Thinking About Buying A Vacation Home? Are you thinking of buying a vacation home? A place to escape to? A place for you to find some family time or down time and to relax? Here are three things you should consider before making that purchase. 1. Choose a home that fits your needs and budget. A vacation home does not have to be a second home. It can be your first home. You could be renting your primary residence and own your vacation home. Maybe homes are super expensive where you live and work, so you chose renting as an option. However, when you want to escape to a beach or a lake or the country you can escape to your own home. Determine your budget. How much money you have available to invest in the vacation home? How much money do you have for a down payment and closing costs.? How much the vacation home will cost you on a monthly basis. You want to be sure to include the cost of the monthly utilities, furniture, and maintenance of the vacation home. What your priorities are. 2. Determine where you want your vacation home to be. Do you love going to the lake to fish and

water ski? Do you enjoy going to a sandy beach and working on your tan, collecting shells, snorkeling, and offshore fishing? Do you have fun going to places that have culture, shopping, and great restaurants? Do you enjoy the mountains, hiking, and snow skiing? Maybe you like to escape to the peace and tranquility of the countryside? When choosing a vacation home location, you also need to consider logistics and the expenses and time it takes to get there. Would someplace that you could easily escape to on the weekend fit your needs or would you prefer a vacation home further away? 3. You should decide how you intend to use your vacation home. Are you retiring and want this vacation home to be your primary residence? Will this be a second home that you could escape to anytime you want? Maybe it will be an investment property? A vacation home that you rent out in order to subsidize the mortgage and then you use it for yourself when it is not rented. It could be a vacation home that its use changes over time. Maybe you use it as an investment property now and then when it gets closer to retirement you convert it into a second home and

then eventually a primary residence. It is always best to use a realtor that specializes in that local area of your vacation home. Different locations sometimes have special requirements, needs and/or ordinances. One example would be a waterfront home. You want to be sure to use a realtor that is familiar and experienced in working with the special needs of the area that your vacation home is in. If you are interested in a vacation home in Florida, especially the Sarasota, Bradenton, Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island, Siesta Key, Casey Key, Bird Key, Lido Key, and Lakewood Ranch areas, please contact Tryla Brown Larson at 941-962-1122 or RealEstate@ TrylaBrownLarson.com.

o you ever go on vacation and hope when returning to your daily routine that you keep a little bit of that spirit? On our 2019 summer vacation our close friend’s daughter, Emma, came up with a nickname for my husband when we were horseback riding in Colorado: Chuck Unplugged. It stuck. He truly was able to relax. He didn’t unpack his cell phone.
The more I think about it – it resonates with me. Everywhere I go – even on vacation – I have my cell phone on me and am “available” to answer a text, an email, a call. We tend to not have any downtime. What did we do 5 to Nora and Chuck Amato “Unplugged” 10 years ago when someone was going to call? We would wait by the phone - plan out when to be home, etc. My New Year’s challenge is to have time each week to be “unplugged” and live in the present. I don’t have to carry my cell phone with me when I get the mail or walk our dog. If I honestly don’t remember what year something happened, or how old an actor is, or the name of a movie, it is okay. I don’t have to look it up instantly. Growing up there was a rule in my family: no TV during dinner. This was when we connected with each other and found out how everyone’s day went and what was going on with each other. Too many times I get discouraged as people don’t visit with one another. They all go to their separate corners and are on their phones texting, watching YouTube, or working on their phones. Don’t get me wrong – information and technology are wonderful and amazing, But there is a time and a place. We need to learn how to balance it. In making the extra effort to unplug, I have rekindled relationships, found out what was happening around me and in the community, asked questions to find out what people think, and chesterfieldmochamber.com
observed trends that are happening in our own area. In the New Year, Chesterfield will continue to grow and evolve. Many great things are in store for our community, and I hope everyone takes time to enjoy what there is here. We have so many opportunities to live, work and play in Chesterfield. Each month there is a major event that the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce presents to the community and/or sponsors. We are rolling out community educational opportunities on a variety of topics. Please go to page 18 to see our Chamber Programs. We have our Chesterfield Economic Forecast on Jan. 22. In February, we have our 8th Annual Casino Night. And March marks our 30th Annual Business EXPO and – new this year – we are combining it with a job fair. Unplugged. It is something that will not be easy for me, but certainly it is a challenge that I am up for. Are you? See you in the New Year and with all your free time – the time you intentionally take for yourself – I hope to see you at Chamber events. Happy New Year!

