FUENGIROLA’S FERIA

Fuengirola’s Feria is held from the 6th to the 12th October each year and features displays by horses as well as bullfights, flamenco dancing and other popular Spanish cultural activities. At the beginning of the celebrations, preparations begin in the Plaza de la Constitucion - silken flags are strewn across the plaza, and the church is decorated with hundreds of wonderful flowers. On Saturday, everyone congregates in the plaza and Flamenco dancing begins... Throughout the streets of Fuengirola on Saturday, different scenes of festivity can be seen. All week a wonderful fair (carnival) with many great rides and stalls, plus restaurants and bars, is available in the fairgrounds of Fuengirola. You can ride in a beautiful carriage drawn by horses through the town to the Feria grounds during the festivities.

THE PILAR FESTIVAL, ZARAGOZA The Pilar Festival is celebrated every year on the 12th October and lasts for around 12 days when Zaragoza comes alive with music, parades, flowers and theatre in honour of the Virgin of Pilar. Trails of roses, lilies, orchids and gladiolus wind their way to the Plaza de Pilar as an offering to the Virgin. During this wonderful celebration of culture and history music and dance take to the streets. The music is not bound by one particular kind and you will hear reggae, jazz, pop, rock, and folk to name but a few. Spontaneous flamenco dancing is common but a distinctive form of dancing that you're unlikely to have come across is the Jota. This dance can be traced back to the 1600s although it has changed somewhat from its original form. You can join in the street celebrations and learn to dance the jota with the locals. Another novelty is the procession of the giants and big heads (gigantes y cabezudos) in which huge papier mache figures join the carnival on the street and mingle with the crowds. Bull fighting is another aspect of this celebration, because as with all Spanish gatherings, the bull must make his appearance. He is quite a distinguished part of the Spanish history so a celebration without him wouldn’t be quite the same. Plays and theatre are another big part of this celebration often attracting famous actors and actresses who can often be spotted entertaining the crowds. The one act plays are particularly enjoyable.

Penelope Cruz is a Spanish actress born in Alcobendas, Madrid on April 28 1974. She has a younger brother Eduardo, who is a singer and a younger sister Monica, who is also an actress. Initially interested in dance, Cruz studied classical ballet at Spain’s National Conservatory. She also studied for theatre at Christina Rota’s New York school. As a teenager she became interested in acting after seeing the film Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down by Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

She was signed by an agent at the age of 15 and made her acting debut in a music video for the Spanish pop group Mecano’s song La Fuerza del Destino. She made her feature film debut in 1992 at age 18 as the lead role in the comedy drama Jamon, Jamon. After appearing topless in the film she became a major sex symbol. Between 1990 and 1997 Cruz hosted the Spanish TV channel Telecinco’s talk show La Quinta She Marcha. The program was aimed at a teenage audience and hosted by teenagers. Subsequent roles included Open Your Eyes, The Hi-Lo Country, The Girl of Your Dreams and Woman on Top.

In 2001 Cruz won recognition for her lead roles in the worldwide commercially successful films Vanilla Sky, where she played the love interest of Tom Cruise’s character and Blow where she played the wife of Johnny Depp’s character.

Cruz appeared alongside Salma Hayek in the 2006 comedy western film Bandidas, where they rob banks. The pair were hailed as marketing fantasy for the film. Also in 2006 Cruz received favourable reviews for her performance in Pedro Almodovars film Volver. She shared a Best Actress award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival with five of her co-stars. In the same year she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2008, Cruz starred in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona, playing Maria Elena, a mentally unstable woman. For her role she received her first Academy Award as well as a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. She was the first Spanish actress in history to receive an Academy Award and the first Spanish actress to receive a star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2010, Cruz had a cameo role in Sex & the City 2 and appeared in her biggest Hollywood movie to date, playing Angelica, Blackbeard’s daughter & former love interest of Jack Sparrow in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean Film. Cruz became the spokes model for French beauty company L’Oreal in 2006. She also models for Ralph Lauren, Lancôme and for Spanish company Mango, for whom Cruz and her sister Monica design items. Cruz also donates both her time and money to charities. She has worked in both Uganda and India, where she spent one week working for Mother Theresa. In 2010 Penelope Cruz was ranked No.7 on Askmen.com’s Most Desirable Women.

As a magazine it is always brilliant for us to interact with all of our advertisers and when possible try their products and services for ourselves. Well to our pleasant surprise we received an invitation from Captain Pat of Bluewater Marbella to board his vessel the ‘ANA LUIS’ and we jumped at the chance to have a glimpse of what delights his client’s experience. We were greeted onboard by Captain Pat and his deck hand, Mark, both of whom were dressed in smart attire and we were shown around the boat. After the additional 8 guests arrived onboard that we were introduced to, we were taken through the necessary safety procedures. We were then asked if we needed any sun tan lotion which they keep onboard. (Although we declined, it was a big mistake – the power of the sun out at sea is strong - so always accept the lotion if offered!) We were then treated to a taster of things to come with canapés and Champagne of the highest, exquisite quality whilst we were still in the port just to get our taste buds tingling. All the fresh food is professionally created and served and with Captain Pat’s meticulous eye to detail it was almost a shame to dig into the gourmet display: But we just had to do it! When everyone was ready the powerful engines were fired up and we set off out of the port into the shimmering blue Mediterranean Sea. It seemed very strange at first, as we did not know any of the other couples onboard but within minutes everyone was chatting to each other and enjoying the sunshine and company.

