In Granada and Cordoba The Festival of the Crosses is celebrated on May 3rd. Large crosses adorn parishes and the local’s party in the streets. The festival is believed to date back to the Byzantine Empress Saint Helena for the cross on which Jesus died. The popular traditions connected to the festival certainly originate from pagan traditions brought to Spain by the Roman Empire. The legend is that Emperor Constantine I in the sixth year of his reign, confronted the barbarians on the banks of the Danube, in a battle where victory was believed to be impossible because of the great size of the enemy army. One night, Constantine had a vision of a cross in the sky, and by it the words “In hoc signo vincis” (With this sign, you shall be victorious). The emperor had a cross made and put it at the front of his army, which won an easy victory over the enemy. Constantine was baptized as a Christian and gave orders to construct Christian churches. He sent his mother Saint Helena, to Jerusalem in search of the True Cross, the cross on which Jesus died.

In Cordoba the Fiesta de los Patios is a competition held on the 2nd week of May to find the city’s most beautiful flower covered patio. Due to the hot dry climate homes in Cordoba were built with a central patio going back as far as the days of the Romans. Filling this central patio with plants and water features was a way to keep the homes cool. It was realised that these hidden treasures were just to good to be kept tucked away and so once a year every Cordoban opens up their home and patio for neighbours and tourists alike. It is a city‐wide search for the best designed patio. This festival dates back to 1918 to honour the locals’ efforts to retain and maintain these traditional areas in the home. Awards were given to those with the best patios. The Fiesta de los Patios is now sponsored by the Cordoba City Hall. The residents open their homes and this is your chance to see the care they have lavished on their plants and flowers. The patios are a spectacular visual feast with colourful flowers, stone mosaics, ceramic decorations and water features. You can get a map from the Tourism Office showing lists of all the patios that participate in the Festival de los Patios each year.

This is the largest and grandest fair in Cordoba held at the end of May. It starts off with a grand firework display followed by nine days of music, Flamenco performances, processions of equestrian guards, carnival games and rides, and of course fair food. Booths known as “casetas” provide food and music to help celebrate the week. The fair is held at the municipal El Arenal fairgrounds just on the outskirts of the city where thousands of lights illuminate the fairgrounds. A bus takes people to and from the City Centre and the fairgrounds. In the city the fair is celebrated in the squares and streets by thousands of masked people. The Feria de Cordoba is a time for music, drinking, dancing and eating.

San Isidro is the patron saint of Madrid and every May a week of festivities are held in the city. Legend has it that San Isidro was a poor peasant farmer and he and his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza were very popular due to their generosity, donating food to the poor. This is Madrid’s biggest fiesta and has been held since 1947. The festival begins with the Mayor’s speech on the Friday afternoon prior to the 15th and ends with the popular Cocido Madrileno or public cookout. San Isidro marks the start of the capital’s bullfighting season and attracts the top bullfighters and bull breeders. On the 15th the people of Madrid make a pilgrimage to San Isidro’s meadow to celebrate his day and to drink the holy water of his fountain in his hermitage’s patio. Many people dress up in the traditional costumes called “Chulapo or Chulapa”. The ladies dresses are made of fancy lace and they wear a headdress and shawl, while the men wear a chequered cap, waistcoat and a handkerchief around their necks. During the day you can sample the traditional Barquillos or angels bread, some dipped in chocolate. In the Plaza Mayor you can enjoy various concerts and traditional dancing during the 9 day festival.

Tapas is not a particular type of food, but a way of eating it. Tapas is synonymous with Spanish cuisine and have evolved through Spanish history by incorporating ingredients and influences from many different cultures and countries. In Spain dinner is usually served between 9.00 & 11.00 p.m., therefore, Spaniards often eat tapas in the time between finishing work and having dinner. The serving of tapas is designed to encourage conversation between people and often involves bar hopping, taking a single tapa in each. The word “tapa” is a lid or cover and in the early days of tapas, a slice of cheese or ham was given with your drink and placed over your drink. There are a few explanations as to why this was done including to keep out the flies, to hide the smell of the bad wine or to keep the wind from blowing your drink everywhere. Tapa is invariably a small dish of something on the menu. They may be cold such as mixed olives and cheese or warm such as chopitas, which are battered fried baby squid. In select bars tapas has evolved into an entire sophisticated cuisine. It is common for a bar or small restaurant to have upto eight or twelve different kinds of tapas. Often one or more of the choices is seafood such as anchovies, sardines or mackerel. One or more types of bread are usually available. In certain bars if you order a drink often a tapa will be served for free. There are many tapa competitions throughout Spain and the National Tapas Competition is celebrated every year in November. Various schools from around the world come to Spain annually to compete for the best tapa concept.

Here are some examples of tapa: Albondigas: meatballs with sauce.

Bacalao: salted cod loin sliced very thinly, usually served with bread and tomatoes.

Calamares: rings of battered squid.

Carne mechada: slow cooked, tender beef.

Cojonudo: a slice of Spanish chorizo with a fried quail egg over a slice of bread.

Patatas bravus: fried potato dices served with a spicy tomato sauce.

Pincho moruno: a stick with spicy meat made of pork, lamb or chicken.

