County spends $4.2 million for employee bonuses

By Skyler Baldwin Charleston County Council members on July 22 voted to approve a $4.2 million increase to the 2025-26 budget to give county employees a one-time $2,000 bonus to improve retention.

The measure passed its second reading with eight council members voting in favor and one voting against it. The sole vote against the bonuses came from council Vice-chair Larry Kobrovsky, who said he fears a $4 million expenditure could make it difficult for the county to avoid raising taxes on residents.

“This applies to all employees, and some of them make close to or in excess of $400,000 when you consider their benefits,” he said at the meeting. “I don’t think we would do this if it was our own money.

This takes away from our ability to not raise taxes on constituents. This is not just Monopoly money that we can just give out.”

Kobrovsky, who represents District 2 east of the Cooper River, proposed an amendment to the measure to limit the employees who would get the bonuses to only those making under $75,000. It was not clear how much that would alter the final price tag of the bonuses.

Former county Chairman Teddie Pryor of North Charleston questioned why the cutoff was suggested at $75,000 and that restricting the bonuses to lower-income employees punished people for making more.

County Administrator Bill Tuten said at the meeting the county is experiencing difficulties with employee retention across the board. Some council members agreed that an amendment was worth discussing, but ultimately decided the risk of losing employees warranted the higher cost.

“I am very sensitive to Kobrovsky’s thinking on this,” councilman Rob Wehrman, who represents District 3, said at the meeting. “It seems like we’re narrowly avoiding potential tax increases, and I do think we have an obligation to explore every possibility. … But if we have a mass exodus from the county, that’s going to create a whole host of other problems, including budgetary.”

Kobrovksy told the Charleston City Paper there were other things the county could prioritize for the budget.

“Why are we paying these people who

make six-figure salaries a $2,000 bonus when that could be used for any number of other things — roads, flooding prevention.

I just feel that it’s wrong.”

Council member Joe Boykin, who represents District 8 that includes Johns Island, told the City Paper that the county’s finance department was able to work the cost into the budget effectively in lieu of overall salary increases.

“This is just meant to get us through this budget cycle,” he said. “Next year, we’re going to have to come up with another way to keep county salaries competitive to keep the employees that we have.

“This was a sage decision and way to address this,” Boykin added. “I know they’re working literally as we speak to come up with another way to come up with ideas to address this more holistically over the long term.”

The $4.2 million will be taken from the county’s fund balance, the surplus left at the end of a budget year. The surplus builds from budgeted items that are ultimately not expended, such as salaries that are funded for positions left unfilled.

“We typically treat the fund balance as a means to cover one-time expenditures,” Boykin said. “For example, if we needed extra ambulances or some type of equipment that needed to be upgraded — we know it’s not a recurring item on our budgets.”

A third and final reading for the ordinance will be during the Aug. 26 council meeting.

“One of my favorite things to watch on YouTube these days are … court hearings where illegals are in court and ICE shows up to drag them out of court and deport them.”

U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., in a July 27 appearance on Fox Report Weekend.

Some on both sides of the political aisle, including from other Republicans, met Mace’s comments with criticism, calling her behavior “twisted” and “cruel.”

WaterWise is a new webpage offered

by Charleston as a one-stop shop for access to just about anything you want to know about water management in the city. While the new page at charleston-sc.gov/waterwise may be slow to load, it is a convenient way to link to resources that have been spread through the city’s website in the past.

“Our water systems are vital to Charleston’s future — from protecting our communities from flooding to ensuring safe, sustainable development,” Kaylan Koszela, the city’s director of resilience, said in a release.

Information found through the page includes guidance for homeowners on stormwater management and flood mitigation. There are links to severe weather tools, including links to realtime data on road closures and reports on flooding. The page also includes regulatory and permitting information as well as updates and maps on city water projects. —City Paper staff

USC launches new center pushing civics, civility

By Jack O’Toole A roiling national debate over the political and intellectual culture of American college campuses reached the University of South Carolina this week, as school officials announced plans for a new academic center focused on civics and civility.

