Smile!

M

y favorite emoji is a smile. I’ve heard that smiles are contagious. It sounds funny but even with masks on you can feel a smile by the sparkle in others’ eyes.

I am soooo ready for spring, but as I write this it is the coldest it has been all winter. As I look at the snow covered landscape, the first thing that pops into my mind is to make snow ice cream and go sledding with my son, Anthony. So that is exactly what we do. During this pandemic, I have found, now more than ever, that we need to do things that make Nora Amato us, and the people around us, SMILE. My mom called me and said that four boys in the neighborhood showed up out of the blue and shoveled her driveway. She was smiling for days and called every one of us kids to let us know — which

made each of us smile. Contagious, remember? A close family friend remembered that my mom and dad liked his chili. He made some, dropped it off and visited with my mom. (And, yes, she was smiling!) By the time this issue goes to print, it will be officially one year that we have all been anxiously figuring out how to handle the stress of a pandemic. To help me visualize the light of what has been a very long tunnel, I decided to make a chain out of colored construction paper counting down to June 1: the kickoff of our 34th Annual Chesterfield Regional Chamber Summer Concert Series. Yes, it is officially happening — we are even adding four additional dates! We are limited as to the number of attendees again this summer, but we have kept the cost to $5 a person. We also are having our 4th Annual Blossom Bolt on April 3, in person and virtual with a visit from the Easter Bunny. Another reason to smile! Your Chesterfield Regional Chamber is working around the clock to bring our programs, resources and events to our community in whatever way we can — in person, virtual or hybrid. We do this through the membership dues of our businesses and sponsorships. What we ask of everyone in our community is to continue to shop, play, dine local and support these businesses with your dollars. If you want to keep our businesses open, stop in and purchase something. Tell your neighbors about your favorite community businesses. As you spread the word, share a smile. By the end of the day, your cheeks may hurt. But you will make people feel comfortable and less anxious — and the benefits to your wellbeing, and the wellbeing of our community, will be immeasurable. Now that’s something to smile about!

Nora Macalady Amato is the president and CEO of the Chesterfield Regional Chamber. Reach her at 636-532-3399 or email nora@ chesterfieldmochamber.com.

their support of the Chamber and sponsored our “Coping with COVID-19 Campaign” with our first-ever Chamber cookbook. They provided our volunteers/ interns with protective masks and continue to partner with our community events. Spirit of Chesterfield Award Benjamin Brown – Satchmo’s Bar & Grill Ben Brown has tirelessly supported the Chamber as a vendor at our Summer Concert Series for years. At the start of the pandemic, he contacted me and we put our heads together to propose some laws changing to help keep our restaurants in business and their employees working. Ben is continuing to support the community and has announced his candidacy for Missouri Senate. He embodies the “Spirit of Chesterfield” because he has had a positive cultural and economic impact on the Chesterfield community — and he represents the Chamber well! Task Master Award Lisa Graf – The Medelberg Team with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Alliance Real Estate Lisa Graf is a go-to individual who asks where she can help — and jumps right in. She volunteered for our 3rd Annual Blossom Bolt, our Summer Concert Series, our Spring and Fall Golf Tournaments and our Pumpkin Run. Lisa selflessly gives of her talents and heads our LEADS Group 3. She won the Task Master Award in recognition of her tireless efforts, energy and leadership among Chamber members. Service Award Jim Mosquera – Alliance Technology A BIG thank you to Jim Mosquera for chairing our Business Education Committee. Through his leadership, we quickly pivoted our new Chesterfield Community Connections to virtual without a hiccup. He emceed the events from the first in-person session 12

