Dear Reader,

I am excited that the third issue of our magazine, Mirandus, has landed in your hands. This year has been an interesting one, to say the least. Few of us would have expected to be grounded through much of 2020 and many of us miss our families and friends overseas. However, this ordeal has truly shown us that the world is a much smaller place than we knew, and a place we perhaps had taken for granted for a little too long.

This year has been a year of reflection, connection, and giving back for my team at Charlotte Travel. We realized early on that this would be a long rollercoaster ride and that we would have to do everything in our power to make sure our clients were looked after whilst navigating the ‘new norm’ in travel. Throughout the pandemic, we always stayed open and in touch with our clients while we worked in the office or at home to ensure safety and although Charlotte Travel celebrated its 19th birthday ‘at home’, we look forward to celebrating our 20th with a huge celebration.

Giving back to our community has always been an important part of our business and this year we worked together with ImpactHK to sell travel vouchers, 20% of the proceeds of which were donated to the charity. We also took the team on a Kindness Walk and donated essential items to the homeless in Hong Kong.

We have also launched the brand new look and feel for Charlotte Travel, giving our logos, colours, and branding a facelift. However, as I continue the legacy of my mother as CEO, I make a commitment to you, our clients, that the DNA of Charlotte Travel has not changed but has instead become more personal, more unique and more intimate. We are The Luxury You

With our new branding, our new enhanced DNA, and having survived a global pandemic, I am proud to say we have come out of 2020 stronger than ever. 我很高興看到我們的雜誌“奇程”，第三期出版了。今年或 許從某些角度看，是有趣的一年。誰會料到 2020 年的聖誕 節，世紀病毒仍然迅速蔓延，以使旅遊行業在這年的大部份 時間，都停下來嗎？這年，我們當中很少有人會想到，跟海 外的親朋好友們，只能想念卻不能聚首。然而，這場磨練已 經顯示，現今的世界已經比我們所認知的小了，或許我們都 自以為是得太久，卻沒留意世界的改變。

這一年是樂悠遊團隊的反思，聯繫和回饋的一年。我們很早 就意識到這將是一次漫長的過山車旅程，團隊已經竭盡所長 為旅遊“新規範”進程中，使客戶們都得到最妥貼的服務。我 們全心全意服務客戶，因此，疫情期間，不論辦公室或家居工 作，我們都盡力確保同事和客戶的安全；儘管樂悠遊旅行社 （Charlotte Travel）去年不能跟大家一起慶祝公司成立 19 週年，我們期望 2021 年能夠舉行樂悠遊 20 週年的盛大慶典。

Charlotte Travel owner Roger Harris has been travelling for 45 years, including overland through Africa and Asia, and stints living in South Africa, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and now Hong Kong. His more adventurous exploits include Himalayan trekking and canoeing through Papua New Guinea, whilst work assignments have sent him to 15 countries across Asia.

the world’s Grand Dame hotels, has emerged from an extensive revitalisation more elegant than ever.

Following over 130 years of unsurpassed service excellence, Raffles Singapore has undergone a careful and sensitive restoration and has emerged as the new benchmark for luxury in the Lion City. The project included an expansion of its luxurious all-suite accommodation to 115, with the introduction of exquisite new suite categories, a revival of perennial favorites such as the legendary Singapore Sling at the Long Bar, the renowned Afternoon Tea at the Grand Lobby, the Raffles Boutique featuring exclusive Raffles merchandise, and the enlistment of globally celebrated celebrity chefs to head some of its new restaurants.

The grand hotel’s new Studio and Residence Suites feature its signature lofty colonial architecture, a charming verandah, and polished teakwood floors. Old-world accents such as original four-meter high ceilings harmonise perfectly with the Residence suites’ newly-added parlour, pantry, dining area and powder room. These changes were choreographed by Alexandra Champalimaud, the renowned design agency that has worked on some of the world’s great luxury hotels, including The Dorchester in London, Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles and The Waldorf Astoria New York.

