Hello readers and welcome to Issue 6!

So, we have been very busy since we released Issue 5! We have been interviewing all of you amazing queens, both for the magazine and on film. We also did a special awareness feature for Volunteers Week, which was on the blog and on our social media. It seems that pageant land is getting back to normal, as we have had some amazing women crowned at Natural Beauty and Pure UK, my finals are also getting closer and if you follow my pageant account you will see that I am doing a 100 Day Countdown, where each day I highlight a different type of cancer. We have also raised over £1300 for the Samaritans, so thank you all again for the support!!

It’s amazing that we’ve made it this far and still have enough content each month to fill 8,000 magazines! The support the pageant community have given us, since we started this little mag, is simply mind-blowing and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this amazing group of generous and inspirational women!

Social Media Queen: Faith Gould – UK’s National Junior Miss Staffordshire

Hi everyone, we have another amazing issue in store for you all this month. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our readers for your continued support.

It has been a very busy month for me as, writing this, it is only 35 days until the finals of UK's National MIss. I have been very busy training with the incredible Harriotte Lane - The Crown Coach (@thecrowncoach). Our 1:1 face to face training was incredible - working together, preparing my routines and lots of online coaching sessions. I am very excited to meet everyone and enjoy making lots of memories.

Also, this month, I enjoyed a road trip to Taunton in Somerset for a very special reason. As many of you know, I was lucky enough to win Pageant’s Got Talent and the opportunity to be featured on the new charity single for the Christie Charity. I loved meeting Dionne John - Mrs Somerset Galaxy, her husband Adam and their beautiful daughter Keira John - Little Miss Atlantic 2021/22. We had an amazing time recording the new single which we are all so excited to share with you soon.

Pageant Agony Aunt: Sarah Lane UK’s National Classic Newcastle

It’s such an exciting time as pageants start to go live again. I can’t wait to be reunited with my pageant family.

As many of you know, I’m the mother of Harriotte Lane and, for 9 years, I’ve always been on the other side of the sash, carrying the crown case and being taxi to events. This year sees the tables turned and I’m competing in UK’s National Miss in the Classic division.

I’ve been so far outside my comfort zone with this. It has been amazing and I have felt like I have made my own achievements to be proud of. Just this month I have raised £280 with a charity Zoom class and I’m so proud to say my work has matched the money! So that’s £560 for The Christie!!

My fun facts are: I’m 48 and this is my first ever pageant I have two amazing children that make me very proud I’ve been married for 26 years I haven’t walked in heels for over 10 years… until now I’ve driven Harriotte to over 600 appearances

Hello everyone! we have another amazing issue instore for you. Thank you so much for your support While being UK's National Teen Rotherham, I have been working hard promoting my platform - mental health awareness and education. This month I have completed the NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certification in Understanding Children and Young People's Mental Health. Now I have achieved this, I am moving on to the Level 2 course in Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace. I also help educate and raise awareness around mental health on my Instagram - @princess_perspective. As well as this, throughout the month I have been raising much needed funds for Marie Curie, using collection boxes in my local area.

Hi everyone! I hope you are all enjoying life starting to get back to normal and starting to get out and about.

Mrs Atlantic has been a busy queen the last few weeks! I have had the pleasure of being a judge for three different online charity pageants, which was incredible - I loved every minute of it! It was lovely to see so many beautiful contestants, from babies up to classic categories, with lots of money raised for different charities. Not only was I a judge for online pageants, but I was asked to judge an online dance competition, which I was over the moon about as it took me back to when I used to perform. Gosh, I wish I was still able to move like that - I’d pull a few muscles at my age now! I have also taken part in some inspiring and lovely campaigns, such as Pride Month and Say No to New to name but a few. Feel free to pop on my Instagram to keep an eye on what I’m up to. I am really enjoying being interviewed as a newly crowned queen and telling everyone how I even got started into pageantry. But Mrs Atlantic is still loving interviewing everyone, hearing their stories and having a giggle over funny pageant stories. The newly crowned Atlantic Queens get to meet for the first time in July! We are all so excited! not only do we meet, but we are having our Charlotte Clemie shoot! Keep an eye out for the photos.

Interview with Miss Intercontinental U.K. – Romy Simpkins

Firstly, a huge congratulations on winning Miss Intercontinental UK! What made you decide in Miss Intercontinental UK? I decided to compete for the title of Miss Intercontinental UK as everything from the ethos, ‘Dare to Dream’, to the chosen charity (Women’s Aid) and the international pageant itself appealed to me and I felt inclined, with me as a pageant girl. Since 2018 I had wanted to compete in this system and I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to take part and blessed to have won!

Now let’s go back to how you planned for the final as it was virtual. Did you prepare in a different way than a live pageant?

I wouldn’t say I prepared too differently. I have always been active with my fundraising, campaign work and appearances. However, with the pandemic, it was more limited to what you can do around other people. But, the power of social media is incredible and I was still able to launch three of my own campaigns online, host my own charity event and train to be an ambassador for Women’s Aid. Hopefully, we won’t be having anymore virtual pageants due to lockdown restrictions lifting, but for those that are competing virtually do you have any tips?

I think it’s so important as a pageant girl and a potential UK winner to have a strong presence on social media.

People want to see you being active, showing why you deserve the title and what makes you a standout. I would say work on how you want to be represented online, as through the pandemic, and as the years go on, technology is going to become more advanced and I think this is where we can fully utilise it to make a positive impact. Also, I would say having a coach on hand is incredibly insightful and I also use a pageant planner from The Pageant Planner Co. to help me stay organised and on top of things!

Did you feel more under pressure with it been a virtual pageant than a live?

I am going to be honest, yes, I did! I think, when it comes to a live final, to see the work come to life on that day during your interview and showing yourself on stage is hard. When doing virtual, I feel you have to show yourself even more in the lead up to the virtual competition. I wanted to prove I’m worthy of this title and, with that in mind, it all had to be shown online. I think this is what makes the virtual exciting, challenging and rewarding to be a part of and come away with a title from. It’s similar to an International from the moment you hit the ground of that country you’re competing in you’re already being watched.

What do you have planned during your reign?

During my reign, my focus is to work on my own take on the ‘Power of Beauty’ ethos of Miss Intercontinental.

I believe beauty comes from within and for me being beautiful is giving back, taking notice and being a voice for others by campaigning for equality between men and women and breaking down the taboo subject of coercive control and narcissistic behaviour. I hope to bring more awareness about this type of abuse, whilst promoting better mental health and empowering women to speak out. I would like to continue working on my #theredflags campaign throughout my year of reign.

How are you going to plan for internationals?

Apart from my campaign work, a lot of planning is involved in how I present myself at Internationals. So styling is really important, from knowing what colours and types of outfits suit my physique, to how I’m going to have my hair every day. I am looking to get my gown (or two) made from an International designer, as well as my national costume, which I want to be a statement, but also unique.

What are you most looking forward to at Internationals?

I will always say being able to meet the other contestants is what I’m most looking forward too. However, I get such a buzz when I’m on the stage and the fact I’m going to be on the international one is something I’m going to love every minute of being a part of.

This year you are the only UK representative going to the international pageant as normally there are three women from the UK. Do you feel more under pressure because of this?

It is indeed just myself this year, but I’m so fortunate that my incredible director is going to fly out and support me during my international experience. It’s great to have that moral support whilst out there. I’m not sure if I feel pressure. I actually feel even prouder to represent the whole of the UK and I hope I do everyone justice. I hope to do the best I can do whilst loving every moment of it! I do have big heels to fill from Georgia - Molly and Catriona!

You’re no stranger to pageants and have also competed internationally before. What do you love most about pageantry?

Aha, I once got called a Pageant Veteran which always make me chuckle. But, I love the fact I can be myself; I don’t have to put on an act to anyone in the pageant world. I believe, whether at a national or international level, it is about being the best version of yourself and this has always been my drive to push forward, chase my dreams and not give up. So far, this is a way of thinking that has got me to places I never thought I’d end up. I truly feel pageants have helped shaped me into the woman I’ve always wanted to be.

Title, name?

Maurah Ruiz, Miss Global USA 2021 What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I always loved performing and all things beauty. I really wanted a platform to showcase fitness, beauty, and interview skills, among other things. I found that, with pageants, I was able to grow as a person. As I started to compete more, I fell in love with the women, staff and volunteers of the different pageant organisations I have been with, and felt passionate about serving my community. Pageants to me are ‘Beauty with a Purpose’.

I started with the Miss America organisation in Texas. This really solidified my knowledge of pageants and refined my interview skills. I also made many amazing friends. I continued on to try the Miss Universe system, locally and at state level. It was a great experience, and I, again, met so many amazing women but I wasn't sure I had found my home just yet. I then competed in the Miss Global organisation and found my home in the pageant community. I think our system is unique in that it is large internationally, but really focuses on their title holder. I am looking forward to representing the USA at Miss Global 2021 in Bali, Indonesia in September.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

Our system believes in embodying the beauty within, embracing cultures and empowering women. This is everything I stand for personally, so it was a great fit. It also has an amazing prize package and caters to women who are models. Our winner gets a cover on Harper's Bazaar along with various other fashion magazines. As a professional model, this would be great for my portfolio as well as for building my personal brand. As a title holder, I would get to travel the world promoting our mission of empowering women. This mission speaks to my soul, as I believe in organisations who support women and children.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

Growth lies just beyond your next challenge. Competing in pageants is incredibly tough and takes a lot of dedication. You can't help but grow and learn about yourself as a person through the process.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

I am on the board of directors for an organization called More Than Colors. It was incubated at Harvard and is slowly growing. We address sustainability and underserved communities. We take unwanted makeup and upcycle it into paint. That paint is then donated to underserved children to support art education and therapy. In my life, creativity has always been a huge cornerstone. I wanted to help other children find their inner Picasso. www.morethancolors.org What’s your dream title?

