Firstly, thank you all so much for your support in this magazine launch. When I became a finalist in the Ms. Diamond UK pageant in 2019, I never thought what an unprecedented year now we would have. Due to lockdown(s) I have created a magazine in aid of raising money for the Samaritans.

During lockdown 1.0 I created a pageant lockdown blog where I interviewed over 150 pageant queens from across the globe then during lockdown 2.0, I enrolled on a number of college courses 4 of which being digital skills, so I then came up with the idea of charity magazine called Crowns and Sashes Magazine for pageants girls and women of all ages and all systems to be able to share their pageant journeys with us all while raising vital funds for charity.

I have been incredibly overwhelmed with everyone’s support in creating this and hopefully I will be able to continue this on a monthly basis.

I would like to thank each and every one you that has entered the front cover competition or submitted content, congratulations to all the winners and thank you to the judges I know it was a difficult job.

HELLO, HELLO, HELLO! It’s your friendly Assistant Editor here, Lyndsay!

I am so grateful to be able to use my qualifications to help Charlotte in bringing this amazing magazine to you!

Each month, we’ll have cover stars, inside cover stars… so many stars!! As well as some stunning people littered throughout our magazine, we’ll be bringing you the latest trends and advice from the pageant world, shining a light on the platforms that you’re so passionate about and actually speaking to some of the Queens, finalists and behind the scenes people that make this wonderful world of Pageant possible for all of us. OH! And the added bonus is that we’re also raising vital funds for Samaritans, who help people every day to overcome their mental health issues and save so many lives each year.

The work of Samaritans is so close to my heart as my pageant platform and passion is mental health awareness, so it’s nice to be able to keep them doing the amazing jobs they do.

Anyway, sit back, relax with a cuppa (or your hot beverage of choice) and enjoy Issue #1 of Crowns and Sashes Magazine!

her mind the first time she had a smear test.

There are lots of stories out there pertaining to Women’s Health issues. This is a reflective story.

At 56 years young, sitting at home during lockdown somewhere in the Garden of England, Classic Diamond Kent 20/21 is in reflective mood.

She has seen a campaign about the smear test. She wants to write so much. She wants to use her wisdom to make change.

She remembers the late Jade Goody; a young lady full of promise that had come to the media attention through the show ‘Big Brother’. In the years following she had been diagnosed with Cervical Cancer and sadly died. Her aim during her diagnosis (and prior to her death) was to lower the age of smear tests and to urge everyone to get a test.

CMDK, we shall call her (initials used for Classic Miss Diamond Kent) now recalls in

She was petrified. She’d heard the horror stories. She felt embarrassed and as if she had a gun to her head, pushing her to go. She went as cancer was quite common in her family.

She remembered going into the doctor’s surgery. She was young (25) she dreaded seeing her doctor, who was a man. She had a chaperone (a person she had asked to come in), in this case, the practice nurse.

The procedure was not painful. It was a little uncomfortable and there was a little bit of pressure as the speculum was inserted in her vagina (this allows the person doing the test to access the cervix) but relaxing, the test was soon done.

A sample of cells from her cervix was collected on a little, soft brush and sent off to the lab.

She had remained dressed, just keeping her clothes on and removing her knickers, all the while remaining covered by a small blanket.

The next time she went, a few years after, she was more relaxed and had referred to it as an MOT. From just before her 25th birthday she had been invited to have the smear done then every 3 years after.

This would go on until she was 49. Then, at 50, she would go every 5 years until she was 64, or 65 if one of her last tests had been abnormal.

This was the plan. She carried on going to her tests and then something happened. Ever since her daughter was born when she was 30 years old (a pregnancy termed as a geriatric pregnancy) she had experienced some problems; pain and bleeding in-between periods and a couple of cysts on her ovaries. The cysts were removed. She also had the condition Endometriosis; a very painful condition and quite a common one.

Some years later, she had her 6th smear test (having had them done every 3 years since she was 25yrs old) and was now 43 years old. Everything was fine.

Then in the March of 2009, when she went into hospital for a routine operation, she woke up with the surgeon at her bedside telling her that he could not do the operation, as they had found something.

The Surgeon apologised, saying he had no idea and that previous scans had shown nothing.

Life is what gets in-between the best laid plans. She had lost her husband suddenly, only a year before.

The long and short of it was that a longer stay in hospital was needed, then a trip to see an oncologist. Following that, another stay in hospital for a month and some treatment in readiness for the operation.

The treatment was to attempt to shrink what had been found.

On the day of the operation, which was scheduled for approximately 3 hours, consent forms were signed, and a chat was given about possible complications. She was walked down to theatre and arrived at the prep room before the operation.

Some 10 hours later she was wheeled back to her room and was greeted by her 13-yearold daughter, who had been terrified that she was about to lose her mother, the same as she had lost her father exactly a year ago to the day. He had died unexpectedly on a day out with the family.

Now CMDK, very sore and feeling like she had been run over by a steam engine, was hooked up to so many tubes and machines, awaiting the news. She knew something was very wrong. Her operation was only supposed to take 3 hours but had taken 10.

The consultant was now at her bedside. He said “we think we got it all. A tumour the size of a small baby was found. We had to do a full radical hysterectomy; everything is gone.” Silence, she was reeling with the words baby, the date, the memories. A year had passed since her husband had died; they were going to try for another baby when he had finished his Army career.

Now he was gone. “We also had to take your lymph nodes, part of your bladder and a little bit of your bowel. I haven’t had to put in a stoma and I have sent the tumour to the lab” said the consultant.

Thank God she thought, thank God I haven’t got a stoma bag.

Laying in the bed, feeling very unwell and thinking of what might have been, she was feeling very empty and alone. She was having treatment and lots of blood tests but then got Pneumonia, meaning that she needed to stay an extra 2 months in hospital.

Now, in reflective mood, she felt blessed to be alive, thanks to the wonderful team of doctors and nurses.

“But you had your smear tests done and you still had to have a hysterectomy, so what’s the point?”

I hear you say.

The point is, it’s about women’s health and a smear test doesn’t stop cancer, but it can help detect abnormalities; a change in cells that can be an early indicator of cancer and, caught early enough, can give better chances of survival with treatment.

I wasn’t fortunate enough to have my cell changes detected in time, the ironic thing is that my consultant thinks that, due to the size of my tumour, it had been growing for about 12-18 months, so in between my last two smears. My last smear was when I was 43 years old my operation was when I was 45.

At 56, I am thankful for the 11 more years of life I’ve had. I am not cancer free. I have Bowen’s Disease (a form of skin cancer) but I was cancer free for a good 9 years. I consider myself lucky; a survivor.

So, I ask all of you to have regular smear tests and if you are worried then you can take a chaperone. If you have questions, write them down and ask them. The test doesn’t hurt, but cancer does. It is less than 5 minutes out of your day.

Cancer can take many more, shorten your life, break a heart and leave loved ones lost. You can help to prevent so much, in just under 5 minutes.

In our world of pageants, we lift each other up as the family we are. We support and we advocate for so much and

well, women, it is so important.

So, at the beginning of this reflective story, you may remember I wanted to use my wisdom. Please allow me...

I ask you all to embrace life.

Make a promise to yourself to use your time wisely and (after your 25th birthday) take the time, just 5 minutes every 3 years, to get a smear test done. And in the words of Shania Twain: “Feel like a woman�. A well woman.

And shine like a Diamond.

What made you enter pageants?

I entered pageants as I wanted to try something new, make new friends and step out my comfort zone. I also wanted to progress with my skills such as interview and interpersonal skills by being able to get involved with different things. I wanted to raise more awareness of causes I care about and put them to a wider audience.

What previous systems have you competed in?