The Raffles dining experience has also been elevated with ten new restaurants set to open, including two new concepts helmed by Michelin-starred Alain Ducasse and Anne-Sophie Pic. Chef Ducasse – with 20 restaurants already under his belt – has launched restaurant BBR by Alain Ducasse, situated within the hotel’s 122-year-old Bar & Billiard Room, serving Latin-Mediterranean cuisine with Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and French influences. Three Michelin-starred Chef AnneSophie Pic is the visionary behind La Dame de Pic, serving delectable French cuisine with an emphasis on aromatic complexity, flavour combinations and powerful, emotive tastes. Another notable opening is that of Jereme Leung, one of the most influential chefs in the modern Chinese culinary movement. His restaurant 藝 (yì) by Jereme Leung, which stands for ‘Art’, is located within the refreshed Raffles Arcade, and focuses on centuries of culinary mastery and the intricacies of Chinese cuisine, from Cantonese classics to adaptions of China’s ancient delicacies.

You’ll have ample opportunity to soak in the history and intrigue of Petra during a guided horseback ride, complete with a Bedouin guide, that will visit ancient tombs, narrow passageways in the living sandstone formations called siq, and give context to the city’s demise. Your Jordanian adventure concludes at the Dead Sea, a famed salt lake located at the heart of the Jordan Rift Valley. At over 430 metres below sea level, this is the lowest place on land on the planet. It’s also one of its saltiest, with 9.6 times the salinity of the ocean meaning swimmers will have no problem staying afloat. You might not know that the Dead Sea is one of the world’s first wellness destinations; pilgrims have travelled to its salt-encrusted coast for thousands of years, believing its water is a cure for a host of ailments.

Our existing logo has represented a longstanding, reputable company that is home to happy staff servicing our happy customers for 19 years. The logo was developed for its resemblance of my smiling face as a happy child, and to convey the feeling my mother felt raising me whilst travelling, a feeling she hoped she could share with her clients. Now, both Charlotte and Charlotte Travel have grown and matured, each with interesting characters and strengths, and are ready to face a new generation of travellers with sophisticated expectations. I believe the time is apt for adopting a new logo which can inject more personality and emotional resonance into our brand identity.

Rosewood Brings Style & Luxury to Yangon

Housed within one of the city’s grandest colonial-era buildings, Rosewood Yangon brings new levels of luxury and sophistication to Myanmar’s former capital. Tell us about your last trip? What were the lasting memories?

Our last short getaway was to Thailand. My father is Thai so I have been going to The Land of Smiles on a regular basis since I was a baby and to this day it remains one of my favourite destinations. There is so much to love about the country – the food, the culture, the scenery, the people. My son Kyle’s first trip at five months was to Thailand and I have made it a point to bring him to see my Lamsam relatives at least once a year. Phuket was the perfect relaxing getaway – a few days of sun and sea in a magnificent hotel with excellent service. We hired a yacht to take us out on the water for the day and it was wonderful to be able to kayak around Phang Nga Bay and explore its many caves and islets. Bangkok was mainly family time, with a bit of shopping and sight-seeing thrown in.

You’re actively involved with many leading Hong Kong charities, including Mother’s Choice, Chicken Soup Foundation, and Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation’s Women of Hope Campaign; does this sense of giving back factor into your travel choices?

Wherever we go in the world, we actively seek out opportunities to visit some grassroot organisations and find ways to contribute directly to the locals – everything from visiting small tea plantations in Sri Lanka to touring

family-owned cocoa farms in Ecuador, to kayak excursions around the Phuket islands with local fishermen. When we were in Bhutan, we lived with a local family in Thimphu on their farm for a few days which was an incredible, eye-opening experience.

As a mother, what do you look to gain from travel, both for yourself and your son? Are there special themes you like to follow when exploring new destinations?

We are quite an adventurous family and Kyle is already quite a welltravelled 3 ½ year old – our recent visit to Bangkok was his 18th trip. I

believe that travel is one of the best forms of education for any one at any age. While some of our holidays are to more “conventional” destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, and Australia, as a family we have also ventured to more exotic locations, including the Galapagos Islands. I don’t think there are too many three-year-olds who can tell you about red and blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, frigate birds and sally lightfoot crabs!

