So your child has a concussion. Now what? A concussion causes serious brain damage. Even if it doesn’t feel like you hit your head very hard, there is almost certainly an area of the brain that has been bruised, losing blood flow and therefore oxygen, without which it cannot heal. There is a growing consensus among concussion researchers that the only effective way to proactively treat a concussion is with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), which has been proven to rebuild damaged tissue as well as stimulate actual brain cell regeneration. HBOT is the administration of higher concentrations of oxygen under higher atmospheric pressure to force oxygen to dissolve directly into tissue, even without blood flow. This extra oxygen allows tissues to heal that otherwise would have remained damaged, like the brain after a concussion. Treatments last about an hour and a typical concussion protocol will call for 2 to 20 hours of treatment depending on the time between injury and treatment initiation. Paid advertisement

“...food choices we make today impact our immediate selves and our future selves.
The Five W's of Heart Healthy Eating
LOVE YOUR HEART
WHO WHAT WHY WHEN WHERE
byMonica BY MONICA KANE, RD, LMT, NCTMB
thebalancedbeing@hotmail.com
What we eat directly affects how we perform. Food is fuel for our body and mind. The nutrients provided by our food choices play a role in how we feel and function. The food choices we make today impact our immediate selves and our future selves. In an effort to understand the importance of heart healthy eating during the teen years, we must first take a look at the WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHEN, AND WHERE of heart health. Who: According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women, affecting people of all ethnicities in the United States. The typical American diet and sedentary lifestyle practically bullet point the factors that increase risk of heart disease. Poor food choices, stress, and decreased physical activity play a major role in setting the stage for heart related complications. With unending high fat food choices, hectic schedules, social demands, and little time and energy left at the end of the day for exercise, the “WHO” of this equation becomes clear. As a nation, we are ALL at risk for heart disease. What: The function of the heart is to pump oxygen rich blood throughout our bodies. The oxygen rich blood provides nutrients to our cells that are vital for function and healing. Heart disease is a form of cardiovascular disease caused by narrow-

ing or full blockage of blood vessels of the heart. This blockage is due to a build-up of fat deposits and cholesterol (also known as “plaque”) in the major heart vessels. When blood vessels are blocked, the critical oxygen rich blood cannot get to the heart and to the other vital systems that our bodies need to function. Fatty deposits and cholesterol build up in the coronary arteries are increased by high levels of dietary fat and cholesterol in our daily food choices. The build up that can lead to heart disease does not happen overnight. Why: Why does the food you choose affect your risk of heart disease? The National Institute of Health details several risk factors for heart disease. The majority of those risk factors are linked to unhealthy eating. High blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, and obesity are diet related risk factors that can directly be managed with healthy eating choices. Fried foods, baked goods, high fat dairy products, sauces/dressings, packaged foods, and processed foods all tend to boast high amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol. While fat is important to our overall health, the goal of healthy eating is to incorporate heart healthy fats found in fish, plant based oils, nuts, and seeds while limiting the unhealthy saturated fats and cholesterol. Over eating foods that are high in fat and calories directly contributes to weight gain and obesity. Choosing foods that are packaged and processed increases total sodium intake, negatively affects blood pressure and increases risk of cardiovascular insult such as heart attack and stroke. Fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans provide heart healthy fibers with minimal fat, cholesterol, and sodium. When: Is it really necessary to worry about the cardiovascular health as a teenager when things like homework and friends clearly take precedence over something so far off as heart disease? The answer is based in science AND psychology. Prolonged unhealthy eating choices can negatively affect 106
cholesterol levels as early as the teen age years. Heart disease characterized by blockage of coronary arteries develops over decades, even though the symptoms of the disease typically do not arise until later in life. Continued dietary choices that negatively affect our heart health can have a tumbleweed effect and result in lifelong habits that will be monumentally more challenging to change as we get more and more rooted in them. Where: Healthy eating is easier said than done. In the comfort of our own homes, we have 100% control over our food choices. Making good food choices starts at the grocery store, where we have complete say over choosing heart healthy foods over high fat, processed, unhealthy options. If you don’t buy unhealthy foods, they aren’t hanging around in your kitchen waiting to be eaten. Make your home a haven of healthy eating, where your refrigerator is stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and hearty whole grains. However, don’t stop there. Take healthy eating WHEREVER you go. If your plans take you to a fast food restaurant, choose grilled versus fried, omit the use of high fat condiments such as mayonnaise and salad dressings, opt for small versus super size when it comes to sugar laden drinks and high fat fried sides like rings and fries. The same goes for dining out in sit down restaurants. Treat yourself to great flavors but also look for opportunities to lighten the load on excessive calories, fats, sodium and cholesterol by ordering sauces and dressings on the side, choosing lean proteins and entrees over high fat dishes, and ordering seltzers or unsweetened drinks in place of sodas. Heart healthy eating isn’t always easy when you are on the go, but it is always achievable! Take healthy eating habits with you WHEREVER you go. With a better understanding of the 5 W’s of heart health and heart healthy food options, the decision to love your heart is easy. Make small, realistic investments in your heart healthy eating habits each and every day. Love your heart today and it will love you back for years to come!