This is the second time I have competed, and I am going back to the Miss Inspiration UK system for the same regional title. I feel I have grown a lot over the last year by competing in pageants and have done things I never thought I would, which has been a great achievement for me, so I am very happy with that. I have organised my own events this year and I’ve really enjoyed my journey as I’ve just got stuck in.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I researched systems and Miss Inspiration UK stood out to me, as it welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and there are no restrictions such as height etc. It also it welcomes individuals who are beginners and experienced. The team building activities are lovely with the PJ Party. I love the sisterhood and it’s like a family.

What have pageants taught you?

That it’s vital to be yourself and so the best version of you. You are a role model to others and to yourself by showing you. It has taught me resilience, as there is always going to be someone who doesn’t understand pageants that may comment negatively due to a lack of insight, but you have to do things for you and no one else. It has taught me to be confident and take pride in yourself and your achievements.

What is your platform and why?

My platform is Give Time, which is heavily fuelled by volunteering in my community and I have done that since I was 15. I have a ten-year volunteer service badge for giving my time at a Cancer Research UK shop. I’d love to be able to take this to a national level by educating people about how giving their time impacts them in a positive manner as well as their community.

What’s your dream title?

At the moment its Miss Inspiration UK, the title I am working to obtain. As long I know I’ve worked as hard as I can, when I obtain this title, I know it will be when the time is right.

What would you do if you were to win?

I have some plans in place if I was to win the title and I’d be over the moon! I have an abseil planned down Derby Cathedral in April to raise money for the Derby Hospital Charity. I’d volunteer at a night shelter for the homeless and take part in the 5K fundraisers Colour Run and Race for Life.

What advice would you give to fellow contestants?

I would say just be yourself throughout whatever you do, not just in pageants but in life as well. It’s very easy to try and fit a certain mould or stereotype as we think that’s what others want to see, but it’s not; they want to see YOU as YOU and no one else.

What have you been doing in the lead up?

I’ve organised two fashion shows to fundraise for your chosen charity (Samaritans), Cardiac Risk in The Young, Cancer Research UK and our nursery outdoor area. It was loads of fun and a lot of pageant girls came to support, which I am grateful for. I have volunteered my time at the night shelter and outreach for the homeless. I have volunteered and taken part in 5k races for Cancer Research UK. I

have set up a project called @fiercefootforwardx It interviews individuals about confidence, to help people to see that we are all confident just the way we are.

What is your favourite appearance?

It has to be taking part in the group 5k races. It’s great to complete these as a support group and there is always an amazing atmosphere. You get your medal at the end and it’s all for a good cause.

Has COVID-19 affected your pageant journey?

Even though our pageant had been postponed, pageantry kept me going during lockdown as it was something to keep me occupied. I got involved in campaigns and volunteered in my local community as a volunteer responder to help those who needed it during the pandemic. I also set up a side project called @foercefootforwardx to help with confidence and interviewed individuals during lockdown about their views on confidence. I’ve now made badges and keyrings so far, to go alongside this.

What makes a good role model?

A role model is someone who isn’t afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Sometimes it may ruffle some feathers, but if that’s what you stand for then you do that! People will respect you more for that than covering it up and standing for something you don’t even have any interest in. It’s important to have a good work ethic and to uphold a professional manner, as others will look up to you.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

I love Inspiration wear as it’s a round that you can wear something that makes you feel inspired. It can be your uniform, a dress or even a hobby that represents you.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I just try and remember why I’m there and try to have as much fun as possible as well as talking to those around you.

Debbie Hughes is currently a finalist for the first ever Miss Great Britain Classic 2021. The pageant celebrated its 75th anniversary last year with the introduction of the first ever Ms section seeing April Banbury crowned Ms Great Britain 2020 alongside Jen Atkin the 75th Miss Great Britain. Debbie is hoping to be crowned the very first Ms Great Britain Classic and encourage other classic ladies to follow their ambitions, the pageant is open to ladies over the age of 40 so at the age of 52 Debbie said she sure will have her work cut out but is ready to take on the biggest challenge of her life.

She is no stranger to the pageant world having competed back in the 80’s and 90’s, and her daughter Heidi followed in her footsteps and competed for 3 consecutive years with Miss Teen Great Britain before going on to compete in her first pageant as a “Miss” last year and was lucky enough to take the title of Miss Midlands UK after qualifying at the final of 4 heats in Birmingham then competing alongside 25 other hopefuls.

Debbie has also directed 3 charity pageants over the past 4 years and raised over £40,000 for charities including The Peter Pan Centre for Children with Special Needs in Staffordshire for which she has been an ambassador for the past 5 years. This year she will be presenting her 4th pageant alongside her fellow director and also fellow pageant sister for Ms GB Classic Laura White. Miss Pageant Queen UK will take place in Cheshire in September 2021.

As if this wasn’t enough Debbie also founded The Pias back in 2019! The Pageant Industry Awards celebrates the Pageant Industry and recognises the work that goes into various elements of pageantry resulting in an Oscar style presentation evening at the end of the year.

What made you enter pageants?

I’ve always loved the idea of pageants but never knew how to get started. In January 2020 I joined a casting website and got in touch with the director of RIM through that and figured the new year was a perfect time to finally start!

Have you competed before if so, can you tell us about your journey?

My first and only so far. My only live pageant was the Royal International Miss UK finals in February 2020. I loved every second of the experience and immediately caught the pageant bug but unfortunately a month later we all went into lockdown due to COVID. I’ve been doing my best to keep active in the pageant community though by raising money for my chosen platform and taking part in online charity pageants/campaigns.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I had researched a few systems, but Royal International Miss UK really stood out to me and I honestly fell in love with them from the start! They’re so inclusive accepting contestants of any age, size, marital status, having tattoos is fine, they welcome you with open arms and you’re immediately made to feel like family.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

To believe in myself a lot more than I do. I entered my first pageant purely for the experience, slightly worried I’d end up being laughed off the stage and I ended up placing in the top 5 of my division. That was a real eye opener for me that you really can do anything you put your mind to.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

I’ve been trying to keep as active in the pageant community as possible and doing a lot of practising! I’ve been raising money for SAMH throughout the year and working on different awareness/fundraising campaigns. I’ve also been doing some training and trying to perfect my walk, doing the dishes and cooking dinner in my heels has become a daily occurrence!

Favourite ever appearance?

Unfortunately, due to COVID I haven’t been able to do many appearances, but I did take part in the Virtual Kiltwalk in September. I walked over 7K and managed to raise £135 for SAMH. I was by myself, but I documented everything on Snapchat so that those who’d sponsored me could come along.

How has the lockdown due to Covid19 affected your pageant journey?

I’ve not been able to meet a lot of my fellow Scottish queenies which I’d really been looking forward to and I’ve not been able to do as much volunteering as I would have liked to, but I’ve made sure to keep up my presence online and I’m in touch with a few places that I’ll hopefully be able to volunteer with once lockdown eases! I have a big fundraising idea that I’ve been wanting to do for months now but again, it’ll need to wait until things are a bit more back to normal.

Has your reign been extended due to COVID19?

Our finals were supposed to be at the end of January 2021 but has now been moved to July 2021 in order to give the 2020 queens the opportunity to compete at Internationals in Florida this summer which they weren’t able to do last year which 100% believe has been the right choice as it means they still get their chance at the international crown and it gives the rest of us longer to prepare for the UK finals!

What makes a good pageant role model?

To me, a pageant role model should be approachable and willing to help out others. One of my favourite things about RIM is that there is no hierarchy between the contestants and existing/past queens. We’re all rooting for each other and want each other to do well, that’s what makes a good role model to me. As I said before, the journey and friendships made is what’s important. Walking away with a crown is an added bonus.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

I love fun fashion as it gives you a chance to have fun and show off your personality. However, I actually really enjoy the interview round! It gives you a chance to sit down with the judges and let them get to know you properly, before you hit the stage.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I did a lot of theatre while growing up so I should be used to being on stage, but nerves never go away! I think nerves are a good thing though because you can use them as energy for when you walk on stage. Jumping about/dancing backstage helps calm me down if they’re particularly bad!

What is the best thing that pageants have taught you?

