BOX OFFICE REVIEWS THE INBETWEENERS

Starring: Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Lydia Rose Bewley, Laura Haddock Director: Ben Palmer Rating: 15

In this feature length adaptation of the hit Channel 4 comedy, our four heroes Will (Bird), Simon (Thomas), Neil (Harrison) and Jay (Buckley) are at the end of their final year at Rudge Park Comprehensive and off to Greece in search of 'sex, booze, sex, tits, booze and sex', thanks to Jay's inheritance. Of course, if nothing went wrong it would all be too simple. As it turns out, Simon's ex Carli (Emily Head) is on holiday at the same spot, which rather puts the kybosh on his trying to forget her. But their booze-fuelled holiday begins to look up when they meet four girls in a nightclub. Thankfully, The Inbetweeners hasn't gone the way of some of the less successful movie adaptations (think Kevin and Perry, for example), largely due to the fact that the original team behind the original programme have full control here. The pace and tone that made the original so funny and successful have made it across nicely to the big screen version, with the same excellent performances from all four leads that we've come to know and love throughout their time on the small screen. A great script, consistent laugh-rate and some really, really crude sight gags all come together for a laugh-out-loud, hilariously funny effort. It's the most hotly-anticipated movie of the year so far, and definitely won't disappoint fans of the show. Highly recommended.

MAKE UP YOU CAN WAKE UP IN For most women, applying make-up in the morning is like getting dressed or having breakfast it's just part of the normal routine. But what if you didn't have to spend a fortune on regularly buying beauty products or spend hours prettifying yourself? What if you woke up every day with your make-up looking as fresh as a character from a TV show? It may be possible, if you opt for semi-permanent make-up. One woman who investigated this area a few years ago and has since become an expert on it is Debra Robson-Lawrence. Based in her discreet Harley Street clinic, Robson-Lawrence pioneered semi-permanent make-up over 20 years ago and these days is acknowledged as a leader in her field. She is sought out by everyone from actresses desiring high-definition perfection right through to women who've lost their eyebrows through chemotherapy or alopecia and who want to look their confident best again. Cosmetic surgeon Dr Rajiv Grover has described Robson-Lawrence as having "a magic touch". So, what is semi-permanent make-up? It's easy for Hollywood horror stories to spring to mind when you think of this form of make-up. But we've come a long way since the days of bold and scary-looking tattooed-on eyebrows. These days the whole point is that it's subtle enough to make you simply look fresher and prettier, which is the main reason that it's good to visit a practitioner who really knows what they're doing.

10

PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION ACROSS SPAIN WHEN APPLYING TO ADVERTS

Semi-permanent make-up can be an option for a number of looks including enhancing brows, contouring and defining lips or adding a flattering infusion of rosiness to lips that are grey or have a lifeless appearance. It can even be used to successfully recreate the appearance of eyelashes - a godsend for anyone who has lost their own eyelashes through alopecia or cancer, or for burns patients. Robson-Lawrence has trademarked a micro-pigmentation technique called Fame (Facial Aesthetic Micro Enhancement), which is ultra-delicate. The clinic also has a technique that can be used for optical nipple and areola reconstruction in women who've had implants after partial or total mastectomies. Ten per cent of the cost of each reconstructive procedure is donated to Breast Cancer Care. So if you fancy turning back the clock a few years or simply correcting a few flaws, then semi-permanent make-up may well be worth considering.

If you've ever spent two weeks on the beach gaining the perfect tan - then you've probably also spent two weeks watching your white bits get whiter. For bikini-wearing women, it can be very frustrating to then come home to show off your tan in a nice backless number - while at the same time displaying the tell-tale strap marks across your back. However, happy holidaymakers can make the most of a sizzling summer by wearing swimsuits that have been dubbed "the full monty". Modest Brits will finally get to fulfil their naked ambitions for a flawless all-over tan by covering up with bikinis and trunks that let the sun in - but keep you covered up. The cheeky creations come from British manufacturer Kiniki, which has seen a surge in requests from sun worshippers for its latest designs after securing a worldwide patent on the innovative material. "These swimsuits are the perfect solution for shy Brits who don't want white bits," says John Walker, founder of Kiniki.

"The fabric is actually a fine mesh but you can't see through it as we have created an optical illusion that keeps your privates private. Covering up with Kiniki is the English way of going the full monty." The fabric, Transol, allows 80% of the sun's ultra-violet rays to pass through it, allowing wearers to obtain that all-over bronzed look while minimalising tan lines. However, it is important to remember that the sun's rays can be very strong and will pass through the swimwear. Therefore, sun lotion should still be applied even under areas covered by swimwear. Established in 1976, Kiniki, based in Newcastle-Under-Lyme, has grown from a backroom business for mail order men's underwear into a manufacturing success story with more than one million sales a year under its belt. The swimwear is available for both men and women in a variety of styles and colours.

BEAUTIFUL HAIR - WH Women have always known that hair becomes more difficult to style and maintain with age, but experts now confirm that it does indeed age along with our skin and bodies. Whenever hair is neglected or abused its strength starts to decline, no matter what your age. However, ageing hair is far more delicate and needs a little extra tender loving care. Hair actually starts to age after the age of 25. Each strand shrinks 10 per cent in diameter and may become duller due to loss of the colour pigment melanin. Just like prematurely aged skin, hair can also be prematurely aged by abuse and misuse of chemicals and heat styling tools. Signs include weakness or brittleness, dryness, flaking scalp, split ends and an extra fine and frizzy texture. Ageing hair needs to be strengthened and moisturised by the right combination of products. This can be easily achieved with a daily care regime as well as the right haircut. Celebrity New York hair designer Philip Pelusi recommends that ageing hair be cut and styled a little differently. He says softer, loose curls or waves make anyone appear younger, whereas sharp angles and severe shapes will have the opposite effect. Pelusi also suggests that ageing hair looks at its best when treated to softer, slightly lighter hair colour with varying tones. Dark, solid shades must be avoided. Hair colour also needs to complement skin and eye colour, so a consultation with a skilled salon colourist is advisable.

