A rosary for Irish immigrants buried at Charleston’s old burial ground along the Ashley River will include a reading of the names of the dead. Today, The Citadel’s Hagood Stadium (above) and Harmon Field sit atop part of the 22-acre site.

Remembering Irish immigrants buried at Tower Hill site

The Most Rev. Jacques Fabre-Jeune, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston, will perform a rosary service at Harmon Field on July 9 for Irish immigrants who were buried at a potter’s field between 1841 and 1927 on Charleston’s west side.

Bagpipe melodies will fill the air during the 5:30 p.m. service at Line Street and Hagood Avenue. People attending the hour-long service will be asked to recite the names of 214 people of Irish descent who were buried at the site, said Julie Bowling, a volunteer researcher.

Bowling has led an effort to honor the men and women interred in the Tower Hill Cemetery, a 22-acre burial ground. It is estimated that about 23,000 to 26,000 orphans, the poor, free and enslaved people, immigrants, seamen and Confederate soldiers were interred in unmarked graves at the site bounded by President, Congress and Line streets.

Bowling said American humorist Evan Esar once said that ‘ “the only place where you can find equality is in the cemetery.’ That, of course, is utter nonsense.”

While old Charleston’s elite lie in marble mausoleums or under carved angels many of “those who actually built our city — the enslaved, the immigrants, the workers — lie under buildings, bleachers and parking lots,” she stressed.

The Irish in Charleston

The website CharlestonIrish.com tells the story of the Irish in the city and explains why they came to the Lowcountry.

Catholics dominated the Irish migration to the city between 1845 and 1855 when more than one million people left Ireland for North America to escape the Great Famine.

By the 1850s, the Irish had established communities throughout the city especially in the Anson and Radcliffe boroughs.

The 1860 census lists 4,996 nativeborn Irish in Charleston, primarily as poor unskilled and semiskilled workers, according to the website. They made up 8% of the city’s population and 14% of the White residents.

Earlier this year, the Haitian-born FabreJeune expressed gratitude for the immi-

Keep pets safe over hot weekend

Lowcountry animal shelters are urging pet owners to take precautions to keep their animals safe, as shelters across the country report a spike in lost or injured pets following fireworks shows, cookouts and other hot holiday weekend festivities.

Excessive heat and certain foods pose a danger for pets.

Signs your pet might be feeling anxious during the festivities include shaking, chattering jaws, excessive drooling, hiding or having their tail tucked beneath them.

To prevent your pet from fleeing because of fireworks, experts recommend owners keep their pets in a secluded environment, like a crate or somewhere inside, or to try drowning out the noise by turning on a fan or playing soothing music.

grants in the Diocese of Charleston. In a letter to the diocese, he wrote that immigrants “through their goodness and faithfulness, contribute so much to our Church and to our country.

“Over several generations, immigrants have settled within the diocese from many foreign nations,” he wrote. “Catholics from different continents have enriched our diocese with their great faith and devotion.”

Land repurposed

In 1927, Charleston used the Tower Hill burial grounds for a football stadium and a park, but did not relocate the bodies, Bowling said. The Citadel relocated the remains of 341 Confederate sailors in 2005, but every few years, human remains are found and relocated, she said. “In other words, the bodies are still there,” she added.

The city made a mistake to use the land for a football stadium and park, she said.

“I am not suggesting that any structures should be torn down or any bodies be relocated,” she pledged. “Nor am I implying that (the city or college) are in any way culpable for decisions that were made nearly one hundred years ago.”

The college and the city, she said, should not build on the site again and stop parking cars over the graves. Bowling said the col

South Carolinians could lose under new Trump tax-and-spend megabill

Ahead: Fewer insured, more

hungry, higher power bills

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed its version of President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” the 940-page tax and spending megabill that Republicans say will lower taxes and spark new economic growth in South Carolina and across the country. But with the legislation now headed back to a closely divided U.S. House for a final vote, nonpartisan analysts told the Charleston City Paper that South Carolinians should expect to see major economic impacts if it becomes law.

Those impacts, they say, would likely include lower income taxes, higher health-care and electric bills, fewer rural hospitals and nursing homes, and a slowdown in the state’s fast-growing electric vehicle (EV) and battery industry as federal subsidies disappear.

But perhaps the biggest long term impact, economists note, is the bill’s bottom-line budget math — roughly $5 trillion in new and extended tax cuts, $1.5 trillion in spending reductions, and $3.5 trillion in new debt. They say all of that spending could ultimately lead to higher consumer interest rates on items like home mortgages, car loans and credit card purchases.

