CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Committed to advancing local services and improving infrastructure in her communities, State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is celebrating recent funding for Champaign County’s Apollo Industrial Park made possible by Ammons’ support for Governor Pritzker’s Regional Site Readiness Program.
“I’m pleased that one of Champaign County’s busiest business hubs is receiving grant money, which will be dedicated to finetuning Apollo Industrial Park’s wastewater system,” said Ammons. “When we signal to businesses that we home top-notch warehouse functionality, we give them the assurance that they’ll thrive here — leading to job growth and tangible economic benefits for Champaign-Urbana residents.”
The Champaign County Economic Development Corporation will use the $150,000 award to study wastewater engineering for 301 acres at Apollo Industrial Park, which is home to distribution hubs of over 26 businesses, inauding FedEx and Caterpillar. Wastewater engineering involves designing and constructing water treatment and sewage systems to remove pollutants from water before it is returned to streams, rivers, or used for irrigation.
Ammons voted YES for House Bill 4582 and House Bill 3551 in the last legislative session, which authorized the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) to implement the Regional Site Readiness Program for infrastructure improvements to prepare areas around Illinois for future development.
BALLY’S CHICAGO CASINO LAUNCHES ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKING EMPLOYEE TRAINING PROGRAM
CHICAGO, Ill. – Bally’s Chicago Casino is taking an aggressive step toward fighting human trafficking by launching a comprehensive antihuman trafficking employee training program. In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Bally’s Chicago paired the program launch with a “Give $5, Get $10” charitable contribution campaign benefitting the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE), where customers received free play for donating to the local charity throughout the month of January.
The extensive training program educates employees in weekly sessions on how trafficking might be present in the surrounding community, trained team members on possible trafficking indicators they might encounter within the casino and empowered them to respond appropriately if they suspect trafficking activity is present. By raising awareness across all departments and encouraging all employees to actively help address the threat of human trafficking, Bally’s Chicago is committed to creating a culture of responsibility that helps tackle one of the world’s fastest-growing crimes.
“As part of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, we were pleased to launch our Chicago anti-human trafficking awareness program,” said Monica Scott, Bally’s Chicago Vice President of Community Engagement. “Knowing that just one person can make a big impact, team members will use the variety of tools in their role to ensure trafficking is not present in our property and Bally’s will continue to encourage a culture of compliance with our internal reporting policies. With Bally’s Chicago’s launch of the program, we believe that the progressive initiative will help fight human trafficking in each community we serve.”
The “Give $5, Get $10” charitable contribution campaign benefitted CAASE and was available to Bally Rewards members each Monday in January. Players donated to receive free play based on Tier: Pro: Up to 1x per day - $5 donation for $10 Free Play Star: Up to 2x per day - $10 donation for $20 Free Play
Superstar: Up to 3x per day - $15 donation for $30 Free Play
Legend: Up to 4x per day - $20 donation for $40 Free Play

The 100 Black Men of Chicago was formed in 1994, became incorporated in 1995 and is an affiliate chapter of 100 Black Men, which has more than 110 chapters internationally. 100 Black Men of Chicago is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The organization focuses on mentoring, health and wellness, education and economic development.
“We reach back into the community and we call it mentoring for a lifetime,” Day said. “We mentor young, mostly African American males, from grammar school through high school through college. We have had the good fortune of having a mentee that we started mentoring in grammar school, they eventually became the president of the organization.”
Day said the 100 Black Men of Chicago ensures it stays connected with the young people it mentors through their lifetime. If those young people are interested in attending college, the organizations helps to identify potential scholarships for them, as well as internships during the summer. Because the members of 100 Black Men of Chicago come from various backgrounds, it is able to help young African American men navigate through life.
that young people know there will be challenges in their lives, but there are people who will help and support them through those challenges. Day became aware of 100 Black Men of Chicago while he worked at the cable company and the cable company was a corporate supporter. Later, working at Macy’s, Day was asked to become a member of the organization and lend his expertise and bring his network.
Day One Estate Directors is owned by Day’s sister, who had been in real estate for many years. Day is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships. The company does construction and real estate management. Two years ago, the company purchased a farm near Kankakee, which they intend to turn into a solar farm.
“We reach back into the community and we call it mentoring for a lifetime,” Day said. “We mentor young, mostly African American males, from grammar school through high school through college. We have had the good fortune of having a mentee that we started mentoring them in grammar school, they eventually became the president of the organization.”
Day said the one thing people should know about owning their own business is finance. He said he tells young people who are going to college to take finance courses because it is important to understand the dynamics of investing and what money can do for a person. He added there are three things to do with money, spend it, save it and invest it. He said when going into business a person, entrepreneurs should ask themselves why they are starting the business, what is the purpose, is it sustainable, do they have the money to start the business and if they have a good support – good attorney, good accountant, good financial institution. He said it is very important that entrepreneurs do their homework and are prepared.
Day said it is important to have organizations like the 100 Black Men of Chicago to bring back interdependency in the community, where people can count on, rely on and trust each other. He said it is important to ensure