HATEVER YOUR AGE Pelusi offers his top 10 anti-ageing tips for hair. Use products specifically designed to rejuvenate ageing hair. Dove Pro-Age shampoo and conditioner is specifically made for ageing hair, but your hairdresser can tailormake a hair care regime for you. Follow the regime consistently for best results. Treat your hair to regular salon hair and scalp treatments for deep, intense conditioning. Supply nutrients to your hair through a healthy diet and supplements of essential fatty acids. Hair is definitely a reflection of inner health. Drink plenty of water to keep skin and hair hydrated. Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood flow to the scalp. This will help encourage healthy hair growth. Maintain a relaxation programme to keep stress at bay. Stress can take its toll on the health of your hair and skin. Get plenty of rest. Proper sleep is very important to maintain the health of the entire body, including the hair. Keep the scalp in its optimum healthy state. A healthy scalp means healthy hair. Treat wet hair with tender loving care. Apply a detangling product before combing it and use a wide toothed comb only. Never brush wet hair as it will break. Sleep on a satin pillowcase to reduce friction on the hair, which can cause breakage.

Seaweed has long been known as a health remedy. Devotees swear by its curative qualities if its derivatives are added to bath water and the beneficial effects it can have if used in cooking. But now scientists have discovered that it could be useful for increasing the amount of fibre in our diet. A team of researchers at Newcastle University has reported that food high in fat and calories could be made healthier by adding the seaweed extract known as alginate. Junk food junkies would be able to carry on eating naughty nibbles such as burgers and cakes so long as they were laced with the additive, making it a new weapon in the constant battle against obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and bowel cancer. They have explained that alginates have many benefits, most notably that they are odourless and tasteless so can be added to the ingredients of fattening foods without consumers sacrificing any of their enjoyment of them.

SEAW THE NE MUSTMUST-

Professor Jeff Pearson, a member of the research team, said, "We believe it's hard to change people's habits and that the most practical solution is to improve the food they do eat. "With a burger, for example, you would simply remove some of the fat and replace it with the seaweed extract, which is an entirely natural product from a sustainable resource." He has already made loaves of bread containing the seaweed extract and thinks this is one of the best ways to reach people, because it is a staple of our diets. "Adding the seaweed extract could quadruple the amount of fibre in white bread," he said.

Seaweed has a long history as a health benefit. In the 18th Century, iodine was isolated by distilling the long ribbons, or thalli, and bladderwrack be came this element's main source for more than 50 years. It was used extensively to treat goitre, a swelling of the thyroid related to lack of iodine. The Japanese eat lots of seaweed for its concentrated mineral content. As well as being an excellent source of iodine, seaweed contains calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc.

WEED: EW DIET -HAVE

Copper and iron are good for healthy blood while magnesium assists in the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. Calcium is needed for healthy bones and potassium for the maintenance of body cells and balance of fluids. Zinc helps build up the body's immune system. Most seaweeds are said to contain some B vitamins and beta carotene, the plant form of vitamin A. However, the amount varies according to the type of seaweed and how it is served. Beta carotene, an antioxidant, may help to prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer.

Traditionally, seaweed has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments including constipation, colds, arthritis and rheumatism. High in sodium, it is not recommended for those on a low sodium diet. The Japanese also believe seaweed is good for hair and helps to prevent throat cancer. It is used to enhance the flavour of salads, soups and savoury dishes. In fact, seaweed is eaten in 25 per cent of food in the Japanese diet.

Richard Alexander has worked in financial services for 36 years and provides specialist financial planning services to expat and UK clients with accumulated capital who prefer the personal touch of a dedicated and trusted financial adviser. Richard aims to build long term client relationships by understanding their aspirations, to appreciate their concerns, sensitivities and risk tolerances and to provide a bespoke solution designed to achieve their goals. At the core of financial planning is recognition of the main objectives, which can often be expressed as a need for growth or income. Even when the objective is simply wealth preservation, a focus on growth will be needed to offset the effects of inflation. For people moving or retiring abroad, currency risk is a further consideration. Pension income may arise in the currency of the country of origin and fluctuations in exchange rates will affect the level of income. However, some private pensions can be transferred into a new plan held in the appropriate currency which will remove future currency risk. Inheritance Tax may be a major consideration; Inheritance Tax in the UK is calculated by reference to the Estate of the deceased person whereas in Spain, it is calculated by reference to the beneficiaries, with the rates of tax varying, depending on who the beneficiaries are and their relationship to the deceased. Tax may also be due in both countries but there is a dual tax treaty which should ensure that double taxation can normally be avoided. Earlier UK planning may have involved the use of Trusts in the UK or offshore. If this is the case, you need to be aware that Spain does not recognise the status of Trusts and if you are the Settlor of a Trust who has become Spanish tax resident, the local tax authorities are likely to ignore the Trust and treat the assets and income or gains arising as your personal income or gains and seek to tax you accordingly. Clients of RAFP benefit from our relationship with local tax specialists in each country and can be confident that their investments will be appropriate to their individual tax position and future plans.

In under a decade, eBay has grown into an incredible auction website that commands an audience of around 37 million people around the world. Some look for bargain second-hand goods, others look for cheaper versions of something they've spotted in the shops, and others just find themselves addictively browsing five times a day, which has to be a bit healthier than smoking, though perhaps no cheaper. As long as you know what you are looking for, you can usually find it posted on eBay. From skin care products to outfits for you pooch, car care products to shoes - both footwear and alloys - you can bid for what you want and for the price that you are willing to pay. Apart from the opportunity for a real bargain, there are growing numbers of aficionados who think eBay is simply more fun than a shopping mall. While the process of bidding can see like a tiresome process at your first try, when you do win a bid at a good price, you might feel like you've won your item, which is exactly what eBay tells you when you've 'won' the item. Feeling victorious over a store purchase just doesn't come that often, unless you happen to find the very last this season's must have that just happens to be your size. "eBay is entertainment," says Dawn Reno, co-author of The Unofficial Guide to eBay and Online Auctions . "It's different all the time, never the same. Every half-hour there's all new stuff, which is so indicative of the internet as a whole. "Plus, people love an auction. There's something about bidding that gets the heart pounding." eBay has certainly become one of the most successful concepts of the internet age. Uniquely, it is like the world's largest second-hand shop and all the bargain-basement shops in the world all rolled into one. Jim Griffith, head trainer of eBay University - the company's road show of seminars for novice buyers and sellers - says, "Even if you don't use it, you know someone who does, and you've had to listen to their stories about how much they love it." Since its creation, eBay has become a daily fix for millions of buyers in search of quirky stuff. It's addictive and many homeowners find themselves hunting around on eBay instead of sitting down in front of the television. People with laptops, of course, often do both at the same time. "Five minutes of eBay will expose you to more items than you'll ever see in a shopping centre," says Marsha Collier, co-author of eBay for Dummies . On any given day, there are millions items for sale on eBay, with millions of new items added daily. Sales per day run up into the many millions of pounds. For many homeowners, it has become a way to buy what they want and sell what they don't want.

