We’re Here for You

I

n a recent communication to Rockwood families, Superintendent Dr. Mark Miles said, “I care deeply about the opportunities our students have inside and outside the classroom, and we are exploring avenues to engage in those safely.” This quote resonates with me. Switch out the words “students” and “inside and outside the classroom” for “businesses and residents” and “in our community,” and this explains exactly how I and my team have approached our work promoting our Chamber members and serving our Nora Amato community these past months. Our first big lift was figuring out how to pull off our 33rd Annual Chesterfield Regional Chamber Summer Concert Series at Faust Park, while keeping our community safe. I am proud to say, we did it! We postponed the start from June until July – but we started. We got the green light from the St. Louis County Health Department and delivered eight of 10 concerts (two were rained out). We had to get creative to ensure a safe environment – with social distancing, temperature taking, masks, limiting the number of guests – but we succeeded in providing a “normal” to our summer. Through eight concerts, we had to turn away just one person with a temperature, and our Chamber team and volunteers stayed healthy throughout the season. A BIG thank you to our business sponsors, concert committee, Chamber member volunteers, Faust Park and Chamber team and those of you who came out. By coming together in this way, your Chesterfield Regional Chamber was able to save this little piece of happiness – providing a much-needed Tuesday evening getaway for everyone. And even a night with fireworks! This is what the CRC is all about. We are here for you. Our community is why we exist. As an event-driven organization, current conditions could have crushed us. But we have continued to offer 425+ meetings/programs/events. Many are virtual, but we have not skipped a beat in reinventing our programs to make them relevant and communicating/promoting to our community what our businesses are doing. And our members

need your support now more than ever. Here are a few ways you can help our Chamber and local businesses this fall. • Purchase a first annual CRC Cookbook for $20. We have them at our office, online and at Dierbergs Marketplace. The proceeds go back into our local economy and businesses and support the Parkway Food Pantry, Circle of Concern and Rockwood Backpack Meal program. • Register for our 19th Annual Gumbo Flats Pumpkin 5K/10K Run, which kicks off at 7 a.m. on October 24 with a staggered, socially distanced start. The first 150 registered will be able to run/ walk. Everyone else will be virtual. If the health department lifts restrictions, we will allow for more. All 5K/10K runners are $25 and that includes a commemorative maroon long-sleeved tech shirt. Scan to register: • We also have a new shred event in the parking lot of our Chamber office on October 24 from noon to 3 pm. The event will feature paper shredding (up to five boxes per person), electronic device recycling, a food truck and sponsor booths. We have all weathered a lot, but my hope is that each of us can take some time to appreciate the small gifts each day brings. Our dog, Abner, coaxes me to slow down. Her Australian Shepherd qualities have her checking on each of us to be sure we are all “good.” Each evening, our backyard becomes our own private light show, a beautiful display of fireflies from the ground to the tops of our trees – and during the day the hummingbirds are nonstop. These things have been our oasis. I hope we can all recharge by enjoying the wonders that surround us this fall. We have a lot to be thankful for in our community – especially each other. In it together,

020’s travails continues, if not exacerbates, the divides that separate us. As I write this, the U.S. just passed 200,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus which was all but unknown in this country only nine months ago. Federal, state and local responses have been anything but coordinated. Federal stimulus is likely the only thing that kept the economy from falling deeper, and more importantly, kept households afloat. While the stock market is actually higher than a year ago, unemployment is at an overall rate of 8.4%, while Missouri is at 7%. Numerous businesses have closed, and others are mere shadows of what they once were. Traveling has been decimated, with reports of less than 30% capacity on flights, and even less occupancy for lodging. Restaurants have struggled, with only takeout and the benefit of warm weather allowing for outdoor, socially distanced dining providing some respite from the stay-at-home regimen that has replaced our not-toolong-ago very active lifestyles. But through all that COVID-19 has brought upon us, businesses, and their owners and employees, remain optimistic. The sense is that we, as a society and globally, will ultimately prevail, and most likely in the not too distant future. We will overcome this pandemic. Sure, life has changed, but we will continue, growing stronger, rebuilding our family and business finances, and enjoying those things that matter most – family and friends. It is the resilience of countless business owners that have impressed and fortified me through these last few months, recognizing that it will be just as long, if not longer, before we are all safe from the ravages that have sickened millions and have felled so many of our citizens. That hope, the optimism, that planning for a positive future – those are all signs that we will persevere and prevail. We will all want to go back to our shops, restaurants, boutiques and offices that we frequented before March chesterfieldmochamber.com

of this year. The way to assure that your return will happen is to support your local businesses today so that they are still in business when this pandemic is finally vanquished. Buy what you need locally. Thank the business owners and the employees when you see or talk to them. They’ll appreciate the kind words, and you’ll feel better too. It’ll feel “kind of normal,” which we all want more than anything else. Be safe. Be well. David Weiss

