Support Our Local Businesses A New Year’s resolution to shop local.

W

e owe much of what is great about this city to the businesses that provide us so many local options for dining, entertainment, shopping and professional services. My New Year’s Resolution is to do more business with Chamber members and locally — as it continuously gets harder on our businesses to compete with online options. I want to share with you two stories that show why shopping local is so important. A Chamber member recently told me how she had scheduled Blue Chip Pest Services, a Chamber member, to come spray her house. On the day of the appointment, she told the service technician that her husband was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack. He could spray outside, but she would not be home for the appointment. After the appointment, Blue Chip sent her a card saying they were sorry to hear about her husband. They also enclosed two Dierbergs gift cards and mentioned that she might want to use the store’s new delivery service while her husband was recovering. That’s the kind of personal touch you get from a local company! I witnessed another example of the generosity of our local businesses at the Chamber’s Winter Festival. Christine, one of the owners of Cocoon Home Consignment, won a large-screen TV and donated it back to the Chamber to give to a nonprofit. We identified HavenHouse St. Louis, which provides overnight housing for families traveling to St. Louis for medical care. They were able to use the TV in their community room.

Stories like these underscore for me why we need to patronize our local businesses. Not much of a shopper, but enjoy getting out? Maybe you were at our Spring Golf Tournament — which was so successful that we added a Fall Golf Tournament. Our annual Pumpkin Run attracted a record 1,300 runners and raised nearly $35,000. To quench our Nora Amato community’s thirst for runs that are flat, fast and fun, we are adding a Spring Run on April 21, 2018. Orange Theory Fitness is our top sponsor. (I wonder what color the t-shirts will be?) In 2017, we celebrated the 30th year of our Faust Park Summer Concert Series. I am thrilled to announce that Wildwood Roofing & Construction is the top sponsor of our 31st Annual Summer Concert Series, which kicks off June 5, 2018. One event I’m very much looking forward to in 2018 is our 6th Annual Casino Night on Feb. 2, sponsored by Crown Vision, which will also showcase some of our local restaurants with “A Taste of the Chesterfield Chamber.” All these events have one thing in common: They are sponsored by local businesses. Parkway Central Comes to Puerto Rico’s Aid By Wesley Henshaw

Schoolwide drive collected and shipped 7,678 pounds of supplies to the island.

W

hen Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, millions of Americans lost their homes, power and basic necessities. For many staff and students of Parkway Central, the destruction was too much to sit by and watch. “You feel absolutely committed to do something to help,” said Joseph Bradley, Parkway Central orchestra director. “Any way you can, no matter how big or how small.” For Bradley, the storm damage was especially difficult to watch. Bradley is originally from Puerto Rico, and many family members were on the island when the hurricane hit. Bradley has since evacuated his family to safety, but he is all too aware of the devastation on the island. He described the sheer destruction of the hurricane, noting that the wind alone was so much stronger than they could have predicted. “We saw concrete houses that were completely broken,” he said. Immediately following the storm, the Parkway Central community rushed to help. Student clubs — including Project Help, PCH Players, the International Club, classes for English Speakers of Other Languages, and Spanish classes — organized a schoolwide drive called PCH Unidos por Puerto Rico. The drive collected donations of money and other

goods at the school Oct. 16-20. “We wanted it to go right there — immediately, where 100 percent of what we collected is going to go to people,” Bradley said. The drive amassed a grand total of 7,678.9 pounds of supplies. Water accounted for 4,201 pounds, and 3,068.7 pounds were boxes of food and supplies. The drive also raised $1,550.46, which organizers used to buy water filters. The supplies were to be sent to Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Bradley’s hometown. Rural areas such as Mayaguez have not been receiving nearly as many supplies as urban areas, such as San Juan. “San Juan is overflowing with donations,” said Nicole Voss, Parkway Central drama teacher and a leader of the drive. “We need to get these supplies to the rural areas.” So many goods were collected that original delivery plans had to change. The group had made plans with the Greater St. Louis Business Aviation Association, or GSLBAA, to load a plane and fly the donations to Puerto Rico. However, as the drive collected upwards of 7,500 pounds of supplies, the price tag to ship the goods by air rose to a staggering $16,000. Instead, PCH Unidos por Puerto Rico decided to ship the goods by sea with the help of Air, Land & Sea Express — while GSLBAA and Wings of Hope, the aviation nonprofit based at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, helped raise money for shipping. This new plan cost less than one third of the original, at $4,726.47. The shipment arrived Dec. 1, about a week after the group’s goal of delivering the supplies by Thanksgiving.