Canapés & Champagne just for Starters

Captain Pat Mark made sure we had plenty of soft drinks, beers or spirits during our trip and catered to our every whim in a polite and professional manner whilst Captain Pat was at the helm. Being very knowledgeable Pat knows just about everything there is to know about the waters and scenery we were viewing and is always chatting away, answering questions clients may have. After cruising by for some time in the glorious sunshine and being treated like Kings and Queens the boat anchored off a scenic stretch of coastline. We were treated yet again to more gourmet cuisine and of course drink whilst we took in the scenery, relaxing but keeping our eyes open, hoping to see the local dolphins. You also had the opportunity to swim in the sea and enjoy the rich blue shimmer of the water with an expert looking out for your safety. Everyone took the opportunity to do the Titanic scene at the front of the boat whilst it was anchored. When everyone was fed, watered and relaxed, the anchor was lifted and we started our cruise back to the port. As we re entered the port the cruiser was professionally reversed into the berth where it all started and our new friendships were made. Would we recommend a charter with Bluewater Marbella? Oh yes 100%. MAKE UP YOU CAN WAKE UP IN For most women, applying make-up in the morning is like getting dressed or having breakfast - it's just part of the normal routine. But what if you didn't have to spend a fortune on regularly buying beauty products or spend hours prettifying yourself? What if you woke up every day with your make-up looking as fresh as a character from a TV show? It may be possible, if you opt for semi-permanent make-up. One woman who investigated this area a few years ago and has since become an expert on it is Debra Robson-Lawrence. Based in her discreet Harley Street clinic, Robson-Lawrence pioneered semi-permanent make-up over 20 years ago and these days is acknowledged as a leader in her field. She is sought out by everyone from actresses desiring high-definition perfection right through to women who've lost their eyebrows through chemotherapy or alopecia and who want to look their confident best again. Cosmetic surgeon Dr Rajiv Grover has described Robson-Lawrence as having "a magic touch". So, what is semi-permanent make-up? It's easy for Hollywood horror stories to spring to mind when you think of this form of make-up. But we've come a long way since the days of bold and scary-looking tattooed-on eyebrows. These days the whole point is that it's subtle enough to make you simply look fresher and prettier, which is the main reason that it's good to visit a practitioner who really knows what they're doing.

Semi-permanent make-up can be an option for a number of looks including enhancing brows, contouring and defining lips or adding a flattering infusion of rosiness to lips that are grey or have a lifeless appearance. It can even be used to successfully recreate the appearance of eyelashes - a godsend for anyone who has lost their own eyelashes through alopecia or cancer, or for burns patients. Robson-Lawrence has trademarked a micro-pigmentation technique called Fame (Facial Aesthetic Micro Enhancement), which is ultra-delicate. The clinic also has a technique that can be used for optical nipple and areola reconstruction in women who've had implants after partial or total mastectomies. Ten per cent of the cost of each reconstructive procedure is donated to Breast Cancer Care. So if you fancy turning back the clock a few years or simply correcting a few flaws, then semi-permanent make-up may well be worth considering.

BEAUTIFUL HAIR - WH Women have always known that hair becomes more difficult to style and maintain with age, but experts now confirm that it does indeed age along with our skin and bodies. Whenever hair is neglected or abused its strength starts to decline, no matter what your age. However, ageing hair is far more delicate and needs a little extra tender loving care. Hair actually starts to age after the age of 25. Each strand shrinks 10 per cent in diameter and may become duller due to loss of the colour pigment melanin. Just like prematurely aged skin, hair can also be prematurely aged by abuse and misuse of chemicals and heat styling tools. Signs include weakness or brittleness, dryness, flaking scalp, split ends and an extra fine and frizzy texture. Ageing hair needs to be strengthened and moisturised by the right combination of products. This can be easily achieved with a daily care regime as well as the right haircut. Celebrity New York hair designer Philip Pelusi recommends that ageing hair be cut and styled a little differently. He says softer, loose curls or waves make anyone appear younger, whereas sharp angles and severe shapes will have the opposite effect. Pelusi also suggests that ageing hair looks at its best when treated to softer, slightly lighter hair colour with varying tones. Dark, solid shades must be avoided. Hair colour also needs to complement skin and eye colour, so a consultation with a skilled salon colourist is advisable.

HATEVER YOUR AGE Pelusi offers his top 10 anti-ageing tips for hair. Use products specifically designed to rejuvenate ageing hair. Dove Pro-Age shampoo and conditioner is specifically made for ageing hair, but your hairdresser can tailor-make a hair care regime for you. Follow the regime consistently for best results. Treat your hair to regular salon hair and scalp treatments for deep, intense conditioning. Supply nutrients to your hair through a healthy diet and supplements of essential fatty acids. Hair is definitely a reflection of inner health. Drink plenty of water to keep skin and hair hydrated. Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood flow to the scalp. This will help encourage healthy hair growth. Maintain a relaxation programme to keep stress at bay. Stress can take its toll on the health of your hair and skin. Get plenty of rest. Proper sleep is very important to maintain the health of the entire body, including the hair. Keep the scalp in its optimum healthy state. A healthy scalp means healthy hair. Treat wet hair with tender loving care. Apply a detangling product before combing it and use a wide toothed comb only. Never brush wet hair as it will break. Sleep on a satin pillow case to reduce friction on the hair, which can cause breakage.

Seaweed has long been known as a health remedy. Devotees swear by its curative qualities if its derivatives are added to bath water and the beneficial effects it can have if used in cooking. But now scientists have discovered that it could be useful for increasing the amount of fibre in our diet. A team of researchers at Newcastle University has reported that food high in fat and calories could be made healthier by adding the seaweed extract known as alginate. Junk food junkies would be able to carry on eating naughty nibbles such as burgers and cakes so long as they were laced with the additive, making it a new weapon in the constant battle against obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and bowel cancer.

SEAW THE NE MUST-

They have explained that alginates have many benefits, most notably that they are odourless and tasteless so can be added to the ingredients of fattening foods without consumers sacrificing any of their enjoyment of them. Professor Jeff Pearson, a member of the research team, said, "We believe it's hard to change people's habits and that the most practical solution is to improve the food they do eat. "With a burger, for example, you would simply remove some of the fat and replace it with the seaweed extract, which is an entirely natural product from a sustainable resource."

Low Cost Advertising Your Business Advert Could Be Here Email: sales@acrossspain.es

He has already made loaves of bread containing the seaweed extract and thinks this is one of the best ways to reach people, because it is a staple of our diets. "Adding the seaweed extract could quadruple the amount of fibre in white bread," he said. Seaweed has a long history as a health benefit. In the 18th Century, iodine was isolated by distilling the long ribbons, or thalli, and bladderwrack be came this element's main source for more than 50 years. It was used extensively to treat goitre, a swelling of the thyroid related to lack of iodine.