Spanish Festiv FUENGIROLA’S FERIA

Fuengirola’s Feria is held from the 6th to the 12th October each year and features displays by horses as well as bullfights, flamenco dancing and other popular Spanish cultural activities. At the beginning of the celebrations, preparations began in the Plaza de la Constitucion - silken flags are strewn across the plaza, and the church is decorated with hundreds of wonderful flowers. On Saturday, everyone congregates in the plaza and Flamenco dancing begins... Throughout the streets of Fuengirola on Saturday, different scenes of festivity can be seen. All week a wonderful fair (carnival) with many great rides and stalls, plus restaurants and bars, is available in the fairgrounds of Fuengirola. You can ride in a beautiful carriage drawn by horses through the town to the Feria grounds during the festivities.

vals October THE PILAR FESTIVAL, ZARAGOZA The Pilar Festival is celebrated every year on the 12th October and lasts for around 12 days when Zaragoza comes alive with music, parades, flowers and theatre in honour of the Virgin of Pilar. Trails of roses, lilies, orchids and gladiolus wind their way to the Plaza de Pilar as an offering to the Virgin. During this wonderful celebration of culture and history music and dance take to the streets. The music is not bound by one particular kind and you will hear reggae, jazz, pop, rock, and folk to name but a few. Spontaneous flamenco dancing is common but a distinctive form of dancing that you're unlikely to have come across is the Jota. This dance can be traced back to the 1600s although it has changed somewhat from its original form. You can join in the street celebrations and learn to dance the jota with the locals. Another novelty is the procession of the giants and big heads (gigantes y cabezudos) in which huge papier mache figures join the carnival on the street and mingle with the crowds. Bull fighting is another aspect of this celebration, because as with all Spanish gatherings, the bull must make his appearance. He is quite a distinguished part of the Spanish history so a celebration without him wouldn’t be quite the same. Plays and theatre are another big part of this celebration often attracting famous actors and actresses who can often be spotted entertaining the crowds. The one act plays are particularly enjoyable. 23

Despite reports of economic gloom, falling house prices and a recession there are still huge profits to be made in international property particularly in emerging markets that are currently competitively priced but set to boom.

The only thing standing between you and your property investment abroad is a little inside information. To that end, property and investment company Aston Lloyd, has compiled a report called The Seven Property Hotspots, identifying the top seven places and cities in the world where you are most likely to make a profit. 1. SLOVAKIA: A key emerging market in the European Union, the country's property prices have risen by 100 per cent since 2004. Where to invest : Central Bratislava where yields are high. Gross yields on 100 square metre and 120 square metre apartments are around 10 per cent. Watch out for : Minor land issues caused by unsolved heritage disputes prior to 1989 as these may require a prolonged acquisition procedure. 2. CHINA: Home to 21 per cent of the world's population and forecast to be larger than the US economy by 2045. Where to invest: Shanghai with an increasing demand for high-end property. Investment in the city's infrastructure is expected to sustain price growth. Watch out for: Consult with solicitors on precise property rights as given the communist government's policies, certain property rights are not guaranteed. 3. NORTHERN CYPRUS: Plans for reunification with the Republic of Cyprus, combined with average annual economic growth of 12.7 per cent since 2003, Northern Cyprus is a key property hotspot. Where to invest: Bogaz, the coastal fishing village is the hotspot for investment. It is popular for its beaches, sought after restaurants and its strategic location near Famugusta. Watch out for: With the division of the island in 1974 and the forced removal of residents in certain areas, some claims to property may exist if the island division is settled and displaced northern Cypriots return from the south.

24

PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION ACROSS SPAIN WHEN APPLYING TO ADVERTS

4. UKRAINE: The second largest economy among the former Soviet States, with a predicted sustained GDP growth of five per cent per annum through to 2010. Ukrainian property in some areas is now priced higher than Warsaw and Amsterdam. Where to invest: Kiev has a growing expatriate community and an increasing demand created for high-standard builds in the capital. Prices have been driven up by demand. Watch out for: Levels of corruption are high so a competent solicitor is essential. Taxes are also moderate to high. 5. BULGARIA: A full member of the EU and tipped to receive over ÂŁ8.8bn in EU development funding to 2013. Where to invest: Sofia, the capital city and home to majority of Bulgaria's 200,000 millionaires. Prices here rose by 35 per cent in 2007, making it a strong property investment. Watch out for: Closing costs are high (VAT, municipal tax, notary fees, registration fees and agent commission are paid by the buyer). Costs incurred by the buyer can therefore be up to 25 per cent. There is also rental income tax so investors should make sure their investment returns profitable yields. 6. TURKEY: Average annual growth rate of seven per cent since 2004, Turkey has established itself as a leading emerging market for property investors. With a burgeoning tourist industry and planned reforms ahead of its EU accession, it's poised to become one of the world's top 10 economies by 2050. Where to buy: Belek, Turkey's golfing mecca with plans to add up to 15 golf courses to its range of five-star golf retreats over the coming years. Belek is bathed in sunshine for 320 days a year. Property investment has increased by 40 per cent since 2005. Watch out for: Check the planning so you don't have ugly builds near your investment; ensure that property for sale is accompanied by title deeds and make sure you get a competent solicitor to explain the terms before making the decision to purchase. 7. POLAND: Poised to become the manufacturing hub of Europe, the country's housing market is significantly larger than other European emerging markets and mortgages are easier to obtain. Where to buy: Warsaw, high housing demand and profitable long-stay rental properties. Krakow is well suited for rental investors with a housing supply that does not meet the demands of its high earning population. Watch out for: Growth in Warsaw potentially unsustainable; increased due diligence on behalf of investors as some vendors are offering inflated prices taking advantage of the boom in foreign speculative buying.