Miss Global 2021 If you were to win what would it mean to you?

Winning would not only be the realisation of a dream that I have been manifesting for a while now, but it would mean a lot to my community too. I have started at the bottom - with no training, knowledge of the industry and with very little support. It has taken me years to achieve the success I have. Winning would be a beautiful ending to years of dedication to pageantry. It would also mean that my platform, More Than Colors, along with the other charitable organisations I support, would have a global audience.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Find your voice and then find your system. It is very important to participate in a system that will celebrate who you are.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

My year has been filled with lots of travel, events, and charitable contributions. It has been a fantastic year. Most of what I have done has been virtual since I was a ‘Quarantine Queen’, but we made the best of it and accomplished a lot.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

I loved judging the Miss Senior World pageant. It is a pageant that celebrates woman in their 50s, 60s, and 70s.

How has the lockdown, due to Covid-19, affected your pageant journey?

I was Miss Global USA 2020/2021, with the longest reign in Miss Global USA history. It has been an honour to serve my country for so long.

What makes a good pageant role model?

I consider myself to be positive, upbeat, and dedicated. I am also sociable and a self-starter. These are things I believe make a good pageant role model.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

I love swimsuit. Fitness is very important to me, so showcasing all of my hard work is exhilarating and fulfilling.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I do extensive mental prep work, with my interview coach, leading up to my competitions. I find it important to be in a good mental state before entering a competition.

Title, name & age?

Miss Lincolnshire GB 2021 Chloe Ashford-Smith 26 What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I have always loved the film Miss Congeniality. This is my very first memory of a pageant, as I never knew anyone who had competed in one. To be completely honest, one day I decided I was going to make a bucket list of things I wanted to do in my life and decided to put 'enter a pageant' on there! I never once thought I could win a title. But three pageants later here I am as Miss Lincolnshire!

Have you competed before? If so, can you tell us about your journey?

I have previously competed in Miss England and won two awards in my locals towns heat, Miss Eco and Miss Publicity.

Miss Eco was a round involving using recycled materials to make a dress to wear on stage. Miss Publicity was a round based on how much media coverage a contestant gained during the competition.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

After the awful year we've had, I thought I'd do something positive and give myself something to focus on... so I applied for Miss Great Britain! Plus, I love competing. The experiences you get to have and all the friends you make along the way is amazing.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

To be yourself and that no matter how you look on the outside, it really doesn't matter.

What matters is the person you are in your heart and how you treat people.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

I have suffered with Alopecia since I was a baby, and lost 80% of my hair when I was 17. I was bullied during school. I lost my eyebrows, eyelashes and still lose patches of hair every few months. I am actually in the midst of setting up a Lincolnshire Alopecia support group, as I noticed from my own experience there was support lacking in my area for people going through the same situation as me. I do pageants to show other girls, or boys, like me that it doesn't matter what your physical appearance is, whether it be hair loss, scars or anything else for that matter. You can do anything you set your mind to.

Once you start believing in yourself magical things really do start to happen in your life.

What’s your dream title?

Miss Great Britain 2021!

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

I know it's cliché, but it would mean absolutely everything to me. I am working so, so hard - working my full time six day-a-week job, competing in a pageant, fundraising, alongside running a house and working on a farm! I wouldn't change it for the world but, if I was to win, it would sure make everything worth it and would show everyone you can do whatever you put your mind to!

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Be yourself, have courage and be kind.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

I have been doing a lot of fundraising! This year, I have really thrown myself into charity work. I have only had my title for just over a month, but I have already quadrupled my past fundraising amounts! I have been doing online auctions, car boot sales, bake sales, name cards and raffles. Now the world is opening up again, I also have a few appearances booked in for example, the week before the Grand Final, I am taking part in Race for Life Pretty Muddy in Lincoln.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

Definitely the charity round! I also think it is the most important round. It shows that pageants aren’t just about being on stage in a pretty gown and how you look.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Breathe, smile and have fun!

Title, name & age?

I am Vivienne Radfar, Miss Classic Diamond Buckinghamshire and this year I celebrated my 60th birthday.

What made you enter pageants in the first place?

At the age of 54, I felt I had lost my mojo. Even dance didn't bring me joy anymore. I was also aware that my beloved mother was getting older and more frail. I saw an advert for Miss Over 50 and Fabulous and decided I would like to enter. It was something that I could take my mum to, a way of creating precious memories with her and something we could both ‘glam up’ for. My mum was always glamorous, loved her jewellery and even though she wasn’t in the best health and had numerous hospital visits (which I always accompanied her to) she had the most beautiful smile on her face no matter what, as well as a fast wit and wicked sense of humour. She managed to accompany me to several pageants, including my first and only attempt at Mrs Galaxy in 2016, Mrs Crown and Glory World and Miss Worldwide. I have the most wonderful memories of our journeys together in the car and our times there. Even though I may not have won those pageants, my precious memories of time spent with her and the fun we had are my crown jewels forever.

Have you competed before?

I have been lucky enough to win Miss Over 50 and Fabulous, Mrs Crown and Glory World, Ms Classic British Empire and Pure Classy Ms United Kingdom. I have had a wonderful time. I can truly say that I caught the pageant bug and plan to carry on as long as I can. For me, age is just a number, it doesn't define me and never will. Getting older is not something to be feared - we have to be glad every day we are alive. My mother taught me that.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I'm currently competing in Miss Diamond UK. I chose this system because the directors, Danni and Tina, are amazingly supportive to all of their contestants. We truly are a family and I'm so happy that I decided to join. I would also obviously love to win the title of Miss Classic Diamond UK and win a trip to Las Vegas...who wouldn't! lol...

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

The best thing I've learned is not to compete with anyone else, only myself. My mother always used to say comparisons are odious anyway. In everything I do, I aim to do my best, to aspire to be the best version of me always and to never give in. I am very determined and whether that is translated into my getting a first-class law degree as a mature student, or appearing on Mastermind after three years of trying, I will always find a way.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My Pageant Platform is Alzheimer's Research and Alzheimer's Society. Unfortunately, over the last four years, my wonderful witty and funny mother, who was always telling the most amazing stories of her childhood and early life, succumbed to this awful disease. From someone who read avidly and was always writing letters, she lost the ability of doing even these simple things but, to her, they were a massive part of her life. I'm thankful though that, as her carer throughout Covid, I was able to see her at least twice a day. We said we loved each other many times a day and she always knew me. I'm very very thankful for that. I've organised two charity calendars for Alzheimer's which have raised over £2000. I am now planning the next one for 2022, which is "Pageant Girls Do Bond"..... Watch this space!!

What’s your dream title?

Of course, my dream title would be Miss Classic Diamond UK and then Miss Classic Regency International.

If you were to win, what would it mean to you?

My goodness, it would be the world to me if I won! At 60 years old, I am the oldest in the Classic Division and I would love to prove that age is no barrier to achieving your dreams. If I were to win, I would wear the Crown and Sash proudly in memory of my mother, who passed away in January this year, and work hard to inspire and empower all women to believe in themselves.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Always be the best version of you. You are unique - that is your power. Plan and prepare so nothing is left to chance. Have a Plan B for everything! One thing I always do is take at least two of each outfit so that should anything happen I have a backup. Finally, stand proud on stage, be confident in interview and whatever happens you will be a winner.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

Like many others, Covid has prevented live appearances, which is what I would normally be doing to prepare for my pageant final. I love travelling to support and appear at other pageants, at charity events and functions. As I have been unable to do this, I have been doing virtual appearances as well as personally preparing myself for the finals - planning and choosing outfits, practising my walks and preparing for interview. I've also been looking after my new little fur baby Maisie - who joined our family on Good Friday and is bringing us much love and joy.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

My favourite ever appearance was at Miss Diamond 2019, and a first taste of how fabulous this pageant system really is.

What makes a good pageant role model?

I believe that a good pageant role model is someone who can inspire, empower and enable others to believe in themselves. Someone who will be hard working for their pageant system and directors, eloquent, creative and who will always act in a classy way, never putting herself or her pageant in a bad light.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

Oh wow - absolutely evening wear round! I have always loved glamour. I think if I was born again and could choose an era it would definitely be 1930's or 1940's. They were the epitome of elegance when women always wore evening gowns to go out to the theatre or to dinner. I love the fact that pageants allow us to really be as glamorous as we want to be.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I try not to think about things too much, but deep breathing always helps and talking to the girl’s backstage can help relax you. To be honest, I think a little bit of nervousness actually can be good as it sharpens your mind and focuses your attention on what you need to do....

April Banbury - Ms Great Britain 20/21 (The first EVER), Miss Central London 2016, 1st runner up in Miss Great Britain twice (2014 & 2016).

April is also a Bridal designer, costume designer to Miss Universe GB, S.E.E.D eating and mental health awareness ambassador, AeroSparx ambassador and trainee pilot.

