The Englewood Arts Collective was formed by ten multidisciplinary artists who came together in 2017, but they became really active three years later in the summer of 2020, responding to what was happening in the world at the time.

MANLEY BILL REFINES ACCOUNTING LICENSURE, EXPANDS PATHWAYS FOR PROFESSIONALS
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Working to expand pathways for certified public accountants (CPAs) to work in Illinois, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is sponsoring a bill that would add two additional methods for CPAs to gain licensure and make it easier for non-residents to provide CPA services in the state.
“With tax season upon us, this bill fixes some of the barriers for residents that want to become a CPA and establishes a pathway for current CPAs that want to work in Illinois — licensure stalls, red-tape, and antiquated requirements,” said Manley. “This is a practical, no-fuss solution that lowers barriers to CPA license access to address the profession’s pipeline crisis and workforce shortage by one, encouraging out-of-state accountants in good standing to come practice in Illinois, and two, allowing qualified accounting graduates who have passed the CPA exam to become licensed.”
Manley recently filed House Bill 2459, which would amend the Illinois Public Accounting Act by carving two new pathways for accounting professionals without disturbing the current path to licensure, allowing CPA applicants to become licensed with:
A bachelor’s degree in accounting, at least two years of experience, and the passage of the CPA exam; or
A bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree with 30 hours of accounting concentration, at least one year of experience, and passage of the CPA exam.
“By putting two new licensure methods on the table for our accounting professionals, we can ease burdens around tax season where so many of our residents request accounting services by slashing the red tape that’s kept more than qualified individuals from practicing and serving our state.”
House Bill 2459 is currently under consideration by the Financial Institution and Licenses Committee.
CHICAGO STUDENTS SHINE IN SPORTS CAREERS SHOWCASE FOR CUBS CHARITIES
Chicago Public School Students Step into the Role of Sports Executives, Presenting Innovative Solutions at Wrigley Field
CHICAGO — More than 90 Chicago Public Schools students from high schools across Chicago stepped into the shoes of sports executives showcasing their strategic thinking and problem-solving skills while presenting their final projects for Cubs Charities’ Careers As Sports Executives (CASE) Study Program. The event marked the culmination of the six-week program, which immerses students in the business of sports while equipping them with real-world career skills.
“The CASE program is an incredible opportunity to discover your interests and explore potential career paths. It has given me valuable insight into my future and helped me think more deeply about where I want to end up in life,” said Sophia Hernandez, student of ITW David Speer Academy, CASE program participant and Cubs Nike RBI player.
The program led off with a networking event at the Chicago Cubs Front Office where more than 70 associates guided students on an office tour. Then, through eight interactive virtual sessions, CASE participants collaborated with Cubs and other professional sports industry experts to explore key aspects of sports management, including scouting and player development, data analytics, marketing and social media and more. The students applied their knowledge in a capstone event, where they tackled real-world challenges faced by sports executives, demonstrating strategic thinking, teamwork and innovative problem-solving.
“The CASE Study Program offers an opportunity for students who may not have other avenues to explore and learn about working in the sports industry, while also introducing them to a network of professionals,” said Jennifer Dedes-Nowak, Assistant Director of Cubs Charities. “It’s inspiring to see their ambition and dedication, and we’re proud to help develop the next generation of leaders in sports.”
Originally launched in Chicago in 2018, the CASE program has since expanded to Major League Baseball markets in Detroit, New York City, and San Francisco. Through this initiative, Cubs Charities continues to invest in academic and career opportunities for youth, providing students with exposure to careers beyond the playing field.

