Real Estate with Tryla Buying NEW or Purchasing An EXISTING Home? By Tryla Brown Larson with Consort Homes’ Dawn Thurman

Are you considering building a new home instead of buying a pre-owned home? I sat down with Dawn Thurman, Consort Homes’ Community Manager at Fienup Farms, the firm’s brandnew masterplanned development in Chesterfield, and here are some of the wonderful benefits she pointed out. When building your new home, you choose the layout and get to personalize it too! Your new home will have the latest floorplan designs to accommodate how you use your home. By personalizing your home, you’ll save time, money, and energy, instead of having to make updates such as changing out fixtures, repainting, bringing the kitchen into this century, or replacing old carpet or dated flooring. When building your new home, EVERYTHING is new! Your new home will be shiny and new from the freshlypoured foundation to all the operating systems. This is a huge cost savings to a new buyer since having to do fix-it work will be unnecessary.

When building your new home, you’ll save time and money! Your new home will free up time that might have been spent working on remodels, repairs, and renovations. Plus, your new home will be much more energy-efficient, saving dollars that would be spent on costly utilities. While building a new home may be slightly more than purchasing an existing home, NEW can save you thousands of dollars for years to come through peace-of-mind, time, comfort, and energy savings! If you are interested in building a new home contact me. It won’t cost you anything to have me assist you through each step of the process. A home is one of the biggest purchases you will make in your life and it’s good to have a professional realtor by your side. Do you have a real estate question or topic you would like me to address in an upcoming column? Then I would certainly love to hear from you. You can always reach me at 314-910-2286 -- e-mail: TLarson@bhhsall.com -- or at facebook.com/trylabrownlarsonandassociates

Spring Break Connect. Learn. Grow.

E

veryone needs to take a spring break. Vacation or staycation, we all need to take a breath. It honestly, for me, is a time to recharge, reexamine, reenergize, refocus and hit the reset button. This spring break was no exception: it was just what the doctor ordered. At our vacation house there were little pieces of wisdom in sayings on the walls. The one that stuck was “Today is a gift.” Many times, we look at our schedules, programs, events, etc., and wonder how we can fit it all in. If I only had more time… If I wasn’t so busy… We sometimes have to push ourselves to try new things. It is then that we find out what we have been missing and what we need to make time for. April is very busy for the Chamber: we have our 2nd Annual 5K and Sprout Sprint Blossom Bolt sponsored by Orange Theory Fitness and our 29th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by Lindell Bank. May is filled with business education opportunities and the graduation of our 17th Leadership

Chesterfield Class. (We have “graduated” over 315 individuals!) And June is the kickoff of our 32nd Annual Summer Concert Series. If you haven’t made it a tradition to come to our concerts, this summer make it a goal to come to one. Take the time to get out and enjoy our community. Last year was our first year with a Commerce Bank Kids Zone — an area Nora Amato with multiple activities for kids — with the Upper Limits portable rock-climbing wall, Pinot’s Palette face painting, a balloon twisting artist, the Bubble Bus, Sports Fusion booth, AmpUp Action Park booth, Raising Cane’s lemonade, and Sylvan Learning Center activities — not to mention our great lineup of bands, food trucks and concessions with Chick-fil-A sandwiches, Satchmo’s, The Stackhouse and Walnut Grill! It is all thanks to our Chamber members and our generous Chamber businesses that sponsor our concerts and make all this community fun possible. Take the time to visit our sponsoring companies and show them that their contribution to the community matters to you. We now have LEADS groups running. These are industry-specific groups dedicated to networking and sharing referrals. Our Chesterfield Young Professionals (CYP) group has formed two sand volleyball teams playing on the six new sand volleyball courts in the valley. Our Connecting Chesterfield Women has had two meetings and now meets monthly at Walnut Grill in Ellisville. 2019 is off to a great start. If you want to be a part of something in the community, join the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Start by inquiring how you can pay it forward, give back, take part in, be present and share your talents. Remember – today is a gift. Enjoy it!

Nora Macalady Amato is the executive director at the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. Reach her at 636-532-3399 or email nora@ chesterfieldmochamber.com. 10

Congratulations Chamber Award Winners! Letter from the board.