Even the dominant worldwide companies like McDonalds & Coca-Cola advertise on a regular basis. When customers think of a product they want – whom do you want them to think of? If they don’t know who you are or what you have to offer they will be turning to your competitors. Every day you are not advertising is another day your competitors win your potential customers. Those customers might not need your product immediately but the more often they see your Company Name the more chances they will remember it when they do need your product. During the busy hot summer months when holidaymakers are making your tills ring, it is all too easy to forget that come September you will need to actively encourage new customers to use your business. Advertising in our Online Publication ACROSS SPAIN offers realistically priced advert costs, helping to save your overall budget plus giving your company great exposure to the general public. A large survey was conducted in 2009, which centred on the changing reading habits of the general public. The over-whelming opinion, when it came to reading was that people prefer to read a newspaper or magazine ON-LINE because it was FREE, it was easy to access & it is more environmentally friendly, so no wastage of paper. Each monthly issue of ACROSS SPAIN is electronically delivered to almost 100,000 recipients, which not only offers genuinely low advertising rates for businesses but also offers the readers a publication that they look forward to receiving full of interesting articles and features. We also offer businesses the opportunity to offer Special Discounts to their customers using our Discount Voucher Section at the rear of the ACROSS SPAIN on-line Magazine. Here you can encourage potential customers to visit you at perhaps a quieter time of the week and keep those tills ringing. For details of how to advertise in our next issue please email:

Many property investors look to buy abroad. For those wanting to tap into the rental market, it makes sense to look where property is cheaper and the rental properties are in hot demand. Popular recent arrivals on the rental market map are eastern European countries including Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia, and as far afield as Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. The demand for self-catering accommodation in Dubai has also grown in the past 12 months. With so many new developments under way in all of these burgeoning property investment markets, the number of self catering options is expected to grow for tourists. Although savvy investors are always looking for up-and-coming markets to make a quick euro, it is Europe where most of overseas property investment is concentrated. The top three countries for rental holiday homes are Spain, France and Italy, where tourism and holiday property are firmly established. Spain, France and Italy may not offer the cheapest properties abroad, but when it comes to rental markets they are firm favourites. If you buy in the right location you are almost guaranteed a regular rental income, which compensates for the higher purchase price.

For those seeking the laid-back lifestyle and temperate climate found in Spain, but away from the over-developed Costa's, Portugal has experienced the fiercest holiday home growth in western Europe. The number of Portuguese holiday homes available to let has increased in excess of 300 per cent. Another destination showing investment promise and working on attracting more holidaymakers is Cyprus. The number of holiday home rentals there has more than doubled supporting figures from the Cypriot Land Registry which reveal that 12,000 Britons now own homes on the island. These figures demonstrate the ongoing attraction of western Europe as an investment location and how, with its easy access from the UK, it still has property investment Potential. With yet more investment in eastern Europe and South America it will be interesting to monitor how these markets develop in the next couple of years. It is vital for investors that there is a sufficient tourism draw and that affordable flights are available in order for holidaymakers to be drawn to these areas. No matter how many developments are built or holiday homes advertised, there needs to be a demand from holidaymakers for self catering accommodation.

Long tainted as desperately uncool, latest research finds the market for lower alcoholic drinks (LADs) is booming, as sales outperform the alcoholic market as a whole. Following years of stagnant growth, sales of LADs are thriving, with value and volume having both increased by around 10% in the last few years alone. Growth in the low alcoholic drinks market has been driven by improvements in quality. These drinks offer the taste sensation not met by many sweet soft drinks today. An ongoing focus on anti-social binge drinking, safe driving and health issues is also driving consumer demand, as health conscious consumers cutback on their alcohol intake. Although the market remains small and niche, at just 0.3% of volume sales in the alcohol market, sales of these lower alcoholic varieties are outperforming the alcohol market as a whole. Sales of lower alcoholic drinks are going from strength to strength. Innovation is driving the market with new launches and brand extensions, and product quality continues to improve. Lager dominates, buoyed by investment in new lower and mid-strength variants, but cider sales are finally moving forward and wine is believed to offer great potential. The low alcoholic drinks market will increase in value by 25% over the next couple of years to reach ÂŁ82.7 million by 2013. 32

Though a bit heavy on the neon, Las Vegas is a true feast for the eyes. Every hotel is striving to top the next one with its own unique theme, majestic entrances, enticing casinos, delectable restaurants and impressive entertainment. It can be said that Las Vegas does not have a boring bone in its body. The Las Vegas tourism board initially enticed adults to come and play in 'Sin City' but then advertised the lively city as a family-friendly destination in the 1990s. But Vegas is focusing its attention on the adults again with the new tagline: "What happens here, stays here." City advertisers want to attract people from all over the world to their own adult playground, complete with endless gambling, alcohol, food and entertainment. It is billed as a magical place that will cater to every need and fulfil every fantasy. The hotels in Las Vegas are truly incredible to behold. They pay homage to other unique cities, like New York, Venice and Paris, by recreating smaller versions of these cities. New York, New York hotel reconstructs the lively streets of Gotham. The Venetian hotel has a huge indoor canal complete with gondolas and gondoliers. The Paris hotel experience comes complete with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. There are tributes to other themes as well, including ancient Rome (Caesar's Palace), Hollywood (MGM Grand), pirates (Treasure Island), Arabian nights (Aladdin) and many more. Two of the nicest hotels with casinos in Las Vegas, the Bellagio and the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel, don't have specific themes besides that of opulence and luxury. Vegas entertainment has always been a huge draw for tourists. Magicians, such as Penn and Teller entertain crowds with their amazing optical illusions. Entertainers, like Donny & Marie Osmond still command packed houses night after night with their well-loved repertoire of musical favourites.