Setas al Ajillo: fresh mushrooms sautéed with olive oil and garlic.

Solomillo al whisky: fried pork scallops, marinated using whisky, brandy or white wine and olive oil.

Tortilla de patatas (Spanish omelette): a type of omelette con‐ taining fried chunks of potatoes and sometimes onion.

Tortillitas de camarones: battered prawn fritters.

Every visitor to Spain should be sure to “go for tapas”!

El Hierro is the smallest of the Canary Islands and is usually ignored by the conventional tourist. It is mountainous, volcanic and bathed in transparent waters, ideal for lovers of diving. In La Resinga, Frontera and Timijiraque there are diving centres perfectly equipped for practising and teaching diving. They also organise trips to places of interest in the islands crystal clear waters. Paragliding is another popular activity on the island, particularly in El Valle de El Golfo where there are the ideal conditions for this sport. In 2000, El Hierro was designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve with 60% of its territory protected to preserve its natural and cultural diversity. The coast of El Hierro is rocky and very harsh with natural bays and pools, perfect for swimming. Most bathing areas are rocky pools where you can find the famous black volcanic sand. The El Hierro cuisine is tasty and as for any island, fish is an important ingredient.

Fish can be fried, boiled or grilled with a typical garnish being ‘papas arrugadas’ (wrinkled potatoes). Rabbits and goats are also typical in local meals. The famous “quesadillas” are a sweet pastry based on cheese. Festivities are very traditional and popular on the island. One of the most important of which is the Virgen de los Reyes held every four years. It is held on the first Saturday in July and the next will take place this year. This festivity lasts nearly a month, as the Virgins image visits the most important villages on the island. The image of Virgen de los Reyes is carried for 28.7 km from her chapel to Valverde, accompanied by dancers in red and white costumes and multi coloured hats. Although the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro is a true paradise waiting to be discovered.

The facts: Healthy Alternative to Smoking Can an E‐Cigarette really replace a real cigarette? The answer is that it all depends on the product. There are many kinds of E‐cigarettes on the market, but very few of them are of the same quality as eGo‐T. This product is world renowned and is only now beginning to find its place in Spain. The eGo‐T should not be compared with a typical plastic inhaler from the pharmacy or other cheap e‐cigarette models on the market. Here is a top product, electronical engineering of the highest quality, not to mention the taste and smoke, which in this case is steam. You can not tell the difference between an eGo T and a Tobacco Cigarette. Is steam vapour from E‐Smoking bad for the lungs? The answer is NO. Water in the lungs is caused most often from a disease called pulmonary edema, where body fluids (blood plasma) enters the lungs and therefore has nothing to do with water or steam. The human body is designed so that water and steam in such small amounts can accumulate in the lungs but will be naturally excreted from the body. Is E‐Smoking as dangerous as regular smoking? We have produced our e‐liquids in the EU, we are fully aware of what our e‐liquid contents are 70% VG (vegetable glycerine) 30% PG (propylene glycol) Nicotine and flavours are ap‐ proved for food industry, other stores and online shops are selling cheaply produced fluids from China and other Asian countries. In terms of a destination for a home in the sun, the Spanish Costa del Sol has it all: sun, sea, golf courses, beaches, endless cafes serving full English breakfasts and plenty of English‐speaking locals. In fact, there are perhaps far too many English‐speaking locals in the form of ex‐pats for many people considering investing in Spanish property. Research shows that many Britons are snubbing the chance of buying homes in Spain simply because it is too full of their countrymen. However, the "Little Britain on the Costas" culture is unlikely to push Spain off its number one spot for UK overseas property buyers. Four in 10 mortgage advisers still see Spain as the best long‐term market for investment, ahead of France and Portugal. "Spain's popularity with Britons is both its main advantage and its biggest downfall," says Gerry Bell, British mortgages abroad, GE Money Home Lending. Most are attracted by the climate, but many drawn to the Costas because they know others who have settled there or are familiar with the area from their holidays. It has all the conveniences that you would find in Britain and you can buy a can of beans in every supermarket. Others see it as a good long‐term investment. However, now very much a Little Britain on the Costas, many property investors are looking elsewhere for a destination with its own distinct culture and identity rather than one that is so heavily influenced by a big ex‐pat population.

Research from GE Money Home Lending reveals that Spain still reigns as the top destination for holiday home owners buying abroad. However, an overwhelming 82 per cent of Britons who choose not to buy property there claim it was because of the English pub‐frequenting, fish‐and‐chip‐loving culture of ex‐pat communities in the country. The survey asked 1,000 customers and 100 mortgage brokers where they would consider buying property abroad and what factors would influence them when choosing where to buy. Overall, Spain remains the top spot, with people citing its good climate, cheap travel and bargain property prices. However, the lack of culture is becoming an increasingly big turn off. France and Italy came second and third respectively in the popularity stakes, specifically picked out for their attractive culture as well as convenient travel links. It appears that Anglo‐French relations are still floundering, however, with over half of those who wouldn't buy property in France blaming their dislike of French people. Germany has the same problem with 42 per cent being put off by the people. No negative comments were made about Italians or Portuguese.