I

t takes a village to deliver the sheer number of programs, events, and our free 32nd Annual Summer Concert Series. It’s always difficult to select winners of our annual Chamber awards as so many do their part to add to the success of the Chamber. And much of our help comes to us unsolicited. It is so heartwarming to get an email asking how someone can donate their time, talent or treasure — often, from individuals who are not Chamber members, just Good Samaritan residents who want to help. These are the winners of our 2018 Chamber awards announced at our January 2019 General Membership Meeting: Chesterfield Business Person – Sandy Baum Sandy owns Color Me Beautiful and is active on many Chamber committees, including our Winter Festival, membership committee and Ambassadors. She volunteers at our Casino Night and our summer concerts, hosts a booth at our business EXPO, attends our membership blitzes and actively promotes the Chamber to others. Sandy also makes our beautiful ribbon and bows for our ribbon cuttings — adding a touch of class to these festive ceremonies! Business of the Year – DoubleTree Hotel Chesterfield (receiving the award – Bruce Winter and Jill Hudson) The DoubleTree Hotel has been a great partner to the Chamber. Every year we hold several

12

Out & About | April-June 2019

meetings at the hotel — and they never disappoint. The DoubleTree excels in customer service and hospitality, and the venue is an asset to Chesterfield. Spirit of Chesterfield Award – Kathy Kroupa Kathy joined the Chamber as a resident member and jumped right in. Her passion is our summer concert series and she is always there lending a helping hand. It is a perfect fit as she can hear the music from her home! Kathy is now branching out by volunteering at our Winter Festival and other Chamber programs. Task Master Award – Jesse Francis Jesse is the Chamber’s friend at Faust Park and the reason behind our successful summer concert series. We are getting ready for our 32nd Annual Summer Concert Series and Jesse makes it look seamless. He is there to assist in setting up and breaking things down — orchestrating the entire evening from start to finish. Jesse has participated in Leadership Chesterfield and continues to give tours and presentations on History, Culture and Art Day for the Chamber. He has a vast knowledge of Chesterfield, Governor Bates’ home, the Faust Home and St. Louis County Faust Park. It is fascinating — be sure to check out the county parks’ activities. Service Award – Eric Vogel As the owner of Walnut Grill, Eric continuously looks @chesterfieldmochamber

@ChesterfieldCOC

for ways to give back to the community — whether it is to our local police officers, our veterans, our public school athletic programs, or our Chamber. Eric also started the St. Louis Chapter of 100+ Men Who Care, a men’s group that raises money for local charities. Eric also recently increased his involvement with the Chamber by joining us a board member. Volunteer of the Year – Ken Shaw Ken is active in our runs and recruiting people to help out and/ or participate. He has participated in our Pumpkin Run for the past seven years and our inaugural Blossom Bolt run. Ken has also been a member of the golf tournament committees and volunteered to help for the spring and fall tournaments — even taking a vacation day to be there! Ken also participated in the Leadership Chesterfield Class of 2019. Special Recognition to Dr. Eric Knost and Bryan Voyles Although not official award winners, these two gentlemen deserve a special shout out for their support of the Chamber and the Chesterfield community. A big thank you to Dr. Eric Knost for his contribution as an ex officio of the Chamber’s Board of Directors and his tireless care of Rockwood School District children for the past five years as Rockwood’s Superintendent. As he leaves the district at the end of this school year, we wish Dr. Knost well! Massive thanks also to Brian Voyles, who chaired the Chamber Board for the past two years (2017-2018). Brian provided continuity and stability for the Chamber as he navigated the city’s changing retail landscape as past general manager at St. Louis Premium Outlets and, most recently, past general manager at Chesterfield Mall. Congratulations and thank you to the winners! You exemplify the spirit of service and generosity that make our Chamber and this community a place we are proud to call home.

Changing of the Guard at Rockwood School District

District bids farewell to Dr. Eric Knost and welcomes new superintendent from Cincinnati

R

ockwood School District Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost has been the district’s top leader for the last five years focusing on unity, excellence and relationships. In October 2018, he announced his retirement at the end of this school year.

Knost believes the relationships between teachers and students are at the heart of learning. He has focused on smaller class sizes and being a champion for students. Under Knost’s leadership, the Eric Knost district passed two bond issues, funding more than $164 million for innovative learning throughout the district. This includes STEM additions in all four high schools, a 1-to-1 technology program, and innovative learning centers in all Rockwood elementary schools. Soon after he arrived in Rockwood, he was cited in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as a “Top Confidence-Boosting Leader” in our metropolitan area. The Rockwood school community lauded its superintendent for being an effective communicator who is positive and clear about his goals for the district. This connection built trust and proved to be valuable when the school district area was impacted by natural disasters through major flooding. The Rockwood school community watched as its superintendent filled sandbags, boated to flooded buildings and managed the restoration process. Another major victory for Knost was a district-owned school bus fleet that provides students with safe, efficient transportation. Since its implementation in 2016, Rockwood school bus service has received 100 percent safety ratings from the Missouri Highway Patrol, as well as saving the district almost half a million dollars each year compared to contracted bus service. The Rockwood School Board has been supportive of their district leader. “We are sincerely grateful to Dr. Knost for his chesterfieldmochamber.com

