To Our Dearest CF Community, Welcome to the 40th Annual Breath of Life Gala! We are so thankful that you have chosen to spend your evening here with us celebrating, while also supporting a cause near and dear to all our hearts.

We continue to be inspired by this incredible community- a group of people that have truly become family. We are forever grateful for your unwavering support and generosity.

May we take a moment to pause and recognize this year’s honorees- Drs. Pete Greenberg and Carrie Harwood. Both long time guild members, remarkable microbiologists, but most importantly parents of a daughter lost too soon. Barbara Greenberg had a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis, including receiving a double lung transplant in 2007. She passed away from CF complications in June of 2020 at the age of 35.

Let us hold Barbara and her family in our hearts tonight and promise to keep fighting so that stories like this are merely a thing of the past.

As you celebrate this evening, please remember that you are the reason. The reason advances have been and continue to be made.

The reason those living with CF, their family, and friends have hope.

The reason we are one step closer to finding a cure. Until it’s done and CF stands for “cure found”, we will carry on together.

ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects every organ in the body and makes breathing difficult. Some people with the disease say it’s like breathing through a narrow straw. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to lifethreatening lung infections. Sixty years ago, most children did not live long enough to attend elementary school, but thanks to Foundation-based research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is now into the 40’s. While people with CF are living longer than in the past, we still lose precious young lives every day.

ABOUT THE CF FOUNDATION Founded in 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation was started by parents desperate to save their children’s lives.

Their relentless and impassioned determination to prolong life has resulted in tremendous strides over the past 60 years in accelerating innovative research and drug development, as well as advancing care and advocacy. Virtually every approved cystic fibrosis drug therapy available now was made possible because of the Foundation and its supporters. Still, we believe no one should have to die at a young age. We will not rest until we have a cure for all people living with CF.

WHY SUPPORT THE CF FOUNDATION? Many people with CF are living long enough to realize their dreams of attending college, pursuing careers, getting married, and having children. This is due in large part to the work of the Foundation and the amazing CF community. We helped discover the gene that causes CF, created a state-of-the-art model for CF care, and have funded groundbreaking research. We are working every day to build on this incredible momentum, and we won’t stop until there is a cure for all people living with CF. Despite tremendous progress, we are not yet done. Our story will not be finished until we have achieved normal life spans and have a cure for 100 percent of people with CF.

ABOUT THE AWARD The Breath of Life Award is presented annually to an organization or individual who has provided exceptional support in the fight against CF. It has become a tradition for the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis to present each Breath of Life Award recipient with a stunning hand-blown glass vessel.

For us, this vessel symbolizes the contrast between the breath that is used to blow a glasspiece and the lack of breath with which those stricken with CF must live each day.

Every year, the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis present the Breath of Life Award to those in the community who show an extraordinary commitment to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.

This year we are pleased to honor:

It is a great privilege to be the honorees at the 40th Seattle Breath of Life Gala. Cystic Fibrosis, CF, is an awful disease. CF also stands for Caring Friends and for Cure Found, our aspiration.

We lost our daughter Barbara to cystic fibrosis three years ago at age 34.

As scientists involved in cystic fibrosis research and as parents, we have experienced this devastating disease from many points of view.

Through all our daughter’s ups and downs we were so grateful to have the caring community of the Cystic Fibrosis Guild by our side. The mutual support builds on itself and inspires everyone to strive for Cure Found.

Alex Deford, pictured with her father, Frank DeFord

The star was selected as a symbol by the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis based on a poignant passage from Alex, the Life of a Child by Frank Deford. The book was written in tribute to his daughter, and the following passage was about the night she died at the age of eight.

It was bitter cold and still, the way most winter’s nights with clear skies are, and now ... looking up one more time, I suddenly remembered one of my father’s favorite quotations, from Shakespeare. He had recited it to me when I was a boy. It was Juliet, talking of her love: When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heav’n so fine That all the world will be in love with Night And pay no worship to the garish Sun.

Much as I loved to hear my father say that, I could never really visualize the imagery until that night, when I could see Alex up there, cut out in all those stars.