Ruth’s Chris New Chesterfield Location Will Be Area’s Largest By Mary Shapiro

R

uth’s Chris Steak House will be officially opening its largest restaurant in the St. Louis area in Chesterfield on Monday, November 16 at 16511 Wildhorse Creek Road in the new WildHorse development. The new facility also can boast being one of the largest Ruth’s Chris facilities, said Kristy Rans, owner and president of Prime Hospitality Group LLC. Her family-owned franchise is based in Indianapolis and operates eight Ruth’s Chris restaurants, including the Chesterfield property, two other locations in the St. Louis area, one restaurant in Arkansas and four in Indiana. Her husband, Ryan Rans, is chief executive officer of the company. “There are about 160 Ruth’s Chris restaurants worldwide, with about half of them owned by franchises like ours and the rest owned corporately,” Kristy Rans said, adding Ruth’s Chris was founded in 1965 in New Orleans, though her franchise company dates from 1994. Rans said the new, two-story Chesterfield restaurant will have 15,500 square feet of indoor space, 1,800 square feet of rooftop space, and 1,500 square feet of ground floor patio space. “We felt Chesterfield was a good location,” she said. “My husband and I felt there was so much growth in the western suburbs, and, with the number of rooftops, it made Chesterfield a perfect location. We also believe the pace of new development in the area will only continue.” The new restaurant will have about 125 employees and can seat up to about 450, she said. “However, we don’t know what we’ll be experiencing in November (due to the COVID-19 pandemic),” Rans said. “I cannot say with absolute certainty what effects there may be, but I can say with absolute certainty that we will be opening in adherence to all national, state and local regulations and restrictions, along with appropriate social distancing measures, as required.” The restaurant will feature outdoor dining, both on the rooftop and on ground floor patios. “There will be three bars, one on the main floor, one on the second floor upstairs, and one of our six private dining rooms also will have a bar,” Rans said. 12 Out & About | October-December 2020

She said those private dining rooms can accommodate groups ranging from eight to 120 people. “We also will have wine lockers and a double-sided fireplace,” Rans said. Plans are for the new restaurant to be open seven days a week. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and there will be brunch specialties in addition to the regular menu offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Dinner will be served from 4 to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 4 p.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Rans praised the restaurant’s wide variety of culinary offerings. “Our barbecue shrimp is very popular, with traditional New Orleans barbecue spices used,” Rans said. “For the wow factor, we’ll offer a 40-ounce Tomahawk steak. One of our most popular side items is roasted Brussels sprouts, served with honey butter and bacon. And, for dessert, our carrot cake is one my favorites.” She’s been involved in Prime Hospitality Group for more than three years, though she’s actually a lawyer by trade. “But my true passion is the hospitality business,” she said. “I enjoy making people happy. I enjoy that we can offer a best-in-class experience to our guests in a variety of settings. In the new Chesterfield restaurant, we can let people choose their own experience such as in the bar or in a private dining room, and we can help them customize it to an event or mood.” For more information on the new Ruth’s Chris in Chesterfield, contact General Manager Mark Bullock at markb@ruthschris.us. @chesterfieldmochamber

Every Organization has an Operating System – Is Yours Working? By Bruce Sheridan

O

ftentimes, I will ask entrepreneurs questions like:

1. Does everyone in your company know your vision? 2. Do you hold people accountable? 3. Are your processes documented? Some will just be open and honest and say “No.” Others will say “Yes.” I respond with, “That is great. Tell me how it works.” Often, as we get into it, they realize they probably should have said “No.” Many of the entrepreneurs I talk to are running companies that are turning a profit. As an entrepreneur running a profitable, or at least breakBruce Sheridan even, business you have an operating system. Basically, you sell something, fulfill that commitment, service the customer and collect your payment. However you pull that off is your operating system. Jeff Bezos left a good job on Wall Street, convinced his wife to leave and drive to California. Together they started selling books to people, mailing them out of their garage, servicing the customer and collecting payment. That was their operating system. Pause for one second and imagine the complexity of Amazon’s operating system today. I call it the 1-10-100. If you find an error in your operating system immediately, it costs $1. If you find the error several steps down the process or through an inspection, it costs you $10. If your customer finds it, it costs you $100. Errors are inevitable. How many errors you make and whether you find them at the 1, 10 or 100 mark is the difference between a good company and a great company. For over 30 years, I have been helping business owners improve their operating systems – and I can attest more than 95% do not chesterfieldmochamber.com