That's not to mention the many world-famous stars that perform in the city each year. Shopping and eating are two popular pastimes in Las Vegas. Caesar's Palace offers a world-class shopping mall featuring a painted blue sky with clouds adorning the ceiling. The Venetian also has first class shopping with many designer brands. Most of the other hotels showcase several great shops inside their lobbies and host many more on their premises. When hunger strikes, there is no shortage of fabulous food. Las Vegas is no longer a place of all-you-can-eat-buffets. World-renowned chefs Wolfgang Puck (Spago) and Emeril Lagasse have several excellent eateries in town and many of the prominent hotels boast other award-winning restaurants. Of course, the most popular reason for visiting Las Vegas is for the gambling casinos. From the nickel slot machines to the rooms of tables reserved for those starting bets over $1,000, there is a venue for every budget. Games such as craps, blackjack and baccarat draw millions of people a year to try their hand at the tables, accompanied by attractive cocktail waitresses handing out free drinks. There are some success stories, but many more sob stories, when people arrive home from their jaunts to Las Vegas after playing against the casinos. Amateur gamblers who visit Las Vegas report that it is best to decide how much money to play with before starting and sticking with that limit. Las Vegas, at its best, is a destination for a bit of harmless fun in sensible excess.

At first glance, there is little about a city-break that screams "child-friendly". With its busy roads, frantic city workers and a distinct lack of greenery you would be forgiven for thinking this would be the worst place to bring a child. But you would be wrong, as more families are combining their love of the big smoke with a camping holiday for all the family. It might seem a strange combination but more and more families in the UK are booking summer holidays that combine city breaks with camping, according to European camping operator Eurocamp. Not content to leave children behind or avoid visiting their favourite cities, families are opting to combine both resulting in a substantial increase in enquiries and sales of urban camping family holidays in the past year. This trend signals that parents no longer feel that they have to sacrifice a city break for more child-friendly destinations. By choosing city camping, parents and children can explore the culture a city has to offer but still retreat to a more family-friendly resort whenever they like. Within Eurocamp's parks, kids can make the most of the swimming pools and on-park activities while parents put their feet up and relax. Ruth Start, head of sales and marketing at Eurocamp, says: "It's not surprising that families want to combine a cultural city break with their annual family holiday. Camping in the city gives families the best of both worlds: all the fun of a Eurocamp park with an added cultural and educational value to the holiday." So now there's no reason to swap your dream city break for a family-based resort as now you can have both. The camping operator has parks in major cities across Europe that offer all the fun of a traditional family holiday with the added bonus of being close to the city centre. Choose from parks in Tuscany, Paris, Costa Brava, Sardinia and Croatia among many others Eurocamp's Ljubljana resort in Slovenia is perfectly placed for a camping city break.

With countless sights to see and a host of bars and restaurants, Paris is one of the world's great cities. LIBRA Relationships become focal as the Full Moon will be in your opposite sign on the 12th. For all your positive growth recently comes a chance to put your personal skills to the test. Someone in your life may be feeling left out or that you don't have time for them any more. Making up is something you're good at so you'll waste no time in putting things right. Towards the end of the month, your social life demands more time than you can give. Obligations that you made earlier on in the month start catching up with you.

SCORPIO The last thing you want to do at the moment is face the world, so you'll be happy to retreat until you feel recharged. Let the phone ring, let the emails pile up; you'll want to sort things out internally before dealing with the outside world. Mid month you'll feel like emerging, fresh faced like you've never gone anywhere. You'll find your popularity on the rise and in fact, you'll secretly enjoy the attention. You'll definitely make an impression on the right people, so don't be surprised if you receive an invitation that could open the door to something a lot more interesting.

SAGITTARIUS For much of the summer, you spent your time putting in the ground work, planning and preparing your big career move. While you may have felt like a hamster spinning relentlessly in it's wheel, now the fruits of your labour are ripe for the picking. At the beginning of the month, the production will run smoothly prompting you to start delegating some of your work. Recalling events and relationships from your past will have a profound effect on you making you realise how much they have shaped who you are today.

CAPRICORN The beginning of the month brings you the guidance you've been looking for; an assuring sign that you're on the right track. You've had a gut feeling it will all pay off one day, but now you'll know when and how. However, with the Full Moon landing in the area of home and family on the 12th, your attention will be drawn back to home. You've made a lot of personal sacrifices for the sake of your career recently but those you are closest to may be feeling excluded. As the month progresses, your social life begins to take on a life of its own as you start networking more with like-minded people.

AQUARIUS It wouldn't be unusual for your mind to be racing into overtime, dreaming up new lofty ideas and thinking of ways to advance your life. But for the first week of the month, you've been working the grey matter into overtime as a succession of seemingly innocuous incidents has been opening the door to new opportunities. As much as you like to burst forward, you may not have taken the time to integrate the skills you've recently taken on. From the 24th onwards will make you come face to face with the reality of your closest relationships.

PISCES For the last few weeks of September you may have been trying to hash out a financial deal but given a bit of time, new developments begin to appear. You may have had to keep a delicate balance to keep the deal going but by the time money planet Venus moves into the area of abundance on the 9th, your financial woes will be a thing of the past. While there may still be some tension lingering, you can breathe a sigh of relief as you move forward. As the month draws to a close, you might feel that you have to defend yourself over a personal matter. You may feel caught under the cross fire after the 24th but luckily you have good allies who will not only support you along the way but help as and when they can.

ARIES With so many themes surrounding relationship, partnerships and close one to one connections from the end of last month, it may not always be easy to know exactly where you stand. Of course, the mighty Ram still wants to maintain their individuality, but your interactions with others brings upon an interesting revelation at the beginning of October. Not only will you bring about change in those around you, but they'll help open your eyes to your own habits and behaviour.