According to supporters, including S.C.’s senior U.S. senator, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, the tradeoffs in the bill would strengthen the country.

“If you like higher taxes, open borders, a weak military and unchecked government spending, this bill is your nightmare,” Graham said in a June 28 press release. “The Big Beautiful Bill contains all of President Trump’s domestic economic priorities.”

But Democratic opponents like S.C. 6th District Rep. James Clyburn say the bill is a giveaway to wealthy Americans at the expense of the poor and middle class.

“I call it the Huge Ugly Bill. Republicans

lege and the city should collaborate with the community to create a memorial garden or gardens at the site.

In July 2022, a Citadel spokesman told the Charleston City Paper the college has helped identify and memorialize those who were buried at the site more than a century ago. The college used ground-penetrating

are taking food and health care from the poorest to pay for a massive tax cut for the richest,” he said.

From the start, Trump has argued the bill will unleash the American economy and cut the deficit. But economists, energy experts and social service providers say the big picture is complicated — and that understanding exactly what the average South Carolina resident would be giving up in exchange for a modest tax cut is key to judging the bill’s overall merit.

Higher electric bills, fewer high-paying EV jobs

In response to a direct request from Trump, Republicans in the Senate added several items to the House-passed megabill targeting renewable energy production, including the elimination of several Biden-era renewable energy subsidies and a new tax on most solar and wind equipment.

Shortly before Tuesday’s Senate vote, Charleston’s Eddy Moore of the Alliance for Clean Energy said the bill would do real damage to the state’s economic and energy prospects.

“Around the country and in South Carolina specifically, we’ll see higher electric bills and a lot of job losses,” Moore said, noting that renewables are the state’s fastestgrowing power source.

Most concerning, he said, is the rollback of federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credits and battery investments, which new S.C. factories and plants are relying on .

“This bill is threatening literally the largest economic development projects in our state’s history,” Moore said. “It’s almost certain we’ll lose some of these companies.”

Fewer care centers — and fewer insured

While the House and Senate versions of the budget bill include deep healthcare cuts that would threaten South Carolina hospitals and nursing homes, the Senate’s provision eliminating the so-called provider tax,

radar on the Johnson Hagood Stadium and surrounding structures, but no graves were detected, the spokesman said.

The college said it has installed a plaque at the stadium to memorialize those who were buried in the city’s cemetery.

A list of the dead

Bowling created a Friends of Tower Hill Cemetery website that lists some of the

which S.C. uses to unlock billions in federal funding, is seen as a particular danger.

In fact, according to S.C. Hospital Association President and CEO Thornton Kirby, the move would create a $2.4 billion hole in South Carolina’s Medicaid budget, which provides a major source of revenue for state hospitals.

“Many hospitals would not be able to survive the way they are without financial help,” Kirby told S.C. Public Radio on June 26. “If you take $2.4 billion out of the state’s hospital community, you’re going to see layoffs, you’re going to see service reductions, and [in] the worst case scenario, closures.”

Further stress on S.C. hospitals and nursing homes would come from the bill’s broader Medicaid and health-care cuts, which would force emergency rooms to provide uncompensated care to about 230,000 residents who stand to lose their insurance coverage.

“These cuts would threaten providers across the state, for whom Medicaid dollars basically pay the rent,” said Columbia-based policy analyst John Ruoff.

Less food assistance, ‘more hungry people’

Another major source of cost savings in the GOP plan comes from cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which provides food aid to more than 40 million Americans. The savings would mostly result from additional work requirements and shifting some costs onto state governments.

About 145,000 South Carolinians would lose some or all food assistance under the bill, according to S.C. Appleseed Legal Justice Center, which works on behalf of poor and working class families throughout the state.

“With the increased work requirements and all the new paperwork, SNAP is going to be more costly for the state to administer, with fewer people being fed,” said Appleseed Director of Policy Sue Berkowitz.

As of press time, the budget megabill was headed back to the U.S. House.

Blotter of the Week

Charleston police on June 26 announced the arrest of an “aspiring influencer” after a months-long reckless driving investigation after he posted social media videos of himself weaving through traffic at 140 mph on a motorcycle. He faces 35 charges including racing, having an uninsured vehicle, driving without a license and more. We understand the need for speed, but not the need to record your own unsafe crimes and post them on the internet.