Good News for the UK as the latest GDP figures shows it dodged a "triple dip" recession. Data shows that GDP grew by .3% in the first quarter of 2013, thankfully Britain's dominant services sector provided the relief by growing .6% during the first quarter and this accounts for 70% of UK GDP. If you were to strip out the numbers you would see the construction sector shrank by 2.5%. Providing support to the growth were sales of motor vehicles and a bounce back in North Sea oil production. Despite the relief for Mr Osborne who had been under tremendous focus it you looked closely at the UK economy you will notice that it is still 2.6% smaller than before the crash of 2008 so it still has a long recovery path ahead and will not be helped by the fact that real wages in the UK have been falling for the last 5 years. At times like this you need solid direction and support from your bank and the latest information from the Bank of England policy committee members shows there is a split in views and with inflation expected to rise above 3% before the end of the year the new governor (when he takes up his post) has a tricky job to do.

Across the Eurozone both Spain and France have seen an increase in the number of unemployed and the pain is particularly harsh here as the number of people without work rose to a staggering 27.2% or 6.2miilion people looking for work. With the possibility of further cuts being introduced its very difficult to clearly see any light however whilst our economy shrank by 1.9% last year we can try to take some comfort form the fact that the pace of contraction did slow during the first quarter of 2013. Finding positive news for Spain comes from the most least likely source when we hear that Bankia has returned to profit and posted a 74million euro profit for the first three months of the year. In France unemployment rose again for the 23rd month in a row and that is bad news for Francoise Hollande whose approval ratings are already at a low. Thank fully some form of semblance is returning to Italy where a government is being formed that should continue to support the needs of the ECB and IMF. In Cyprus parliament by now should have voted to accept the terms of the bailout needed and Greece continues to stay on course to receive the next tranche of money. Always a nice indicator is the yield on Spanish and Italian 10 year government bonds and during the last month we have seen these rates falling so god news for both these countries.

Not much to report from the states where the Federal Reserve continue to buy mortgage backed securities and maintain low interest rates but here's one for you did you know that South Koreas economy expanded at its fastest pace in two years but that was also aided by the government producing a extra $15.5 billion budget and stimulus package.

Gold has also been in the news this last month with severe price drops however during the last couple of days of April it had started to recover some of its earlier losses. Exchange rates during the last month

In Spain the succession law restricts your freedom to leave your assets to anyone you want to. The law is designed to protect the family and provide for the children. It requires that a parent leave two‐thirds of his estate to his children, by passing even the surviving spouse. When someone dies leaving children, the estate is divided into three equal parts. One third must be left to surviving children equally. Another third must also be left to the children but the testator can decide how to divide it. The final third of the estate can be freely willed to anyone. A surviving spouse is allowed to keep all assets acquired before the marriage, half of the goods acquired during the marriage and all personal gifts or inheritances which have come directly to them. When a foreigner owning a Spanish property dies, the law of the country of nationality will govern the disposal of any Spanish assets. A British person, could therefore, bequeath his assets as he wishes, however, the inheritors will need to pay the Spanish succession tax. This only applies if the foreigner has an existing foreign Will or Spanish Will. If he dies intestate Spanish law will be applied to his assets in Spain. But a complication then arises as British law states that the disposition of real estate is governed by the law of the country where the property is located, therefore, the Spanish law says that UK law applies, while UK law says that Spanish law applies.

British people can make a Spanish Will bequeathing their Spanish property to whomever they like and the Spanish Registrar of Will has in the past accepted this. The only requirement enforced by Spain is the payment of Spanish succession tax on assets located in Spain. This sounds simple enough but if you cut out one or more of your children in your Spanish Will they could contest it and win. One way around this problem is to transfer the title of the property to your chosen heir while you are still alive. Although this will mean paying succession tax at that point but will achieve what you want. Another way around the problem is to leave a widow or widower a “usufruct” in the family house. An “usufruct” is a life interest in the house, rather than leave them their half of the property, which can reduce Spanish succession tax. By leaving your spouse a “usufruct”, the ownership of your house can pass to the children, while your spouse can live in the property free for the rest of their lifetime. Always seeks independent advice to ensure you understand all the details and possible complications involved.

EPIC

DIRECTED BY: Chris Wedge STARRING: Beyonce Knowles Colin Farrell Josh Hutcherson Amanda Seyfried Johnny Knoxville Aziz Ansari RELEASE DATE: May 24 2013

Epic tells the story of an ongoing battle deep in the forest between the forces of good and the forces of evil. When a teenage girl, Mary Katherine, finds herself magically transported into this secret universe, she must band together with a rag‐tag team of fun and whimsical characters (the ‘Leaf Men’) in order to save their world, and ours, from the evil spider Queen Tara.

