2023 Annual Report A message from our leadership At CFAAR, we are dedicated to creating an interdisciplinary and collaborative research core to make meaningful improvements in the health of children, adults, and families living with allergic disease.

To our CFAAR supporters, As we reflect on the past year, it is with great pleasure that I warmly welcome you all to our Annual Report for 2023. Amid challenges and triumphs, CFAAR has continued to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of food allergy and asthma research with resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment.

This year's report is not just a compilation of performance metrics; it is a testament to our exceptional team's collective dedication and hard work, the trust and support of our donors, and the enduring partnerships we have forged. In the following pages, you will find a comprehensive overview of our achievements, publications, and the strategic initiatives that have shaped our community impact.

We are excited about the opportunities that lie before us as we look ahead—the foundation we have laid in 2023 positions us for continued growth, innovation, and success. A Year of Growth Thanks to our generous donors and grant awards, CFAAR made significant strides in 2023 in all three of our core focus areas.

Public Health Core

$9 Million awarded in grant and gift funding

In 2023 CFAAR applied for 5 major NIH grants aiming to advance public health understanding of the distribution and determinants of food allergy--including a well-scored proposal to join the prestigious NIAID-sponsored national Consortium for Food Allergy Research. Throughout the year our team published over a dozen peer-reviewed manuscripts on the topic.

This year, CFAAR also kicked off a NIAID R01-supported randomized controlled trial of the Food Allergy Mastery program, a psychosocial and behavioral intervention that aims to improve food allergy management among a large, diverse sample of adolescents in collaboration with colleagues at Children's National Hospital.

Clinical Core IREACH U01 clinical study aimed to improve pediatric adherence to the guidelines surrounding early peanut introduction and to decrease the incidence of peanut allergy in infants. iReach (NIH U01): Over 18k participants enrolled, received funding for the validation of two key study measures and an interim analysis of peanut allergy incidence.

CFAAR is hard at work on the FORWARD R01 study to understand the differences in food allergy among white, Black, and Latinx families.

Community Core CFAAR helped to create an undergraduate-led club on Northwestern’s campus called College Food Allergy Advocates for Awareness and Education (CAFAE). CAFAE helps students with and without food allergy and related conditions feel supported and empowered to manage their conditions on campus. CFAAR was approached by the New York Times and the Washington Post to share updates about this work.

This year, CFAAR began hosting Quarterly Treatment Panels, during which they invite a panel of experts from the allergy and immunology field to discuss treatment options and answer the public’s questions. The event series is hosted in a hybrid format, allowing local community members to attend and connect in-person with experts, and still provide access to patients across the country via Zoom.

This past summer, CFAAR hosted two summer internship programs, and brought on over 70 students to the Northwestern campus to involve them in the center’s ongoing projects. The team welcomed an undergraduate and graduate cohort of 22 students for the six-week CFAAR Scholars Program, and a high school cohort of 49 students in the week-long intensive Ambassadors program . The students left this year with experience in research recruitment, scientific manuscript writing, presenting, and professional and social skills.

Research Publications CFAAR's work spans across early prevention, epidemiological interventions, and community and school outreach.

Inaugural Global Food Allergy Preve July 6-9, 2023

Our team welcomed over 30 speakers, including international speakers, 200+ attendees, and 21 sponsors. The summit focused on 6 core prevention topic areas, all cores met to develop a consensus paper and make prevention and equity a reality.

GFAPS Sessions CFAAR invited clinicians, researchers, scientists, key thought leaders, and industry partners to join our 2day summit for a collaborative opportunity focusing on food allergy and related atopic disease prevention.

Working Groups The summit working groups focused on 6 core prevention topic areas including: Molecular Mechanisms of Food Allergy Prevention, Microbiome, Skin: Barrier of Pathway to Food Allergy, Early Dietary Influences on Food Allergy Development, Environmental Factors, Early Treatment and Secondary Prevention.

ntion Summit (GFAPS) Poster Presentations Our Poster Session provided a forum for researchers to present and discuss their recent work, network and connect with industry sponsors. The submissions were open to undergraduate students, graduate students, doctoral students, residents, junior faculty, and research staff.