WEED: EW DIET -HAVE

The Japanese eat lots of seaweed for its concentrated mineral content. As well as being an excellent source of iodine, seaweed contains calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc.

Copper and iron are good for healthy blood while magnesium assists in the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. Calcium is needed for healthy bones and potassium for the maintenance of body cells and balance of fluids. Zinc helps build up the body's immune system. Most seaweeds are said to contain some B vitamins and beta carotene, the plant form of vitamin A. However, the amount varies according to the type of seaweed and how it is served. Beta carotene, an antioxidant, may help to prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer. Traditionally, seaweed has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments including constipation, colds, arthritis and rheumatism. High in sodium, it is not recommended for those on a low sodium diet. The Japanese also believe seaweed is good for hair and helps to prevent throat cancer.

Many property investors look to buy abroad. For those wanting to tap into the rental market, it makes sense to look where property is cheaper and the rental properties are in hot demand. Popular recent arrivals on the rental market map are eastern European countries including Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia, and as far afield as Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. The demand for selfcatering accommodation in Dubai has also grown. With so many new developments under way in all of these burgeoning property investment markets, the number of self catering options is expected to grow for tourists. Although savvy investors are always looking for up-and-coming markets to make a quick euro, it is Europe where most of overseas property investment is concentrated. The top three countries for rental holiday homes are Spain, France and Italy, where tourism and holiday property are firmly established.

Spain, France and Italy may not offer the cheapest properties abroad, but when it comes to rental markets they are firm favourites. If you buy in the right location you are almost guaranteed a regular rental income, which compensates for the higher purchase price.

For those seeking the laid-back lifestyle and temperate climate found in Spain, but away from the over-developed Costa's, Portugal has experienced the fiercest holiday home growth in western Europe. The number of Portuguese holiday homes available to let has increased in excess of 300 per cent. Another destination showing investment promise and working on attracting more holidaymakers is Cyprus. The number of holiday home rentals there has more than doubled supporting figures from the Cypriot Land Registry which reveal that 12,000 Britons now own homes on the island. These figures demonstrate the ongoing attraction of western Europe as an investment location and how, with its easy access from the UK, it still has property investment Potential. With yet more investment in eastern Europe and South America it will be interesting to monitor how these markets develop in the next couple of years. It is vital for investors that there is a sufficient tourism draw and that affordable flights are available in order for holidaymakers to be drawn to these areas. No matter how many developments are built or holiday homes advertised, there needs to be a demand from holidaymakers for self catering accommodation.

Despite reports of economic gloom, falling house prices and a recession there are still huge profits to be made in international property - particularly in emerging markets that are currently competitively priced but set to boom. The only thing standing between you and your property investment abroad is a little inside information. To that end, property and investment company Aston Lloyd, has compiled a report called The Seven Property Hotspots, identifying the top seven places and cities in the world where you are most likely to make a profit. 1. SLOVAKIA: Where to invest : Watch out for : 2. CHINA: Where to invest: Watch out for: 3. NORTHERN CYPRUS: Where to invest: Watch out for:

A key emerging market in the European Union, the country's property prices have risen by 100 per cent since 2004. Central Bratislava where yields are high. Gross yields on 100 square metre and 120 square metre apartments are around 10 per cent. Minor land issues caused by unsolved heritage disputes prior to 1989 as these may require a prolonged acquisition procedure. Home to 21 per cent of the world's population and forecast to be larger than the US economy by 2045. Shanghai with an increasing demand for high-end property. Investment in the city's infrastructure is expected to sustain price growth. Consult with solicitors on precise property rights as given the communist government's policies, certain property rights are not guaranteed. Plans for reunification with the Republic of Cyprus, combined with average annual economic growth of 12.7 per cent since 2003, Northern Cyprus is a key property hotspot. Bogaz, the coastal fishing village is the hotspot for investment. It is popular for its beaches, sought after restaurants and its strategic location near Famugusta. With the division of the island in 1974 and the forced removal of residents in certain areas, some claims to property may exist if the island division is settled and displaced northern Cypriots return from the south.

The second largest economy among the former Soviet States, with a predicted sustained GDP growth of five per cent per annum through to 2010. Ukrainian property in some areas is now priced higher than Warsaw and Amsterdam. Kiev has a growing expatriate community and an increasing demand created for high-standard builds in the capital. Prices have been driven up by demand. Levels of corruption are high so a competent solicitor is essential. Taxes are also moderate to high. A full member of the EU and tipped to receive over ÂŁ8.8bn in EU development funding beyond 2013. Sofia, the capital city and home to majority of Bulgaria's 200,000 millionaires. Prices here rose by 35 per cent in 2007, making it a strong property investment. Closing costs are high (VAT, municipal tax, notary fees, registration fees and agent commission are paid by the buyer). Costs incurred by the buyer can therefore be up to 25 per cent. There is also rental income tax so investors should make sure their investment returns profitable yields. Average annual growth rate of seven per cent since 2004, Turkey has established itself as a leading emerging market for property investors. With a burgeoning tourist industry and planned reforms ahead of its EU accession, it's poised to become one of the world's top 10 economies by 2050. Belek, Turkey's golfing mecca with plans to add up to 15 golf courses to its range of five-star golf retreats over the coming years. Belek is bathed in sunshine for 320 days a year. Property investment has increased by 40 per cent since 2005. Check the planning so you don't have ugly builds near your investment; ensure that property for sale is accompanied by title deeds and make sure you get a competent solicitor to explain the terms before making the decision to purchase. Poised to become the manufacturing hub of Europe, the country's housing market is significantly larger than other European emerging markets and mortgages are easier to obtain. Warsaw, high housing demand and profitable long-stay rental properties. Krakow is well suited for rental investors with a housing supply that does not meet the demands of its high earning population. Growth in Warsaw potentially unsustainable; increased due diligence on behalf of investors as some vendors are offering inflated prices taking advantage of the boom in foreign speculative buying.

