FAMILY COMMUNION GUIDE

COMMUNION DEVOTIONAL

At Chapelhill Kids, we believe every child can have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, and we encourage our kids to make the decision to follow Him!

Our desire is for our kids to not just hear about Jesus on a Sunday or Wednesday but to learn about Jesus by walking with Him daily. We encourage our kids to follow the commandments of Jesus as believers, and one of those is through the taking of communion. We want to ensure kids understand the significance of communion and advise you to help determine that at home. As you discern if your child is ready to partake in communion, here are some questions to ask your child.

Why do we take communion?

We partake to remember what Jesus did on the cross. To celebrate God’s undeserved, unconditional and unending love.

What does the bread symbolize? What about the juice? Do we really drink Jesus’ blood or eat his body when we take communion?

The bread symbolizes Jesus’ body broken for us. The juice symbolizes His blood that He shed for us.

The bread and the juice are just symbols of his body and blood. A symbol is an object that has a hidden deeper meaning.

Why do you want to take communion?

We take communion to remember the sacrifice that Jesus gave for us and as a command from God. I want to be obedient and follow His commandments. If you do not feel your child is ready, let them watch other family members participate in communion and tell them that you will reevaluate when you feel ready.

Leading Communion at Home:

The Bible talks about the importance of making sure we take communion with a clean heart and in a worthy manner. Before taking communion, take time as a family to pause and make sure you aren’t holding any unforgiveness against anyone. 1 Corinthians 11:26-29.

Read the following passages on Jesus’ death.

- John 3:16

- John 19: 16-18

- John 19:28-30

Spend some time talking as a family, reflecting on what Jesus did for us. Ask your child how it makes them feel that Jesus would do that for them.

Read the following passage and partake in communion together.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NLT

“23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.’ 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.” (NLT)

PRAY TOGETHER AS A FAMILY, THANKING GOD FOR WHAT HE DID FOR US.