have their operating system running optimally. Three years ago, I read the book “Traction” by Gino Wickman, and I found one solution that I think very highly of: the Entrepreneurial Operating System, EOS®. EOS is a simple, complete operating system for running a small business. The EOS Model focuses on six components. VISION – If we were to walk around your business, we would we see every employee living your vision. PEOPLE – It is critical that every employee fit your culture and is in a position where they can excel in the role they are assigned. You must have both. DATA – A weekly scorecard with five to 15 leading indicators that paint a complete picture of the health of your business. ISSUES – This component requires you to keep track of your issues so nothing falls off your radar and have a disciplined approach for solving your issues at the root. PROCESS – Map your core processes and make sure they are being followed by all employees. TRACTION – This component requires you to select the top three to five Rocks, or priorities, for the next 90 days and use a proven, disciplined Meeting Pulse™ to complete your Rocks. Vision without Traction is hallucination. The theory of EOS is simple; the execution is difficult. It’s not about achieving perfection. It’s about making continuous progress toward strengthening your six components.

As president of Organizational Compass and an EOS Implementer, Bruce Sheridan helps entrepreneurs get the life they imagined when they started. October-December 2020 | Out & About

ccording to a Gallup study, it is estimated that chiropractors treat more than 35 million Americans every year. As the awareness of natural, non-drug health care continues to rise, more people are seeking chiropractors to improve health, maximize performance and restore function. Logan University Health Centers provide local community access to quality chiropractic care for patients of all ages at the Montgomery Health Center on Logan’s campus in Chesterfield as well as at the Mid Rivers Health Center in St. Peters. As a division of a top-ranked chiropractic training program, the Health Centers also present opportunities for student doctors to deliver evidencebased, patient-centered services under the direct supervision of experienced Doctors of Chiropractic. Students participate in rotations at a variety of health centers the University partners with, such as Affinia Healthcare, CareSTL Health, Paraquad and the Veteran’s Administration, to provide care for diverse patients including veterans, physically disabled and underinsured populations. Logan’s Health Centers employ state-of-theart technology and techniques for assessment and treatment of a range of patients with varied health and wellness needs. Pediatric Chiropractic Services To become a leader in addressing health needs of infants and youth, Logan Health Centers added pediatric chiropractic as a specialty referral service in 2017. Since then, Logan’s chiropractic physicians have raised awareness of pediatric chiropractic as a safe and effective treatment method. October-December 2020 | Out & About

“We are seeing both an increasing number of parents seeking conservative care for their children and more student doctors interested in specializing in pediatric chiropractic,” said Allison Harvey, DC, senior clinician and assistant professor at Logan. The University’s chiropractic physicians advise parents on many developmental topics. They also assist children through a variety of normal growth transitions as well as specific musculoskeletal disorders. For example, newborns may struggle with post-birth musculoskeletal issues or latching-on challenges. Young children often require care for posture, spine development and appropriate muscle strength. Youth can suffer pain from falls, repetitive use or sport-related injuries. Chiropractic care also plays an important role in caring for children with special needs. “Our goal is to help every patient achieve optimal health by not only providing treatment, but also educating parents on the cause of a condition and ways they can be proactive in promoting their child’s wellbeing,” Dr. Harvey said. Radiology Logan’s Department of Radiology provides valuable services to patients. In addition to planar imaging – the most common type of radiology study – Logan offers bone density, or DEXA, scans to help diagnose bone-related health problems and to assess a patient’s risk of getting them, and 18

Out & About | October-December 2020

diagnostic ultrasound studies that use sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body to help determine the cause of various conditions. It also receives referrals from area physicians to interpret: • Computed tomography (CT) scans that detect bone and joint issues, conditions such as cancer and heart disease, and internal injuries. • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that produces detailed images of organs and tissues. The Department of Radiology utilizes stateof-the-art imaging technology for optimal patient care. The Center for Diagnostic Imaging (CDI), one of the nation’s leading providers of high-quality diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology services, recently made a donation to support the upgrade of Logan’s X-ray system to a UMG/Del Medical radiographic system. “Faster imaging procedures, software enhancements, accurate digital measures and reduced need for re-takes are just some of the technological advancements our patients, students, clinicians, faculty and referral sources have all benefited from,” said Robert Kuhn, DC, DACBR, ART®, director of diagnostic services at Logan. In addition to cutting-edge technology, Dr. Kuhn believes there are many reasons Logan’s Department of Radiology is a leader in chiropractic imaging. “The breadth of services we provide, the number of board-certified chiropractic radiologists we have in our system, the experience of our head technologist, and the high quality men and women we have as residents and fellows in advanced diagnostic imaging all serve to place Logan at the front of the line,” Dr. Kuhn said.