Soraya is a 33 years half Spanish half Colombian beauty that has been living in UK for 7 years now.

She was also our third cover star!

She is a new pageant girl coming from bodybuilding where she has won 2 World Titles! She will be competing at UK's National Miss in July with the hopes to be crowned the very first UK's National Ms Soraya has taken the pageant world by storm with her #swapyourtan campaign that encourages girls to stop using tanning beds and switch to a better and safer alternative, such as self-tanners.

Makeva Armant-Muhammad is an entrepreneur who has a passion for teaching and studying the French language and culture. She is passionate about using world languages to create access to global marketability for students in underserved communities.

Makeva has held 8 titles since 2011 and has competed both nationally and internationally, winning her first international title, Royal International Miss Role Model Ms 2019. She currently holds the title of Mrs. Maryland United World, and she recently won the 2021 East Coast Perfect Miss Model Search Competition.

We also would like to publicly introduce our official UK based Director, Madara Riley in Atlantic/North-West Europe.

Madara won our Plus Size category and after we watched her grow, we had no doubt that she could be perfect for this role.

But now about the pageant!!

Miss & Mrs. Top of the World is a luxurious, international beauty pageant, with contestants from all over the world.

We have following categories: • Miss & Mrs. Top of the World 2021 • Miss Teen Top of the World 2021 • Miss & Mrs. Top of the World Classic 2021 • Miss & Mrs. Top of the World Plus Size 2021 We welcome ladies of all shapes, sizes and age groups. You can represent your country/region or country/region of residence.

This year unfortunately we are not able to have finals in Brazil as planned, and last year our final in Suriname was cancelled because of COVID-19. Regardless of all of the hurdles, it made us stronger and we successfully accomplished the contest online.

So here’s what is happening. Your regional director will work with you to go over details, fees, vision and rules.

Once you’re through, your welcome pack will arrive and you are all set for country/regional finals. You will need three images: - National costume/dress (can be modern/self-made) - Black swimsuit/cocktail dress or all white costume (depending on category) - Ball gown You will also need two images in evening wear (full length and portraits), as well as a description you’re your introduction.

The finals will be for three nights, where you are expected to be present or send in videos with dress and make up/hair done.

First night it is talent show (can be sent in video). The second night it is your Country/Region with a presentation about your culture, country or region you represent (can be video). The third night is for speeches and awards, where your presence during LIVE stream is required. You can connect to the live stream from anywhere in the world!

Your national Director will go over everything with you and will help you with any advice and your preparations.

Interview with Miss Regal World 2020/21, Janice MacGregor

Title, name & age?

I am honoured to be your Miss Regal World 2020/21! My name is Janice MacGregor and as for my age… let’s just say that I am one less day from dying young!

What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I wish that my origin story was deep and meaningful, but when I competed in my first pageants (Miss Canada International 2007 and Miss World Canada 2008) it was an opportunity to get out of small-town Saskatchewan and meet girls from across Canada. In later years, for example, when I competed in International Ms. in August 2018 and Miss Regal World 2020/21, I used the pageants to further my platforms. I wish I had known about how pageants could advance one’s platforms back in 2007 and 2008, as that would have made my participation more meaningful.

Have you competed before? If so, can you tell us about your journey?

Miss Saskatoon International 2007, Miss Saskatchewan International 2007, Miss World Saskatchewan 2008, International Ms Canada 2018, and (currently) Miss Regal World 2020/21.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

Miss Regal World was a breath of fresh air. I appreciated that women were not placed in different categories based on whether they were married, divorced, or had children. It was also a great way to beat the COVID blues by meeting girls and women from around the world!

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

The most important thing I’ve learned over the past fourteen years is that just having a pageant title can advance one’s platform. As International Ms Canada 2018 I was able to make a difference in a civil rights situation in America and as Miss Regal World 20/21 I have been able to interact with the Guyana Consulate in Toronto and Guyanese-Canadian groups, both in my area and across Canada, to advance epilepsy awareness, COVID-19 vaccination awareness, and multiculturalism in Canada.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

I advocate for epilepsy awareness and acceptance, because I have epilepsy and see the need to eradicate the stigma and end discrimination against people who have the condition. I advocate for anti-racism and multiculturalism because I am a first generation Canadian of Guyanese heritage. I am 100 percent proud to be Canadian, yet I am still proud of my heritage. During this ‘pandemic pageant’, I included supporting local businesses as a part of my platform, since these businesses are being hit hard and need support from their communities.

What’s your dream title?

Ideally, no pageant would discriminate based on sexist ideas that women over a certain age or who are married/divorced, or who have a child are incapable of fulfilling the duties of a titleholder. In that hypothetical situation, my dream title would be Miss World. But, honestly, I’m so honoured to be the first ever Miss Regal World that my dream title is the one I currently hold!

What was it like when you won?)

What was it like when I won? [Laughter] When our director Victoria [George-Veale] announced the runners-up and the winner I thought that I was dreaming. I’m not using hyperbole! I literally thought I was dreaming. I had a late night the evening before so when I was watching the virtual announcement I thought I was still asleep. That was the best dream ever!

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Do not embellish your past accomplishments and do not promise to do anything you do not have a concrete plan for. The purpose of pageantry is to use your position to help others, so make sure you have a plan on how to do that if you win. If you don’t win be ready and willing to help whoever does win; we need to be ready and willing to step up and support our Queens.

What have you been doing since you won?

I represented Guyana in the pageant, so I have been in contact with the Guyana Consulate in Toronto and was even featured on their Instagram! They will hook me up with some epilepsy NGO's in Guyana that I can work with after the pandemic. I am a new ambassador for Angels of Epilepsy, a non-profit based in America. I’ve done multiple podcasts around the globe promoting my platforms and I’m now a part of an online campaign aimed at empowering youths to overcome the struggles they face.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

All of my appearances so far have been virtual, due to the COVID-19 restrictions on both travel and the number of people allowed to gather, but I love the one-on-one virtual conversations with girls and women around the world. I don’t have children of my own so being able to make an impact on their lives means a lot!

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey? Has your reign been extended due to Covid-19?

I never had a reason to be bored during lockdown, because I always had a ‘job’ to do as a Queen. It’s tricky to navigate due to lockdown restrictions, but I’m doing the best I can whilst following local and federal Covid guidelines.

What makes a good pageant role model?

As long as she’s not hurting anyone, another Queen’s personal life is none of my business. What DOES matter is that she treats her Director, her pageant system, her title and her pageant sisters with respect. I think that’s what makes a good pageant role model.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

I really enjoy interview! Who doesn’t enjoy talking about her platform and goals?

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

In terms of the on-stage part of pageantry, years of acting and runway modelling has desensitised me to stage fright. In terms of the rest of the pageant journey, from entry to pageant week to finals night, I just remember that not winning isn’t the end of the world and, even if I don’t win, I can still work hard to advance my platform. Ultimately, being a titleholder is a job and the pageant is the interview. If I don’t win, it’s nothing personal - it just means that I wasn’t the right candidate for the position THAT YEAR. Not winning isn’t the end of the journey.

EVERY PENNY COUNTS BY Constance Seddon – Miss Regal World Finalist

I am 58, married with three grown up children, three grandchildren and one big heart to love my family, my community, nature, my job and the world I live in. I am on a journey with Regal World directed by Victoria GeorgeVeale.

People are different and it is that difference which makes the world as interesting as it is. Those who enjoy doing daring stunts, like bungee jumping for instance, earn themselves a label of ‘daredevils’ or ‘adrenaline junkies’. I guess those like me who get the buzz from being in front of cameras, on stage, or in the spotlight would fall under the label of ‘attention seekers’. The key to humanism is to embrace and respect eachother’s interests and art, instead of describing each other using derogatory words. I think pageants bring out hidden talents, build confidence and self-esteem as the journey progresses, with tasks that each participant has to complete presenting themselves at their best. The process triggers ideas and helps one to appreciate oneself as they are and also create their own unique ‘beautiful’ in and out, satisfied, polished woman, who thinks of other people’s plight.

I have been fortunate enough to have a colourful life in two continents - the First and the Third world. One very hot and the other very cold. I am Zimbabwean by birth and a British citizen by naturalization, as I have spent half of my life in UK. Having been born to two school teachers, there was a lot of emphasis on academic achievement - no option of branching to music, sport, modelling, photography or acting as careers, that was out of the question at my house. I enjoyed my childhood and youth. I had all the basic needs but wasn’t spoilt. I totally appreciate and understand that success in anything comes with input of the individual concerned, but most of all from some support rendered by other people. In Zimbabwe, unlike in this country, there is nothing one can get for free from the state - no child benefits, no unemployment benefits, nothing subsidized by government. Education and medical services have to be paid for. I know first-hand girls that I grew up with and started school with who had to drop out of school to get married, not out of love, but facing no other option. Some families could not raise the money for basic requirements. I mean, in situations where they didn’t know where the next meal would come from, good neighbours and friends in the community stepped in to give a lift. The local community could only do so much, so for families where there was a shortage of school fees, the preference would be for the boy child to continue on the assumption that he would get an education and a job, then be able to look after his wife and family. That then meant the girl child’s fate was to find a man to marry so that she could be looked after. But, is it how it always worked out? What happened to those who could not find a man to marry? What happened to those who found

abusive husbands? What age were the men who could afford to marry them? Did they have any say in anything in that home? Could they be involved in any decision making?