And depending on who you talk to, it’s either a meaningful step toward restoring rigor and comity in American scholarly life — or part of a well-financed national conservative effort to reshape the academy in its own image.

Nevertheless, school leaders are strongly backing the initiative, dubbed the Center for American Civic Leadership and Public Discourse.

“Studying the American civic order and teaching our students to be good citizens should be a core function of higher education in America,” said Thad Westbrook, chair of the USC Board of Trustees in a release. “Over the past few years, we have strengthened our policies supporting free speech on campus, and we believe this center will elevate that work with a renewed focus on civil discourse.”

USC President Michael Amiridis added the center would help the school meet its mission of molding graduates who can succeed and lead in their communities.

“The value this new academic center brings is its focus on equipping students with the knowledge, perspectives and reasoning skills for meaningful interactions as citizens and community leaders,” he said.

A USC spokesman confirmed the center is being funded through the president’s office in its first year, but that fundraising will be a major goal going forward.

A national trend with a political agenda?

The new USC program is one of more than a dozen civics centers that have sprung up at

American universities over the past decade, many in red states and all modeled on the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton.

Founded in 2000 by widely-respected conservative scholar Robert P. George, the Madison program sponsors nonpartisan conferences, lectures and fellowships, while managing a track of courses dedicated to American civic order, according to its website. In interviews, George has said the program models a classical mode of scholarship based on “reason, evidence and arguments.”

Early funders of the Madison program reportedly included well-known conservative benefactors like Steve Forbes, the John M. Olin Foundation and the Bradley Foundation.

But the debate over civics centers like USC’s is about more than funding or partisan affiliation. It’s a clash of frameworks — one rooted in traditional civic ideals, the other in concerns about equity and representation.

Supporters describe spaces for reasoned debate and intellectual diversity. Critics see structures shaped by imbalances of power and influence.

That tension leads scholars like Lauren Lassabe Shepherd — a historian at Indiana University and author of Resistance from the Right: Conservatives and the Campus Wars in Modern America — to question not just the funders but the larger project itself.

“The centers have a political agenda, no matter their claims to neutrality,” she said in a July 24 email interview with Statehouse Report. “Who is funding their projects? What other projects do those benefactors fund? Who is accepting the invitations for these events?”

Shepherd places the trend in a longer conservative tradition of shaping higher education — one, she argues, that has often worked to limit academic freedom.

State unveils new driver’s license, ID card designs

The S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) officially unveiled designs July 29 for the state’s new driver’s licenses and identification cards. The updated cards, which will begin rolling out this fall, will have enhanced security features and iconic visuals celebrating the Palmetto State.

The new cards showcase South Carolina’s heritage and natural beauty with imagery including the Statehouse, the Palmetto Tree and the crescent from the state flag as well as tributes to the state flower (yellow jessamine), bird (Carolina wren) and reptile (loggerhead sea turtle).

Additional features include a stronger material that won’t peel apart and the use of laser engraving and multicolor printing to make it more difficult to counterfeit.

“These new licenses and ID cards showcase the Palmetto State while providing citizens with greater protection against becoming victims of identity fraud,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “We hope that South Carolinians will look on these new designs with pride and confidence.”

With the new cards, the SCDMV will change from printing licenses at its offices. Instead it will transition to a centralized card issuance process using facilities certified for secure credential production. At offices, drivers will be sent home with temporary certificates, valid for up to 30 days, and their new IDs will be shipped to their home within 15 business days. —City Paper staff

The city of Charleston on July 24 announced two major recreation projects launching as part of its parks and recreation master plan, which was funded by a $70 million parks bond referendum that voters overwhelmingly approved in 2023.

The two projects, one in West Ashley and one on Johns Island, represent the first major investments from the referendum.

Charleston City Council last week approved $3.3 million to begin the design phase for both projects.

In West Ashley, the existing W.L. Stephens Recreation Center will be demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art facility.