Hell, yeah

North Charleston police on June 18 reported an investigation regarding several homeless people who had been “hanging out” under a bridge near Hawthorne Drive. Police noted the people started fires, were “fornicating,” and used narcotics. Sounds almost perfect. Throw in some rock ’n’ roll and we’ll be there in 15.

PSA

Mount Pleasant police on June 22 chased a speeding vehicle across the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge into downtown Charleston. According to a police report, the vehicle changed lanes multiple times without signalling while driving at more than 90 mph. Eventually, the driver pulled over, and officers arrested him for, well, a lot of stuff. Reminder: If you’re going to run from the cops, you better get away.

names of the interred. The descendants of the dead should know where their ancestors were laid to rest, she stressed.

From the pages of the Returns of Deaths within the City of Charleston Bowling has compiled more than 5,000 burials at the site from 1841 to 1868. Most of the records identify the deceased by name, but many of them are nameless.

Guide is on the water, even on days off

Captain Frank Riccio, a Charleston-based boat expedition guide, said every day on his job feels rewarding, especially when he’s leading tours with visitors.

“Sun’s coming up, you don’t have to think about much except having a good day, locating some fish and learning about a new group of people,” Riccio said.

Riccio started his boat tour company, Lowcountry Coastal Excursions, 10 years ago, but he said it offers more than just fishing.

“Anything you want to do, from going to the beach and just having lunch with your family to fossil hunts,” Riccio, 43, told the Charleston City Paper in a recent interview at Shem Creek.

“It’s very specific to the type of group that comes to Charleston. It’s lots of bachelorette parties, lots of families that want to go fishing and lots of families that just want to go on a sunset cruise.”

On weekends off, Ricchio said he still gets on his boat with friends and family — even if he doesn’t have a charter. He said there’s just something about being on the water that

makes him forget about his worries.

“You forget about everything when you get on the water.”

Highlights of a weekend day in his words (lightly edited for space):

An early bite. First thing in the morning, I make the bed and get the dog out. I think about making breakfast or getting breakfast. If I go get breakfast, I usually go to Page’s Okra Grill or Johnny’s. While I walk the dog, I sometimes stop for coffee because there are multiple coffee shops near Coleman Boulevard where I lived.

Getting the boat ready. I’ll get the boat on the water and then meet up with people. For the most part, people are usually never on time. It’s always waiting for somebody. Whatever time you usually plan on starting, it’s always another hour added to it. And it’s never the same number of people that it started with. It’s always more.

Afternoon beach trip. We usually go to the beach somewhere, as there are a few places to stop in the immediate area, like Drum Island or No Name Island [Fort Sumter]. Mainly on Drum Island. We usually just hang out there. For the most part,

Riccio and his son Sam show a fish they caught

everyone just hangs out in the boat or gets into the water till they’re hungry.

Lunch on the water. Usually, on the way back, wherever it’s convenient to stop. Probably go to Crab House or California Dreaming. Those two are good spots to go to on the water as they have convenient access to the docks.

Going back slowly. It’s a slow ride getting back, as the rest of the day is just relaxing. It’s usually a ride back to Shem Creek over there and coming to Red’s [Ice House]. Everybody slowly goes back home or comes over.

Dinner at home. We usually have dinner at home, especially on the weekends. Either order food or bring food home. Just make it nice and easy, as we’re not having to make

dinner that night. We usually make dinner the rest of the week.

Movies with the family. After dinner, we might watch something like a TV show, movie, or if a game is on, I’ll watch that. When it’s my family [with me], it’s usually my son’s choice. Lots of Disney for sure. But also movies that he wants to watch, but he can’t watch. Fast and Furious, though, he loves that. Those movies are some of his favorites.

Nighttime. I am usually in bed by 9 p.m. I let the dog out again for the second time. She gets most of the attention when I am at home. She misses it all day long, so she deserves it. In bed, I usually get on social media for five to 10 minutes until the blue light experience gets my eyes tired.

Dump questionable protest ordinance

The fact that the city of Charleston has an ordinance titled “First Amendment Demonstrations” recognizes that citizens have a right to peaceably assemble, as outlined in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

But that’s about all the ordinance has in common with the Constitution. Rather, it is a method to control the rights of Charlestonians to assemble by using a specially-crafted permitting system that we believe is unconstitutional.

The ordinance came into being when a lemming-like city council bought into fears by local businesses of longterm “rioting” after the 2020 murder of George Floyd in Minnesota. His death did, in fact, cause riots in other parts of the country.