Girls have brains too. They are endowed with beauty and can take responsibilities very well under difficult circumstances. They just need that support - a springboard to jump from that they can grab the opportunity and run. Educating a girl child is educating a whole community. It is in their nature to give back to their roots. In the rural areas in Zimbabwe, a lot of villages do not have running tap water, they have wells and, if lucky, get water from a borehole driven by an engine, which is not always reliable. Whenever I have a drink of clean cold water, I do think about some people who walk miles to fetch water and carry it on the head in heavy buckets. Some schools outside town are so far away from settlements children walk for miles in the heat, sometimes on empty stomachs, just to be able be taught how to read and write, praying for some good fortune to get help from somewhere to continue. The parents, who have no jobs themselves, work so hard on the land to grow crops for sale and fend for the children, but this is dependent on the rains coming on time. All the things we take for granted in urban areas in Zimbabwe and the UK can only be dreams for some people. I sometimes take so long to get ready because I can’t decide which outfit to wear. Some people take long because they are patching up their one outfit in order to make it wearable for the day. Having knowledge of both worlds first hand, and the different strata of society, makes me sensitive and responsive to charities which do their bit to alleviate other people’s suffering - every little helps.

I took up sponsoring a girl child through Plan International - an organisation that I trust and know and have seen the work that I witnessed while I was in Zimbabwe. I saw the girls who were elevated by the sponsorship programme and promised myself that I would do something for somebody when I have the means. I was fortunate enough to have a career for 34 years in the health sector. I did my best to fend for my own family as well as do my bit to support Water Aid, for boreholes in the third world, Shelter for the homeless in UK, World Wildlife Fund UK and Sponsoring a Girl Child. I set up the Helegwa Foundation in honour of my late parents. This serves to acquire the specialist stationary needed by a school for the blind, where they taught and supported financially. Most of the blind children are from disadvantaged backgrounds. There is a small charity called Jairos Jiri based in Zimbabwe, helping to raise funds and keep the special boarding school open. One set of stylus and guide for one child to be able to write braille costs an average of 20 pounds. They need special paper which has to be imported from South Africa or UK. They also have to be fed by the school administration.

I was a busy mother of three holding a full-time job, so my passion for modelling and acting was on the shelf for a long time. I had a lot photographs taken in my life and, whenever I could, I participated in little competitions on stage. After my flexi-retirement I have the time to do a bit more of what I have always wished to do. I have had photoshoots, done a few adverts, had supporting roles in a series to be aired soon, did a little bit in a documentary leading to the presentation of the BAFTA awards 2021, participated in World Monologue Games and am currently in the Regal World pageant. I am loving the experience and have already met some lovely, vibrant ladies of substance. I hope to come out a Queen in the Classic division and use my influence to complete some projects I am passionate about but, most importantly, get equipped with confidence, elevated self-esteem and prove that one can be beautiful inside, outside and also intelligent. I will also learn, in the process, using technology to make an impact and source ideas to raise funds for good causes - every penny counts, considering the exchange rate of the pound to the currencies used elsewhere. I proudly hold the two flags, Zimbabwe and UK - I spent half my life in each so far. I have had a colourful life and wish to continue to do so into my senior years.

BIO Soraya is a 33 years half Spanish - half Colombian beauty that has been living in UK for 7 years now.

She is a new pageant girl coming from bodybuilding where she has won 2 World Titles! She will be competing at UK's National Miss in July, with the hope of being crowned the very first UK's National Ms Soraya has taken the pageant world by storm with her #swapyourtan campaign, that encourages girls to stop using tanning beds and switch to a better and safer alternative, such as self-tanners.

May was Skin Cancer Awareness month and Soraya, UK's National Ms Cambridge, launched her #swapyourtan campaign, which has been proven to be very popular!

Soraya's platform is Cancer Awareness and she is raising money for Cancer Research. However, she wanted to do something that could involve more people to spread the word about something she is very passionate about….. Banning tanning beds.

In Spain, where she is from, tanning beds are banned (as they are in Australia), due to the super harmful effects it has on people's health.

My friend told me about pageants when I was 4 years old and I tried a small county fair pageant. Even though didn’t win,that I had so much fun!

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

My coach and friend had competed at Royal International Miss before and loved the system. She convinced me to compete at the Georgia state pageant and I won the Georgia Sweetheart title.

I love that this system includes young women from all over the world! I also love that they have a Role Model program, which encourages service in their delegates.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

I have learned confidence, speaking skills, stage presence, the importance of service and now I am learning how to run a small business.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is the ‘Gift of Joy’, which aims to bring joy to children experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. My biggest project is ‘Birthday Bags’, which provides birthdays for those children. I have delivered over 200 so far. I also provided almost 200 ‘Christmas Cheer’ bags to children last year. Additionally, I helped to provide Easter gifts for almost 200 children this spring.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title would have to be Miss Universe!

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

It would be amazing to win the largest pageant in the world! I would have so many opportunities to grow my platform and my business!

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

When you are on stage, think about the people you love and imagine they are right there with you. Remember that the judges are rooting for you. If you don’t win, remember that in God’s timing you will find the right crown for you.

What have you been doing since you won?

Since I won I have been working very hard on growing my platform and my business. During June and July, the Royal International Miss platform is ‘Birthday Bags’. All of the contestants are working on my project, which is amazing!

What is your favourite ever appearance?

I really enjoyed being a visiting queen at other pageants, both other systems and Royal International Miss state pageants.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

I have still had an amazing reign. Our directors, Sharon Nordquist and Jeff LeForce, have provided us with so many fun opportunities for travel, as well as gifts. The need for my ‘Birthday Bags’ was even greater in my community, due to job loss. I also found many different ways to volunteer from home when it was not possible to go in person.

Has your reign been extended due to Covid-19?

No, Royal International Miss has fortunately been able to continue their events on time.

What makes a good pageant role model?

I’m Rebekah Tasker (Becca Tasker), I am 29 years old and my current title is Mrs Hampshire Atlantic 2021/22 What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I entered pageants to help with building my self-confidence, gain friends, have a voice for topics that matter to me and I saw all the positives of pageantry.

Have you competed before? If so, can you tell us about your journey?

Mrs Hampshire Curve 2018, Mrs Hampshire Sovereign GB 2019/20 and Mrs Hampshire Atlantic 2020/21. I started my journey in 2018 when I applied for Miss British Beauty Curve, but I never made it to the stage. I then was scouted for Miss Sovereign GB in 2019 where I took to the pageant stage for the very first time.

Shortly after Sovereign finals, I started looking into the Atlantic beauty pageant and knew the system was for me, as I have a mental health platform which goes very well alongside Atlantic’s chosen charity, Mind.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I decided to compete in Miss Atlantic United Kingdom due to a number of factors – the chosen charity for Miss Atlantic UK is Mind which is something close to my heart, since I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder back in 2010. Romy, our amazing director, has been very welcoming and supportive. I adore her with all my heart and my pageant sisters are all amazing, unique and supportive.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

The best thing pageants have taught me is that no matter who you are you’re accepted. I have found it difficult to fit in with others throughout my life and to know I’m accepted has really boosted my self-esteem.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is my #NeverFeelAshamed campaign, which is based on mental health. As I have already said, I have a diagnosed mental health condition and my biggest passion is breaking the stigma that mental health carries.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title is Mrs Atlantic United Kingdom If you were to win what would it mean to you?

If I was to win its be a dream come true. It’d also prove to me that I am worth something and all my hard work has paid off. I’d carry the title proudly, courageously, and would treasure every moment of my reign.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Don’t be afraid to be yourself, hold you head up high and, no matter how difficult the lead up to finals may be, remember the reason you started your pageant journey in the first place.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

I have been working hard on #NeverFeelAshamed, as well as starting up two linked campaigns – The Lines Project, which is a combination of being a part of LBGTQIA+ community and mental health and #breakingthecycle, which is a combination of mental health, eating disorders and body dysmorphia.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

My all-time favourite is my online charity pageant Miss Courageous UK. How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

In all honesty it hasn’t really changed my pageant journey. The main thing I have wanted to do, but of course haven’t been able to, is join other girls cheering each other on at their pageant finals.

What makes a good pageant role model?

For me, I think a good pageant role model is someone who is passionate, has a strong platform, is supportive and carries their crown with grace, empathy, dignity and class.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

My favourite round has to be evening wear. The way it makes you feel is amazing… like a real life princess!

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

I don’t know how I deal with my pageant nerves1 I guess I do a lot of writing in my journal, as well as nice deep breathing exercises and shaking my hands out.

Hello everyone! My name is Melissa Gibbons, but I am usually known as Mel. I am 14 years old and I live in North Wales. I recently won the title of Miss Teen Wigan 2021/22. I was extremely proud of myself.

What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I entered pageants in the first place because I heard that they give you a boost of confidence which, at the time, I needed. I also heard that they help you in the future.

Have you competed before?

This was my first ever time competing and it was the best decision of my life.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I decided to compete in Miss Wigan & Northwest Beauty because they are an all-inclusive system and they are also such a close-knit community.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

Pageants have taught me that you can be any size, or have a funky personality like myself, and you can still be judged fairly.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

I don’t have a platform now, but I am raising funds for the UK Sepsis Trust.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title would have to be either Miss International United Kingdom or Miss Universe Great Britain.