The new main building will span between 24,000 and 28,000 square feet and include: • A large indoor pool • An adjacent therapy pool for swim lessons, water aerobics and rehabilitation • A multi-purpose community room • Office and support space for staff • A new, modern playground for families • New tennis and basketball courts The existing Miracle League Baseball Field — which provides inclusive access to children and adults with disabilities — will remain and continue to serve the community.

Meanwhile, Johns Island residents will get a city-operated recreation facility that is about 50,000 square feet just off Maybank Highway near the Hayes Park development.

It will include: • A large indoor pool and therapy pool • An indoor gym with two full basketball courts • Cardio and group fitness rooms • A multi-purpose room • Two classroom spaces • A catering kitchen • Outdoor pickleball courts • Outdoor basketball courts • An inclusive playground and splash pad “Johns Island has waited a long time for this kind of investment,” District 3 Councilman Jim McBride said in a press release. “This project will create an anchor for community life, health and connection on the island.”

Both facilities are being designed by Charleston-based architectural firm LS3P. Charleston City Council is expected to review construction contracts in August. Permitting will take about one year. Construction on both sites is expected to begin next summer and take 18 months to complete.

Community engagement will begin this fall, with the city and LS3P hosting concept presentations and public input sessions to gather feedback and incorporate resident priorities into the final designs. —Skyler Baldwin

A West Ashley man on July 22 reportedly tried to steal a plexiglass case filled with vape devices from a Sam Rittenberg convenience store. He quickly discovered the display case was tethered to the floor after lifting it and attempting to run out of the store with the entire case. Well, we certainly admire the gusto. Maybe start with a single pen next time?

Smile and nod Mount Pleasant police on July 21 stopped a driver on U.S. Highway 17 for failing to stop at a light before turning off the highway. During the stop, the driver told police his registration and insurance were “destroyed due to the rain,” and police noted marijuana residue found throughout the car as well as two empty gun cases in the trunk. We bet you can guess what happened next — yep, they let him off with a warning.

Double oops A North Charleston woman on July 20 reportedly attempted to steal about $600 worth of groceries from a Rivers Avenue store by stuffing them into reusable shopping bags in the cart.

City police caught her and searched her, finding all of the stolen items as well as a small baggie with a “small amount of white powder.” Now we’re not jumping to conclusions, but that sounds like a real problem.

Let’s not be the monster truck jerk parked across two spaces in the lot M

ost people know how to park in a lot or along the street — you pull into the middle of one space and turn off the car.

But every now and then, somebody who owns a monster truck or luxury car thinks they’re so special that they pull diagonally into two spaces — just so no one else will park close enough to (God forbid!) ding their door.

More and more, Americans are seeing their country acting like that jerk in the monster truck, domestically and internationally.

They see a Congress smitten by a president who horsewhips its leaders to push through legislation that is hundreds of pages long and has negative impacts to millions with most members never even reading it. At the same time, they see congressional lemmings so cowed by the same president that they adjourn, instead of considering a sex scandal that might tar that president, a convicted felon.

They see rampant graft, corruption and a steady stream of lies from this president who constantly uses his pulpit to bully, smear and ridicule. How can acceptance of a free Qatari 747-8 jet which will cost $400 million to upgrade and ultimately be donated to the president’s library for personal use be considered anything other than an in-the-open bribe?

They see a United States Supreme Court so cowed by politics that it is letting America’s much-vaunted principle of rule of law slip away, eroding like sand from a beach during a hurricane.

They see cuts to vital public agencies — from forecasting services at the National Hurricane Center to life-saving research grants at the National Institutes of Health — in a disgusting attempt to cripple the government that serves the people.

They see the U.S. Immigration and Customs Service morphing into a fear-mongering law enforcement agency that will get $150 billion over four years — higher annual funding than the militaries in 15 other countries, according to Newsweek. At the same time, they’re increasingly horrified by ICE agents who now wear masks when making mass raids that lead to deportations of law-abiding immigrants who want to be part of the American dream. Isn’t it surprising how the Republican party of law and order is fueling citizen fear of law enforcement? Not a good sign in a country that cherishes freedom.