The Englewood Arts Collective Creates Visibility Through Arts
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
The collective initiative came together with the mission to positively represent where they were from, Englewood and West Englewood.
“Just in our lived experiences, we realized that many people had such negative connotations to the neighborhood where we grew up and still loved,” said Co-Founder Janell Nelson. “By virtue of just representing ourselves and coming together to say, hey, look what comes out of neighborhoods like Greater Englewood … we just wanted to reframe the narrative.”
Nelson’s discipline is in graphic design, and she created the website for the Englewood Arts Collective for them to promote the artists in the collective. In 2020, they became more active with the mutual aid drop, where they distributed funds to other South side artists, and activated and transformed the vacant viaduct on 58th and Halsted. They also hosted a hosted a community paint day and designed the Englewood Gateway Mural.
Nelson is passionate about advocacy for artists, especially in bureaucratic spaces, with elected officials. Pugs Atomz is another Co-Founder who is also an entrepreneur, artist and clothier. He has expertise in how artists can be economic forces and drivers. He had his own booth at the art fair before and was able to leverage that into an opportunity for the collective to participate.
The Englewood Arts Collective will be providing programming for ‘The Other Art Fair’, which will include printmaking, collaging, beat making, as well as live painting demonstrations, magnet decorating, a mosaic demonstration and mindfulness and macramé. Nelson said participating in ‘The Other Art Fair’ speaks to how artists can tap into their own agency and not be siphoned or extracting the culture, but represent the culture in spaces where that representation might not always be at the forefront.

What started as a reaction was proactively being used as a tool and catalyst for a positive transformation. The Englewood Arts Collective is one of the community partners at this year’s ‘The Other Art Fair’, which will take place from Thursday through Sunday, March 27th30th, at Artifact Events, located at 4325 N. Ravenswood Ave.
The Englewood Arts Collective has four main tenets: revitalize public spaces through art driven beautification, engage all Chicagoans in creative experiences that build community pride, disrupt harmful narratives about Greater Englewood through artmaking and visibility, and to create economic opportunities for other South side artists.
Being a part of ‘The Other Art Fair’ with the Englewood Arts Collective is also an opportunity for artists to get visibility, sell their art and build based on that visibility. Pugs Atomz said because of his participation in last year’s show, he was asked to participate in Art Beats & Lyrics, a traveling artists showcase.
“You’re also able to build relationships with buyers, galleries and other artists, because there are people from all over the U.S. who come to each city to show their art work,” Pugs Atomz said.

Illinois Nurses Convene at State Capitol to Engage with Leaders on Critical Healthcare Priorities
SPRINGFIELD – In early March, more than 70 nurses from Illinois’ Magnet hospitals met with Illinois lawmakers to stress the importance of investing in healthcare, while also advocating for policies that prioritize patient safety, support clinical leadership and innovation, and preserve access to quality care for all Illinois residents.
“Illinois is home to world-class hospitals dedicated to excellence,” said A.J. Wilhelmi, Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA) President and CEO. “IHA congratulates Illinois’ Magnet hospitals for this significant distinction and celebrates all Illinois hospitals for their unwavering commitment to patient care. We are especially grateful for our nursing workforce, whose dedication goes above and beyond to deliver exceptional service and improve health outcomes across the state.”
During Magnet Hospital Day, attendees had the opportunity to network, celebrate the journey to Magnet status, and share with legislators the critical role hospitals and direct care nurses play in delivering high-quality care, achieving better patient outcomes, building stronger hospital teams, and contributing to healthier communities.
Illinois currently has over 50 hospitals designated as Magnet hospitals through the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Hospital Recognition
Program for Excellence in Nursing Services, making Illinois one of the top states with Magnet hospitals. The Magnet Recognition Program requires that hospitals meet rigorous requirements shown to improve patient outcomes, empower nurses to lead change, and foster a culture where nurses can thrive.