What was it like when you won?

When I won, it was the best feeling ever! As I had never competed before, I had loads of nerves but when I was on stage, the nerves had gone. When I won I was so surprised!

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

The best advice I would give anyone would be to be yourself on stage and don’t stress. have you been doing since you won?

I haven’t been doing much as a Queen, because I think it’s still setting in.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

My favourite ever appearance would have to be when I walked up Snowdon.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

Lockdown hasn’t really affected my title much because I have only just started my reign.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Personally, I think a good role model would have to be someone with a great personality and a great sense of humour. So for this, I would have to say Harriotte Lane.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

My favourite pageant round would be fashion, because it’s a round where you can show your personality.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Honestly, now that I know what pageant nerves are, I would say the best thing to do is don’t think about it.

Competing in Miss Diamond Ireland in Aug 2021 What made you decide to compete in your current system?

The Diamond system celebrates the beauty and diversity in every woman, with no weight or height restrictions. I was on a personal journey to better my health and found this system suited me so well, which gave me a platform to inspire others to believe in themselves and their dreams. The second reason I chose Diamond was because of their chosen charity – Samaritans. My platform has always been mental health and suicide awareness.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

I believe pageantry has taught me the value of sisterhood. I can travel to the other side of the world and know someone from our pageant community is there, should I need them for anything. Pageantry has given me self-belief and confidence, along with the knowledge that I am good enough.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is mental health and suicide awareness, as well as self-love and body positivity. My hashtags for my campaigns are #MindYourMates and #BeautyAtAnySize. The reason behind these campaigns is I have had many friends and family pass to suicide. I also suffer with depression and find speaking out allows me to self-heal and inspire others to raise awareness. Also, to show its ok to not be ok.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title has and always will be Mom. As silly as this sounds, it is the best, most rewarding, title I can be given. I'm a single mum to three amazing children and they are my entire world - Aisling, Cian and Ollie x If you were to win what would it mean to you?

If I was to achieve the title of Miss Diamond Ireland, I would firstly ugly cry with happiness and be proud of the hard work and dedication I have given to the system for the past two years. It would mean the hard work and dedication has paid off and I can continue to promote my campaigns and also represent Ireland in Las Vegas at Regency, hoping I do them proud.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

The absolute best advice I can give anyone is to just be yourself. There is only one of you, so shine bright like the diamond you are.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

With Covid-19, it has put a stop to many appearances. However, I have been active within my community, promoting and supporting local businesses. I have been taking part in as many campaigns as I can. I have been hosting charity pageants and doing raffles to fundraisers for Samaritans. I have also done many national and international interviews for newspapers, TV and radio!

What is your favourite ever appearance?

I actually have two! I was lucky enough to help at a CASA Fundraiser. It was a coffee morning for people with disabilities, to raise money for their trip to Lourdes. My second was my own charity pageant, in Dublin, where we raised over €600 for St Vincent De Paul.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

Covid-19 has a lot to answer for!!! However, with the doom and gloom, I guess we have all learned the importance of health and family. My reign as Ms Diamond Cork was extended for another year, so this allowed me to bring in more charity money and gain more online appearances overall. So, I guess it's been a good and a bad thing!

What makes a good pageant role model?

I believe a good role model is someone people look up to. Someone who can lead and inspire. Someone who is true to themselves and is kind, compassionate and nurturing.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

My favourite round would have to be interview. This allows me to show my personality and share the work I have done in the lead up to finals.

At the very old age of 16, I was the victim of domestic violence and had to have plastic surgery to repair damage to my face. Three months after the surgery, my mother entered me into a pageant to raise my self-esteem. At that point, I was also living with undiagnosed Asperger’s Syndrome.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

The director, Diana Lawrence, and the history behind the Achievement World title. Diana has always been someone I’ve looked up to in pageantry, since she was Mrs American Achievement and then later was Mrs Galaxy. This system is part of her legacy and I wanted to support her, but also wanted to support the continued tradition of achievement pageantry, which focuses on inner beauty.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

How to be comfortable in my own skin.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

‘Smart with a Heart’ which focuses on education, eco awareness, cancer awareness and heart health awareness. As a person with Asperger’s, and an educator of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, a threetime cancer survivor, a heart failure and heart disease survivor and as a human that sees that our planet is in destress, I wanted to create a platform that could become the umbrella for all my passions. My reason for competing in pageantry is to share my story of survival and to educate people. ‘Smart with a Heart’ seemed perfect.

What’s your dream title?

I am torn between Ms Achievement World, which I’m competing for the title on July 17, 2021 and Mrs Galaxy.

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

Both titles are for amazing directors and both represent the best in pageantry. Winning either title would make me so proud. Visualizing it right now, actually brings me to tears.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

A piece of jewellery on your head does not make you a queen, it is what’s in your heart that makes you royalty.

What have you been doing since you won?

I am the founder and CEO of PageantryNOW, which is a live-streaming interview Facebook, Instagram and YouTube vlog. We interview titleholders from all over the world and share how they are changing their world using a crown and a sash. So, before winning my title, I was actively working to empower other titleholders and sharing their dreams and why they do this crazy thing called pageantry. After winning, I have continued to use the PageantryNOW platform to interview my sister Queens, as well as produce new PSA’s for ‘Smart with a Heart’ and the table has been turned - now I’m being interviewed by numerous TV shows and podcasts, sharing my story.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

Holding the new Mouawad Power of Unity crown for at Miss Universe 2019. For one minute I was Miss Universe!!

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

I have been ultra-careful during lockdown, due to autoimmune issues, and have been on quarantine for 14 months, so live appearances have been very limited until last month. I have been doing interviews the entire time online and have been on national and international TV speaking on behalf of the American Heart Association. I have not officially crowned my successor for Mrs Perfect Glamour International, as the pageant has been postponed until 2022, but my amazing directors Rich and Meili Ramos graciously allowed me to compete for the title of Ms Achievement World and are cheering me on for the win.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Someone who is true to themselves and gives their heart in service to others.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

Living in the moment and having fun. I often hear my ‘reptile brain’ telling me everything I’m doing wrong, so I just change the internal dialogue to the positives - especially because competition time is over in a blink of an eye.

Title, name & age?

Miss Eastbourne International and UK’s National Miss East Sussex Imogen Sands 21 What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I have always wanted to enter a pageant, but I was never very confident in myself or the way I looked.

This year, I have finished my BA honours degree in photography and I wanted to do something for me and have a wonderful experience doing something I’ve always wanted to do. I came across pageants again and thought let’s just go for it.

Have you competed before?

I haven’t competed in a pageant before. This is my first year in pageantry and I’m very excited. The journey. I’m already meeting different people and have found my platform – PCOS. I am very passionate about and it has created happiness for me.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

I have always kept an eye on pageantry and one day I saw a photograph of Harriotte Lane on Instagram. I know she is currently Miss International UK. Everything she has achieved and got from doing this pageant made me feel confident in myself that I can do it.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

This past year I have felt so comfortable within myself and my body along with being confident and believing in myself. The pageant process of fund-raising and reaching out to people has helped me grow in confidence hugely. It has helped me believe in myself, strive to be myself, be passionate in what I believe and to use my voice.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My pageant platform is PCOS, which stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I chose this as my platform because I have this condition and there are so many women that have no idea that they have this, or that it even exists. I also think that if I was taught about PCOS and other things like this when I was younger, I would have an idea of what was going on with my own body and I wouldn’t be so confused or upset as to why I was so different to everyone else. So, I want to speak up about PCOS, spread awareness and educate others.

What’s your dream title?

Miss International UK. If you were to win what would it mean to you?

I’m not sure how to describe it if I were to win. I just want to use my voice and help others use theirs and help others have self-belief. I want to help people in education, because the thing is I know now, as a young adult and having life experiences, there are so many things that, if I had known some information about it, would’ve helped me in advance. I am a woman on a mission and I will do it whether I win or not. I will use my voice to help others feel like they win too.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Believe in yourself. Believe fully in yourself. The inside and the outside. You may feel you’re not good enough and compare yourself to other finalists, but this is for you. This time is for you. You have entered the pageant because you have something you want to do. You have a plan. You have something to tell and to show others why you are strong - why you should win, why are you there. If you think you’re different and that’s a bad thing, it’s not. That’s what will make you stand out and make people pay attention to you. It will make others listen to you and listen to your passions and your voice.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

In the run-up to the pageant final, I have completed my BA honours in photography. I also continued learning Japanese and writing my dissertation - something I thought I could never do by myself, but I did it. I continued doing fitness classes, which I love to do with my family and I also used my Japanese to host little Japanese Zoom classes to help raise money for PCOS. I’ve spent time shopping for the perfect dress and I have found it - one I feel I can walk the red carpet in and that’s THE feeling. Soon I am planning to complete a groyne run on the beach to raise money for PCOS charities. I have raised £200 so far. I’m also working to get other appearances. A highlight is being on my local radio stations, coaching with the wonderful Crown Coach and working at Rathfinny Wine Estate.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

That would be being on both of my local radio stations in Eastbourne and Sussex talking about my platform and pageantry and how it has helped me grow in confidence.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

It’s been unfortunate that I haven’t been able to do any in-person appearances yet, however, it’s amazing that we have Zoom. I’ve still been able to do appearances through that, like attending quizzes and meeting other finalists. The lockdown hasn’t greatly affected my pageant journey, apart from the fact that things like appearances have been difficult, but there’s always a way to go around it and make things happen.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Someone who inspires and creates self-belief in others. Someone who uses their voice and listens. A person who is passionate and acts on that drive to make something happen, showing others they can do whatever they set their mind to. Someone who is different, celebrates that and helps others to embrace their differences too, turning insecurities and the phrase ‘I can’t’ into self-love and ‘I can’, and ‘I will’.