Another month passes and this one has not been quite so strong for the pound, so what has happened to influence exchange rates? From the UK figures out showed that retail sales slowed and disappointed in August as retail sales fell 1.0% on the month - the first month on month fall for 4 months and alarmingly the biggest fall in more than 1 year. Clearly people were looking at their waistlines as food sales saw the largest fall. Better news came from car sales where the UK saw increases sales completely bucking the trend seen across the Eurozone. Latest information from the Office for National Statistics indicates The UK's public finances showed a smaller than expected deficit for August helped in part by a cut back in government spending and we could be looking at the UK coming in below its budget for borrowing at around £107 billion rather than the target of £120billion all brighter news going forward. The Cooperative Bank is still very much in the news and has caved in to bondholder pressure as it seeks to work out how to restructure its banking arm. Most of the talk this week however has been centred on the Eurozone and of course the victory in the German elections for Mrs Merkel as she wins her third term in office with a promise to continue the successful path Germany has been treading. On Monday we had data from Germany showing the manufacturing and services sector both rose again in September which shows business conditions are solid and continues to show its strength as the strongest among Eurozone countries. France thankfully also saw expansion as the private sector at last rose to its highest for 18 months and saw a figure of 50.2 up from 48.8. With both of the above mentioned countries showing improvement they contributed greatly to an improved reading for the Eurozone taking it to a 27 month high of 52.1 for September which interestingly was also the steepest growth since April 2011. The downside still remains in Italy where the government has raised its debt and deficit forecast for 2014 which confirms weaker growth in the country and they now expect the economy to contract around 1.7% this year. Greece still rumbles on and unfortunately is hit by a further round of public sector strikes just at the time the committee from the EU and IMF visit to agree the release of a further 1 billion euros as part of the previously agreed bailout package. Great news from Ireland came out of recession in Q2, helped by exports and consumer spending and further good news for the Eurozone came when inflation fell to 1.3% in August down form the July figure of 1.6%. and is expected to remain below the European Central Bank’s (ECB) 2% target through 2014. This should give the ECB plenty of scope to keep interest rates “at present or lower levels for an extended period of time”, as stated by President Draghi. Even with the good or improved news from the Eurozone its still hard to understand why the European Parliament is to pay out a massive £174million for new buildings in Brussels!!

Across the water at last the news is out, initially the Federal Reserve in the US was expected to slow its quantitative easing (QE) purchases last week and reduce the amount of monthly bond-buying from the existing level of $85bn a month, however it did surprise most people when it agreed to continue the bond-buying at its present level of $85bn a month. For Americans the expectation of a interest rate rise had also seen their monthly costs for their mortgage and other household items increase so the Federal Reserve may have been a bit concerned that any further increases could create a slow down in consumer spending. It seems however the decision when it was taken was a close call. For the USA and The Federal Reserve the next issue is, who will replace Mr Bernanke and of course the decision to taper may wait until the new person is appointed. Monthly unemployment across the States held out , even though the last weeks figures were slightly higher than expected.

In under a decade, eBay has grown into an incredible auction website that commands an audience of around 37 million people around the world. Some look for bargain second-hand goods, others look for cheaper versions of something they've spotted in the shops, and others just find themselves addictively browsing five times a day, which has to be a bit healthier than smoking, though perhaps no cheaper. As long as you know what you are looking for, you can usually find it posted on eBay. From skin care products to outfits for you pooch, car care products to shoes - both footwear and alloys - you can bid for what you want and for the price that you are willing to pay. Apart from the opportunity for a real bargain, there are growing numbers of aficionados who think eBay is simply more fun than a shopping mall. While the process of bidding can see like a tiresome process at your first try, when you do win a bid at a good price, you might feel like you've won your item, which is exactly what eBay tells you when you've 'won' the item. Feeling victorious over a store purchase just doesn't come that often, unless you happen to find the very last this season's must have that just happens to be your size. "eBay is entertainment," says Dawn Reno, co-author of The Unofficial Guide to eBay and Online Auctions . "It's different all the time, never the same. Every half-hour there's all new stuff, which is so indicative of the internet as a whole. "Plus, people love an auction. There's something about bidding that gets the heart pounding." eBay has certainly become one of the most successful concepts of the internet age. Uniquely, it is like the world's largest second-hand shop and all the bargain-basement shops in the world all rolled into one. Jim Griffith, head trainer of eBay University - the company's road show of seminars for novice buyers and sellers - says, "Even if you don't use it, you know some one who does, and you've had to listen to their stories about how much they love it." Since its creation, eBay has become a daily fix for millions of buyers in search of quirky stuff. It's addictive and many homeowners find themselves hunting around on eBay instead of sitting down in front of the television. People with laptops, of course, often do both at the same time. "Five minutes of eBay will expose you to more items than you'll ever see in a shopping centre," says Marsha Collier, co-author of eBay for Dummies . On any given day, there are millions items for sale on eBay, with millions of new items added daily. Sales per day run up into the many millions of pounds. For many homeowners, it has become a way to buy what they want and sell what they don't want.

We all know that eating your greens, drinking plenty of water and taking regular exercise are good for us. But did you know that your daily coffee break at work could be doing your health more good than you realise? If so then you're not alone as the latest market research suggests that current perceptions about coffee are completely off the boil. But the truth is that your regular cup of coffee can count as part of your daily fluid intake and can help protect you against an array of diseases. There are many misconceptions about coffee. For example, 61 per cent of us don't even realise that it can count toward our daily fluid intake. Its health benefits are also unknown, as 84 per cent of us don't know that coffee consumption has been shown to protect against cognitive decline and certain other neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Not only this but coffee may protect against the development of type-two diabetes and 74 per cent of us have no idea. We need to be aware that there are many misconceptions about coffee that are simply not true. There is strong scientific evidence to suggest that moderate coffee consumption (four to five cups per day) may confer a variety of health benefits and should be enjoyed when we take our breaks in the day. As well as being enjoyable, and safe in moderation, caffeine can increase your levels of alertness, helping you to stay on top form when you are at your desk or in that all-important meeting. Going for that well earned coffee break should be part of our daily routine, yet, 63 per cent of us have tried to reduce the number of cups we drink each day because of myths about coffee.

TOP COFFEE MYTHS Coffee is an addictive drug? Three out of four coffee drinkers have tried to reduce the number of cups of coffee consumed each day because they think coffee is addictive. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim when coffee is consumed in moderation.