Australia holds a very special place in my heart. On and off, I spent more than a decade there during my formative years for swimming and university, and I consider it my second home. There is such great diversity, from the stunning Blue Mountains in New South Wales, and the lush rainforests of the Daintree in North Queensland, to the Kimberley in Western Australia, and the fiery red earth of the Outback - the list goes on! Each city or state has so much to offer. However, the ravaging bushfires that lay waste to this beautiful country and its people and animals are absolutely heart-breaking.

What’s the most fascinating or romantic destination you’ve visited with your husband?

Bhutan is an extraordinarily special

destination. We went there in 2015 for Marc’s 40th birthday and spent more than two weeks travelling all around the country. We even ventured to the far less visited north-eastern districts of Lhuntse and Mongar. We went on two amazing treks into the mountains, visited countless temples and holy places and explored numerous pristine valleys. Incredible India certainly lives up to its country’s tagline and we enjoyed the serenity of Amanbagh before venturing to Aman-I-Khas in Ranthambore to search for tigers and visiting Agra to see the stunning Taj Mahal. One of the most amazing properties we’ve been to is Amangiri [in Utah]; we went there in 2015 as newly-weds when it was still very new. The hotel is set well inside a national park and it was incredible to be able to wake up surrounded by the canyons every day.

What are the major differences between when you travel as a

multi-generational family and when you travel just with your husband?

I wouldn’t say there are any major differences between travelling as a multi-generational family and as a couple but when we travel with Kyle and my mum, convenience, efficiency and comfort are particularly high priorities – from plane-tohotel, door to door service and fast track guides through immigration and baggage claim, to finding the most suitable travel destinations, hotels and activities based on our guidelines or schedules in planning that particular holiday. For example, we recently had a window of three nights for a quick getaway from Hong Kong: Charlotte recommended we go to Trisara in Phuket and it was absolutely perfect – a gorgeous hotel with fantastic all-inclusive service, only a 15-minute car ride from the airport, which was crucial for such a short holiday, and direct flights with a suitable flight schedule for Kyle. When travelling as a family I appreciate meticulous planning and prefer to take away the “surprise factor” so to speak.

When travelling with Kyle, how do you include “a touch of glam”?

Wherever we take family holidays, Marc and I always head off on our

own for “date nights” or “date days”. Quite often we will visit a beautiful spa followed by dinner at a nice restaurant. Sometimes Marc and I will jet off for a few days on our own - whilst in Sydney last year, Marc and I went off on our own to the One&Only Wolgan Valley. We are so very fortunate to have my mum with us to look after Kyle and to give us that extra flexibility.

As a former Olympic swimmer, do you naturally gravitate towards the water when travelling?

身為前奧運女飛魚，你旅行時會否較注 意水上活動？

Beach holidays are always a favourite or even finding accommodations that are close to or overlooking the water. I have always loved the water and also enjoy scuba diving. Last summer we even donned dry suits and went for a swim in the glacial waters around Sitka, Alaska. Many years ago, I remember spontaneously diving into a glacial lake whilst trekking Milford Sound in New Zealand. Marc is happiest when he’s lying on a sunbed by the pool or on the beach and we thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to the Maldives a couple of years ago and would very much like to return either as a couple or even with the family.

Does travel inspire you in your role as a life coach, or does that role inspire you to travel?

旅遊如何影響你成為人生教練，或人生 教練又如何啟發旅程？

The role of being a life coach and motivational speaker is to impart and apply my personal life experiences. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to travel extensively throughout my life and in doing so, have gained great experience, insight and many other important life skills. Travel opens one’s eyes to what’s really going on in the world around us. It allows us an opportunity to depart from our comfortable, familiar bubble-like existence and truly appreciate our many blessings.