What round are you most looking forward too?

Evening gown of course. This is your time to feel glamorous and unstoppable in a dress that makes you feel empowered and absolutely you. You are walking on a red carpet in a gown, ready to pose for those to capture you and your energy. This is the moment for every finalist to feel like a Queen.

How are you planning on dealing with pageant nerves?

Remember that nerves are okay to have, because this is something exciting and something you care about. It shows you want to win. As soon as you get up on that stage they will disappear and it’s you in your moment. Walk your pageant walk and show you are the one. You’ve got this. I believe in you.

Interview with Miss York GB – Olivia-Alice Grant

Title, name & age?

Miss York GB 2021 Olivia-Alice Grant 20 years old What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I first entered a pageant when I was 15. I had no idea what a pageant was or what to expect, but having been bullied most of my school life. I thought that pageantry could help boost my confidence and give me something new and different to focus on. More than anything, I wanted a distraction. But pageants have provided me with so much more - they have boosted my ambition, drive, and determination. They have given me a platform to advocate for causes that I’m passionate about and more than anything they have given me the opportunity to meet incredible women with inspiring stories and make friends for life.

Have you competed before? If so, can you tell us about your journey?

I first competed in Miss Teen Great Britain back in 2016 as Miss Teen Powys, before moving onto the Galaxy system and competing twice for the Miss Teen Galaxy Wales title, where I placed 2nd runner up.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

When I started university, I decided to hang my pageant heels up for a few years so that I could place all of my focus on my degree. I didn’t want to try and split my time between the two, because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to give my all to both journeys at the same time. However, given the Covid-19 pandemic, I found myself with a lot more time than I had anticipated. I missed pageants so much and Miss GB is a system that I have always wanted to compete in. I think Covid has turned everybody’s lives upside down and changed us all in ways we didn’t expect, so when this opportunity came about, it just felt right and so I grabbed it with both hands. I haven’t looked back since.

I am so excited for what this year has to offer.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

Pageantry has taught me so much, it’s hard to pick just one thing. Pageants have taught me that you don’t have to listen to other people’s opinions of you. People will consistently try and knock you down in life but, at the end of the day, the ability to believe in yourself is what counts. Pageants have taught me to just be yourself because life is too short to be anybody else. Sometimes, especially in this age of social media, it can be so easy to get caught up in trying to be something, or someone, that you’re not and trying to conform to the stereotypes that we see plastered over Instagram, for example. It can be easy to forget who you are and what your goals and passions are when social media seemingly promotes everything but the authentic self. And that’s why I love pageants – because they don’t conform to these falsities. They encourage authenticity, they encourage reality and they support everybody’s individual motivations, platforms, beliefs and ambitions.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

This is something that I have been working on for a few months now. It is such an important and under-discussed topic and I wanted to make sure that I had the information and tools that I needed to really make a difference. Last year, I found a lump in my breast. I was told that, because of my age, it was most likely just my hormones. I had to fight for a consultation with a doctor. I had to fight for a referral to the breast clinic and I had to fight for a scan.

Earlier this year, I had that lump removed. I was lucky that the tests eventually showed it to be benign, however there are so many women my age, younger, in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s who aren’t so lucky. Yet, routine screening for breast cancer isn’t typically offered to women under the age of 50. My experience drove me to research this in more detail and, having spoken to women who have suffered or are suffering from breast cancer, it became abundantly clear that there is not enough information on breast health - on what to look for, who to talk to, or what to expect. There is such a stigma surrounding breasts and talking about boobs. I really don’t understand it. It is my ambition to start a bigger conversation on breast health, to raise awareness and to spread vital information that can help with early detection and prevention.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title…? This isn’t as easy to answer as you might think. Straight up, it would be Miss Great Britain, because that’s my dream today. It’s what I’m working towards, it’s the title that I know I will be able to use to boost my platform and really make a difference. Miss Great Britain is the title that I have dreamt about since I started pageants back when I was 15. However, perhaps in the future, the dream will be Miss Universe – you’ve gotta dream big right?!

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

If I was to win Miss Great Britain, it would mean the world to me. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and, if I was lucky enough to win the title, I would make sure to use it to the very best of my ability, advocating for the causes close to my heart and pushing to further my platform of breast cancer awareness.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Be kind. Never compare yourself to others. You are one of kind and perfect as you are. Take everything in your stride and know that you don’t have to do the same things that other pageant girls are doing in order to succeed.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

Since winning the title of Miss York, I have been on a mission to raise awareness for, and support, Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. Back in January, I set myself the challenge of running 300 miles in 60 days, which I have since completed. It’s something I am so proud of myself for achieving. In September I will completing a skydive and, between now and then, I have created an IGTV series called Tit Talk, where I will be talking to incredible men, women, doctors, nurses, radiographers, charity ambassadors and more about breast cancer, their stories and experiences, with the intention of spreading vital information and resonating with men and women who are going through the process of being diagnosed, suffering with, or having survived breast cancer.

What makes a good pageant role model?

A good pageant role model is someone relatable, open, and honest. Someone ambitious and confident. It’s someone who has a clear set of values and has the ability to inspire others. Pageantry isn’t just a competition, it’s a family. A role model is someone who understands this and, as a result, is more focused on others rather than themselves.

How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Remember that everyone is in the same boat. Talk to the other girls and support each other. I like to think of the end goal and remember what I’ve spent all this time working towards – focus in on that. Interview with Miss Diamond Curve Lancashire Heather Holderness

What made you enter pageants in the first place?

The mums. I’d put my daughter in pageantry previously to help with her confidence and I kept being asked if I was competing. I didn’t think of myself as pageant material, but then I’d never ask my child to something I wasn’t comfortable doing. Quite a few mums were doing charity pageants as mother/daughter, so I signed up for one and enjoyed myself.

Have you competed before? If so, can you tell us about your journey?

I competed in United Kingdom Rose in 2018. It was my first pageant, and I was a wreck. I thought it’d be fun to do it with my daughter, and it was, but I didn’t realise just how large a pageant it was or how underprepared I was. I was so busy getting my daughter ready that I didn’t focus on myself enough, but it really didn’t matter because I gained so much from the day. I made so many friends and the experience itself was wonderful.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

Diamond is a family run system, and it has strong core values. I see that love, loyalty, and compassion in my director. But most importantly, I’d say why I’ve stayed with Diamond - It’s because they get it, they understand hard times and resilience make a Diamond. They are born under pressure.

What's the best thing that pageants have taught you?

That the perfect date Is April 25th because it’s not too hot and not too cold, all you need is a light jacket... and world peace. Lol! Pageants have taught me to be comfortable in myself. I’m fat, I’m funny, I’m fabulous,

I’m a bi, I’m disabled, I’m mum to a princess and wife to a geek. I'm also a big old geek myself. My pageant pals, old and new, just accept me. I still have trouble accepting who I am at times, so to have that in a community is priceless.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My platform is mental health and body positivity. There’s a huge correlation between how we feel mentally and our physical being. When we say body positivity, a lot of the time, people think plus size empowerment and healthy habits, but it’s so much more than that. It's post-partum mums looking at tiger stripe bellies, LGBTQ+ youths figuring who they are in life, especially trans youths. It's people with disordered eating, people postsurgery. Whenever someone is in a negative mind space about their body, I want to be someone to lift them up and make them realise that it’s only a body, that your mind is what’s truly beautiful and astounding. Everyone deserves good mental health and body positivity is just part of that.

What’s your dream title?

Miss Diamond Curve - Regency International Curve. I want to go all the way. I’m in awe of American pageants and I want to experience that first-hand and you can do that with Diamond and Regency. It’s the first year they’ve had a Curve category so, to me, it’s a big deal and a positive step. Not all systems have Curve categories and I think Diamond doing so opens so many opportunities for women who wouldn’t necessarily think of pageantry as the progressive, inclusive industry it is.

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

It’d mean the world to me, because it’d just give so much value to everything I’ve been doing. As well as Functional Neurological Disorder, I have Fibromyalgia and the smallest tasks are just exhausting. Not everyone is going to get it or understand, and I get that Pageantry is a mystery to most, but I’ve gone from being independent, traveling and working to needing help making it to hospital appointments. From homemade soup to tinned and manageable to messy. So, to be recognised as contributing to the pageant community, to have a crown and be able to promote my system and the good pageantry does and to have that recognition with the public to make fundraising easier, would just be magical. Now, I’m on a college course for volunteer work, equality and diversity and I want to put that into action with a small gardening club that’s inclusive to disabled volunteers. It’s hard for me to talk and I feel sometimes a crown does that for you. I wouldn’t need to explain myself. It says this is who I am and what I’m about.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Be kind to yourself, don’t criticise too hard, love your body (it’s the only one you’ve got) and share kindness with others, because you never know what someone’s going through.