The Illinois Health and Hospital Association, with offices in Chicago, Naperville, Springfield, and Washington, D.C., advocates for Illinois’ more than 200 hospitals and nearly 40 health systems as they serve their patients and communities. IHA members provide a broad range of services—not just within their walls, but across the continuum of healthcare and in their communities. Reflecting the diversity of the state, IHA members consist of nonprofit, investor-owned and public hospitals in the following categories: community, safety net, rural, critical access, specialty, and teaching hospitals, including academic medical centers. ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL ISSUES MULTISTATE GUIDANCE FOR SCHOOLS ON
DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND ACCESSIBILITY INITIATIVES
Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and New York Attorney General Letitia James led a coalition of 15 attorneys general in issuing guidance to help K-12 schools, colleges and universities understand the legality, viability and importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility policies and practices in education.
The guidance comes in response to concerns following a Trump administration executive order and the U.S. Department of Education’s “Dear Colleague” letter and FAQ document targeting diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility policies

and programming in schools. The coalition’s guidance reminds educational entities that efforts to seek and support diverse, equitable, inclusive and accessible educational experiences for students are legal, and that longstanding legal precedents supporting these programs cannot be changed by an executive order or a letter from the Department of Education.
diversify their applicant pools and student bodies through recruitment efforts. The guidance notes that institutions do not have to ignore race when identifying prospective students for outreach and recruitment programs, provided such programs do not give students preference based on racial status, and that all students have the same opportunity to apply and compete for admission. Schools can continue to target outreach to potential applicants based on a wide range of characteristics, such as academic interests, geographic residency, financial means and socioeconomic status, family background and parental education level.

Alzheimer’s Association Advances Dementia Care Navigation to Improve Patient Support
In an effort to enhance patient care and coordination for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, the Alzheimer’s Association has established a standardized framework for dementia care navigation. Dementia care navigators play a crucial role in guiding patients and their families through the complexities of the healthcare system, ensuring they receive appropriate treatment and support.

“Diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility initiatives do more than prevent discrimination – they promote respect, understanding and the celebration of diverse perspectives. This means ensuring that people of diverse races, backgrounds, beliefs and abilities are present and valued in educational settings; that everyone receives fair treatment and equal access to opportunities; and that individuals and groups feel welcomed and supported in those settings,” Raoul said. “As Illinois’ chief law enforcement officer, I am committed to enforcing federal and state civil rights laws to protect the rights of all people in Illinois and across the nation against discriminatory practices. I will continue to stand with my fellow attorneys general as we condemn discrimination in any form.”

Opponents to diversity initiatives have sought to improperly expand the U.S. Supreme Court’s narrow ruling in Students for Fair Admissions Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College (SFFA) far beyond its scope. Today’s multistate guidance updates guidance issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts after the 2023 ruling. It clarifies that the recent executive order and communications from the Department of Education do not change the law with respect to higher education admissions, and they do not and cannot prohibit or restrict universities from pursuing and implementing diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts. The updated guidance also includes tips to help K-12 schools set their students up for success.
In their guidance, Raoul and the attorneys general emphasize that institutions of higher education can continue to create missions and set goals related to student body diversity and equitable outcomes for students and can use all legal methods to pursue them.
The attorneys general clarify that while SFFA limited the ability of institutions of higher education to consider an applicant’s race in and of itself as a positive factor for admission, schools can still work to
The guidance also encourages K-12 schools to strive for a school climate where all students feel safe, supported, respected and ready to learn. School leaders can do this by reviewing their current practices to ensure that their district complies with anti-discrimination, anti-bullying and civil rights laws, and by adopting programs and policies that incorporate best practices and meet the needs of their communities. In addition, Raoul and the attorneys general identify steps schools can take to ensure that all students, including those from historically underrepresented backgrounds, are prepared for college or careers.
This guidance is the most recent action Raoul has taken to defend diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts since the Supreme Court’s SFFA ruling. Last month, Raoul and Campbell co-led a coalition of attorneys general issuing multistate guidance for businesses on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility initiatives in the workplace. In January, Raoul led a coalition of attorneys general in sending a letter to Walmart voicing concerns about the company’s announcement of its plans to step away from its commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Raoul also condemned unfounded attacks on the FBI that attempted –without merit – to tie the New Year’s Day act of terrorism in New Orleans to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. He has also led outreach efforts to Fortune 500 companies and the American Bar Association affirming the strides toward diversity they have made, clarifying that these efforts are legal and encouraging them to continue.
Joining Attorneys General Raoul, Campbell and James in issuing this educational guidance are the attorneys general of California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island and Vermont.
To encourage the widespread adoption of coordinated care models, the Alzheimer’s Association convened an expert workgroup of researchers to define consistent dementia care navigation. Their findings, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research and Clinical Interventions (TRCI), outline seven essential principles for dementia care navigation that emphasize personcentered care.
According to the workgroup, effective dementia care navigation should:
• Be person- and family-centered to foster collaboration and engagement.
• Be culturally responsive and address disparities in healthcare access and support services.
• Clearly define roles and responsibilities for all members of the dementia care navigation team.
• Address barriers related to medical, legal, financial, emotional, and other challenges faced by individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.
• Provide coaching, education, and coordination that is empowering, solution-focused, and strengthsbased.
• Focus on the family unit as defined by the person living with dementia.
• Ensure that processes and protocols are evidence-based.
Dementia Care Navigation Roundtable Building upon this framework, the Alzheimer’s Association leads a Dementia Care Navigation Roundtable, bringing together health systems, payers, and dementia experts to develop standardized processes and protocols for dementia care navigation.
The Roundtable is working to refine patient navigation programs based on the established principles while gathering additional evidence to enhance their implementation across all care settings. The group aims to define the need for dementia care navigators and establish best practices for integrating this framework into healthcare systems nationwide.

