THE OFFICIAL CDS DICTIONARY
ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE LATEST WORDS ARE ANSWERED
By Ben Chu and Michael Sebastian (with help from the CDS community)
When one walks around the halls of Chatham Day School, they might hear words such as, "rizz," or "cap " So, today we will be addressing what these words mean based on our personal experiences and on a survey completed by most of the Upper School. We also interviewed fellow students to hear their opinions on what these words mean. Read the list below for the dictionary
Cap: Cap actually started in the 1990's, meaning exaggeration, or bragging. However, in 2018, "no cap" was used in a rap song by Lil Baby, and has since started being used as a popular reference by modern-day children Nowadays, it essentially means "to lie " So one might say, "That's cap," meaning, "that's a lie." “No-cap” means not a lie, so for example, "I saw a great white shark, nocap."
Rizz: It started being used during the middle of 2021, and it's short for "charisma " To our knowledge collected by interviewing people, it basically means the level of ability to attract people. For example, "That guy has so much rizz!" That would mean that people think he can attract people and make them like him in a romantic way
Dawg: Means "bro," or "dude," or "homie," and if you don't know what that means, it pretty much just means friend, or someone you commonly hang out with. Homie, and bro are commonly used in rap songs, while dude has pretty much been around forever To our knowledge, dawg, or "dog" is used to address a close friend.
Chad: Means alpha male. Successful, attractive, and strong, essentially the most optimal male. Facts: Means exactly what it is Facts means the truth, the opposite of cap It is used now to agree with someone. For example, one person may say, "Bro, honestly the soccer team only lost because of the ball inflation." And if someone else agrees with this, they would say, "Facts!"
Salty: Means jealous and angry It's commonly referred to as the way someone acts if they've just lost a competition and are complaining.
Disclaimer: Although this next phrase is "dead," meaning people don't use it anymore. L ratio used to be very popular during COVID-19. It combines L, or Loser, with ratio, in this case comparing something bad to something good, so L ratio means that you are a loser, and that the person saying it is the winner.

Sigma: Oddly, sigma has some Greek roots and chemical and mathematical meaning, but obviously, people don't use it normally in those terms. This term is similar to a Chad and is an alpha male.
Sus: started being used in 2020, because of the explosion of a popular new game during the time, Among Us. Although Among Us has died, sus still remains today, meaning suspicious.
Flex: Flex is when you show off. For example, men flex their muscles to rizz up a girl.
Swag: is when you have a confident and good looking style

All the World’s a Stage, but &Juliet is the Lead Role
CDS Upper Schoolers took a trip to see the show, and it blew away my expectations

9 Tony Nominations!
A few weeks ago, 7th and 8th graders, plus 6th graders who took the second trimester Shakespeare Elective, took a trip into New York see the new Broadway show &Juliet. The show focuses on the story of Juliet having to move on from Romeo and realize there is more to life than him. She then travels to Paris with her three friends, Anne, May and Angelique, who fans of the Shakespeare play will know as the nurse The show does a good job giving the message that women don't need to be controlled by men and that they can make their own decisions. May, one of Juliet’s friends, is struggling with their gender identity and they are also trying to figure out what they want. They made the right decision to cast a trans actor in this role because they did an incredible job conveying the fact that they are struggling to find their gender identity. There is also a character named Francois who is struggling to find out whether to marry Juliet or try to marry his true love, May Lance, Francois’ father, accepts that his son wants to marry May and allows him to do so.
The show and music are both really good. I loved how they found a way to incorporate each song in a way that it fits in with the show. This show is what is regarded as a Jukebox Musical which is a musical that incorporates well known pre-existing songs into a new show Other examples of this style of musical that you might know are Mamma Mia and Moulin Rouge. I admire the way that the songs weren’t just there to add familiarity and were there to help the plot move along
&Juliet held its ground against the other shows I have seen, although it is hard to beat Hamilton and Phantom of the Opera. The show surprised me in a good way. I thought about how I expected it to be somewhat like a Katy Perry concert instead of a Broadway musical. I expected it to be somewhat like Bubblegum Pop and to be too upbeat and cheery for my liking, but it was not. While the show had its fair share of upbeat and loud, colorful moments, it also had parts that were more serious or intense
One thing that I was not particularly fond of was the inclusion of “It’s My Life” by rock star Bon Jovi. It seemed out of place given that most of the soundtrack included pop stars and boy bands I felt like the energy was high enough to end the first act but it was the only real rock song in the whole show.