What makes a good pageant role model?

I think a good pageant role model is someone who believes in what they say.

It’s no good preaching inclusivity, love, and respect if you then don’t exemplify those things, because then your reputation isn’t the only thing in question... it’s how people see the system your affiliated to. As well as that though, I think it’s important to be affable and show good manners and grace. The Queens I look up to the most are confident and funny and loyal to their systems.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

Pageant prep. Some girls are practicing pageant walks, I’m practicing walking. Some are confident in interview; it sometimes takes me three attempts to say my name. It doesn’t matter, I’m not able bodied, I’m in my body and I’m embracing and accepting that. So, I’m working on my well-being. I’ve been getting acupuncture in my face and head to try to stimulate nerves to work. I’ve joined other's campaigns. I feel very blessed that so many people have joined in with #FNDAware. Because I have trouble speaking, I started the #MarshmallowChallenge for Samaritans. You say the word Samaritans while putting marshmallows in your mouth. It’s daft, but it’s to get people to understand that when it’s truly difficult to talk to someone, Samaritans are there to listen.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

I’m very proud of the #FNDAware campaign, but my favourite would have to be the meet and greet for Cinderella, the adult panto. The cast included drag royalty Stacey Layne Matthews and Diva DiCampo and they were donating the money from it to Chrone's Disease and Colitis. I look back on it now and it’s a great memory of a wonderful night out with a dear friend before COVID-19 happened. I also educated myself about conditions I didn’t know existed before.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

Drastically!!!! I had health issues, but I was independent and, most importantly to me, I was working in a shop that was important to my community, I was known to people, and I liked to help. During lockdown I was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder, I have paralysis of my limbs and face. I have trouble speaking, so physically and mentally I’ve changed so much over the last 18 months. Pageant wise, Diamond was postponed twice and, I’ve got to be honest, I took a break because I was just exhausted and depressed. I felt like 'what’s the point? I can’t do appearances, I look like hell, I feel worse and we we're fully shielding because of my husband’s sarcoidosis with a five-year-old at home'. The Curve women that had been with the system some time left for various reasons and the isolation was hard. When the FND hit, it was just something else on top of all the previous stress and heartache. You think what else can happen. My husband started blacking out and needed an emergency pacemaker fitting. But I had people message me and I have my sisterhood in the community. I did photo competitions with my daughter and fundraisers and the more I engaged, the more I understood that, although I’m limited physically, my mind is still strong, and I can still do this. This is my own battle. If show up on that stage, I’ve won, because being there and completing this journey is my own sense of pride and accomplishment. If I get a crown or not, at the end of the day, I can say I’ve given my all and I've done all I can. That’s all I want.

Interview with Steffi Moore - Miss West London International

Steffi Moore - Miss West London International - 25 What made you enter pageants in the first place?

I love new challenges and doing things outside my comfort zone, because I believe it helps you to grow as a person.

Also, this incredible opportunity allows me to build my confidence even further and to be part of a positive and inspiring community.

Have you competed before?

Miss International UK will be my first pageant. I can’t wait to give it my all and, as the world begins to return to normal, continue my pageant Journey.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

Miss International is part of the Pageant Girl system, run by an amazing team who are there for you every step of the way to support and build you up. The previous Queens in this system are all positive role models and are footsteps I would be honoured to follow in. It helps support the Christie charity, however, allows each pageant finalist to work towards raising awareness for their own platform. This is an incredible opportunity, What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

The stereotype surrounding beauty pageants is completely different to the reality of pageants. They consist of strong and powerful women who all make huge differences in the world. I’ve also learnt my own individual pageant style, which is priceless. I’ve even managed to master my walk in killer heels and make the most of my make up!!

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My pageant platform is surrounding heart conditions, but especially Cardiomyopathy UK. At 18 years of age, I was attending an appointment in the cardiac clinic when I was asked to stay in for tests and observations. A week later, I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (thickness around the heart muscle) and I had surgery to implant an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator). I had to make lots of lifestyle changes and tackle a dip in my mental health and wellbeing but, seven years later, I have raised over £2500 for charity, spoken at medical conferences and been part of multiple campaigns. I am currently under heart transplant assessment at my local hospital, but I like to focus on the here and now. My mum also has the condition too.

What’s your dream title?

My dream title is Miss International. If I was lucky enough to be crowned Miss International UK, I can make this dream a reality.

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

To win Miss International would be a dream come true. I would be able to use my platform to raise awareness and spread positivity. It would mean all my hard work and dedication has paid off and I am one step closer to the ultimate goal. I would probably smile so much that my jaw would hurt!

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Be yourself! You cannot pick a platform that you are not passionate about, so pick something that has meaning to you and interpret this as you wish. Whether that is doing a dance-a-thon or a bake sale, you are still making a difference by being you.

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

In the run up to the final, I have been taking part in my own fundraiser ’Steffi’s Virtual World Trek’. This is a yearlong fundraiser that involves me walking the distance of an international landmark, e.g. Great Ocean Road or Mount Kilimanjaro, in month-long timeframes. I am currently in month four, so I am a quarter of the way through already. Also, I have been making appearances in articles, campaigns and videos and I have been coaching with The Crown Coach by Harriotte Lane. This has helped me master my walk, my interview and learn new skills.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

My favourite appearance is an article written with Cardiomyoapthy UK talking about my fundraiser and it even mentions Captain Tom Moore. I have been limited on appearances due to lockdown, but the future of appearances is exciting and promising.

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

Lockdown has affected my pageant journey, but I have made it work anyway and been having a great experience.

Not being able to meet all my fellow pageant finalists face to face has been tough, but we have been catching up virtually so it will make it even more exciting when I see them on 23rd July for the finals. It has also made appearances virtual, which is great that we can still raise awareness while reaching people even further afield.

Outfit picking has been tougher as shops were closed, but I love pre-loved clothes, so this came in handy with people being at home and clearing out wardrobes!

What makes a good pageant role model?

I am a good pageant role model, because I have been part of the scouting community for 15 years as a volunteer.

I have achieved my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and I am a Queen Scout which is the highest award in Scouting.

I have also been newly appointed as the Chair of the Cardiomyopathy Youth Panel. So, I am showing that females can achieve greatness and inspire others to try something new and out of their normal remit. I have helped grow charity organisations and want to bring those skills into the pageant world. I am always up for sharing my personal stories, but I always do it in an optimistic way whilst keeping it real. I want to encourage others to do the same.

Interview with International Ms. New England Whitley Nabintu Marshall

Whitley Nabintu Marshall is an artist, activist, and entrepreneur based in Portland, Maine, who has been fostering and serving diverse communities in various roles since 2005, making an impact both locally and internationally. Whitley currently holds the title of International Ms. New England and hosts regular 'Compassionate Conversations', 'Healing Hikes', 'Mindset Magic' and a series of message-based photoshoots, focused on the markers of true beauty: compassion, strength, diversity, and body positivity.

On top of being an essential worker for the American Red Cross Biomedical Services for over 15 years, Whitley has co-founded multiple organizations spearheading several social and environmental initiatives, including World Roots Culture Exchange and the Compassionate Leadership Project. She is the co-director and choreographer for the Barefoot Truth Dance Company and is a performing member of Ikirenga Cy'Intore Rwandan Cultural Troupe.

Whitley showcases her award-winning art with her brand 'Artlovelifestyle' and will soon be launching Artlovelifestyle Magazine this coming fall.

Through her endeavours, she aspires to bridge communities through the arts and cultural exchange, cultivating a uniquely inclusive culture which drives conversation and inspires compassionate action. She hopes to empower people to embrace their unique, most authentic, and beautiful selves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Whitley loves helping people take steps toward their dreams and offers free and affordable, holistic solutions, as well as personal development coaching.

What made you enter pageants in the first place?

In 2018, I was shocked to be recruited to compete in the Mrs. Maine America pageant. Pageantry was a completely different world outside of my comfort zone, which was exactly why I knew it was something that would bring personal growth. As a professional dancer and community organizer, I am comfortable in front of an audience. I knew this would expand my vision, put me in front of an audience I normally would not be in front of, and give me the opportunity to increase my overall impact.

Have you competed before? If so, can you tell us about your journey?

This year I will be competing in my third pageant as International Ms. New England. I have previously held the titles of Mrs. Orr's Island America and Mrs. Portland America. I was honoured to place 2nd runner up in the Mrs. Maine America pageant in April 2021 and additionally received the Inspirational Woman Award and Congeniality Award in both 2019 & 2021, as well as the Spirit Award in 2019 and Community Service Award in 2021. Pageantry has helped me clarify my vision and goals in co-founding World Roots Culture Exchange and developing the Compassionate Leadership Project. It has opened up opportunities far greater than I could have imagined.

What made you decide to compete in your current system?

The International Ms. Pageant honours, celebrates, and connects empowering women of elegance and enterprise from around the globe. I am drawn to their mission and the many amazing opportunities they offer their delegates. They truly seek well rounded role models, not just models, and have taken intentional steps toward creating a more inclusive pageant. The 5th Annual International Ms. Pageant will host USA and International candidates in the United States surrounding New York Fashion Week from September 10-13, 2021. Activities include a city tour, tickets to NYFW and/or Broadway events, and the fabulous pageant.

What the best thing that pageants have taught you?