On top of all of this, they hear a vice president who wants to take America back to the era of Jim Crow. Here’s how historian Heather Cox Richardson described it in late July: “On July 5, 2025, Vice President J.D. Vance told an audience at the Claremont Institute he rejected the idea that being an American simply meant agreeing with the principles articulated in the Declaration of Independence.

He complained not only that such a definition would include too many people, but also that it would exclude those who disagreed with it, even if their ancestors had fought in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.” Janis Joplin once crooned, “Freedom is just another word for nothin’ left to lose. Nothin’, don’t mean nothin’ hon’ if it ain’t free, no-no.”

We have a lot to lose. Let’s keep freedom strong and fight those who want our government to park like that monster truck. Let’s not die a death of a thousand cuts.

CHECKLIST of community objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities: 1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infra structure and make smart climate change decisions about develop ment, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic.

Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education.

Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public.

Be transparent in public business.

Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation.

If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale.

Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan.

Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage.

Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

Two views of South Carolina more than 100 years apart By Andy Brack Just over 103 years ago, a German immigrant who grew up in Charleston published a flowery analysis of South Carolina as part of a two-year, 48-part series

by The Nation magazine. The collection showcased “the distinctive colors of life” in a project dubbed “These United States.”

Fast forward to the present. In a special two-month issue of the magazine, The Nation has another go in looking at the state of the republic in a report that’s vastly different — “These Dis-United States.”

“50 of our best writers and artists depict local textures, practices, landmarks and institutions everywhere being gutted, steamrolled, defunded, eviscerated. Here we get first hand testimony, from Maine to Hawaii, of the acceleration of a decades-long project to hollow out government at every level — and of the devastating effects of that project on our national life,” contributing editor Richard Kreitner writes in the opening essay of the magazine’s 160th anniversary issue.

While the original essays in the 1920s highStates were lighted what made states distinctive, they seemed to assume the “united” states worked toward places where the common goal of promoting and advancing experiments could democracy. States were places where experiments could occur to achieve overarching goals that knit occur to achieve together Americans who lived in vastly different circumstances. While these essays seemed generally to overarching goals have a buoyancy and overall hope about the country, that knit together the new 2025 essays look at what’s happening across the “bruised and battered land,” ending with Americans who lived a call for the country to give “a new birth of freedom in vastly different … making an old country anew.”

Both essays about the Palmetto State make intercircumstances. esting reading, mainly because they don’t seem to conform to the overall theme of either project.

A century ago, the magazine’s then-drama critic, Ludwig Lewisohn, essentially bemoaned the divisions in South Carolina between Charleston and the Upstate. His essay wasn’t about unity in South Carolina or hope.

Rather, Lewisohn, not a household name today, described cultural decay in Charleston, once a flourishing home to snobbish elites who he said wrote poetry and studied Greek and Latin. He lamented control of the state by Upstate agrarians with the “mean barbarism of sharp business men and Ku Klux Klansmen.” He complained the state’s new leaders, spurred by “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman, “brought neither freedom nor enlightenment” but sentimentalized the old South.

In some ways, Lewisohn’s criticisms of the 1920s “New South” in South Carolina don’t seem all that different from criticisms of the divisions being caused by MAGA acolytes across the nation today.

ou might not like a peanut butter and onion sandwich in the middle of the work day, but Ernest Hemingway apparently did.

Writers, as it happens, eat all sorts of weird, tasty and fun things as snacks as they write — or try to get past writer’s block, as we found when we talked to local authors about comfort foods.

From New York Times bestsellers and Pulitzer Prize finalists to James Beard Award winners, Charleston has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to those who create with the pen and those who create with the knife. And as it turns out, many of our locally based writers love cooking and food as much as they love to write.

When it comes to snacking while writing, there is a theme amongst writers: nuts.

Pulitzer Prize finalist James M. Scott, who lives in Mount Pleasant’s Old Village, grabs an apple and some peanuts or peanut butter which is just enough to keep the hunger away because he doesn’t want a heavy stomach to slow him down. Willingham turns to a sliced Gala apple topped with peanut butter, sliced almonds and some mini chocolate chips.