But Charleston’s reaction was comparatively tame — no deaths, three fires, broken windows and some looting. Perhaps the biggest reason that night got out of hand was police seemed to be caught off guard. But by the next night, they clamped down — and the chorus of people calling for big action on “the riot” got started, leading to the draconian ordinance that now requires a permit for any gathering of 25 or more people.

After watching the recent No Kings protest in Hampton Park — a permitted event where people effectively exercised their constitutional rights and police respectfully monitored the event to protect protesters and the anti-protesters who didn’t really materialize — we believe it is time for city council to revise the 2021 protest

regulation. Failing that, citizen groups should challenge it as unconstitutional in federal courts.

Why? Because the regulation is overzealous, a 21st century overreaction that has echoes of Charleston’s 19th century overreaction in the so-called 1822 slave revolt that led to hangings of Black freedman Denmark Vesey and 34 slaves.

According to the city’s 2021 regulation, a First Amendment demonstration is “any demonstration, assembly, picketing, speechmaking, marching, protesting, vigil or religious service, and all other like forms of conduct, in or upon any street, including the sidewalk area thereof, park or other public place in the city, that involve the communication or expression of views or grievances, engaged in by one or more persons, the conduct of which is reasonably likely to draw a crowd or onlookers.”

Yep, that’s overly broad and restrictive. And while the ordinance does include an exception for “spontaneous gatherings” caused by “breaking news or affairs,” the language is open to interpretation by authorities and can easily be swatted away to keep people from protesting.

South Carolinians have a long tradition of not liking being told what to do, stemming all the way back to Christoper Gadsden’s pre-Revolutionary “Don’t Tread On Me” flag. It’s time for this restrictive ordinance to go and for common sense to prevail.

We need to be able to peacefully protest in collaboration with police keeping safe environments — without having to do so within the confines of rules that could be from a police state.

CHARLESTON CHECKLIST

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities:

1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infrastructure and make smart climate change decisions about development, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

On turning off the incessant hum of politics

Perhaps the most delightful thing about vacationing in France this year was something beyond the great food, spectacular culture, lush vistas and kind people.

The best thing about this year’s time away from the United States was not having to hear about Donald Trump and politics every time you turn a corner. Maybe it’s not until one gets away for a bit that you realize how inundated and exhausted we are by politics through social media, television, radio, newspapers and all of the messaging that slams into our brains daily. Being able to mostly turn that off for a few days has been a vacation in and of itself.

Sure, we heard about the sudden bombing of Iran, the New York mayor’s race and the not unexpected announcement by S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson that he is running for governor.

But what’s been joyously missing is the rat-a-tat-tat of people dissecting every little aspect of what Trump and his administration are doing — even though they often just seem to make up stuff as they go along to respond to whatever is in the daily news cycle.

… turn off social media and television for a few days to get away from the incessant hum and chatter of politics.

So maybe the best vacation advice of the year — either inside the U.S. or out — is to turn off social media and television for a few days to get away from the incessant hum and chatter of politics. It will be good for your soul.

In France, my younger daughter and I had a good time visiting Paris, Bordeaux and several small villages along the Dordogne River. Here are some observations:

Air-conditioning. We visited during an unexpected heat wave in a part of the world that doesn’t do air-conditioning well. In one hotel, the lowest setting for the A/C was 76 degrees– and it was still humid. In an apartment we rented briefly, the 18-inch-thick walls did a great job of keeping out the heat, but it was still warm inside. To get cooler, we bought a $30 fan.

Food. Once you eat bread baked by the French, you won’t want the schlock that most Americans eat. It’s fresh, clean-tasting, hearty and inexpensive — as are wine, cheese and more. While you can still get junk in larger grocery stores, it’s interesting to look at how there are far fewer ingredients listed on packaging. Everything seems less processed.

Coffee. It’s just better. Anywhere you go in France — except maybe train stations — has better coffee than you generally get in the U.S. The portion sizes, however, are tiny.

Markets. Villages thrive on weekly markets where you can get everything from canned duck and the sweetest strawberries to olives, nuts, cheese, fish, meat, clothing, jewelry and all kinds of knick-knacks. We didn’t see a lot of Chinese-made junk.

Transportation. The high-speed trains between big cities are way cool. It took 2.3 hours to go 350 miles from Paris to Bordeaux, for example. Ubers are affordable. Trams are easy. But driving in a rented car on narrow French country roads can be exhausting.