service to our school community,” says School Board President Loralee Mondl. “When Dr. Knost arrived in the district in July 2014, he shared a message of unity, and he has stayed true to his vision and brought us so far in this short time. We wish him and his family only the best as he begins the next chapter in his life.” Beginning in October, the school board conducted a national search for the district’s next leader. Rockwood community members provided input on the characteristics and qualities they wanted in their Mark Miles next superintendent. After an extensive recruitment process, Dr. Mark T. Miles was selected

as the next Rockwood superintendent. Miles is the current superintendent of the Indian Hill Exempted Village School District in Cincinnati, Ohio, a position he has held since 2012. During his seven years of leadership, the school district earned top honors — and, in 2019, it was recognized as the sixth best public school district in the nation by Niche. Prior to this position, he served as the deputy superintendent in the Park Hill School District in Kansas City, Missouri, where he provided direction for the district’s strategic planning, K-12 principal supervision and leadership development. Before becoming the district’s deputy superintendent, Miles served as assistant superintendent for school improvement, assistant to the superintendent and as middle school principal. Miles was a social studies teacher in the Columbia Public School District in Missouri prior to receiving his doctorate and moving into administrative positions. A Missouri native, Miles is eager to move back to his home state. “I thank the members of the Rockwood School District Board of Education for placing their trust in me to lead and serve our students,

staff, parents, and community members. I have admired Rockwood for years and have been inspired by this extraordinary community. As your next superintendent of schools, I believe it is imperative to honor the success of the past as we strive to shape our future.”

Chesterfield Residents Invited to Share Vision for Chesterfield

C

hesterfield residents are invited to look at the future of their city – and determine goals for what that future should be – through the Envision Chesterfield effort, now underway through a variety of projects. Envision Chesterfield is the city’s comprehensive plan update process, said Justin Wyse, director of planning and development services for the city. A comprehensive plan is a policy document that details the city’s long-term vision and goals, and outlines the steps necessary to achieve them. The plan is intended to guide growth and development in an organized, efficient, and sustainable manner. To do so, the plan looks to the future to anticipate trends and issues that could impact how growth and development occur. The plan is long range, focusing on the ultimate needs of the community rather than any pressing concerns of today. “There were minor amendments and updates completed on the plan in 2009; however, the last major update to the plan was completed in 2005,” Wyse said, adding residents are invited to join the discussion about the city’s goals for the future. “Public engagement is always an important component of any major planning process, and the legitimacy and validity of the plan itself relies upon an ongoing and effective community engagement process.” Wyse said that, while the comprehensive plan looks 20 to 30 years in the future, it’s important to review and update the plan in the interim to ensure the vision described in the plan is still the vision residents have for the community. Since 2009, many of the plan’s goals have been completed, and new opportunities have been presented, Wyse said. With extensive public participation proposed through Envision Chesterfield, residents will create a “playbook” for the city that outlines the steps needed to achieve a

22

community vision, he said. To help with this task, the city has hired consultant firm Town Planning and Urban Design Collaborative out of Franklin, Tenn. “We look forward to hearing from as many residents who want to get involved,” Wyse said. For instance, the Planapalooza event, which Wyse called “an intense, participatory design, and public input process,” was held from March 27 to April 3 at City Hall, and residents and business owners were invited to take part. Discussion topics included items such as transportation/mobility/parking, Chesterfield’s downtown, business and the economy, utilities and supporting infrastructure, neighborhoods and housing choices, and more. Wyse said future activities and events are being informed by the public engagement and input received during Planapalooza. More than 120 people joined the city and its consultant to find out more about the effort on Jan. 29, learning about the goals of the project and providing their ideas. As part of Envision Chesterfield, an art contest was held through March 20, and residents of

all ages were invited to participate and win prizes. Residents could either take a photo of their favorite building, park or space in Chesterfield or draw a picture of what they imagine Chesterfield could be like in 20 years. All entries were displayed at City Hall, with public voting and winners announced in early April. Also, the city had asked residents and families, neighbors, colleagues and friends to host or attend gatherings, such as over a meal or coffee through March 6, for an “On the Table one-month opportunity to explore how to work together to improve the quality of life and economic vitality in Chesterfield. All On The Table participants were invited to complete a short email survey about their conversations that will cover important issues and themes, big ideas, and what matters most to them. A report highlighting the survey responses will be issued, Wyse said.