Friendship Village Ope Living and Memory Ca Chesterfield Campus New facility increases levels of care and services offered to residents. By Mary Shapiro

n September 10, Friendship Village opened a four-story, 45-apartment assisted living and 15-apartment memory care neighborhood – offering a variety of specialized services to residents in a standalone building at the retirement community’s campus in Chesterfield.

The first floor is dedicated to memory care; the second floor has a bridge program, which is a transitional effort between assisted living and memory care and provides oversight to those who may need future memory care; and the third and fourth floors are dedicated to traditional assisted living. A round-the-clock nurse, one to two certified medication technicians, four to five certified nursing assistants and other nursing personnel will staff the new building, Ehrler said. The assisted living and memory care building was a part of a $201 million expansion to the Friendship Village campuses. Services offered in the new building include personal care plans, medication management, restaurant style dining, weekly housekeeping and a 24-hour emergency pullcord system. Amenities include a beauty salon, an outdoor terrace on the third floor, chaplain and chapel, theatre and a fitness center. “We offer four programs in the new building that enhance independence and aid in working with memory care residents and families,” Ehrler said. It’s Never 2 Late is an innovative computer system designed for assisted living residents to help with therapy, music, virtual travel and more through an interactive TV system. Virtusense is a fall risk test. When someone moves in, the test assesses if there is a risk so that supportive therapies can be put in place if needed. “We use a Montessori-inspired lifestyle approach for memory care residents,” Ehrler said. “This philosophy and way of caring for our residents focuses and supports what the residents can do, and not what they cannot do. We keep our residents engaged and as independent as possible.” A music and memory program is used for residents with Alzheimer’s, dementia and memory loss, and plays music from different time periods to engage and encourage residents’ memories. The memory care staff are specifically

trained to work with those residents with memory impairment. “Our memory care neighborhood is a secured environment with access to an outdoor, secured courtyard,” Ehrler said. “Assisted living is available to anyone needing assistance with everyday living activities,” she added. “We meet our residents on their terms and care for them while encouraging independence.” There is already a waiting list for the new assisted living and memory care neighborhood, she said. “We offer one- and two-bedroom assisted living units that each are 478 square feet to 655 square feet – our memory care apartments are all private, 314-square-foot studio apartments,” Ehrler said.

The big news about the 33rd Annual Chesterfield Regional Chamber Summer Concert Series is that it actually happened. Even with all the restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chamber was able to host eight concerts by selling a limited number of tickets per concert and requiring patrons to wear masks and social distance. The concerts were extremely popular with attendees – and we are so happy we were able to provide a safe and fun entertainment option for the Chesterfield community this past summer – including a fireworks display! Thank you to all of our sponsors, vendors and bands who joined us in making this summer’s concert series a good time for all!

Chesterfield Communi Raising Kids Experts offer advice on staying active – and social – during pandemic times. By Carol Enright

O

n August 26, the Chesterfield Regional Chamber presented the second in its Chesterfield Community Connection Series. “Raising Kids,” hosted on Zoom and broadcast on Facebook Live, featured community experts discussing mental wellness, social involvement and best practices for success in distance learning as families navigate the restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jim Mosquera of Sentinel Consulting moderated the expert panel which kicked off with Greg Davenport, executive director of the Chesterfield Family YMCA, talking about the Y’s Enrichment Program and finding balance between staying safe “and recognizing there are some things you can’t replace through virtual experiences.” Davenport discussed the need for families to stay active – physically and socially. The Y provides opportunities to safely socialize for youth, adults and families. Students, especially, need to stay active and still have that social interaction, said Davenport, either through organized programs offered by the Y and other facilities – shooting baskets, playing racquetball and swimming – or simply getting outside or hiking in a park. Davenport recommends families work with their students to mix in physical activity with online learning throughout the day. Mike Seppi, director of Parkway-Rockwood Community Ed, said the organization is offering over 400 programs for the community this fall. “The current pandemic has created challenges for families – and it’s not just children who are being affected. Parents, grandparents, all adults are facing challenges due to lack of routine