Smoking. About the only disappointing part of some local restaurants were smokers at outside tables. While smoking doesn’t appear as ubiquitous here as it once was, it’s noticeable and makes one think about how much more pleasant restaurants are in the U.S. since smoking has been banned.

Guns. The culture isn’t permissive or obsessive on guns. People weren’t walking around with them. Gun shops were rare — most likely because of how hard it is to get hunting rifles here. About the only guns we saw were among trios of police officers in high-traffic tourist areas.

County parks offer picturesque views, unique activities

It’s not hard for Charleston area residents to fish, swim, and enjoy the outdoors anytime at the county’s more than two dozen public parks, water parks, boat landings and other small public properties.

And for those sweltering days when it’s just too hot, many of the parks offer shady refuges and splash pads that are perfect for the whole family.

“They’re all very different and all have their own personalities,” said Sarah Reynolds, public information coordinator for the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC).

Ranging from expansive public grounds and green space to tucked-away nature trails to historic preservation sites, Charleston County’s many parks offer something for everybody. The Charleston City Paper is celebrating the hot summer months by spotlighting unique park offerings, as well as sharing a list of all of the county’s parks so you can hit them all before school reopens in August.

Top spots

James Island County Park is one of the largest parks under the PRC’s umbrella, complete with the Splash Zone Waterpark, the Challenge Course, a climbing wall and campgrounds. The park is perfect for families looking to enjoy the open greenspace,

saltwater fishing and crabbing and miles of paved trails for walking, biking and skating. It is even home to an expansive dog park and an 18-hole disc golf course.

Even if you’ve never been during the summer, Reynolds said, most people would recognize the parkgrounds for the annual Festival of Lights at the end of every year.

In North Charleston, Wannamaker Park is another one of the most popular destinations among the PRC’s parks. The park boasts seven acres of grassy open meadow, the Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark, picnic sites, two miles of paved trails and 2.5 miles of nature trails. The park is a nature-lovers dream, offering bike and kayak rentals to boot.

Across the Cooper River, Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant features a 50-foot observation tower overlooking the natural landscape. The park is also home to a tidal creek fishing dock, a floating dock, paved and nature trails and more. The Splash Island Waterpark offers families the chance to cool down in the hot summer sun.

Hidden gems

McLeod Plantation Historic Site on James Island memorializes the original plantation, established in 1851. The 37-acre Gullah/ Geechee heritage site includes a riverside outdoor pavilion, a sweeping oak alley and the McLeod Oak, thought to be more than

600 years old. Guests can tour the historic homes of the McLeod family and those built for enslaved families that served it.

Reynolds said that while McLeod Plantation Historic Site has garnered national attention for its historic preservation efforts, many locals have yet to discover it.

Located on the west end of Kiawah Island, Kiawah Beachwalker Park offers ocean frontage and river view, along with the only public beach access on the island. The park is operated through a cooperative agreement among Kiawah Development Partners, Charleston County Council and the Charleston County PRC.

SK8 Charleston is a facility unlike any other managed by the county PRC — a concrete skate park spanning more than 32,000 square feet and designed by Team Pain Skate Parks. The 200-foot long snake run funnels down into a 9-foot deep pocket. The skate park also features a pro bowl

with an 11.5-foot deep end and an intermediate bowl with a 7-foot deep end. Skating veterans can drop in, and newbies can take skateboarding lessons.

Tucked away at the foot of the Limehouse Bridge between James Island and West Ashley, Stono River County Park offers beautiful Lowcountry river views from 1.5 miles of wooded trails and marsh boardwalks for walkers, runners and cyclists. The 85.5-acre site includes 25 acres of highland, 12 acres of marsh island and 48 acres of marsh adjoining the Stono River. Reynolds said Lowcountry travelers often drive right past it, not even realizing they could be missing out on some of the most beautiful views just a short drive from home.

Conservation efforts

Ravenel’s Caw Caw Interpretive Center, often the destination for nature hikes and educational programs from pre-school to university levels, was once part of several rice plantations and is now managed as a low-impact wildlife preserve.

“It’s pretty far out, but it’s such a beautiful site,” Reynolds said. “You don’t feel like you’re in Charleston anymore.”

The park features more than six miles of trails with trail-side exhibits, elevated boardwalks through natural wetlands, thousands of naturalized tea plants and more. The landscape is the favored habitat for managed waterfowl, songbirds, otters, deer, alligators, bald eagles and more.