in March 2020 through the three virtual events that followed. Aging Gracefully, Raising Kids and Healthy Living were all well attended, and valuable information and connections were made. Jim also helped transition to our new chairperson for 2021. He is well-deserving of the Service Award which recognizes a member’s involvement and dedication to the Chamber. Volunteer of the Year Terri Bulejski – Old Republic Title Whatever event we are having, Terri Bulejski is there with a smile on her face and a “theme” to boot! Terri makes our golf tournaments top notch and ensures everyone has a great time. If you’ve seen the decorated snack cart at our golf tournament — Terri’s handiwork — you understand what I mean! Terri is Volunteer of the Year because she has gone above and beyond the norm in her service and dedication to the Chamber. Chesterfield Young Professional of the Year Kennedy Brown – ARC Angels Foundation ARC Angels Foundation is blessed to have Kennedy Brown on their team and invested in the cause — and so is the Chamber! Kennedy participates in several Chamber programs, and she continues to look for ways to communicate the Foundation’s message to the community. She is truly making a difference in our schools and among our youth, and educating all regarding their mission. We recognize Kennedy as Chesterfield Young Professional of the Year for her tireless work promoting and involving younger members through activities and programs in support of the Chamber.

Chesterfield Food Scene StackHouse — Where Everybody Knows Your Name By Mary Shapiro

L

ike the famous Cheers bar from the TV series, StackHouse Pub & Grill in Chesterfield is truly a place where everybody knows your name.

“We have a slogan — ‘Turning FirstTimers Into Regulars Since 2016,’” said restaurant owner Todd Myers. “We’re not just a regulars’ bar — we want to break the mold and focus on every person walking through the door. We treat everyone the same, whether they’re a first-timer or if they come in five days a week.” StackHouse was born out of the former Miller’s Crossing restaurant, then at 14156 Olive Blvd. in Chesterfield’s Hog Hollow neighborhood, Myers said. “Miller’s Crossing — where I was a regular, having worked in Creve Coeur and gone there for years to hang out, and where I knew a lot of the other regulars — went out of business in 2016. I bought the remnants of that business and opened it as StackHouse in June of 2016,” Myers said. “We took over the location and created a new menu. So, we already had a regular following when we started — it wasn’t like starting fresh.” The clientele is very local, he said. “Customers are mostly neighborhood folks, from a three- to five-mile radius, but we also get people from the St. Charles area, Ladue, Creve Coeur (we’re on the border with Creve Coeur), Maryland Heights and Town & Country,” Myers said. Normally his staff numbers about 30, and many have been with the restaurant since its opening. Myers, who previously worked in the restaurant industry and says this is his first 14

endeavor as an owner, calls StackHouse “an American pub style restaurant, though we’re varied — we offer barbecue, burgers, sandwiches, steak, pasta, fried chicken on Sundays, and even do breakfast on the weekends.” “I’m very impressed with Chesterfield as a community,” he said. “They are very supportive of the little guy.” “We do a lot of benefits with local organizations such as Incarnate Word Catholic Church and Green Trails Elementary School.” StackHouse offers carryout, curbside and delivery. Dinner specials include a $5 cheeseburger on Mondays, a $12.95 hand-cut filet steak dinner on Tuesdays, happy hour specials from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday and all day on Wednesdays, and a $15.95 fried chicken special on Sundays. A trivia night is held at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Every Thursday is $1 beer night. A popular lunch item is a grown-up grilled cheese sandwich which features pulled pork, multiple layers of cheese, and barbecue sauce. “Pork wings are very popular as are our smoked chicken wings — a top seller,” Myers said. @chesterfieldmochamber

Popular dinner items include barbecue platters, such as smoked turkey, pulled pork or brisket. StackHouse has 16 draft beer taps. “We focus a lot on local beers, and we have over 100 whiskey and Scotch selections,” Myers added. “We have over 60 bottled and canned beer selections. We have 14 high definition/4K big screen TVs 65 inches or greater for sports games. We have outdoor seating that also has a TV. During the summer, we’ll offer outdoor patio games like cornhole or Jenga. We do live music on Saturdays. And we also have plans to add a larger patio area once we return to normal business outside of COVID.” His favorite part of the business is the people. “It’s what I really enjoy,” Myers said.

