MANLEY BILL REFINES ACCOUNTING LICENSURE, EXPANDS PATHWAYS FOR PROFESSIONALS
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Working to expand pathways for certified public accountants (CPAs) to work in Illinois, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is sponsoring a bill that would add two additional methods for CPAs to gain licensure and make it easier for non-residents to provide CPA services in the state.
“With tax season upon us, this bill fixes some of the barriers for residents that want to become a CPA and establishes a pathway for current CPAs that want to work in Illinois — licensure stalls, red-tape, and antiquated requirements,” said Manley. “This is a practical, no-fuss solution that lowers barriers to CPA license access to address the profession’s pipeline crisis and workforce shortage by one, encouraging out-of-state accountants in good standing to come practice in Illinois, and two, allowing qualified accounting graduates who have passed the CPA exam to become licensed.”
Manley recently filed House Bill 2459, which would amend the Illinois Public Accounting Act by carving two new pathways for accounting professionals without disturbing the current path to licensure, allowing CPA applicants to become licensed with:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting, at least two years of experience, and the passage of the CPA exam; or
A bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree with 30 hours of accounting concentration, at least one year of experience, and passage of the CPA exam.
“By putting two new licensure methods on the table for our accounting professionals, we can ease burdens around tax season where so many of our residents request accounting services by slashing the red tape that’s kept more than qualified individuals from practicing and serving our state.”
House Bill 2459 is currently under consideration by the Financial Institution and Licenses Committee.

CHICAGO — More than 90 Chicago Public Schools students from high schools across Chicago stepped into the shoes of sports executives showcasing their strategic thinking and problem-solving skills while presenting their final projects for Cubs Charities’ Careers As Sports Executives (CASE) Study Program. The event marked the culmination of the six-week program, which immerses students in the business of sports while equipping them with real-world career skills.
“The CASE program is an incredible opportunity to discover your interests and explore potential career paths. It has given me valuable insight into my future and helped me think more deeply about where I want to end up in life,” said Sophia Hernandez, student of ITW David Speer Academy, CASE program participant and Cubs Nike RBI player.
The program led off with a networking event at the Chicago Cubs Front Office where more than 70 associates guided students on an office tour. Then, through eight interactive virtual sessions, CASE participants collaborated with Cubs and other professional sports industry experts to explore key aspects of sports management, including scouting and player development, data analytics, marketing and social media and more. The students applied their knowledge in a capstone event, where they tackled real-world challenges faced by sports executives, demonstrating strategic thinking, teamwork and innovative problem-solving.

While working in the corporate world, she has always had different entrepreneurial endeavors. She believes it is important to have more than one stream of income.

Ingrid LaVon launched Geneba Tequila in February. When it went live on the website, more than 150 bottles were sold within the first 48 hours. The tequila was part of the pre-Oscars gifting lounge in Beverly Hills earlier this month. Already, it has been named one of the “Top 10 Black-owned Spirits Brands to Watch” by “The Spirits Business” Magazine.

She said she is super excited to be among the 1% of Black people and Black women who own a tequila brand. The mission is to empower women through the bottle, by scanning the QR code on the bottle, people can access classes and seminars.
Ingrid LaVon said she has been a tequila aficionado for more than 12 years. It started off as part of a health journey, while working out and trying to find things that were cleaner for her. In doing her research, she found out that tequila comes from the agave plant.
Eight years ago, she told a friend she wanted to have her own tequila brand one day. Then, about two years ago, she mentioned to the owner of a Mexican restaurant that she one day would own her own tequila brand. Two and a half years later, after travelling with her husband to Guadalajara, touring the Delgado distillery, going to the agave fields and chopping agave, Geneba Tequila is available for purchase.