Coffee dehydrates you? Over 50 per cent of coffee drinkers have tried to reduce their number of daily cups because they think coffee is dehydrating. Scientific evidence shows that a cup of coffee will contribute to your daily fluid intake

Coffee increases the risk of heart disease? Many large studies have shown that moderate coffee intake is not associated with any increase in the risk of heart disease. A study published in June 2008 showed that women who drank three cups of coffee a day were 25 per cent less likely to die from heart disease. However it seems that far from having adverse health effects, coffee has even demonstrated a protective effect against cognitive decline and certain other neurological disorders. Research shows that coffee consumption is associated with a decreased risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Not only this but coffee has been shown to have a protective effect on the liver, lowering the risk of developing liver cirrhosis by 71 per cent in subjects drinking three or more cups of coffee each day. Similarly an increase of two cups of coffee per day has been associated with a 43 per cent reduced risk of liver cancer. Coffee, in moderation, is perfectly safe for most people. Relax and enjoy your coffee!

Though a bit heavy on the neon, Las Vegas is a true feast for the eyes. Every hotel is striving to top the next one with its own unique theme, majestic entrances, enticing casinos, delectable restaurants and impressive entertainment. It can be said that Las Vegas does not have a boring bone in its body. The Las Vegas tourism board initially enticed adults to come and play in 'Sin City' but then advertised the lively city as a family-friendly destination in the 1990s. But Vegas is focusing its attention on the adults again with the new tagline: "What happens here, stays here." City advertisers want to attract people from all over the world to their own adult playground, complete with endless gambling, alcohol, food and entertainment. It is billed as a magical place that will cater to every need and fulfil every fantasy. The hotels in Las Vegas are truly incredible to behold. They pay homage to other unique cities, like New York, Venice and Paris, by recreating smaller versions of these cities. New York, New York hotel reconstructs the lively streets of Gotham. The Venetian hotel has a huge indoor canal complete with gondolas and gondoliers. The Paris hotel experience comes complete with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. There are tributes to other themes as well, including ancient Rome (Caesar's Palace), Hollywood (MGM Grand), pirates (Treasure Island), Arabian nights (Aladdin) and many more. Two of the nicest hotels with casinos in Las Vegas, the Bellagio and the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel, don't have specific themes besides that of opulence and luxury. Vegas entertainment has always been a huge draw for tourists. Magicians, such as Penn and Teller entertain crowds with their amazing optical illusions. Entertainers, like Donny & Marie Osmond still command packed houses night after night with their well-loved repertoire of musical favourites.

That's not to mention the many world-famous stars that perform in the city each year. Shopping and eating are two popular pastimes in Las Vegas. Caesar's Palace offers a world-class shopping mall featuring a painted blue sky with clouds adorning the ceiling. The Venetian also has first class shopping with many designer brands. Most of the other hotels showcase several great shops inside their lobbies and host many more on their premises. When hunger strikes, there is no shortage of fabulous food. Las Vegas is no longer a place of all-you-can-eat-buffets. World-renowned chefs Wolfgang Puck (Spago) and Emeril Lagasse have several excellent eateries in town and many of the prominent hotels boast other awardwinning restaurants. Of course, the most popular reason for visiting Las Vegas is for the gambling casinos. From the nickel slot machines to the rooms of tables reserved for those starting bets over $1,000, there is a venue for every budget. Games such as craps, blackjack and baccarat draw millions of people a year to try their hand at the tables, accompanied by attractive cocktail waitresses handing out free drinks. There are some success stories, but many more sob stories, when people arrive home from their jaunts to Las Vegas after playing against the casinos. Amateur gamblers who visit Las Vegas report that it is best to decide how much money to play with before starting and sticking with that limit. Las Vegas, at its best, is a destination for a bit of harmless fun in sensible excess.

LIBRA

Relationships become focal as the Full Moon will be in your opposite sign on the 12th. For all your positive growth recently comes a chance to put your personal skills to the test. Someone in your life may be feeling left out or that you don't have time for them any more. Making up is something you're good at so you'll waste no time in putting things right. Towards the end of the month, your social life demands more time than you can give. Obligations that you made earlier on in the month start catching up with you.

SCORPIO

The last thing you want to do at the moment is face the world, so you'll be happy to retreat until you feel recharged. Let the phone ring, let the emails pile up; you'll want to sort things out internally before dealing with the outside world. Mid month you'll feel like emerging, fresh faced like you've never gone anywhere. You'll find your popularity on the rise and in fact, you'll secretly enjoy the attention. You'll definitely make an impression on the right people, so don't be surprised if you receive an invitation that could open the door to something a lot more interesting.

SAGITTARIUS

For much of the summer, you spent your time putting in the ground work, planning and preparing your big career move. While you may have felt like a hamster spinning relentlessly in it's wheel, now the fruits of your labour are ripe for the picking. At the beginning of the month, the production will run smoothly prompting you to start delegating some of your work. Recalling events and relationships from your past will have a profound effect on you making you realise how much they have shaped who you are today.

CAPRICORN

The beginning of the month brings you the guidance you've been looking for; an assuring sign that you're on the right track. You've had a gut feeling it will all pay off one day, but now you'll know when and how. However, with the Full Moon landing in the area of home and family on the 12th, your attention will be drawn back to home. You've made a lot of personal sacrifices for the sake of your career recently but those you are closest to may be feeling excluded. As the month progresses, your social life begins to take on a life of its own as you start networking more with like-minded people.

AQUARIUS

PISCES

It wouldn't be unusual for your mind to be racing into overtime, dreaming up new lofty ideas and thinking of ways to advance your life. But for the first week of the month, you've been working the grey matter into overtime as a succession of seemingly innocuous incidents has been opening the door to new opportunities. As much as you like to burst forward, you may not have taken the time to integrate the skills you've recently taken on. From the 24th onwards will make you come face to face with the reality of your closest relationships.

For the last few weeks of September you may have been trying to hash out a financial deal but given a bit of time, new developments begin to appear. You may have had to keep a delicate balance to keep the deal going but by the time money planet Venus moves into the area of abundance on the 9th, your financial woes will be a thing of the past. While there may still be some tension lingering, you can breathe a sigh of relief as you move forward. As the month draws to a close, you might feel that you have to defend yourself over a personal matter. You may feel caught under the cross fire after the 24th but luckily you have good allies who will not only support you along the way but help as and when they can.