In an unpredictable world, financial emergencies can arise at any moment, whether due to unexpected medical expenses, job loss, or natural disasters. Building financial resilience is not just about having a safety net; it’s about cultivating habits and strategies that help ensure stability and peace of mind in the face of uncertainty.
Here are some practical tips to help you prepare financially for future emergencies, empowering you to navigate life’s challenges with confidence:

You can set up automatic transfers from your checking to your savings account to ensure consistent contributions without having to think about it. By storing your emergency fund in a high-yield savings account or money market account, it can earn interest yet still remain easily accessible.
2 Budget Wisely: Use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to monitor your expenses and identify areas where you can potentially cut back. Also be sure to prioritize needs

over wants by focusing on essential expenses and reduce discretionary spending to help free up more money for savings. Revisit your budget periodically to accommodate changes in income or expenses and ensure you’re on track.

Get Your House In Order
The Rich Get Richer, and the Poor Get Poorer
When I ask people if they have their affairs in order, most say “yes.” But statistics tell a different story—less than 41% of Whites and only 26% of Blacks have estate plans. That means the majority are unprepared for their final years.
As a child, I often heard, “The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.” I hoped it wasn’t true, but today’s reality suggests otherwise. A study reported by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) found that Black homeownership is about the same as it was in 1970. This is alarming because real estate is the foundation of Black wealth—yet too many of us are dying without wills or trusts, leaving our property in limbo.

Take my South Shore community: once 85% owner-occupied, it’s now just 23%. A major reason? Many residents live in homes still titled to deceased relatives, never going through the legal process to claim ownership. The cost to update a title is minimal compared to the financial benefits of securing property for future generations. As a former owner of a AMAXX Title Services, I can show you how.
I urge you—get your house in order. Make a will. Establish a trust. Transfer property titles. If you don’t, the state will decide who gets what, and your family’s wealth could be lost.
Remember the adage: “The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer”. Don’t let that happen to your family, make plans today to build your family’s wealth for generations to come. Bye for now, Bren.

Answer to last week’s quiz: Term life insurance is an excellent financial tool to use for paying predictable expenses, such as a mortgage, that would be difficult or impossible to pay if the primary wage earner dies.

