THE EDIT

Timeless upholstered pieces, fine contemporary furniture and bright new fabrics catch Editor-at-Large Kate Freud’s eye this month

ENSEMBLIER

Ensemblier was founded by designer Tara Craig in 2014 to produce exceptional pieces of upholstery, from headboards and beds to sofas and chairs, with every design intended to last a lifetime – and be loved and recovered by generations to come.

Every piece is handmade in England by artisans in small workshops using only the finest sustainable, natural materials. Most of the designs stem from the brand’s extensive eighteenth-century archives and are based on classical theories, proportions and constructions to create timeless heritage products.

The brand’s bestsellers include the Casati and the Constance headboards, which are guaranteed to enhance any bedroom and are often reinvented with new fabrics. New designs are introduced each year, and the most recent launch, The Waldorf, is the result of a collaboration with interior designer Joanna Plant. In addition, Ensemblier makes bespoke items using a client’s specifications and fabric. ensemblierlondon.com

TITLEY AND MARR

Textiles company Titley and Marr has been producing beautiful fabrics and furnishings for high-end residential and commercial interiors for more than 35 years. When it was founded by Kate Marr and her husband Ken Titley in 1984 the company gained inspiration from textiles created in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when the very best fabrics were created in Europe.

Today the brand’s collections include everything from paisley and herringbone, to ticking stripes, traditional florals, tribal textiles, African embroidery and even leopard print. The fabrics are made of textured yarns, wools, velvets, linens and cotton, in a mix of natural colours and rich vibrant hues.

The brand’s ethos that good design and colouration is the key to a beautiful living environment lies at the heart of everything its does, and it manufactures its fabrics from ethically produced natural products, using UK mills whenever possible.

This season sees the launch of Titley and Marr’s beautiful African Skies collection, and later in the year, the brand will be reintroducing some old favourites in the form of a collection of nineteenth- century block prints from the archive. titleyandmarr.co.uk

JULIAN CHICHESTEER

There is a reason why Julian Chichester’s furniture can be found everywhere from Soho House to the Waldorf Astoria – as well as numerous homes across the world – which is that it works in all kinds of interior schemes, both traditional and modern.

As a child, Chichester was always surrounded by beautiful things which led to his love for antiques and fine art. When, in 1986, he left his job as a market trader in London and went travelling through Asia with the idea of importing antiques, it led to him being inspired to design for himself. Taking classical shapes from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, he would add his own unique twist, such as transforming motifs into something new and fresh, and creating the unexpected by adding contemporary finishes and detail.

The latest collection celebrates a combination of soft palettes alongside his signature style and beautifully exaggerated shapes and finishes. The stars of the show include the Flamenco dining chair, the fabulous Gin’s Drinks cabinet (above), the wavy and wild Medusa wall light in faux red gesso and the Hockney stool with tapering brass-clad legs. julianchichester.com n