Asiah Mae, poet laureate of Charleston, loves a “snacky plate” while writing at home on the peninsula. A recent plate consisted of Rainier cherries, blackberries, black olives, pickles, a beet hummus dip, carrots and boiled peanuts, all sourced from Joseph Fields Farm.

James Island resident Victoria Benton Frank, whose second book The Violet Hour publishes on August 12, says she doesn’t eat while writing because her fingers get too dirty, but she binges wintergreen mints and chugs Diet Coke with lemon. She says she also takes her lunch breaks very seriously and always sits down to eat.

“It’s usually Campbell’s alphabet soup or a romaine salad with shredded Italian blend cheese from Trader Joe’s with a ton of fresh cracked black pepper,” she said.

In terms of junk foods, Charleston authors have great taste. Willingham has a weakness for ice cream while Mae grabs gummy bears, Biscoff cookies, cheese puffs or the Circus Peanut, a “go-to granny candy.” Frank grabs Twizzlers and Scott goes for chips, pretzels or anything he can rustle up in the pantry.

“I’ll eat a whole bag of Ruffles in one sitting, and then I swear off chips forever, a

But it’s not just snacking and junk food, of course. Many of these authors cook at home while they’re writing. A common thread is a reliance on a crockpot or instant pot for nofuss recipes. Mae sears marinated chicken thighs and puts them in the crockpot with onions, peppers, cream of mushroom and cream of chicken for six hours in the morning so it’s a worryfree meal. Once finished, Mae eats it over rice.

Willingham said she often makes Mediterranean food for dinner. One favorite is a chicken shawarma gyro bowl in the instant pot. Meanwhile, Frank relies on a crockpot Mississippi roast since it’s an easy recipe that allows her to have dinner ready as soon as her kids get home from school.

Cooking and writing both take creativity, diligence and focus plus a dash of something extra.

“Both are acts of magic,” said Brewington.

“Both cooking and writing mean taking everyday normal items like the things you find in your kitchen cabinet or the words you find in the dictionary and mixing them together to make something completely different and delicious and exciting.

“And no one else, no matter how hard they try, can write a story or bake a lasagna exactly like you did. Cooking and writing are both creative disciplines that require a lot of practice and a lot of swings and misses before you come up with something really awesome to share with your family and friends.”

1. Get some rice going on the stove.

2. Mix together some Greek yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, cumin, paprika, coriander, salt, pepper, turmeric and cinnamon. Toss in chicken thighs and sliced white onions and coat everything with the yogurt mixture.

For the best flavor, marinate 20 minutes to 2 hours.

3. Put everything in an instant pot and cook on high for 12 to 15 minutes, letting the pressure release naturally.

4. Shred the chicken, and if you want your shawarma crispy, spread it out onto a sheet pan and broil it for a few minutes.

5. Spoon rice into a bowl. Then add the shredded chicken. Some good toppings include sliced tomatoes, avocado, pickled red onions, cucumbers, hummus, feta, tzatziki and pita wedges.

Victoria Benton Frank’s Mississippi Roast Ingredients • 1 large beef roast • 1 packet of Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning • 1 packet McCormick au jus seasoning • 1 jar of sliced pepperoncini peppers (save juice) • 1 stick butter • 1 cup of water Directions 1. Put the beef in the pot.

2. Mix together the au jus and the ranch seasoning and then sprinkle over the top of the roast.

3. Place the stick of butter on top of the roast.

4. Pour in the peppers all around and on top of the roast including the juice from the jar.

5. Cook covered on low and slow for 8 to 10 hours.

Author’s note: You can eat it with mashed potatoes.

You can eat it shredded over noodles.

You can eat it shredded on a roll with melted provolone cheese.

You can eat it in a taco.

You can eat it with your hands right out of the pot.

George Brewington, author of middle grade and adult-fantasy fiction, calls Folly Beach home. While writing, he depends on coffee to get him going, something many may find relatable.

“I tend to write throughout the day, usually starting early in the morning,” he said.

“Really early, like 4 a.m., before my kids are awake and able to distract me. This means coffee. I really can’t do much of anything without coffee.”