On the other end of the scale lies Laurel Hill County Park. The land is privately

Expert tips on becoming a great grillmaster

The tantalising smells and sizzles of food on the grill is a soundtrack to a memorable Lowcountry summer. With the holiday weekend upon us, three of Charleston’s most talented chefs share their advice on the best ways to grill meat, seafood and vegetables.

Make the most of Lowcountry seafood

Alex Eaton, executive chef at modern Spanish restaurant and bar Estadio, blends flavors from the American South and the Iberian peninsula. While her menu beautifully presents vegetables like Brussels sprouts with anchovy butter and crispy leeks as well as meat dishes like Iberico ham wrapped truffled Spanish tortilla, seafood shines on her menus.

When grilling seafood, Eaton tries to keep it simple.

“I avoid sugary sauces since they burn easily over direct flame,” she said. “Let the seafood shine, especially when it’s fresh and local. I still like to play with herbs and spices, just with a little restraint.”

She said she likes to soak applewood chips and add them to charcoal for an extra smoky flavor. She also uses high heat. With fish, she recommends starting skin side down and putting a grill lid over the seafood to achieve a crispy skin and to cook things through like they are in an oven.

What is Eaton’s favorite seafood to grill during a Lowcountry summer?

“I love grilling fish collars because they get super crispy and flavorful, and shrimp with a big spoonful of chimichurri on top.”

Eaton noted her favorite pairing for seafood is zucchini, squash and onions since they can stand up to the high heat from the grill.

Eaton recommends seafood grillmasters buy as fresh as possible at individual local markets, not grocery stores.

Vegetables as the star

There are few people who know how to prepare vegetables like Kevin Johnson, chef and owner of downtown’s The Grocery and Mount Pleasant’s Lola Rose. From The Grocery’s mainstay wood-roasted peaches with tasso ham, shishito pepper and goat cheese to Lola Rose’s field pea hummus with feta, vegetables are the star of the show on Johnson’s menus.

When preparing vegetables, he does not marinate them before putting them on the grill.

“I like to season them with salt, pepper and a generous drizzle of olive oil,” he said. “After they come off the grill, I’ll dress them with a flavorful vinaigrette, always with lots of fresh herbs and something acidic like lemon juice or champagne vinegar to brighten them up.”

Johnson noted that his favorite vegetables to grill in the summer are okra and summer squash. He recommends skewing okra on long sticks to make them easier to turn and for the squash, he halves and chars them, then lets them cool before thinly slicing to get a taste of both char and crisp in every bite.

To prepare the grill, he recommends using hardwood charcoal, and his preference is to cook vegetables over high heat for a shorter amount of time to get a quick char and crunch.

“I like to pair vegetables with even more vegetables,” he said when asked for his recommendation for a grilled vegetable accompaniment. “A mix of raw and grilled is great. For example, a grilled squash salad with some shaved raw squash is delicious. And you absolutely have to have some fresh sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt, pepper, olive oil and a handful of herbs. For something more substantial, I’ll add a grain salad packed with even more vegetables.”

Grill good cuts of meat

Wagener Terrace favorite Herd Provisions is a restaurant, market and whole animal butcher shop. Executive chef Jeanne Oleksiak reimagines classic French, Asian, Italian and Latin dishes, and much of the beef on the menu is sourced from Leaping Waters Farm in Virginia, owned by Herd Provisions’ owner Alec Bradford. The Herd Provisions menu offers everything from lamb tartare with cilantro salsa verde and mole to a pork chop with cheddar and caramelized onion butter. But when it comes to the grill, Oleksiak is partial to a steak.

“Beef is always my first pick,” she said. “There’s just something about a perfectly grilled steak. I also love pork — chops, tenderloin, and ribs are all great on the grill. And chicken is super versatile, whether it’s whole or broken down into parts.”

Herd Provisions sells retail cuts of meat that are sustainably raised, grass-fed and grass-finished, and has a team ready to help shoppers find the perfect cut. Oleksiak does note that “some grocery stores carry solid options too. Look for sustainable and grassfed labels when you can.”

Oleksiak’s approach to prepping meat for the grill depends on the protein and the cut. “I like to brine chops to keep them juicy, and with chicken, I’ll either brine or marinate depending on the flavor I’m going for,” she said. “Garlic is always part of the equation, and I love using rosemary and oregano. When it comes to finishing, I usually go for a simple butter infused with herbs.”

Oleksiak uses wood or hardwood charcoal, and grill temperature and cooking time also depend on the protein and cut.