Natural Vs. Lab-Grown Diamonds: Know What You’re Buying New Diamond Verification Device Introduced
One of the most common misconceptions in the ongoing debate between natural and non-natural diamonds is that it’s impossible to tell the difference between the two. Research shows that almost half of consumers are unaware that laboratory-grown diamonds (LGDs) can be detected from their natural counterparts. For consumers who are investing in diamonds and diamond jewelry, this means there is perhaps a lack of assurance that they are getting what they think they are paying for.
This spring, with the introduction of a new verification device, the DiamondProof, to retail stores for the first time, consumers will be able to make informed purchasing decisions and distinguish natural diamonds from non-natural diamonds, like LGDs and other diamond simulants, with a zero percent ‘false positive rate’.

and ordered the device for their stores, noting the ability to rapidly and easily screen both loose diamonds as well as stones set in jewelry.
“Natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds are two fundamentally different products. Natural diamonds are rare, one-ofa-kind miracles of nature that come to us from the earth through heat, pressure and time.” notes CEO of De Beers Brands Sandrine Conseiller. “This incredible journey is what makes them the ultimate marker of life’s most profound emotional moments. Consumers should be able to have confidence in such a meaningful purchase, and DiamondProof allows retailers to offer them greater peace of mind. We are in a new era of transparency at retail, and customers deserve to know what they are buying.”
Developed by De Beers Group, the DiamondProof technology is able to detect the distinct chemical compositions of natural diamonds, allowing for precise and rapid identification. Early adopters of the DiamondProof include some of the largest jewelry retailers in the U.S., and the device will also be available in a number of independent retail outlets to ensure that any diamond consumer is able to try out the technology and gain assurance on their own jewelry, or diamonds they are planning to purchase.
The first DiamondProof prototype instrument was unveiled last June at the JCK show in Las Vegas, the premier jewelry expo for retail professionals. Many quickly jumped on board
“By rapidly and reliably identifying whether a diamond is natural, DiamondProof is instrumental in enhancing consumer confidence in natural diamond purchases. Consumers deserve clarity and having DiamondProof available in retail settings helps them make informed decisions, while appreciating the unique value and story behind each natural diamond. With decades of leadership in synthetic detection technology, we are committed to providing the level of transparency that consumers expect,” stated Sarandos Gouvelis, SVP, Pricing, Product and Technology Development at De Beers Group.
For anyone looking to evaluate and verify their own diamond jewelry, or looking for assurance in new diamond purchases, a major retailer near you will soon have a DiamondProof available.

Chef Renard Tucker Infuses Living Fresh Market’s Hot Bar with a Unique Blend of Flavors from New Orleans and Beyond
FOREST PARK, Ill. -- The secret is out! Living Fresh Market’s hot bar, led by the talented Chef Renard Tucker, has become the go-to destination for families who want to enjoy restaurant-quality meals without the hassle of grocery shopping or dining in a restaurant.
Chef Tucker, 44, who hails from New Orleans, has been delighting customers with his authentic Cajun, Creole, and Southern cuisine for the past few years at what is believed to be the largest full-scale supermarket owned by an African American in the nation.
Last week, Chef Tucker and his team were in their element, serving up a feast of New Orleans and Fat Tuesday dishes that left customers longing for more. The hot bar featured fan favorites such as jambalaya, blackened catfish, seasoned asparagus, macaroni and cheese, shrimp and grits, and a seafood boil. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
Corey Cooper, a retired policeman from Maywood, shared his enthusiasm during a recent visit: “Shrimp and grits, man, it’s that southern style. I knew he was from New Orleans. Every Friday, I come in just because of the shrimp and grits, and on other days when I’m here shopping, I get other things. This is dynamite.”
Chef Tucker’s culinary journey is as rich and flavorful as the dishes he prepares. His passion for cooking began at a young age, inspired by his grandmother’s fried chicken and homemade biscuits, jams, and jellies. “I love it. It is my first love. Cooking is my passion. Even from birth, I was in the kitchen with my grandmother. That’s where it started from,” Chef Tucker reminisced. He further honed his culinary skills while working on oil rigs for 15 years, learning from a seasoned chef who taught him everything before retiring.
Thirteen years ago, Chef Tucker, his mother, and a few other relatives moved from New Orleans to Chicago. This move was influenced by an aunt who had settled in the area 38 years ago.
His first cooking job was at an upscale Oakbrook seafood and steak house. He became the lead chef at Harvest 365 Restaurant & Fresh Grill, a fancy all-youcan-eat buffet with international cuisine inside the Forest Park Plaza in Forest Park. From Harvest, he launched Heavens Kitchen Catering Inc., before being lured by Living Fresh Market’s senior executive Melody Winston to become the chef of the hot bar.
Chef Tucker’s weekly menu at Living Fresh Market is a testament to his dedication to providing high-quality, flavorful dishes. From Tuesday to Sunday, customers can enjoy a variety of themed meals:
Taco Tuesdays: A celebration of Mexican flavors with various tacos.
Wild Wing Wednesdays: Featuring a selection of delicious chicken wings.
Soul Food Thursdays: Featuring popular soul food dishes, including fried chicken, candied yams, and peach cobbler.
Seafood Fridays: A seafood lover’s dream with dishes like shrimp and grits.
Soul Food Saturdays and Sundays: Comfort food, including dressing and greens, is evident in every dish he prepares.
His dedication to consistency and quality has made Living Fresh Market’s hot bar a favorite among customers.
“People want good quality food. Once they taste it, the experience will draw them here,” Chef Tucker emphasized. “I put pride and love in it and have my worship music on. I praise God, giving him the highest glory, because everything good comes from him. He is number 1. That’s the secret to our success.”