ARIES

With so many themes surrounding relationship, partnerships and close one to one connections from the end of last month, it may not always be easy to know exactly where you stand. Of course, the mighty Ram still wants to maintain their individuality, but your interactions with others brings upon an interesting revelation at the beginning of October. Not only will you bring about change in those around you, but they'll help open your eyes to your own habits and behaviour.

TAURUS

With all the preparations you've been putting in place since the end of last month, you'll hope your workload lets up soon. There are still a lot of adjustments to be made as you hone your skills but thankfully you will finally begin to see the results of your efforts trickling in slowly. You have longevity in mind with everything you do, so you won't worry if you don't get a windfall overnight. Venus, your planetary ruler moves into your opposite sign on the 9th bringing a certain flavour of passion and intensity into your love life.

GEMINI

Love is in the air, and on your mind, and in your heart and undoubtedly in the bedroom! With a planetary pile up in the area of romance it's likely that you've been living on another dimension. Relationship planet Venus, Mercury, Saturn and the Sun has been making you engage on a whole new level. For the single Gemini, it’s likely that you've had your fair share of attention – you may even be spoilt for choice. For those already in a relationship, you'll find that your union will run smooth with a pleasant exchange.

CANCER

The focus will still be on getting the balance between your professional and home life right. A steady chain of changes at work means your domestic arrangement sometimes gets out of kilter but you'll manage to hold on to the reins. The real issue however may be getting your finances in order as you're likely to feel the pinch at the beginning of the month. Of course you want to treat your loved ones and have some form of social life – but it may have to be done on a budget.

LEO

VIRGO

Mighty Mars continues to move through the area of personal development all month making you take a great interest in advancing yourself and making the most of your talents. It’s true that you have a natural ability to lead but push may come to shove at the beginning of the month if you overstep the mark at the office. Know your boundaries and act accordingly otherwise you could set the stage for a showdown to be remembered and that's not how you want to be remembered professionally.

Although money matters will be high on your list of priorities at the beginning of the month, you'll be feeling more confident about the state of your bank balance that you have in a while. It's true, you've had to eliminate a lot of activities from your leisure time but you have been realistic about what needed to be done. While this may have not impressed your nearest and dearest, you know it’s for the best in the long run. There's something you've wanted to do for some time and now that you have more confidence about your financial backing, the time is ripe to take your ventures forward.

HALLOWEEN Halloween is one of the world’s oldest holidays, dating back to pagan times. It is celebrated today by more people in more countries than ever before. Every country in the world has its own concept of Halloween traditions. Halloween is believed to have originated in the British Isles out of the Pagan Celtic celebration of Samhain. It was believed that spirits rose from the dead and mingled with the living on this day. The Celts left food at their doors to encourage good spirits and they wore mask to scare off bad ones. Many centuries later the Roman Catholic church tried to do away with pagan holidays and so established November 1st as All Saints Day. But this attempt to detract from the Pagan celebration didn’t work and the celebrations on the eve of All Saints Day continued to grow and change. During the Irish immigration into America in the 1840’s, Halloween found its way to the United States. The modern name Halloween comes from the abbreviated form of All Hallows Evening the eve of All Saints Day. Trick or Treating In the Celtic times and up until the medieval ages, fairies were thought to run free on October 31 st. The fairies weren’t evil but they weren’t particularly good. They were mischievous. They liked rewarding good deeds and did not like to be crossed. The fairies were thought to disguise themselves as beggars and go door to door asking for handouts. Those who gave them food were rewarded and those who did not were subjected to some unpleasantness. In medieval times children would go door-to-door begging for cakes, much like the modern trick or treaters. For every cake a child collected, he or she would have to say a prayer for the dead relatives of the person who gave them the cake.

Jack-O-Lanterns As part of the Samhain celebration, Celts would bring home an ember from the communal bonfire at the end of the night. They carried these embers in hollowed-out turnips, creating a lantern resembling the modern day jack-o'-lantern. This carried on in Ireland and Scotland through the 18th century. Traditional jack-o'-lanterns, hollowed-out turnips with embers or candles inside, became a very popular Halloween decoration in Ireland and Scotland a few hundred years ago. Tradition held that they would ward off evil spirits on Halloween. Americans replaced the turnips with pumpkins which were more plentiful and easier to carve. People began to cut frightening faces and other elaborate designs into their jack-o'-lanterns. Today Halloween is celebrated like a masquerade with people wearing every disguise imaginable. Many people decorate their homes and gardens and hand out sweets to trick or treaters. Despite its origins, today Halloween is less to do with evil, devil worship or satanic forces – its just good clean fun!

What's Dracula's car called? A mobile blood unit! Why didn't the skeleton want to play football? Because his heart wasn't in it! Why didn't the skeleton go to the party? He had no body to go with! What happened at the cannibal's wedding party? They toasted the bride and groom! How can you tell if a corpse is angry? It flips its lid!

Why does Dracula have no friends? Because he's a pain in the neck!

What do vampires have at eleven o'clock every day? A coffin break! Why was the little boy unhappy to win first prize for the best costume at the Halloween party? Because he just came to pick up his sister! Why don't cannibals eat weathermen? Because they give them wind!

The Bran Castle, Transylvania, Romania Located deep within the Carpathian Mountains, the castle over 1,000 years old is best known for being Dracula’s Castle in the 1400s. Vlad III Dracula is probably one of the most infamous images of cruelty, due to his preferred method of torture, the impalement. But the cruelty doesn’t end here. Dracula preferred even more gruesome tortures, including hammering nails into the thief’s head, hacking off limbs, blinding, and strangulation, burning or boiled alive, scalping or skinning alive. The castle is filled with instruments from the time of Vlad, being a museum for over 40 years now.

Windsor Castle, London, England Home of the present Queen of England, the Windsor castle is over 900 years old, rumoured to host several ghosts from England’s past. King Henry VIII has been seen walking the hallways of the castle. Many guests said they heard footsteps, agonizing moans on several occasions coming from the castle’s corridors. Some people said they even saw Queen Elizabeth I in the Royal Library, in a black gown walking about. The first Duke of Buckingham, Sir George Villiers, is known to haunt one of the castle’s bedrooms, while the Long Walk is filled with wondering spirits.