Wesley Henshaw is a sophomore at Parkway Central High School and reporter for the student newspaper, Corral.

n 1878, Herman Stemme (1862-1926) left his parents and two of his siblings in Prussia and traveled to the United States to join his sister, Minnie, and brother, Charles.

The Stemme family has helped shape Chesterfield history for five generations. By Ann Chrissos

Minnie met Herman in New York City and discovered that her brother had only four cents in his possession. She purchased him a railway ticket to St. Louis, where Herman planned to join his brother in Lake, Mo. (situated around Olive Boulevard and Hog Hollow Road). Herman was determined to become successful in his new country, so he worked hard to learn English and American customs. He had no difficulty securing employment from Chesterfield-area farmers, and he carefully set aside money to buy his own farm. His first purchase was 170 acres in Bellefontaine, Mo. (situated around Olive Boulevard and Chesterfield Parkway), to which he gradually added adjacent acreage. He also became a vocal advocate for progressive farming techniques by serving as an active member and buying stock in the Creve Coeur Farmers’ Club. After establishing his own farm raising corn and wheat, Herman married his former employer’s daughter, Emma Kuhlmann (1864-

At a cost of $4,000, it was the most attractive house in the area and was furnished with all the modern conveniences. The house was located next to the Hoch-Rinkel Market where Charlie Gitto’s is today, and the Henry Seiler family lived across the street where the Shell station currently stands. Besides being a successful farmer, Herman also was active in education, church affairs and politics. He served as the clerk for Bellefontaine School, which was located on Conway Road, along with George Burkhardt, the president, and Henry Seiler, the director. He also was one of the 17 original founders of St John’s Evangelical & Reform Church, located on Olive Street Road in Bellefontaine, and he helped raise $1,644.97 for the construction of a parsonage for the church. He remained an active member and generous supporter of St. John’s until his death. He became politically active when August Kasebaum ran for St. Louis County Collector of Revenue. Herman joined 13 other men in providing financial backing chesterfieldmochamber.com

for Kasebaum’s campaign, which resulted in his election on November 8, 1910. Herman Stemme retired from farming after he achieved his goal of financial independence. He is buried at St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery, along with his wife Emma and many of their children and grandchildren. Stemme Drive off Swingley Ridge Road was named for the Stemme family, and the Herman Stemme Office Park on Conway and Swingley Ridge Roads pays special homage to Herman. Years ago Chesterfield was a vibrant suburb of a greater metropolitan city. It was a major civic, market and religious center affiliated with an ancient capital city of earthen pyramids that stretched from modern day St. Louis, through East St. Louis, to the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. In “The Great Pyramids of St. Louis: An Ancient Metropolis,” author and lifelong Chesterfield resident, Mark Leach, explores the mound-building culture centered in downtown St. Louis a millenium ago — and the Blake Mound & Cave site and Dampier site in Chesterfield.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, accounting for 1 in 3 deaths annually in the U.S. From 2010-2014, heart disease was the leading cause of death for women in St. Louis County, accounting for nearly 1 in 4 deaths during that time. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke. Yet, only 1 in 5 American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. Dance Your Way to Better Health By Carol Enright St. Luke’s Hospital Day of Dance is a free event where women can discover easy steps to better health through an energizing morning of dance and health screenings.

H

ealth-u-tainment. That’s the term Spirit of Women hospitals have coined for educating women about healthy living in an entertaining way. St. Luke’s Director of Community Outreach Darla Wertenberger puts it in simpler terms: “We make things fun.” “When you’re educating women — and they come together with their friends or their sisters or their daughters — they’re apt to learn more and retain more and walk away with more information, if they have an enjoyable time doing it,” she explains.