Gervais Hagerty, born and raised in Charleston, published her debut novel In Polite Company in 2021. She writes first thing in the morning while drinking way too much fresh brewed coffee with oat milk. Her lunches are heavy on vegetables.

“Generally I eat avocado on toast with lemon and tons of red pepper flakes,” she said. “Or sometimes it’s a salad made of canned fish and kale from our garden.”

Smithey celebrates 10 years of cast-iron cookware

It all started with a skillet sold by one man: craftsman and entrepreneur Isaac Morton.

In 2015, Morton founded North Charlestonbased cookware company Smithey Ironware Co. to share the experience of cooking with classic cast-iron pieces. He sold the first handcrafted Smithey that same year as the company’s only employee.

But since setting out to recreate the cookware popular in the late 19th century, Morton has created a legacy all of his own.

Today, 65 employees power Smithey and send its premium products to 550 retailers nationwide. And it’s all still made in North Charleston — from dutch ovens to spatulas, griddles to roasters.

As Morton caps off a decade of innovation and expansion, he shared more about Smithey’s evolution and what the next 10 years hold.

Creating quality cookware for the next generation

The inspiration to launch a cookware company came to Morton as more of a slow burn than a fiery spark — which is fitting for a manufacturer specializing in cast iron, a material famous for heating up slowly yet retaining heat remarkably well to ensure

the perfect sear or bake.

“The realization that there was a business opportunity dawned on me gradually from about 2011 to 2015,” said Morton, who was busy restoring vintage cast iron pieces as a hobby at the time. “The hallmark of vintage cast iron was its smooth surface finish and distinct branding. I was curious why no one was making modern cast iron in a vintage style.”

So he set out to do just that by opening his very own smithy, a workshop for metalworkers, housed in the historic Navy Yard industrial campus adjacent to Riverfront Park. There, he experimented with principles of geometry and mass to figure out how

to recreate a skillet with a naturally nonstick surface and a silky copper-like sheen. It’s this vintage-inspired characteristic which sets Smithey pieces visually apart from other cast iron you’ll see on the shelves.

Famous cooks took note first. Soon high-end culinary distributors, including Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Goop and more, began snatching up Smithey skillets to sell nationwide, eager for more. In 2018, Smithey delivered: Morton partnered with blacksmiths next door to its production facility in the Navy Yard to add carbon steel cookware to the collection.

(Fun fact: When Morton tried to trademark the name “Smithy” for his new company, it was considered too close to the common name Smith, so wasn’t permitted. He compromised by adding an “e” in front of the “y” and the rest, as they say, is history.)

Expanding into service to keep cast iron king

Over the years, the opportunity for Smithey to dispel myths around cast-iron cookware and make it more approachable began to stand out to Morton.

“As we’ve matured, I’ve realized that we have an opportunity to be teachers and helpers to people that may be intimidated

For example, caring for cast-iron cookware takes more time.

A la carte What’s happening

Work happening inside the Smithey workshop “You have to keep it dry, oil its surface, and scrape it down every now and then,” Morton said. But with the extra care comes extra perks. “I often say that cast iron is like a garden or classic car — the more you care for it, the more appreciation and pride you derive from it.”

To deepen Smithey’s connection with customers, in May 2021, it launched an engraving service to offer the option to personalize any pan. Then a year later, Smithey opened a cast iron restoration shop to encourage cooking with vintage cast iron again. Now anyone can send an old piece to Smithey, and it will remove rust and carbon build-up and reseason for a smooth and even finish so it’s ready for the stove.

Investing in Charleston, Smithey’s future

In 2024, Smithey opened a public showroom located at 1061 Everglades Ave. for people to shop for cookware, tools and accessories.

Smithey also made headlines with a $3.1 million investment to create a new distribution facility, as well as 16 new jobs.

“I’m most proud of pacing our growth,” Morton said. “We have grown a lot over the last 10 years and kept up with it by investing in people, equipment and space.