Private Fear, Public Façade
News reports roll out daily highlighting the latest cruelty from the Trump/Musk administration. The government is being aggressively and indiscriminately dismantled and with it the rights and safety net many depend on. This constant stream has created an atmosphere of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Shifts are coming at a pace that leave little time or space to deal with anything other than what is in front and what comes next. There is a surreal quality to the experience made all the stranger for the sense of business as usual that also exist.
There is a chorus of media pundits and influencers attempting to galvanize a broad response, yet in our everyday lives there seems to be little reflecting this urgency. It is only in private conversations that people are willing to admit the direness of our situation to themselves and to one another. Publicly, there exists this need for individuals to avoid being seen as alarmists and companies to avoid in any way drawing the ire of the administration.
This public distancing of ourselves from the severity of our situation is harmful to our mental health and further normalizes the harm being done. Corporate groups hosting events honoring women but not mentioning the fight we are in for bodily control are not empowering, they are hollow. There is nothing to be gained by pretending we are ok. In fact, we unintentionally contribute to the harm and entrench it when we go about our daily lives failing to hold ourselves, the companies we support, and our elected officials to the task of fighting for democracy. We do not do ourselves any favors by whispering our fears privately while wearing masks of normalcy publicly. It’s time to lead with our faith to dismantle the façade and face our fears.