St. Luke’s is the region’s only Spirit of Women hospital — a national network of hospitals that makes women’s health a priority — and its signature event is the annual Day of Dance. A healthy party At the first Day of Dance in 2009, event organizers chesterfieldmochamber.com

worried that no one would hit the dance floor. But those worries quickly flew out the window.

“It’s like a wedding reception. People dance the entire time, and they just have so much fun,” Wertenberger says. About 1,200 women participate in the event, now celebrating its 10th year, but upwards of 1,600 register, so organizers have had to close registration every year. Wertenberger says one of the event’s goals is to “increase awareness that exercise can be fun.” Day of Dance always features Jazzercise, Zumba, cardio hip hop, yoga, and Pilates, but attendees also have a chance to dip their toes into unfamiliar waters by trying out AFROETICS, the

NIA Technique, Buti, Tai Chi and belly dancing. The demonstrations are short — 20-30 minutes each — and Wertenberger stresses that they are for “any level of fitness.” “The women can try a new thing that they 22

didn’t know if they would like, before they actually go to a gym and try it there,” she says. “There’s something for everyone.” Screenings can be surprising The event offers free health screenings to test glucose and cholesterol levels, pulmonary function, blood pressure and BMI — and the chance to speak with a doctor. In some cases, these screenings have been a wake-up call to women who came to the event with no real health concerns. St. Luke’s Education Coordinator for Community Outreach Gloris Xynos, who is also a dietitian and certified diabetes educator, performs blood sugar screenings at the event. She recalls one woman in her 50s who stopped by to get her blood sugar tested just to see how the morning’s exercise had impacted it. “She had no health concerns — she just came out of pure curiosity. She considered herself to be fit and embracing a lot of wellness and healthy behaviors, and her blood sugar was elevated,” Xynos says. “We had an A1C screen (glucose test) done on her, and it put her in the range of pre-diabetes. Of course, she was not happy about it, but she followed up with her primary care doctor and it did come out that it was a verified case of pre-diabetes.” This prompted the woman to make some significant lifestyle changes, especially in her diet. “After she came to one of our community classes on pre-diabetes, she met with a dietitian and she fine-tuned her diet plan — because she was adamant about not progressing into type 2 diabetes,” Xynos says. “For her, it was a big surprise because her previous fasting glucose and her last annual physical had been normal.” This woman’s experience is exactly @chesterfieldmochamber

what the Day of Dance is all about, according to Wertenberger: “This is an event to increase awareness and, once they find out what they need to work on, give people the tools they need to do something about it — and have fun at the same time.”

“It’s a very inviting, welcoming place for diverse women,” Xynos adds. “You’ll see every single age, every single color, every single body shape represented. And I think that’s one of the things that keeps people coming back.”

Growing with Flying Colours By Mary Shapiro

The $1.5 million expansion doubles the size of cabinetry workshop and makes way for 50 new employees.

T

o deal with increasing growth and prepare for more, Flying Colours Corp. KSUS, based at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, has begun its first phase of expansion. The firm was scheduled to move into its new facilities on Dec. 18 at 527 Trade Center Blvd., at the end of the Spirit of St Louis Airport runway. With facilities in Canada, the United States and Singapore, the global aviation services provider, founded in 1989, offers services that include aircraft interior refurbishment and modifications, heavy chesterfieldmochamber.com

maintenance, exterior painting, special mission modifications, and avionics installations for midto large-sized business aircraft. Dave Stewart, vice president/general manager of the firm, said the company has been locally based at 657 N. Bell Ave. in Chesterfield for about 25 years. In 2009, Flying Colours acquired JetCorp Technical Services. In 2013, JetCorp was rebranded as Flying Colours Corp. KSUS. (KSUS is the airport code for Spirit of St. Louis Airport.) “Due to growth, we’ve been in about three to four locations on the Spirit property

