughout the day. Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Both alcohol and tobacco are known irritants and can trigger reflux symptoms. Cut back on consumption or avoid completely to reduce reflux. Keep good posture during and after the meal. Sitting up while eating and avoiding lying flat for a minimum of two hours after a meal may help prevent symptoms. Additionally, standing up and walking around after eating a meal helps encourage gastric juices to flow in the right direction. “Persistent or repeated heartburn can signal that it’s time to talk to your doctor,” said Rooker. “GERD is more than simple heartburn. If you suspect that you may have GERD, schedule an appointment with a healthcare professional.” GERD Awareness Week is November 19 – 25, 2017 and takes place each year during the week of Thanksgiving. Learn more about GERD on IFFGD’s dedicated website: www.aboutGERD.org.

Catalyst CEO Champions For Change Companies Outperform The S&P 500 In Advancing Women Into Leadership Catalyst, a global nonprofit that helps build workplaces that work for women, recently released data showing that as a group Catalyst CEO Champions For Change (Catalyst Champion) companies are outperforming their peers on advancing women into leadership. The report, Everyday Heroes: Catalyst CEO Champions For Change, reveals that in this collective of 50+ organizations that have taken the Catalyst pledge to accelerate change, women already hold more positions across the leadership pipeline. Key findings: Catalyst Champion companies outperform the S&P 500 in advancing women into leadership: board seats (29.0% Catalyst Champion vs. 21.2% S&P 500), executive/senior-level positions (27.9% Catalyst Champion vs. 26.5% S&P 500) and first-/mid-level positions (38.4% Catalyst Champion vs. 36.9% S&P 500). Catalyst Champion companies outperform their peers in advancing women of color into leadership: board seats (6.0% Catalyst Champion vs. 3.8% Fortune 500; Note: S&P 500 data

was not available here so F500 data was used instead), executive/ senior-level positions (5.2% Catalyst Champion vs. 4.7% S&P 500) and first-/mid-level positions (11.3% Catalyst Champion vs. 10.5% S&P 500). “As part of the Catalyst Champions pledge, these companies are sharing data on women in their workplaces so we can collectively track our progress. These CEOs are already leaders in gender inclusion and diversity. And they are holding themselves publicly accountable for doing even more and inspiring global change for women at work at a time when it is urgently needed,” said Deborah Gillis, President and CEO, Catalyst. In some cases, the group of Catalyst Champion companies is greatly outperforming the S&P 500. In other categories it looks like a relatively small percentage difference. But even small progress can have a large impact. Catalyst’s analysis shows that improving the total number of women in leadership by 1% across all S&P 500 companies would result in 12,000 more women in these roles. “Increasing the number of women in leadership isn’t a new

issue, but it’s still very much a current challenge. The reality is that we just aren’t moving fast enough. It’s one thing to say that we’re dedicated and it’s another to actually show progress,” said Cathy Engelbert, Deloitte CEO and incoming Catalyst Chair. “That’s why I’m so proud of the Catalyst CEO Champions For Change initiative, the dedication to showing real results, and the findings of this first report after the launch which show that we really are making an impact that matters by making women’s advancement a priority.” “Why is this group of companies doing better? Because they deliberately step up and show up on gender and diversity issues day after day. When something is on the CEO’s agenda, when something is baked into business units and included in success metrics it gets attention, resources, and, most importantly, action. Catalyst Champion CEOs are committed to making these issues a priority and their efforts are getting results—the data shows it. We know there is much more work to do together but we are starting from a good place to drive positive change,” said Gillis. Moving forward, Catalyst will continue to track and report collective progress on the pledge. Catalyst will also share success stories about what’s driving positive change so that other companies can learn and be inspired to join the movement building workplaces that work for women.