我好慶幸有這麼多機會遨遊列國，從 而增加閱歷、洞察力和不少重要的 生活技能，再利用此經驗成為人生教 練和勵志演說家。旅遊確使人眼界大 開，當有機會離開安全網和熟悉的環 境，投入另一國度去留意發生何事， 更令我感恩自己身處的環境。

Do you have a favourite travel moment you can share with us? 可否分享一下你在旅遊時遇上最喜歡事 情？

When Marc and I were in Bhutan we would keep food scraps from our meals to feed the many stray dogs. We started on Day 1 in Thimphu and

continued this practice all the way through Paro, Punakha, Bumthang, Lhuentse and Mongar. When driving across the mountains from Bumthang to Lhuentse we came across this incredibly skinny dog who popped out of nowhere. Marc is a diehard dog lover (whilst in Phuket recently he spent a whole day volunteering at Soi Dog Rescue) so we stopped the car and got out to see if the dog would come to us. He was very friendly, and we ended up hand-feeding our Amankora picnic lunchboxes to him.

I realise we already travel incessantly but every five years I organise an extra special adventure for Marc’s “significant” birthdays. Our next adventure is going to be a very exciting one – we will be heading to South Africa as part of his 45th birthday celebrations. Charlotte and Ewan have put together an incredible itinerary encompassing a safari in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve; cage diving with great white sharks at the Dolphin Coast, and exploration of Cape Town and its surrounding areas. I simply can’t wait!

For most residents of Asia, South America is another world – half a world away. Our Founder’s Journey in November and December 2019 took Jackie and Roger on the Regent Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship from Lima, Peru to Buenos Aires, Argentina, via Tierra Del Fuego and the Falkland Islands.

Our cruise included an extensive selection of shore excursions, as well as some premium trips for which extra payment was required, including a flight over the famed and enigmatic Nazca Lines in Peru. Our excursion to Peru’s Reserva Nacional de Paracas to see the dramatic coastal cliff desert scenery served as an introduction to the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. 郵輪旅程雖已包括一系列不同類型岸上遊活動，仍可自費參加獨特體驗， 如乘小型飛機觀看秘魯著名的納斯卡線。我倆在秘魯的岸上遊是往帕拉 卡斯國家保護區，看壯觀的沿海懸崖沙漠風光，為日後前往智利北部阿 塔卡馬沙漠添注腳。

Sailing southward, we began to appreciate the unusual geography of Chile, which stretches over 4,300 km north to south, but only 350 km at its widest point east to west. Chile’s range of climates and geographies encompasses the Atacama Desert - one of the driest places in the world - a Mediterranean climate in the country’s centre, and an oceanic climate with alpine tundra and glaciers in the south.

The fertile oasis of Azapa Valley featured prehistoric petroglyphs (images on the ground created by removing part of a rock surface) and geoglyphs (images on the ground formed by the application of rocks, gravel, or earth), while the nearby museum contained what were claimed as the oldest mummies in the world. From the port of Coquimbo, Chile, our excursion took us to the Elqui Valley to savour the local wine and Pisco, a type of brandy produced in the winemaking regions of Peru and Chile. The renowned Pisco Sour is a cocktail made with this clear grape spirit, as well as lemon juice, egg white, and sugar syrup.

From the port of San Antonio, we ventured to Valpariso, with its clusters of colourful homes and cobblestone alleyways ascending above a scenic harbour. Our excursion took us to the Petrohue Waterfalls at the foot of the Osorno Volcano. Next came Puerto Chacabuco in Patagonia, at the head of the Aysén fjord, into which the SS Mariner was able to navigate to afford spectacular views of the steep-sided snowcapped mountains on either side.

Continuing southward through Patagonia, along the Smyth Channel, afforded views of wind-swept mountains either side as well as the partiallysubmerged hull of the SS Santa Leonor, which ran aground in 1968.

Chile’s southern coast is a maze of fjords and channels that culminate in Cape Horn, the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and the northern boundary of the Drake Passage, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet. We then navigated through the Beagle Channel (named for the ship of Charles Darwin’s expedition) to Ushuaia in Argentina, regarded as the southernmost city in the world. There is easy access to the wildlife of nearby Tierra del Fuego

National Park, which includes penguins, seals, and orcas.

