Unleashing a lifelong passion to learn, lead and serve

Promise Statement Centered in the shared love of Christ, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is the college-preparatory, preschool through grade 12 independent school that inspires and challenges students to discover, hone, and steward their one-of-a-kind gifts as they come to know themselves as distinct and unconditionally loved creations of God. CHCA’s vibrant, multi-denominational family of learners creates a sheltering—but not sheltered— environment where, supporting each other and guided by expert Christian teachers, students wrestle with increasingly complex, timeless, essential questions in order to strengthen their minds and their faith. Beginning with the end in mind, CHCA graduates young adults fully prepared to succeed in college and beyond; to engage effectively and lovingly with different cultures, viewpoints, and ideas; and to achieve significant impact and influence with discerning wisdom, courageous curiosity, and resilient Christian faith— where others pull back, they lean into life.

Mike Wallace, Chief Financial Officer, CHCA and Evan Andrews, 2013 - 2014 Board Treasurer

Tim Johnson, Board of Trustees (1991-1994) Graduates: Susan ‘96, Linnea ‘99

A message from the Board of Trustees Treasurer On behalf of the Board of Trustees Finance Committee, I am extremely pleased to report that once again our independent auditor, BKD, LLP, issued a “clean” opinion regarding CHCA’s financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014. This clean opinion signifies the auditor’s belief that our financial statements accurately represent the financial position of Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (CHCA). You will see portions of the financial statements provided and reviewed included within this annual Financial Report. You may also request to review BKD’s full audit report by contacting Mike Wallace in the business office at (513) 247-0900. As we continue each year to manage through economically challenging times, our school administrators, department heads and staff work faithfully to provide our students the best educational experiences - both within and outside of the classroom walls - while staying within our established budget. We are extremely blessed to have such a dedicated and credible financial team continuously partnering with them. Mike Wallace and his staff are to be commended once again on a job well done this past year. As you will see within this report, CHCA’s fiscal sustainability rests on full, optimal enrollment. Your Board is dedicated to not only providing a high quality robust educational experience, but one that is compelling and available to more mission-fit families in our community. We continue to partner with and support leadership in efforts for continuous improvement and growth of our school. 25 years ago, Tim Johnson and the founding families had a vision, and it truly was an amazing vision! Tim put in place a structure that is still used today. Fiscal responsibility and transparent accountability were two of the building blocks he set in place. For the past 6 years I have had the sincere pleasure of working with our CFO, Mike Wallace, and his entire team. Not only are they at the top of their game, they are guardians of the virtues and visions our founding families had planned. As we move forward with our eye on the next 25 years, we assure you that the Board remains focused on maintaining the highest level of education in a Christ-centered institution stressing academic excellence. We ask for your continued prayers over our community and as always, we welcome your input via our annual public budget meeting.

25 years ago, the founding families invested in a vision. I was the first Board Treasurer and it was critical that careful management over all the assets be a key guiding principal, knowing that the return could be far greater than any dollar amount. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy was founded on principals of sound fiscal responsibility and strong financial stewardship. Under the dedicated professional leadership of Mike Wallace and the Board of Trustees we are now more than ever maintaining the highest level of fiscal management this school has seen in its 25 years. I am grateful for how far we have come as a school and as a business organization. I look forward to the next 25 years of growth.

Message from the Board of Trustees President Building a legacy through our children I’m blessed to have the opportunity to serve as CHCA’s Board president during CHCA’s 25th anniversary year. This is a time not only to look back on our humble beginnings, but also to look at the journey ahead for the next 25 years. From 165 students, in a school built on a ‘faraway farm field’, to today’s school serving over 1,200 students, surrounded by a bustling suburban landscape that is northeast Cincinnati, we truly have come a long way. Throughout this journey, we continue to live out the same vision: unleashing each student’s God-given gifts through Christ-centered academic excellence. This is a vision that will carry us through the next 25 years as well. This is the first year that both of my children are now alumni of CHCA. My son Gregory Simpson, current Board President

Jason graduated in 2014 and is freshman at Miami University, and my daughter Bridget is a 2012 graduate, also at Miami and studying abroad this term at the “other Oxford”, Oxford University in the UK. The blessings CHCA bestowed on my children are clear. They are not simply well-prepared academically, they are also well-prepared to engage in God’s world; they are firm in their faith, and seeking to make a difference not just in their own lives, but in God’s Kingdom. This is the legacy we are building at CHCA - a legacy carried throughout the world by our children. Another thing that became clear as my kids graduated, was CHCA’s impact on my own life. The community of CHCA parents, administrators and faculty, and fellow Board members, with whom I have had the privilege of journeying through life, has had a profound impact on me. I see the commitment to Christ in so many people throughout the school. I see familiar CHCA faces involved in charitable missions throughout Cincinnati, and I am excited that the children of CHCA are forming a legacy beyond their time at school - one that is based on the life of our Lord and Savior. Let us continue to raise this school up in prayer for another 25 years and beyond. In addition, please join me in thanking the people that have helped create a legacy through our children. Hug a teacher, thank a coach, and most importantly, thank Jesus for his rich blessing on this school and our children.

