Using Chemicals Responsibly with a Septic Tank System
To protect your septic tank and ensure long-term performance, keep these key tips in mind:
• Never pour concentrated chemicals directly down drains, into your septic tank, especially heavy-duty cleaners and disinfectants.
• Always dilute products according to the label instructions and only mix up what you need. Avoid excess product use.
• Don’t overload your system. Spread out cleaning tasks and laundry loads across the week, rather than doing multiple on one day.
• Avoid harsh cleaners that can harm beneficial bacteria.
• Use only the recommended amount. All cleaning products, even septic-safe ones, can impact the environment if overused.
• Maintain a healthy balance. Overuse of chemicals can kill off the micro-organisms your system depends on for waste breakdown and water purification, don’t overwhelm your system.