Dragsholm Slot, Sealand, Denmark Build in the 12th century, the Dragsholm castle that was home to kinds and noble families has now been converted into a hotel, home to three ghosts: a grey lady, a white one and the ghost of the Earl of Bothwell. The grey lady is said to be a maiden that worked in the castle, while the white lady is the daughter of one of the owners of the castle. Her father caught her in love with a common man and imprisoned her in the castle’s dungeons. In 1930, while building new toilets for the castles, the workers found a skeleton with a white dress imprisoned in the wall. Some areas of the hotel were analyzed by American parapsychologists and found extreme amounts of electricity and radio activity.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland Located on a volcano that turned into a rock, the castle is the center of Scottish history for over 800 years now. After a terrifying plague, officials decided to build the new city over the remains of the old one. The Underground city was discovered in 1990 perfectly preserved while some people were renovating a home. There have been stories of people grabbed by icy hands, shows of light of unknown origin or voices heard throughout the grounds.

Ballygally Castle, Ireland Built in 1625, the Ballygally Castle has now been turned to a hotel, occasionally haunted by Lady Shaw, a former lady of the Castle. She is said to love knocking at the doors of various hotel rooms and finds it amusing when she finds no one there. Ballygally is located near the Giant’s Causeway, offering superb views of the Antrim Mountains and the Irish Sea. You can also try renting a fishing boat for deep sea fishing or catching a trout near the river.

LaTeteria kasbah MO’s KASBAH Welcome to our new restaurant review section. We will be sending diners out to advise you of some of the best places to eat along the Costa del Sol. Our first experience was at Mo’s Kasbah. We were invited to Mo’s Kasbah located in the Port of Fuengirola square and the team being avid lovers of Moroccan cuisine couldn’t resist the invitation. On a beautiful Friday evening we were greeted by the host and shown to our table by very polite waiting staff. The were a mix of tourists of varied nationalities and locals alike who were there to soak up the atmosphere. Moroccan style sofas and decorative artefacts surrounded us, with customers enjoying the genuine hubbly bubblies, as they are affectionately known, combined with the ambience of being in an authentic Moroccan Kasbah environment. The internal dining area of the Kasbah was decorated in full authentic Moroccan décor with the smells of the beautiful cuisine and the hubbly bubblies lingering in the air all adding to the ambience and experience. Mo was on the outside griddle and prepared us a beautiful spicy chicken shish kebab with sides of perfectly cooked rice, chips, salad and home made bread. Absolutely gorgeous, with awesome aromas to tantalise the taste buds. After all he’s been doing this for over 40 years so he has had plenty of time to perfect his culinary skills. All this food was accompanied and washed down by a full selection of beers, wines and spirits to suit everyone’s tastes.

Fuengirola Port At 23.00 we were treated to live Moroccan Music on a key board with a great vocalist accompanied by 2 beautiful Moroccan belly dancers, Julia & Jaishri, in full traditional costume dancing in-between the sofas and tables of the customers making for a personal outdoor experience. We spoke to some of the customers and Leisa & Brian Cooper, a couple from Hartlepool in the UK, who were on a 4-day break to Fuengirola summed up Mo’s Kasbah perfectly. “ The food is excellent! We wish we had opted for the large Shish kebab instead of the small, as it was delicious. We had a lovely evening and we will definitely be back next time we are in Spain and totally recommend Mos Kasbah”. Across Spain also highly recommends Mo’s Kasbah with its great food, great ambience, great entertainment, and authentic Moroccan experience at a competitive price. A fantastic night out not to be missed.

Many of us often prefer our four-legged friends to our human ones and it's not difficult to see why. Animals offer unconditional love, companionship and fun, but did you also know that owning a pet can reduce blood pressure, alleviate depression, conquer stress and release feel-good endorphins that make you feel happy? Its true, and it doesn't seem to matter what type of pet you have, from parrot to poodle - interaction with any animal can produce these health benefits. According to a recent study, owning a pet not only helps you to keep down stress levels, it may also help to prevent heart disease and depression. Even watching a tank full of tropical fish can lower blood pressure, at least for a while. Remarkably, studies have also shown that heart-attack victims who keep pets tend to live longer. Looking after a pet brings out our nurturing instinct and makes us feel safe and unconditionally accepted. Pets make wonderful, loving companions and everyone should consider having one as part of their household. The chances are you'll live longer and feel better by owning a pet. If you thought only dogs and cats were good for your health you couldn't be more wrong. It doesn't matter what pet you get. It could be a dog, cat, parrot, a goldfish or snake. The only thing that matters is that the animal really interests you. It is important that the pet you choose fits your temperament, lifestyle and living space and that the chemistry is compatible before you take a pet into your home, otherwise it could be the source of additional stress. Among the many medical studies that claim owning a pet is good for your heart, one suggests that stroking an animal prompts your brain to release endorphins or "feelgood hormones". This helps you feel calm and therefore lowers your heart rate and blood pressure.

This is supported by claims that families owning a dog or cat are not as stressed and visit their doctors less often than those who don't, say scientists from Cambridge University. Pets make you feel optimistic and relaxed, which lowers your blood pressure. Dogs give the best results, as you get exercise when you take them for walks. Studies show that older people who own pets are more healthy and active than those who don't. As well as feeling healthier, pet owners are less likely to suffer anxiety, loneliness and will have more confidence than people without pets. There is also a positive effect on their emotional health and people who live alone with a pet are less likely to be depressed than those without animal company. But pets don't just brighten up your mood. Some could actually save your life. Many animals can warn their owners about oncoming illness and there are many reports about dogs detecting cancer, while some can identify other types of illness, such as hypoglycaemia (dangerously-low blood sugar levels) in diabetics and oncoming epileptic fits. These health benefits of owning a pet are strong reasons to get one, but consider all the options first and do your homework. Animals are a huge responsibility and although they may seem like fun, there is a lot of hard work involved as well.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR CAR WITH A BIT OF TLC FOR YOUR CAR IT WILL NOT ONLY SAVE YOU MONEY, BUT IT WILL KEEP YOU SAFER TOO