The vision statement of our new five-year strategic plan charges us to ensure that every student loves life and finds success. In my first semester as new superintendent in Rockwood, I have enjoyed meeting many of our students and their families. I have visited each of our campuses and am impressed with the climate and culture in our schools. This Dr. Mark Miles school year has already been filled with meaningful and memorable educational experiences for our children. We are able to create these positive environments and experiences with the support of our Chesterfield community and the many communities that define the Rockwood School District. The engagement and guidance of our parents, grandparents and community members provide the solid foundation for our students. I sincerely thank you for sharing in our work to provide for the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of our children. I also am grateful to Chesterfield for providing me with another opportunity to partner in local events and services. As a Chesterfield Chamber board member, I look forward to giving back to the community that gives so much to our children. Are You and Your Spouse on The Same Page About Retirement?
By Halina J. Conti
R
etirement is one of the most important financial goals for many married couples. It’s something you may dream about and work hard to reach. But, even if you feel like you are on track in terms of meeting your financial objectives, there is an equally important factor to consider – are you both on the same page about your vision and plans for retirement? For example, what if your ideal experience in retirement is to travel, but your spouse is looking to stay local to be near family? Have conversations in advance of retirement to make sure you and your spouse are on the same page. Planning is critical The years leading up to retirement are an important time to compare their ideas and see if there are any obvious conflicts. Among the different topics to address: • When you plan to retire – if one spouse wants to work longer than the other, that may be fine if the spouse who retires earlier can pursue other activities in the interim. But if your plans are dependent on being together, you’ll want to come to an agreement on when your actual retirement together will begin. • Where you plan to live – this is a critical issue that requires a mutual understanding. Will you stay in your current home or geographic location? Do you plan to spend winters in a warmer climate? What are your thoughts on living abroad? Make sure you have a plan that works for both of you. • Your vision of a retirement lifestyle – what will keep you occupied in retirement? Are there activities that you will both enjoy, or are you fine with pursuing aspects of retirement independently? The more you define this in advance, the better prepared you’ll be. Try to find middle ground Don’t be alarmed if you and your spouse don’t have the exact same idea of how retirement should work for you. It isn’t unusual. What’s important is finding chesterfieldmochamber.com
ways to come to an agreement. That may mean each side has to give a little to make it work. Flexibility is also key. Once the reality of retirement sets in, either person’s viewpoint might change and that could affect your decisions. Be prepared for the potential that Halina J. Conti a medical event could alter your plans, as this is more likely to be a factor as you grow older. Your financial circumstances are also always a consideration. Have a discussion with your financial advisor about your retirement plans and try to have an agreed-upon strategy in place before you wrap up your working years.

Chamber Board Treasurer Mike Hejna is the moderator for the event which will feature five speakers, each tackling a different aspect of the region’s economic forecast. “We will have real-estate representatives from the office, retail and industrial sectors discussing pricing and terms for the participants. We will have discussions on relevant projects in the Chesterfield/West County marketplace that have either happened or are going to happen or are in process,” said Hejna. “We will have an economist talking about the macro economy, sharing what they’re looking at and thinking – and how the submarket of the St. Louis region fits into that.” Without stealing the thunder of the event’s expert speakers, Hejna said attendees will come away from the experience feeling positive about the economic outlook for Chesterfield and surrounding communities. “The Chamber and its members continue to be bullish about the economy in West County and the Chesterfield area,” said Hejna. “We’re very enthusiastic about the opportunities in the area.” Small and medium-sized businesses and entrepreneurs are the primary audience – and stand to benefit most from attending, said Hejna.

The first hour-and-a-half of the program will be the five-speaker panel, each sharing his or her particular area of expertise with Hejna posing questions, as needed. The second half of the event will be a happy hour with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, during which attendees may “talk to any of the event presenters and network with other attendees,” Hejna said. “It’s a good place to meet and greet, and sell your product,” he added.