We sailed from Ushuaia towards the Falklands (Malvinas in Argentina) but were thwarted by the weather which was too rough for landing via the ship’s tenders - Port Stanley not having a suitable dock. Leaving the islands behind us, we then headed back north towards the warmer climes of Montevideo, capital of Uruguay. With its numerous beaches, colonial architecture and equitable climate, the city has consistently been rated as having the highest quality of life in Latin America. Our final destination was Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of Argentina, known for its preserved eclectic European architecture.

Having travelled so far from home, we were intent on making the most of our time in South America, and we chose to travel on to Iguassu Falls, arguably one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring sights. The falls can be encountered from both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides, with the best viewing available from a stay in the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, the only hotel in Iguassu National Park. As the park closes at 6:00 pm, hotel guests have the luxury of access to the falls at sunset in near solitude – a truly magical experience.

The final leg of our South American adventure took us to Rio de Janeiro for a relaxing stay in Belmond’s super luxurious Copacabana Palace, overlooking the iconic Copacabana beach. No visit here would be complete without a trip to the city’s famous Corcovado and Sugarloaf mountains.

How did you become interested in travelling?

Geography lessons at school revealed to me that there was a huge wide world out there that seemed completely different to the one I lived in and I became intensely curious to learn more about it. I have never lost that curiosity.

What about travel trends in the year to come?

Firstly, caution. In countries that rely heavily on tourism revenues, there will be some tension between the desire to promote their destinations whilst simultaneously ensuring travellers’ safety. I can see travellers keeping a close eye on how destinations are dealing with the pandemic. Secondly, a trend that the pandemic has interrupted but seems likely to re-emerge is soft experiential adventure, in luxury. This means keeping in touch with nature and the outdoors whilst enjoying luxurious accommodation, and includes glamping, de-luxe safaris, and expedition cruises.

How did you become interested in travel?

Living in Shek Kip Mei, Hong Kong, which was close to the old airport, I saw planes flying closely overhead every day and always wanted to be on one.

What was the first trip you remember taking?

I joined a student exchange trip to Hiroshima in Japan, staying with a traditional family where nobody could speak English. It was a small village, and everyone was so warm and friendly, and I learned a lot about the local culture.

My first job as a tour escort was to accompany a group of western tourists to China; this is before it opened up to the world and there were many hardships to face. The food was not so good, and the beer was always warm as there weren’t any refrigerators.

A safari to Kenya with my family, including my then two-year old daughter. We stayed in a tented camp and at the Mt Kenya Safari Club as well as visiting a Masai family in their traditional mud hut.

Why did you start Charlotte Travel?

In 2021, travellers will look for safety with fewer people around them, so I predict destinations with secluded ocean fronts like in the Maldives and Seychelles will prove popular, as will small group safaris in Africa; and remote and isolated destinations, such as trekking in Bhutan.

There is nothing quite like an African safari, the opportunity to commune with nature, to encounter new cultures and traditions, and to set the busy modern world aside while you take some time out amidst the endless savannahs and dense jungles of Africa’s most popular destinations. However, today’s contemporary safari is a far cry from the hunting trips and game lodges that gave birth to the industry. Today’s modern safari lodges and camps have strong sustainability and conservation philosophies, are active members of their

extended communities, and focus on wellness and dining experiences almost as much as they do on wildlife encounters.

SINGITA A Place of Miracles 奇蹟再現 聖傑家

One such safari operator is Singita, a household name among fans of African travel. The company began 25 years ago when South African Luke Bailes founded an African wilderness tourism company that would combine high-end hospitality with the unforgettable experiences of southern Africa.

However, the company can trace its philosophies even further back than that, to 1925, when Luke’s grandfather bought a piece of land that would later become the acclaimed Sabi Sand Reserve. Taking the Shangaan word for ‘place of miracles’ as its name, the 18,000-hectare property evolved from a hunting concession to an exclusive conservation reserve, with Luke, now CEO, aided by environmentalist Dave Wright, opening the company’s first camp, Singita Ebony Lodge, in 1993. The camp represented a new benchmark in safari tourism, one which benefited both guest and local community. It was also an opportunity to safeguard the environment and curb the sustenance poaching that was commonplace in the early 1990s.

