A farewell to one of the best Record-Journal staff

Kristine Drust said it at the end of the softball campaign and her Cheshire coaching colleagues from other seasons — Sue Bavone of volleyball and Michelle Viera of basketball — would no doubt agree. As we bid farewell to Mia Juodaitis, we bid farewell to one of the best student-athletes to ever come through Cheshire High School. Local artist illustrates children’s book

Acclaimed artist Tony Falcone is well-known for his portraits, murals and sculptures: many of which are colossally grand in scale. For something completely different from his usual fare, Falcone recently collaborated with children’s book author Brenda Goodale. That partnership has borne a work of amazingly realistic

renderings, only this time in delightful illustrations that are of a smaller scale — small enough to hold in your hands.

The book is called "Mermaid Under the Bridge," and it is the sequel to Goodale’s first book, “The Pride of Perkin’s Cove,” in which a young boy named Jack glimpses a mermaid. Set in the small See Book, A4

Cheshire Garden Club celebrates 99 years of community involvement Cheshire Garden Club members gathered June 10, in the Conservatory at Elim Park in Cheshire to celebrate its 99th anniversary beginning with its foundation on June 17, 1920. The club has instituted a number of wellknown projects and events over the years, from scholarships to beautification contests. Many of these initiatives are ongoing. Here are a few of the highlights of club activities over the years. The club’s annual scholarship fundraiser is derived from the group’s Holiday Luncheon in December. Held at the Aqua Turf, it averages about 300 guests and features a prominent design program speaker and over 50 fresh green table arrangements made by club members. This event is now in its 39th year. See Garden, A4

After graduating No. 5 in Cheshire’s Class of 2019, Fang is heading to the University of California to study Business Management and Environmental Engineering. He had a dynamic career at Cheshire, both academically and on the volleyball court, where he manned several positions for the Rams as they made their run to the SCC championship and the Class M state title game. “Berkley was called upon to play several different positions for us this year and he was versatile enough to do well wherever we needed him to play,” noted coach

Sue Bavone. “He is the epitome of a student-athlete as he excels in both areas.” Fang was named to the AllSCC Second Team. He also played on the Mizuno East club team that won gold at the Northeast Volleyball Championships. Outside of volleyball, Fang was concert master of the Symphony Orchestra and vice president of the Young Democrats Club. He was captain of the Math League team and, as a sidelight, likes to perform magic. His GPA was no illusion. It was 4.879. See Scholar-Athletes, A4

coastal town of Ogunquit, Maine the sequel follows along on Jack’s adventure as he teams up with his black lab Koby on a quest to find the mermaid throughout the town and Perkin’s Cove. Falcone will hold a book signing of “Mermaid Under the Bridge” at Main Street Caffe on West Main Street, on Saturday, July 13 at 10 a.m. Falcone, and his wife, Judith Andrews, are Cheshire residents and he is a long-time teacher at Artsplace. He’s also proprietor of Falcone Art Studio, 81 New Haven Road, Prospect, and copies of the book will be available for sale there, as well. Falcone agrees illustrating the children’s book was different from what he is used to, but an experience that appealed to him. “The fact that this project was different is what keeps me going as an artist. Being an illustrator is challenging: you are trying to tell a story

through paintings,” he said. “I love to draw and paint and I love to use my imagination. In illustration, I can use both my love of painting and my imagination to create a story-arc, but I had never illustrated a children's book before. When this opportunity came along, I read the script, loved the setting of Ogunquit – which is beautiful – and saw the possibility of creating lots of fun paintings.”

Jay Halterman, boys track and field: This young man was so driven and accomplished in the classroom that he’s wrapped graduation requirements in three years with a 4.4 GPA. He’ll major in Computer Science in college. “Jay is a dedicated young man with an outstanding understanding of himself and his role a team player,” said track coach Allen Dvarskas. “He is hard working and willing to put in the extra effort to excel.” Halterman is an Eagle Scout. He’s been an All-State and All-SCC Scholar-Athlete. This is his first R-J ScholarAthlete award. Michael Papa, boys lacrosse: This senior midfielder was a veteran pres-

Falcone’s interest grew as he explored the Maine town with his wife, walking the Marginal Way and streets of Ogunquit and Perkin's Cove together with Brenda, Jack and Koby. He also took a lot of pictures and sketched on location.

“He (George) Googled my name, and found me on the Internet, and asked if I could restore the mural, which I did over two summers,” said Falcone.

The collaboration was also proving to be easy and productive. Both Falcone and Goodale shared a vision for the story. “She wanted a realistic approach,” he said. “The story – while centered on a ubiquitous mermaid – features actual people, places and landmarks in Ogunquit, Maine. My style, which is representational, really fit with her vision,” Falcone said. “Once I got into the script, it was very satisfying to immerse myself in the art and bring the written word to life visually. We both really had fun together creating this book – she was great to work with.”

Thus began an enduring friendship. So when Brenda needed a new illustrator for her second book, she asked

In all, Falcone produced 33 paintings/illustrations for the book. Some scenes were more challenging than oth-

The story of how he came to illustrate the children’s book is also a good tale. Falcone explains that the author and her partner, George, bought the old Lindsey Tavern in Wells, Maine back in the ‘80s, and then discovered a historic mural Falcone had been commissioned to paint for a previous owner of the tavern.

ence who also scored four goals as Cheshire boys lacrosse played its final season under veteran head coach Rich Pulisciano.