TIP 1: IF YOU AREN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT If you’re lucky enough to have a new car, remember that it’s covered by a three year warranty. If you suspect something isn’t right, take it into a dealer and ask them to check it out; they’ll almost certainly fix it for free. This cover applies to the car, not just the original buyer, so you can make use of it even if you haven’t had the car from new. And make a note of when the three years are up, the cost of extending the warranty is usually reasonable, and the peace of mind is invaluable. TIP 2: PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE Getting your car serviced regularly is the best way to avoid problems, modern cars need little attention between trips to the professionals. Not keeping your car’s service history up to date can ruin its value, so find the service book, see how often it needs to be done and don’t forget when the next one is due. TIP 3: GETTING YOUR HANDS DIRTY There are only three things you need to bother with under the bonnet, and they’re all fluids. WINDSCREEN WASH: The only one likely to need topping up between services. Buy some from the garage, mix with water according to the instructions on the bottle, then use your cars handbook to find where to pour it in. Top up regularly and maybe keep some in the boot too, as being unable to clean your screen on a dirty road is an utter nightmare.

OIL: This is checked with the dipstick. If you can’t find it, consult the handbook, (although some cars check the oil for you and so you don’t have a dipstick). With the engine warm, let the car stand with the engine off for five minutes on a level surface. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it with a clean cloth, stick it back in and remove again. Now look at the oil at the bottom, it should be between the high and low levels on the stick, clean and the colour of dark honey. If it’s black, sludgy, has bits in or a white froth, you might have a problem and should go to a garage. If it’s low you can top it up yourself, again, follow the instructions in the handbook to find the filler cap and get the right grade of oil. COOLANT: This is easier to check. Most cars have a see-through reservoir under the bonnet with high and low markings, and a quick look is all that’s required. Look out for puffs of white smoke from the exhaust that might mean you are burning it up. TIP 4: FEEL THE PRESSURE: Worn tyres are dangerous and under-inflated tyres cost a fortune in extra fuel. The correct pressures are on a label usually found inside the petrol filler cap or in the area where the front door closes. Top up at least once a month and remember to check the spare too. Get your own tyre pressure gauge as garage air lines are notoriously inaccurate. Also get yourself a tyre tread depth gauge to check when your tyres are due for replacement. Also check for any odd lumps, which indicate tyre damage and a possible blow out and for any uneven wear on the tread, which could indicate problems with your wheel balance, steering or suspension. TIP 5: PIT-STOPS WITHOUT PAIN Changing a tyre is invariably a miserable experience. If you opt to do it yourself rather than calling for roadside assistance, four key items will make it almost tolerable. Old gloves will keep your hands warm and clean. An old sheet will keep everything else clean when you’re sat on a filthy roadside and can be used to wrap the dirty flat tyre in the boot. An old coat will keep you dry it it’s raining and you won’t mind getting it dirty. Also a fully-charged, powerful torch is essential. Double check you have your locking wheel nut key, which you’ll need to remove the special, odd shaped security bolts fitted to some cars. Practising in the comfort of your own driveway makes it far easier, you’ll also learn where the jacking points are on the underside of your car, which are near impossible to find in the dark.

Are you stuck in a love rut? If you've been single for some time or your current relationship is going nowhere, try looking around your home for the answers. It may sound daft, but according to the ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui, your love life can be turned around with a few simple changes to your bedroom. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice believed to utilize the laws of both heaven (astronomy) and earth (geography) to help one improve life by receiving positive Chi or positive energy. A key element of Feng Shui is creating a smooth flow of Chi through your space. When it is blocked, the energy becomes stagnant and you are likely to feel blocked in life, and your enthusiasm for matters of the heart will be low. Balancing and correcting the chi of your bedroom could help to rectify this and bring your relationship back to life. Stephanie Roberts, Feng Shui expert and author of the Fast Feng Shui book series has provided some quick and easy ways to enhance your love life by improving the energy of your home. Make room for love. If you want to attract a new romantic partner or move a casual relationship closer to commitment make sure there is space for that person in your home. Look at your closets, shelves and dressers, especially in the bedroom. If they are all filled to capacity with your own stuff, make clearing some room for your current or future partner a priority. When you are done, take a moment to visualize your loved one's belongings finding a home there. De-clutter your bedroom When your bedroom is cluttered and untidy, the energy in there will be low

and slow. Clutter is a sure sign that Chi is stuck, so roll up your sleeves and clean the place up if you want to jump-start your love life. Ring a bell, shake a rattle, or clap your hands loudly around the room to clear out old, stale energy.

Don't work out in the bedroom. When you exercise in the bedroom, or store your sports equipment there, you bring the energy of hard work and exertion into your romance space. Do you want your relationship to feel like a tough workout? If not, move your workout stuff somewhere else and your relationship is likely to move along more smoothly. Remove old relationship energy Go through your home especially your bedroom - and remove anything that reminds you of past failed relationships. This could be an ex-boyfriend's old sweater you find in the cupboard, photographs of you with a previous partner or even a gift that reminds you of a giver with whom you are no longer in love. Remove negative imagery The images with which you surround yourself can have a powerful effect on your love life. Feng Shui clients who complain of difficulty finding romance have often surrounded themselves with images of a person alone. Inappropriate imagery includes anything that represents solitude, loneliness, aggression, hard work, conflict, or disagreement in any way. Open the door to love. Make sure both the front door of your home and the door to your bedroom open easily and completely. Doors that stick, squeak, or only open part way are blocking the flow of romantic energy and opportunity into your home. Move your bed If one side of your bed is against the wall, the person who sleeps on that side may feel confined or disempowered in the relationship. If possible, place the bed so there is equal space on either side, so you and your partner can find equal enjoyment in the relationship. The ideal position of the bed will be on the opposite side of the room from the door, but not directly in line with it. Bring romantic Chi into the bedroom If possible place romantic imagery on the wall opposite the foot of the bed (where you naturally look when lying in bed), and whatever area of the room you first see when you enter. Beautiful, romantic artwork is always good, as are fresh flowers and anything in pairs (such as birds, cherubs, candles, or decorative pillows).