She said to get into the tequila industry is different, she had to be approved by the Mexican government. It meant she had to build relationships. She is glad she was able to go through the process, because she learned things she didn’t know.
Ingrid LaVon said that Geneba Tequila is different than other tequilas because it is really good and has an accessible price. There are two kinds, Blanco and Reposado. She is hoping to have a Mezcal. The Blanco is double distilled so that a woman could sip it from a wine glass. The Reposado is aged nine months so it can be sipped with a cigar. She said she is still learning things about tequila and has been enjoying doing so.
While Geneba Tequila doesn’t have any additives, Ingrid LaVon said not all additives are bad. Her goal was to create a clean tequila for women, so there are no additives in it. As a Black woman in the spirits space, she said that being new the reception is positive. She said she thinks the world is ready for diverse spirits.
“I know there’s a lot going on in the world, but there’s just still so much good in the world. As long as you’re putting out a good product, you’re a good person, you have good intentions and the product is not just self-serving, and that it’s able to give back to communities, I think no matter who you are, you’ll be well-received,” Ingrid LaVon said.

Giannoulias Honors Student Organ Donors on ‘Sweetness Day’
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias celebrated the sophomore class of Walter Payton College Preparatory High School today after their day of service in honor of Walter “Sweetness” Payton, the school’s namesake.
Occurring every year on March 4th (3/4), Sweetness Day is a day of community service at Walter Payton College Prep. This year, the sophomore class participated in the Secretary of State’s Lifesaving Education and Awareness on Donation (LEAD) program, a community service program designed for high school students to promote organ and tissue donation among their peers.
“While we’re proud that Illinois has one of the largest organ and tissue donation registries in the country, there has been a gradual decline in younger people becoming donors nationwide,” said Giannoulias. By
presenting the facts and dispelling the myths about organ and tissue donation, these students are bucking that trend and signing up their peers to give the gift of life. I could not be more proud of them.”

Simmons Celebrates March 2 as Adwa Day
SPRINGFIELD – As the son of an Ethiopian refugee, as the very first Ethiopian-American to take the oath of office to serve in the Illinois Senate, State Senator Mike Simmons proudly rose during session to recognize March 2 as Adwa Day, a national holiday in Ethiopia commemorating the pivotal Battle of Adwa, celebrated by more than 130 million people throughout the Ethiopian Diaspora.

Adwa Day commemorates the pivotal Battle of Adwa where a militia of more than 100,000 men and women decisively fought off European colonialism on March 2,
1896 in the mountain town of Adwa. Ethiopia holds the place as the only African nation to remain independent and sovereign, never colonized, and officially recognized by global powers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
Menelik miraculously mobilized troops from all over Ethiopia, while Taitu created the blueprint that led to the overwhelming defeat of the army of the Kingdom of Italy which at the time was seeking to establish a colonial empire in East Africa.

Today’s Challenge, Tomorrow’s Reward is a two-day conference sponsored by IDOT’s Office of Business and Workforce Diversity to provide the tools and resources that help firms participate in state projects through the agency’s DBE program. Held Feb. 26 and 27, this year’s conference shattered previous attendance records, drawing 454 attendees representing a variety of prime contractors and subcontractors.
The department is looking to
grow its recent successes in making projects more inclusive and diverse. Last year was the first time in at least 15 years that IDOT exceeded its federal DBE goal as well as the third consecutive year it experienced an increase in participation levels of minority- and women-owned businesses on state projects. The conference aimed to expand on those efforts through networking and skill-building activities that create more participation opportunities and competition among the state’s small business community.
The conference concluded with an awards ceremony recognizing the achievements and efforts that helped to grow and support minority- and female-owned businesses in 2024.

Building upon this framework, the Alzheimer’s Association leads a Dementia Care Navigation Roundtable, bringing together health systems, payers, and dementia experts to develop standardized processes and protocols for dementia care navigation.
The Roundtable is working to refine patient navigation programs based on the established principles while gathering additional evidence to enhance their implementation across all care settings. The group aims to define the need for dementia care navigators and establish best practices for integrating this framework into healthcare systems nationwide.