Local High School Interns Seek Summer Experiences

experience a day in the life, and we have witnessed how influential mentorships can be,” said Emanuel Young, coordinator of the Project Interface program. Young expressed how thankful and appreciative the school district is to the business community that lends mentors and hosts students, and added that “it simply wouldn’t exist otherwise.” “This year, in particular, we are partnering with the Chesterfield Chamber to identify opportunities where our bright and capable students can learn and support local businesses during these challenging times.” For Summer 2021, the career areas of law, computer science, business and engineering are of particularly high interest. Could your business use some support with social media, market research or a fresh set of eyes on a report draft? Or maybe you’d like some admin support creating a spreadsheet or set-up for an upcoming customer event? “These are just a few of the projects that students have successfully completed for business partners in the past,” Young said. If your business has interest in hosting a student, consider that internships are:

or 30 years, the Rockwood School District has provided a unique opportunity for select high school seniors interested in “trying out” a career before committing after graduation. In that time, Project Interface has evolved into a full-scale career readiness model focused on developing students’ transferable skills such as research, communication and team collaboration.

The core and most impactful part of the program is the time students spend on site or remotely working under the guidance of a professional. Businesses work with the Project Interface team to design a project consisting of real world performance tasks with measurable objectives and deadlines. “Our students are eager to Gayla Sajben learn and are motivated to

ATTENTION READERS:

-Short Term - Most high school internships run 2-4 weeks during the summer months. -Unpaid - Students earn academic credit toward graduation. -Qualified - Students are baseline qualified through the coursework completed, activities, extracurriculars and other acquired skills as high school seniors. -Local - Students attend the Rockwood School District and reside in our community. “No doubt there are businesses out there that could use the support and we have students that are eager for authentic work experience—this is a win-win for all involved,” said Young.

60 Seconds to a Stronger You

W

ith the coronavirus pandemic requiring many of us to stay home and be more sedentary, Americans of all ages and activity levels are wanting to live and do more. Between choosing better diets, supplements, exercise, and new holistic technology — now, more than ever, we all can do just that. As we use our bodies over time, things change. Our bones become less dense, muscles get smaller, balance decreases — and our body begins to remind us by limiting our movement and agility. This can create pain, slow us down, increase our chances for Type 2 Diabetes, and prevent us from doing the things we love. Are you experiencing any of these Laura and Johnny Harper things? If you knew of a place that offered possible solutions to address all these things, but does not require exercise, pharmaceuticals, or a diet — and you only go to this place once a week for 10-15 minutes — would you check it out? Have you ever heard of mechanotransduction or impact emulation? Big fancy words, right? Simply put, they mean you’re able to put enough pressure on your skeletal system to trigger “osteogenesis” (another big word that means growth of new bone tissue). The thought of putting pressure on your bones might sound intimidating, even a little scary, but you put pressure on your bones every day. To grow new bone tissue, you need to put enough pressure to trigger this growth. How much pressure? For years scientists/physicians have known pressure is good for the bone, but never knew definitively how much pressure was needed, until now. A 2012 study, in which 5,000 participants were weighed and strapped on accelerometers to track and measure the amount of force/pressure they put on their skeletal system in all their activities, showed that in order to trigger your body’s natural adaptive responses for new bone tissue (on the lower part of your body, most importantly the hips) you need to be able to put 4.2 multiples of your body weight on your lower body. Even 4.2 times you can be a number you might think impossible, or to do safely. The good news: We now have a place in chesterfieldmochamber.com

Chesterfield Valley that offers sessions allowing you to safely put 4.2 multiples, and even more, of your body weight on your skeletal system in a controlled, safe environment with a trained technician. This “session” takes around 10 minutes and the total amount of exertion is about 60 seconds per session. That’s it — 60 seconds a week. The other benefits of these sessions are an increase in strength and balance, stronger connective tissue and ligaments — they can even reduce or eliminate back and joint pain. If you’re an athlete looking for a competitive edge, or someone concerned about your bone density, strength or balance, this new holistic approach could be the next move in your health and wellness goals. Call OsteoStrong today to begin or enhance your wellness journey.