The Apollo’s Dining with the Divas Luncheon
Hosted By Bevy Smith Raises $450K for Arts Education
(Black PR Wire) Harlem, NY – The Apollo proudly announces the success of its annual Dining with the Divas luncheon, which raised over $450K to support The Apollo’s education programs. These initiatives provide over 20,000 NYC students with access to free or low-cost performances at The Apollo each year, as well as offer paid internships and apprenticeships for on-site career training and workforce development in the arts.
Hosted by Bevy Smith, the event, held on Thursday, February 13 transformed the iconic Apollo Theater into a vibrant dining space and featured performances by Junior Scaife and students from C.S. 154, the school has been in partnership with Apollo Education for over 15 years, and music by Angel and Dren.
This year, the luncheon honored Joan Haffenreffer, a dedicated Dining with the Divas co-chair, for her unwavering commitment to the event over the past decade. Inspirational remarks were given by Aurora James, Founder of the Fifteen Percent Pledge and Creative Director & Founder of Brother Vellies; Esi Eggleston Bracey, Chief Growth and Marketing Officer at Unilever; Tina Perry, President of OWN, Michelle Ebanks; President & CEO of The Apollo and Kamilah Forbes, Executive Producer of The Apollo as they celebrated extraordinary women across various industries who serve as role models and mentors.
Michelle Ebanks, President and CEO of The Apollo, reflected on the organization’s vision and strategic direction for the year: “The forces that seek to divide us and undermine us are real; they have a strategy, but we have one too. Because at The Apollo
it’s about the artist and the talent but it’s also about the audience. The audience has their say, and your say matters to us. This year we will do three things: we will focus on deepening our existing relationships in our community and creating new ones, we will leverage our data to drive action, and we will craft messages and opportunities that break through the noise and build momentum. Our work is not responding to political shifts, it’s about shaping the future.”
Kamilah Forbes, Executive Producer of The Apollo, highlighted the significance of ongoing education efforts: “This event highlights our education programs. And our program has been in effect for the last 20 years. We serve close to 20,000 young people around the city annually through inschool programs, through digital programs, and through programs here onsite at The Apollo. Where we are giving instructions around culture, leadership, and innovation. Divas aren’t just born, they are nurtured and inspired and cultivated and that is what we are doing. Cultivating the next generation.”
Distinguished guests included NYC Commissioner Laurie Cumbo, Janai Nelson, Karol Mason, Tonya Lewis Lee, Susan Kelechi Watson, Thelma Golden, Erika Liles, Jodie Taylor.
Over 350 attendees gathered to celebrate, network, and contribute to The Apollo’s year-round education, community, and performing arts programs benefiting New York City students and families.

Free TV Networks (FTN) serves consumers as the leading independent owner of national premium free over-the-air digital broadcast networks (“diginets”) and free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) platforms.
In partnership with global content leaders Warner Bros. Discovery and Lionsgate, and broadcast powerhouse Gray Media, FTN launched its first two Broadcast Networks on January 1, 2024, with 365BLK, serving African American viewers with blockbuster movies and hit series; and OUTLAW, showcasing iconic and legendary tales of the Old West. Both Broadcast Networks have corresponding FTN FAST Channels under the same branding. Partnering with A+E Networks, on July 1, 2024, FTN launched its third Broadcast Network, DEFY, featuring popular unscripted TV series. These three diginets are on air in 90% of the U.S.
On March 1, FTN launched its fourth Broadcast Network, BUSTED, offering audiences endless thrills through first-hand, high-adrenaline, crime-focused programming. It is anticipated to launch with more than 90% coverage of U.S. households via distribution on Scripps; Gray Media; Nexstar Media Group, Inc.; and HC2 Broadcasting TV stations nationwide.