There are several reasons why fans of ghouls will be rather interested in the latest work from one of the finest thriller scribes working today. For starters it’s a dark tale of death, mystery, and unease, although the 'plus' points go well beyond those alone. Already heralded as a film in the making, The Shining Girls comes from the deliciously devious mind of Lauren Beukes. A serial killer yarn with a mind as twisted as the plot eventually becomes, the story straddles eras as it recounts some unarguably unsettling events Stateside, with the author's impeccable talent for description ensuring we're immersed from the first paragraph. Chicago,1931. In the midst of the Great Depression drifters are commonplace across the U.S. Not all of them are like Harper Curtis, mind, a violent deviant who chances upon an innocuous looking house. Unbeknownst to him, there's a secret behind this address that really shouldn't be unearthed, meanwhile the residents are equally unaware of the plan this vagrant begins to hatch. Secrets and lies abound, the despicable character starts stalking young ladies he refers to as 'shining girls', a pursuit that takes the reader through several decades. Soon, or perhaps more accurately after several riveting chapters, we find ourselves in the Windy City circa 1992, where we meet the unfortunate Kirby Mazrachi. Something of a survivor, her experiences will immediately ring alarm bells for anyone who paid full attention during the preceding pages. After a brutal attempt on her life, the woman in question continues to struggle with the unfortunate hand fate deemed fit to deal. Plagued by memories of her attacker, an ex‐homicide reporter named Dan seems to be her only ally in a world full of paranoia. He originally covered her case, and despite the investigators giving up on uncovering any further clues this plucky journalist is hell bent on offering all the support Kirby needs. That's largely because he fancies her, but nevertheless such chivalry deserves at least some commendation. As the pair begin to dig deeper into the events that nearly put an end to any dreams she had of a future remarkable, terrifying, and seemingly impossible facts begins to surface. Before too long other victims are located, many of whom weren't quite so lucky, and all the evidence begins to suggest one sadistic psychopath could be behind all the killings. With so many years in between the heinous acts, though, logic dictates theories like this should be cast aside. The problem is, when there are no other explanations it's difficult to put such thoughts from your mind. Engrossing, and highly original stuff, we wholly advise trying to come up with your own rationale from April 25th.

Once it was all about cavities and receding gums, but today's consumers are looking for a whiter than white smile in the quest for an ever youthful look. Latest research from Mintel finds that when it comes to oral health, stained or yellowing teeth ranks top of consumers health concerns. Indeed, today, over four in ten Brits (41%) are concerned about the colour of their teeth. Meanwhile, just a quarter of consumers are worried about real health issues such as cavities and caries (27%) and receding gums (25%). "Today many people regard their smile as something that can be fixed cosmetically and not through oral hygiene. The fact that more people are concerned about the colour of their teeth than real health issues such as cavities and gum rescission is a worry. There is a real danger that this could result in people neglecting genuine health issues such as tongue and gum health," comments Alexandra Richmond, senior health & beauty analyst at Mintel. "The boundaries between health and beauty are increasingly blurred and this is leading to confusion among consumers. Just as many young people will associate a tan with good health, a bright white smile is being associated with good oral hygiene," adds Alexandra Richmond. And the desire for white teeth is not just the preserve of the young. While half of Brits (47%) aged 16‐24 say they are concerned about the colour of their teeth as many as a third (33%) of 55‐64 year olds also admit to being concerned about this issue. "Alongside wrinkles, teeth are another key indicator of age. Agelessness is one of the major social issues that has been gathering pace over the past decade. Whilst kids are getting older younger, older adults are refusing to accept their age," says Alexandra Richmond.

Blinding sales for teeth whitening product The market for whitening products is thriving as celebrities such as Katie Price and Simon Cowell help drive the desire for pearly whites. Over the last 2 years alone, sales of whitening toothpaste have increased by a dazzling 15% rising from £55 million in 2006 to £63 million in 2008, accounting for 22% of sales in the toothpaste sector. Meanwhile, dental ancillaries, that include teeth whitening kits have enjoyed growth of 13% over the same period. "While laser whitening or tray bleaching are professional treatments that require commitment and a deep purse, sales of whitening toothpastes are thriving, appealing to those who want whiter teeth but cannot afford to spend the money on having their teeth professionally whitened. With budgets becoming tighter, non‐professional treatments are set to benefit from even greater sales," adds Alexandra Richmond.

Spring is the traditional time for embarking on a thorough clean‐up ‐ both inside and outside the home. But dig a little deeper and you might be surprised to discover the real cost of closing the cupboard through the winter months with a half‐hearted pledge to sort it out later: the hidden piles of clothes from seasons gone by. Research by home furnishing experts IKEA reveals that on average Brits are hoarding £1,212 worth of clothes. Despite having wardrobes filled with the latest fashions, 40% of people claim to be bored with their togs and only three per cent say they feel excited about choosing a different outfit each day. A third also admit to wearing only 10% of their outfits, resulting in a shameful £1,090 worth of clothes left hanging on the rails, untouched, unloved and unwanted. Almost half of the nation ‐ 45% ‐ describes the state of their wardrobe as 'unorganised chaos' and nearly a quarter admit to grabbing the first thing that comes to hand each morning with 23% saying they wear the same old trusted outfits over and over again. But a simple furniture reorganisation could be the key to rediscovering our clothing caches without splashing out yet more dosh on designer creations. Bedrooms expert Pippa Swain says: Our research shows that despite having a wealth of outfits to choose from, Brits are often left feeling frustrated and uninspired by the contents of their wardrobes.

Instead of buying new clothes, money‐savvy Brits should invest in storage solutions that help rediscover the items they once loved.