The Satchmo’s Experience – Gastropub with a Touch of Creole By Carol Enright
W
hen Benjamin Brown says he learned the restaurant business from the ground up, he’s not kidding. “Freshman year at Mizzou, who happens to be my next-door neighbor in the dorm? It’s this guy Shane Mahoney who I used to have all these classes with in 8th grade at Crestview Middle School,” Brown recalled. “So we became friends again, and I got a job at Harpo’s in Columbia as a door guy – and he got a job about a week later.” The two worked their way up through the ranks – from working the door, mopping floors and scrubbing toilets to cooking and bartending. “We learned every aspect of this business together, starting from the ground up,” Brown said. Today, Brown and Mahoney are co-owners of Satchmo’s Bar & Grill in Chesterfield, and Brown said that early experience has paid off. “It doesn’t matter if we’re short a cook, a busboy, a host, a hostess or server – or even if you need a plumber last minute right in the middle of a dinner shift. If something comes up, you learn that when you’re the business owner you have to be able to wear every hat and be able to jump into that role.” Brown views his role as supporting his staff in doing their jobs. And their main job, according to Brown, is delivering on what he calls “The Satchmo’s Experience.” That experience starts with the name. “With a name like Satchmo’s, I think Louis
Armstrong, I think New Orleans,” said Brown. “So I wanted to tie American food with a little bit of a Creole, Cajun touch to it. I wanted to create a place that had a fun, casual atmosphere but still have chef-prepared food and hand-crafted cocktails that some might expect to find at a more high-end restaurant. If we were on the East or West Coast, people might refer to us as a gastropub.” Brown said this combination of a relaxed setting featuring foodie-worthy menu items “is all about exceeding expectations.” “Nothing feels better than when somebody comes in expecting just fried bar food – and you get to blow those expectations out of the water.” Every Thursday is “Burger Night” where $4.95 buys guests a burger (made using a unique Guinness steaming process) and fries. On Wednesdays, “Steak Night,” $8.95 buys a hand-cut sirloin steak and baked potato. Patrons craving something that transports them to the Big Easy can try the authentic home-made gumbo, gator bites, jambalaya or shrimp and grits. Harkening to its Louis Armstrong namesake, Satchmo’s features live music Friday and Saturday nights. “When you have a great band in here on a Friday or Saturday night, and the place is packed and everyone’s singing, you get such a great energy,” said Brown. “There’s no more rewarding feeling than when you’re busy and you see your team working hard – they’re doing things that are making you proud and the customers are all having a great time. That’s really what it boils down to.”

Dance Your Way to Better Health By Mary Shapiro
O
ffering a morning of dance and fitness demonstrations, music, health screenings, health information and more for women of all ages, the 2020 St. Luke’s Hospital/Spirit of Women Day of Dance – featuring a Rhythm Nation theme – is set for Saturday, Feb. 22 in Chesterfield.
The free event takes place 9 a.m. to noon at the DoubleTree Hotel & Conference Center at 16625 Swingley Ridge Road. Mary Pfenning, a registered nurse and director of community outreach and Spirit of Women Network coordinator at St. Luke’s Hospital, 232 South Woods Mill Road in Chesterfield, said that the reason for the event – and all of the organization’s community outreach – is that the nonprofit hospital’s mission is improving community health. “But we want to make that fun and interactive for women and want to provide them with resources to improve their health,” she said. “We know that, by making women healthy, they’re able to do the same for their family.” She’s seen evidence that’s true, from the annual health information provided by participants and from screening results over the years. “We’ve been able to track those, and, this year, we saw a nine percent plus improvement in blood pressure of those participating from the previous year, as well as a two percent improvement in cholesterol,” Pfenning said. “We also asked a question about the frequency of exercise, and an almost two percent improvement was seen. People get motivated at Day of Dance – they begin to work out and learn new information to guide them to improve their health.” Attendance last year was 1,200, up from the year before.

“We expect at least that number this year, and already we are having people call us about activities,” she said. Pfenning said that Spirit of Women is a network of hospitals across the country that focuses on health education and educational resources geared to women. St. Luke’s has been part of that network for more than 11 years and is the only Spirit of Women hospital in the St. Louis area. About 16,000 women in the St. Louis region are members of the network. Membership is free, and members get a monthly emailed newsletter, a complimentary twice-yearly magazine with health information, various tips and resources, advance notice of special events and screenings and exclusive discounts at area retailers. To join, call 314-205-6654 or visit stlukes-stl.com/spirit. Free screenings at Day of Dance will include non-fasting cholesterol with glucose, A1C for those at risk with an elevated glucose level, COPD, stroke risk, pulmonary lung function, blood pressure and body mass index. Last year, 526 screenings were completed, Pfenning said. Of course, dancing is the fun part of Day of Dance, she admitted. Women can participate in dance sessions including cardio hip hop, jazzercise, belly dance, and buti yoga. Lower impact activities like yoga and Tai Chi, as well as Vitality Ballet, are offered. “Vitality Ballet focuses on stretch. It’s dancing done with an artistic edge with music and a focus on key muscle groups for posture and core muscle strength for seniors. A former ballerina who @chesterfieldmochamber
@ChesterfieldCOC
works with older adults focuses on balance and a workout that relieves pain while increasing energy levels,” Pfenning said, adding that ongoing Vitality Ballet classes also are offered at St. Luke’s Hospital. “Having the ability to maintain balance and flexibility is important for independence of older adults.” Another aspect of the event is massage therapy, provided through certified massage therapists at a low cost. “Attendees can purchase certificates that are extremely discounted, and, last year, we sold almost 700 massages at the event,” Pfenning said. A healthy breakfast is offered, including fruit, juice, coffee, muffins and yogurt. Feedback from participants is great, Pfenning said. “People tell us they love the event and bring their girlfriends, sisters and daughters, with some groups coming every year,” she said. “They can start their weekend off in a positive way, and Day of Dance motivates people to continue to find a fitness routine to fit their lifestyle.” Also, St. Luke’s staff enjoys volunteering, she said. “Dozens of physicians in various specialties and nurses and other health professionals will be there to help answer questions and help make navigating the health system easy,” Pfenning added. “When we first started the event in 2009 – so this will be our 12th year in 2020 – it started in February with heart disease awareness, and, while there’s a huge focus on that at this event, we also want to get resources and information to people about all aspects of their health.”

