Dear Friends, We are honored that you joined us this evening to take the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) fight “to the stars and back” in support of the 36th Annual Breath of Life Gala & Auction. Your presence here tonight provides the strength and encouragement for those impacted by CF to continue the quest to find a cure and change CF to “cure found.”

This year’s honorees, Bill and Alicia Schmidt are not only long time CF supporters but also parents to a son with CF. It’s our privilege to recognize Bill and Alicia for their 32 years of dedication to the advancement of CF research, fundraising and patient care.

Bill and Alicia are inspired by the families and friends of those impacted by CF and the strength they display day in and day out. For as long as we have known Bill and Alicia, they have always taken the time to personally thank and acknowledge everyone involved for their support, be it families living with CF or volunteers and friends who have joined the journey.

The improved quality of life and increased life expectancy of many CF patients are directly related to the generosity of you and past attendees at this wonderful event.

Current advancements continue to make a dramatic difference in fighting this terrible disease as we take this journey together. With the funds raised tonight, so much more can and will be done to get to the next definition of CF – “cure found”.

The Faces Of Cystic Fibrosis We would like to introduce you to some of the faces of cystic fibrosis (CF). They all wear the same smile and in their eyes you see reflections of hope and optimism for the day when a cure for their disease is found. With your help—one day soon—we will find a cure and cystic fibrosis won’t have a face at all.

About Cystic Fibrosis Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects every organ in the body and makes breathing difficult. Some people with the disease say it’s like breathing through a narrow straw. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to life-threatening lung infections.

Sixty years ago, most children did not live long enough to attend elementary school, but thanks to Foundation-based research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is now into the 40’s. While people with CF are living longer than in the past, we still lose precious young lives every day.

Founded in 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world's leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation was started by parents desperate to save their children’s lives. Their relentless and impassioned determination to prolong life has resulted in tremendous strides over the past 60 years in accelerating innovative research and drug development, as well as advancing care and advocacy. Virtually every approved cystic fibrosis drug therapy available now was made possible because of the Foundation and its supporters. Still, we believe no one should have to die at a young age. We will not rest until we have a cure for all people living with CF.

Why Support The CF Foundation?

Many people with CF are living long enough to realize their dreams of attending college, pursuing careers, getting married, and having children. This is due in large part to the work of the Foundation and the amazing CF community. We helped discover the gene that causes CF, created a state-of-the-art model for CF care, and have funded groundbreaking research. We are working every day to build on this incredible momentum, and we won’t stop until there is a cure for all people living with CF. Despite tremendous progress, we are not yet done. Our story will not be finished until we have achieved normal life spans and have a cure for 100 percent of people with CF.

A B O U T T H E AWA R D

The Breath of Life Award is presented annually to an organization or individual who has provided exceptional support in the fight against CF. It has become a tradition for the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis to present each Breath of Life Award recipient with a stunning hand-blown glass vessel. For us, this vessel symbolizes the contrast between the breath that is used to blow a glass piece and the lack of breath with which those stricken with CF must live each day.

It is a privilege to be honored for this 36th Annual Breath of Life Gala and Auction. As parents of a child with cystic fibrosis, we have been members of this guild for thirtytwo years. We are grateful for this dedicated and energizing community that we share with you. Within this organization we have made some of our very best friends. We are inspired by all of you, the commitment of the volunteers and staff of the CF Guild that present this Gala, and of those who attend and support this cause that is so dear to our hearts. Your generosity is what funds the research which has increased the quality and longevity of the lives of those with CF. We have firsthand experience witnessing the positive results these therapies have made, which have been developed because of your contributions.

We feel so much gratitude to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for their groundbreaking guidance and work to efficiently and effectively convert these contributions into funding for researchers and physicians to create medicines, treatments, devices and protocols that have made these impressive advancements possible.

As far as we have come, we are not done yet. There is more to be accomplished as we continue on this path to ultimately find a cure. Speaking for parents of children with CF, we want you to know there is no greater gift to us than by being surrounded by you who give time, energy, and money to help loved ones live longer, healthier, and fulfilling lives.

The star was selected as a symbol by the Patrons of Cystic Fibrosis based on a poignant passage from Alex, the Life of a Child by Frank Deford. The book was written in tribute to his daughter, and the following passage was about the night she died at the age of eight.

It was bitter cold and still, the way most winter’s nights with clear skies are, and now ... looking up one more time, I suddenly remembered one of my father’s favorite quotations, from Shakespeare. He had recited it to me when I was a boy. It was Juliet, talking of her love: When he shall die, Take him and cut him out in little stars, And he will make the face of heav’n so fine That all the world will be in love with Night And pay no worship to the garish Sun. Much as I loved to hear my father say that, I could never really visualize the imagery until that night, when I could see Alex up there, cut out in all those stars.

1. All sales are final, and there will be no exchanges, refunds or extensions on items except where specified. Please respect all the restrictions set out by the item donors and read all certificates, vouchers and corresponding materials carefully.

2. A “Guaranteed Bid” placed before the Auction closing time will end all bidding and guarantee the sale of that item to the premium bidder. A “Guaranteed Bid” must be made before the closing of the respective auction.

3. Winning bidders may pay for items at the CASHIER’S DESK (to open at 10:00 p.m.) in Grand Ballroom D on the second floor. Payment in full the evening of the Auction is mandatory. Check, MasterCard, VISA, and American Express will be accepted. All bids are in U.S. dollars.