28

and isolation,” said Seppi. “We want to meet families and individuals where they are so we are offering a variety of online and in-person options.” Like Davenport, he said fall is a great time to take advantage of the outdoors – and the ideal environment for maintaining health protocols such as social distancing. In response to higher demand, Parkway-Rockwood Community Ed is ramping up its outdoor programming – much of which will be at Babler State Park in Wildwood. “We’re bringing most of what we’ve done in a school setting to an outdoor setting,” Seppi explained. In addition to sports and physical activities, Rockwood-Parkway Community Ed also will offer enrichment activities at Babler – like a STEAM Academy at the park. “For kids, it’s a time to put down electronics and get outside. For families, we have a whole variety of programs we’ve never offered before – things like bonfires, family hikes and a pumpkin fall festival.” Seppi added there will also be fitness programs for adults, including hiking, fishing and yoga in the park. Rockwood-Parkway Community Ed is also increasing its online offerings this year. “We’ve been surprised at the number of people interested in those programs. Enrichment, art and fitness programs. You may be home, but we can keep you active and engaged,” Seppi said. St. Louis County Park Ranger Laura MacLeod reminded residents that St. Louis County parks, trails and recreation centers are open – and there are plenty of fall activities planned.

ity Connection’s “We do a lot of personalized programs for Scout groups seeking to earn badges and home-school groups, if they want to learn to do archery or learn to canoe, for example,” she said. Scout groups are limited to 10 at a time, for now, but the Parks Department is “really, really flexible in offering individual programs.” “We can do weekdays, weekends, afternoon and evenings,” said MacLeod. Kennedy Brown, program director for A.R.C. Angels Foundation, addressed concerns that students are experiencing more anxiety and depression due to social isolation that has only increased with the onset of the pandemic. “We live in a generation that’s very isolating,” said Brown, referring to young people whose social lives are dominated by cellphones and social media. “Especially now that the activity is not up as much, kids aren’t able to socialize as much, this is causing even more isolation.” She stressed the importance of taking care of ourselves, mentally and physically – and offered parents some key warning signs that their children may need help. (See Out & About’s interview with Brown on page 35.) Dr. Keith Marty, superintendent of Parkway Schools, and Dr. Mark Miles, superintendent of Rockwood Schools, discussed how their districts are working with students, teachers and families to make virtual learning more engaging – and plans for both districts to eventually return to in-person learning. Both agreed that it will be awhile before large school gatherings will be safe again, but both were eager to get students back to in-person learning. On September 30, Rockwood students in preschool through second grade were offered the choice to return to in-person learning five days a week in their schools. District representatives offered some tips for helping students stay engaged with e-learning and creating screen-time balance: keeping a schedule, taking screen breaks, changing locations between classes, giving children time to move around – and maximizing longer breaks, like lunch, to walk around or get outside. chesterfieldmochamber.com

Gary Jones of Class 101 and David Huguelet of Huntington Learning Center discussed their organizations’ efforts to keep students on track in school and in preparation for college via tutoring and test prep. While many universities are going test optional to allay concerns about reduced testing opportunities during the pandemic, both Jones and Huguelet recommend that students still prepare for the ACT and/or SAT as they can strengthen a student’s college application and boost scholarship chances. Raising Kids was the second in the Chamber’s four part Chesterfield Community Connections series. Sponsors include Logan University, Friendship Village, Huntington Learning Center, Class 101, West Newsmagazine, St. Louis Community College, Parkway School District, Rockwood School District, Chesterfield Counseling Associates and Row House.

Women’s Jobs in Agrarian Chesterfield By Ann Chrissos, Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee

W

omen in agrarian Chesterfield worked long hard hours at a variety of jobs. Most wives cared for the children, cooked, cleaned, did laundry and mended clothes. Farmers’ wives also fed the pigs and chickens, gathered eggs, milked cows, and planted, weeded and harvested kitchen gardens. They canned fruits and vegetables, pressed apples for cider, made apple butter, carried food to the men in the fields, mixed and stuffed sausages, sawed logs and sometimes helped with the threshing. Sometimes women took jobs as teachers in one of the seven area one-room schoolhouses, worked as switchboard operators or nurses, or helped their husbands in their general stores. The efforts of women in the early 20th century helped make the Chesterfield area the successful community that it is today.