By supporting diverse voices and providing the resources needed for creativity, we ensure that both emerging and established artists have the freedom to shape the future of theater.”
The New Play Residency, and the culminating readings, build on DCASE’s successful Dance Studio Residency program, now in its third year, and are part of the department’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation in the performing arts.

CHICAGO — ComEd joined a variety of local and industry stakeholders at the annual Chicago Auto Show to announce that it has made $100 million in rebates available to help more customers take steps toward electric vehicles (EVs) in 2025. To reduce upfront cost barriers to EVs, the rebates cover three distinct programs: residential EV charger and installation costs, all-electric fleet vehicles and business and public sector make ready charging infrastructure. ComEd EV investments are available for residential, business and public sector customers, and are designed to equitably provide funding for communities to promote the widespread adoption of EVs in Illinois.
Customers can apply now for a variety of EV rebates at www.comed.com/ clean.
“ComEd is focused on ensuring that not only is the grid is equipped for increased electrification, but that our customers and communities have the
support needed to navigate the transition to EVs and the benefits they provide for customers as well as the environment,” said Melissa Washington, SVP of Customer Operations and Strategic Initiatives at ComEd. “Building on the success of last year’s rebate programs, ComEd is pleased to launch another $100M that will help customers take steps toward adding at-home L2 charging, fleet EV projects for fleets of any size, and to catalyze more investment in building a network of regional public and private charging to accommodate the growing demand for EVs in northern Illinois.”
of over 200 new and pre-owned EV fleet vehicles for municipal, business customers and school districts. More than half of the funds have been directed to low-income customers and to propel projects in equity-eligible communities.
Through its 2025 investments, ComEd is making $53 million in rebates available for business and public sector EV fleet purchases, including small businesses pursuing as few as one electric vehicle for commercial use, regardless of small-, medium- or heavy-duty weight class size; and nearly $38 million in rebates available to support infrastructure “make ready” upgrades needed for the installation of public and private Level 2 (L2) and Level 3 (DCFC) charging stations for non-residential customers. Residential customers will have access to nearly $9 million in funding to reduce the upfront costs of purchase and installation of adding at-home L2 charging—with rebates of up to $3,750 per charger.
The funding announcement follows last year’s first-of-its kind announcement to fund EV projects, with ComEd launching nearly $90 million for customers in 2024. Both 2024 and 2025 programs are made available as part of a state mandated program to help more customers take steps toward EVs, a result of the passage of Illinois’ landmark Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA), which calls for having 1 million EVs on the roads by 2030.
ComEd’s EV investments have coincided with increasing the rate of adoption of EVs in Illinois, with more than 126,000 EVs on state roads today, and the vast majority, more than 112,000 of them, driving in northern Illinois. In addition to funding programs, ComEd facilitates a number of initiatives to support customers in moving toward EVs, and to help communities achieve their own local and regional transportation net-zero emissions goals.
“On behalf of the Chicagoland new-car dealers, we applaud ComEd for propelling the widespread adoption of electrified vehicles in Illinois,” said Chicago Automobile Trade Association President Jennifer Morand. “As EV adoption continues to grow in Illinois, local new-car dealers are committed to supporting the revolution by offering a variety of all-electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles to consumers as well as provide much needed education.”
ComEd has teamed up with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus in developing a first of its kind training for municipalities and local governments, called the EV Readiness program, helping them to create local ordinances, safety, and infrastructure plans designed to accommodate the growing demand for EVs in their communities. Since that time more than 41 local governments in northern Illinois have been reached by the program, receiving assistance with creating local policy to ensure safe and effective regional transportation electrification.