“It occurred to me that tourism was an effective way of stopping this practice,” said Luke in an interview with Business Day. “If communities protect animals, tourism would flourish, jobs and business linkages would be formed, and a sound interdependent relationship would result. Of course, today we do significantly more than this — we focus on education, small and medium business development and are making a profound difference in many countries.”

Under the leadership of Bailes and close friend and former CEO and Conservation Director Mark Witney (who retired in May 2019), Singita evolved with the tastes and demands of its high-end clientele, travellers who are no longer content to be passive spectators but now want to interact with the land, the wildlife, and the people that call these remarkable landscapes home. Singita now manages 15 lodges across five diverse ecosystems in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and most recently, Rwanda with the opening of Singita Volcanoes National Park, offering travellers a kaleidoscopic African experience that includes art, heritage, gastronomy and philanthropy.

Today, Singita champions ‘low volume tourism’, with a focus on its three core pillars of biodiversity, sustainability and community while offering travellers a far richer safari experience than just game drives and sundowner gin and tonics. In partnership with non-profit Funds & Trusts, which implements strategic conservation projects in each region the company operates, Singita’s 100-year goal is to preserve and protect large areas of African wilderness for future generations to come.

“Sustainability – operating in an environmentally conscious way at every level of the business – is a key component of Singita’s conservation success, alongside maintaining the integrity of its reserves and their ecosystems and working with local communities to ensure that they thrive because of the lodges,” says Bailes. “The health and survival of each of these three aspects is crucial to the survival of the whole.”

These efforts can be seen at Singita Sabora Tented Camp, nine beautifully appointed tented suites set against the dramatic savannahs of the Serengeti. Here, in addition to walking safaris and game drives, guests can visit the Singita Grumeti Fund anti-

poaching team, which is made up of 120 dedicated scouts who patrol more than 141,000 hectares of private concession, quickly identifying incursions and liaising with rangers to catch poachers before they have a chance to strike.

Offering a wide spectrum of African safari experiences at its 16 camps, lodges, and hotels in Kenya and Tanzania, Elewana, which was founded in 2004 by Karim Wissanji, marries luxury hospitality with the breathtaking landscapes of East Africa. Another company that’s helping forge the way for the safaris of the future is Asilia Africa. Founded by Dutchmen Bas Hochstenbach and Jeroen Harderwijk, the men set out to create a collection of camps (today 23 and counting) that captured both the unique wilderness experiences of their locales but also offered travellers a contemporary escape. The company, whose name translates as “authentic” in Swahili, has now been at the forefront of the safari camp scene for over a decade.

‘’When we founded Asilia 15 years ago our mission was to develop tourism as a force for good in East Africa,” says Harderwijk, co-founder and Managing Director. “We saw an opportunity to scale up the traditional safari tourism approach to make a bigger positive impact and create substantial recurrent revenue streams for the protection of Africa’s unique wilderness areas, particularly in the off the beaten track destinations that were being overlooked.”

a responsibility that extended beyond the needs of its guests. Asilia Africa now employs over 900 people and has a wide-reaching impact in conservation, sustainability and community development. It’s this mission that has driven pioneering projects such as Asilia’s role as co-founders in the community-based Mara conservancies, its investments in Lake Victoria’s Rubondo Island, and its position as the largest investor in one of Africa’s most important national parks, Ruaha, in Tanzania.

What to Expect 期望

Asilia’s contemporary face can be seen in one of the company’s newest retreats, The Highlands. This stunning camp, which opened high up on the rim of the acclaimed Ngorongoro Crater in 2016, personifies the Asilia mantra, with close community ties with nearby Masai villages, which Asilia supports through education and sanitation initiatives; an experienced team of naturalists that lead hikes and game drives to the crater floor, and a series of striking, sustainably-constructed canvas and perspex domed suites with wraparound sun decks.