TAURUS With all the preparations you've been putting in place since the end of last month, you'll hope your workload lets up soon. There are still a lot of adjustments to be made as you hone your skills but thankfully you will finally begin to see the results of your efforts trickling in slowly. You have longevity in mind with everything you do, so you won't worry if you don't get a windfall overnight. Venus, your planetary ruler moves into your opposite sign on the 9th bringing a certain flavour of passion and intensity into your love life.

GEMINI Love is in the air, and on your mind, and in your heart and undoubtedly in the bedroom! With a planetary pile up in the area of romance it's likely that you've been living on another dimension. Relationship planet Venus, Mercury, Saturn and the Sun has been making you engage on a whole new level. For the single Gemini, it’s likely that you've had your fair share of attention – you may even be spoilt for choice. For those already in a relationship, you'll find that your union will run smooth with a pleasant exchange.

CANCER

The focus will still be on getting the balance between your professional and home life right. A steady chain of changes at work means your domestic arrangement sometimes gets out of kilter but you'll manage to hold on to the reins. The real issue however may be getting your finances in order as you're likely to feel the pinch at the beginning of the month. Of course you want to treat your loved ones and have some form of social life – but it may have to be done on a budget. However, by the end of the month, life will seem to lighten up considerably you’ll want to find an outlet for all the passion you'll be feeling and connecting with someone special makes you feel alive.

LEO

Mighty Mars continues to move through the area of personal development all month making you take a great interest in advancing yourself and making the most of your talents. It’s true that you have a natural ability to lead but push may come to shove at the beginning of the month if you overstep the mark at the office. Know your boundaries and act accordingly otherwise you could set the stage for a showdown to be remembered and that's not how you want to be remembered professionally.

VIRGO Although money matters will be high on your list of priorities at the beginning of the month, you'll be feeling more confident about the state of your bank balance that you have in a while. It's true, you've had to eliminate a lot of activities from your leisure time but you have been realistic about what needed to be done. While this may have not impressed your nearest and dearest, you know it’s for the best in the long run. There's something you've wanted to do for some time and now that you have more confidence about your financial backing, the time is ripe to take your ventures forward.

GONE BUT NOT

JOHN L JOHN WINSTON ONO LENNON, MBE – Born 9th October 1940 Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon’s first skiffle band the Quarrymen evolved into the world famous Beatles. Lennon first met Paul McCartney at the Quarrymen’s second live performance in July 1957 and McCartney was asked to join the band. George Harrison (only 14 years old) joined the band as lead guitarist and Stuart Sutcliffe joined as the bassist and they became “The Beatles” in early 1960. In August of that year they went to Hamburg, Germany for a 48 night residency but desperately needed a drummer and asked Pete Best to join them. They accepted two further residency’s in Hamburg in 1961 & 1962. In 1962 Brian Epstein became The Beatles manager and influenced their early dress code and attitude on stage. When Sutcliffe decided to stay in Hamburg, McCartney took over on bass and drummer Ringo Starr replaced Best. The bands first single “Love Me Do”, released in October 1962 reached number 17 in the British Charts. They recorded their debut album Please Please Me in under 10 hours on 11 February 1963, the year that The Beatles achieved mainstream success in the UK. During their performance at the Royal Variety Show, Lennon made fun of the audience saying “For our next song, I’d like to ask for your help. For the people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands … and the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewellery.” The Beatles made their debut appearance in the US on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 which marked their breakthrough to international stardom. A period of constant touring, moviemaking and song writing followed. In 1965 The Beatles were appointed Members of The British Empire in the Queens Birthday Honours. Lennon grew concerned that fans attending Beatles concerts were unable to hear the music above the screaming fans. He expressed his feeling in the 1965 single “Help”. 44

T FORGOTTEN

LENNON By the following year Lennon was unknowingly introduced to LSD. A few months later, during an interview with the Evening Standard Lennon remarked that “Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink… we’re more popular than Jesus now – I don’t know which will go first, rock and roll or Christianity”. Although virtually unnoticed in England, the comment caused great offence in the US with the burning of Beatles records and threats against Lennon, which contributed to the band’s decision to stop touring. John Lennon and Yoko Ono were married on March 20th 1969 and released a series of 14 lithographs depicting scenes from their honeymoon, 8 of which were deemed indecent and most of which were banned and confiscated. Towards the end of the decade as The Beatles disintegrated, Lennon embarked on a solo career producing iconic songs such as “Give Peace a Chance” and “Imagine”. Lennon and Ono moved to New York in August 1971 and in December released “Happy Xmas (War is Over)”. Lennon co-wrote Fame, David Bowies first US number one and the same year Elton John topped the charts with his cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, featuring Lennon on guitar and back up vocals. With the birth of his second son Sean on 9th October 1975, Lennon took on the role of house husband. After devoting time to his family he released a new album Double Fantasy in 1980. He was murdered three weeks after its release. On 8th December as Lennon and Yoko Ono were returning to their New York apartment, Mark Chapman shot Lennon in the back four times. Earlier that evening Lennon had autographed a copy of Double Fantasy for Chapman. Chapman was sentenced to a prison term of twenty years to life and is currently imprisoned at the Attica Correction Facility in New York, having been denied parole six times. In 2002 a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted him 8th and in 2008 Rolling Stone ranked him the 5th greatest singer of all time. His solo album sales in the US exceed 14 million and he is responsible for 25 number one singles on the US Hot 100 chart. Lennon, along with McCartney, formed one of the most successful song writing partnerships of the 20th Century.