K

en Poteet has enjoyed an exceptionally successful career in banking. But after founding Sterling Bank (his second bank) and growing it to $1.4 billion in assets in 13 years, he and his wife, Stephanie BahnPoteet, decided that whatever came next would have a higher purpose. “We decided that if he was going to start another bank, it had to have an eternal impact,” explains Bahn-Poteet, M1 Bank’s director of marketing and community outreach. “It wasn’t going to be to make money for himself and his family and the shareholders. It had to have a totally different purpose than the previous two banks. M1 was really birthed out of mission first: the more successful the bank is, the more we’re able to give.” M1 Bank opened its first branch in Clayton in 2018 and will open its second branch in Des Peres in April. And the bank is serious about its commitment to giving back. “We are committed to giving a minimum of 10 percent just to local St. Louis charities, and last year we far, far exceeded that,” says Corey Poteet, M1 Bank’s director and senior vice president. “M1 is banking on a mission. Our mission is to invest in charities and to use the platform

26

that we have to give the charities who don’t have the capacity the exposure that they need to spread their message.” To celebrate the grand opening of its landmark Des Peres branch, the bank ran a social media campaign called #PoweredByPurpose. From February 1 through March 30, anyone could go to the bank’s Facebook or Instagram pages and nominate their favorite charity — posting via words, photos and videos why their chosen charity deserved to win. The five charities with the most creative and compelling stories were moved on to a public vote on social media from April 1-15. M1 Bank will award $10,000 each to the top two vote winners at its grand opening ceremony on April 25. This is the bank’s first social media campaign to benefit local charities, but M1 Bank has already made a big impact on a number of St. Louis

charities including The Little Bit Foundation, the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry and The Kaufman Fund, a nonprofit that supports veterans and their families. In September 2018, the Poteets purchased a former church in North County and donated the 17,000-square-foot building to L.I.F.E. Arts, a nonprofit that uses music and the arts to provide underprivileged youth a pathway to leadership. The nonprofit was started by famed musician Brian Owens, a Ferguson resident who uses his art to uplift young people in his community. The bank is hosting a gala with Michael McDonald of Doobie Brothers fame in September to raise money to completely retrofit the campus. M1 prides itself on being a relationship-driven bank. “We’re looking at the whole relationship and the mission and the heart behind

it,” Bahn-Poteet says when describing how the bank approaches its investments. “We’re, of course, staying compliant but much more likely to come alongside and sponsor something that’s within our vision and heart for change for the St Louis community.” M1 is a full-service retail bank, but BahnPoteet says the bank is different in a few key ways. “Our national model allows us to place ourselves nationally, as well as locally. So we have, consistently, the most competitive deposit rates in St. Louis and in the Midwest,” she says. “We offer everything that a large money-centered bank offers, but it’s boutique banking with a very personalized component.” Another difference is M1’s focus on investing in affordable housing. “We are literally funding low-income housing nationwide, housing with dignity for people who can’t afford it,” says Bahn-Poteet. “We were involved with the rebirth of Ferguson. And we just recently partnered in financing a 100-yearold building in north Florissant called Civil Righteousness. It’s a historic coffee house at 100 North Florissant.” The Poteets’ commitment to serving the larger community is literally built into their 28

facilities. “In both of our facilities, we’ve created event spaces so we can host fundraising events for our charitable partners,” Bahn-Poteet says, adding that the Clayton location will be the primary location for charitable events. “We purchased three buildings — a street block — in Clayton for our national headquarters. We will have a 13,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor space, an architectural gem with 20-foot barrel ceilings. It almost looks like Union Station.” If what they say about good karma is true, the bank’s charitable work seems to be having some positive effects on the business side, too. In its first year under the Poteets’ ownership, M1 Bank ranked #87 in the nation in S&P Global Market Intelligence’s best performing banks with less than $3 billion in assets — that’s out of 4,619 eligible U.S. banks and thrifts — and ranked #9 in the state of Missouri in performance. M1 Bank’s Director and Chief Credit Officer McLane Poteet says it all ties back to the mission. “This is an unprecedented accomplishment for such a young organization, and further testimony to a culture driven by the power of purpose,” he says. @chesterfieldmochamber

One-Room Schoolhouses: Lake School

T

he village of Lake, Missouri, was located along Olive Street Road and Hog Hollow Road. Nannie T. Stevens, one of the residents of Lake, donated a plot of land for a school across the street from the Quathem property. A 25 x 60 foot one- room schoolhouse was constructed on the site in 1897. It was a white wooden structure with black shutters, six windows and a bell cupola. The interior contained rows of double desks, a blackboard, a potbellied stove, a cloak room, bookshelves and a teacher’s desk. Lavern Reising was the teacher in the early 1920s. By 1925, the student population had grown to 62, so the original school building was