I have not competed in the main pageant yet due to the pandemic, but one thing that I have found when competing virtually is that we all rise from raising each other up and encouraging each other, bringing forward each other. It is not the winning but the taking part. We are family and we all sparkle together.

What is your chosen platform and why?”

Having seen my daughter enter many pageants it has inspired me to dip my toe in the water.

Many years ago, I modelled, then on becoming a Mother, I dedicated my time to the best achievement of all time: Motherhood. Now some years later (it is said life begins at 50!) here I am in unchartered territory for me and owning my time, it’s now or never and I never say never.

What made you decide to enter your current system?

I decided to enter in my current system, Miss Diamond United Kingdom, because this system is all about empowerment of women. This goes further than

skin deep. It goes to the core of the woman, embraces the strengths, removes the weaknesses and insecurities that so many women have. It recognises that a good diamond has many facets, as do women; we all sparkle.

It’s about promoting the beauty and diversity of women.

We all have our own niche (or character) from a very young age and this, when nurtured, brings forward a treasure, a jewel in a Crown.

The system is open to the more senior ladies, proving that a senior age does not bring forward a lack lustre, in fact quite the contrary! It allows so much more.

My chosen pageant platforms (I have two) are the Children’s Trust and Neuroblastoma UK. Neuroblastoma UK is a charity that raises awareness and much needed funds for children with Neuroblastoma. Every week in the UK two families are given the devastating news that their child has this rare form of cancer. It is a cancer which develops from cells left behind from development in the womb. Neuroblastoma UK is a national charity which raises money for projects that will help find a cure or help make treatment kinder.

The Children’s Trust is a charity which help children who have suffered brain injury through trauma or illness. The trust raises funds to help facilitate those who are suffering, in that they deliver rehabilitation, education and community services to the sufferer and their families, also facilitating specialist care from their Tadworth base. I have chosen both of these because they are close to my heart; Cancer is non-discriminative and, in the young, very invasive. It is cruel at any age, and to strike at the beginning of life is so unfair. Everyone must have the chance of life. We must

give life a chance, so we must find a cure to give back quality of life and new beginnings.

What have you been doing in the run up to your Pageant final?

Head trauma is also close to my heart. To see a child struck down after an accident is devastating. It is about giving a sense of normality and a ‘can do’ opportunity to those that are suffering, to open doors of education and new opportunity and to bring them from a dark place to the sunlight.

Networking with many people, meeting new people, promoting my chosen charity platforms. Taking part in virtual pageants which have been a lot of fun. I’ve been trying to keep fit and buying so many different outfits (a girl can never have enough dresses!) and I must remember the shoes (I have more boots than shoes ha ha!). In general, I have been on a journey of promoting my chosen charities and the system I represents chosen charities, whilst representing my county too.

My system’s charities are the Samaritans and Well-being of Woman.

What is your dream title?

In short, to be Classic Diamond UK and to go on and represent internationally in Las Vegas.

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

If I was to win, this would be a dream come true. It would give me the opportunity to carry on raising much needed funds through networking. On a personal note, it would give me a feeling of self-worth and achievement and a sense of pride too. It would lift me, and it would give me a chance to carry on with the legacy, that is Classic Diamond, that previous winners have set. The chance to represent those of us Women of a certain age category in the UK. What’s the best advice you have for fellow Pageant Queens?

That’s a thought-provoking question and I don’t think there is one set answer. For me, it is about being the best you, ever.

So, be yourself keep it real.

Favourite ever appearance?

This year has been unprecedented due to COVID19, so every appearance has been a bonus. Every single one is unique on its own merit, so I don’t have a favourite yet.

had time to prepare, find myself, quietly reflect and adapt. It has allowed me self-growth. On the note of growth, I had got into the habit of eating the wrong foods, (naughty me! I couldn’t dine out, so I would order in, well… the new going out was dining in!) but now have reverted to eating healthy and have lost a few pounds.

What makes a good Pageant role model?

It is my considered opinion that a good role model is a person who will go the extra mile for the system she represents, never forgetting she represents that system, and herself, as a collaboration of both in that you only get one chance… first impressions last. A role model is someone that can be looked up to, a setting of the bar, so one must have integrity, kindness the ability to promote an ethos which is moral and presentable to all in the community and the pageant community. So, be kind, be your best self and be real. Give hope and charity in compassion, lift up your fellow pageant family too.

How has the lockdown due to COVID-19 affected your pageant journey?

It certainly has been a journey that none of us had envisaged.

For me personally, although the dates have been rescheduled, it has bought forward reflection and a journey of self-discovery. Selfdiscovery in that I have learned to be kinder to myself, to know its ok to recognise one’s limits, its ok to not be ok all the time and that I am more resilient than I have ever thought, in that adaption is key. So out of a negative situation (that our pageant has had to be rescheduled) it has bought positives in that I have

Kayleigh Louise Kayleigh, aged 30, is the current Ms. Lincolnshire in Young European Ms. International (YEMI) and admin and mentor for the Pageant Society UK. Her pageant platform is Lupus Awareness, which is a chronic autoimmune disease and something that she lives with.

When not competing, she is studying for a degree in Accounting and Finance at University Centre Peterborough.

Sasha is the current Junior Miss Diamond UK. Sasha says she is excited to see what’s in store and is very honoured to judging this incredible competition. A massive well done to everyone involved! Sasha has been judging pageants, photo competitions and modelling competitions for some time and is looking for confidence, creativity and something that stands out.

Urszula is a wife, teacher, traveler, adventurer, life-style model, volunteer and pageant enthusiast, as well as the first ever Ms. Regal World 20/21.

She has been married to her husband for over 10 years and they have a Russian Blue kitten named Ulush. Urszula is a teacher by trade, with a Master of Education from the University of Toronto.

Representing the West Midlands for the November 2021 Mrs Galaxy, United Kingdom Pageant, Leigh is proof that anything can be achieved with enough determination, courage and resolve. Despite being hampered by learning difficulties and autism, Leigh was able to Graduate from Birmingham City University with a degree in BA Hons Fine art and business; a feat thought impossible in her early school years. Now a qualified Artist, Leigh has spent most of her time selling her artwork at exhibitions and events, raising money for charity and bringing awareness around ASD and Dyslexia though volunteer work and pageants.

Leigh enjoys writing stories and comics for children and adults to enjoy; with the motive to encourage children to aspire and inspire, while working towards their dreams even if they feel insurmountable.

Leigh has been involved with the National Society of Autism and The Buddy Bag Foundation. When not taking part in charity work, she works as an International agency fashion model, SA, double and actor, receiving her own IMDB Profile for involvement in Film Productions and as a Presenter for different TV brands. Being creative and putting her skills to use is her main passion; she loves to learn from challenges she faces in life. Away from the creative space, Leigh enjoys sports and relishes any opportunity to help and encourage others to be their best self.

Her involvement as a Motorcycle Race-Team Technician means there is never a dull moment for Leigh and always a chance for a new and wonderful experience.

What made you enter pageants?

I think I saw someone on Instagram had entered MTGB and I thought “whey why not! Let’s see if I’d actually get accepted into something like this” and it turns out I did!! Part of me was just really intrigued if someone like me could ever end up doing something like this, as in a beauty pageant, when you have multiple chronic/mental illnesses, turns out you can and I’m buzzing!!!!!

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

MTGB was the first one I applied for as that was the only one I really knew at the time, as I said previously. And then once I started following more people within the pageant community on Instagram, I realised there were different types of pageants. UK nationals feels like the most empowering and feminine pageant out of them all and I’m super excited to take part in the first of its kind, especially as they have a sportswear round, instead of a swimwear! Galaxy pageants is a classic isn’t it! The glitz and glamour, the International aspect and the full-on beauty pageant dream, what girl wouldn’t want to try that?