Summer Concert Series Returns! Season kicks off with fireworks on June 1

O

n June 1, the Chamber’s 34th Annual Summer Concert Series returns to Faust Park with local favorite Butch Wax & the Hollywoods — and fireworks sponsored by J&M Displays. To comply with St. Louis County Health Department restrictions on crowd sizes, and to ensure everyone’s safety, concert attendance will be limited and tickets will be required. The $5 admission fee includes a face mask. “Our concert series takes a village to pull off, but it’s my favorite time of year,” said Chamber President and CEO Nora Amato. “This is how we, as a Chamber, give back to our community. Last year, we really had to get creative to make the series happen safely. This year, we will continue to abide by St. Louis County health requirements while we ensure that people living in Chesterfield and surrounding communities can enjoy what has become a muchanticipated summer tradition.” In addition to the season-opening fireworks, the 14-concert series will feature the popular Commerce Bank Kid Zone, food and beverages for sale and, new this year, a special concert on Aug. 20 to benefit the ARC Angels Foundation. Also back by popular demand are concert themes — including ‘80s and ‘90s Nights, Disco, Harry Potter, Superhero Night and Island Paradise. Concerts take place Tuesdays, June through August. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and music starts at 7 p.m. Purchase tickets by calling the Chamber at 636-532-3399 or visiting chesterfieldmochamber. com. The Chesterfield Regional Chamber is 45 this year. Established in 1976, the Chamber has seen a lot of changes, including our recent name change from the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce to the Chesterfield Regional Chamber in recognition of our growth through the years — and our new logo. The Chamber consistently ranks among the top in the region for membership.

St. Luke’s Hospital will relocate its COVID-19 vaccine clinic from its campus to a new location on the upper level of Chesterfield Mall near Macy’s. The relocation date is targeted for early April as the space is prepared to accommodate medical services. Updates at lukesvaccine.com.

Papa Bear Popcorn, a Chamber member located in Chesterfield, has more than 75 flavors. From the ever-popular Cheddar and Caramel to the unique Dill Pickle and Birthday Cake, Papa Bear has one of the most extensive offerings of popcorn flavors around. Extra Cheesy Cheese is Papa Bear’s signature flavor. Papa Bear’s uses heirloom seeds from Ella & Ollie’s Popcorn in Illinois, which produces extra fluffy popcorn with low hull — meaning less popcorn stuck in your teeth. After massive layoffs due largely to the pandemic, the group quickly grew. Today, 20 people volunteer with the nonprofit that serves more than 2,100 job seekers, career coaches, mentors, hiring managers and recruiters. The service provides free career counseling, resume advice, LinkedIn profile help, one-on-one virtual consultations and referrals from area recruiters and hiring managers. The list is created based on the input of employees who voluntarily provide anonymous feedback by creating a company review about their job, work environment and employer over the past year. Raising Cane’s scored an average of 4.2 stars on a 5-star scale — well above the average score of 3.5. Congratulations!

Bonhomme was founded in 1816, the stone church was built in 1841, and 1843 marked the first burial in the church cemetery. The cemetery is the final resting place of many early Chesterfield families including John Baxter (Baxter Road) and Isaac Woods (Woods Mill Road). The church needs $300,000 to save the cemetery. New Look, New Name — Same Mission By Nora Amato, Chesterfield Regional Chamber President and CEO

A

t the beginning of last year, our board made the decision to explore a name change and new logo.

Our membership has grown to over 700 strong, not all members hail from Chesterfield — and we are expanding. We needed a more inclusive name that was more indicative of our membership. So, the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce became the Chesterfield Regional Chamber. Our new name needed a new logo. In these past few years, the Chamber has changed. We needed a refreshed, modern branding to communicate who we are today and our continued mission as we move forward — but harkening to our rich history supporting our businesses and our community for the past 45 years. We worked closely with Black Raven, a great partner in this endeavor and a Chamber member, and narrowed down our options. Then we planned the big reveal. I love the bright green color and the image of a plant reaching up as it grows into, what I believe, is a tree. (We are a Tree City USA after all!) The three leaves represent our trifold mission statement: helping our community connect, learn and grow. The five black dots are “seeds” representing the five areas a chamber of commerce must cultivate — economic development, government affairs, networking, membership and business education. The dip in the oval (shaded green) represents the Chesterfield Valley, and the top is the area

around Olive and Clarkson. The circle represents the “regional” and community. Such a simple image packed with so much meaning! More than a new look, our new branding is an important reflection of our continued commitment to our community — and to you. Our businesses thank you for your steadfast support and partnership. We are looking forward to a great spring/summer season of programming and hope to see you all at our 4th Annual Blossom Bolt (April 3), 31st Spring Golf Tournament (April 26), and 34th Annual Summer Concert Season (June 1-August 31)! If you are interested in becoming a Chamber member (business, resident or volunteer), we would love to connect. Please give us a call us at 636-5323399 or visit our website at chesterfieldmochamber. com.