Celebrity stylist Grace Woodward has teamed up with IKEA to give hoarders some top tips on how to tame their wardrobes: 1. Clarity is Key Clear out your wardrobe every year for the coming season: if it doesn't fit or can't be worked into an outfit, then get rid of it. Put the things you simply can't bear to part with in a box and if you haven't missed them in four weeks, put them in the charity pile. 2. Hang with Pride Once you have de‐cluttered, the next step is reorganising. It's important to make the most of the space within your wardrobe and never overfill ‐ you don't have to hang everything. 3. You Are Your Canvas

Making a great outfit is like painting ‐ using colour and texture to create something interesting. If you know instantly where to reach in and grab those little extras like accessories, then your look becomes your own unique creation. Drawers and dividers are not only amazing space savers but they help you stay organised with separate spots for belts, scarves and tights. 4. Kick Off Shoe racks and boxes are the key to footloose and fancy free self‐ expression ‐ and a must for good shoe care too. Boxes with clear fronts help keep dust away and make it easy to choose the right pair for your outfit.

Grace advises: "Just as you have many different roles to play in a day, so does your wardrobe. It needs to organise your clothes, hang them properly, show off your best bits and keep all those things you'd rather forget cleverly hidden away. A good wardrobe fitted properly with clever de‐cluttering solutions can transform your clothes from shabby to chic in no time.

The internet has revolutionised the way people communicate with each other and social networking sites have facilitated a far greater reach for word of mouth. Nearly 60% of Brits log into their Facebook accounts and 13% sign into Twitter every day. New research has revealed that we increasingly use the internet to find out about beauty products, with 34% logging onto social networking sites to help make our selections. The Mintel report found that almost 10 million people visit beauty and personal care websites with just under nine million resorting to Google when they want to find out more, although Facebook is the preferred vehicle to express thoughts or opinions for almost 75%. And it appears Britain's voucher culture is also playing a part in online behaviour as consumers try to make their budgets stretch, evidenced by the fact that 33% of us logged onto beauty brands to take advantage of special offers and free samples. The research found that just over four in 10 of us interact with a brand online for discounts or information on sales or money‐ saving tips. There are many degrees of intimacy in friendships and associations and it appears that the role of social networking sites is encouraging a greater degree of intimacy between consumer and brand ‐ and stretching its definition. Just over one in three people engages with or shares their thoughts on beauty and personal care brands they already use but while friendship may be based on trust, a similar number only friend a brand or share their thoughts on it to save money or get free samples. Women are not only more involved in the beauty arena, they are also more likely than men to prove their loyalty online. They are also more adventurous, with 20% keen to try out new products, compared to just 13% of men.

Interestingly, tribal behaviour also motivates online visitors with just over a third of those already owning branded products, 22% want their friends to know they like the make and 14% wanted to be associated with it. An estimated 6.6 million adults are beauty and personal care enthusiasts, around 12.2 million rarely experiment and prefer to stick to what they know and more than half fall somewhere in the middle.

Although almost a third of enthusiasts keep their negative thoughts and feelings to themselves, instead showing voting with their fingers to unfriend or unlike a brand. Mintel's Alexandra Richmond says: People use social media to share what they think ‐ not just their friends and family. In fact, sharing their thoughts on beauty products with friends, family or colleagues is a key reason that people talk about beauty and personal care brands, both online and offline. This illustrates the strength of word of mouth and the internet plays a key role in enabling people to influence other people's purchases whilst at the same time providing brands with valuable feedback. The 'friendship' between consumer and brand is not based on positive reciprocity, but on an assumption that they will be rewarded by the brand for being friends with it, liking it or sharing their thoughts and opinions on it. Furthermore, continuous access to the internet means that people can share their instant reactions and emotions to the things that they see, hear and experience. Looking forward, this is likely to place more pressure on brands to ensure a good experience all of the time or to respond swiftly in instances where the brand has failed to meet customer expectations.

A fascinating insight into the workings of the Royal Household ‐ and the opportunity to find out if one of your ancestors served the Royal Family ‐ is now available online. Previously only accessible at Windsor Castle by appointment, these rarely viewed records can now be viewed on the net in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, thanks to the Royal Archives and family history website findmypast.co.uk The detailed collection covers royal residences across the UK, including Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and St James's Palace ‐ and includes 50,000 staff records from the reign of King Charles II to King George V between 1660 and 1924. With details such as name, occupation, age, length of service and salary, the records paint a vivid picture of life in a Royal court, revealing what it takes to run a Royal Household and the wide range of duties involved. A reigning monarch typically had 1,000 staff with the Lord Chamberlain's Department the largest, with around 700 staff responsible for the Court's ceremonial and social life. Employees included the above stairs servants such as pages, craftsmen, chaplains, physicians, musicians, watermen and Yeomen of the Guard. But it also included a number of unusual occupations such as Chocolate Maker to the Queen, Necessary Woman to the Corridor and Entrance Hall, Keeper of the Lions in the Tower, Moletaker, Master of the Game of Cock Fighting, Strewer of Herbs and Laundress of the Body Linen. Professor Robert Bucholz, Royal Household expert at Loyola University of Chicago, says: The court at Whitehall, St James's and Buckingham Palace was not just the seat of the most powerful government in the world; it was also the political, social and cultural centre of the nation. Thus the records of Royal Household staff are the record of their service to the British Crown. Professional historians have long had access to these records, but now ordinary citizens from around the world have the opportunity to track down ancestors here.