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is raising awareness for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Eating

disorders. As a person who suffers from both, I’ve been trying to raise awareness for all my illnesses before I even started pageants! EDS is something most doctors and people haven’t heard of. Even I didn’t know it existed till 2019. It’s a genetic disorder. So, by using my platform, I can make people more aware of the signs and symptoms. In relation to eating disorders, by using my platform, I’m hoping girls like me might come forward and realise they can get help and reach their goals and do what they want.

What’s your dream title?

This is so hard! My dream title would be Miss Galaxy or Miss International UK. If you were to win what would it mean to you?

This is a hard one to answer because I can’t imagine the feeling, if you get me? But I think it would be so overwhelming for me, in a good way of course. I’ve never really won anything before so winning something based on myself and my appearance would mean a lot.

I’m also doing pageants for all the girls out there with hidden disabilities, or invisible illnesses, so to win for them would be a dream.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

Be yourself because that’s all anyone can ever ask for!

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

I have been making TikToks, wearing my sash, to raise awareness on @kinder.buemo. I’ve called it my Pageant Awareness Series, alongside my regular TikToks.

Favourite ever appearance?

I’ve not really done any appearances due to COVID, but I was a part of Miss Teen Hartlepool’s video series of raising awareness for various illnesses. I don’t know when the video will be up though!!

How has the lockdown due to COVID19 affected your pageant journey?

It really has, as I can’t do physical appearances or shopping for things I need for the pageants. It’s also really affecting my mental health and confidence.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Someone who is inspirational and engages with their followers/fans. A person who gives back but also makes sure to take time for themselves because you need to remember to put you first.

By Becky Farran – Ms Lancashire Atlantic 2020/2021 Experiencing nerves at a pageant is to be expected. Either before the interviews, walking out on stage or simply meeting lots of new people. As pageant girls we are most likely to be nervous because we have attached huge importance to the outcome of the final event, and we will all feel different degrees of this nervous reaction. Other factors may be that you are a naturally shy person, you are competing in your first ever pageant, or perhaps you have never set foot on a stage before. Although many pageant girls have experience in performing arts or modelling, there will always be an element of nervousness lingering in our bodies; like hairspray lingering in the air backstage. Signing up to compete in a pageant means agreeing to test and challenge yourself, whilst working towards a goal so, an element of fear is somewhat healthy.

Biologically, our nerves make us aware and alert for danger. Our nervous system is triggered when our brain perceives there is a threat. This is a primal instinct that all humans have had since the Stone Age. You have most likely heard of the term 'fight or flight', and although we are not under threat any more from woolly mammoths or lions, this natural response still very much exists within us today. Nowadays, the dread is based around social acceptance. As a contestant there is a longing to be liked by the judges, the audience and our peers (plus we all aim at not tripping up whilst gliding in our evening wear!).

Physically, the body redirects blood to the heart and muscles, giving you that 'butterflies in your stomach' feeling. The body also produces more adrenaline, which can make us more likely to fidget. Our breathing becomes faster and we sweat (I know... it's gross...maybe invest in a good fake tan!).

So, how do we calm ourselves and proceed to be mindful when the nerves start kicking in? When you notice these symptoms then you can take action to combat anxiety and it is as simple as noticing your breath. As yoga and meditation becomes more popular in the world, it is clear that the breath is our life force and power, when used in certain ways. There are many techniques to breathing that we can use to reverse the panic that may rise within us, either before our interview with the judges or before stepping out in front of the audience. These exercises I have to share with you can be discrete and used without any fellow contestants being aware, or perhaps you would feel more comfortable finding a quiet space to practice in before the day begins. There is no right or wrong it's about what is best for you!

Ujjayi Breath A calming breath with a constriction in the throat during exhale. Practice when sitting and relax the muscles in the face, neck and shoulders, breathing naturally in and out of the nose, keeping the lips closed, whilst trying to create a whispery sound in the back of the throat. Some imagine fogging up a mirror to get the emphasis of the sound. This breath is also known as 'Ocean Breath' as it compares to the sound of waves (or if you're a Star Wars fan then even Darth Vader!). Practice this breath for 10 rounds: breathe in for the count of 4 and breathe out for a count of 4, bringing balance to the body.

Counting 3-6-7 Breath Practise while sitting comfortably. Whenever we inhale, our heartbeat goes a little faster to when we exhale, so we want to aim at making our exhales longer with each breath and effectively slow down our heart rate. With your mouth closed, quietly inhale through your nose mentally counting to 3. Hold the breath while counting to 6, then gently exhale counting to 7. This can then be extended to the counts of 4,7,8. If you experience dizziness, stop and return to your normal breathing pattern.

Shift Your Perspective When self-doubt creeps in, it is important that we remain focused on positive self-talk. Tell your brain to be realistic and rationalise your fear. No matter what the outcome of this pageant may be, tell yourself 'it is not the end of the world'. Choose an affirmation that resonates with you and repeat it in your mind with every exhale breath. For example, the famous quote by Thich Nhat Hahn 'Breathing in, I calm my body, breathing out, I smile'. Smiling releases endorphins and genuinely makes us feel good, plus everyone will be happy to see your smiling face any time during the competition.

Nerves hit us most when we are under-prepared, so organise and practice, until you can sashay into your next pageant feeling as confident and ready as you could possibly be. Finally, make sure you eat, drink and sleep well with the knowledge that you are exactly where you need to be.

Interview with Jasmine Catherine Pearce Miss Teen Global Darling, Miss Global Darling Spokesmodel and Charity Queen

What made you enter pageants?

Throughout high school, I was bullied and suffered badly with anxiety - my confidence was at an all-time low. My mum and I found a charity pageant taking place near us, run by the KPA, and we both decided it might be a good way to regain some of my confidence and maybe I’ll also meet a couple of friends. In reality, I regained most of my confidence back, and made tonnes of new friends in the pageant community. Pageants helped me get me back again.

Can you tell us about your pageant journey?

Early on during my time as a finalist for Miss Global Darling, I was lucky enough to hold my charity gala in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation, raising £3,133. Unfortunately, soon after this event we went into the first lockdown, however, being in lockdown showed me how resilient the pageant community can be. My director ran some Zoom calls to help us all stay connected, and I joined an online pageant, Miss Regal World, connecting so many girls from around the world.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I completely resonated with Miss Global Darling’s mission; to be the change you wish to see in the world. I had also gotten in touch with one of the finalist’s parents and saw how happy their child was in the system!

What is the best thing that pageants have taught you?

Pageants have taught me to stay true to myself - I spent so long trying to please everyone else, rather than myself.

Through pageants, I’ve learnt that you can be yourself and find people who will love you for that, and those friends can become your family.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is Embrace All of You. Its aim is to raise awareness for those living with disabilities and invisible illnesses. I decided to create this platform, with the help of CJB Pageantry, as it wholly resonates with me after I was diagnosed with meningitis in 2005 and left blind in one eye, and due to my battle with anxiety. I don’t believe enough is done to help those with mental health issues, or those with disabilities - both visible and invisible.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title is definitely one of the UK Galaxy titles; after seeing the journey of last year’s winners, I absolutely fell in love with the system and all the incredible experiences it brings. Additionally, the finals themselves look incredible and bundles of fun to be a part of!

What was it like when you won?

When I won my titles in September, I was beyond gobsmacked and speechless. I was, and still am, so excited for the rest of my year; to have the opportunity to promote my platform on an even greater scale means the world to me, and I can’t wait for all the exciting plans our director has in store for us.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

To enjoy every second of your journey; it’s really easy to let nerves and your own expectations bring yourself down by adding unnecessary pressure onto yourself. Pageants are about bringing people together to have fun, raise money and awareness for such important causes, and to so many they’re also about boosting self-confidence and empowerment.

What have you been doing since you won?

Since I won, I’ve been working on refining my platform, planning future events for the Meningitis Research Foundation and coming up with some possible campaign ideas. However, I’ve also been having so much fun with my sister Queens, albeit via zoom calls and texting.

Favourite ever appearance?

