St Luke’s & Queen Street Church Congregational News

October 2019

Dear friends Well, with the ‘Last Night of the Proms’ over, we have definitely entered autumn. Whilst this is a season of great beauty, it is also a time of change. We together in St Luke’s are also in a season of change. So, I am writing to you to bring you up to date. Some time ago I was asked by our Presbytery to remain in ‘harness’ a tad longer to allow for reflection amongst the congregations in the Ferry as to the future. With a number of technical matters now more or less settled, I can let you know that I will most probably be retiring on 31 July of next year. However, I would hope that together we will continue to explore new forms of worship in particular with regards our Welcome Services and music. Similarly, there will be no better time to go on bolstering our ‘family’ spirit while addressing our financial deficit. Put bluntly, let these months ahead be a time to crystallise opportunities rather than one of endings. I was surprised the other day to see some of the recently planted seeds starting to sprout in fields. Let us then this autumn have faith that while chapters do come to an end, in Christ another one always opens to bring a fresh harvest to his glory. With every blessing

Car Pool The Car Pool is available every Sunday for your convenience. The drivers are willing to come and pick you up from your home to bring you to the service then take you home again afterwards. Please make us of this service by phoning the named driver for the appropriate Sunday. You can phone the day before or up until 10 am on the day. Please, please, if you are a car driver would you consider joining our car pool? We have so many members who require lifts to church that the drivers are having to do two runs. If you could help about once a month it would be very useful. Contact me if you can help. Marvin Harris 778089.

Harvest Thanksgiving Thanks to all who contributed to our Harvest festival. The dried and tinned foods were sent to the Lily Walker Centre for the homeless and the fruit and vegetables went to the Eagles Trust who run soup kitchens. They were much appreciated by both. Thanks also to those who prepared the sanctuary and to those who delivered the gifts. St Luke’s & Queen Street Church

Christmas Craft Fair The Christmas craft fair will be held in the halls at St Luke’s & Queen Street church on Saturday 23 November between 2 pm and 4 pm. There will be a wide variety of stalls and tickets are £3 including refreshments. The Social Committee are looking for donations for the chocolate tombola and raffle. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

Thank You I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone at St Luke’s for their friendship and fellowship since our return to the Ferry in April 2007. Many of the people who remembered Douglas and myself from our previous time in St Luke’s from 1971 to 1989 were still in the church when we returned in 2007 and made it so easy for us to slot back into life here. We will miss you all – no more meringues from the cake & candy, no more lovely gifts knitted by Mary Stewart, Guild afternoons, Craft Group gossip, stories from the pulpit. Life moves on and we go with it. We are moving to Prestwick to be nearer to our daughter and to help look after our grandson. A warm welcome will be extended to anyone who wants a day out on the west coast or even just a shopping trip to Glasgow. Please do keep in touch. Regards, Joan Chalmers

Carpet Bowling Club at St Luke’s The carpet bowling is just about to start again in our church hall on Tuesday, 8th October at 1.45 pm. They are hoping there may be some newcomers to boost the numbers this year which will make it more interesting for all concerned. Please come along and enjoy a sociable afternoon, there’s always a cuppa too.

On 17th October the talk will be about Cornerstone and on the 31st we have our first fundraiser when the Wighton Singers will entertain. Tickets will be available from Guild committee members. Our projects this session are CrossReach and the Sailors Mission. CrossReach are celebrating 50 years of work in Scotland and are on a fundraising drive and with this in mind our Guild will have a retiring collection at the Dedication Service on 3rd November which will go towards Guild and Project funds. Our Guild has decided to organise the Christmas Shoebox appeal this year and are looking for donations towards this. We will supply and pack the shoe boxes. Donations should be placed in the box provided in the church vestibule by 27th October or, if you so wish, you can fill a shoe box and place it in the box in the vestibule. Eileen Adamson, President