One thing that I absolutely LOVED was the part where May, Shakespeare, Lance, and Francois sing “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys in the middle of the second act. This was incredible and the energy and lighting were great. The set was incredible and it genuinely felt like I was at a Backstreet Boys concert. I also loved the crossover from one of Shakespeare's real shows, As You Like It. The family band was called De Bois Band and in Shakespeare's real play, there is a character named Sir Rowland de Bois who is the father of three kids, like Lance in & Juliet I counted how many times confetti was used, and I’m pretty sure it was four times. They also did a good job turning the ending into a moment in which the audience could participate in.
Overall, I think that the show was good It was not the best show I have ever seen, but it was better than I originally thought that it was going to be. I also want to touch on what an amazing opportunity it was to come along on this trip to see this show I think that it was a well written and professionally performed show The actors did incredible work and the ensemble had impressive dance moves. I can’t wait to see more musicals of this type come to Broadway with different genres of music and different stories. I give this show 3 5 stars!

8TH
GRADE HEADS TO WASHINGTON, DC SPECIAL REPORT
by Grace Onyemakanor
It’s been less than two weeks since the 8th graders embarked on a journey to Washington D C, where they had the chance to explore a variety of historical sites, including the White House, the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and many others. The trip to D.C was a fantastic opportunity for the 8th graders to learn more about American history while also spending quality time with each other By visiting these significant sites, the students were able to get a better sense of the country’s past, which all believe will be invaluable to them in the future.
GO: What was the biggest challenge you faced while planning this trip?
Mr. Gordon: The most significant obstacle I encountered when organizing this trip was securing dates that were convenient for everyone and arranging transportation, which takes longer than most people realize since there are numerous communications involved
Additionally, it was crucial to keep the parents informed about what was expected and how things would operate
GO: What do you think the greatest purpose of the trip is?
Mr. Gordon: I believe the primary objective of this trip is to establish memories that will last a lifetime for the kids Every adult I’ve met recalls their 8th grade trip and the activities they engaged in, the friendships they formed, and the discussions they had. It’s a significant event in an individual’s life, and that is my aim.
Students visited the Native American History Museum and Botanical Garden on day one On day two, they visited the African American History Museum, Hop On Hop Off Bus tour of the city and enjoyed seeing the monuments.

TAYT’S TOP 25 MLB CURRENT PLAYERS (#14-9)
THE 2023 MLB SEASON HAS BEGUN AND HERE ARE SOME EARLY THOUGHTS
by Tayt Kent
Continued from last week:
14 Sandy Alcantara/espn rank 11
Sandy Alcantara is a pitcher for the Miami Marlins. In the early 20th century there was a pitcher named Iron Man Mcginnity. Sandy is basically a clone of him so we might as well call him Iron Man Alcantara. He led the major league with the most innings pitched by far He won the National League Cy Young Award, putting him higher up on this list.
13. Vladimir Guerrero Jr/ espn rank 16
Vladimir Guerrero Jr is a first baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays He is a big guy that has tons of power and is pretty good on the defensive side of things. He is one of the hardest players to assess. He was an absolute basher back in 2021 hitting some of the farthest and most numerous home runs and finishing second in MVP voting. He is the 29th best player hitting wise and as far as first basemen go, he is definitely in the top 3 or 2 on the hitting side.
12 Ronald Acuna Jr/ espn rank 14
Ronald Acuna Jr is an outfielder, mainly playing in the right and center field, for the Atlanta Braves. He was only 19 years old during his 2019 rookie season when he earned a 280 batting average with 41 home runs, 37 stolen bases, and 127 runs When Acuna tore his ACL on July 10, 2021, he ranked fourth in the league in home runs and 5th in steals. When he returned last season, he just wasn't the same player in every aspect. He had trouble elevating the ball and had way less power. He gets to play alongside Austin Riley, Marcell Ozuna, Matt Olson, Michael Harris Jr, and Ozzie Albies

Continued from previous page:
11. Nolan Arenado/ espn rank 10
Nolan Arenado is a 3rd baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals. Pitchers fear Arenado when he steps up to the plate as he does not strike out very often He has hit at least 30 or more home runs in each season for the last seven seasons He is definitely the best 3rd baseman in the league alongside Manny Machado. If we were comparing him to Manny Machado, it would be very hard to say who's better because Machado would probably be the better hitter but Arenado would be the better fielder and Machado has been playing for longer. Either way, Arenado is one of the best.
10. Yordan Alvarez/ espn rank 15
Yordan Alvarez is an outfielder/designated hitter for the Houston Astros Yordan has two World Series rings. He had a tough first half of the season last year, but after the all star week he did amazing work and had a shot at the AL MVP spot. He fell short, but did amazing work on the field and won the World Series He is definitely one of the most powerful leftys in the league and pitchers fear this guy when he steps up to the plate. He is not the best defensive player, which makes him more powerful as a designated hitter. He is definitely not getting paid for his defensive skills! It is also important to remember that he won rookie of the year back when he was a rookie.
9. Paul Goldschmidt/ espn rank 12
Paul Goldschmidt is a first baseman for the St Louis Cardinals Paul Goldschmidt is a former NL MVP after having an amazing year offensively and defensively. He is 34 years old. It's going to be hard for Paul to follow up after last year and do just as well, but I expect big things from him He blew away the competition and I bet everyone can agree with me on that point. He landed top three in the NL in a number of categories. While some might say he can’t keep it up, don’t expect for him to collapse this year.
In the next edition of the Hawk Weekly, Tayt will continue his report!