Indeed, even I ‐ an American of German and Mexican descent ‐ found a namesake: one George Buckholtz, livery pony boy, undoubtedly part of the German contingent serving at the later Hanoverian Court. The records also reveal charming details of life in the Royal Household. Queen Anne, for example, had such a penchant for barley cream and posset (a traditional dessert) that she engaged two women of the Bedchamber to make them and other 'spoon meats' for £60 per annum. And they highlight the varied lengths of service amongst household staff. Many climbed through the ranks and dedicated their lives to the British Monarchy, some from as young as three years old, up to 96 years of age. Unsurprisingly, salaries varied dramatically between roles and sexes and depended on the specific roles held. For example, the chief cook received around £400 per year, plus an annual lodging allowance of £30, while a kitchen maid earned just £25 per year plus £20 for lodgings. Debra Chatfield, family historian at findmypast.co.uk, says: People across the globe continue to be fascinated by the British Royal Family, as well as the relationship between 'upstairs' and 'downstairs' life. In the year of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, this is the perfect opportunity to explore your family history and discover whether you have an ancestor who worked for the Royal Household. To be able to view these records online for the first time is incredibly exciting ‐ not only for people worldwide with an interest in the British Monarchy, but also for anyone wanting to confirm family rumours about connections to those who worked for the Royal Household. With such a broad range of trades and occupations spanning nearly four centuries of Royal Household history, almost anyone could find they're connected to those who served the Crown!

CELIBACY Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances. While attending a harmony for couples weekend, Dave and his partner, Ann, listened to the instructor declare, "It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other." He then addressed the men, "Can you name and describe your wife's favourite flower?" Dave leaned over, touched Ann's arm gently, and whispered, "It's Homepride, isn't it?" Thus began Dave's life of celibacy.

SIMPLE TRUTH AND NOTHING BUT THE SIMPLE TRUTH!! SIMPLE TRUTH 1 Lovers help each other undress before sex. However after sex, they always dress on their own. Moral of the story: In life, no one helps you once you're screwed. SIMPLE TRUTH 2 When a lady is pregnant, all her friends touch the stomach and say, "Congrats". but, none of them touch the man's penis and say, "Good job". Moral of the story: Hard work is never appreciated. FIVE RULES TO REMEMBER IN LIFE 1. Money cannot buy happiness, but it's more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than on a bicycle. 2. Forgive your enemy, but remember the asshole's name. 3. If you help someone when they're in trouble, they will remember you when they're in trouble again. 4. Many people are alive only because it's illegal to shoot them. 5. Alcohol does not solve any problems, but then neither does milk.

GOD ENJOYS A GOOD LAUGH! There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black: 1. He called everyone brother 2. He liked Gospel 3. He didn't get a fair trial But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish: 1. He went into His Father's business 2. He lived at home until he was 33 3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his Mother was sure He was God But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian: 1. He talked with His hands 2. He had wine with His meals 3. He used olive oil But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian: 1. He never cut His hair 2. He walked around barefoot all the time 3. He started a new religion But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was an American Indian: 1. He was at peace with nature 2. He ate a lot of fish 3. He talked about the Great Spirit But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish: 1. He never got married.. 2. He was always telling stories. 3. He loved green pastures. But the most compelling evidence of all ‐ 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman: 1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was virtually no food 2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it 3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because there was still work to do!

The man with an awful lot of money, some genuinely charming right‐hand people, and the famed 'Finger of Fear' is back on the BBC. Needless to say, then, we're looking forward to what the new series will bring. There's a duality to The Apprentice that's largely missing in other reality TV shows. For starters, most of the contestants ‐ to date at least ‐ have been arrogant, ignorant, and generally not cut out for positions of responsibility. Many an evening has been spent poking fun at their lack of creative spark and business acumen; two assets entrepreneurs really need in order to make a real mark on the world. On the flip side, though, you can't help but warm to Lord Sugar. He's filthy rich, yes, but there's still a neo‐Del Boy mentality to his outlook. Despite the Savile Row suits (or similarly expensive items), he has never forgotten his roots as a market trader, long before striking it big with Amstrad and the like. One only wonders what he must really think when confronted with illogical jumped‐up go‐getters who think hard work is deciding which lunch to cancel. We've also got the added bonus of Nick Hewer and Karren Brady. Of course the latter isn't quite the gem that Margaret Mountford was ‐ she's the lawyer and businesswoman who used to boast some of the funniest expressions of exacerbation on British television, but left the show to pursue a PhD in Papyrology (the study of ancient literature relating to Greece, Rome, and Egypt). Nevertheless, the current female member of Sugar's entourage still brings plenty to the episodes in a 'what will they come up with next' kind of way.