“For pork chops, tenderloin or steak, I go hot and fast to get a good sear,” she shared. “But if I’m doing ribs or pork butts, it’s low and slow to build flavor and tenderness.”

Every great piece of grilled meat deserves a stellar side and Oleksiak favors those that are seasonal and balanced. Her favorites are “local veggies, potatoes, something bright and acidic like a salad. And, if I want to make it extra comforting, mac and cheese always hits the spot.”

REVIEW

New IAAM exhibition spans time, place with Blackness

On a decades-old recording, James Brown says it loud. In a 1928 lithograph, Aaron Douglas channels the “Charleston.” On the back of a 1990s denim jacket, an image of Angela Davis is joined by the painted words, “Power to the People.”

These are but three of the artifacts that come together in a new special exhibition at the International African American Museum (IAAM) demonstrating with dynamism and invention how each is connected in its expression of Blackness.

That exhibition is re/Defined: Creative Expressions of Blackness from the Diaspora, which is up through January 2026. Its co-curators, Isabelle Britto and Suzanne DiBella, gathered a host of culturally powerful artifacts and works of art to explore Blackness through its divergently expressive, yet deeply connective threads.

With its forced beginnings, Blackness in America has traveled time and place, from the transatlantic slave trade to the Great Migration and well beyond. This considered, compelling new exhibition sheds light on this diasporic convergence of cultures.

It is one that has been frequently powered by creatives in galvanizing brush strokes, stirring strains of music rich in centuries-old rhythms and narrative realms harking back as far, too. In such vivid, absorbing detail, the exhibition explores its identity–one shaped by resistance–by examining its history, culture and contemporary art.

Pulling largely from the museum’s own impressive collection, re/Defined spans place and place. The viewer’s frame is not linear. It is instead layered by intricately rendered canvases, by instruments both carved on and plugged-in, by gorgeous, sculptural headpieces and by time-yellowed, iconic paperback books.

Rather than a chronological foray into Black identity, the exhibition finds its organizing principle in different modes of

The International African American Museum’s re/Defined exhibition explores what it means to be Black through historic artifacts and art

expression: visual arts, adornment, music and storytelling.

Throughout this eclectic aggregation, an overarching theme emerges with South Carolina as a key player. From gilt painting to patterned tunic, from dialect-driven Gullah yarn to autographed electric guitar, the collective effusion of cultural expression reveals a common and abiding impulse: to hold fast to inherited roots and to resist assimilation.

Visual art spanning time and place infuses the show. “Charleston,” a 1928 lithograph by Harlem Renaissance figure Aaron Douglas, evokes the song whose origins are here in our city, which was a global hit. Douglas portrays a jazz club of silhouetted singing, strumming, swinging Black musicians and denizens.

Time travel to “Cecilia,” a 2025 mixed media collage from artist Stan Squirewell, who paints and papers over photography of often anonymous Black women from yesteryear, breathing new life into each subject. A 1970 lithograph by renowned artist Elizabeth Catlett, “The Torture of Mothers,” flags the constant fear Black mothers have for their children with the threat of racial violence. Nearby, a “Black Is Beautiful” poster by photographer Kwame Brathwaite, who popularized the phrase in the 1960s, beams from the exhibition wall.

In the section Adornment, one vitrine showcases elaborate carved hair accessories alongside a still-packaged circa 1970s Afro Comb, both fashioned for natural hair. A

West African mudcloth jacket finds a fitting exhibition companion in a contemporary jacket and madras headpieces.

The Music portion of the exhibition harmonizes a host of instruments with a marching band uniform worn by prominent South Carolina band leader George Kennedy; a 1935 Rio de Janeiro Carnival poster; a host of vinyls and covers, with a digital screen offering details on game-changing works like South Carolinian James Brown’s “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud.”

Similarly, storytelling spans Uncle Remus, African folklore and Jamaica Kincaid, demonstrating the wide range of settings that Blackness encompasses, as well as the overarching impulse to own the narrative.

The aim, the museum, is for those who encounter it to consider how history and creativity intersect. With this thoughtful means to foster exchange, they most surely will, one fascinating artefact after the next.

IF YOU WANT TO GO: The exhibition is open through Jan. 4, 2026, and is part of the regular admission at the IAAM, 14 Wharfside St., Charleston.

Power trio Restless Spirit rides metal momentum into Tin Roof

If there is such a thing as “crisp brutality,” New York’s Restless Spirit fits that band description. It is a power trio with an emphasis in “power,” and the band is bringing that muscle to the Tin Roof in West Ashley on July 10.