(StatePoint) Receiving a tax refund this year? While it can be tempting to impulse spend, if you want to really treat yourself, financial professionals recommend using the payout for practical expenses.
According to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNING® professionals, here are smart ways to spend your tax refund that will improve your life:
1. Build an emergency fund: Unexpected circumstances, such as illness or job loss, can leave you with more bills and less income. Not having an emergency fund puts you at risk of having to take on high-interest debt to meet expenses. Use your tax refund to create some peace of mind for yourself and your family. And now that you’ve started the emergency fund, consider using direct deposit to funnel a portion of each paycheck into this account.
2.Reduce debt: Paying down debt can feel like an insurmountable challenge. And if it’s a challenge you’ve been avoiding, you can use your tax refund to kickstart your journey. Not sure where to start? A CFP® professional can help you identify which debt to prioritize first, as well as help you craft a repayment strategy moving forward.
3. Save for retirement: No matter your age or stage in life, a tax refund offers a
great opportunity to give your retirement account a boost. Thanks to compounding, the money you set aside today in an investment account, such as a 401(k) or Roth IRA, will exponentially grow between now and when it’s time to tap your nest egg.
4.Set financial goals: From planning a vacation or wedding to becoming a homeowner, your goals are worth investing in. Put your tax refund toward something that matters to you.
The best thing you can do may be avoiding future refunds. While it feels great to receive a big check during tax time, a tax refund is effectively an interest-free loan you have made to the government. You’re much better off keeping more of your money throughout the year so you can invest it or use it on things you need. Consult a CFP® professional on how to adjust your withholdings to get closer to breaking even next year. For more tax season tips and to find your CFP® professional, visit LetsMakeAPlan.org.
With an actionable plan and the help of a qualified financial professional, you can ensure your tax refund is put to good use.
Top Scams to Watch Out for This Tax Season
(StatePoint) The days of filing paper tax returns are gone, and criminals are taking advantage. With taxpayers managing their sensitive information online, thieves are finding new ways to scam victims. In 2023 alone, the IRS reported $5.5 billion lost to tax fraud schemes. And the increased prevalence of artificial intelligence means tax scams this year will likely be more sophisticated than ever.
Scammers have an arsenal of weapons, but no matter their tactics, the goal is the same – to have you give them money or access to it. Here are scams to look out for this tax season:
Tax avoidance scams. These scams often promise rewards too good to be true. Scammers claim to have specialized knowledge on exploiting loopholes to avoid taxes or maximize returns. High-income filers

are heavily targeted through offers of seemingly legitimate annuities or tax shelters.
Refund scams. In this scam, a criminal will claim to be someone official notifying of an unclaimed or incorrectly calculated refund, prompting the victim to share information – and possibly bank account numbers – to claim it.
Violation scams. This is a fearbased scam, where the criminal poses as an IRS official threatening some punitive action, claiming the victim committed a violation and needs to contact them to resolve the situation.
Filing support scams. Similar to tech support scams, criminals offer to help create IRS accounts to assist with the online filing process. Frequently posing as tax preparers, scammers will go through the motions of gathering the victim’s personal information for tax forms they never intend to file.
Social media scams. Social media serves as a great place for criminals to find potential victims and carry out tax scams, fraudulently claiming to offer different types of services or possessing unique knowledge or access.
Recovery scams. Once a victim is scammed, criminals will try to strike again –believing the victim is gullible. Exploiting a time of vulnerability, they’ll contact the victim with promises of helping them recover their losses and will leverage this as an opening to commit additional crimes.
While it is not always easy to pick out a scam, here are indicators to watch for:
• Promise of a big pay-out. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Request for your account information. The IRS will never ask for your credit or debit account information over the phone.
• Random contact. The IRS contacts taxpayers by mail first and will never contact via random phone calls or digital means. The IRS will not leave prerecorded, urgent, or threatening voicemails.
• Demands or threats. The IRS can’t revoke your driver’s license, business licenses or immigration status and cannot threaten to immediately bring in local law enforcement. Taxpayers are allowed an appeals process, so any message of “now or else” won’t come from an official channel.
• Request for you to click a weblink. Odd or misspelled web links can take you to harmful sites instead of IRS.gov.
The IRS recommends these best practices to protect against tax fraud:
• Get an early start. File early so criminals have less time to impersonate you.
• Set up a verified account. Set up your own IRS account before someone else can and use an Identity Protection PIN – a six-digit number known only to you and the IRS.
• Wait for written notice. Do not respond to any supposed communications from the IRS if you haven’t first received official notification through U.S. mail. If you get a call from someone claiming to be the IRS, hang up and call the official number on the website before engaging. Further, never click a link sent digitally as initial contact.
Apply good cyber hygiene. Do not use public Wi-Fi when filing your tax returns. Do use strong passwords, secured network connections and multi-factor authentication. Run all software updates and keep systems current. If you fall victim to a tax scam, report it to the IRS. For more scam protection tips, visit PNC’s Security & Privacy Center at pnc.com. One wrong click can cause tremendous damage that ends up earning bad guys a windfall. However, a little caution can go a long way in helping you avoid a costly tax scam.