My favourite appearance has to be my gala in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation; after months of hard work, planning, and stress eating, the evening flowed so smoothly with all the guests thoroughly enjoying themselves, and above all it raised an amazing amount for the Foundation. I was also lucky enough to have Clare Worton (Ms/Mrs Mystic Beauty), Sharron Shulver (Miss Voluptuous England), and Emma-Jayne Relf (Miss Voluptuous UK Ambassador) attend.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

Unfortunately, it has. Our photo shoot and Queens retreat have been put on hold and our finals were online. However, I refuse to let Covid-19 cast any shadow over my journey, so I’ve been making sure I thoroughly enjoy every experience I get.

What makes a good pageant role model?

I believe a good pageant role model is someone who shows resilience, good leadership skills, passion for their platform(s), but also raw honesty.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

My favourite round is definitely fashion wear. I love being able to show off my cheeky and bubbly personality, and I adore the very fun outfits too!

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I try to remind myself of why I entered the pageant in the first place, while winning would be an incredible opportunity and achievement, I also enter for the enjoyment of meeting so many amazing girls and women and having fun - nerves would only hinder my enjoyment of the experience.

Interview with Miss Mystic Beauty - Ms. Greater Manchester 2019-2021: Sintija Ribaka What made you enter pageants?

What’s your pageant platform and why?

I was stuck in a routine and did not feel fulfilled, so being an adventurous person, I challenged myself and got involved into something new.

I love animals, that is why I became a member of PETA and a World Wildlife Fund supporter. My platform is BeMyVoice, where I talk about very heavy things, such as testing on animals and extinction. Also hope to spread the message about cruelty-free products.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

Before I get involved in something, I always do plenty of research and when I sent my application form to Miss Mystic Beauty, I had a feeling it was my system.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

By taking a part in pageants, I had to come out of my comfort zone and I have learned how to be more feminine.

What’s your dream title?

Miss Mystic Beauty Ms. Queen and after that to become Miss Mystic Beauty Queen of Queens.

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

Winning would be great, but deep inside I already feel like a winner, because I feel proud of what I have already achieved. All of my hard work, including my platform and campaigns, fundraising, community work and other projects, regardless winning a title or not, will carry on.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

From my personal experience, when you start doing something, people always will make comments and sometimes try to put you down, but do not listen to them and stick to your goals and ambitions.

Everything became more digital, whereas before we had some events to attend.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

Good reputation, having a positive attitude, being reliable and hardworking.

Before Covid-19 I had an opportunity to take a part in community events and charity pageants, but at this moment I am trying to work around lockdown and find other options and ways. I’ve been getting involved in other people’s projects and concentrating on my platform and fundraising.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

Favourite ever appearance?

I am fundraising for Samaritans and during lockdown I have created an awareness video, that has reached a wide audience on social media.

MISS MERMAID UK 2018- 2019

What made you enter pageants?

This was my first one! I LOVE Miss Congeniality and I had no idea how huge pageants were in the UK – I thought it was just an American thing. How wrong was I!?

What made you decide to compete in Miss Mermaid UK? I wanted to enter in 2017 when I first heard about Miss Mermaid UK and being a mermaid, but it was only a month before then final when I heard I had a place, I couldn’t afford to enter or drum up enough interest in sponsorship. The money I did raise for trying (about £90 from my amazing friends) I donated to charity but vowed to myself I would enter the following year.

I was also intent on attending Mermaid Camp to learn how to free dive and model underwater; something else I couldn't afford that year while I was discovering the world of self-employment after leaving a job I'd been at for 4 years!

When I went to the 3rd Mermaid Camp run by Hire A Mermaid UK, I discovered I had a natural breath holding ability (who'd have thought it?!) and came away from the 3 days of training with a natural 4-minute breath hold, somewhat of a record for Camp! Some of my fellow Mers were contestants!

I had been toying with the idea of entering MMUK in the months leading up to Camp, in case I was a total flop (pun not intended!) and couldn't get to grips with the technique of mermaiding, especially when we were told we had to do a 2-minute breath hold to pass the freediving course. I was crushed – impossibly crazy right?! I also thought applications were closed, but, to my surprise, the conversation came up at Camp.

After Camp I was told my county had no representative and would I like to enter!

YES!! Absolutely yes! I would not miss it for another year. And mermazingly, Viney Holiday Properties where Mermaid Camp took place, very kindly sponsored me for the competition to allow my new journey to continue - what an amazing story to tell! Kay still shares my adventures online and is very supportive of everything I do.

It’s a unique pageant can you tell us more about it?

Pageant with a twist! We have the usual rounds of Interview and Evening Gown, but the Swimwear round is a "Beach Wear" round, so we can wear anything from a bikini to a sun dress and a lot of the girls pop on sunglasses, hats and kimonos to bring the beach vibe to the stage. It allows the girls to be super confident on stage wearing something they feel really confident in. There is a creative round too. As for the International competition, everyone must make a top to go with their prize-winning tail from Magictail, with any accessories we want to add too. For the UK competition, this is displayed with an Eco Round where contestants are asked to create costumes from old, second hand, or charity shop buys, or (the route I went down) creating a costume out of rubbish! My entire piece was made with melted carrier bags, ring pulls, plastic bottle and milk carton plastic scales that local children painted and signed for me to add to the dress, along with newspapers, plastic can rings, and a lace up corset back ‘ribbon’ made from the top I cut off some frilled lace for a previous project! The entire pieces was fully recyclable, but it will very much be going on display in my house as it took hours!

A real labour of love. We also have the underwater rounds of the competition which take place the day before, where we have to pose underwater in mermaid tails. We only had about 3 goes each to get the perfect shots and a distance swim (where any free dive training comes in incredibly useful), swimming as far as you can in one breath, with no goggles or weights to keep you under, of course in the tail. It was made even more challenging because when you get to the other end you had to make a successful turn and keep going straight too! If any of us had a talent, we had the chance to send in submission videos, to be judged beforehand, and the Top Six were chosen to perform on the night, for an additional chance to win a secondary title, but not for overall points, to make it fair for everyone The pageant opened many doors including being a real-life mermaid. What’s that like?

IT'S THE BEST! I could not ever have imagined how my life would change, just by discovering this world by chance. I get to travel all over the country performing in Aquariums, with some amazing girls who are my Mersisters. They are all so lovely, and our friendship is like no other. We all share the same talent, passion and dedication for something that, quite often, others don't understand! I have been able to meet some fintastic little guppies too at our Dry Land Meet and Greets, even talking to one family who were holidaying in Scarborough but had seen me perform 215 miles away in Great Yarmouth just a few months earlier and recognised me! I never thought I'd be a collector of anything, but my mermaid tail collection is growing, with 6 so far, a 7th being gifted soon, and an 8th I plan to make! I've also had countless newspapers follow my story. I've made several appearances on BBC Radio Lincolnshire, have been on the local BBC news, printed in Pick Me Up AND made a Channel 4 short documentary on "My Other Life" for online release - I have been so blown away by everything, and it's only been 2 and a half years!

What’s the worst thing about being a mermaid?

How tiring it actually is to perform and how much effort goes into each show. Whether it's on dry land or in the water, it saps your energy levels so much! Always smiling, always determined to keep the enthusiasm and believability when you're on set, especially when you're telling stories about being a young mermaid growing up with the Turtles in the Galapagos Islands to the youngsters and an adult asks you where you bought your tail from... Performing life is always a challenging one, driving up and down the country, staying away in hotels or other people's houses, and getting a good night's sleep before another show day when all you're panicking about is whether you packed your bikini top and waterproof setting spray! It can be exhausting, but I wouldn't change it for the world.

We also have a lot of saline solution that we have to flush through our ears, nose, mouth, and eyes after each aquarium show to ensure we don't get a zoonotic disease.......it's SO unglamorous when your nose is dripping like a waterfall!

How has Covid-19 effected your life as a mermaid?