“Even the Highlands, perhaps today our most iconic property, was a very conscious investment,” says Harderwijk. “We wanted to counterbalance the over-tourism occurring in some areas of Ngorongoro and stretch the benefits of tourism to remote communities who had not, to date, seen any advantages. And deep down, although fads and trends come and go, we remain rooted in delivering genuine East African hospitality that empowers the crucial wilderness areas where we operate to thrive, benefiting people and nature alike.’’

For those that haven’t been on an African safari, there are a few things to consider. 未曾到過非州野生動物保護區的旅人，可以參考下列建議。

Accommodation: Depending on where you’re travelling to and the safari company you’ve chosen, you’ll either stay in a game lodge, a tented camp, or something in the middle. Lodges like Elewana’s The Manor Ngorongoro offer the most comfort but can limit the interaction with wildlife because of their permanence. At the other end of the spectrum, mobile tented camps like Asilia Africa’s Kimondo Camp in the Serengeti offer a more authentic safari experience –think canvas floors and bucket showers – and close proximity to migratory wildlife. Many travellers will opt for something in the middle, like Singita’s Mara River Tented Camp, which has the romance of canvas with the practicality of permanent foundations and running water in the bathrooms.

Service: Safari camps are all about being flexible, so expect casual yet intuitive service levels with plenty of authentic

African hospitality. Camp staff typically speak English and will attend to any request where possible – remember, the beauty of a safari is that you’re far from civilisation.

While breakfasts tend to be early, guests can also opt to enjoy theirs in the bush during game drives. Dinners, often served alfresco, follow elegant communal sundowner cocktail sessions, usually presented around an open fire pit.

創造者楊志超又將靈感啟蒙

新生代自傲的香港人，拉瑪克里斯納訪談中如是說。

If you’re looking for G.O.D. in the new decade, you’ll find eight unmistakable, literal signs studded in and around Hong Kong. Not exactly divine sepulchers but eight stores and outlets of the lifestyle and retail brand that was launched 23 years ago by Douglas Young (with his business partner Benjamin Lau). All their signs are still handpainted or neon-lit around the city and doing perfectly well in

this bewildering age of chaos and conflict, the likes of which the city hasn’t seen in decades.

An architect by design and study, Young launched the cheeky heritage brand G.O.D. (a homophonic translation of the Cantonese jyu hou di, which roughly translates to “to live better”) with none of the seriousness one would expect from an enterprising start-up, especially

one that has managed to outlive all its critics.

Skim through news archives and you’ll find people offended by moon cakes sold by the brand with nudes carved on the buns; wordage on wardrobes that sound a lot like colloquial curses and expletives; and a t-shirt collection with triad symbols and colours that caused such a major storm back in the ‘90s Young and his staff spent a few days under police custody. He was front page in every tabloid and paper - publicity the likes of which you can’t buy these days for love nor money. But don’t be fooled; this pioneer in the industry, owner and mastermind has successfully maintained his company for over two decades with tongue-firmly-in-cheek.

When asked what he wished he knew back in October of 1996, when he first opened one humble store in Causeway Bay, he simply says, “That I am a designer foremost and businessman second and that I should be content with that.” All his extended studies did not go to waste he assures, as this foundation has helped him manage design, aesthetics, functionality and economy all at once.

In time, impressions of the designerbusinessman have changed and what he has noticed recently is the customer base has changed. “The attitude of Hong Kong people towards local culture has definitely evolved. There is now a lot more awareness and desire for it.” He

finds pride in one’s own culture and a fond nostalgia of all things Hong Kong-related, something which he always had when studying abroad.

Looking remarkably young, pardon the easy-pun, years in the industry also means he runs into young designers, self-starters and new generation aspirants who quote him as being their inspiration and business role-model. “I am tremendously flattered,” he says when we discuss inspiration. “And I would not hesitate to pass on my wisdom and experience to the next generation.”

When asked who inspired him, he says without hesitation,“Terence Conran [English designer, restaurateur, retailer and writer] was a big influence.” A multi-hyphenate like himself, it’s easy to see why. The only difference between the two perhaps being that Conran eventually sold his businesses to larger corporations. Would you ever sell?