Exhibitor Booths We had a total of 21 sponsors at GFAPS. Our summit attendees had the opportunity to network and visit the exhibitor booths to ask questions and connect.

Research Highlights CFAAR's research body received global recognition from outlets' growing coverage and interest in food allergy prevalence, diagnosis, prevention, disparities, and impact on daily life.

The real reason food allergies are on the rise “On the hunt for deeper data, we found a series of analyses published by Northwestern University’s Center for Food Allergy and Asthma Research.Based on a survey of almost 80,000 people in more than 50,000 U.S. households in 2015 and 2016, this data goes into far more detail than the feds could — and raises even more questions about the weird world of food allergies.”

Parents can reduce a child's peanut allergy risk with these steps.

“Only 13% of parents and caregivers reported being aware of those guidelines, according to the new survey from [CFAAR]. The report, published in July in the peer-reviewed journal Pediatrics, also found the parents who said they were aware of the guidelines were more likely to be white, between the ages of 30 and 44, educated and wealthy.

Food allergy rate is highest among Hispanic, Black and Asian individuals “Food allergies are not frequently talked about impacting racial and ethnic communities,” said study corresponding author Dr. Ruchi Gupta. “It’s not on the radar. But we now know it does impact them more, and it’s important to improve awareness.”

SCHOLARS & AMBASSADORS

Ambassadors Program The Ambassadors Program was a week-long experience that provided high school and undergraduate students with an in-depth introduction to public health research, medical interventions, advocacy, policy, and health careers. CFAAR Ambassadors worked directly with CFAAR faculty and research staff.

They learned skills to challenge them to critically evaluate scientific manuscripts, interpret outcomes and data, and develop critical thinking skills. On the last day of the program the ambassadors presented their final research presentation.

Scholars Program For 6 weeks, CFAAR was joined by 30 interns.

This summer, the interns have had the opportunity to strengthen their skills in epidemiological, clinical, and community-based research topics. The students have attended weekly didactic sessions and journal clubs to learn from CFAAR faculty, staff, and research collaborators. This week the interns present their final research presentations! Thank you again to CFAAR's Education & Programming Team for putting together such an incredible program!

STUDENT HEALTH LEADERS

This past winter, CFAAR welcomed close to 100 Chicago Public High School students to the Student Health Leaders program. The program consisted of four weekend workshops that aimed to help students become empowered health advocates who educate their peers on issues seen in their school and greater neighborhood communities. Throughout the program, students met and worked with peers from across the city, created innovative solutions on topics they believe are the most relevant to high school students, practiced personal goal setting, and gained exposure to different careers within public health and medicine.

Dr. Bilaver was awarded a NUCATS Translational Science Pilot Grant to study implementation strategies needed to support adherence to clinical guidelines for the prevention of peanut allergy across the country.

Kristin Kan, MD, MPH, MSc Faculty Researcher, CFAAR Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Dr. Kan was awarded the Home Health Environment Springboard Award. The findings will support an NIH R-series proposal with a larger clinical population. The ultimate goal of the work is to improve the asthma outcomes of children by extending the reach of healthcare technologies into the home to understand the daily experiences and exposures of patients.

Dr. Samady published Early Peanut Introduction Awareness, Beliefs, and Practices Among Parents and Caregivers, finding that early peanut feeding practices are gaining traction in this population, but less than 50% are introducing before 1 year of age. Disparities still exist by race/ethnicity, education, and income. Learn more here.

Our team is internationally recognized for our public health research into the prevalence of food allergy in the United States and its economic impact. A core mission of CFAAR is to reduce the burden of disease and improve health equity by developing, evaluating and disseminating asthma and allergy interventions, as well as by conducting work to inform local, state, national and international health policy.