Martha Lindner, ‘94 Celebration Chair (1st Celebration Event) Carl Lindner, III, Founding Board of Trustees (1988 - 1994) Board of Trustees (2002 - 2006)

Martha and I, and a small group of Christian couples came together to explore starting a ‘unique’ Christian school. The spark that God used to unanimously move the group forward to found Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy was the exciting vision of academic excellence, broad offerings in academics, biblical studies, arts, sports, etc., wrapped in an uncompromising Jesus Christ – centered environment. We want to praise God for the supernatural way He has brought together and used an extraordinary group of servant-hearted board members, administrators, teachers, and school families through the last 25 years, to exceed our human expectations for CHCA! With a world that is rapidly changing, nothing is more important than to stay the course on our foundational vision, mission, values, and constitution. Martha and I are excited to continue to invest in and help CHCA to unleash a passion in our children (and grandchildren !) ‘to learn, to lead, and to serve’!

Advancing the Mission for 25 Years The Blessing and Power of Giving The blessing of the Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy philanthropic story began 27 years ago as a small group with a big vision met, prayed and began the work of opening an academically excellent Christ-centered school. Many joined them in the effort, the Partners in Excellence Campaign was launched and $3,442,100 was raised helping to open the school 25 years ago in the fall of 1989. Parents and educators joined together giving much of their faith, time and resources in order to bless students and families for years to come! Including that first campaign, a remarkable $101,000,000 in charitable gifts has been given over the past 25 years, providing for expert Christian teachers, award winning college preparatory curriculum and top notch facilities across four campus locations. So many have come alongside these first families over the years, helping the CHCA light to grow brighter and brighter.

Debbie Brooks, Board Member and Anne Venters, CHCA Director of Advancement

CHCA thrives on active participation from all who are connected to the school. We salute all who came before us with a dream and a purpose, as well as those who will come after us with perseverance and blessings to secure a long withstanding future.

Ron and Mary Beshear

Mary Beshear, Board of Trustees 1997-2003 Ron Beshear, Board of Trustees 1988 – 1994, 2006 – 2009 Graduates: Ben ’97, Robin ‘04

Over the last 25 plus years, Mary and I have been amazed at the continuous generosity of families, businesses and our community towards CHCA. Being involved from day one to the present with fundraising it is remarkable that so many have given so much for so long. People tell me often how their giving not only benefited their family, but how it changed their heart. Mary and I certainly feel that way and we know that investing in CHCA has a high destiny payoff that is eternal for students and families and all that they touch because of who they’ve become. Giving and smiling go together when I think of a quarter century of generosity at CHCA.

Ron and Phyllis McSwain

Phyllis McSwain, Board of Trustees 1991-1996 Grandchildren currently attending: 9

25 years ago, I hesitantly agreed to serve on the first Board for this fledgling, hopeful with high aspirations, K through grade 7 school. I often describe those six years as living in the middle of one of God’s miracles. The wonderful part was knowing at the time a miracle was happening! Before the annual Board retreat, we were asked to meditate, pray, or fast for God’s will for the school. Most of us thought the final plan for the year was far too ambitious. Per the miracle - six months later we were planning again. It was as though God was pulling us along, stretching our faith as we tried to keep up with His plan for this school. Ron and I count it a pleasure to have been a small part of CHCA. We look around today with grateful hearts for the next generation who has caught the vision for this Christ-centered school of excellence. We pray you experience the deep joy of being a part of this ongoing miracle.

The Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving Event The Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving Event was held in the spring, honoring those who lead through giving at CHCA. This faithful group who has given sacrificially and faithfully to advance our school was recognized on June 12 at the home of Terry and Evan Andrews. Andrew Minnich ’14 provided the entertainment for honored guests including founding families, current parents, grandparents, faculty and administration. Wonderful insight and perspective was shared by Board President Greg Simpson, Head of School Randy Brunk and Former Board Member and First Family Parent (1989) Phyllis McSwain. Greg Simpson shared insight from Proverbs 24:3-4 – “By Wisdom a house is built; and through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Greg reminded us that the treasures of CHCA are the children, and these treasures are entrusted to the school leadership, the board, the head, and the faculty to bring out the very best in each one. Randy Brunk added that “Exciting times are ahead for our school. God will lead us through it and we must be united in what we believe can happen.” He ended with this scripture from Philippians 2:1-11...

Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and compassionate? Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phyllis McSwain joined Greg and Randy and spoke from the heart. “As I look around, as a founding member and family of this school, I want to say Thank You. I see in all of you an answer to prayer. You are the next generation stepping up with your time and your treasure, fulfilling a prayer and vision we had for what CHCA could become – a Christ-centered, academically excellent school. “ Special thanks to the Event Committee Volunteers: Terry & Evan Andrews, Lori & Bob Bedinghaus, Nancy & Randy Brunk, Jenny & Rolando Collado, Inger & John Eckert, Ginny & Doug Feeney, Audrie Ana & Brian Gardner, Kay & Jack Geiger, Wendy & Michael Kuremsky, Kim & Dan Meador, Mollie & Phil Reifenberg, Blake & David Thompson, Sylvia & Mike Wallace, and Kim & Eric Wittkugel.

Alumni Meet the Challenge Exceeding All Expectations The Alumni Council challenged fellow alumni in classes 1995 – 2009 to come together in support of the CHCA Mission. The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) average participation rate for alumni giving is 15%. Prior to this Annual Fund Campaign the highest participation rate reached was 4%. Each member of the Alumni Council began reaching out to every class to encourage their support. Alumni Parents Dave and Debbie Browne presented a challenge match to alumni, offering to make a $5,000 gift to the school if alumni participation reached 15%. CHCA alumni rose to this challenge and successfully secured 15% participation. Congratulations and thank you!

The Power of Community Blessing the CHCA Mission Parent Fund Leadership Team

157 parent volunteers represented each grade level and provided an opportunity for parents to be more informed about support for CHCA’s Annual Fund. With your help, parent fund participation moved from 44% to 56%! Thank you for your leadership and your time on behalf of the CHCA Mission.

CHCA’s ability to attract funding from foundations and other grant-making institutions is critically dependent upon the rate of participation from all our constituents. CHCA Celebration 2014 a Shining Success Raising $200,000 for the CHCA Mission “A Night to Shine” drew over 500 guests and volunteers together at Manor House in Mason to enjoy dinner along with silent and live auctions, raffles, and entertainment by CHCA’s very own Ben Lapps ’12. We continue to build tradition in the form of three other annual events that financially support Celebration: •

Daddy Daughter Dance was held at Manor House in November and once again was a very memorable evening for fathers and their daughters preschool through 5th grade. Over 320 dressed for the occasion and danced to the music provided by DJ Gabriel Collins ‘11.

• Peek-A-Boutique provides a ladies night out with the opportunity to shop some of the city’s finest boutique vendors. Hosted in early December at Neal’s Design Center, the evening saw 60 ladies enjoying fellowship while hopefully marking something off of their Christmas list! •

Mother Son Round-Up was held in April and hosted over 210 Moms and their cowboys preschool through grade 5. They enjoyed dinner, dancing and a professional photo by CHCA alumni parent Dan Ledbetter.

Fine Arts Sponsors (recognizing gifts received July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014)

At every grade level, CHCA students are encouraged to sing, play, act, dance, paint, and sculpt to their heart’s content. The wide range of choices means children get the opportunity to discover and develop their unique talents; great facilities and outstanding teachers mean they get the best conditions in which to discover, grow, be challenged, and do their best work.

The Beak Squad Robotics team was formed in the Fall of 2011. The team has since grown to 20-25 students who participate in a variety of activities around the annual Robotics challenge. This past season’s challenge required students to design and build a robot that would pick up and shoot large exercise balls over 10 feet in the air to score a goal. Students work together to define their game strategy, make design decisions, proto-type, build and assemble all parts of the robot, write programs to control the robot and even create a website to market the team. The team attends two tournaments each year, and is pleased to now be ranked amongst the top teams in the state of Ohio, even though the team is only in its third year.

Celebrating 25 years of giving with a total of $101,000,000 received towards the mission of CHCA

Advancing CHCA Every day, our teachers work with our students to help them discover, hone, and steward their one-of-a-kind gifts. It’s not an easy task— meeting the challenge of a rigorous academic program, considering deep spiritual questions and uncovering your calling isn’t something that happens after completing a few worksheets and making some flash cards—and they can’t do it alone. That’s where your support comes in. Since CHCA’s earliest days, our students and teachers have greatly benefitted from the help of an engaged and generous community that has helped our school flourish by connecting thoughtfully with the school, maintaining an active volunteer network and providing strong financial support to CHCA. By being engaged, active, and generous, this community ensures that our teachers and students have the support they need to live out the mission and make a difference both today and tomorrow. Please prayerfully consider your family’s participation to further the mission of CHCA. Visit chca-oh.org/SupportCHCA

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