If the new live album, The Doomed & The Dead…Live, is any indication, the Tin Roof show should be the kind of all-out blistering assault on the senses that metal fans love. And Restless Spirit is most definitely metal. Since forming in 2016, Restless Spirit has found a second home in the Southeast. Like most of its tours, the one that brings the band to Tin Roof features dates in Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida and the Carolinas.

“I don’t know what it is,” Restless Spirit singer/guitarist Paul Aloisio said in a recent interview with the Charleston City Paper. “Maybe it’s because we’ve played the Southeast so much, but sometimes I feel like we’re local to the North Carolina/South Carolina area. It feels like a stone’s throw from New York.”

The band’s new live album was recorded last year at the metal-heavy RPM Fest, and the band rages from the start. Aloisio asks the audience if they’re having a good time and then kicks off the set by roaring, “THAT ENDS NOW!”

What follows is a slice of swaggering hard rock that sounds like The Cult and Black Sabbath meeting up for a couple of beers (“Judgment & Exile”), two raging thrash tunes (“All Furies” and “Cascade Immolator”), a progressive metal epic (“Lords Of The New Depression”) and a concluding slow-crawling stoner metal behemoth called “From The Dust Returned.”

It’s all metal, but the band dives into various subgenres with gusto. It’s a trait that Alosio said has been there since the band got started.

“It’s not that I want the song to specifically sound a certain way,” he says. “But when I get in a room with our drummer, we ask our-

selves what we’re feeling today. I don’t know how other bands do it, but it’s not like we say, ‘We want to be a doom metal band’ or, ‘We want to be a sludge metal band.’ Whatever comes out is going to come out.”

Bassist Marc Morello and drummer Jon Gusman round out the Restless Spirit lineup. Aloisio said that the trio format is the perfect outlet for its music.

“Selfishly, as a guitar player, it gives me more room to mess around,” he said. “It makes it easier to flow in a more organic and experimental way. I have the luxury of doing whatever I want as long as it serves the song.”

Whatever the approach is, it’s working. Restless Spirit’s last studio album, 2023’s Afterimage, has been streamed more than 1 million times.

“Obviously, to make the purest music, you have to make it for yourself,” Aloisio said. “But you also want people to connect with it, and we’re very lucky in that regard.”

The band has been surprisingly prolific over the last decade, releasing three albums, four EPs and various singles.

“We can’t help it,” Aloisio said of the band’s busy release schedule. “We love playing together and we love writing songs. Back in the ’70s and ’80s, bands were putting out albums every year or every two years. There are a lot of bands that I love now that will go years between records. I always want more. So I like to give our listeners more.”

With the live album on wax, Aloisio said Restless Spirit feels as though it has cleared the decks for a future sound, even if it was unintentional.

“We just started writing our fourth full length album,” he said, “and it’s markedly different from the most recent release. There was a lot of darkness in those first three records, and I feel like I’ve gotten that purged out. Now I want to have more fun. But it wasn’t intentional. Life and circumstances change.”

TERMS OF SALE: The sale shall be for cash, and the highest bidder shall be required to make a cash deposit of five (5%) percent of the bid as earnest money and as evidence of good faith, provided, however, the Plaintiff shall be entitled to apply the debt or any portion of the debt due them against their respective bids in lieu of cash. Should the person making the highest bid at the sale fail to comply with the terms of its bid by depositing the said five (5%) percent cash, then the property shall be sold at the risk of such bidder on the same sales date or some subsequent date as the Master in Equity may find convenient and advantageous. Should the last and highest bidder fail to comply with the terms of its bid within thirty (30) days of the final acceptance of this bid, then the Master in Equity shall readvertise and resell the property on the same terms on a subsequent date at the risk of such bidder.

Should the Plaintiff, or its representative, fail to be present at the time of sale, the property is automatically withdrawn from said sale and sold at the next available sales day upon the terms and

conditions as set forth in the Order and Judgment of Foreclosure and Sale or any Supplemental Order.

As a personal or deficiency judgment is not applicable to this action, bidding will conclude at the fall of the gavel on the date of the sale.

NOTICE: The foreclosure deed is not a warranty deed. Interested bidders should satisfy themselves as to the quality of title to be conveyed by obtaining an independent title search well before the foreclosure sale date.

The successful bidder will be required to pay interest on the amount of the bid from the date of sale to date of compliance with the bid at the statutory rate for judgments.