Chamber Chats: Mental Health of Young People During the Pandemic Each quarter, we sit down with one of our Chamber members to chat about a timely topic on the minds of our members and readers. In this issue we talked with Kennedy Brown, program director for A.R.C. Angels Foundation which works to prevent youth suicide through education and awareness, about how to safeguard the mental health of children during the stresses and social isolation brought on by the pandemic. chesterfieldmochamber.com

H

ow is the pandemic impacting the mental health of children? In recent years we’ve seen a lot social isolation from social media that kids are struggling with. I think being on a screen now more than ever with the majority of school districts all online or partly online creates such an isolating experience for them. They already weren’t necessarily getting those great connections – sitting at the lunch table on their phones – but now it’s worse than ever. Completely through a screen they don’t get to have those types of interactions and relationships with other students in class. It’s really isolating – and I think for some kids, if they’re doing work in their bedrooms by themselves, it can be very lonely. I think it is having a big impact on depression and anxiety rates. We don’t track that at A.R.C., but we’ve seen on the Crisis Text Line that they’re seeing increases of 30% talking about depression and anxiety. The good news is it hasn’t necessarily been suicidal thoughts but there are increased rates of depression coming from this. As a parent, what should I be looking for or worried about? What are the warning signs? I always tell people it looks different for every single kid and adult – and we don’t all display them – but four out of five youth will show signs of depression or suicidal thoughts before actually taking an act. What that looks like is changing of their personality, acting agitated, irritable or reckless. The big thing is isolation. Not caring about things like they used to, things that brought them joy, sports teams, their friends. Just be aware of their overall mood. If you even have a gut feeling, if something’s a little off, that can absolutely be a warning sign in and of itself. Also self-harm, use of alcohol and/or drugs How can I tell if my teen is depressed or just a moody teen? It’s a hard line to tow and I always tell parents to err on the side of them not being just a moody teenager – to check in on their mental health. When in doubt just ask. How can parents check in on their teens and begin a conversation – especially when they’re worried about them? Sit them down without any distractions, give them their favorite food, something to lighten the

mood, and have a conversation with them. Just ask them how have things been going? Don’t ask the typical how’s school? Let’s say they’re isolating more than normal – you could say, “I’m really worried. I’ve noticed you’ve been isolating yourself more than normal. Is everything OK?” Asking open-ended questions is a big part of it and letting your kid lead the conversation. Also don’t be afraid to ask questions. I think some parents are maybe afraid of the answer. I always say don’t be afraid to ask more and to dig deep. Ultimately, if a kid is struggling with depression, they want you to know. I struggled with depression as a teenager and I just wanted someone to know but I didn’t necessarily know how to tell them. It doesn’t have to be a big conversation all the time. It’s just opening up that conversation, so if anything did arise, they would feel comfortable coming to you about it. There’s no right way to start that conversation – and it’s different for every single kid. Just telling them you’re not alone in this, whatever it is you’re going through. It doesn’t have to be depression, it doesn’t have to be suicidal thoughts, it could just be them going through a hard time. We all go through hard times during life. My biggest piece of advice is come from a nonjudgmental place. If you’re noticing signs that your child may be suicidal, you need to be direct and ask them: “Have you had thoughts of suicide?” or “Have you had thoughts of killing yourself?” If you are noticing signs in your kids or someone else, you have to assume you are the only one that is going to reach out – so do! You could save a life. What can I do to help my child manage Zoom fatigue associated with online learning? At lunch time, get outside to eat. Or if you’re working at home and you’re able to eat together, make it a fun break – not just having them go back and eat lunch in their room. Some parents have made it a point to do something together as a family or do something outside when the school day’s over. Just getting away from the screen and getting away from that workspace they’ve been sitting at all day. How can I help my child maintain a healthy social life in this world of social distancing and isolation? There’s no perfect answer. I’ve heard of some people doing pods where they have a couple

kids their children are allowed to hang out with to limit exposure. Social distance at the parks. We have mental health groups where everybody brings a chair and we sit at a park and hangout. Anything outside. Encouraging your kids to Facetime with their friends. I think the problem is – and this was pre-Covid – we’ve gotten so used to texting people you don’t see their inflection; you don’t see their facial expression. I could be balling my eyes out while I’m texting you telling you I’m fine. I think it’s important, even though we have screen fatigue, that kids Facetime and Zoom with other kids. Where can I or my child go for help? Crisis Text Line is a resource for kids if they’re struggling but also if they notice a friend who’s struggling and they don’t know what to do. We’re all trained individuals and it’s all anonymous. We can connect you with resources. I always say it doesn’t have to be a crisis.