Coworking Company Supports and Welcome Break to Worki

A

A new company, based at Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, is flying high, thanks to becoming the wind beneath the wings of some entrepreneurs that are using the firm’s facilities. Glenn Turner is one of the principals of CAVU Cowork, open at 18336 Edison Ave. since 2020. It offers office space and other amenities for up-and-coming firms. Amenities include high-speed internet and Wi-Fi, lockable storage, a coffee bar, conference, meeting and private rooms, and more. There are daily and special reservation plans as well as individual and company memberships available. An aircraft hangar in the back of the building is available for large events, weddings, charity events, fundraisers and corporate gatherings, including rental of tables and chairs. “CAVU is an aeronautical term that means ‘Ceiling and Visibility Unlimited,’” said Turner, a pilot who formerly lived in Chesterfield and now is a resident of Marco Island, Florida. “The phrase is commonly used by pilots to describe the best and most desirable way to fly. It’s a fitting description

given our airport location and the desirable space we offer.” He’s also a partner in Black Raven digital marketing and website agency, one of the firms using his CAVU Cowork space. Turner originally built the building in 2014 when he was involved in a firm called FireStream WorldWide, a software company focused on the petroleum industry which he sold in 2017. “In late 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, we started to transition the building to coworking space,” he said. He admits that, thanks to the location at Spirit, “we’d love to attract pilots and aviationrelated people to our space, but we’ll take any entrepreneurial start-up or any company needing cowork space to get their business launched or because it’s no longer convenient for them to work at home and they need one or more desks for any amount of time.” Chesterfield is a good location for the firm, Turner said. “We’re attractive to businesses already in the area as well as to individuals who come and go from the airport, so it’s convenient for them to pop in,” he said. “We draw from suburban West County, where quite a few companies have long had remote workers or needed them more recently due to the pandemic.” He said some work was needed on the building before it could open last year. “We had to pivot a little to make the building a safe coworking space with special cleaning and sensitivity to social distancing — it was a @chesterfieldmochamber

transition from a building I built to house FireStream and aircraft to coworking space,” Turner said. CAVU Cowork presently has about five companies in the space with about a dozen people, he said. “But we can accommodate up to 40 people at any one time and as many companies as needed,” he added. The company is just beginning to market itself to the public. “We paused our marketing plan until we felt it was safe,” said Turner. In addition to Black Raven, another business using CAVU Cowork space is Teambot, a software company for sports teams. The firms at the site have become a community managing the space, Turner said. “They help receive new users of space,” he said. He praised the opportunity to give people “a clean, fresh, modern space to work in where there is a sense of community with other businesses — but, at the same time, it’s an easy way of getting unstuck from a home-office situation.” Turner said rental costs aren’t expensive, starting at about $400 a month for a desk, with a discount for a six-month commitment. Conference rooms can be rented by the day or hour but are free for tenants of the building to use. He admits he was very sensitive to concerns people may have in the height of the COVID pandemic, but he’s pleased to carry out plans that were in the offing long before the pandemic. “We are getting people here from all over the St. Louis metro area — from Soulard to Lake St. Louis to Ballwin to Manchester and all over,” Turner said. “Our space is a good place to bring customers, and people tell us our space is conducive to chesterfieldmochamber.com

entrepreneurial and creative thinking.” Jimmy Valere, director of sales and marketing for Black Raven, agreed. “We got space there because we wanted to collaborate with various other startups and thriving local businesses by working in close proximity. It became very convenient to establish strong mutually beneficial relationships — and it’s conducive for learning,” he said. Black Raven formed and started working at the building in June 2019. “We have desks for much of the team,” Valere said. “Every day, we utilize the back miniconference rooms for internal meetings which works great because each has a whiteboard and big screen TV. We also use the large conference room in the front of the building for client meetings. It’s worked really well because it’s large enough to accommodate up to 12 people and has a giant whiteboard and TV, as well.”