HOW TO: MANAGE A TEST DRIVE & CONDUCT A DEAL You want to sell your car. You've cleaned it up so it looks its best, you've advertised in all the right places and now the buyers are starting to respond. You need to have the right answers and know-how to conduct a deal professionally to get the maximum price from the sale. It all starts on the telephone. Anyone who knows anything about buying a private car will ring up and simply say, "I'm calling about the car." The reason is simple. If you're secretly a dealer in cars, even on a small scale, you'll say, "Which car?" That tells the canny buyer all he needs to know. It will provide reassurance that you're a bona fide individual seller if you simply respond by restating the make and model and ask what details the caller would like to know. Be honest and straightforward in answering questions. Obvious ones you're likely to get are: "Are you the car's owner? How many miles are on the clock and can you be sure these are genuine? Is the car subject to any finance agreements? When was the last service? Why are you selling it?" Answer simply without unnecessary detail. Don't get into hard bargaining over price on the phone. Back down on the price this easily and you may seem like a pushover for bargaining later. Better to simply say that when the potential buyer sees it you feel they'll agree it's fairly priced, and that ultimately you will consider the offers made by all who are coming to inspect it. You may also want to explain what the caller would need to bring in order to test drive the car insurance and licence - and about the payment methods you will accept at the time of a sale. It makes sense to give your full address only to someone who says they want to inspect the car. If in doubt about the caller - and thieves will happily check out and steal very ordinary family cars to order - say you'll need to call them back shortly to arrange a time for a viewing when you are sure you can be there. That way you at least have a phone number if the car gets stolen overnight. If the enquirer is interested but reluctant to commit to an inspection, they may be working their way through a list of possible vehicles. You could offer to take their number and call them back if you have someone else interested in buying so they could still inspect or make an offer if they wanted.

46

PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION ACROSS SPAIN WHEN APPLYING TO ADVERTS

Any sensible buyer is, of course, going to want to see the car. Consider the security of both yourself and the potential buyer. Don't drive it alone to an unfamiliar place to meet a buyer: the practice is for the buyer to come to your home. Allow them to see the car in daylight and have time for a test drive. If the potential buyer is going to test drive the car - and he or she should - make sure you let them know in advance that you will need to see their driving licence and valid third party insurance. They will have this with any comprehensive policy for another vehicle. Check the licence properly and make a note of the driving licence number when you see it. There's no need to be embarrassed. You would expect this if the roles were reversed and, as a law-abiding citizen, would not mind. If you allow someone to drive without having the proper documents, you are committing a crime and could end up in court if there were to be an accident. It also makes sense to make it clear that during any test drive, the driver will take responsibility for any offences, such as speeding. You should never allow a stranger to drive the car without you. This is inviting theft and there's no reason any genuine buyer should want to. Try the garage salesmen's method: invite the buyer to take the driver's seat while you get into the passenger seat. Belt up and explain the controls and only then hand over the keys. If you drive first, the favourite method of swapping over is to let the buyer walk from the passenger side to the driver's side while you shimmy from one seat to the other. If you both have to get out and walk around, take the keys and follow the procedure above. Unlike many showroom sales reps, you should allow any serious potential buyer a proper test drive, rather than five minutes around the block. Half an hour or more would be reasonable so that the car can be driven on different types of road. If asked for a suggested route, you might have worked out something in advance to cover these, and you can explain the reason for your choice. The aim of a test drive is for the buyer to get a feel for the car and check it's what they want. The onus is on them to ensure it works properly and that they're happy with it. They've no comeback if they buy a lemon. And you should want them to feel it's the car for them too, while being discretely circumspect about security. Courtesy, honesty and a helpful attitude are likely to make a buyer feel much better about a car and that nothing is being hidden from them, and that's likely to translate into an offer to buy. 47

Naughty - But Nice !!

A blonde lady motorist was about two hours from the Gold Coast when she was flagged down by a man whose truck had broken down. The man walked up to the car and asked “Are you going to the Gold Coast?” 'Sure,' answered the blonde, 'do you need a lift ?' 'Not for me. I'll be spending the next three hours fixing my truck. My problem is I’ve got two chimpanzees in the back which have to be taken to the Gold Coast Zoo. They're a bit stressed already so I don't want to keep them on the road all day. Could you possibly take them to the zoo for me ? I'll give you $100 for your trouble.” 'I'd be happy to,' said the blonde. So the two chimpanzees were ushered into the back seat of the blonde's car and carefully strapped into their seat belts. Off they went. Five hours later, the truck driver was driving through the heart of the Gold Coast when suddenly he was horrified!! There was the blonde walking down the street and holding hands with the two chimps, much to the amusement of a big crowd. With a screech of brakes he pulled off the road and ran over to the blonde. 'What the heck are you doing here?' he demanded, 'I gave you $100 to take these chimpanzees to the zoo.' 'Yes, I know you did,' said the blonde,' but we had money left over --- so now we're going to SeaWorld

Why is divorce so expensive? Because it's worth it. What do lawyers use for birth control? Their personalities. Why is it so hard for women to find men that are sensitive, caring, and good-looking? Because those men already have boyfriends. What's the difference between a new husband and a new dog? After a year, the dog is still excited to see you. Why do men find it difficult to make eye contact? Breasts don't have eyes. How do you get a sweet little 80-year-old lady to say the F... word? Get another sweet little 80-year-old lady to yell *BINGO*

Watercolour painting is a very popular hobby, often overlooked for the benefits it offers beyond the ability to create a picture. It can encourage you to get out to the countryside, see things you hadn't looked at before and, probably most importantly, spend some "still" time doing something you enjoy. To begin painting in watercolour all you need is a few tubes or pans of paint, a brush and a sheet of paper. Compared with many other media, the process is relatively simple. This journey of discovery and creation can offer some frustrations, but can also be a real pleasure if carried out in a structured and fun way, gradually building up the skills and confidence necessary to create personal masterpieces. Before you get the brush in your hand, here are some pointers: Don't expect instant results. Remember learning to ride a bicycle? You probably fell off a few times. Remember learning to swim? You probably sank towards the bottom a few times. Here's the good news: The potential for physical injury when learning watercolour is less than either of these. The more you practise the better you will get. Gradually build up confidence by doing lots and lots of doodles rather than attempting full-scale paintings. Your progress will be faster. Just start with a few colours. Buy a few tubes of colour to start with - student quality from good manufacturers are fine for practice. When you squeeze it out it will be fresh and clean and ready to go. Remember the unique properties of each of the colours for future use.