32

By Ann Chrissos purchased by E. W. Zierenburg and moved diagonally across the street behind his Mercantile Store. It served as a storage shed until 1967 when it was purchased by Louis Gilber. Gilber donated the building to the Creve CoeurChesterfield Historical Society. It was then moved a second time to a park on Coeur de Ville Drive in Creve Coeur. The estimated moving cost was $1,600. Today, it serves as a museum to showcase life and education at the turn of the 20th century. After the first Lake School was moved, a new larger brick school was constructed on the original site in 1925. It served the Lake community until 1948, when it was consolidated with the Fern

Ridge District. The building was sold and converted into a private residence. Around 1900, Frank Storch donated an acre of land for a second Lake School to educate African-American children. It was located west of River Valley Drive. According to Dan Rothwell, “about thirteen children attended, mostly from the Brooks and James families. They were descendants of slaves who had lived in Hog Hollow (Lake) during the Civil War.” Nothing remains of this school. Chesterfield School also had a corresponding school for African-American students. It was located on Wild Horse Creek Road and was attended by the descendants of slaves. These

slaves had been brought to the Chesterfield area by the early settlers, like the Longs, Caulks and Bacons. Besides these community one-room schoolhouses, Chesterfield also had a one-room church school. The Old Stone Bonhomme Church on Conway Road was built in 1841. The ground level housed a one-room school and a small living area for the teacher. The teachers were generally men. Chesterfield’s seven oneroom schoolhouses, Bonhomme, Chesterfield, Chesterfield for African-American students, Bellefontaine, Lake, Lake for African-American students and Bonhomme Church school, have been replaced with the massive Parkway and Rockwood School Districts. Although this change is evidence of how much the population of the area has grown, it also indicates how the importance of education has stayed the same.

Chesterfield’s Hidden Trails

Take your next walk off the beaten path. There’s a saying in St. Louis: “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” That being said, spring is here — at least for now — and what better way to ring it in than by enjoying the great outdoors on some of Chesterfield’s best-hidden trails? They’re short, easily accessible, and a great way to get a taste of spring — while it’s still here!

1

August G. Beckemeier Conservation Area: Located on Olive Blvd. around 1.5 miles north of Faust Park, our first trail takes a careful eye to find. It’s well-hidden, and certainly well worth the drive. This 54-acre park was donated to the city of Chesterfield by Minna Waldmann in 1996; Waldmann’s father, August G. Beckemeier, purchased the land in 1905. The trail itself is a 0.7-mile loop along the side of a hill, overlooking the Missouri River and floodplains. However, this hidden gem will keep you on your toes in more ways than one. It’s not

from the parking lot. It’s definitely worth the trek, though, and offers 188 acres of nature to explore, including a medium-sized lake and a 1.9-mile trail that loops around it. The trail itself is very easy; it’s mostly gravel and entirely flat. There are also plenty of opportunities to stop, have a seat on one of several benches along the trail, or go off-trail for a more personalized experience. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and the park is open sunrise to sunset daily for all your nature-related needs.

3 overly traveled — which means you may find the trail all to yourself — and the path itself is secluded. With several sharp turns and steep sections, and a deceptively-placed scenic overlook off the trail, this is an easy hike, but it’s a good idea to keep an eye on children. Hours are 4 a.m-10 p.m. daily, so you’ll have plenty of time for hiking, bird watching and enjoying nature! River’s Edge Park: You’ll find this park near Chesterfield Outlets on the north side of the levee in Chesterfield Valley. You’d be hard pressed to stumble across it if you weren’t looking for it – it shares a parking lot with the outlet mall and can only be accessed by a nearly half-mile trail

Governor Bates Trail (Faust Park): Faust Park is a St. Louis staple and — from the Butterfly House to the St. Louis Carousel — a treasure chest full of unique things to do. One of the lesserknown attractions is the park’s historical side, which is highlighted by a scenic 1.1-mile trail. The trail runs along the back of Faust Park, from Thornhill Estate — the former home of Frederick Bates, the second governor of Missouri – to the Lamella Barn, a uniquely shaped German-patented barn and a symbol of St. Louis’ rich architectural history. The Governor Bates Trail itself is not a loop but can be connected by a 0.7-mile extension along the road. It begins near the Thornhill Estate with scenic views of Chesterfield Valley and dips into a small woodland valley before returning up to Lamella Barn. It’s not the most leisurely trail on this list, but it’s certainly got the richest story. Hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, and closed on Monday. @chesterfieldmochamber