Increased Outdoor Activity Boon to These Chamber Businesses By Carol Enright

S

ince the pandemic has shrunk our entertainment options, many have turned to the great outdoors for safe, fun, recreational outlets. Anecdotally, most of us can say we’ve seen more people walking our neighborhoods and heading to the parks. The Outdoor Foundation and Outdoor Industry Association recently released a study confirming our daily observations: Americans have found respite from pandemic restrictions by increasing their participation in outdoor activities such as biking, trail running and hiking.

Total outdoor participation in the U.S. increased more than 2%, to 52.9 percent in 2020 from 50.7% in 2019. Big Shark Bicycle Company This comes as no surprise to Mike Weiss, owner of Big Shark Bicycle Company which has three locations including one in Chesterfield Valley. “What has spiked interest in bikes has been

families spending time together outdoors and a redirection in what people typically do. So if it’s normally camps and vacations and concerts, a lot of those activities were stopped in their tracks last spring and summer. I think everyone took a moment and said what can we do that meets the criteria of healthy and entertaining and safe and local?” said Weiss. “There’s been this new renaissance in, not just cycling, but the entire outdoor industry. People have rediscovered cycling and our hope is that it’s sticky — it changes some habits and people fall in love with it again.” The Department of Commerce reported that bicycle imports were up 49% by unit count in January 2021 compared to January 2020. While high demand for bikes has been great for business, Weiss anticipates “an extreme shortage of products” for the next year or so. “We know we’re going to sell 100% of what we bring in, but we want everybody who wants to start doing this activity to be able to do it. That’s the only bad part about this,” he said. Weiss had the foresight to build up his inventory when he saw the shortage coming last spring, so the store has bikes for sale. But a customer looking for a specific brand and color of bike may have a long wait. “People are going to have to be flexible,” he said. Not only is Weiss in the right business, Big Shark-West is in a prime location for people looking to take advantage of the Monarch Levy and its connection to the Katy Trail. Weiss said parking at The District or Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex gives bikers “access to adventure.” Good News Brewing Company A quick 8-mile bike from Chesterfield to Defiance will get you to the Good News Brewing Company, which is right on the Katy Trail, in about 45 minutes. Owner Dan Tripp has seen a significant uptick in bikers and hikers stopping at his ideally located microbrewery since the start of the pandemic — and business is booming.

@chesterfieldmochamber

“We had a really good year last year,” he said. “We had a huge increase in our sales from the previous year because of the Katy Trail, and people wanting to get outside and be safe.” It seems as if Tripp couldn’t have designed the place to be more Covid-friendly even if he had known what was in store when he opened this location in April 2019. The brewery is essentially a covered outdoor dining facility, surrounded by garage doors that can be opened in nice weather and closed when it’s cold. It has a rooftop deck and a large outdoor patio. “It’s a fun day to park at the brewery, bike to Augusta, then come back and finish the day off with beer and pizza,” said Tripp. An average biker can make the 8-9 mile jaunt to Augusta in less than one hour. Prefer a dry red to a Belgian white? Right across the street from Good News is Defiance Ridge Vineyards.

winery has been an ideal venue for accommodating customers during the pandemic. “We’re blessed that we are an outdoor business, and we have a pavilion that is a shared open space,” Schwerdt said. “We’re able to safely take care of guests which makes them feel very comfortable.” The layout of the property makes it easy for guests to customize their experience, Schwerdt added. “You can come in and do a tasting or stay for lunch or dinner. We have a really good farm-totable menu, and live music in the gazebo on Saturdays and Sundays. We also have a beautiful patio with an impressive view that cascades down into the vineyard and seats 300 comfortably. You’re welcome to bring blankets and chairs, if you want to sit closer to the vines.” Oenophiles or those who simply want to learn more about the wines can schedule a tour with resident winemaker Murph. Visitors can check out the vineyard’s mascot swan, Heath, who lives on the property’s lake. The vineyard even offers a house-made beef jerky that’s “the perfect graband-go snack for people hitting the Katy Trail,” said Schwerdt. Whether they’re looking for a relaxing day exploring the vineyards or a quick pit-stop during a long bike ride, Schwerdt said Defiance Ridge “wants to help people get out.” “The pandemic hasn’t been easy for a lot of people,” said Schwerdt, “and I think having a place to go — where you can safely socialize and enjoy the outdoors — can be a great way to refresh and recharge.”