4. No items will be released from ITEM PICK-UP without a confirmed payment made via MOBILE PHONE or at a CASHIER’S DESK. 5. Deliveries can be arranged on selected oversize items in the Seattle Area Only by appointment. Exact time of delivery cannot be promised. To arrange for delivery of these selected items, present your “paid” receipt at ITEM PICK-UP, and a volunteer will record your address and telephone number.

6. The Patrons of CF has endeavored to catalog and describe the property correctly, but all property is sold “as is,” and the Patrons of CF neither warrants nor represents and in no way shall be responsible for the correctness of description, authenticity, authorship, provenance or condition of the property. No statements contained in the catalog or made orally at the sale or elsewhere shall be deemed to be such a warranty, representation or assumption of liability.

7. The Patrons of CF reserves the right to withdraw any item prior to the start of bidding for such item.

8. Items depicted in the video presentation are for illustrative purposes only and may not be actual auction items.

9. Items may not be re-sold at public sales and are non-transferable.

10. Unless otherwise specified, all items and services must be used by November 9, 2020.

Future donations depend upon strict observance of these restrictions.

NOTE: For tax purposes, the value of a Breath of Life Gala ticket is estimated to be $200 per person.

11. RESERVATIONS FOR ALL TRIPS, HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS, PARTIES AND SIMILAR EVENTS MUST BE MUTUALLY ARRANGED WITH THE DONOR UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED. All arrangements for trips, parties and similar events must be made at least 90 days in advance unless otherwise specified. NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES WILL BE ALLOWED. 12. Air travel tickets or certificates are subject to the following restrictions: Alaska Airlines • Travel authorization forms are valid until November 9, 2020.

• Please make reservations at least 120 days in advance. Reservations are subject to availability. Please note that international travel and travel during peak periods often book upwards of six months in advance.

• Vouchers are valid for flights served by Alaska Airlines flights numbered 1-999, 2000-2999, Virgin America flights numbered 1000-1999, SkyWest Airlines Flights 3450-3499, and PenAir flights 3275-3299. Not valid for flights to Cuba or on codeshare partners.

• Please note that if lost the Alaska Airlines vouchers cannot be replaced. They should be treated as cash.

13 MIXED HALF CASE OF RARE 1989 BORDEAUX WINE Jim Frush The 1989 vintage in Bordeaux is considered unique and one of the best of the last half of the 20th Century, rivaling the 1982 and the 1990. After a mild winter, a wet spring and hot, sunny, dry summer produced a record harvest, one of the earliest in history. While the picking began early, the great weather allowed some to wait until mid-October to finish. 1989 Bordeaux wine produced numerous examples of stellar Bordeaux, but interestingly, the best 1989 wines were not made by the first growths. Wine spectator declared in 1999 that it considered 1989 a superior vintage to 1982. Decanter Magazine considers the 1989s to have a textual density and saturation of flavor superior to the 1982s. Over 200 hours of care were put into creating this quilt. It is machine pieced and quilted, queen-bed sized measuring 97” X 97”. It features fabrics from the 100% cotton, Moda Grunge Collection with shades in blue green, cream, and dark brown accents.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has unrestricted financial reserves of about 10 times its 2019 budgeted expenses, following a one-time royalty sale in 2014. The sale was made possible by the Foundation’s successful venture philanthropy model, through which we have raised and invested hundreds of millions of dollars to help discover and develop breakthrough CF therapies. We have placed this revenue into an Opportunity Fund to accelerate support for innovative medical research and important scientific advancements to one day find a lifelong cure.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is working to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to highquality, specialized care. FREMONT TROLL STROLL April 25, 2020 • Join us for a fun afternoon in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle for the 18th Annual Fremont Troll Stroll. Participants tour up to twelve local establishments sampling a variety of ales along the way.

GREAT STRIDES: LACE UP. WALK. CURE CYSTIC FIBROSIS May, June & July 2020 • Great Strides is the CF Foundation’s largest fundraising event and there will be 10 walks in Washington & Alaska in 2019. Great Strides provides opportunities for all people within a local community to get involved forming teams with friends, family and colleagues. Walk day is a fun celebration that includes a healthy walk and festivities that participants look forward to year after year.

TACOMA TENNIS AUCTION BALL May 8 & 9 2020 • This event pairs Tacoma’s best tennis pros with sponsored amateur players. The teams are auctioned off to the highest bidders who then become the team “owners.” Owners receive prize packages based on their teams’ performances in the Pro/Am Tournament held the next day.

Past prize packages have included fabulous trips, parties and more.

CF CYCLE FOR LIFE July 18, 2020 • Take your choice of a 15, 25, or 65-mile route in Woodinville and cycle at your own pace. Afterwards enjoy our Post Pedal Party with craft beer, gourmet food, live music and more.

Important Note on Attendance at Foundation Events: To reduce the risk of getting and spreading germs at CF Foundation-sponsored events, we ask that everyone follow basic best practices by regularly cleaning your hands with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand gel, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow and maintaining a safe 6-foot distance from anyone with a cold or infection.

Medical evidence shows that germs may spread among people with CF through direct and indirect contact, as well as through droplets that travel short distances when a person coughs or sneezes. These germs can lead to worsening symptoms and speed decline in lung function. To further help reduce the risk of crossinfection, the Foundation’s attendance policy recommends inviting only one person with CF to an indoor Foundation-sponsored event at a specific time.