We have been unable to perform any shows, as indoor performances were not allowed during lockdown and it was utterly heartbreaking, as we had another FIN-credible year of shows around the country lined up. My diary suddenly looked very empty and very human! We had a glimmer of hope when restrictions were lifted, and the tiering system was in place. We were able to tank test a new, absolutely stunning, venue, ready for when audiences are allowed to come back, and have socially distanced shows at Sea Life Manchester. I was able to perform in a weekend of Halloween shows, but performed to two families standing at either end of the window, rather than a full room of eager eyes. It was a challenge as we can't really see people through the blur of the water, so we had to hope our eye line was spot on to those individual family groups! Really missing my girls and of course all the animals. Ernie the Turtle in Manchester will be missing us all I'm sure!

You have been making scrubs for the NHS, as well as face masks to help protect people. Why did you decide to do this?

With all my work cancelled overnight, I could not face sitting around doing nothing all day. I'm always on the go, always busy and usually doing 2 jobs some days (my record was 4 jobs in one day!) and I just couldn't comprehend nothing. I came across For the Love of Scrubs on Facebook and leapt into action - I knew I had to help. With a fashion degree and over a decade of seamstress experience, as well as being a Sewing Teacher, I had the skills and the time to pour into helping. The biggest challenge was the funding, as we needed people to donate money or suitable material to help us get going. So, I was helped by a newspaper and radio appeal, securing sponsorship from my old manager from 12 years ago! I organised the money and bought the material we needed, cutting it all up into manageable pieces and allocating it to some of my fellow ‘Scrubbers’, with the help of one of our local coordinators who put up a donation and drop off table in her front garden! I was sewing almost every day to help get our local hospitals what they needed, as part of the community, and handover day with members of the Round Table, and two of the hospital nurses was just incredible. I started making masks to keep my small business going over summer, after having three requests on the same day from friends. I ended up making over 300 high quality masks, going out to people all over the country and, of course, some of them were mermaid themed! I wanted to be able to do my bit during the pandemic and be sure I did everything I could during a really difficult and scary time. I also did it to help protect our NHS, with scrubs they so desperately needed, and the public to keep them safe when doing their essential shopping or going to work to help prevent the spread as much as possible. Making reusable masks is also incredibly important to prevent any more waste polluting our planet and protect the ocean from the sheer volume of disposable masks that are now littering the land or choking our sea life.

Do you work or help with other charities?

My main charity is the PSP Association, who provide help and support to those with the rare and incurable brain diseases Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, or Cortico-Basal Degeneration (CBD). My Grandad, Poppa, had PSP for 6 years and passed away far too soon in 2008 from something we had never heard about. I've been fundraising for them since my very first Tough Mudder in 2014 and have taken on a huge number of other challenges since then, including cycling 400km across Vietnam and Cambodia and 360km across Burma, as well as multiple Tough Mudders, organising Quiz Nights, Raffles, 12-hour Charity Poleathons and a Cabaret Show. I've also previously raised money for the Marine Conservation Society through MMUK, Project Aware for Ms Scuba UK, and The British Heart Foundation.

What was the International final of Miss Mermaid like?

We were in Egypt for two weeks and we started off super busy with the creative judging on day one, the distance swim on day two, where I swam the furthest of all contestants at 110 metres. We had a day at a water park and a Desert Safari trip, which were amazing experiences, outside of the hotel. One evening, we spent about an hour or so in our mermaid tails around the restaurant, in the archways, on bench tops and chairs, for the hotel guests to vote for their favourite. It was nice to talk to some of the guests that had been watching us from the poolside and supporting us through the final. Our underwater photoshoot in the Red Sea got cancelled twice, unfortunately, due to the high winds. It was utterly devastating for us to not have that experience and we had to head into the shallow pool for that round instead. Thankfully I still scored maximum points and with my previous distance swim, I was in the top six for Best in Water.

Halfway through our time there, we put on a talent show for any of the girls who wanted to perform. With my fellow UK Girls (Wales, Scotland and Ireland too) we put together and choreographed a routine in just a few hours, over 3 days, when we had some free time. I also made us all a white chiffon skirt to put over leotards we had all chosen individually, and black chiffon and lace wrap around skirts.

With one of the girls singing live, we performed a very emotive routine to Jess Glynn's ‘Thursday’, conveying an important message of solidarity to embrace our individuality. Our rehearsal run throughs always had something go wrong, even during the dress run the day before my white skirt came off when I removed my black dress, and I was running around stage in just a leotard! It all happened so perfectly and beautifully on the night though. We made it to the end, and we unveiled the Union Jack from the back of my leotard for our big finish. We were so thrilled!! We then made it to the top five as scored by the judges and it was down to our audience to cheer for their favourite. With Wales and Scotland cheering the crowd on, myself and Ireland dropped into the splits centre stage and the crowd went wild. We couldn't have done anymore! And we won!! It was so emotional, after the weeks of planning choreography, playing with ideas, listening to the song on repeat, and creating costumes, as a team we put together a stunning piece, and we brought the talent sash home to the UK… FINALLY!! The hotel we were staying in had an amazing amphitheatre at the back of the hotel where their entertainment shows took place. A red carpet walk-around catwalk was built there just for us, so we had a great opportunity to show off each round for longer. We opened with our National costume and it was just incredible. We walked down from the very top of the amphitheatre towards the stage, so it was an incredibly grand entrance and very atmospheric with the music too. Of course, walking down a few steps in heels at a competition is nerve wracking enough, but an entire amphitheatre flight of stairs was a whole other level.

My legs were shaking so much! We had some very quick changes into our evening gown; I even had a full change of shoes and jewellery then again for the bikini round, before another final rush back into the evening gown for the announcements. I was so grateful to my fellow UK girls as we all helped each other, and they were even buckling my shoes while I popped my change of earrings in! It was crazy!

We shared the stage with one other contestant, as otherwise we would have been there all night walking around! I was with of the two Miss Mermaid USA girls, one of whom is a professional model, so there was a huge amount of pressure that I put on myself to try and match her level of performance. She was so sweet and kind though and we both had a lot of fun!

What was it like when you handed over your crown to your successor? I know previous winners also add a piece to the crown before it’s handed over what did you add?

I added some Cherith and small Conch shells to the top of the crown to create a pointy top for some drama! It's sweet that we get to add something, although in a very short space of time it will no doubt be absolutely full and very heavy! I created a replica crown to keep on my shelf, so I always had something to remember that moment by. I had no time to think on handover night and it went by in such a rush.

I was busy backstage rounding up the girls and getting them in order with sashes between rounds! Running down corridors in platform heels is an artform for sure! We also performed our Miss Mermaid International talent winning routine, albeit on a MUCH smaller stage than previous... sorry girls, that was my bright idea! Handing over the MMUK crown is a bit of a handful! You've got a new sash to put on, the country crown to take off the poor girl, a new crown to put on, another bunch of flowers to present and I had a lot of tears to wipe off of her cheeks too! I had had the exact same reaction when I won a year before, and it gave me butterflies to see it happen to my successor. I was so thrilled for her.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

To believe in myself more. I have blue/green hair, piercings, tattoos and I'm average height. I've learnt that I CAN do it, I CAN be a pageant girl and I CAN be taken seriously as a contestant, no matter who I am or what I look like. I have learnt that I can walk the walk and talk the talk and my goodness, I LOVE being on that stage too!! it’s so much fun!!

What’s your pageant platform and why?

I am incredibly passionate about ocean conservation. From the very first moment fundraising for MMUK and the Marine Conservation Society my journey has led me to Project Aware and Sea Sheppard UK, to help save the oceans that are suffocating from human waste and pollution. I have intensified my campaigning and awareness work and working in Sea Life aquariums as a mermaid and seeing the amazing work the Sea Life Trust do, has just inspired me more; knowing their brothers and sisters are struggling in the depths out there. I've recently signed up to a Marine Biology diploma, something I have wanted to do since I was young, and I can't wait to learn even more to help further my knowledge and enhance my campaigning. Plus, I've started making eco-friendly and reusable face wipes for my small business on Etsy, to help inspire people to make small changes to a greener life.