As he looks ahead, Morton said he plans to stay the course making big and small improvements to Smithey’s core cookware lineup. He’s most excited to continue mixing color and materials, inspired by the brasscolored stainless steel handles featured on the recently released Double Burner Griddle, to keep cast iron the core of the future.

“I hope the company remains true to its purpose and values,” Morton said. “It’s something we talk about a lot here. If we do those things, our customers and our team will be well-served.”

Imagine, if you will, an unassuming warehouse in a no-frills industrial strip on the outskirts of a South Carolina town. Make your way through its metal doors and you’ll enter a new dimension — a pixilated netherworld existing in some liminal space between flesh-and-bones and figments of the imagination.

In this screen-whirring, technicolor terrain, the latest breakthroughs of rapidlyevolving A.I. technology rub shoulders with the human race.

Here, you’ll bear witness to the burgeoning artistic bromance between Danny McBride, creator of The Righteous Gemstones, and Beeple, the Charleston area-based digital artist known for the staggering $69.3 million sale of his digital NFT work.

It was Beeple, aka Mike Winkelmann, who first trotted out the idea of a partnership to McBride.

“I was like, it’d be cool if we worked on something and he was really excited about Spoleto,” the artist said, flagging the city’s annual international arts festival.

And with that, we have now entered this unprecedented meeting of the minds, human and otherwise.

Billed as an “AI Live Experiments,” the work is set to take place for two performances only on Oct. 3 and 4. Synthetic Theatre represents the latest of Beeple Studios’ recent string of live events.

Past happenings have gathered crowds for the presidential election, fired up game nights and celebrated the first bitcoin slice of pizza.

“It’s been really cool to see the enthusiasm and people coming and discovering the space and learning about digital art,” said Mike Winkelmann, aka Beeple.

Beeple Studios has also been partnering with local arts organizations, bringing in diverse artists and people in the community to be a part of these events. It has featured live painting and has also worked with arts hubs including the Gibbes Museum of Art, Redux Contemporary Art Center and Public Works in Summerville. Plans are underway for an event in the coming months that will involve as many as 40 visual artists.

“We’re really trying to bring everybody into the fold with these,” he said.

Live with McBride

Even so, the event with McBride is a departure from past events, as it folds in a performance, which will be flanked by hour-long pre- and post-receptions. Winkelmann said it’s a departure for McBride, too.

“What’s crazy, too, is he’s not done any theater… definitely not in Charleston, but (he has) not anywhere done any sort of live

theater thing like this.”

The two sparked a partnership a couple of years ago when McBride visited Beeple Studios and then booked it for an opening cast party for the final season of The Righteous Gemstones. Like AI itself, that relationship continues to evolve.

Winkelmann was already a superfan, having followed all of McBride’s television series, starting with Eastbound & Down through to The Righteous Gemstones, which this spring completed its final season.

“Everything he’s done is just absolutely fucking hilarious. Even just him showing up to the studio, it was like, oh my God,” Winkelmann said, adding that to “be like doing something with them is just absolutely like, what the fuck? Like this is like crazy. So, yeah, it’s a massive, massive honor.”

While the two artists’ disciplines and visions diverge, they are known to leverage high-level skills to deliver some bracingly bold content. Compare, for instance, the bloated bare-butt world that leaders populating Beeple’s online “Everydays” series put up against a butt-naked Walton Goggins as Brother Billy going commando on a pair of water skis in Gemstones.

together in the Los Angeles-based improv scene. In Charleston, they mounted six sold-out performances at the Piccolo Fringe Festival in Charleston with Tennessee Williams UnScripted and Doozy!

Beeple, who was in the house at one show, said he assumed most of it would be scripted with a bit of little improv.

Only by talking to the performers afterwards did he find out otherwise.

“It was like, oh my God! I was just honestly completely blown away because it wasn’t just funny — it was the way the story arc was so perfect and ended on this poignant note.”

The Athens, Ga. quintet Drive-By Truckers will make a triumphant return Aug. 5 and 6 to The Windjammer on Isle of Palms.

The Truckers, led by singers/songwriters/guitarists Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, formed in 1996 creating a heavy-but-enlightened brand of Southern rock with as much intelligence as volume.