I DIE DAILY

Have you ever been in the headspace where you thought to yourself, “Is this all that life has for me?” If you have or even if you are there right now, you may be ready to get more out of yourself than you ever thought possible? God has given you a gift and that gift is His greatness. However, in order to access it, we must think in alignment with Him and remember, “As we think in the heart, so are we” Proverbs 23:7. One of the ways we think in alignment is by refusing to justify or rationalize our poor decisions. Don’t make excuses make improvements. Change your mind and open up new possibilities to new experiences. Release the situations that no longer serve you, so that you can get into the situations that are meant to bless you. Paul wrote to the church in Rome, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.” The way we think becomes the process by which we handle ideas and create patterns in our life. Your thoughts become words and your words become actions. Accordingly, if you want to change your actions, begin by changing the way you think and speak. These subtle habits form the foundation upon which you build the new you. Paul’s insights remind us that we must die daily. What old ways of thinking and being do you need to die to? What unproductive relationships is it time to change your thinking on so that you can be free to live more creatively? What old habits and behaviors have outlived their usefulness to you? What thoughts are you holding that are producing undesirable experiences in your life? What are you willing to release in order to live out of the gifts God has given you? Repetition is a convincing argument. Dying daily to the irrelevant and unproductive gives us license to live more fully into the new. New wine calls for new wine skins. After releasing, we must diligently guard our hearts because this becomes the wellspring of our many issues. God placed His greatness inside of you because you can be trusted to do something great with it. Set your priorities in God then think your thoughts after him. How to make the most of your ride (BPT) - New to ridesharing? So are most people, both drivers and passengers alike. Ridesharing matches you with a nearby driver who will pick you up and take you where you need to go. Calling a ride is as easy as opening up a ridesharing app and tapping a button; a driver will then arrive within minutes. By using a ridesharing service, you can help your community by reducing traffic, connecting with your neighbors, and keeping your local economy strong. One major player is Lyft, the fastest-growing on-demand transportation service in the U.S., covering 94 percent of the U.S. population. Once you have the app downloaded, all you need to do is enter a prepayment method, designate your pickup and dropoff location, and you’re set! In just a few minutes your driver will be at your location ready to go. The app allows you to track the location of your driver so you will always know exactly when to be ready, and if you can’t find your driver you can easily send them a text or give them a call. Riding shotgun 1 Front seat or backseat? That is entirely up to you!

Looking to be social and connect with your driver a little more? The front seat is the place for you. If you prefer a little more solitude, then the backseat might be best. There isn’t a wrong answer - just go with whatever feels right. Here is an easy conversation starter: Drivers often make excellent recommendations if you’re visiting a new city. As a local, they know the hot spots best. Feeling TIPsy? - After a night of socializing, you should rely on ridesharing to get you home safely. And if your driver provided stellar service, got you to your destination in record time or had a sick ride, you might want to tip them

2

for their hard work. Tipping is always optional but always appreciated. Safety first - Is 3 ridesharing safe? Yes! Ridesharing is a safe and

reliable way to get from point A to B with a little help from someone in your community. In fact, 87 percent of Lyft drivers have given a ride to a neighbor. Good thing that companies across the industry are dedicated to safety. For instance, Lyft ensures that every driver is screened before they’re permitted to drive on their platform, starting with professional third-party background and DMV checks. In addition to the background check, Lyft has a dedicated Trust and Safety team on call 24/7. Ride your way 4 - You have another wedding next weekend and

you want to arrive in style, but you also want to save a little money on the ride home. Are there options in ridesharing that cover both types of service? Yes! Across the ridesharing industry there are a wide range of options to suit a wide range of needs. If you’re looking to save some money, try sharing your ride with someone else. If you have a special date or an important meeting, you can splurge for a luxury black car. Best of both 5 worlds - If you happen to have a qualifying

four-door car, you are totally able to use your free time and

spare seats to make some extra cash. Driving on a platform like Lyft is great because you can seamlessly switch between rider and driver. Going to that hip area of town that never has parking? Call a ridesharing service! Have a few hours to spare because your mom’s flight is delayed? Open the driver app and make the most of that time.