I've got a list of new products to release throughout the year! If I can help become part of the change, we can all make a difference together.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

Be yourself - there's no point trying to be anyone else but you. The judges want to see your personality shine through, so go out there and be your sparkliest self.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Someone who takes their title and platform or charity work to the next level. Winning a title is one thing, but to be a Queen is a job. I'm inspired by all the Queens who you see continuing to do their amazing fundraising or campaigning work after winning, and using their title for great things, inspiring future hopefuls of the title to work hard towards their dream too.

No matter if you win your dream title or not, don't stop working hard and keep going once that final is over. Keep being amazing!

What’s your favourite pageant round?

My favourite from MMUK was our eco round, because it's a unique round for this pageant. It inspired me to be creative and use my skills for something I could completely throw myself into making. Seeing my vision come to life on stage, and having such a personal touch to it was truly the icing on the cake How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Take a deep breath, let all the tension out, smile, then glide out.......handy to be a free diver, my deep breaths are huge!

Interview with Mother and Daughter Pageant Duo Helen Adkin & Chloe-Rose Adkin

Can you both introduce yourselves?

Chloe-Rose Adkin: Miss Nottingham Galaxy - 20 years of age Helen Adkin: Mrs Nottingham Galaxy - 55 years of age Chloe, are you following in your mum’s footsteps or Helen, are you following in Chloe’s footsteps in relation to pageantry?

Chloe: I believe mum is following in my footsteps. She’s been there for me since I started my pageant journey in 2015, so now it’s my turn to be there for her and support her new journey into pageantry as a contestant rather than a pageant mum!

Helen: I am following in my daughter, Chloe-Rose’s, footsteps. I go with Chloe to all her events.

What made you both enter the galaxy pageant?

Chloe: After placing 1st Runner-Up last year it was obvious that I’d be returning back for more! I’ve found a system I truly love and I’m eager to become a Galaxy queen!

Helen: I have watched Chloe - I thought I might have a go! It’s great to be involved in the Galaxy Pageant system as it’s a very friendly group and the Christy Charity is a great charity to be involved with.

Can you tell us about your pageant journeys?

Chloe: I started my pageant journey in 2015 at a local competition, Miss Mansfield Outstanding Teen, and I caught the infamous pageant bug! I’ve not stopped since! I’ve competed in Miss England where I placed Top 20 and was awarded Top 15 in their side awards for Miss Beach Beauty, Miss Beautiful Hair and Miss Top Model! I’ve been competing in Galaxy UK since 2019.

Helen: I have never competed before. This is my first time, so I am quite nervous, but excited too.

Having followed Chloe’s journey in the pageant world, it’s a great opportunity to help others and meet new friends and show it’s not all about a pretty face, but more about confidence, whilst still enjoying helping others.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you both?

Chloe: Be yourself! We’re all unique and bring so many different qualities to the crown. Allow the judges to see the real you, you’re more than capable!

What are your pageant platforms and why?

Chloe: I founded my platform Heart Awareness in early 2020. My aim is to educate people to understand the importance of heart health and how lifestyle choices can affect your heart and its likelihood of causing damage. This February, I’ve started a challenge to complete a 30-minute workout every day to #PutYourHeartFirst in aid or the British Heart Foundation! Each participant has to donate £4 to my JustGiving page in order to participate in the challenge, therefore, we’re creating a healthier lifestyle for ourselves whilst raising funds for those in need!

Helen: My Platform is The Christy, as this is the charity of Galaxy UK. However, I am at present helping with Run for your Mind to help the Samaritans and, next month, #PutYourHeartFirst with a weekly exercise programme, raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

Have you both been helping each other with appearances, outfits and accessories?

Chloe: We’re definitely supporting each other with all aspects of the competition! We’ve been sending each other wardrobe ideas and complete appearances together; it’s so much fun!

Helen: I love to help Chloe choose outfits. I love all the rounds; however, I have not picked out any outfits for myself yet, as I will wait for a while so I can actually go out and try them on. Chloe has shown me some outfits she thinks will suit me and I am happy for her to give advice.

What are your dream titles?

Chloe: My dream title would have to be Miss Galaxy UK/Miss Galaxy International! I’d be honoured to represent Holly and the UK at Miss Galaxy International and then bring the crown home!

Helen: Everyone wants to win, but taking part is important to me right now – how lovely though to be Mrs Galaxy UK. If you were to win, what would it mean to you both?

Chloe: To win would be a dream come true! I’ve poured my heart and soul into the competition for the last two years. If you look back at the 2020 competition pictures and videos, you can see in my facial expressions and body language; how much it all meant to me and that was placing 1st Runner-Up! Helen: I would be so thrilled and honoured obviously. If we both win the titles, how amazing is that?! I am not sure a mother and daughter as ever won before – it will obviously be a great opportunity and exciting to share the experience with my daughter.

How would it feel if you both got the opportunity to travel Galaxy Internationals together?

Chloe: What a fabulous experience that would be! It would be amazing to experience Internationals together and we talk about it often. However, even if just one of us wins, the other will be there in the audience cheering!

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

Chloe: Get stuck in with appearances and be an active finalist/queen! It’s a great way to meet fellow pageant girls and it gives you lots to talk about in your interview!

Helen: I am taking all advice at the moment, which is great for me. I can only advise to others to enjoy the journey and, as long as you enjoy yourself and you can smile, then that’s the best achievement.

What have you both been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

Chloe: Due to the current climate, we’ve had to complete more online appearances, such as campaigns and online events. We miss travelling up and down the country to events, but we know the best thing to do now is stay safe and be active online!

Helen: At present, during lockdown, I am getting involved with lots of online challenges like Bingo nights and fitness challenges and I have my own events planned. Hopefully though, when we are out of lockdown, I will be very busy in my community and attending events. I am so looking forward to this!

Although, I have not worn my sash on many occasions just yet – only whilst taking part when online events and my announcement of entering the Galaxy system on TikTok, which was fun to do.

Do you both have a favourite ever appearance?

Chloe: My favourite appearance has to be from 2019, when I hosted my own charity ball – The Glitter Ball! It was such an amazing event, which took months of planning, but with the help and support of local business it happened.

How has the lockdown, due to Covid-19, affected your pageant journey?

Chloe: - I wish we could be out and about travelling all over the UK attending events, however it’s important that we stay safe and protect ourselves and others from Covid-19. Due to it being Mum’s first pageant, I wanted us to be able to attend physical events but, unfortunately, it’s just not possible right now. But hopefully, if we all follow the guidelines, we’ll be able to get back to doing what we love soon!

Helen: At the moment due to Covid-19, which is making its mark on a lot of events in all areas. I am confident, later in the year, we will all be getting together and attending lots of events and I will be working hard to achieve the best I can before the final, helping raise money for charity.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Chloe: Someone who is kind, caring and welcoming! It’s important to me that I’m that smile you see in a crowded room, someone that you feel you can walk up to and start a conversation with! It’s also important that you’re active and passionate about the work you’re doing within the pageant community and beyond!

Helen: A good Pageant Role Model is to work hard be courteous and show you care!

What’s your favourite pageant round?

Chloe: Fashion Wear. It’s a round I feel most confident in whenever I’m on stage! You can have fun with this round and get really creative with your outfit. I love using shows such as Strictly Come Dancing for outfit inspiration!

Helen: Fashion wear looks the most fun and you can show your sass! But we will see after the final!

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Chloe: Just before I step on stage, I like to take a deep breath and think about how much work I’ve put in and remind myself that now is the time to just enjoy myself, as the night flies by, and I’ve been building up to this moment for a whole year!

Helen: I get excitedly nervous watching the final, so I don’t think it will be any different when I am on that stage. Although hopefully my mind will be too busy hoping not to trip!!

What made you enter pageants?