When I ask people if they have their affairs in order, most say “yes.” But statistics tell a different story—less than 41% of Whites and only 26% of Blacks have estate plans. That means the majority are unprepared for their final years.
As a child, I often heard, “The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.” I hoped it wasn’t true, but today’s reality suggests otherwise. A study reported by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) found that Black homeownership is about the same as it was in 1970. This is alarming because real estate is the foundation of Black wealth—yet too many of us are dying without wills or trusts, leaving our property in limbo.

Chef Renard Tucker Infuses Living Fresh Market’s Hot Bar with a Unique Blend of Flavors from New Orleans and Beyond
FOREST PARK, Ill. -- The secret is out! Living Fresh Market’s hot bar, led by the talented Chef Renard Tucker, has become the go-to destination for families who want to enjoy restaurant-quality meals without the hassle of grocery shopping or dining in a restaurant.
Chef Tucker, 44, who hails from New Orleans, has been delighting customers with his authentic Cajun, Creole, and Southern cuisine for the past few years at what is believed to be the largest full-scale supermarket owned by an African American in the nation.
Last week, Chef Tucker and his team were in their element, serving up a feast of New Orleans and Fat Tuesday dishes that left customers longing for more. Corey Cooper, a retired policeman from Maywood, shared his enthusiasm during a recent visit: “Shrimp and grits, man, it’s that southern style. I knew he was from New Orleans. Every Friday, I come in just because of the shrimp and grits, and on other days when I’m here shopping, I get other things. This is dynamite.”
Chef Tucker’s culinary journey is as rich and flavorful as the dishes he prepares. His passion for cooking began at a young age, inspired by his grandmother’s fried chicken and homemade biscuits, jams, and jellies. “I love it. It is my first love. Cooking is my passion. Even from birth, I was in the kitchen with my grandmother. That’s where it started from,” Chef Tucker reminisced. He further honed his culinary skills while working on oil rigs for 15 years, learning from a seasoned chef who taught him everything before retiring.
Thirteen years ago, Chef Tucker, his mother, and a few other relatives moved from New Orleans to Chicago. This move was influenced by an aunt who had settled in the area 38 years ago.
His first cooking job was at an upscale Oakbrook seafood and steak house. He became the lead chef at Harvest 365 Restaurant & Fresh Grill, a fancy all-youcan-eat buffet with international cuisine inside the Forest Park Plaza in Forest Park. News reports roll out daily highlighting the latest cruelty from the Trump/Musk administration. The government is being aggressively and indiscriminately dismantled and with it the rights and safety net many depend on. This constant stream has created an atmosphere of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Shifts are coming at a pace that leave little time or space to deal with anything other than what is in front and what comes next. There is a surreal quality to the experience made all the stranger for the sense of business as usual that also exist.
There is a chorus of media pundits and influencers attempting to galvanize a broad response, yet in our everyday lives there seems to be little reflecting this urgency. It is only in private conversations that people are willing to admit the direness of our situation to themselves and to one another. Publicly, there exists this need for individuals to avoid being seen as alarmists and companies to avoid in any way drawing the ire of the administration.
This public distancing of ourselves from the severity of our situation is harmful to our mental health and further normalizes the harm being done. Corporate groups hosting events honoring women but not mentioning the fight we are in for bodily control are not empowering, they are hollow. There is nothing to be gained by pretending we are ok. In fact, we unintentionally contribute to the harm and entrench it when we go about our daily lives failing to hold ourselves, the companies we support, and our elected officials to the task of fighting for democracy. We do not do ourselves any favors by whispering our fears privately while wearing masks of normalcy publicly. It’s time to lead with our faith to dismantle the façade and face our fears.

the National Museum of African American History and Culture has welcomed 11 million in-person visitors and millions more through its digital presence.
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) celebrates Women’s History Month by honoring Black women who spearheaded the fight for justice, equality and change. The museum will recognize “Black Women: The Activist” as the theme for March and share stories, events and exhibits that demonstrate the resiliency of Black women. Preservation Workshop: Create An African Crazy Quilt
Wednesday, March 19–Friday, March 21; 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Second-floor classrooms
Participants can be a part of an exciting and inspiring three-day quilting workshop that honors the rich tradition of crazy quilting with an Afrocentric flair. Guided by the talented quilter artist Torreah “Cookie” Washington, this class provides a unique chance for intermediate to advanced quilters to bond with other enthusiasts, honor National Quilting Month and celebrate the launch of the museum’s latest exhibition, “In Slavery’s Wake.” Participants are required to bring their sewing machine with zig-zag stitching capabilities. A complete materials list and further classroom instructions will be given upon registration. The cost is $150. Register online; space is limited.