NHL Playoff Prediction Pt 2
Some of the biggest NHL teams were upset in the first round so we are offering up new playoff predictions
by Trevor Meeker and Tayt Kent
In the first round of the NHL playoffs, the Boston Bruins were eliminated The Bruins lost in an overtime game 7. The 1-seed Bruins lost to the 8-seed Florida Panthers. The Bruins had a 31 lead in the series and slowly lost control. In game 7, the Bruins lost their lead with one minute remaining on the clock. The Panthers scored with less than 15 seconds left, sending the game to overtime. That was where the Bruins would come short and the Panthers would end the 1-seed Bruins season. This is not new for the Bruins as they have been upset in the playoffs before.
Another series that has been extremely fun to watch is the Rangers vs the Devils. This series went to game 7 and in game 7, the Devils played with a fast tempo and left the Rangers in the dust. The final score was 4-0. Now the Devils will play the 1-seed Carolina Hurricanes
And now for our new playoff predictions with some big teams out now We still think that the Oilers will go a long way. A team that could stop the Oilers are the Kraken. They defeated the Stanley Cup champions. And in the east, we think that the Devils are going all the way. Either way, it is a fun series to watch!

Dear Henry the Hawk, I’m in love with my boyfriend's bestie what do I do?
Anonymous
Dear Anonymous,
That’s a lot to unpack, but the simplest response I can give you is to just be honest about your feelings. It’s better to get it off your chest now rather than keep your feelings to yourself and be uncomfortable in your relationship. It’s not fair to you or to your boyfriend I’m sure that you're also conflicted about who you care for more, your boyfriend or his best friend? Once you completely understand your feelings and why you have them, I’d say a conversation with your boyfriend and his friend is in order. Best of luck!

Hot New CDS Classes 2023!
New Fine Arts Electives Are Up and Running!
by Liam Noon
During the third trimester, CDS introduced two new classes! Many students were excited about these new classes causing them to sign up. One of the classes that got students really excited was Film Analysis. Most students said they signed up because they loved the idea of watching movies but found out that it isn't all the class is about
“In Film Analysis, we watch and analyze specific movies and discuss what makes them interesting and how they relate to real life,” says Film Analysis teacher Mr.Bromstedt. “There are a lot of fun movies to see these days but they're not always thought-provoking,” he added
His goal is to show and analyze movies to make students think a little differently about what they are watching.
“We are currently watching a movie called Interstellar. This film is set in the future where the earth is failing, almost causing all of humanity to go extinct. To save humanity, NASA engineers travel through space to find a habitable planet similar to Earth using interstellar travel to stop humanity from going extinct,” says student Sekario Crossman.
Many students enjoy this class and believe it is enjoyable while allowing students to take a break to relax and watch movies. Student Oliver Olefson says, “I enjoy Film Analysis because it allows me to watch movies with friends. It is difficult to watch movies with them outside of school due to everybody living in different areas Now I can watch with them and hear what they have to say,” he says.

The second class that was recently added is Journalism. There are 12 students enrolled in the course. The reason Journalism was high on many students' lists is that it is a new elective and it gives students an opportunity to strengthen their writing abilities. For those students who weren't as happy when they received Journalism as their elective, many have learned to like it and are beginning to look forward to it.
“At first I wasn't too happy that I ended up with Journalism but then I started to enjoy it more and more. It also gives me an opportunity to become a better writer and improve my writing skills!” says an anonymous student. Student Andrew Cullen said he enjoys Journalism, “because I get to look at current events and write about them.”
“Currently we are learning about different parts of the newspaper and writing for our new newspaper, Hawk Weekly In the Hawk Weekly, different students write about current events happening both inside and outside of school, as well as design cartoons, conduct interviews, give advice, and review foods and entertainment,” says Liam Noon, the newest student to enroll in Journalism
If new courses are added to the 2023-2024 program, the Hawk Weekly will report on it.

PUZZLES--SOLUTIONS
by Maxwell Lin
Answer 1: Yes. If the knight moves and then returns to its original position in the first two moves it makes, this positioning for the black pawn is possible.
Answer 2: You say “You will free my brother.” If the statement is false, he would have to free your brother, but if it is false, it also means that he won’t free your brother. This is a contradiction, so the answer to this statement can’t be false. And if “You will free my brother” is true, he will have to free you because it was a true statement. And if it is true, he will also free your brother.
