St Luke’s & Queen Street Church Congregational News

Our beautiful countryside – a view over Scone from Macduff’s Folly

March 2020

Dear friends “St Luke’s is closing!” “No, it’s not!” “It is, when Graham retires.” “No, it’s not!” Well, I am pleased to tell you St Luke’s is NOT closing, not for some time anyway. At last, I can give you some idea of the future of St Luke’s. For Dundee Presbytery has now agreed that eventually there should be one combined congregation serving the Broughty community. Needless to say, this will not come about overnight or without much discussion locally. Therefore, for the foreseeable future, St Luke’s will be remaining ‘open for business’. It is also worth pointing out that our membership will be part of the team choosing the next minister to take up the challenges and rewards of this gradually widening parish. Nevertheless, to allow this process to get underway, we need to have a more secure financial base. To that end, I would ask you to respond generously at our forthcoming Gift Day and also to review your weekly givings. The future for the Church of Scotland in Broughty Ferry is undoubtedly exciting but only if it is suitably resourced. So please contribute to Christ’s work for our future. Thanks in anticipation With every blessing

Guild Mary Ralston and the New Kirk Singers entertained us on 6th February. The theme for their programme was “sun, moon and stars”. Many of the songs were old favourites and we were able to sing along. On 20th February Mike Groves gave a talk on Our Wonderful Angus Glens. He works in partnership with the Angus Glens Moorland Group. His talk was illustrated with a wonderful slide show and he described the management of the moorland, flora and wildlife. Tickets, priced £5, are now available from Guild members for our fund raiser on 19th March. Refreshments are included. From the Treasurer Over the past few years the total funds in the General Account of the Church, excluding any value attributable to the manse, have been steadily declining. To illustrate this, five years ago at the end of 2014 our funds stood at £89,623. Today this total will have dropped to around £33,000. It is almost certain that this amount will prove insufficient to allow us to meet our financial commitments in full beyond the end of the current year. Preliminary forecast for this year suggests that our total spending requirements will be around £79,500 while our total income will be somewhere in the region of £62,000. This merely highlights a trend where expenditure tends to rise unaccompanied by a commensurate increase in income. Again going back to 2014, our total receipts then were £97,287 against expenditure of £110,957 which included £20,749 spent on Fabric. Against this, offerings – excluding tax recovered, were £56,699. Last year our offerings, including donations to our Gift Day, and again excluding tax recovered, amounted to £38,200, clearly a substantial drop. Our expenditure last year was £85,548 with £4,981 spent on fabric The principal items remain as always, Yearly payments: Ministry Salaries Church Officer/Cleaner Organist Heat & Light Church Insurance Total

Over and above this we have repairs/maintenance and administration (printing, stationery, copyright) costs. We must therefore take some action and the decision has been taken to hold another Gift Day Appeal to commence at the April Communion (Sunday 26 April 2020) and we ask for your generous support Many areas of our Church are run by committed volunteers and I wish at this time to thank all those members who freely give their time and energies to support the work of the Church. We really couldn’t manage without you. With thanks Mary Rice, Treasurer St Luke’s & Queen Street Church

Belated Birthday Wishes Margaret Philip was a member of St Luke's and Queen Street Church, Broughty Ferry from 1961 until 2013. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing and cake decorating. She joined the Naturalists Society with her husband Robert and enjoyed excursions to study wild flowers and birds. Margaret’s favourite holidays have been in Scotland, especially on the Scottish islands. About 6 years ago Margaret decided it was time for a change. Her daughter, Jean Soper, was moving to Sutton Coldfield with her husband and Margaret decided to move there too, attracted by proximity to family and by the excellent facilities available in Poppy Court flats, where she celebrated her 100th birthday on 17th February. Family members who attended the party include Margaret’s 4 grandsons and her 5 great grandchildren, aged between 1 and 10 years old. Sutton Coldfield Mayor and Lady Mayoress also attended the party. Entertainment was provided by the U3A Singing Group who sang well known songs from yesteryear and invited everyone to join in. Asked about the secret of living to 100 Margaret said: “Keep active, go swimming if you can, and don’t worry. It’s great to live in a friendly community where everyone supports one another. And finally, enjoy chocolate!”