over the years,” Stewart said, adding the project will include the new 40,300-square-foot building, the upgrading of several back shops, a doubling in size of the cabinetry workshop and a workforce growth of 30 percent. “Work started on the new building on Sept. 1, and we should start production on Dec. 18 at the new facility,” he said. Having been there for about 10 years, the site on North Bell has three hangars in about 50,000 square feet of space. That facility is used for aircraft maintenance and refurbishment. Stewart was born and raised in Canada but moved to St. Charles in March. “The new facility is replacing another facility we have on Goddard Avenue, which is now used for the purpose of the new site,” he said. we are working with a lot of original equipment manufacturers to supply them with cabinets for their new aircraft models,” Stewart said. He said the new site’s layout on Trade Center Boulevard has been designed to improve productivity and efficiency, and streamline the work flow. The state-of-the-art cabinetry workshop will more than double the size of the existing wood-working shop. “The fully refurbished facility will comfortably accommodate a Computer Numerical Control/CNC routing machine room for design located in an expansive machine room with a range of detailing tools, along with insulated buffing and sanding rooms, two new state-of-the-art paint booths with attached mixing rooms for varnish, and one new paint booth and mixing room for interior cabinet paint, as well as assembly, framing and finishing areas,” he said. “A unique feature of the new unit is the installation of an enclosed ‘curing’ room, used to bake the varnish and paint on to the cabinets, which will improve quality and efficiency.” Upgraded upholstery, avionics and engineering workshops will also be accommodated 28

This expansion phase represents a $1.5 million-dollar investment from Flying Colours which committed to the project after having won a significant set of cabinetry projects, for which work will begin in the first quarter of 2018, Stewart said. With the additional building, the Flying Colours Corp. KSUS footprint will exceed more than 100,000 square feet in total locally, he said. There are more plans for the future. Stewart said there’s a 95 percent chance his company will be doing a new hangar addition as well – they’re determining the exact location, but “the Chesterfield area is our first choice for this expansion,” he said.

Wings of Hope: 15 Years Flying U.S. Medical Missions By Carol Enright

The aviation charity has flown hundreds of patients to lifesaving medical care since launching its U.S.-based medical air transport program in 2003.

O

n May 25, 1965, Wings of Hope sent its first plane into the field. It was an auspicious occasion at Lambert Airport, attended by a cadre of religious and civic leaders, and culminating in the Cessna 206 taking off en route to its destination as a humanitarian plane in Kenya.

Over the next five decades, the aviation nonprofit based at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield would send upwards of 175 planes to serve poor communities in places like Tanzania, Belize and Nicaragua. But it wouldn’t be until Aug. 8, 2003, that a Wings of Hope plane would fly a medical air transport mission in the United States. This year marks the 15th anniversary of that very first U.S. flight — and the launch of the Wings of Hope Medical Relief & Air Transport, or MAT, Program.

Did you know?

The first airplane Wings of Hope sent overseas was delivered to a nun flying humanitarian missions in Kenya. The organization considers Sister Michael Therese Ryan the original Flying Nun.

Destined for Ecuador “The very first MAT flight was almost by accident in terms of its timing,” Larry Lemke, one of two Wings of Hope pilots on that first U.S. flight, recalls. “We heard about a young man in the Lake of the Ozarks who had been run over by a boat and taken to a local hospital in Columbia (Mo.). His original healing was a real problem, and he needed to come to St. Louis. He could not be transported, except by airplane, so we flew over there and picked him up.” Lemke and fellow pilot, Jay Rickmeyer, flew the young man in a Cessna 206 that happened to be available. But that wasn’t what the organization had intended for the newly rebuilt plane. “It was scheduled to go to Ecuador,” Rickmeyer remembers, “but before any plane leaves, we fly it around for 20 hours to make sure everything’s fine. We were just finishing up that flight test when we got a call from the hospital in chesterfieldmochamber.com

