The Cheshire Community Band held its annual Independence Day concert July 2, but the performance had to be moved from the town green on Church Street to the Harmon Leonard Youth Center on South Main Street because of rain. Director Michael Pontecorvo waited inside an SUV at
the green to redirect concert-goers to the alternate venue. The schedule on the band’s website indicated that rain would postpone the event until July 3. Pontecorvo said the show was relocated rather than rescheduled because inclement weather was also expected the next night. “We’re probably going See Band / Page 2
Department of Correction graduates 156 Special to The Citizen
A total of 156 correctional officers graduated July 1 after 11 weeks of intensive training at the Maloney Center for Training and Staff Development. Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman made congratulatory remarks to the graduating class. World-renowned forensic scientist Dr. Henry C. Lee served as guest speaker. The event kicked off at 11 a.m. at the Maloney Center, 275 Jarvis St., where over 400 officers, family and friends packed the assembly room
to celebrate. The graduation began with beating drums and blaring of bagpipes as the honor guard marched in with flags raised. Deputy Warden Daniel Murphy served as the master of ceremonies. He explained how officers went through a seven-week training program before spending four weeks in onthe-job training. Training includes mock scenarios designed to prepare them for potential dangers. “The primary hazard would be the inmate population,” Murphy said.

“You’re talking about people who do not have too much freedom of choice; we tell them when they can eat, when they can come out, when they have to go in and that’s not a natural position.” Wyman praised the graduating class, saying “We need more and more people in corrections. It takes a certain kind of person to get into this.” She also thanked about a dozen graduates who served in the military. “Some of these men and women have done double