he community of Lake on Olive Street Road at Hog Hollow Road received a post office in 1871. The village was founded as Hog Hollow in the 1850s, but was officially renamed Lake in 1872. It was 18 miles from St. Louis and a mile marker was located in front of the post office.
From 1880-1905, the post office was housed in the SchaeperZierenberg General Merchandise. Postmasters included Charles H. Steinfeldt (1871-1872), Herman Schaeper (1880-1893), Anna W. Schaeper (1894-1897), and Ernst W. Zierenberg (1900-1905). Anna Schaeper was only one of four females to hold the postmistress position. The others were Ann Hinze also of Lake, Pearly B. Gray of Bellefontaine and Frances Leiweke of Centaur. The post
office closed in 1905 and was transferred to Bellefontaine. Zierenberg’s store and post office also housed a hotel, blacksmith shop, ice house, community center and later a service station. A one room schoolhouse was located in Lake as well. Gumbo, named for its rich silty soil which turned into gumbo mud when wet, was the next village to acquire a post office. The community centered at Olive Street and Long Roads. The post office operated from Dec. 26, 1882, until April 15, 1907. While Henry Wetzel served as postmaster, the post office was housed in his store on the southeast corner of the intersection. When George Glaser became postmaster in 1901, his home served as the post office.

No Excuses – Fitness Choices Abound in Chesterfield By Carol Enright
E
very year, another study comes out affirming what we already know about New Year’s resolutions: the most popular center on getting healthier and fitter. Most people – some studies say up to 80 percent – fail by the second week of February. A 2016 study from the University of Chicago (“Immediate Rewards Predict Adherence to Long-Term Goals”) shows that the best predictor of perseverance in achieving goals aimed at longterm results – such as better health – are the immediate rewards of sticking with those resolutions. Translation: More fun equals greater success.
That’s good news for Chesterfield residents, because they have a virtual cornucopia of fitness options from which to choose. If they don’t enjoy one, they only have to try another. The Chesterfield Chamber boasts more than a dozen members whose businesses support fitness and wellness. Almost all offer free or discounted sessions for people who want to test out the waters before making a commitment. To help our readers decide which might be a good fit for them, we asked our members…

Blue Ocean Fitness “SuperSlow Zone’s personallydesigned routines use a safe, slow-cadence exercise method stimulating the body’s muscle growth mechanism so the muscles grow during the 72-hour recovery period. All sessions are guided by a IACET certified personal instructor – and the protocol is good for all ages, works around injuries and health issues, and is an excellent post-operative rehab. Whether you want to improve your shape, become a stronger athlete, or stay strong, flexible and more independent as you age, SSZ supports a healthy active life.” – Larry Stough, owner, SuperSlow Zone
“Three things make Blue Ocean Fitness unique. First, we’re a personal training facility, meaning every person has a plan personalized to their goals and needs. Next, we combine strength, cardio and mobility exercises to give you a complete fitness program. Last, we’re a family that provides ongoing support, encouragement and accountability.” – John Farkas, owner, Blue Ocean Fitness
SuperSlow Zone

We support every client with a fun, supportive community and flexible plans to fit every schedule. Our clients are always blown away. OsteoStrong Chesterfield
Isagenix “OsteoStrong is not a gym, diet, supplement, pharmaceutical or medical treatment. We are a unique wellness center focused on skeletal strength conditioning. It literally takes just 15 minutes a week for our members to see improvements in bone density, posture, balance, strength and athletic performance, and joint and back pain. A strong skeleton truly is the foundation of everything else. I can’t tell you how many clients have told me it’s changed their lives.” – Erin Greiner, owner, OsteoStrong Chesterfield.
“What makes CAC special is the friendly, personal interaction between members, and members and staff. The variety of fitness options is unparalleled – tennis, swimming, Pickleball, fitness classes, yoga, racquetball, personal training, cardio, strength equipment, massage.