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I was already volunteering and raising donations for various charities/causes and I wanted to meet people who cared as much as I do. I also wanted to challenge myself.

I already knew the directors; they were looking for contestants. I read all the information about the pageants and I felt I just had to join - the temptation was calling me.

Can you tell us about your pageant journey so far?

What was the best thing that pageants have taught you?

I have been doing pageants for a long time. I won Miss Worldwide twice, along with quite a few charity awards. I couldn’t imagine life without pageants now. I really enjoy pushing myself for the benefit of others. Pageants are so much fun.

I was really shy about going on stage; that was a challenge to me, but I soon found out that I wasn’t the only one. I think if you can learn how to work with the nerves it can make you a stronger and better person.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My main pageant platform is the Samaritans. I think it is a very worthy charity. They help so many people when they are in need. I also support Brain Tumour Research, Born Free Foundation and Hands on Africa.

What’s your dream title?

For me, it isn’t just about the title it is about all the work you do before you even step a foot on the stage. There are many ways to do this, for for example supporting causes, raising donations for charities and volunteering. To be an advocate and support what matters to you.

What was it like when you won?

It is amazing to win any pageant or award, but it is another challenge in itself as you are a face or ambassador for the pageant system and world. Sometimes people don’t fully understand pageants and there are a lot of people shaming what they think we do, without fully understanding. This is an opportunity to prove them wrong and work hard for needy causes. It isn’t just about modelling; you need to shine for others.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens?

Never give up. If you work hard and feel like you have achieved your best, you can’t do any better than that. Sometimes we don’t win; perhaps it is the wrong time or perhaps you are new and don’t understand everything you need to know yet. Don’t let this put you off, as the competition is hard, sometimes with many people in your category. Focus on the things you can achieve; this might be advocacy, supporting campaigns, helping in your local community and raising awareness for your platform. Also remember to start small. There are many smaller charity pageants that need contestants.

What have you been doing since you won?

For me it has been brutal because I have been going through surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy for an incurable brain tumour. However, I won’t ever let anything get me down. Having a brain tumour helps you to focus on charities that may not have even been thought about before. One example is Brain Tumour Research. Before suffering from my health difficulties, I wouldn’t have seen the true significance and extent of what they are doing to help others. Also, my pageant’s chosen platform is Samaritans, and this is another reason why I applied. This is a charity that has helped my friends going through such hard difficulties and they actually save lives!

I have been doing a lot of fundraising, volunteering, mentoring and campaigning. I have been asked to take part in interviews in magazines and for radio channels/podcasts. I have also supported other pageant queens and contestants by entering their fundraising competitions and campaigns. I believe that I am seen to be a good role model and I try to do everything I can to deserve my titles.

Favourite ever appearance?

This is a very difficult question because I have done so many appearances over the years. I think the bravest thing that I have done is had my hair shaved off twice for charity and the most beautiful thing that I have done is taking part in photoshoots and catwalks. One of the most meaningful appearances was visiting orphanages with children books, colouring pencils and lots of other items that will help them with their education. I have fundraised for a lot of orphanages abroad. I couldn’t possibly choose just one as I have enjoyed them all. God willing, I hope to go back into orphanages and help more. I have children who I sponsor, so it will be really emotional and special to go and visit them.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

Well, currently, I have to isolate because of chemotherapy, so it doesn’t affect me with work, like so many others. However, I do notice a big difference. Before Covid-19, I was having radiotherapy so I had to go in every day, and I would see so many doctors and nurses. Now the only time that I can go in is for blood tests, just before every chemotherapy round and then instead of seeing my doctor I have a telephone consultation to see if I am well enough for my next round. Regarding my recent pageant journey, it has all been online or via phone. To be honest there is a lot you can do virtually these days, but I do miss being at the orphanages.

Has your reign been extended due to COVID19?

Yes. I was Ms. Goa two years in a row, and it was really nice to have the extra time to do more with my title.

What makes a good pageant role model?

You have to promote your title in a good way. You have to be an inspiration, to show others what you can do and hopefully they will take your lead. You need to be a good listener and mentor and be open to offer help. A good role model is a great leader, and the best leaders aren’t scared to get their hands dirty with the grass roots approach.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

I love the culture round. This isn’t in all pageants, but it is something that I really appreciate. I am proud to have English and Indian heritage. I believe it is important to educate yourself and others in order to fully understand people and what they might be going through.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I do suffer with nerves, quite a bit actually. What I have found with nerves is that they can be used as a good thing or a bad thing.

For example, pageants and catwalks produce an exciting, nervous reaction. Whereas having surgery, nerves are due to being worried and unsure. So, the nervous feelings are different for different things. Regarding pageants, excitement gives me that extra energy to overcome hurdles, for example with interviews or stage work. It makes my brain work harder and therefore I can give a quicker response. In some rounds, you have to walk quite quickly and having health issues this is very difficult for me, but with nervous energy it adds a little punch to my walk.

Over the last 10 years, I've been making more and more effort to care about what I consume. From improving my recycling, to upcycling my furniture instead of buying new. Over the last few years, there's been a lot more media and social media awareness around the impact our lives are having on the environment, but sadly we still have a very long way to go. Early in lockdown one, it became very clear to me that my priorities for my pageant platform had shifted and that I wanted to focus more on a hashtag concept I had been regularly using. #carewhatyouconsume had cropped up a lot in my social media, as it spoke so much about the value that I place on what I mentally and physically consume and how it affects me mentally and physically as well as the planet in general.

My platform, Care What You Consume (which now has Instagram and Facebook pages and a Facebook group), isn't just about the wider environmental issues, but also those closer to home that live within ourselves. Like all platforms, I'm sure it will develop and grow over time, but one of the things that I really want to do was host an awareness month. I teamed up with Miss Eco UK 2020, Charlotte Sophie Brooke, and Miss Earth UK 2020, Ella Baker Roberts, and Care What You Consume month was born.

This February is our first one and we are all very excited. Every day, we will be sharing tips and ‘Did You Knows?’ on our social media platforms. We will be hosting live videos at 8pm every Friday in February, where we will be discussing issues and solutions around certain topics that have strong links to pageantry: fashion, food, cosmetics and events and appearances. Our hope is that these videos will educate on the issues and inspire changes that we are all able to make. We've spent a lot of time planning and researching for them and hope you will join us live to ask questions and share your thoughts.

We also have two other special parts to Care What You Consume month 2021. Firstly, we are hosting PLEDGE TO YOUR PLANET; asking everyone to pledge just an hour of their time to litter pick in their local area on 14th February. Not only is this great for our planet, but it is also a fun appearance that can bring the international pageant community together for something positive. Last, but by no means least, we are running a competition called SLOW FASHION STYLIST. We have prizes of digital gift cards for LUSH UK for the winner of each age category. All you have to do is create an outfit using second-hand, recycled or upcycled clothing and accessories. You can submit your outfit from the 1st February to the 26th February and the winners will be selected by a secret judging panel with the winner announced on the 28th February. The pageant industry as a whole isn't known for being environmentally friendly and we really need to do better. A lot of us care very much, but it's not been seen as something we can talk about, because it often feels like we are pointing fingers and blame. We all need to be a part of the solution and, as an industry, make some big changes and fast. This starts with more of us speaking up about how important environmental issues are to us. With so many events on hold, now is the perfect time for contestants, Queens, systems and suppliers to all reconsider how we are doing things and how can we be more environmentally friendly. Everything we do has an impact and sticking our heads in the sand is no longer an option. Unfortunately, a lot of industries linked to or promoted by the pageant industry are ones causing a lot of negative impact, such as fast fashion. But this also means that, as an industry, we have the ability to make a massive positive impact if we make changes.

As an industry, we clearly do care and a great example of this for me was when Miss Eco launched a national final here in the UK. While other systems see a drop in numbers, this environment-based pageant has announced a really good number of finalists and the list keeps growing. Clearly, having a passion for pageants and the environment can go hand in hand. But we need to do more.
