THE PATRONS OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS PRESENT THE BREATH OF LIFE AWARD TO Karen Graybeal
benefitting The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 39th Annual Breath of Life Gala & Auction! Thank you for being part of this evening as we gather to celebrate the “star in everyone” Indeed, there is much to celebrate, and your presence encourages, strengthens, and inspires us all As we continue the quest to find a cure for cystic fibrosis, we are grateful for your generosity.

Honoree Karen Graybeal truly exemplifies that there is a “star in everyone.” With her long time support and dedication to the CF Guild she has continued to strive toward a cure for the disease that took the life of her precious daughter. She knows the day to day struggles families face as they battle through doctor appointments, medications, and hospitalizations Her generosity, empathy and drive have powered years of CF research, fundraising and patient care Karen stands alongside all our CF families with unwavering support and inspiring encouragement. What a privilege to honor her this year.
Much has changed for CF patients over the years as quality of life has improved and life expectancy has increased. Incredible research, new medications and improved treatment and care have made a dramatic difference for those living with cystic fibrosis However, there is still much to be accomplished
Tonight, we join our spirits with all those who have attended and supported this event both past and present and been part of the battle for CF to stand for “Cure Found”. With hopeful hearts, and on behalf of the families and friends touched by CF, we thank you for the difference you will make. In truth, we are all touched by CF as any life lost is a loss for us all. We continue our efforts alongside you all until it’s done

ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS
In people with cystic fibrosis, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to infections, extensive lung damage and respiratory failure. Many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies, either because their disease is too advanced or because their specific genetic mutations will not respond Those who can take current therapies continue to face challenging complications leading to hospitalizations, missed school and work, and significant interruptions in their daily routine. And, many children and adults with CF still face the sobering prospect of a shortened life span.
ABOUT THE CF FOUNDATION

We are driven by a dream that one day every person with cystic fibrosis will have the chance to live a long, healthy life Recognized globally, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has led the way in the fight against cystic fibrosis, fueling extraordinary medical and scientific progress. The life expectancy of someone born with CF has doubled in the last 30 years. Despite this progress, many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies. Our vision is a cure for every person with cystic fibrosis and a life free from the burden of this disease. We will not leave anyone behind. You are an important part of our progress Together, let’s make CF stand for Cure Found

ABOUT THE AWARD
The Breath of Life Award is presented annually to an organization or individual who has provided exceptional support in the fight against CF. It has become a tradition for the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis to present each Breath of Life Award recipient with a stunning hand blown glass vessel. For us, this vessel symbolizes the contrast between the breath that is used to blow a glasspiece and the lack of breath with which those stricken with CF must live each day.

I am very pleased to be honored at this year’s Annual Breath of Life Gala and Auction I am a founding member of the Cystic Fibrosis Guild and the mother of a child with cystic fibrosis. The guild was formed in memory of my daughter, Kristen Bigos, to raise awareness and funding for the scientific advances that have transformed CF lives.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) has been part of my life for 50 years My daughter was born in a time when Rich Mattingly, former Executive Vice President of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation aptly said “there was no science” Sadly, with no science there was no hope My daughter understood the landscape of CF at a young age and began to ask why more was not being done about CF and why “no one knows about CF” Kristen offered herself as a CF ambassador and began to tell her story publicly because she wanted others to understand CF and how it impacted lives and families Kristen knew that the pathway to better lives and better care rested with increased funding for research and treatments.

Kristen would be so proud of the groundbreaking work of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation I am honored to work with committed volunteers who have given selflessly of their time, money and devotion to change the course of CF Your commitment has been the light that shows the way to scientific advances for improved therapies, improved longevity and improved wellness
Thank you to all those who have given time, money and energy to this important cause We have come so far but cystic fibrosis still has no cure The Foundation remains committed to finding a cure and the time when CF will mean CURE FOUND.
Until it’s done….

The star was selected as a symbol by the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis based on a poignant passage from Alex, the Life of a Child by Frank Deford. The book was written in tribute to his daughter, and the following passage was about the night she died at the age of eight.

It was bitter cold and still, the way most winter’s nights with clear skies are, and now looking up one more time, I suddenly remembered one of my father’s favorite quotations, from Shakespeare. He had recited it to me when I was a boy. It was Juliet, talking of her love:
When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heav’n so fine That all the world will be in love with Night And pay no worship to the garish Sun
Much as I loved to hear my father say that, I could never really visualize the imagery until that night, when I could see Alex up there, cut out in all those stars.

7. Sixteen Bottle Quilceda Creek Vertical 2001 2016 Jim Frush

Quilceda Creek is dedicated exclusively to the production of world class Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon, which has led Robert Parker Jr. to name it Washington State’s premier Cabernet Sauvignon producer. Parker’s Wine Advocate compares the wines to “First Growth Bordeaux,” calling them a “tour de force,” and “utterly spellbinding.” Wine Spectator consistently names the wines as one of the Top Wines in the World. The accolades go on and on. Extremely difficult to find, and strictly allocated to a closed wine club and select outlets, these wines were purchased directly from the winery upon release and stored in perfect conditions Even the oldest will provide great drinking for years to come A vertical of these vintages, particularly of this length, is uncommon in the extreme and offers an unobtainable and rare opportunity to taste one of the top wines of the world over a generation of production.

Most importantly, this lot contains the 2002 to 2005 vintages, all scoring a perfect 100 points from Parker and considered to be the finest wines ever made by the winery, fashioned by its founder Alex Golitzin, now retired These levels of excellence and consistency are unmatched by any wine in the world

16. Twelve Bottle Vertical of Quilceda Creek CVR: Vintages 2008 Through 2019 Jim Frush

Quilceda Creek is considered by all to be Washington State’s premier producer of red wines Its CVR, or “C’est Vin Rouge,” or “it’s red wine,” is a blend, in the Bordeaux fashion, of numerous red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, sourced from all estate vineyard sites. While some connoisseurs consider it to be the winery’s “second wine” after the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, much again in the Bordeaux fashion, it’s more accurate to consider it to be a different wine, a blended wine, with its own nuances and delights. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate has referred to these CVR wines as “sensational,” “hedonistic,” and “opulent, sumptuous and downright sexy” It can be best enjoyed for 15 to 20 years from release The Advocate rates them all in the 90s, a consistent rating of “exceptional.” Difficult to find and allocated to a closed wine club and select outlets, these wines were purchased on release from the winery and cellared under perfect conditions. This vertical, of wines from 2008 through 2019, is a rarity and offers a priceless opportunity to taste these gems across a spectacular and unbroken series of years.