All ComEd EV rebate programs put equity front and center, reserving more than half of the total funds for low-income customers and equity-eligible communities, and by offering higher rebates exclusively for low-income customers and for those located in or primarily serving low-income and equity-eligible communities. While EVs provide a wide range of benefits – from reducing emissions to generating fuel cost savings, to spurring economic development – the positive impacts on air quality benefit all communities, especially those most historically impacted by pollution.
Since launching its first ever EV rebates last year, ComEd has seen a significant increase in customer EV projects. To date, ComEd has funded EV expansion projects in more than 300 ZIP codes, helping to propel nearly 3,500 residential and commercial charging L2 and DCFC ports, public and private, as well as the addition
To ease the customer experience, ComEd offers Fleet Electrification Assessments, along with a make ready rebate reservation program, giving charging project developers certainty on available funding awaiting when they complete their projects, created a fleet EV Point of Sale program in partnership with more than 70 area auto dealers and manufacturers to qualify for fleet rebates for new and pre-owned vehicles at the time of purchase and established an EV Service Provider Network, comprised of over 84 local businesses certified to install EV charging infrastructure, providing customers a go-to list of contractors to call when they are planning to add charging infrastructure.
To review eligibility requirements and to apply for EV funding, customers are encouraged to visit ComEd’s website, ComEd.com, and connect with the company on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and YouTube.

I hope that after reading this column you will take action to protect your financial future by establishing a plan for your retirement.
Do you have a retirement plan? Although the participation rates in employer-sponsored retirement plans among Black workers improved by more than 4% between 2021(40.5%) and 2023 (44.9%), that still means that more than half of us have no retirement plan.
If you fall into the group without a retirement plan that works for an employer that sponsors a retirement plan - for, what are you waiting?
Often employer sponsored plans match your contributions. That is like getting a bonus. Why would you not want to receive a bonus?
Bren Sheriff
If your employer doesn’t offer a retirement plan, I encourage you to consider starting an Independent Retirement Account (IRA). There are several types of IRAs and it’s important that you get the one that best serves your needs. Ask an expert.
Mutual funds can serve as the basis of your retirement plan. There are so many types of mutual funds, all having their own benefits to meet the need of the investor. Make sure that you get an account that will not nickel-and-dime you with fees. Ask an expert to help you choose a fund that aligns with your needs.
An increasingly popular place to put money away for retirement is in an Indexed Universal Life (IUL) Insurance Policy. Of all the options for a private retirement plan an IUL has the greatest flexibility. It allows you to benefit from the stock market indirectly without the risk. Like a stock market account, you can adjust how much and how often you pay into your policy, there are also great tax benefits that come with IULs, and if you should die before you retire your beneficiary will receive a death benefit. Now that you know, I hope that you are now ready to explore the type of retirement account that best serves your needs.
Bye for now, Bren.