Columbia, Missouri.” The hospital specified that the young man had to be transported on a stretcher. The 206 had been outfitted to hold a stretcher as a medical air transport plane, so it was perfect for the job. It was also an ideal plane for training pilots before

sending them out to one of the organization’s international field sites. “We had a number of sites in the field, but we didn’t have an airplane here to train a pilot who was going to Guatemala or wherever,” Lemke, who was on the Wings of Hope Board at the time, explains. The board had been discussing using the 206 as a training plane, when the emergency flight to Columbia made clear an even higher purpose. “We said, ‘My goodness, we’ve got an airplane that we could use for a medical air transport program,’” Lemke recalls. Once word got out that there was a nonprofit in town flying medical air transport cases for free, the calls rolled in. MAT Program Today Today, the MAT Program is a far cry from the serendipitous conditions that precipitated that first flight. With four MAT planes, some 20 volunteer pilots, and a dedicated team of nurses and patient flight advocates, it is a well-oiled machine. In 2017, the organization flew over 200 individuals to specialized medical care at places like the Mayo Clinic, Shriners Hospitals in St. Louis and Chicago, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, MD Anderson and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. “The impact of what we do with the medical air transport program on the community we serve is just unbelievable,” Lemke says. “We carry some of the kids multiple times — and by multiple times, I really mean multiple times.” Children born with clubfoot, for example, can require a dozen or more visits to specialists for castings and, in some cases, surgery. “Once we take someone on their first Wings of Hope flight, we consider them part of our Wings 30

Rickmeyer tells the story of a little girl born with severe clubfoot. When Wings of Hope started flying her, she was “scooting along on her belly, because she couldn’t walk.” “The last time we took her, she was running around the hangar. She loved to see the airplanes. And we had to say, ‘Time to go, come on, climb in!’ — and off she went with us. Those are the memorable ones.” Both Lemke and Rickmeyer talk about the rewards of volunteering. “I think the good Lord called me to do what I can in terms of service for others, and this is a way to give back,” Lemke says. “You really get the feeling that life is good, and we have made a little bit of improvement for somebody else,” Rickmeyer says.

Unintended Tax Consequences of Generosity By Debbie Reid

W

hen it comes to large financial gifts, acts of kindness can cost more than expected. The real kicker is when the recipient, not the giver, is stuck with an unexpected tax bill. Beware of rewards when crowdfunding Online crowdfunding is growing in popularity, but it can have unintended tax consequences for the recipients. Recipients will not have to pay taxes on the amount raised Deborah Reid if donors do not receive something of value for their contributions. Offering something in return for a donation could result in recipients being taxed on the amount raised, because that transaction resembles a sale instead of a simple donation. If the campaign had more than 200 contributors and raised more than $20,000, the IRS may send a notice asking about underreported income. That does not mean the recipient owes taxes on the amount, but they should have records to show the IRS why the funds are not taxable. Avoid the gift tax When giving money to friends or family, the giver could have to pay a 40 percent gift tax on any amount exceeding $14,000. The $14,000 gift tax exclusion is per taxpayer, so a married couple filing jointly could give $28,000 to an adult son before the gift tax kicks in. They could also give $28,000 to their son’s wife. Gifts include selling something for less than its value or making interest-free or reduced-interest loans —e.g., helping somebody make a down payment on a house or repay student loans. Taxpayers can apply a portion of the lifetime unified gift and estate tax exemption to gifts that exceed the annual exclusion limit. As of 2017, this exemption is $5.49 million ($10.98 million for married couples). That means individuals can chesterfieldmochamber.com

generally transfer up to $5.49 million of wealth, either during life or upon death, before the gift or estate tax kicks in. Alternate, don’t split, a child’s tax benefits Divorced or unmarried parents may want to share their children’s tax benefits. This can be complicated. In some cases, IRS law determines which parent can claim the child’s benefits, period. No matter what, parents can’t split up tax benefits for the same child in the same year on separate returns. Instead, they can alternate years. If they have more than one child, they can share the benefits as long as they don’t split the tax benefits for the same child. There are more tax benefits to having children than just the child tax credit, dependent exemption or dependent care expenses deduction. Giving up a child’s tax benefits could also impact eligibility for the earned income tax credit, which can be worth thousands of dollars, or head of household filing status, which has its own tax benefits. Before making any big gifts, taxpayers should talk to a qualified tax professional to make sure they don’t cost more than expected or cause financial burdens for the recipients.
