Kiwi Innovation
In the early 80’s, Peter thought that a New Zealand made range of commercial products, made with safer ingredients and outstanding performance, were as good, if not better, than other local and imported multi-national products – and he was right. A self-taught chemist, Peter worked hard from basic premises, with just a concrete mixer and a half-built shed in South Auckland –singlehandedly formulating, testing, manufacturing, packaging and dispatching to the market. As demand for product increased, his adopted sons stepped in, and helped raise Peter’s awareness to use even safer raw materials to help better protect the health of his working family, and ultimately the health of all end users. This core value automatically extended to better environmental practices and stronger responsibility:
• Raw material selection was now based on biodegradable research and properties.
• Manufacturing processes were refined to reduce waste.
• Packaging selection was based on recyclable considerations. This ethos continues today.
The late 80’s presented economic challenges, and by good fortune Peter met Terry Morris, who was at the time looking to invest in a scalable manufacturing business with export potential, and a formidable team emerged.
With the shared ethic of hard work, strong family values, and environmentally responsible manufacturing, Chemical Solutions has grown into one of New Zealand’s largest privately-owned cleaning product manufacturers, distributing nationally, exporting to the Pacific and beyond.
Kemsol Today
Kemsol products are proudly manufactured at and distributed from Chemical Solutions’ modern, purpose-designed facilities in Airport Oaks; while the South Island is now serviced from our new distribution centre in Christchurch. The inhouse laboratory continues to provide research and development on sustainable raw materials and innovative products, as well as facilitating stringent batch testing for all manufactured product.
A team of technical specialists maintain a research and development laboratory to produce safe, effective, and biodegradable formulations, that have a focus on protecting the environment. 40% of the production plant’s water requirement is served from rainwater collected on site. Where possible, raw material packaging is re-used and non-recyclable waste packaging is compacted, reducing landfill and other associated impacts. All pallets are recycled, product labels are removable to assist in recycling processes, and finished goods packaging is fully recyclable. More recently most of the Kemsol Green range has moved to 100% recycled and recyclable containers, further reducing industry waste.

Chemical Solutions was the first chemical manufacturing plant in New Zealand to achieve Test Location Certification under the HSNO Act. The current office, warehouse, and manufacturing plant have been designed to further minimise potential environmental risks.
Many Kemsol products have the Eco Choice Aotearoa ecolabel that demonstrates Chemical Solutions environmental commitment from raw materials sourcing through manufacturing and packaging, to usage and eventual disposal or recycling.
Manufacturing & Operations Teams continually upgrade processes and systems to reduce and recycle wastewater and minimise electricity usage. Larger liquid blending and powder mixing facilities were installed for greater energy efficiencies and wastewater reductions. Approximately 40% of all production water is from rainwater, collected on site.
Formulation Policy commits to developing products that work efficiently and offer minimal risks to end users, staff and the environment. Products are based on raw materials from sustainable sources, such as surfactants derived from coconut oil and corn syrup.

We do our part by recycling plastic, paper, metal and glass. Customers are also welcome to send us empty containers for recycling.
We have a rainwater catchment system used for the washing of mixing vats and to wash out containers to be re-used or recycled.
We monitor our energy use and look at opportunities to reduce it or gain maximum benefit via economies of scale in production.
Our new Kemsol Green recycled bottles help reduce waste going to landfills. We also compact waste to reduce rubbish truck trips, and consequently, vehicle traffic.

Storing cleaning chemicals correctly is a fundamental part of Health and Safety at Work. Keep cleaning chemicals in a cool, dark, and ideally, lockable location. Never store products near food items and don’t store them on a shelf that is higher than eye level. Remember that some products cannot be stored safely together. Check with your Chemical Solutions representative if you need initial advice on Kemsol.

MPI Approvals
The following are some of the MPI (previously NZFSA) Approval guidelines typical for some Kemsol products. They are an abbreviated guide only and should NOT be used to replace the authorised MPI Approval classifications.
C23 This may be used in edible areas. All edible product must be removed from the room. NO edible product is permitted in the room until all treated surfaces have been adequately protected with an approved coating.
C31 This may be used in all areas. Before use all edible product and packaging material must be removed from the room.
C32 May NOT be used in edible areas. The perfume must not be used to mask the odours of unsanitary conditions. This compound must be used in a manner that prevents the perfume invading any edible area.
C33 This is a laundry compound. If treated fabric directly or indirectly comes in contact with edible product, a thorough rinse with potable water must follow the laundering process.
C35 Window cleaner for all areas. NO edible product is permitted in the room during cleaning. Incidental contamination of food contact surfaces must be thoroughly cleansed, then rinsed with potable water.
C37 General purpose detergent which is NOT for use on food surfaces, but may be used on floors and walls.
C38 Consolidated to C31
C41 This may be used in all areas. Before use, all edible product and packaging material must be removed from the room or carefully protected.
C43 This may be used as a no-rinse sanitiser on clean hard surfaces in licensed premises which are restricted only to the processing of fish.
C51 Hand washing and sanitising compound for use in all areas. After using this compound, hands must be thoroughly rinsed with potable water. There must be NO odour left on the hands.
C52 Barrier cream, dermatological cream or hand cleaner. This compound cannot be used by persons employed in slaughter of handling of edible product at any stage during dressing or processing.
C54 Hand sanitising compound for use in all areas. This compound must be supplied from a fixed, metered dispenser located a sufficient distance from the processing line to prevent product contamination.
C56 Hand washing compound for use in all areas. After using this compound, hands must be thoroughly rinsed with potable water. There must be NO odour left on the hands.
C102 - This compound must NOT be used in any area where edible products are processed, packaged or stored. It may be used in inedible processing areas or external areas. The compound must NOT be used to mask odours of unsanitary conditions.
C101-87 - This product may be used as a no-rinse sanitiser on clean hard surfaces. Before use, all edible product and packaging material must be removed from the room or carefully protected. After use, a rinse with potable water is NOT required but food contact surfaces must be thoroughly drained / dried to minimise residues.