At any stage in your painting, if it's not fun, stop painting. Think about all those jobs you would be doing if you weren't painting. Smile and start painting again. Watercolour paints are generally transparent. This means it's not easy to hide mistakes by covering with more paint. When you apply paint on top of dry paint, the effect will be similar to laying coloured sheets of glass on top of each other. Watercolour paint is not impervious when dry. It can and will be loosened with subsequent attacks of the brush and has a wonderful ability to produce mud in direct proportion to the amount of agitation it is given. Buy good paper. Only use paper specifically made for watercolours and treat it with respect. A pack of 20 sheets of good paper will cost about ÂŁ10, so if you end up with a painting, that's a bonus.

Be frugal with brushes. The first three brushes you should have are: rounds numbers 6 and 12, which come to a fine point, and a rigger, which comes to a needle point. The best quality for watercolour is Kolinsky sable. Next best is sable, then sable and synthetic mix then synthetic. Respect your tools. Paint, paper and brushes have all been designed to help the painting process. Watercolour papers have surface texture, the paints give more than colour, the brush has more painting zones than the pointed bit. Use a white palette with flat mixing wells. This will enable you to see the approximate strength of colour as it will be on the paper and will help your observation of some of the chemical properties of the paint.

Are you stuck in a love rut? If you've been single for some time or your current relationship is going nowhere, try looking around your home for the answers. It may sound daft, but according to the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui, your love life can be turned around with a few simple changes to your bedroom. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice believed to utilize the laws of both heaven (astronomy) and earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive Chi or positive energy. A key element of Feng Shui is creating a smooth flow of Chi through your space. When it is blocked, the energy becomes stagnant and you are likely to feel blocked in life, and your enthusiasm for matters of the heart will be low. Balancing and correcting the chi of your bedroom could help to rectify this and bring your relationship back to life. Stephanie Roberts, Feng Shui expert and author of the Fast Feng Shui book series has provided some quick and easy ways to enhance your love life by improving the energy of your home. Make room for love. If you want to attract a new romantic partner or move a casual relationship closer to commitment make sure there is space for that person in your home. Look at your closets, shelves and dressers, especially in the bedroom. If they are all filled to capacity with your own stuff, make clearing some room for your current or future partner a priority. When you are done, take a moment to visualize your loved one's belongings finding a home there. De-clutter your bedroom When your bedroom is cluttered and untidy, the energy in there will be low and slow. Clutter is a sure sign that Chi is stuck, so roll up your sleeves and clean the place up if you want to jump-start your love life. Ring a bell, shake a rattle, or clap your hands loudly around the room to clear out old, stale energy.

Don't work out in the bedroom. When you exercise in the bedroom, or store your sports equipment there, you bring the energy of hard work and exertion into your romance space. Do you want your relationship to feel like a tough workout? If not, move your workout stuff somewhere else and your relationship is likely to move along more smoothly. Remove old relationship energy Go through your home especially your bedroom - and remove anything that reminds you of past failed relationships. This could be an ex-boyfriend's old sweater you find in the cupboard, photographs of you with a previous partner or even a gift that reminds you of a giver with whom you are no longer in love. Remove negative imagery The images with which you surround yourself can have a powerful effect on your love life. Feng Shui clients who complain of difficulty finding romance have often surrounded themselves with images of a person alone. Inappropriate imagery includes anything that represents solitude, loneliness, aggression, hard work, conflict, or disagreement in any way. Open the door to love. Make sure both the front door of your home and the door to your bedroom open easily and completely. Doors that stick, squeak, or only open part way are blocking the flow of romantic energy and opportunity into your home. Move your bed If one side of your bed is against the wall, the person who sleeps on that side may feel confined or disempowered in the relationship. If possible, place the bed so there is equal space on either side, so you and your partner can find equal enjoyment in the relationship. The ideal position of the bed will be on the opposite side of the room from the door, but not directly in line with it. Bring romantic Chi into the bedroom If possible place romantic imagery on the wall opposite the foot of the bed (where you naturally look when lying in bed), and whatever area of the room you first see when you enter. Beautiful, romantic artwork is always good, as are fresh flowers and anything in pairs (such as birds, cherubs, candles, or decorative pillows).

More and more of us are finding space in our life for alternative and natural therapies, increasingly accepting alternative medicine as a viable approach to injury, illness and psychological problems. But now animal owners are turning to these therapies in an attempt to cure problems in their pets. Of course, this approach is taking off in the US with horse owners in particular working with acupuncturists, naturopathy and physiotherapists to cure all manner of ills, but more & more pet owners are looking towards new and different ways to help us keep our pets healthy. There are now private practices springing up offering the kind of therapies that most of us probably wouldn't fork out for ourselves - kinesiology, reflexology, aromatherapy, colour healing and even reiki. These animal therapy sessions see practitioners working closely with animals including dogs, horses and cats, taking information from owners on the specific issues they have had before deciding which particular therapy would best suit the case. These sessions can help to heal injuries, improve muscle tone, relieve respiratory, urinary and skin problems, solve psychological issues such as spooking and depression and even simply improve the relationship and communication between animal and owner. Massages are offered for both dogs and horses and, like with human massage, can be used to diagnose and relieve areas of muscle tension. Many practitioners also offer training sessions in which owners can learn to treat their own pets, again improving the relationship between man and beast. Aromatherapy is surprisingly effective in animals. Indeed considering animals' innate ability to know what foods are edible and which aren't it stands to reason that they can also 'choose' plant oils and extracts which will benefit their condition. Likewise reiki treatments, with their light touch and ability to promote relaxation, are ideal for animals with personality and communication issues or those who are easily upset meanwhile reflexology, applied to legs, feet and ears can be beneficial in posture and co-ordination. Again, any of these treatments can be taught, at some expense, to owners. Now it seems somewhat strange to imagine animals being treated in this way, but in a time when our pets are considered a member of the family, we take out medical insurance and pay thousands in vets bills, pet portraits and even burials and cremations to pay respects to the pets when they've passed it isn't really a surprise that, as we start to pay more attention to our own bodies and spend time and money relieving stress and finding new ways to fight injury and illness, we have started to do the same for our animals. In fact, in sports such as horse racing massage and other alternative treatments have long been successfully used in animals that can be worth literally millions to their owners and to the punters backing them. 56
