REBECCA ENTEL A UTHOR I N RESI DENCE
FRI DA Y EV ENI NG JUNE 8 - 7PM On Friday night, June 8th, we will have the pleasure of hosting Cornell College professor and author Rebecca Entel, who will speak about trips she took to Holocaust sites in Eastern Europe and ruins of slave plantations in the Caribbean. While doing research for her novel, Fingerprints of Previous Owners, she was struck by the lack of preservation of historic sites by descendants of the enslaved. During the same years, she traveled to Lithuania and Poland: the only member of her family to do so since her grandparents emigrated in 1947. Her talk will discuss the questions these experiences raise about memory and preservation. Rebecca Entel is an associate professor of English and Creative Writing at Cornell College, where she teaches courses in creative writing, multicultural American literature, Caribbean literature, and the literature of social justice. Her short stories and essays have appeared in such journals as Tiferet, Guernica, Joyland, Literary Hub, and Electric Literature. Her first novel, Fingerprints of Previous Owners, was published in 2017. She is the sister of CBE member Gabrielle Hattingh. We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

"Tzed akah (g iving ) out weig hs all ot her As the Bridge to our Future pledge committee members meet with congregant families, we are all struck by the variety of stories regarding specific Jewish moments in our lives. It is easy to recall the simchas? dancing the horah at a cousin?s wedding or as a child, lighting the Chanukah Menorah candles in anticipation of receiving a gift and eating latkes.
Other accounts reveal deeper layers and memories rarely shared in casual conversations. We?ve heard about being the only Jewish family in small towns, having to travel over an hour to attend religious school and worship services. Another member spoke about never being able to have school friends visit the family?s home. The grandmother of the family feared non-Jewish people as a result of her own traumatic experiences.
Fortunately, in our municipality, being Jewish is part of who we are, not a stigma of who we are not. Congregation Beth El gives all of us a Jewish center to gather for worship, to learn, to share, and to celebrate. In the past month alone, we?ve joined together to · Enjoy an art class led by a congregant · Celebrate the naming of a grandson · Sing-along and dance to music from the Fifties and Sixties · Integrate Shabbat worship with Star Wars themes and costumed characters · Commend the Confirmation of seven high school students at Shavuot
During the upcoming summer months, committee members will be contacting you to join in the Pledge Campaign, Bridge to our Future, to ensure strong financial resources for Congregation Beth El. We are On e Bet h El.
L?shalom, Carol Cooper