28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
These days are turbulent and trying. There is a concerted effort to destabilize and stoke fear with uncertainty and chaos. The very foundation of our society is being inspected for dismantling while those in the position to stop this unraveling do nothing or acquiesce to the orders given. This country’s path towards stability, equity, and sustainability will grow narrower and more obscure from here.
The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Our power lies in our willingness to collectively act on our desire for better. The coalition that emerges in this moment will be one stripped of performative allyship, racial and gender hierarchies. There is no way forward that maintains the status quo where the veneer of progress and identity politics is allowed to mask the reach of white supremacy and America’s caste system. We will need to deeply examine the fabric of this country with a spirit of naked authenticity ready to remake society in a process akin to South Africa’s truth and reconciliation commission.
31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Though the arc of history bends towards justice, if we are to experience that justice in our lifetime we must act. Act as a coalition of individuals who have each done the work to confront the hard truths of this country and our place in it. The power to compel righteousness is ours and we are strengthened by our faith and hope.
CHICAGO — Northern Illinois Community Initiatives, one of the foundations supported by Nicor Gas, is proud to announce its new name as Nicor Illinois Community Investment (NICI). NICI was formed with contributions from Nicor Gas and its parent Southern Company Gas in 2021 to directly support economic impact in under-resourced communities in Northern Illinois. NICI’s new name signifies the growing impact of the foundation since its inception, retaining the signature logo and shorthand acronym that are familiar to its partners, while more closely collaborating with Nicor Gas in economic and community development across Northern Illinois.
NICI fosters year-over-year growth by helping nonprofits, small businesses, entrepreneurs and community organizations establish strong foundations for continued success. The change to Nicor Illinois Community Investment represents NICI’s dedication to enduring, substantial contributions — an impact that NICI seeks not just to initiate, but sustain.
“Since our inception, NICI’s investments in small business and community resilience across Northern Illinois cultivates economic opportunity that has otherwise been inaccessible to communities like South Suburban Chicago, Rockford and Joliet — communities that have seen opportunities and resources lessen and shift throughout recent decades,” says Tovah McCord, Executive Director. “NICI provides the building blocks for these communities to thrive.”
Each year, NICI commits $1 million through $100,000 grants for high-impact community projects and other programs that support small businesses, entrepreneurs and other critical support for
communities in need of targeted assistance. NICI’s impact addresses three main areas: Economic mobility through programs designed to empower individuals and improve financial stability, commercial development through investments in local businesses that strengthen community infrastructure and small business support through resources and funding for small businesses, particularly those led by women and minority entrepreneurs.
“For 160 years, Nicor Gas has been an essential part of the Northern Illinois community, supporting its development and understanding its unique needs,” says Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas and NICI board chair. “The name change reflects the alignment of NICI’s philanthropic goals and the needs of Nicor Gas customers. We are excited about the lasting, positive impact that will result from this collaboration.”
NICI’s investment strategy is informed by insights from local leaders and community members, ensuring that its initiatives meet the evolving needs of Northern Illinois communities. NICI’s programs remain flexible and responsive to the unique challenges and goals of each community it serves. Through collaboration with Nicor Gas and Southern Company Gas, Nicor Illinois Community Investment will continue building on its achievements, scaling its impact to support a more economically resilient and equitable Illinois. NICI looks forward to sharing more of the foundation’s exciting plans for 2025 and outlook for the future of the communities it serves.

(StatePoint) Afterschool programs help children and youth thrive in school and in life. They provide homework help, opportunities to get active, and access to healthy snacks and meals. They help children develop friendships, meet mentors, learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), explore college and careers, and engage in community service. Through these activities, and more, afterschool programs help youth build the skills they need to succeed.
A million people across the United States are celebrating afterschool programs this fall, and rallying for more resources for them, as part of Lights On Afterschool 2024. More than 8,000 Lights On Afterschool events are taking place in every part of the country. In California, students are displaying wiggle robots, paintings and block-builds they created. In Colorado, parents are jotting down their dreams for their children and putting them in a Dream Box. In Florida, students are sharing what they learned about the migration of monarch butterflies. In Indiana, students are showing the PSAs they created about how substance use has affected their lives.
As a testament to the importance of afterschool programming, some big names are lending their support. Superstar Usher is serving as honorary chair of Lights On Afterschool this year, organized once again by the Afterschool
Alliance.
“Afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and give working families peace of mind that their children are safe, supervised and learning after school. Lights On Afterschool is a chance to showcase the skills students hone and the talents they develop at these programs,” said Afterschool Alliance executive director, Jodi Grant.

This year, Lights On Afterschool comes as funding for programs across the nation, provided from federal pandemic relief, winds down. These funds have helped afterschool programs meet rising costs and provide support for millions of youth. In recent years, Congress has failed to significantly increase funding for 21st Century Community Learning Centers, the chief federal funding stream for afterschool and summer learning programs.
“There aren’t nearly enough afterschool programs to meet the soaring demand,” Grant added. “For every child in an afterschool program in our country, four more are waiting to get in. We urgently need greater investments from all sectors so all students can benefit from the essential supports afterschool programs provide.”