Pageantry has elevated my vision and helped me hone my real-life skills that go beyond the competition. Through pageant preparation I have really gotten to know myself in a much deeper way. This process has expanded myself and world awareness, clarified my vision and helped me put steps into place towards achieving my goals and dreams in pageantry and in life.

What’s your pageant platform and why?

My goal is to unify the community around the value of compassion. To me, compassion is empathy put into action. This ignited my vision for developing my platform, the Compassionate Leadership Project, and co-founding World Roots Culture Exchange.

Our mission is to build a worldwide network of compassionate leaders actively cultivating a culture of compassion through seeking to learn various perspectives, sharing stories, and serving the community. We strive towards bridging communities through the arts and cultural exchange. Our leadership training includes non-violent communication, conflict resolution, personal development, community service, and cultural exchange. I truly believe that if everyone took steps towards leading with compassion, we could solve all of the world's problems. As people identify as compassionate leaders, it will naturally guide their conscious decision-making. The Compassionate Leadership Project provides access to tools that will help prevent and manage everyday common challenges and injustices as well as reach our goals and fullest potential.

What’s your dream title?

I would love the opportunity to serve as International Ms!! It would be a dream to bring this mission and sisterhood around the globe while connecting and partnering with compassionate leaders and organizations, hosting Healing Hikes and sharing diverse perspectives through Compassionate Conversations, as well as volunteering and fundraising for organizations and charities.

If you were to win what would it mean to you?

If I were to win I would plan a national and international tour as International Ms, educating and advocating for Compassionate Leadership around the globe, and host Compassionate Conversations, Healing Hikes, and other events and fundraisers partnering with organizations through the Compassion Network. The prize money would allow me to hire a professional videographer for our leadership trainings, making it easier to make a greater impact with powerful content worldwide.

What’s the best advice you have for fellow pageant queens/finalists?

Step into confidence with your authentic self, relay your passions, and work your best angles on stage. Don't try to be the person you think the judges want you to be but do the work to really get to know yourself. If you show them the beauty that is unique to only you, your light will shine bright!

What have you been doing in the run up to your pageant final?

I currently have so many exciting endeavours! As I am writing this I am on a cross-country road trip from Maine to California with our Casita camper. My husband and I will be stopping at various National Parks along the way for adventures with our miniature dachshund named Mojo. Additionally, I have/am hosting several interviews for our new series called 'Compassionate Conversations', sponsored by World Roots Culture Exchange. We are planning upcoming events such as 'Cultural Acoustic Nights' and 'Healing Hikes' and will soon have Compassionate Leadership trainings and 'Compassionate Conversations' online. When we return, I will be hosting a series of message-based photoshoots and taking photo submissions highlighting the markers of true beauty: compassion, strength, diversity, and body positivity. Photos will be published in the debut issue Artlovelifestyle Magazine, which I will be launching this fall.

What is your favourite ever appearance?

I always look forward to volunteering at Camp Sunshine, which holds camps for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Those children are so resilient, and truly understand the importance of living in the moment. It is humbling to have the opportunity to give words of encouragement and hope when they are the ones who are the real inspirations. Their wisdom goes beyond their years and their smiles light up the night!

How has the lockdown due to Covid-19 affected your pageant journey?

This transformative year has motivated me to hone my coping skills and focus on improving my morning routine and personal development. This year has been difficult on many levels for me, as I lost my dad and another fatherly figure from Covid, and my performance life as the co-director of the Barefoot Truth Dance Company was put on hold. I remind myself of how every seemingly negative situation I have ever faced has opened a door of opportunity which has catapulted me into something astronomically greater than I could have imagined. The forced slowing down of quarantine has given me space to achieve many of the goals I had pushed to the backburner, solidify positive habits that hold strong in the toughest of times, and has illuminated the path for achieving my dreams.

What makes a good pageant role model?

Our life is not just for ourselves alone. It is also to encourage, empower, and inspire others to embrace their gifts, reach further toward our goals and personal development, so that we all can live our best, most fulfilled lives of purpose. If we integrate our passion with compassionate action, we show our ideas and beliefs to others by the examples we set, and not merely by the ideas we share.

What’s your favourite pageant round?

Interview is my favourite phase of competition. I love the preparation process as well as connecting with the judges and articulating my vision and goals. I have seen the transformative power of interview not only in myself but in everyone who takes time to prepare. It is truly empowering How do you deal with pageant nerves?

Each morning I have a routine which includes meditation and prayer, affirmations, journaling, reading, visualization of my day and week, exercising, and goal setting. These prepare my mindset, get me in the zone, and help me focus on the small steps that will help me reach my dreams. Right before the competition I do a similar routine to easy any anxiety, let go, and let my preparedness take over. Self-Care is extremely important for and a large part of what I promote through the Compassionate Leadership Project. Compassion is key in every area: compassion towards humanity, animals, the Earth, and most importantly, yourself. It is important to put yourself care first, as you cannot help others until you have cared for yourself.

Inclusion Means No Exceptions – By Emma-Jay Webber Miss Diamond Curve Bristol

Inclusion means 'No Exceptions' and the fashion industry needs to present this message to unify all people through equal representation inclusive of, but not exclusive to, gender, size, sexual orientation, and race.

Diversity and Inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals needs to be felt for more than a fleeting catwalk moment or short campaign for Pride month and then forgotten for the rest of the year.

Currently there are approximately 3.6 million gay people in Britain. If those individuals cannot see themselves represented or be able to relate to a brand, why would they want to buy your products or compete in your pageant?

For every person in the LGBTQ+ community, each experience of underrepresentation or misrepresentation in the fashion industry is different. Everyone has their opinion on whether LGBTQ+ colours used by fashion brands during Pride or History Month is appropriation or appreciation. To some in the LQBTQ+ community, it feels like a tick box exercise that needs to be completed by the fashion industry to pacify the LGBTQ+ community for ‘their month’.

Fashion is not the only industry that the LQBTQ+ Community needs more representation. There are also many obstacles for LGBTQ+ in pageantry. We are still trying to battle visibility in an archaic, antiquated industry in desperate need of modernisation. Diversity in pageantry is a hot topic, as in December of 2019 for the first time in history, five of the most prestigious titles - Miss World, Miss Universe, Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss America - are all held by women of colour. The latest Miss Universe saw its first openly lesbian finalist, but still no LGBTQ+ representations as a Queen! International Finals can also be a daunting place for an LGBTQ+ individual. Different countries from around the world come to compete. Each country has their own belief systems, backgrounds and religions therefore may not have any known LGBTQ+ visibility.

Pageantry is a hugely heteronormative industry, severely lacking in LGBTQ+ role models. There are LGBTQ+ women in pageantry that are afraid to 'come out' due to fear of titles being stripped away, fear of being judged adversely and fear over potential homophobia. Pageantry is slowly being brought up into the 21st Century and becoming more modern and diverse. However, there are still a number of 'old fashioned' and outdated rules or terms and conditions. LGBTQ+ in pageantry needs to be given a voice and provide visibility for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Emma-Jay, the current Miss Diamond Curve Bristol and the first openly gay queen in mainstream UK pageantry, represents the change and is a beacon of light for those still hidden from sight, due to fears of rejection instilled in them by an outmoded industry. She the former Miss World Class England and has won four titles and many awards, competing at National and International level. She has become a voice for LGBTQ+ issues as a regular contributor to BBC Radio, has been the Cover Girl of World Class Beauty Queens Magazine TWICE and nominated for World Class Woman of The Year 2020. Most importantly Emma-Jay is changing the game for LGBTQ+ individuals in pageantry. Her campaigns #IAmVisible, #PageantPride and #WalkWithPride have people taking part from across the globe and thus proving that there are no barriers in becoming a modern beauty queen and that any girl, regardless of sexuality, is deserving of the crown. Pride Month 2021 has been fantastic for pageantry. There has been a huge increase for LGBTQ+. More girls are choosing LGBTQ+ as their platforms and, longer overdue, much needed conversations have started to happen. There is still much work to be done but the pageant industry is taking huge strides in the right direction!

Away from Pageantry Emma-Jay is a plus-size model, with an artistic flare. Speaking with Emma-Jay she says: "What I love about modelling is that, at the beginning, you are a blank canvas. Whether that's the studio, on location or runway. You are a total blank canvas. I love being able to express myself through being creative and then producing the final images that become a piece of art."

Some of the images that Emma-Jay has produced show her love of creativity, expressiveness, and arts. She has worked with several different photographers on different projects, but her favourite is Jane Dyer - a UK photographer that specialises in landscape photography. Together, as a team, they have produced images that are gallery worthy.

Emma-Jay would love to see a world where the LQBTQ+ community are not seen as 'different', or not made to feel like a tick box exercise for companies to show how ‘inclusive’ they are. It should be the norm. We are all humans, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, size, and we should all be treated equally, regardless of skin colour or who you love. The norm should be for society not to assume every person identifies as heterosexual. It should be that we assume everyone is different and individual. It is assumptions that undermine the LGBTQ+ community.

Emma-Jay also hopes that her work in modelling and pageantry will help instill confidence and self-worth in others, enabling them to strive to be the best version of themselves, whatever that maybe, by showing what can be achieved when you believe in yourself and push yourself out of your comfort zone. She wishes to pass on the message that you should never doubt yourself and you are deserving of every opportunity in the world to pursue your dreams. Being unique is what makes us all beautiful.
