Meet Dawn Skelton

Sometimes life throws a curve ball, and how we choose to handle that curve ball often determines our future. Dawn felt trapped in an abusive, controlling relationship and finally had the courage to say enough. This decision found Dawn and her two sons homeless and having to start over. At the same time Dawn’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and required assistance from her daughter. Dawn wanted to stay in Charlotte County to help care for mother. Her passion is Early Learning Education, and she finds her job at Joyful Noise Learning Center fulfilling and rewarding. Rental prices were too high for her preschool teacher budget and with no place to go, a friend offered Dawn a spare room to stay with one of her sons sleeping on the floor and the other temporarily staying with a friend in Lakeland. Dawn realized she needed to invest in her own future and applied for the Habitat Homeownership Program. She was approved for the program in August, 2019, and was chosen as our 2020 Apostles Build homeowner.
She worked diligently to complete her program requirements and has been working with the church volunteers on the construction of her home. Soon Dawn and her sons will be living in their new Habitat home while creating a secure future. I’d say Dawn hit that curve ball out of the park! We are proud of her and the accomplishments she has made. We thank you for continuing to support the Habitat mission so we can offer families like Dawn's an opportunity to secure a brighter future.