Heritage Hall and “The Explore More!” Gallery
Visitors can engage in multiple experiences inspired by women like Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded the National Council of Negro Women in 1935. “The Explore More!” Gallery on L2 will feature art activations inspired by flowers connected to Bethune and Sybrina Fulton. On the Concourse Level, the Sweet Home Café will offer sweet potato pie for purchase, inspired by the pies Bethune used to bake and sell for fundraising for her school for Black girls, Bethune-Cookman University in Florida. This event is free, but registration is required.
Connecting Our Past and Present With Thread:
Angela Davis

Participants can join a creative virtual embroidery workshop to honor Angela Davis’ legacy in honor of Women’s History Month. The event will celebrate her activism and persistent fight for justice with needle and thread. No experience is necessary; all that is required is a desire to create, connect and recognize Black women’s activism power. Visitors will receive all supplies in advance, including a hoop, needle, thread, fabric and a custom pattern inspired by Davis. This workshop will be led by Nichole Sorhaindo, creator and founder of The Other Cat blog and shop. Registration is required; cost is $20.

Sweet Home Café
Women’s History Month at the Sweet Home Café features a curated menu inspired by influential women. Award-winning chefs will share their personal stories by creating unique dishes and desserts that reflect their heritage, influences and identities. Top Scams to Watch Out for This Tax Season
(StatePoint) The days of filing paper tax returns are gone, and criminals are taking advantage. With taxpayers managing their sensitive information online, thieves are finding new ways to scam victims. In 2023 alone, the IRS reported $5.5 billion lost to tax fraud schemes. And the increased prevalence of artificial intelligence means tax scams this year will likely be more sophisticated than ever.
Scammers have an arsenal of weapons, but no matter their tactics, the goal is the same – to have you give them money or access to it. Here are scams to look out for this tax season: Tax avoidance scams. These scams often promise rewards too good to be true. Scammers claim to have specialized knowledge on exploiting loopholes to avoid taxes or maximize returns. High-income filers are heavily targeted through offers of seemingly
legitimate annuities or tax shelters. Refund scams. In this scam, a criminal will claim to be someone official notifying of an unclaimed or incorrectly calculated refund, prompting the victim to share information – and possibly bank account numbers – to claim it.
Violation scams. This is a fear-based scam, where the criminal poses as an IRS official threatening some punitive action, claiming the victim committed a violation and needs to contact them to resolve the situation.
Filing support scams.
Similar to tech support scams, criminals offer to help create IRS accounts to assist with the online filing process.
Frequently posing as tax preparers, scammers will go through the motions of gathering the victim’s personal information for tax forms they never intend to file.
Social media scams.
Social media serves as a great place for criminals to find potential victims and carry out tax scams, fraudulently claiming to offer different types of services or possessing unique knowledge or access.
Recovery scams. Once a victim is scammed, criminals will try to strike again – believing the victim is gullible. Exploiting a time of vulnerability, they’ll contact the victim with promises of helping them recover their losses and will leverage this as an opening to commit additional crimes.
While it is not always easy to pick out a scam, here are indicators to watch for:
• Promise of a big pay-out. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Request for your account information.
The IRS will never ask for your credit or debit account information over the phone.
• Random contact. The IRS contacts taxpayers by mail first and will never contact via random phone calls or digital means. The IRS will not leave prerecorded, urgent, or threatening voicemails.
• Demands or threats. The IRS can’t
revoke your driver’s license, business licenses or immigration status and cannot threaten to immediately bring in local law enforcement. Taxpayers are allowed an appeals process, so any message of “now or