If she's delightfully cynical and subtly scathing, then Hewer takes this to another level. As we've seen from his role as host of Channel 4's Countdown , he's a genuinely witty guy, and rather savvy. A background in public relations means he understands how to keep several sides happy at once and communicating successfully, not to mention the need to combine great ideas with accountability and measurability. Hence the reason he constantly looks ready to maim the less conscientious and easily distracted contestants. Of course our entertainment could be the bane of Sugar's existence, so for his sake we should hope for a bunch of able, well‐mannered and dedicated candidates for the new series. That probably won't happen, though, as all signs point to another band of cut‐ throat egomaniacs willing to step over a family member's corpse for a shot at the fabled apprenticeship on offer. It's not a nice picture of society, but there are no arguments that it makes for a riveting hour every week ‐ filled with laughs, amazement, and hilarious horror. Bring on the boardroom then.

Lamborghini 2013 Veneno

In the year of its 50th anniversary Automobili Lamborghini is presenting an extremely exclusive model at the Geneva Motor Show 2013. Only three unique units of the Lamborghini Veneno will be built and sold. Its design is consistently focused on optimum aerodynamics and cornering stability, giving the Veneno the real dynamic experience of a racing prototype, yet it is fully homologated for the road. With a maximum output of 552 kW / 750 hp, the Veneno accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds and the top speed for this street-legal racing car stands at 355 km/h. It is priced at three million Euros plus tax - and all three units have already been sold to customers. The Lamborghini Veneno features a twelve-cylinder power unit with a displacement of 6.5 litres, an extremely fast-shifting 7-speed ISR transmission with 5 driving modes and permanent all-wheel drive, as well as a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units. Above all, however, the Veneno benefits from the very special expertise that Automobili Lamborghini possesses in the development and execution of carbon-fibre materials - the complete chassis is produced as a CFRP monocoque, as is the outer skin of this extreme sports car. The inside, too, features innovative, Lamborghini-patented materials such as Forged Composite and Carbon Skin. Fully in keeping with the tradition of the brand, the name of the Veneno originates from a legendary fighting bull. Veneno is the name of one of the strongest and most aggressive fighting bulls ever. He is also famous for being one of the fastest bulls in the history of bullfighting. His name became popular in 1914, when he fatally wounded the famous torero Jose Sanchez Rodriguez during the bullfight in the arena Sanlucar de Barrameda's, Andalusia, Spain.

The entire front end of the Lamborghini Veneno has been laid out for perfect airflow and down force. The front end works as a large aerodynamic wing. Large channels guide the air to the outlets in the front hood and in front of the windshield, as well as to the front wheels. Characteristic for Lamborghini is the Y shape of the angular headlamps that reach well into the fenders as well as the scissor doors. Just like the front end, the rear of the Veneno has also been optimized for underbody aerodynamics and high speed cornering stability. The smooth underbody transitions into a substantial diffuser framing the four sizable exhaust pipes divided by a splitter to increase the level of down force peak. Large openings serve to ventilate the engine bay and manage the airflow to the rear wing, with the only sealed area at the rear being reserved for the license plate. The rear lights, including brake lights, indicator lights and fog lights, pick up the Y theme as well. The engine cover sports six wedge-shaped openings, with the focus here, too, on optimum dissipation of heat from the engine. The engine cover extends into a large central "shark" fin, which improves efficiency during braking and rear-end stability, by delivering additional downforce at high yaw angles and thus increasing the high-speed cornering performance. The Lamborghini Veneno celebrates its first public appearance at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle on show is the number 0, the Lamborghini test vehicle. Its future has not been determined yet, but it will allow Lamborghini to continue its activity of testing and innovation, both on the road and on the race track. The trilogy made of three unique vehicles will be produced in the course of the year 2013 and handed over to their future owners.

Eating out is firmly ingrained in British behaviour despite the tougher climate. But the rise of discounting and vouchers, such as two‐for‐one and 50% off deals, means these have now become a central feature of the restaurant sector. In fact, discounts and vouchers are such an essential of eating out today that 17% of UK adults say they would stop going to a restaurant if it called time on discounting. New research reveals that more than half of Brits regularly use discount vouchers and a third of them use them most of the time. The trend has been recognised by operators, with 45% expecting discounting to become more widespread in future. Almost half of businesses using these initiatives report a rise of up to five per cent in sales, directly attributable to these offers. A further 51% believe that footfall would slow if they dropped the discounts. Half of all consumers surveyed for the Allegra's Project Restaurant study in association with Barclays claim they eat out with as often as they did a year ago, while 13% say they eat out more often. However, more than a quarter of respondents are trading down, visiting lower priced restaurants to save money. The report, which surveyed over 12,000 consumers about their eating‐out habits and close to 300 industry leaders about their expectations for the industry, forecasts the sector will grow by 5.6% this year to a total of £11.1bn. Mike Saul, Head of Hospitality & Leisure at Barclays, says: Eating out has become part and parcel of many consumers' lives, and is no longer a rare treat. But as discretionary spend continues to come under pressure, consumers are taking active steps to switch their spending towards more affordable restaurants. As a result there has been a clear shift by operators to meet these price sensitive needs. As we look ahead, operators will be faced with a juggling act to manage consumer price expectations whilst building long term loyalty. We are already seeing exciting innovations to this end and a continued focus on the quality of experience will ensure the sector's projected growth remains on trend. Additional findings include: 70% of consumers surveyed expect to eat out at the same rate as they have done in the past year in the next 12 months. Italian remains the nation's favourite dining out dish, voted for by 40%, while Indian came second with 30%.