A Junior States of America participant, Pellegrino received Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony awards.

Academically, Papa graduated with a 3.199 GPA.

Pellegrino played four years of golf. She was co-captain this year and helped the Rams qualify for the CIAC girls state tournament.

“Mike is an excellent student-athlete who works extremely hard on and off the field,” Pulisciano said. “Mike was a big-time player for us.” Lucy Pellegrino, girls golf: Like fellow senior Jenny Wang, who you’ll meet in a moment, Lucy Pellegrino reached remarkable heights during her time at Cheshire High. Pellegrino graduated with a 4.683 GPA and will now pursue a degree in Veterinary Medicine. She was a member of the National Honor Society as well as Mu Alpha Theta, the

ers. “The Gift" was challenging “because of the perspective, and the dual motion of the bridge opening upward to let the single-masted ship sail through,” said Falcone. “There are many lines – the cables lifting the bridge, the rigging of the ship, and the hundreds of shingles that cover the outside of the bridge base,” he said. “Because I am a realistic painter, my mantra is ‘to get it right.’" Additionally, “detailed pastels are tedious to paint and need patience,” Falcone said. Falcone has a few favorites from his recent work. “I like the painting, towards the end of the book, of Jack and Koby sitting under a cedar tree, looking out at the sea. I also like the cover, and the centerfold of the mermaid with Koby.”

The Civics Committee devotes a couple of days each month driving around town to select the winners.

“The Mermaid Under the Bridge” had its formal release with a book signing on the first of June in Ogunquit. Asked if there is another book illustration project ahead, Falcone is not ruling it out. However, he does acknowledge that he’s always wanted to write and illus-

Nate Pisani, boys tennis: Nate Pisani is on his way to the University of Delaware to major in Nursing and Health Services after graduating Cheshire High with a 3.66 GPA .

Jenny Wang, girls tennis: Hopefully, in bringing up the rear of this story, Jenny Wang’s Scholar-Athlete accomplishments will stick with you. They are certainly impressive.

AWARDS

2019

Proudly serving all ages and abilities. At Valentin Karate, we’re working hard to help people all across our community challenge themselves and face life with more confidence than ever before. Our martial arts training is built on the skills of Tang Soo Do, a traditional Korean Karate form. We share this art with you one step at a time, helping you focus your mind and build your body to be stronger than you ever thought possible. In our system, you don’t have to be a pro to find success. You don’t need any experience at all. We work with people of all backgrounds and skill levels and we help everyone feel supported on the path to long-lasting success.

Come see us today and try it all out for yourself!

Divorcing, who pays for college?

In Brief Scholarships awarded

By Lisa J. Cappalli

The Women's Club of Cheshire Scholarship luncheon took place June 13. The Scholarship's were awarded to two individuals, both of Cheshire. Dung Le who plans to attend Southern Connecticut State University to pursue her career in social work. Jade Barnes, who plans to attend Endicott College to pursue her career in nursing. Each received a $1000.00 Scholarship. The Women's Club also awarded Stephanie Ferrall the senior center coordinator with a $500 check; Jane Richard's from the Animal Shelter with a check for $200 which she will give the feral cats $100 of and, April Duquette from the food pantry for $200. The Women's Club will resume their meetings again in September.

Do parents have a legal obligation to pay for college for their child? When the parents are married, they don’t. But when the parents are divorcing, the divorce laws demand that the parents consider paying those expenses and sometimes imposes an obligation to pay those expenses. Where the judge determines it is more likely than not that divorcing parents would have paid college or post-high school vocational school expenses if they had remained married, then the judge can make an educational support order obligating the parents to pay. The law says that the judge must consider the parent’s income and other obligations (including to other dependents), the child’s needs, own assets and earning capacity and other factors specified in the law. The parents have the right to present evidence on all those factors.

Healthy Communities Coalition Healthy Communitieis Coaltion is now going to be facilitated by the Chesprocott Health Distric and the Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. Through this partnership, we will be able to increase the scope of work and increase the health and wellness. All meeting dates are at Elim Park Place at 9 a.m. July 24, Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 23, and Nov. 27. Facilitated by Coalition Co-Chairs Dana Bartone and Kate Glendon.

Although the judge has broad discretion, there are limits. An educational support order cannot be made unless the child is younger than 23 and it cannot require payments beyond that age. The amount to be paid is capped at the cost of tuition, room and board, books and other fees at the University of Connecticut for a full time instate student when the child enrolls.

subject to a court order if they aren’t able to do so. It is also possible for the parents to agree that neither should be obligated to pay. In these situations, while the court usually honors the agreement of the parents, to protect the child, occasionally the court may not. The divorcing parents have the power to determine how to handle college expenses. Although their agreement is subject to court approval, courts are deferential to the agreement of the parents. If they don’t have an agreement, a judge will make the decision.

So that money is not wasted, the payments can be suspended if the child is not at least a half-time student in an accredited school pursuing a course of study appropriate to the child. The child must be in good academic standing and give the parents access to all academic records.

Divorcing parents owe it to themselves and their children to work toward the best result they together can achieve. The judge, no matter how careful and conscientious, cannot make a better decision that reflects the needs and wishes of the parents, than they could make themselves through care-

Some judges will not grant the divorce unless the parents have agreed to an educational support order. Others will not grant the divorce unless the parents agree to deal with college expenses later and are