Defiance Ridge Vineyards “We’re literally the first winery you reach coming into the wine country from the St. Louis metro area,” said Jenn Schwerdt of Defiance Ridge Vineyards. “People can hit us as their last stop going back to town after a day at the wineries or their first stop hitting other wineries.” Defiance Ridge is a popular meeting spot for bikers and hikers planning a day on the trails. “We’re right off the Katy Trail so we get a lot of people who bike or hike and stop in for a glass of wine, do a tasting — or grab a couple of to-go bottles,” Schwerdt said. Fleet Feet Andy Koziatek, running club coach for Fleet Feet, has seen a surge in people interested in hiking and trail running since the start of the pandemic. “You definitely see a lot more bodies out in the parks which is great,” Koziatek said. He’s also seen more people interested in joining the store’s Rock Runners program. “We have our core group who come year round, but it always seems like half our group is new folks,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot more interest from people who want to explore the trails.” For the most part, trail running is a pandemic-friendly activity. “From a social distancing standpoint, it’s easier to do it on trails than with your traditional road groups,” Koziatek said. “On trails, usually you’re single file or two people abreast, and typically

32

Out & About | April-June 2021

you’re going to give space to the person in front of you so you can see your footing.” And wearing masks actually has some welcome benefits during a cold winter run. “The face masks are a great covering so you don’t have to breathe the cold air,” Koziatek said. On most trails, “you might get away with wearing a road shoe in the beginning,” said Koziatek.

@chesterfieldmochamber

“But, especially if it’s really muddy out or rocky, your trail shoe is going to give you better traction, grip and protection on the trails than your road shoe would.” And there are a lot of local trails to check out. Koziatek recommends the Al Foster Trail in Glencoe, Lost Valley Trail in Defiance, Indian Camp Creek in the Wentzville area, and West County favorite, Castlewood. He calls Brommelswick Park in St. Charles “a hidden gem with a lot of easy access points.” “You can get in a 4-mile loop but you’re never too far from the road if you need to bail early.” “Another fun one is the Lewis and Clark Trail,” said Koziatek. “It’s no cyclists, strictly hiking and running, with some great overlooks of the Missouri River right along the bluffs by the Katy Trail.” Fleet Feet’s Rock Runners program caters to all levels — from “people who have absolutely zero trail experience to people who have been doing it for years,” said Koziatek. In a 12-week Rock Runners program, the group explores 11 different parks so it’s a great way to explore the local trails, he added.

Weddings in Old Chesterfield

By Ann Chrissos, Chesterfield Historic and Landmark Preservation Committee

W

hite wedding gowns were occasionally worn by wealthy European brides prior to 1840. However, the practice did not become popular among middle- and working-class brides until after the wedding of Queen Victoria of England. Victoria proposed to her first cousin, Albert, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and she chose the color and material for her bridal grown. She insisted on white Honiton lace from Devon, England, instead of the more fashionable Brussels lace and white Spitalfields silk from East London. Her choices made a big impression at her wedding on Feb. 10, 1840. English, European and American brides quickly emulated her. Nevertheless, the white bridal gown did not make an appearance in Chesterfield, Mo., until the end of the 19th century. Many Chesterfield brides continued to be married in dark-colored dresses with long veils or large hats until the 1920s when white became the norm. Although the color white became popular, the style for wedding gowns changed drastically from one decade to the next. However, all gowns between 1880 and 1960 tended to have high necklines and long sleeves. Chesterfield grooms wore dark suits or black tuxedos as their wedding outfits. Most early Chesterfield weddings were between area families as is evident in the following photos. They tended to be held in the bride’s home or in one of the local churches.

For more information about Chesterfield families go to, http://www.chesterfield.mo.us/historicalcommision.html or see CHLPC publications available for purchase at Chesterfield City Hall or at the Chesterfield Heritage Museum at Chesterfield Mall.