The average spend per person is £12.98 for lunch and £20.13 for dinner. Men are more likely to spend more than women, and the over‐60s are the highest spending group. Anya Marco, Director of Insight, Allegra Strategies, adds: Although industry sentiment is guarded, understandably dampened by a cautious economic outlook, it is clear that UK consumers are refusing to give up on affordable eating out. The report shows that visit frequency is expected to remain stable and regardless of prevailing economic conditions, people are determined to continue to enjoy themselves when they can. Successful operators in the branded restaurant market recognise the pressures on household budgets. By focusing on more innovative ways to deliver value for money, it is these operators who are benefiting most from the continued propensity to habitually eat out and spend on experiences that cannot be easily replicated at home.

Lightly boil remaining sauce and brush beef again. 7. Remove toothpicks

LEMON & GARLIC ROASTED CHICKEN Wrapping this chicken in greaseproof paper traps all the juices and keeps the bird wonderfully moist with a crisp coating. Serves 6. INGREDIENTS: 1.8kg whole chicken salt and freshly ground black pepper One large lemon, sliced Six cloves garlic, sliced Six sprigs fresh thyme METHOD: 1. Preheat oven to 160 C, gas mark 3. 2. Place a large sheet of greaseproof or baking parchment ‐ big enough to wrap around the chicken with extra for folding ‐ in middle of a roasting tray. 3. Season chicken, stuff with half lemon slices and place breast side up in middle of paper. 4. Sprinkle with garlic slices and thyme and put rest of lemon over breast. 5. Fold paper over chicken to make a loose parcel. 6. Bake for one and a half to two hours or until juices are no longer pink. 7. Remove from oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes before carving. 8. Serve with green vegetables and sauté potatoes.

POSH HAM & CHEESE OMELETTE A quick and easy recipe that's ideal to give a different twist to breakfast or enjoy as a special brunch. Serves 4. INGREDIENTS: Eight eggs Four slices good quality ham Four handfuls of grated cheddar Pinch of thyme Salt & pepper Three tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Sprinkle with cheese and top with the ham slices. 4. Slide omelette out of pan onto a large chopping board. 5. Add thyme, roll up omelette with ham and cheese inside and cut diagonally into quarters. 6. Serve with salad garnish and cherry tomatoes.

The nation was bowled over when Ashleigh Butler and Pudsey stormed their way to victory in Britain's Got Talent. The 17‐year‐old and her pet charmed viewers with their fast‐footed routines to win £500,000 and a top spot at the Royal Variety Performance.

The Northampton teen had spent years training Pudsey ‐ a border collie, bichon frise and Chinese crested cross ‐ to jump, dance on his hind legs, meander through her legs ‐ and even got him to run across the judges' table. The pair's success was obviously the result of hundreds upon hundreds of hours of work and training ‐ and further proof that kindness and rewards are a more effective method of training than force and harsh words. But is Pudsey a one‐off, or is it possible to train any dog to copy his antics? Dog behaviourist Mike Mullan believes so, and with more than 50 years' experience of working with the animals the Doberman Club vice president knows what he's talking about. He says: Basically the answer is yes, apart from large breeds ‐ giant breeds would be very difficult just from a physical point of view. But a standard size dog, any small dog such as terriers, or working dogs like Labradors can be trained like Pudsey. Border collies are absolutely ace ‐ they're one of the most intelligent dogs on the planet. Mike advises owners to start simple training exercises with their pet when it's fairly young. He adds: You mustn't put a lot of stress on the muscles of a puppy until after they're a year old, preferably 18 months. But having said that, you can still start it jumping over a broomstick nine inches above the ground. The most important thing is instilling a good standard of obedience but it must be fun, not stressful.

You can use titbits or a toy and get it follow the titbit round in a circle. Then stand with your legs slightly apart and use the titbit to get it to go through your legs. Then get the dog to go round the other side and that's one of the things that Pudsey does. Then you can give it a command like 'round' and after a while you can drop the titbit. Then you can gradually knit them all together into a routine. Joining a dog training club is the most effective way of making progress, for both you and your pet. The Pudsey phenomenon has resulted in an increase in the number of people who are keen to find out how they can do more with their animals, says Mike, who has been running classes for years. He says: The most important thing is the motivation, whether you start off with titbits or a toy. And praise ‐ all the time. So the dog thinks, 'This is good, I like doing this.' But it takes a lot of time and effort. Ten minutes three or four times a day is much better than half an hour twice a week. Something that's fun for five or 10 minutes becomes hard work if they have to do it for half an hour. It should always be fun and stress‐free and you should finish up with a little game so the dog realises that it's fun and they want to do it again. You can teach it to walk to heel, teach it to come to you when called, teach it to go over a little jump. You can teach it to fetch but never a stick, an unwashed sock with your scent on it and filled with sand is best. You can teach it a little bit of scent work. Let the dog see where you are hiding the sock, tell it to go find, and when it brings the sock back give it a pat and a titbit. Gradually you can hide the sock without the dog seeing it and it will be able to find it just using your scent. Basically they're like a child ‐ the more you teach them, the more they want to learn.
