dance academy tailored specifically for our CHCA students. We offer a options. Our professional faculty features instructors who have

danced and choreographed professionally throughout the United States and carry with them national and regional awards for choreography and performance.

Our program also offers an ALL INCLUSIVE tuition system, meaning

you are charged a flat fee for classes, costuming, competitions, etc. This makes the financial commitment easy to budget. Traditional

studios generally charge tuition and then charge for all of the ‘extras’ throughout the year. The only expenses not covered in CHCA’s

program will be personal items (e.g., shoes, tights, hairpins, and

makeup), travel expenses, and competition entry fees and costumes

Director Melissa Kidd at Melissa.Kidd@chca-oh.org. Please remember unless you were a member of a competitive team during the

2018-2019 school year. Contact Mrs. Kidd if you have questions regarding evaluations or 2019-2020 placement.

CLASS CATEGORIES PRESCHOOL EAGLETS

(3-4 YEAR OLDS)

Nurture your child’s creative spirit in this fun introduction to dance. This class will use upbeat music and games to build an appreciation

for music and the fundamental gross motor skills needed for dance.

Students will sharpen social awareness, coordination, and musicality while learning introductory ballet steps. They will also be exposed to the proper mechanics of forward and backward rolling and other

beginning tumbling skills, a stepping stone for acro dance they may enjoy in coming years. At the teacher’s discretion, beginning tap

exercises may also be added into the curriculum, in which case tap

shoes would be required. The Eaglet class will perform in the spring Showcase. There is a $30 program fee added to cover a costume.

TECHNIQUE CLASSES

Technique classes are non-

competitive classes which focus on flexibility, body alignment, and learning the correct execution of dance steps. Core strength will be emphasized along with learning new combinations, leaps, and turns. Students will

progress at individual rates, so these classes are ideal for the beginning student as well as those desiring a more serious focus. The technique classes will have the opportunity to perform in our spring Showcase.

There is a $30 program fee added to cover a costume, with the exception of the Jazz and Acro classes, which do not perform in the Showcase.

BALLET/TAP/JAZZ

LEVEL 1 COMBO CLASS

This is the beginning combination class for the young dancer. During this stage of dance development, introductory technique is the primary focus in ballet, which is learned through a series of

repetitive movements that build upon each other. Students will learn the five positions of feet and arms, and participate in basic barre

exercises such as plies, tendus, and ronde de jambe. They will also be introduced to basic jazz steps, which lays the groundwork for

technique in upbeat dancing. Basic beginner tap terminology and rhythms will be taught as well as an introduction to acro.

BALLET TECHNIQUE

BALLET LEVEL 2, 3 & POINTE/PRE-POINTE High quality ballet training is a must

for any serious dancer. This beautiful art form is the foundation for all forms of dance, as it develops necessary core strength and

muscle awareness. More serious instruction with heavy emphasis on technique begins around the age of eight. Typically students

begin at the barre, then move to centre floor exercises where they learn classical steps and movements, and then across-the-floor combinations. An age-appropriate ballet class is required for

participation on a competitive team. Pointe/Pre-Pointe is a ballet

class specifically devoted to dancers preparing to go on pointe or who have already begun pointe work. TWO ballet classes a week are required to participate in the Pointe/Pre-Pointe class.

STRETCH & STRENGTH CONDITIONING LEVEL 2 & 3 Dance performance is rigorous, so it is imperative that

dancers continuously build strength and flexibility to support their performance demands. It is optimal to offer conditioning separate

from technique to allow dancers/athletes to strengthen their bodies for greater technique and injury prevention. This class will include

2.

CLASS CATEGORIES cardiovascular, flexibility, and strength exercises, as well as arm, back, and legwork. Non-dancer female athletes are also welcome to take this class.

CONTEMPORARY/LYRICAL/MODERN LEVEL 2 & 3 Classes will combine the elements of several dance genres including jazz and ballet. A wide range of movements will be explored from fluid to staccato. These forms of dance tend to be more expressive and have an emotional connection to the music.

JAZZ TECHNIQUE

LEVEL 2 & 3 These classes will

teach the foundation of jazz dance including leaps and turns. In level 2, intermediate dancers will perfect basic skills and begin to work on more body awareness, balance, placement, and control. Level 3 is reserved for the advanced dancer where more intricate combinations and advanced variations of leaps and turns will be taught.

ACRO

LEVEL 2 & 3 Our Acrobatic Arts-certified classes teach

dancers basic to advanced tumbling skills to incorporate into their dance routines. Acro improves flexibility, balance, and strength. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency for each acrobatic exercise before attempting one of a higher level. Acrobatic Arts is a professional curriculum which teaches safety and correct execution of acro dance. As a guideline, level 2 dancers should be able to execute a cartwheel, handstand, and bridge without a spot. Level 3 dancers should be able to execute a back walkover and front walkover without a spot.

TAP

LEVEL 2 & 3

C ONT INU E D

Knowing how to tap is a fun and valuable skill

when it comes to performance! Beginning tap will start by teaching the

basic shuffle and flap. As the students progress through a series of leveled steps, they will continue to learn steps like the buffalo, back essence,

Maxie Ford and turning Maxie Ford, and much, much more. The level 2 class builds on Tap I or is a good starting spot for students with some tap

background. Drawbacks, pirouettes, wings, toe stands, and single-triple timestep will be some of the skills learned, and class will progress as students are ready.

MUSICAL THEATRE

LEVEL 3

Students will dance their way

through musical theatre history by learning the various styles and

techniques that developed over the decades. They will also learn how to

handle a Musical Theatre dance audition. Emphasis will be placed on style and performance of the choreography.

COMPETITION TEAMS

Lots of team camaraderie and fun

is had on our competitive teams! Requirements for competitive team

participation are: one ballet class, one jazz technique class, the competition team rehearsal, and summer choreography classes. Teams are offered in the genres of Jazz, Contemporary/Lyrical, Pom, and Hip-Hop depending

on the age group. Teams compete in 1-3 competitions per year, perform at 2-3 CHCA basketball games, ArtBeat, and the

spring Showcase. Extra “outreach performances

will also be offered.

PRIVATE LESSONS

Private lessons are

offered to students interested in receiving more focused and individualized training. They are very useful for improving technique or specific dance skills, or for working on a choreographed number for competition or the end of the year Showcase. Solo, duet, and trio prices are consistent for all private lessons.