“Of course. I’m a prostitute [laughs]!”

出身建築設計師的楊志超，當年創設這 個既謔且諧的本地品牌 G.O.D.( 英語字 母與廣東話諧音格讀成“住好啲”，作 為初創小企業，不少行家若不是嗤之以 鼻，頂多一笑置之；想不到這個品牌比 較很多批評它的人士更長壽。

搜尋往績檔案，令不少人感到不安或冒 犯；好像刻上祼體的中秋月餅，印著粗 鄙不文的咒詛俚語和專用語辭。 2007 年 時出產一件印有 14K 黑社會圖案色彩的 T 恤引起全城哄動， G.O.D. 全部員工 18 人集體被捕，一起在羈留所渡過了好 幾十個鐘頭。楊志超常常成為小報頭條， 這樣的宣傳，今時今日，絕對不是金錢

或嗜愛可以隨時隨地買得到。請千萬不 要錯看，這清狂小子是行業開拓者、營 運者、主導者，二十多年來成功運作， 表面上看似反叛不�開玩笑，竟在是心 若有所思，情繫我城。

反問 1996 年十月他在銅鑼灣第一間小 店開張時，會有甚麼企盼？楊志超雲淡 風輕地答應：“那些年我首先是設計師， 第二才是生意人。做好一個設計師，我 已經心滿意足。”但他沒有浪費他的學 識和堅毅，將設計、美學、實用和經濟 一爐共治，相得益彰。

時代遷移，商業設計師的靈視有所改變， 他愈感到顧客群體的口味亦有所不同： “香港人面對本土文化的態度肯定地有 所演變，愈來愈多關注和希冀擁抱它。” 楊志超對於自己的香港本土文化感到驕 傲和緬懷，香港一切都繫我心弦，當年 負笈海外時都已經如此。

年輕、隨和，在這行業成功混了不少年 頭；現在很多年輕設計師、首創一族、 尋夢者都視楊志超為靈感大師和商業偶 像。他如是說：“我絕對是受寵若驚， 我會毫不猶豫無不保留地將我的視點和 經驗傳承給年輕一代。”

問到誰對他影響最大？“英國設計家、 餐飲業者、零售商、作家特倫斯康蘭對 我影響最大最深遠。”兩人都是多面手， 點石成金。我看不同的是特倫斯最終將 生意賣給了大企業，我問楊志超 : 你會 賣嗎？

“當然賣，我是男妓。( 笑到咳！ )”

The first whiskey distillery to open in Dublin in over 125 years, Teeling has single-handedly helped forge a renaissance in Ireland’s whiskey making tradition. Located in the city centre, in historic Liberties, close to where Walter Teeling, an ancestor of the family, established a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in 1782, the expansive complex offers fully guided tours that delve into the production processes and which conclude with a tasting from the award-winning Teeling range. Be sure to book ahead as these tours are popular.

Despite only being a few years old, The Greenhouse is already a local culinary institution; its intimate dining room is dressed in velvet, timber and brooding leather and remains a favourite with local politicians (the Oireachtas, Ireland’s parliament) is around the corner, who arrive in their droves to test the skills of the resident sommelier and to sample the ever-changing seasonal menus, which include delectable dishes like 80 day aged Glenarm shorthorn beef with lacquered sweetbread, buttermilk, and green sauce; and wild seatrout tartare with oyster Chantilly, sorrel and trout roe. If you’re not in a hurry opt for the six-course tasting menu.

Only given legal status in 1997 after 300 years of prohibition, the endemic spirit of Ireland isn’t whisky but Poitín, a local moonshine, and Dublin’s first Poitín watering hole, Bar 1661, is the perfect place to sample this unique spirit and its rich tradition for yourself. The creation of mixologist Dave Mulligan, a Dubliner who made a name for himself in London’s top cocktail corners, Bar 1661 specialises in Irish spirits, including Mulligan’s own Bán Poitín,

with locally produced spirits ranging from 40-90 per cent ABV. Don’t worry, the bar also has a great list of more refined Irish single malts.