And it spent a lot of years honing that sound at The Windjammer.

In a recent conversation with the Charleston City Paper, Hood reminisced about his favorite Windjammer memories over the years — and that’s when things got a little blurry. In its early years, the band had a reputation for partying as hard as it played.

“Oh God, I don’t know what I can tell you,” Hood said. “Let me think. See, we used to play there back in the early wilder days back in the early 2000s. Back when Jason Isbell was in the band (Isbell left in 2007), there was a night where he … maybe I shouldn’t talk about that.”

Hood added, “For sure, these shows are going to be a good time and hopefully the weather will be good.”

Hood said he is also excited the band is playing two shows, which gives the Truckers room to stretch, both onstage and off.

“I love a two-nighter,” he said. “Because then we actually can spend a little time in the town and not just rush in and out.

And so those are always my favorite shows.

Typically two nights are both my favorite, because it affects both shows in a good way.”

And if you love guitars and aggression, you don’t want to miss the supporting acts. On this swing, called the Charm & Decadence tour, the band shares the stage with the Rhode Island alt-rockers Deer Tick and the Southern-fried punk rockers Thelma & The Sleaze.

Add that to the massive guitar muscle of Drive By Truckers, and you’re going to need earplugs for these shows.

“It’s funny, because we’re friends with Deer Tick,” Hood said, “and we’ve played with them a number of times over the years, but we’ve never actually toured with them. But I’d go see them because they’re a fun band and I love their music.

So when this tour with them came up, we jumped at it.”

“And then adding Thelma & The Sleaze was like putting whipped cream and a cherry on top because I love that band,” he

added. “It is really one of my favorite young bands out there. So it’s a fun show all night.”

The pair of shows also give the Truckers a chance to move away from the style of shows it played last year. The band performed all of its critically-acclaimed 2001 album Southern Rock Opera on a tour last year, and as proud as Hood is of that album (a concept album loosely based on the rise and fall of Lynyrd Skynyrd), he said playing the same songs every night wasn’t what the Drive By Truckers is about.

“It was fun to go back and revisit it after 23 years,” Hood said. “People were excited about it, and I was happy that something we did so long ago was something that people still wanted to go see.

“But there’s a reason that that’s not what we do all the time. We don’t have a set list, so it’s different every night.”

And if you want to see the Truckers live, The Windjammer show is going to be your last chance for a while. The band hasn’t released an album since 2022’s Welcome 2 Club XIII, and Hood said that’s about to change.

“The tour is a fun thing to do this summer for sure,” he said, “but then after this year, we’re taking a bit of a hiatus because we’re wanting to make a record next year. So after this, we’re going to lay low until we get a new record out, because it’s been too long.”

Such an exploration comes at a moment when AI is appearing in surprising new places, among them in social media feeds of the current presidential administration. In July, Trump pushed out an AI video on Truth Social that was created by a MAGA supporter and depicted Barack Obama handcuffed by the current president in the Oval Office.

While some may view AI as being at odds with what it means to be human, Winkelmann is not among them.

“I think AI is actually the most human piece of technology we’ve ever built because it’s based on all of the outputs of humans,” he said. “What seems more human? Chat GPT or Windows 95?”

He points out that it’s even possible to argue with Chat GPT, get pushback and bring it around to your perspective. For Winkelmann, the more salient question about the impact of AI is not how it makes something real from artificial intelligence but how it calls into question our perception of real content.

At receptions before and after the October performances, audience members will have chances to further engage with the technology.

One thing that is real for the artist is the importance that Beeple Studios places on gathering humans in the Charleston community in the same room.

“That’s a big, big part of what we’re doing,” the artist said. “We are already in our own world mentally, too much, so figuring out ways to bring everybody together and have a shared experience is something I think people really want.”

According to the email announcement, tickets will be available soon. With around a 300-person capacity per each of the two shows, the studios advised in its announcement to save the date, cautioning “you are not gonna want to miss or people will FOR SURE call you a piece of crap!!!!”
